The ratings are out for the week of May 23 through the 27th, and hardest hit was NBC’s Days of our Lives.  Unfortunately, the series hit multiple all-time lows, according to the latest Nielsen data.  In total viewers, DAYS tallied an average of 2,081,000.  Their previous series low was 2,154,000 back for the week of April 13-17 of 2015.  In addition, the long-running series also hit all-time lows in womens demo 18-34 and 18-49, in terms of total viewers and ratings share.

Over at General Hospital, it looks like the GH Nurses’ Ball and adjacent storylines helped the ABC daytime drama series perk up.  GH was the only one of the four network daytime soaps to increase viewership with a solid +122,000 bringing its weekly average to 2,886,000.  In addition, GH was the only soap to add viewers in the womens 18-34, 18-49, and 25-54 categories.

Meanwhile over at CBS Daytime, The Young and the Restless also took a hit down -122, 000 from its previous week and losing viewers in all key demos.  Its sister soap, The Bold and the Beautiful was less hit losing -77,000 for the week.

While the last week of May was not its best, CBS heralded in a press release that for the entire May Sweeps period it was the highest sweeps ratings for The Bold and the Beautiful since 2008, and the most-watched season of The Young and the Restless since 2009.  They went on to say that The Young and the Restless (4.80m, up +2%) had its most-watched May since 2010, and The Bold and the Beautiful (3.77m) was up +2% in viewers from a year ago and most-watched May since 2008.

It might help Days if it wasn’t filmed in near total darkness. Turn on a couple of lights for God’s sake! The writing is generally quite good, especially some of the humorous dialogue. The acting is generally excellent with a few notable exceptions. However the show lacks energy overall. Between the pacing and the darkness it can tend to be less than compelling.

I’m with you on the darkness factor, Mr M. It especially doesn’t make sense when they have one of the best looking casts on soaps, particularly the men. Why not let them shine? And, unlike GH, they don’t seem to require men with great hair to keep getting buzz cuts!

Agreed. The lighting bothers me almost every episode.

Thank you Mister Media. I was afraid my vision was failing. Between the poor lighting and the ultra dark sets you can hardly see a thing over there.

I totally agree, the lighting is horrendous.

I also wonder if they are filming in high definition? They are they only soap that seems to be filmed through yellow cheesecloth.

They need to lighten up in other ways, too. It’s so depressing.

I’m watching today’s show right now and having to endure a screaming infant and a barely visible Kate hiding in the bushes like Arte Johnson on Laugh-In. Verrrry interesting….

Other soaps will keep the crying babies to a minimum. Days will let the screaming take over the dialogue and drown it out, as does the “background” music which makes it impossible to hear the actors.
Kate was so obvious and visible. It was laughable.

General Hospital is my soap. It has hands-down the best cast in daytime. However the writing has rarely been worse than it is right now. I’m talking about the stories they are choosing to tell and the way they are telling them. A lot of the material is actually an insult to the viewer’s intelligence. It’s almost as if they go to air with stories before all the plot points or even the resolutions have been worked out in advance. Interest cannot be sustained when plot lines meander and characters vanish for long periods of time. More and more characters are constantly added to an already overcrowded canvas. The Jason story of the last two years has been an EPIC FAIL, delivering the character essentially from point A to point A. I don’t mind the mob related stories when they are written well and something is actually at stake. However, just having an abundance of characters involved in or related to the mob while the viewers have to wallow with them in their existential angst is exhausting. In closing, someone need to oversee this mess and look at the big picture. Each day’s episode is generally enjoyable but overall the show is frustrating, especially for longtime loyal viewers who root for the its survival. Long live GH!

Well said! Stories last too long or are cut off at the knees (Kristina?) hard to invest in the half-assed storytelling unless you are a main character.

GH took the easy way out when it came to Jason .. just make him Jason Morgan again, don’t give him any layers or nuance, play to the simplistic formula many of the fans want .. Jason the enforcer, Sonny the godfather, Sam the mob moll. It’s just not interesting to those of us who’d like to see some character development, a new side to Jason coming out, perhaps develop his Quartermaine side .. nope, that doesn’t play well to fans of the mob. Those are the fans GH caters to now. That’s why I’m out.

You hit on some major problems, Mr M. I also enjoy the show daily for the wonderful actors and overall excellence. But WHY are there so many accessory characters? We all know sometimes they’re needed to advance particular stories. But why do we have to keep them when they’re just not clicking? And when they DO show long term potential, like Rosalie, they abandon them AND the stories they rode in on. Regarding the Jason story, I adore Billy Miller and refuse to place any blame on him. To be honest, both he and Kelly Monaco look like they’re fighting boredom furiously. The reveal, and where to go now, is just dragging on too long for the eventual payoffs (Jason falsely arrested again? PLEEEEEASE!) . This is also happening on Y&R right now with Sharon’s baby. I’m all for suspense building but it’s getting ridiculous.

Bingo! I said before, those who bitched about the fluke story, Jason’s story is 10 times worse!

I agree, Timmmy. Fluke creeped me out, I must admit. And I expressed my dislike in more than a mouthful.
Nonetheless, I also praised the acting. Anthony was volcanic, for lack of a more suitable word. He definitely deserved the Emmy for that creation.
Jason? You bet, Timmmy. I cannot follow that cadaverous character. It seems that Billy Miller’s ( my hero) input is dead. Breathe some life and dimension into the character….is he told to act without spirit? He simply demoralizes me. And, so does Sam….too serious and morose. What a couple!! For that, I concur with Soaphound.
I also agree with maddiehayes. Put Jason’s feet on the ground and make him one person. How long until he decides what and who he is?????

Thank you for your comments. Really appreciate them.

Spot on! Shelley Altman and Jean Passanate are the worst head writing team the show has ever had.

DAYS is the only soap I know that will tell a story that NO ONE cares about forever. All these new characters thrown in that few people care about. The writing sucks. The cast is asleep through most of it. What used to be quick paced and lively has turned into a snoozefest. I watch DAYS once a week and see I am missing nothing. The stories are boring with no points or well thought out plots. The villains are far to campy. And most of the time they just tell old stories with new actors. The Joey story with him at some 60’s style Manson commune is so ridiculous it sounds like a comedy. Andre and character presentation reminds me of the man with the twisty mustache at the railroad tracks tying the girl down and laughing. Those plot devices were fine in 1875 theater presentations but not on daytime TV. Nicole being a hooch again with the dumbest invention of a character named Deimos. SMH!!!! Hope is getting tired as a weary detective who can’t make up her mind. Have her stick to one story and one decision and move with it. They make her look like a complete buffoon all the time. The teens stories are bad because the actors portraying them are horrid. If I wanted to watch high school drama practice I would scout the local high schools in my neighborhood and watch them perform “Rent” for the moms and dads. The few quality actors they have left just are lost. I think NBC is regretting giving DAYS the green light for renewal. It won’t surprise me if they change their minds unless something drastic is done.

The current regime has decimated YnR. I pray for a new crew to come in & remaster it.

Last Friday’s Y&R was so damn boring. The whole entire episode was about Adam being framed by Victor. Not one other story ran concurrent with this one.

HARRY, I’m having the same problem lately with Y&R, entire days of boredom are constantly making me doze off. This NEVER used to happen during my soaps. It’s very disconcerting, and I don’t think it’s my age creeping up on me.

Y&R is so boring. not surprised they lost all those viewers. they could lose more next week. this show is in terrible shape.

Yes, and it’s fine if one story is boring because you can fast forward through it until you get to the stories which do interest you. But when one boring story dominates the whole show, one invariably turns it off. That’s why the ratings for Y&R are down. The whole Victor tormenting Adam and Chelsey from prison is just redundantly dull.

I started watching DAYS in 1995, so it’s my baby and I grew up with it. However, my viewing has become sporadic since February, and with a sad soap heart, I took it off my DVR this week.

The stories are going nowhere. Victor and Maggie are a half-step away from a nursing home, and do nothing except sit in their robes and let Summer swindle them. They aren’t writing anything for John and Marlena. Steve and Kayla go round and round. I enjoy Shawn and Belle, but there’s no point getting too invested in them at this point.

There are very few rootable characters. I like Vincent Irizarry, but Deimos is too evil. I’ve seen no redeeming qualities in him. Kate has been completely trashed — she was NEVER this heartless. I don’t feel any empathy toward Hope or Jennifer. Don’t get me started on the teens. I love Theo, and Claire is tolerable in small doses. Chase is gross and needs to go ASAP. Joey is OK, but making him a murderer was a mistake. Let’s not talk about Ciara.

I think they’ve also made awful casting decisions. Who decided it was OK to let Greg Vaughan, Martha Madison, Brandon Beemer and Jen Lilley go? Not only are these core characters tied to major families, they fill the 20s-30s age group. Instead we have to watch Summer, the ever-expanding Hernandi and a needless reincarnation of Aiden? No thank you. (I’m fine with adding more of Rafe and Gabi’s family, but it’s too much all at once, and at the expense of major core families.)

Lastly, I could not take watching any more episodes filmed in total darkness. It was literally too difficult to watch, because I can’t tell what is going on! Seriously, DAYS, pay the damn electric bill. Even if its a nighttime scene, people still have lamps and overhead lights on inside! It was especially jarring because I usually watch at least one other soap each day, and they USE THE LIGHTING EQUIPMENT.

At this point, Vincent Irizarry is my only reason for sticking with Days. He was outstanding on All My Children. So, I know he can deliver great work when given quality material. I keep waiting. Unfortunately, like with Melissa Archer, TPTB at Days don’t appear to know what to do with him.

And I so agree with you Mandy. Please Days producers turn on some lights.

Days best episode was on Wednesday when Peter Reckell was on screen with Kristian Alfonso. The problem with Days right now is so many actors are leaving there is no one to root for as a couple either. The storylines move too slow and they are wasting Vincent Irizarry’s talent should have tested him with Judi Evans and played on their chemistry. Storylines are boring I switched to General Hospital more exciting right now……and I have been watching Days for over 25 years:(

Days needs some happy moments and some romance…everybody looks miserable…Deimos, Philip and Summer characters arent really working for me…Shaun and Belle should stay…i liked Jens story but they should had kept Eric-Jack should be back as a regular…none of the teens show promise of carrying the show into the future-i still wish the show well and hope they find new writers……..GH has somewhat improved…do not like them still trashing AJs character…wish they found a way to keep SK as AJ…also Ava should not have been made a killer who is free to walk the street…instead she should have been a social climber who marries AJ…would have loved it had AJ and Ava as a couple who win sole custody of Avery-having AJ raise Avery with Ava would had been his best revenge against Sonny,,,jmho!!!

Jim, I would cast Sean as Valentin Cassadine. Grow a beard and freak Sonny the hell out!

That could work or as another Jerome!!!

i think Freddy Smith returning to Days will be a big plus !

It sure can’t hurt –

Especially if he is accompanied by Chandler Massey!!

General hospital is the best soap opera!! I DVR it and watch it in the evening. i used to watch Days of our lives and DvR it BUT days of our lives have become boring and i ended up fast forwarding and realize that and quit watching. now there’s word that Stefano is coming back. People who did on a soap. yours bring back also Bo Brady. well i quit watching Days of our lives and watch the best soap general hospital.

My household watches Y&R, Days and GH faithfully. Not always crazy about storylines but stick around long enough and they’ll get better. All soaps go through their highs and lows. They also have great characters and some you’d be happy to see leave. Just grateful soaps are still on. May they grow again as they did in the 80s.

AGREED Melanie. .grump and gripe. .we at least have these for now. .

And I can grump and take issue right along with the best of posters on the state of daytime lol

At Y&R, it is time to cut quite a few of stories that are not working: Billy & Phyllis, the possible pairing of Jack and Hillary, Hillary blackmailing everyone, Victor and Meredith (UGH – but love the actress!). I have followed her from Another World and primetime, and she deserves a better storyline than this! There’s a rumor that a behind the scenes shake-up is coming and I hope it is true!

I luvs luvs luvs Billy & Phyllis !!

I hate the idea of Hillary and Jack—she is not only young enough to be his daughter, she is young enough to be his granddaughter
The actress who plays Hillary is quite good but the character she plays is so deplorable and making so many enemies that I am being led to believe she will be murdered leading to a who-dunnit storyline.

I say they bring Jill back on a more permanent basis. I can almost guarantee the ratings went up in May to the wonderful, but ufortunate way to short appearance of Jess Walton. As a fan of the show since the mid eighties, I say bringing Jill back with hubby in tow would give the show a must needed boost. Jill’s catfight scenes with Hillary were some of the best in a long while. Jill could easily be part of t th e foundation. She was always worried about Devon and Katherine’s money, not to mention a bit jealous. She could live in the house with Billy, bring back Esther, and long time viewers can get a treat and have Jill and Esther snipe at each other once in a while. I wlso agree that pairing Jack with Hilary would be right up there with the Sharon and Victor situation. GROSS

i hope the rumors true about a behind the scenes change coming to Y&R. the show is a disaster

Days destroyed itself by going dark & hateful and cruel for their celebration. The systematic destruction of the Bradys & the Hortons in favor of the Hernandez family represents total destruction. Add to that amoral writing, petty favoritism and zero respect for the show’s legacy or fans, and the ratings make perfect sense. No joy. No romance. No hope. Why would anyone watch? At this point, they could bring back Will, Eric and the reanimated corpses of Tom and Alice Horton, and most viewers would still never trust the show again. There’s nothing to invest in.

“the reanimated corpses of Tom and Alice” – that’s funny stuff!

I disagree w others who say that GH has 2 big a cast. In my opinion it keeps the show vibrant & it never feels that the vets r being left out. Spotty writing or not the show is constantly fast paced & entertaining. The balance between drama and humor is perfection. I would love to support other soaps but unfortunately GH has spoiled me…..

Yes, Kaylie15. Days is all about doom, gloom and the dark side. What makes the ambiance worse is the younger gang….wow…what a travesty!!

They made Chase a rapist and Joey a murderer. I know people don’t like the recast of Ciara, but they really should have not thrown any of the new teens into the deep end of the pool and given them grotesque, amoral stories that a seasoned actor would have trouble selling. Making Chase a rapist just seemed spiteful and another way Higley was getting revenge not he previous regime. The Chase and Ciara friendship was popular with fans. Why pour acid on it? Oh yeah, they were about destructiveness. And Will. He drove the action in the Pillson triangle, made things happen. People were frustrated with him – and a crew of insane, hateful bullies trashed Guy Wilson mercilessly – when in fact he did as asked and made Will a polarizing character that engaged viewers. Paul and Henry are blank tokens trotted out to defend the show against the homophobic pander that was Will’s death. Well, to all the tolls who celebrated Will’s death and are currently celebrating Theresa’s impeding demise, you do not represent the majority and when the show decided the bullies on the internet were the majority, they destroyed themselves. Hate won the day with the reboot, but in the long run, it destroyed the show.

@Kaylie15.
Such a passionate post, Kaylie…applause, applause.
Will’s death was definitely a bad move. I had heard rumblings of him coming back?
Theresa is one of my favorite actresses ever. Perhaps it’s because I love Jen Lilley.
However, I can’t speculate if she is, indeed’, leaving of her own volition.
I have been watching Days with my Gran since I was a kindergartener. I am not saying I conceptualized everything, but I followed well enough with my little girl brain. After twenty-five years, I find this soap unrecognizable.
I still don’t understand why Will was killed off. He could have joined Sonny wherever he is.
I would rather have a gay love story than these obscene goings-on among the teens.
You are so right……regardless of the fact that I do not like an older Chase; what a way to choke the life out of a character. Makes no sense to me. To what end?
The only character with a sense of himself and a head on his shoulders is Theo……love him.
Now, it seems that TPTB are steering Ciara towards another calamitous situation. She has the hots for Chad; really? If this is developing into another brainless storyline, I hope the writers think hard about this and gather their facts from real-life situations, without distorting any truths.
Rape is a very sensitive, horrific crime of power. So, all their t’s better be crossed.
I would think it to be very unrealistic and offensive, to most rape victims, if Ciara were to jump into a sexual relationship with a much older man.
Also, I find the idea that Ciara would be open to that type of closeness disturbing. I thought rape victims abhor and recoil from ‘close encounters’ so soon after the violation of their body.
You are right; the show is destroyed. How to come back from that? The days where I awaited for 1 o’clock with anticipation are over. I do not even dvr anymore. If I miss an episode; oh, well….I miss an episode.

Days and GH are still worthwhile I don’t care what anyone says!

The GH Nurses’ Ball was the reason for the jump.
Weekly ratings mean nothing.
Weekly ratings are used as a game for the to bitch whine and moan…..LOL

As seen, the Y&R ratings went down for the week but was the highest of the month.
The Y&R month May was highest since 2009..

As far as the ratings actually having great meaning are the Sept to Sept ratings.
Weekly ratings are the bitch whine and moan game .. ahaaaa!

(( congrats GH for a good week ! )) the nurses ball is a winner ..

Gh has a ton of talent. They need to pick four main stories and tell them for god sakes!

Y&R, it keeps sinking and no ones to blame but Charlie Pratt . I stood And waited, it’s over! Too many amateur actors and no juicy stories! Sorry but Jason and Gina are a bust! Refocus on the history of the show and give Jack some freakin balls!

Timm, I totally agree!!

theirs no depth in any of the stories. baby switches, brain tumors and automobile accidents are lazy. characters have been changed for plot. and the biggest disaster is the decimating of the Chancellor mansion. characters being written as stupid

Billy sucks [Sorry Jason!] and that mansion looks like a whore house!

HaHa, my Timmmy…..it’s too late for Jack to recapture those…..Am I forgiven?
Jack is at the crepuscule of his life. This Phyllis is in her prime. Forty is supposed to be the IT age for a woman. Can’t wait!!! LOL. Ciao.

C, what P’s me off is Victor is in prison, Jack can strike, but NO, he sits back like Howdy Doody! [[Google it!] I know they are writing Jack to sit as the family Patriarch BUT have some pride Jacky! Your wife is screwing your brother! [Ewww!] Bye C!

@Timmm.
Oh, I know , Timmmy. But, I am sure Jack will come around. TPTB are trying to make Jack emulate his father….walk in his shoes down the right and narrow road. But, this is not the promiscuous Jack of old….Yes, he has changed as he aged; not this drastically, though!! He just is not aware of his immediate surroundings: his wife and brother and the mascarade.
No one could put anything past the Jack I know. What’s up, Jack?
As yourself, it just ‘ain’t’ working for me thus far.
He cannot put one foot in front of the other, somnambulantly, through this situation. Jack will snap out of it…..he has been cuckolded by an ex, doing his brother, before. No other man, especially his brother, in his right mind, would have forgiven Billy.
I am with you, my love…EWWWWW is right!!

Terrible numbers for DAYS! You know what they say…”Give them enough Rope and they’ll hang themselves!”

Days went right back to where they were last year, horrible ratings especially when compared to 3rd place GH. I don’t think there is a way to turn it around this time. Ken Corday wanted Dena Higley back and her horrible stories are a cancer on the show.

They are LOWER than last year! And these are all-time historic lows. 11% down in total viewers since this time last year, 47% down in the young women’s demographic, and down in all the female demos. And for the last fifteen weeks in a row the young women’s rating has been at an all-time low. It should also be remembered that Tomsell’s ratings were on the road to recovery, before Griffley took over – and Griffley didn’t get a rise until they had high-profile returns and the huge publicity of the 50th – which they clearly have squandered.

w/c Feb 15 – viewers down from last year
w/c Feb 22 – viewers down from last year
w/c Feb 29 – viewers down from last year
w/c Mar 14 – viewers down from last year
w/c Mar 21 – viewers down from last year
w/c Apr 4 – viewers down from last year
w/c Apr 18 – viewers down from last year
w/c Apr 25 – viewers down from last year
w/c May 2 – viewers down from last year
w/c May 9 – viewers down from last year
w/c May 16 – viewers down from last year (and All-Time Low)

correction :
May 16 down from last year
May 25 down from last year (and All-Time Low)

Thanks for breaking that down Stephen. All time low, wow. I thought those total viewers numbers were super low but had no idea they were all time low.

These horrible ratings for Days are well deserved. The stories are horrific, they brought back Dena Higley for God’s sake. It’s like they wanted the show to die off. No wonder the younger actors are jumping ship for greener pastures.

these are cancellation numbers

What is funny is last time days was number 3 and 2 in ratings was when Dena was the head writer back in 2009. Guess what folks Dena has not written on the show since Feb. 2016 and want return to head writing until after the Olympics. Its has been Josh and Beth Milstein.

Isn’t Higley’s name still on the credits? I imagine Higley and Griffith co-wrote the bible for their intended co-writership, and Griffith and Milstein worked to that – hence Higley’s name on the credits.

Dena Higley did a lot of damage to the show whilst working with Griffith, and the show is feelling that damage now.

Talking of Josh Griffith, Ken Corday said this of him on his departure:

“I wrote him a two-page letter just thanking him for basically pulling us out of the bubbling pot. The show was about to go over the edge, into the abyss, and he and Dena together pulled us out …. They turned the show around. The audience for the show grew 50 percent in the demographic and that is huge.”

And now we know, now that more of Josh Griffith’s stuff has aired, that Josh “soras-for-rape-and-murder” Griffith and Dena “Kill Will” Higley have in reality thrown a successful show INTO the bubbling pot, and brought it TEETERING over the edge, and STARING into the ABYSS. They turned the show around alright – they took a successful show and WRECKED IT:

All time low total viewers
All time low households and share
All time low in women 18-34 viewers and rating
All time low in women 18-49 rating
All statistics slashed from this time last year,
with the young womens numbers slashed by all but 50% – and that is HUGE!

All time low in women 18-49 viewers AND rating.

You’re welcome blake. Thanks for thanking me! 🙂

It is also noteworthy that Tomsell had stronger ratings in mid-summer last year than Days has this spring with Griffith and co.

Of course, that is covered by “all-time low”. 🙂

Not only are Days at ALL TIME LOWS in total viewers, households, share and the key female demos of W18-34 and W18-49, their numbers have been slashed in comparison to this time last year.

In total viewers Days is 11% down from last year.
In households they are down 9%. (Stats rounded to nearest percent).

But it is in the key demographics that the cuts are really deep!
In women 25-54 they are down 19%.
In women 18-49 they are down 25%
In women 18-34 they are down 47% !!!

So, compared with last year Days has lost practically HALF of its young female viewers! HALF!!

That is, quite frankly, shockingly bad. Fact is women 18-34 was Day’s lowest demo in the first place – the one they really needed to grow – instead it has been cut in HALF!

Days brought in writers whose big idea was to kill, kill, kill, and then kill some more. Kill Serena, kill Paige, kill the much-loved and Emmy-award winning character of Will, kill Aiden, kill the much-loved and legendary character of Bo, kill supporting characters like Wendy, kill Daniel, kill Stefano, kill Ava, kill Clark. And those they didn’t literally kill they killed with complete character destruction. They wreaked character-destruction on everybody related to Will by having them disinterested in investigating his death, and acting as if Will never existed, and having Sonny abandon his two-year old daughter after her biological father had been murdered, and turning Kate, who would really be pursuing justice for Will at all costs, into someone basically shrugs her shoulders, and then randomly turns into an unhinged bitch. They’ve wrecked Hope. They destroyed and canned Eric. They’ve wrecked everything they’ve touched. They’ve wrecked the show!

These headwriters Dena Higley and Josh Griffith took a scythe to the twenty to thirty somethings. Turn one into a murderer. Have two murdered. Turn another insane. Backburn with extreme prejudice another. Have another vanish without trace. Oops two young actresses just walked at the end of their contracts – perhaps turned off by the sudden anti-equality hate-messaging broadcast by the show! And then they introduce newly sorassed teens to replace them – and hey presto – they turn one of those into a rapist, another into a rape victim, and another into a murderer!

Higley and Griffith sold this to Ken Corday – and he bought it! There’s a big problem right there! How on earth could anyone have bought this? And the NBC execs like Bruce Evans who are supposed to work closely with the show, just let it all happen! NBC had the opportunity to have Dena Higley removed during the negotiations, but she was kept on. Sorry Michael, but there has been failure at every level of the leadership of this show, and how can they restore faith and bring back viewers when they have so failed at every level of leadership? Some people say NBC need to buy out Corday, but seeing as NBC let this all happen in the first place, I have zero faith that they would fix things. And Sony? Sony is in disarray with heads rolling there – but they let this happen too! They don’t have a clue!

Young people look to the future with hope and positivity and excitement. The early era of Will and Sonny had that, but Days drowned that in the bathtub. They killed Will, and threw a party on the show, and in real life. They had his cousin Abby refer to Will as one of “those people” who were killed. And then they made her insane. If something is ugly and ghastly that’s what they put on screen! And now, as Higley and Griffith have spread their destruction far and wide, and destroyed many people’s favorite characters, the chickens are finally coming home to roost. I feel sorry for the multitudes of employees at Days who are not responsible for this mess. Their leaders did this!

Young people have little time for Dark Days of Death, with it’s dark nonsense, and homophobia, morbidity, and sexism, and general immorality and hopelessness.

That said, ANYTHING is possible with the goodwill of the audience. But how can they regain it from the fans they have insulted? As another commentator said: instead of sending the fans a love-letter for their fiftieth anniversary, they sent a hate-letter! How now can they regain their lost audience’s trust?

I’m certainly not interested in watching STORIES from people who are okay with the broadcasting of hate-messaging, and who can’t even perform that most basic of social functions: which is to acknowledge their mistakes and offer an apology. Clearly Days isn’t interested in doing that, so … well they’d better hope they can attract new viewers to replace the ones they threw away with great force! Good luck with that!

THREE murdered in the twenty and thirty somethings. There’s been so many murders, it’s been hard to keep track! 🙂

Well said, Steven. Days had so much going for it. It had popular couples. It had a sense of nostalgia and excitement. It had goodwill, with people wanting it to survive. Why Ken Corday thought two unoriginal and mean hacks like Dena & Josh could save the show is beyond me. Nearly everything they did was completely inappropriate and insulting for a celebration. They pandered to the worst and meanest impulses of the audience and they got rid of a number of important legacy characters that were important to the canvas, especially Will and Eric. Why they thought the boring and lackluster Hernandez family were more important than the Bradys and Hortons, I have no idea. They are all dull and nothing has been done to establish their characters, and Rafe and Gabi have been on for years. They also hired a bunch of green teens and threw them into a dark, amoral and mean series of stories involving rape and murder. None of them were up to the material, sadly. Last year, people wanted better stories for their favorites like Will and Eric, not to see those characters destroyed with maximum malice. The elephant story was so maligned, but all they needed to do make Nicole the heroine, Serena the villain and have Eric remove the stick up his rear and stop being a jerk. Will needed to stop being so insecure and tell Sonny to go jump in the river with Paul if that’s what he wanted (though I thought Paul and Will had the best chemistry, sue me). People wanted to see what would happen when it turns out that Bo hadn’t abandoned Hope but she had moved on with a good man. But Dena Higley is too much of a coward for any of that. She had to destroy, kill and retcon anything that was a threat to her precious Hernandez clan and she’s still employed there. I’m not interested in Rafe. I’m not interested in seeing Aiden bludgeoned to prop Rafe, and I’m certainly not interested in watching a version of Sonny was using Will to get over Paul and then walked out on Arianna. It’s all very ugly and unpleasant and amoral.

I get that PR wanted to retire, and I get that JM couldn’t really work much anymore due to his age and health. So, they could have had a Bo dies story that was epic and long, not quick and shoddy and done to prop Rafe. They could have had a canvas wide Stefano dies for real story. But instead, they went for cheap, mean and ugly….and now they really have very little left for viewers to invest it.

This was one of the most disappointing sweeps in memory. I normally look forward to May because the soaps usually bring their A game, but not this time. Days is obviously just filling time until August when the new writers stuff will air. Josh’s stuff was most likely dumped, or reworked just to keep the show afloat until after the Olympics and it is showing– what normally should take a day or two has been stretched out to an entire week or weeks in some cases, the pacing is so slow even turtles are saying, Dude speed it up— and next week numbers will be worse what will the holiday and all the tennis coverage

Over at CBS Y&R and B&B both were okay but nothing to write home about. I find Y&R reliance on stereotyping it’s characters growing old fast. By now Victoria has run Newman alone and various positions that she shouldn’t still be this insecure little girl wondering if she has what it takes to fill her Daddy’s shoes. Sharon keeping another big secret for what she thinks are good motives but aren’t– no growth, doesn’t she remember what it was like when Faith was stolen from her by Adam–Nick the self righteous hypocrite, Victor temper tantrum because his family “betrayed” him, on and on– can’t one character show some growth.

GH– this Nurse’s Ball was the weakest in terms of entertainment– the stories around the ball were okay, at least characters have their moments of realness, like Alexis coming to terms to who she really married– the trouble with GH is too many characters to juggle, if they could par it down and expand the depth of stories around a selected few characters instead of trying to jam in more characters the show would be better

If May sweeps were this dull I shudder to think how bad it will be this summer when all soaps slow down on their stories

May “Sleeps!”

May sweeps also disappointed me. generally May sweeps is to hook people during the summer when less people watch tv,but that wasn’t the case this year. the ratings could go lower as more people do summer activities

Doldrums? Try historic lows in total viewers and all the tracked demographics. During May sweeps! Try Jack’s hyped return being a total flop. Try a 47% drop from last year in the 18-34 demo. Remember when you and the read of the obsequious and pathetic soap media declared Days saved and revived? How long did those modest gains last? Six weeks, tops – then total collapse. I suppose we can expect a “the new regime will save days and the cast is excited” article by next week, right?

Days made the big mistake of taking the dark road both with lighting and stories with all these dead people . The 50th should have been a CELEBRATION : Patch Kayla , Jack Jen , Bo Hope , Anna Tony , Kim Shane would have reunited and gotten back together , a few of the couples would have remarried . Susan Martin , Marie Horton , Bill horton and Laura Horton would have returned . Julie Williams ( an original character ) would have had a car crash , ended up in a coma , had an out of body experience and through flashbacks remembered all of Julie ‘s stories for over 50 years , then her guardian angel through flashbacks would have reminded us viewers of all the great stories from the 50 years of the show . Once the 50th had passed Bill and Laura would have become the new Tom and Alice and the Hortons would have been rebuilt through Mike , Jennifer , their children and spouses . A black family would have been introduced with the character of Valerie Grant as matriarch . John and Marlena would have their relationship threatened by the return of John’s old girlfriend Diana Colville ( Genie Francis ) , then once that was resolved a very much alive isabella toscano would turn up and then a twist would occur and we would learn the real Isabella really did die from her cancer and this is impostor isabella payed by evil Ernesto Toscano who still wants it out with Victor and John ! Vivian alamain would return and find a long lost daughter of hers played by julia roberts ( who is a huge fan of the show , Days would have been clever enough to get her at a reduced fee ) . Finally romance and emotion would return with these romantic , romantic music candle lit lovemaking scenes we used to enjoy . Just curious what you think guys ? Would you watch Days if these stories or type of stories were told ? Sadly i am no soap writer so can’t beg Corday to hire me ! This would be a version of Days i would watch !

This is like some of the stuff i said including flashbacks…love your idea of Julie in the accident as a way to show those flashbacks…i too wanted Susan back and revealed as Ann’s mother…she did have a daughter named Annie…many times i said bring back Valerie…we are on the same page here!!!

Sorry but Days, needs to make changes fast. Too many newbies. Bring back Anna Dimera, Calliope Jones, Vivian and Ivan. The show is sinking fast, I miss Vivian my madame. The storylines are boring, and put me to sleep lol.

Can’t seem to wrap my arms around Days these days. Seems to be all over the place with too many new characters that you do not feel close to yet. They need better storytelling to make you become invested in the storylines and want to watch. The cast is doing a good job, but something is missing on the show. They should have fewer more developed storylines going on, so you want to watch to see what happens next. It feels disjointed now. At this point, I only watch every once in awhile whereas before I watched fairly regularly.

Come on!!! They need to stop this 6 months of taking ahead.. don’t the head honchos(no credibility) understand how bad this is for this show…

STOP it now!! If you want the show to survive.. you need to stop the bad storylines.. Who the heck is in charge there? They need to be let go…

This is really hurting a credible soap and ruining it!!! Call me if you need more reasons.. why this six month of taping is BADDDDD!!!

I enjoyed this Nurses Ball more than I have in a number of years. I thought the entertainment was better, and the drama surrounding the Ball was compelling with the mystery about who drugged Lucas and Bobbie, and the mystery about what happened to Nikolas. They gave us the camp that we’ve all come to expect from the Nurses Ball, but also some poignant, emotional moments like Robin’s speech, and Anna dancing the tango with Duke one last time. It had a little something for everyone. Really thought the episodes were well done. Glad to see the ratings reflect that.

The show I personally stopped watching was B&B!!! I’ve only been watching Days a few years but I’m still entertained by it and I love GH. But I almost don’t believe B&B had its best sweeps since 2008. Show sucks right now! Half the stories are just repeats with minor twists so they can claim they are “new”. And it’s beyond predictable. Every single story going on right now is predictable. You see where it’s going from miles away! B&B I have watched for a long time so I can honestly say I’m not impressed whatsoever. Wish they could wipe the slate clean and start the year over with new stuff!

So true Gia, and whenever Brad Bell has a hint of something original happening he quickly turns it back to the same boring, predictable formula. If Liam had actually fallen in love with Quinn instead of pining and going after Steffy for that hundredth time, I might have enjoyed it, but now it is ruin, now it is the same old triangle debate will Steffy stay with Wyatt will she go back to Liam– big yawn, been there done that. And instead of Quinn having a real character change, she is acting like a love sick high school student trying to convince the boy she likes to like her too– how sad– It could have been a really refreshing love story, but now it is more of the same. And that whole waste of two days while Sasha lied about being pregnant had as much suspense in it as whether or not the sun will come up tomorrow

Rope has dominated the episodes for months and the ratings have continued to fall for months. It was great they brought Daniel Cosgrove back. Haiden fans came back and ratings in key demos went up. Then we see (and GG spoils) that Aiden is just a means to promote Rope. Haiden fans screwed over yet again and we’re not watching. Ratings back down. Dena Higley is determined to make Rafe the leading man. New actors hired to invade the canvas with Hernandez. Fan faves fired and we get the Rope show. Bye Days.

What a pile of garbage!! Ratings went up one week in the key demo and dropped dramatically the following week, -22,000 (loss every gain) and then down another -63,000. Stop with this BS that you Daniel Cosgrove fans keep spewing. He did nothing for the ratings and sweeps was about him. Fans get your message, than you hate Rafe, Rope and GG – whatever but to keep blaming him for ratings is such BS it’s ridiculous. You want to take credit for every ratings bump then be prepared to take the blame. Do DC fans only watch when he handed the perfect love story. You are not fans a Days, you are fans of one pairing – why should any one listen to you. GMAFB.

Ratings for stand alone episodes:
Aiden. 1.64
Jennifer/Jack 1.57
Hope/Bo/Zach. 1.54

Numbers don’t lie…..

Now you can GMAFB.

Why on earth GH’s ratings are up is a mystery to me, the show is so BORING under Jean and Shelly, the stories are so predictable, it’s become a chor to watch this past year.

I didn’t even finish watching Wednesday’s ep of Days. It’s just not been good lately. I don’t like the Jade-Joey storyline and then going to the commune and having Joey become even more of a criminal than he was only made it worse.

I don’t care about Dario. Wish he’d leave and he can take Summer with him.

Bringing Aiden back wasn’t particularly smart. Having Chase rape Ciara was a bad move. Casting Vivian as Ciara was an even worse move. The girl cannot act, yet they give her a lot of story. Please recast this role. I am not liking the teen stories at all.

I would like Days’ ratings to go up, with the story they’ve been doing, I’m not surprised it hasn’t.

As everyone wrings their hands about the lack of interest in daytime drama, I have to wonder if we as audiences are to blame too with our constant hunger for spoilers and insider information — granted I like a good share of it, too — we have lost a genuine sense of surprise regarding our programs. I also think we need to look at corporate hierarchies with their concerns for budgets, Q factors, and a desperate effort to make everything seem the same. As for DAYS, my soap since losing others in 2010 and 2012, I do notice the darkness of its stories. There is a great lack of romance and adventure. Look, dark drama and antiheroes may rule ratings on cable shows that give us 13 installments a year, but daytime drama is daily and should be able to delve into characters more than shock stories. It does not help shows are now produced months in advance and a seemingly same stable of writers comes and goes show to show. Commit to actors, characters, stories, and plan well ahead with story bibles. There is great drama in daily life as much as horrific deaths and murders and baby swaps and doppelgangers, tropes overly relied upon of late.

I quote you “There is great drama in daily life as much as horrific deaths and murders and baby swap and doppelganger, tropes …” There is pleasure in happy times, happiness, and the rising above the troubles of daily life. There is humor once in a while that is such a pleasure.

There seems to be a lack of core characters which glue the programs together. I wouldn’t watch “Friends” without the friends. Enough said. I always enjoy reading comments. It seems we all like soaps. For me every time the stories begin to open my eyes something dulls them. Perhaps writing is therapy to ease one’s distress. Then I set the recording.

Many fans wanted Days to kill of Will (and others) and wreck havoc. Now they’re crying Boo Hoo! Too bad. Days is almost beyond saving … in fact, it may be beyond saving. And the show has only itself to blame. Hate is no way to celebrate a 50th Anniversary!

GH was just great in that last week of May. Good ratings report to close out May sweeps for GH! Third straight week the show was up in viewership (+51,000, +18,000, and +112,000) and hopefully that will continue. GH gets a passing grade from me for the month of May. The first week was pretty boring and uneventful but the next three weeks were entertaining and eventful so overall I would give a B+ cause that second week and fourth week had a little bit of everything you could ask for in an hour. We had some entertaining, compelling, complex, unpredictable, and gripping drama mixed in with some heartfelt poignant moments with some fun lighter moments and a few explosive confrontations. Loving Laura/Kevin and Kiki/Dillon. Loving Carly vs Ava, Hayden vs Liz, and Monica/Finn vs Dr. O.

Don’t watch the show but with 2dayz current up 2 the minute society that we live in Tim may very well b right on….

Okay, I can only speak for myself ~ when ABC-TV cancelled ALL MY CHILDREN, and then the on-line re-launch didn’t really fly, I chose Days of Our Lives as a soap to follow. At first, it was great with Will, Sammi, Sonny and Paul and Paige as the shy daughter of Eve. Then, one by one these characters dropped off the canvas and were replaced with the astonishingly uninteresting Belle and her whiney daughter (who should restrict any further vocal efforts to the shower) and the duller than dishwater Phillip.
What I once viewed as an innovative soap depicting gay relationships and interesting characters has acquiessed into the same old tired soap storylines that have been done to death since the days of Radio.
They need to bring back Sonny, get him involved with Paul, and get rid of characters who aren’t “clicking” with audiences. No one seems to care for the new “grown up” Ciarra (sp?) so for cryin’ out loud, write her out already. Have her visit an Aunt on the West Coast and come back a year from now embodied by another actress.
Does anyone read these posts? Are our comments really of value? I am trying to be constructive and not just critical – Days of Our Lives writers need to get on the stick
and soon.

I wished Valerie was on more during May. Where’s the family scenes for the other families. where’s the friendship at. When will Valerie have more scenes with her family. General Hospital can get boring sometimes.

I wish they would re cast Jordan. The actress who plays her is dreadful. She clicks around in her high heels slipping her hair extensions around while smirking like a teenager. She does not act the way one would imagine a police commissioner to act–seriously and with dignity.
I think the actress who played Evanjolene from OLTL would be perfect as Jordan.

the end of Days is near. the show is so bad. no romance, just darkness. they need to turn some lights on because i can’t see anything. Y&R needs a regime change. the show is a snoozefest, too many bad storylines. Y&R saw a small bump with Sage’s death, now their ratings are going down again

If you look at all the posts and the length of them, you can see people are very invested and passionate about the show, so Days has a significant audience, but the show is Dark both figuratively and literally, and seems to be turning people off including this viewer that wants to watch, but puts the show on and it is dark storylines, revolving door casts that you just cannot connect and invest in it. Give us more stable storylines and the vet cast and we will watch. We want Days to stay on, but give us the nostalgia and continuity that many of us want.

Amen, Rj. I don’t care one iota about Rafe’s parents, or the impending arrival of ‘the friend’. A love interest for Rafe? Is this a stupid attempt to sidetrack Rafe from sniffing at Hope’s skirts?
And, those teens!!!! Golly gee!! Don’t get me wrong; I love having youth on any show….but, allow these kids to act their age; have fun; have parties; go to school dances and events. Girls talking about boys in a positive way. Rape in not an everyday word of conversation. They should be discussing THE WEEKND; ONE DIRECTION….talk about hair and make up. You know, what kids that age do and talk about.
Instead they are thrown in mud….rape, murder, running away and so on. What kind of adults will they make?

I would say looks like it’s lights out for Days, but from some posts it sounds like they’ve already turned the lights out. Not a great way to save on the budget, sets, etc. Just because viewers can’t see it doesn’t mean it’s good, and I would say the ratings reflect that. You can only step on most people so many times before they get that you only think they’re good for a doormat. All the soaps need to have a little respect for their viewers!

Please get Jasam off my tv, #borefest

Days Of Our Lives

Stephen Schnetzer Talks On His Return to Days of our Lives and Working with Susan Seaforth Hayes In Emotional Episodes

Who says you can’t go home again? In the case of Another World favorite, Stephen Schnetzer (ex-Cass Winthrop), he has proven that it is true, and you can go back to your soap roots and where it all started for you.

Last week on April 11th, Schnetzer, along with several other key returns were on set at Days of our Lives taping all-new episodes of the Peacock streaming soap opera, centering on the funeral of Doug Williams (the late Bill Hayes), and as part of the iconic soap opera’s 15,000th episode.

Stephen is reprising his first daytime role as Steve Olson, the brother of Julie Williams (Susan Seaforth Hayes). The last time Schnetzer appeared on a DAYS set was during his one and only run on the show from 1978 to 1980. Clearly, viewers will be in for some very emotional scenes when Steve returns to Salem to be there for his sister, Julie in her time of need. In real-life, Susan has been going through her own grief, having just lost Bill back on January 12th at the age of 98.

Photo: NBC

Michael Fairman TV caught up with Stephen during the 15K episode celebration ceremony, and during a break from taping the gut-wrenching funeral scenes, to get his thoughts on being part of these highly-anticipated moments that will air later this year in December. Here’s what he shared with us below.

What has this been like for you to work with Susan Seaforth Hayes after all of these years?

STEPHEN: She’s a dream and she’s so bright. We ran lines yesterday and we ended up just visiting for about 45 minutes and just catching up and telling tales about each other’s career. She even dropped off the autobiography that she and Bill did. And being back here at DAYS, every time I turn a corner, there’s another familiar face. When I was on the show 40 more years ago, a bunch of the guys, played softball on a team together. This is really a trip down memory lane as I knew it would be.

Photo: JPI

Taping Doug’s funeral must be a hard day for Susan. Are you checking in with her to help hold her up through this?

STEPHEN: I am and I’m checking in with Amy Shaughnessy (Susan’s assistant), and she’s holding her up more than anybody. We’re there for each other.

There will obviously be some major hankie-inducing moments when Steve comes back to Salem to console his sister.

STEPHEN: Oh, wait till you see it in December. It’s going to be great.

Were you surprised you got this call to come back to the show decades later?

STEPHEN: It was out of the blue! I was completely surprised. They should have called me decades ago! That’s what surprised me. When Another World went down, I thought I’d land somewhere else and it never happened. That was more of a surprise.

Photo: JPI

Cass is such an identifiable character for you. As well, you and Linda Dano (ex-Felicia Gallant) are so synonymous together as best friends Cass and Felicia from Another World. When fans heard you were reprising your role as Steve Olson on DAYS, they are now hoping there will be more of you on the show to come.

STEPHEN: Steven Olson is a real “Cassian “character. I cut my teeth on Steve Olson and that’s how Cass was introduced. He was kind of a roguish charmer. And then when the character stuck for Another World, they rehabilitated me, and turned me into one of the shows heroes. And that’s what would’ve happened if I stayed as Steve Olson probably. So, Steve is the ‘pre-Cass’, Cass.

Photo: JPI

As the story goes, you originally decided to leave Days of our Lives?

STEPHEN: I was never on contract. I was doing a day and a half a week and I got a Broadway play directed by Franco Zeffirelli starring Joan Plowright and Frank Finlay. I was able to it as I didn’t have to break a contract or anything. I cut loose and went back to New York for that.

How well did you get to know Bill Hayes during your first time around on DAYS?

STEPHEN: My first episode was with Bill and Susan, as her long lost brother coming into Salem. They were so good to me. They were so kind. I had been doing eight years of classical repertory theater, never been in front of a camera. I tell everybody, it took me longer than any other actor I’ve ever seen to get comfortable in front of a camera. And they were very supportive at that time in my career. Coming back to honor Bill now in 2024, and to be see Susan, I am just so happy to be here.

Looking forward to seeing the scenes between Stephen and Susan Seaforth Hayes come December and Doug’s funeral and surrounding episodes? Do you hope that DAYS might bring the character of Steve Olson back for a longer stay? Comment below.
