RATINGS: General Hospital Hits New Low In Women 18-49! All Shows Down In Total Viewers!

The ratings are in for the week July 1-5th and it was not a good week for soaps all around, and especially for General Hospital in the key 18-49 female demo where the ABC soap hit an all-time low in viewers! GH had  523,000 viewers where its previous low in the category had been 527,000 back in February of 2o12!  In addition, GH remained in the fourth slot of the four network shows with 2,332,000 total viewers with a loss of -121,000 for this ratings period.  However the good news, is that GH was still up 90,000 over this time last year.

Is General Hospital’s airtime of the new characters played by Roger Howarth, Kristen Alderson, and Michael Easton … Franco, Kiki and Silas bringing the ratings down?  Or, is it fans are not clicking with Morgan Corinthos and/or the story with Kiki and Michael?

The Young and the Restless remained firmly at number one, but lost the most viewers for the week with -160,000, but still came in with a tally of 4,396,000, and it is behind 109,000 from this time last year! Y&R did gain viewers in the key 18-34 and 18-49 female demo, however.

The Bold and the Beautiful remained at number two reporting in with 3,423,000 total viewers and is up over this time last year +308,000. B &B was the show to beat this ratings period as Taylor let everyone know Brooke and Bill’s little secret, their fling and Brooke’s pregnancy, and Katie became unglued because of it, and was ready to get payback on Dollar Bill and her sister!

Days of our Lives remained in the third spot ahead of General Hospital with 2,597,000  and down -68,000 this week,  but up over last year at this time  +188,000.   The NBC soap held steady in all the other key demos.  Father Eric’s side effects from the drugs Kristen slipped him, Theresa coming to town and meeting JJ, and the grand jury decided not to send Sami to trial,  were a few of the highlights!    You can view the entire ratings picture courtesy of SON here!

OK soap fans, time for you to be our Soap Opera Programming Executive Armchair Quarterback! What would you do to fix your favorite soaps and increase their ratings?  What storylines and characters are working for you? Which, are not? Are you tuning out to General Hospital? The Young and the Restless? Comment below!

Give us storylines with our vets!!!

The vets are have good stories and on every day..
perhaps writing a list of how many vets are on daily would be good for you to do 🙂

Scenes lasting less than 30 seconds for a couple of times scattered around are not what we had in mind.

The vets are not the answer. The writing is the answer. The vets will not be what brings the ratings back up. The show is a mess and it needs a change in writer and executive producer.

These two with their favoring of Roger Howarth are ruining the show. The show is in the basement, and it is really sad.

And they refuse to take any criticism. If you try to give it to them through social media they either through insults back at you or block you.

If the show gets cancelled we will have Frank Valentini and Ron Carlivati to thank

Its like they are both eleven. They write like that, they edit like that and they conduct their social media like that.

I think GH had a great ratings bounce leading up to and leading out of the April 50th Anniversary celebration. People who were fans in the 80’s and 90’s couldn’t help but see some of the GH stars talking up the series on talk shows, game shows and in magazines and newspapers. So these lapsed fans tuned in to see what was up. Once their favorites (Laura, Frisco, Noah, etc.) from the heydays got sidelined or left the show altogether, these former fans became former viewers again.

I’ll continue to watch as long as Anthony Geary is on as Luke, even if he disappears every year from December to February and again from July to September. When the day comes he leaves the series for good, I don’t know if I’ll continue to watch…UNLESS they bring Robert Scorpio back FULL-TIME!

As far as the new characters being portrayed by ME, RH and KA, I’ve addressed that in previous posts so I won’t repeat myself here 🙂

Exactly! i told all my friends & family who were former GH fans, that GH was REALLY GOOD again! And they watched. But after the Nurse’s Ball, GH went right back to being mediocre, or, as my mother-in-law put it, “stupid”. We want to see our favorites, but that’s not enough. They need to have an interesting, engaging storyline. I have already quit watching as of the end of May .. like you, I am missing Robert Scorpio. Anna&Duke are just boring without him. GH needs a HERO! A magnetic leading man. They could (and should) have made MAC the hero, but they didn’t. They wanted us to root for Sonny, whom I view as a despicable excuse for a human being, lol. But no amount of bringing back the vets can make up for poor storytelling.

GH has been a hot mess for MONTHS. Franco, Silas, and Kiki are not working. BUH-BYE to all three.

Sounds like you need to be watching OLTL on OWN. You were CONFUSED as to which program you were watching.

No big deal//

BB and Y&R lost more than GH <——– no need to bash GH ..

It is summer and many are traveling etc etc ..
GH is up from last year at this time, that is good..

I really like the 3's new characters..
They ate still being broken in like a tight new pair of shoes..

I really love Silas!! wow!! ME is rocking the character..

RH was made for Franco, and there is so much to come, his story is just beginning ..
Franco fan, here!!

KA has really grown and is doing a great job!!

I'm looking forward to all the new stories to develop !!!

I think ABC pays you to be so optimistic about GH…….Don’t believe you are convincing anyone but yourself.

Yeah, excuses and more excuses for GH. It was a holiday week, a repeat, a preemption, etc. Yada, yada, yada.

Folks, when you get right down to it, the ratings are down simply because the show sucks right now. Nothing more than that. Case closed.

its hard to believe y &r is the number one show when days of our life won number one and got an emmy..general hospital is a great show and it doesnt suck. every show`s viewers use those same excuses thats nothing new.

Tali ..
I love GH. it is very good..
I am happy with it.. not trying to convince anyone, I am happy with GH, and that is all that matters to me 🙂
I would never watch something I do not like, like you appear to be doing…
I would not punish myself watching anything I did not like that would be foolish to watch something I did not like,,..

I really like GH and enjoy it..
it is just stories ..

I am a very loyal fan, but I think that, in general, fans get turned off when they do the whole incest thing. The Kiki/Michael story is lame.

There is no incest story, none..

in some states 1st cousins can marry
anyways it will work out for them, there will be a twist, wait for it to become what is planed..
… there is no incest , incest is between siblings/brother & sister .. ..

besides gh would never write a incest story, guess i have more faith in them then others do

Well when I watched they were DEFINITELY hinting it was incest,. As far as some states allowing 1st cousins to marry ewwww sorry gross!! I love GH I have watched for 40 yrs and the story lines aren’t great right now. They need to start using the older characters they are the reason GH is still around.

It was a holiday week. Many people were away or at gatherings. Chill.

I think we are seeing too much Sonny again and I do not like the personality of the new Morgan.

GH is a disaster right now. I recently tuned out , no more PVR and I had watched GH since 89.
Maurice Benard is the only reason I will tune in, but even his storylines are nothing thanks to the head writer. The OLTL 3 are on waaaay tooo much, I think they have been 3-4 characters each. (Stupid)
And TOO MANY NEWBIES no one cares for. Long time GH fans have been totally ignored even crossed by the incompetent writer.
To fix GH…
More Sonny, Sam, Luke etc (core GH characters)
Less OLTL people’s.
And get rid of the terrible newbies ( boooorrring)

Jason, Lulu(real), Johnny, now Connie & Spinelli gone or leaving?!?!!!

All newbies & bloody OLTL characters are still here??!! ( they should be gone )

Re: Y&R – The storylines that aren’t working for me are Dylan/Chelsea and that’s mainly because I find Dylan boring. He brings Chelsea down to the point where she is boring. I honestly think they could get rid of the character and no one would care.

The other storyline that isn’t working for me is mysterious Rose. This is another one that I have no interest in following and usually fast forward through. I’d much rather have Neil more involved in one of the corporate storylines maybe making a play for Chancellor or something.

I am enjoying the paternity storyline and the fallout. The actors there are bringing it to the max.

But my favorite storyline is Lauren and Michael’s. All the things that have played out over the last few months have been some of their best work. Good writing!

I’m enjoying Roger’s portrayal of Franco, and I’m starting to like Silas, but NuMorgan is terrible and I hate the way Cartini is shoving Michael and Kiki down our throats.

Britt/Patrick/Sabrina is getting interesting. Olivia/Sonny/Connie is interesting . Nikolas/Elizabeth/Aj is also interesting. I like the idea that Sam wants to find her father. Tracy/Luke/Laura storyline is good to. And Lulu/Dante/Maxie with the baby storyline is great too. Carly/Sonny/Ava/Alexis/Sean is really the best storyline. They would bring up those storylines to get the rating back on top.

GH needs to get back to basics. Focus on Laura, Luke, Tracy, Felicia, Mac Frisco, Anna and Robert Scorpio…and all of their children. Nikolas, Lulu, Maxie, Robin etc. That’s your show. And it’s a good one.

Forget the newbies. First person who needs to go is Sabrina. She is a major FAIL. Can’t watch her. And as much as I love One Life to Live…these new characters are horrible. I also don’t like Eva Jerome at all.

I was very happy to see Georgie back, and to hear Connie is leaving. That’s a step in the right direction.

It’s summer! Everyone takes a vacation, including the actors. Whatever is missed during the day, fans catch up watching their favorite soap on either Soapnet, Hulu or on the networks website. I’m sure if all the numbers were added up from the different medias, they’d be thrilled.

GH ís not making good use of its legacy characters – Laura, Scotty, Lucy, AJ. I keep waiting for relevant story lines for them, but none have appeared other than the crazy vampire story and the waste of the Ccasadine story to introduce new Lulu. This is a great opportunity to reconstitute the Qs, but that family drama is a caricatue of what used to be. I’m not going to waste time on Olivia and her visions. Quirky, but not in a good way.

Y&R- storylines that need to die out-Dylan&Chelsea because she annoys the crap out of me with her one expression acting, Victoria&Billy because the less I see of Victoria the better I feel. Adam/Victor/andthatannoyingchic, what the heck is Y&R doing????

GH-Kiki/Micael/Morgan-boring and no chemistry whatsoever between either character, it’s so hard to watch Kiki with anyone, especially since kiki has a meaning in my family which is not so flattering.

I’d like to know the ratings for Y&R for the week of 7/8/13, I bet they were through the roof. The Jack/Nick/Summer/Phyllis storyline are some of the best episodes I’ve seen in years.

I love Y&R as much as ever. I’m sad to hear that Michelle Stafford is leaving. However, the storyline with Summer/Kyle/Nick/Jack has been fodder for some amazing performances. I love Dylan and Chelsea but miss the amazing Adam (M Muhney). I know he’ll be back in full force soon though. B&B is another favorite on my DVR, but had been going stale with the whole Liam/Steffie/Hope triangle ad nauseum. They also rely much too heavily on recap (memory) fodder for a 1/2 hour show. Move the story along people!

Never liked the Franco character so even if they want to change him, redeem him etc., even Roger can’t change my mind. Liked him waaay better as Todd with brown hair. Like Kristen, she’s a hard working actress, but really dislike the name Kiki. Morgan doesn’t do it for me either…but maybe the storyline they’ve given him doesn’t help. I know its summertime/teen stuff, but this year it’s really a bore.

GH has, IMHO, been systematically destroyed since February 2012 with the arrival of the new team. Months of time was spent watching a baby switch with a character (Tea) from another show. Some viewers did not know and did not care about this character. More time was spent on the Kate/Connie story. Johnny was thrown into insta-romance with Carly which left me wondering how that would ever happen. My personal favorites, Dante and Lulu, were left with no story for months. Todd and John McBain were given a lot of screen time. Months later, John was made into Steven Clay, a vampire. Now, ME is playing yet another character, Silas. Sorry, but I don’t care about John, Steven, or Silas. The return of Franco is another major misstep. Franco was made by a movie star and had a very dark personality. The new Franco is just another shade of Todd. Kiki, simply stated, is an embarrassment. I cannot stand to see her on screen. The insta-attraction to Michael is just not understandable and so contrived. I stopped watching the show and am relying on reading recaps to see if the show can be turned around. I firmly believe that a new team is needed. This one, relies on insta-romance and contrived plot point stories. The cast it about double the size that is reasonable and weeks can pass without seeing your favorites. The only fans that will be happy are those fans of nuFranco, Kiki, Ava, and Silas.

GH keeps those actor/actresses away from where they belong tho – One Life to Live. Just a way for ABC to give it to Prospect Park and ruin another soap opera and it’s ratings.

All three actors changed their lives to become part of GH. I didn’t mind them as their former characters, and I still Like ME. I abhor Franco and I can’t stand to see him on screen (would have always disliked him but the constant screen time, now coupled with the completely hackneyed “Is Franco Jason” tangent, I have to turn it off from being so appalled at the writing.) I feel for Roger Horwath. His schtick as Todd was entertaining. But, at this point the only thing for TPTB to do is to let him go with a big bonus so he can move on.

people don’t like the franco & silas characters..But give it a chance cause its getting REAL good now!!! Thank God for Ava!!!!!

Franco is starting to develop!! and I like Franco, and Silas!!!
they only just begun, I’m looking forward to what is to come!!
gotta felling its going to be really good, also !!

Franco is developing? Is Ava going to get him a training bra?

I hope none of the cheerleaders make fun of her.

We keep saying that we don’t like the storylines with Franco/Todd and Kiki and Michael but no one seems to care and as a result they’re losing what was their main fan base, the older women.

The writers don’t seem to realize that teenagers aren’t the main fans of this show and most people don’t want to turn on their telly and watch someone come to work and play with his real life girl friend on the show every day. The fact that their characters are “supposed” to be cousins makes it super creepy, and her flashing her new assets all the time doesn’t make it all better as far as I’m concerned. Having them find out they aren’t cousins later doesn’t change the fact that they think they are now.

And the character of Franco can never be redeemed as far as I’m concerned. ( And most others too it seems) It’s another case of RH dominating our screen at the expense of all the GH vets, most of whom pop up once every 2 weeks or so and whose storylines have been lost in the great abyss so that we can watch more imports.

As long as this foolishness continues the old GH fans will keep leaving and they’re not going to come back until it starts to look like General Hospital again. Let’s hope it’s not too late by then.

You cannot speak for all the fans, many are lovin GH .. 🙂

you could read a book and not watch GH if it is so terrible for you just move on to something else 🙂

Or we could convey our feedback so the writers and producers understand why they have lost almost 500,000 viewers since Franco and Kiki started hogging the entire show.

Days needs to bring back John now and give him and Doc their own story. SUPER COUPLE. Showcase Maggie and Victor. We like our longtime vets on our Tv screens, Get Maxie and Spinilli back together.
Love any scene with Luke and Tracy, they are dynamite . Am so loving Maura West’s scenes with Michael Eastonl.

Its summer…time to do other things away from home…ratings should be down…GH has its problems like all soaps…itll be great again…many viewers tuned it just to see the shows 50th and vets return…it didnt mean most would stay…

It always surprises me that people complain “soaps” are boring in the summertime– because they have always been like that. TPTB know people are away, or out enjoying the outdoors, not sitting home watching soaps. They aren’t going to waste their best stuff on summer viewers. I was actually shocked this whole fall out with the paternity tests on Y&R happened now- suspect MS leaving forced them to move it up a notch.
Also some soap actors are enjoying holidays too- so they go MIA — usually we get teen romances and newbies at this time of year- it is par for the course, not worry about the ratings one bit.
If this was happening during a Sweeps Week– that would be a different story but in the summer when story lines are less than stellar anyway and during a holiday weekend- what can you expect. People need to realize the only thing really hot during the summer is the weather–

You always have the most rationable, intelligent, well-thought out comments…the best on this message board…thanks for the reply.

There is only one soap that rivals the excitement that GH use to have, Days of our Lives.

I can’t believe our good fortune. LOL… i mean really…. far too long… decades even… DAYS has been overlooked… ie: emmy’s. let’s beat up on DAYS….

well… I am shouting from the roof tops, well.. on this site any way.. how fun it is to be a Salem’ite.

Brady is surprising me… with his – is he or isn’t he – attracted to Kristen… and/or is he working his own agenda to figure out w/Nicole… what’s going on with his brother… father Eric. at the very least… there’s still worthy story and scenes to shoot with Kristen and Brady. and it’s still scintillating.. even with the MIA John and Marlena. I can’t help but be drawn to Eileen Davidson’ acting. I’m smitten… from her genoa city/days to belongs on Soaps.

Adrienne…. she’s getting story… and oh… shiver me timbers… she’s nutting up. LOL. and that’s ok… because … dang.. doesn’t she resonate.. so much endearment for her… cause you love to watch her act. she’s the real deal. like I said… motherload angst is one thing…. if this gives her and Justin story…

I hope the writers… delve in to Maggie more… than just Daniel’s mother… she’s mother henned that to death. and I’ll even put up with this… since it’s Maggie. I watch her delivering her scripts… and I thought… hummm.. what if she was to liken us with Piper Laurie…. LOL… miss Carrie’s mother. imbibe in the bottle… rattle the Kiriakis Manse… throw Victor for a loop… and watch him fight for his at last true love. there’s so much love between these two.

Blake Berris… is so damned handsome… he continually throws me off guard… his acting ability… its stunning to envision his take and how his mind works.

Kate and Rafe. I had to laugh… at Rafe’s dreaming while in a coma… he’s rafe’alicious with some dingbat… but… i’m with Kate… he’s a handsome Man. dang! when they film him at all angles… you take leave and pontificate… what if… oh… lucky Kate. she can real vulnerable… the setting up of he may or may not remember his past and or mix it all up… is he still married to Sami… and/or how could a guy not recall how good those trysts are with Kate… and yet she’s “masking” her emotions… cause of the feelings and wonderment…

Happy DAYS

Days and B&B are my favorite soaps right now. Y&R needs to use its newbies better. GH is my least favorite right now. The three OLTL’s are bringing down the show. GH needs to concentrate more on its vets.

I hate to say but……..

Silas and Sam…What for-YUCK!

Because I want Sam to have another child with or without Danny but that child is

I think Kelly Monaco and Michael Easton make a great couple!!

But they can leave FILM NOIR GIRL OUT THE MIX

Unless they try to do TAYLOR vs REYNOLDS

A lot of us OLTL fans just started watching to see the continuation of Todd, Starr and McBain’s storylines. I thought those transitions were handled fairly well and those characters brought me into the GH storylines. NOW however, we have OLTL back (even on TV now) and the former OLTL actors are now in new roles that we have no investment in. I can definitely see how people who enjoyed their former roles, and enjoyed the 50th anniversary nostalgia would start tuning out as it has become practically a brand new show.

Something needs to change and fast. I am all for new characters and for integration. But slowly. What we are seeing is saturation. Viewers are not invested in these characters because there is no history.

They have to realize they hit 2 year highs in December, not with the OLTL3 front and center, but with legacy characters like Robert, Anna, Robin and Faison. Since then its been hit and miss with heavy promo for the 50th that produced a spike, but nothing to write home about because the 50th centered on another new character and her Cinderella complex.

The character of Anna Devane has been basically MIA since December and all the other vets brought in for publicity are on like 3-5 times a month. While practically every single day since May we have stories that are centered on 4 new characters (Franco, Ava, Kiki & Silas), not a good strategy.

i think GH can recoup, hate to sound like a broken record, but GH is still better then Y&R and bb, so i’m not hating, kudos to their viewers for sticking with their shows. GH does need to get their act together, maybe this is a wake up call to the shows runner and head writer, they got to set their egos aside and do the right thing, the show needs to be more balance, give us vets in lead storylines. Genie Francis and Finola Hughes should not be playing second banana to know one. Rebecca Herbst should be the shows young leading lady not Sam, and don’t leave us hanging with other storylines, like Robert Scorpio. i don’t mind the the ex oltl transplant in their new rows, just make sure they are intergrated with the vets, love seeing jane elliot act opposite Roger Howarth. The show should of made Silas a writer or novelist with a journalsim background this way they could play off on Michael Easton novelist background, and this would of made silas more interesting, since he could of been involved in storylines with the cops, ect..

Since the soaps had been having increasing rating…think this might have something to do with the fact that it was 4th of July week?

The ME/KA/RH/RC/FV déjà vu ratings formula; shove them down the audience throat and the only ones truly enjoying it are the fangurls/fanguys with RC & FV leading the fan gurls & guys cheering section. The only thing is missing is the stupid & insulting luv that was Gigi & Rex, oh wait, they have been replaced by Sabrina & Patrick wuv. Sad part is this is how as a viewer, I was insulted by the 2 Todd rewrite because I felt OLTL was gutted when RH returned & this show was already on the chopping block. RC/FV did not learn their lesson that a soap is an ensemble & one character or actor & in this case five new characters which include Ava, does not make the show. They need to get their head outta their derrière and write for the ensemble with decent non insulting & disgusting stories.

Same for Y&R, SB is just the RH of Y&R & they also need to get their heads outta their derrière and both shows front runners need to know their stuff is smelling bad & rotted or network executives need to show them the door and get individuals who understand ensemble shows, my opinion.

General hospital will be cancelled next year. i know that for a fact. Gh is so boring right now. A new talk show will replace gh. next year. abc wants reality shows and talk shows. way cheaper to produce. abc wants out of the soap business. Days of our lives and the bold and the beautiful are terrific shows. great acting and good writing. The nu one life to live sucks big time. it will be cancelled again. terrible storylines and poor writing.

No way..
GH will go on for years to come..
it is the best it has been in years and more love it than have need to complain about it..
Doom and Gloomer’s have their own dark depressing club lol ..
there are many more who like GH and see a future for it., the happy club. 🙂

su0000, Are you on some kind of medication? Did you actually type that above with a straight face? You actually find this stale, pathetic crap that those two hacks are putting onscreen entertaining??? Unbelievable. If you seriously think that GH in its current state “is the best it has been in years”, that’s really sad and pathetic. Gosh, I wouldn’t want to be near the show right now if the quality dropped even a little.

Have you looked at the most recent weekly ratings? And no excuses about it being summer, a holiday week, etc. I’d hate to see GH get cancelled, but if the show continues in this downward spiral into the fall and beyond, it’s sadly going to be a real possibility and it would probably be justified. Quite frankly, I’d much rather see GH leave the air with class and dignity than limp on and on as the unwatchable hot mess it has become. It’s painful and almost to the point of tarnishing the show’s long legacy, sad to say. The show desperately needs a new EP and HW to try to get the show back on track ASAP. I just hope ABC steps in before it’s too late.

It has to be meds…..

Who are you, Madame Delphina? You wish…..

At best, what you’re written are guesses. But what I suspect you want more than anything else is some attention.

Enjoy cuz this is all you’re going to get.

I’ve taken both GH and Y&R off my dvr. I read recaps and usually record on Fridays but even then I’m ff’d through both shows.

No matter how much I may appreciate Roger Howarth, this Franco mess is just that. But it’s far from the only problem. As others have said, the show had taken a creative nosedive since the anniversary and it’s not looking any better. Whatever is going on behind the scenes, or whatever ideas TPTB thought were good need to be rethought and fast. Otherwise, GH is back to disaster as it was under Guza. What a shame.

And Y&R is circling the bowl under soap killer Jill Farren Phelps. OOC behavior, obvious cast favoritism, newbies galore (a problem it shares with GH), and storylines that seem designed to alienate fans.

GH had regained storyline and character integrity under Cartini but it seems lost again. Y&R needed resusciation after the MAB regime, and instead it’s suffering under JFP the same way AMC suffered under Pratt before it got cancelled.

Folks are tuning out, some of us after more years than we care to remember. Thank God OLTL and AMC are online and better than ever, otherwise the soap world would be pretty dismal.

Get back to love in the afternoon ron.The franco storyline is horrible. I watch about twice a week till storylines improve

New lows for GH? Ouch! Hopefully Ron and Frank can bring their magic back, they had OLTL’s ratings up really well even before they were canceled.

DAYS deserves to be Number 1. That show is ON FIRE!!!!

You got that right! I record all the soaps on my dvr & then decide which to watch first. Well, I am watching DAYS first every day for a long time! Y&R is last except for the Summer/Jack reveal (that wasn’t)

I am slow sometimes-does YawneR refer to my comments about Y&R? I wouldn’t think you meant DAYS because of your name & how good that show is. Just wondering! Gotta go watch today’s DAYS!

All of the above. People do not like Kiki, Silas and Franco and Morgan.I would say Morgan is the worse of all of them for some reason. I think people are trying to like the others. But there is nothign likable or interesting, or intriguing about Morgan. The others at least have us guessing. Kiki is no STAR. Kristen is a great young actress, but she is given little to work with. Silas has no personality, too deadpan, not likeable but we are wondering at least. And Franco, well he’s a lot more likable than the former Franco but he’s no Todd. Back to the drawing board GH. Your old Morgan was much better. We loved him. You don’t need anotehr teenage story. And the cousins whether they are or aren’t- not alluring.

i agree the morgan is awful. he really is just bothersome. he comes on the screen and its just like- GO AWAY- i agree with everything you’ve written. i think these new roles realy aren’t suiting top

Ugh-this Morgan is beyond horrible. I see nothing of Sonny & Carly in either his looks or behavior or anything. He needs to go.

Get rid of the new trash and bring on the vets!

I look at these numbers over a long period and in the key demo GH is 2nd. So I just wait and see. Plus it is summer so people are gone for 2-4 wks at any given time.

i agree that GH has been a mess lately. i LOVE the OLTL characters but these new characters aren’t working for me..i actually like that RH brings TODD-LIKE characteristics to Franco and thats NOT because he can’t help himself bc i think that RH is a GREAT actor…i think its because they want him to bring those characteristics to franco, in order to make him more likable. the morgan/michael/kiki….SO BLAH. of course ME is doing a great job as silas but still miss the john mcbain. its all very BLAH..nothing interesting or attention grabbing. what IS interesting is that OLTL got cancelled and that show was amazing and had better rating than GH…i think sonny deff needs more air time and they NEED to bring some life into the show! the OLTL writers need to work some of their old magic and bring GH back to life…im not sure that bringing the 3 characters back as new ones was the best move…i think everyone can agree that if they didn’t have to change characters it would be a lot better to have them on the show…well see how things go i hope GH gets better…

The story line that definitely does not work for me on GH is sonny with olivia and connie. Olivia and Connie are both so annoying and boring. They both need to go and just put Carly back wtih Sonny. We were all hoping that Olivia never made it out of the hospital. I have been enjoying the new story line with Franco. But, Morgan is pretty much just there with no real purpose.

I still feel Carly will somehow be with Franco in the future ..
all is just beginning, a long way to go with these new stories..

I can only speak for GH, because that’s what I watch. I am honestly not sure what’s happened over the last couple of months. The show had been really fun and exciting to watch. And now….it’s just not. There are too many characters, the background music has become cheesy, and yes, it is hard to watch the OLTL actors in new roles on GH. Also, and this is the biggest downside to me, is that I’ve always thought GH had actors who could REALLY act, and some of the people they’ve brought on recently, both newbies and veteran soap actors, just can’t act at the same level. Although I have every episode on DVR, I have not really bothered to watch them the last couple of weeks. Hopefully things will get better soon.

Britt & Nicholas. ‘GH.

was I blown away. Yes indeed…. Britt… is mixing in quite well with GH. when she showed up at the lamaze classes…. with Nicholas… I was beaming. I was giddy for Britt…. watching her enthralled by her own emotions… and feeling new things…. Nicholas…. like she’s seeing things for the first time.

Nicholas is General Hospitals… Kevin Costner…. geez! He doesn’t have to say a thing….how romantic…. how sexy… how charming it is to see a man of his calibur enchanting fans…. and Britt fit right in with him.

I was so impressed with how Britt and Nicholas scenes were shot… they didn’t overplay or out act each other… but.. with minimal dialogue… yet… with each other.. they emoted volumes… with what could be.

I completely forgot the tired triangle of Britt/Patrick/Sabrina…. if GH chooses to see where Britt and Nicholas go…. it’s all good to me.

have to bring up how good Spinelli was, as well…. when, even he…. telling Maxie… “that he didn’t want her to be alone”. because… lulu was sick… and Dante was busy…. but… just shows… how even Spinelli… was telling with his intent without saying as such…

my favorite part of the Georgia and Maxie visit… was when they both brought up “the best dad in the universe”. and that’s Mac.

Silas’ direct approach is making me a believer of Michael Easton… having never watched him on OLTL. I wasn’t impressed with him, the last month I did watch OLTL. course.. at the time.. he and Natalie were happy….

I find that he’ll be a nice fit as the new/top doctor in Port Charles… seeing, that Dr. Patrick needs to grow a pair… and when… we’ll have two hot doctors.

I don’t know about the Kiki’s his daughter thing tho… I don’t want it to disrupt what he already has on the horizon? Sam, Daniel Edward, and Rafe…. and top dog at the hospital… and now… possibly? Kiki… she, to this day.. hasn’t shown her worth.

i’ll wait out the Franco is Jason… for all the telling of Silas and Franco… Ava is great go-between these two guys… and is telling me and GH writers… she’s the new queen. for the life of me… I don’t even know what happened to Carly.

Sonny shedding a tear…. his admitting he loves Connie….. I don’t know… the big part of me.. is how will this hurt Connie… Olivia’s big eyes… boy… can she tear up well… keeping her feelings and setting aside.. her time.

GH… you’d better show a good show for Mac and Felicias marriage.

I believe everyone is having a secret affair with Roger Howarth.

hence… the reason every one is talking about specifically him… and will continue to

If so, at least half of that group are in the process of dumping him.

These ancient day soap operas need to stop w/ rehashed arcs and cliched characters. There needs to be new storylines told w/ racially diverse actors. African american core families don’t get the same priority as white core families. b&b has 2 lesbian partners w/ their 20s daughter. Yet there are still no Asian american patriarchs and matriarchs w/ their sons and daughters as romantic leading characters.

Hey “bc,” if you knew the history of GH, you would acknowledge that waay back in the ’80’s, they had a very active Asian storyline with Yank, Jade, etc…it was quite a cool intriguing mystery, but the best part was that it was a creative effort that grew out of imagination, not just someone bending to today’s constant clamoring by the “pc” brigade. Those of us who enjoy that show want to see great plots and interesting characters…we are NOT obsessed with skincolor and ethnicity, although I have to say that when lip-service seems to be paid to casting such individuals that fit such “specs” they are usually less than successful in advancing the show, i.e., Sabrina, Taylor, Shawn, TJ and yes, Brad, who is a huge creep, even though he ticks two of the minority boxes….What matters is having actors who bring personality and presence to their roles with their talent, and the rest takes care of itself: Think “Epiphany!!!” That woman owns every scene she is in…she is smart, capable and sassy!!! GH would be much the lesser without her…that is what makes a great, memorable soap character!!! I only note this since you repeatedly grouse about this issue, even regarding programs where it would realistically/historically make no sense, like with “Downton Abbey!” There are plenty of primetime shows I can think of that feature Asian actors, and I don’t even watch that much network television anymore: Hawaii Five-O, Mentalist, Elementary, Mistresses L&O, and then some. All I’m saying is that content is far more important than filling a show with the right “faces” to placate certain segments of the population…..that’s it!!!!!

I want to know how number of viewers is determined? Is it possible that the demographic that is being looked at is either on summer vacation and travelling with family or maybe working in a summer job? Numbers could be down from last year because the economy is picking up and people are able to afford travel? Why can’t the ratings tabulators use data from PVRs to determine who is actually watching a show? Maybe people aren’t tuning in during the first air time, but are recording and watching later. Personally, I think GH is awesome right now! The writing is brilliant and the “new” characters are great!! I love how they were worked back into the show with the same characters they have chemistry with. I love Michael and Kiki much better than I ever liked Michael and Starr. I didn’t like Morgan at first but he’s grown on me now. A couple of months ago I almost gave up on GH, now I can’t wait for the next show!!

I blame Sabrina and the God awful actress that portrays her.

THANK YOU!!!!!!! Totally agree…seems to be the prevailing opinion on most discussion boards, too. Just wish we could get a petition going to get rid of that obnoxious character and the annoying, talentless person who plays her!!!!! Keep hoping the delicious “Dr. O.” will bump off that little simp and put us all out of our misery…Did you hear that “Cartini???”

I am a loyal GH fan but it gets harder & harder to keep watching. The show is a big mess. from kissing cousins to bringing Franco back. RH is a great actor so he will make it his own but it just was a stupid move. ELQ by now I don’t care who runs it! AJ & Elizabeth are adults can they do something already! Move the stories a bit faster & give us a clue about Robin & Robert!

Days Of Our Lives

Days of our Lives Legendary Susan Seaforth Hayes Talks on the Horton House Fire Storyline, Mourning the Loss of Husband Bill Hayes & His Near-to-Final Performances

It has been an emotional time for longtime fans of Days of our Lives and beloved veteran, Susan Seaforth Hayes (Julie Williams). On-screen, the iconic Horton home was burned to the ground in what appears to be a storyline-dictated decision that shocked many. In real life, Susan is mourning the loss of her husband and DAYS enduring favorite, Bill Hayes (Doug Williams), who passed away at 98 in January. Over the weekend, during the 2024 SAG Awards In Memoriam tribute, Hayes was remembered along with other motion pictures and television stars whom we lost over the past year.

Since the Peacock streaming soap opera tapes months ahead of air, the Horton home fire and its aftermath are currently playing out in all-new episodes with more on this story featuring Susan to come. Bill Hayes also appeared in several of these episodes making it all the more touching and heartfelt.

When Julie came back to the Horton home to see what remained of it after the fire, Days of our Lives fans were treated to a heart-tugging episode that streamed last Wednesday, February 21st. In it, newly-taped scenes of a young Tom (Zach Chyz) and Alice (Sydney Kathrann Smith) Horton telling the story of how they came to live in the house to raise their children, juxtaposed with Julie and Doug (and members of their family and friends), surveying what’s left of the beloved house, brought many a tear.

Michael Fairman TV talked with Susan Seaforth Hayes for this very candid and heartfelt conversation to get her feelings on the Horton house fire, and being given the opportunity to have a storyline at this point in her storied career. In addition, Susan provides some insight on what it was like for her ailing late husband to tape scenes at DAYS shortly before his death, what the series plans to do about writing off the character of Doug while honoring the legacy of Bill Hayes, and how she knew she had the greatest love affair that anyone could hope for in their lifetime, which in turn, has inspired all of us.

I was shocked when they decided to burn down the Horton house. Were you at first devastated … and did you know that there would be a big story surrounding it?

SUSAN: I did not know how big a story was with it. I knew that many years ago, another regime had planned on trashing the set and getting rid of the set because nobody cared about the Hortons anymore. It was stopped by one person, and I was eternally grateful for that. This time I thought, “Oh, my goodness! I guess I’ll be meeting people for a cup of coffee at the Horton Square. No home, no roots, no reason to be called in,” and thinking that’s the end of Julie. That’s the end of Doug and Julie. Then, when they began to structure a story around it, I think all of this came up during the writer’s strike. So of course, I was curious to see how this was going to turn out. I enjoyed the aftermath, because in the aftermath, and a little bit before the fire, if you saw the show, I get to talk a bit about the history of the household and the people in it.

In the special episode that aired last Wednesday, Julie gave Leo (Greg Rikaart) the family tree history of the Hortons for his story in the Spectactor.

SUSAN:  I’ve had a couple of good long soliloquies about the past. I’m fated to be the character that does that because I’m the one still standing. I must say, I do enjoy doing them. Emotionally, all I have to do is rerun some of the actors and my own family in my mind and the emotion starts to come, you know, the emotion starts to flow.

Julie talks to Maggie (Suzanne Rogers) immediately after the fire. She is upset that the Horton family Christmas ornaments are gone. Fans were not happy that they could possibly have burned up. Thank God! There was a happy ending when they were located and unscathed, or there would have been hell to pay!

SUSAN: I knew that they were in the prop room and that they still existed. But how much they were going to put a story around their loss, I did not know. We don’t get to ponder the plot. We just get to show up and start doing it. I think on this particular matter, something as important as a structure of the original set of the show, there’s been quite a bit of interest. So, I can appreciate that.

Photo: JPI

I was thinking, ‘Did they decide to burn the house down, because they were finally retiring the old Horton home set?’ What was the purpose of it?

SUSAN: They’ve done everything to make quicker set changes, which is remarkable and very efficient right now. The set designer said, “I’ll be interested in your input,” which was nice. The one thing that I loved that had been done, didn’t work. You couldn’t shoot into it. It was a federal mirror over the mantle. I loved it. The size was perfect. I was just delighted. And then, we tried to shoot it, and because of the roundness of the mirror, you got a perfect view of camera one and camera three. So, it came down.

This is Julie’s project to renovate the home. She’s determined to bring back all the memories and redo it?

SUSAN: Absolutely, which is another nice note to play for my character. She’s determined to make the house something that her grandparents would recognize and still feel comfortable in.

Photo: JPI

What did you think of the episode that just aired where the show incorporated flashbacks of a young Tom and Alice Horton?

SUSAN: Well, I set it up. They had their own their own lovely scenes. I read them, and I’m sure the audience was charmed.

What do you remember when you first came to DAYS, and you were in that house, in that set?

SUSAN: What did I notice about the set? I noticed that it was a strange shade of green. (Laughs) It was explained to me that that dull color meant that your face would pop on color TV. I understood that. I loved the little window up the staircase. I’ve always loved that. And at one time, there was a model of the house that sat on the set on its own little pedestal, a little playhouse of the exterior of the house. Whenever the house was on (and remember this is when we were a half-hour and practically live, but not live, because there was no editing), there would also be the sound of a barking dog whenever we reached the Horton house neighborhood. We never saw the dog, but I’m sure his name was “Spot”, and I’m sure he belonged to someone.

PhotoL JPI

You shared so many scenes with Frances Reid (Alice) and MacDonald Carey (Tom) in the Horton living room set and up till they passed. Did they get along well with Bill? Looking back, how was your relationship with them?

SUSAN: They loved him. Well, Mac and Billy had worked together before in theater. Mac was very kind to me at the beginning and helpful. Frances was as well. As Frances got older, she got a bit testy. When someone says, “You’re not going to read the line like that … are you?” It catches your attention. (Laughs). I got peeved at Frances from time to time, but her intent was always to make everything as good as it possibly could be. I saw her come back from her stroke. learn to talk again, learn to do it all again. Not do it easily, but to do it at all was wonderful, and the same with Mac. In his last shows, he was very frail, but we’re actors. We liked being there.

Photo: JPI

During the taping of the episodes surrounding the Horton house fire, Bill was mostly in them with you. How was Bill doing at the time you taped these scenes?

SUSAN: He was okay. He was up for it. He had difficulty moving at that point. So, they restricted his movement a lot. Bill always enjoyed coming to work a lot, and it was extremely difficult for him because he was blind, and didn’t move very well. And now, to do a scene with people who may or may not, have rehearsed with you, who may or may not, give you the exact cue, and when they are attempting to have you look each other in the eye, you can’t see who’s eyes they are, that was the hard part. The easy part was working with him, which was lovely and was a gift. It was a gift from Corday Productions that he was able to work within three weeks of his death, which I thought was super and extraordinary.

Photo: JPI

That is amazing. Did Bill understand everything that was going on at the time of the tapings?

SUSAN: Absolutely. He understood what was going on. He just couldn’t see it or touch it.

The timing couldn’t have been easy for you with Bill’s declining health, and that the show was going to burn down the Horton home where you shared so many scenes and memories.

SUSAN: Well, it hasn’t been my greatest stretch. But I knew that life would be like this. I’ve had five decades of an absolutely wonderful, blessed marriage and a chance to work and a chance to live in my own home and travel, all good. And now, we’re going to have the epilogue. And the epilogue is the hard part, seeing rapid change around you and losing the people that were the center of your life. I’ve just been very fortunate to have cultivated some wonderful friendships, and to have a wonderful large family of Hayeses.

Photo: JPI

You do realize that you and Bill were the gold-standard of what we all should be lucky enough to have in our lives. What an incredible, beautiful, passionate, loving marriage that the two of you had. You don’t see marriages like that anymore. We were all just in awe of the two of you. To us, it was the greatest love affair. You got to have that which is so extraordinary.

SUSAN: I know, and it was all Bill. I mean, any idiot could have been married to Bill Hayes and been deliriously happy. The guy was so perfect in every way that you really would have to pick something and blow it out of proportion to ever complain about any of his traits of character. He was just all good character, goodwill, and good humor. I just followed along and tried to live my life for him, with him, and follow his style, which I hope to carry on. I hope to be as good to people as he was to people, and, not be selfish.

Photo: JPI

I always remembered how the two of you would come to the studio with your suitcases, ready to work no matter what material, large or small, they gave you. You showed up. You just had such great work ethic and you don’t see that as much anymore.

SUSAN: At the moment, it’s hard to find it everywhere. I think it’s probably generational. You cannot get too angry at people that are still holding up their phones in the one rehearsal that we have. I think it’s more convenient to receive your work electronically, but somehow it doesn’t seem quite as real. You don’t have a script in your hand anymore unless you print one up yourself.  Sometimes you haven’t met the person you’re working with. Well, that’s not unusual, but no rehearsal at all, that’s kind of marvelously new.

Photo: JPI

Does Julie lean on anybody for emotional support as she tries to rebuild the Horton home. Who’s there for her?

SUSAN: As far as I can tell, nobody. I’m supposed to be the wise woman, and Marlena (Deidre Hall) is supposed to be the other wise woman. I haven’t had any scenes with Marlena for help. I would think Marlena would be the person I would be going to for grief counseling, for friendship, for all of that. I haven’t seen it in the scripts, yet. I’m still deeply entwined with Chad’s (Billy Flynn) storyline.

How is Billy Flynn to work with?

SUSAN: A pleasure. Billy Flynn has grown a lot as a human being and as an actor since I’ve known him. I’m really enjoying his company and really enjoying doing scenes with him. We rehearse and then we get on other subjects and laugh and talk and inform each other. We’re interested in a lot of the same things. He’s a new parent. He’s really devoting himself to that, to that experience in the best possible way. So, I’m lucky.

Do Julie and Chad try to figure out who set the fire?

SUSAN: Oh yeah.

Photo: JPI

I kept thinking about how Julie got burned in the kitchen fire years ago and her face was scarred, At the time, your mother Elizabeth Harrower was writing DAYS and wrote that for Julie. Did you hate that story?

SUSAN: Well, I know where the story came from. It came up from something in mother’s own life. I knew the people involved, and I wasn’t crazy in love with the idea. Then, when it was supposed to go for six weeks and went on for months and months, I was concerned. Mainly, I was concerned that my face was going to be affected because of the appliance, the scars, that I was wearing. I was told by a dermatologist, “You’re going to have a little beard after this. Ripping your face every single day to get this off is going to be hard on you.” But, I seem to have survived.

Has the show even addressed with you how they plan to handle writing-off the character of Doug Williams, and how they want to honor Bill?

SUSAN: Only in the smallest way. I had a conference call with the producers and our head writer last Friday. I was informed about the immediate, immediate future. I’ve also been promised that they’re going to keep me busy. It’s a cast of over 40 people. I’ll be happy to show up and to be included.

Photo: JPI

I was just hoping that whatever they decide to do with the character of Doug that they were going to run it by you, first.

SUSAN: They have, and they have been very sweet about it.  I’ve got to tell you, this regime, they have a sign up on the wall now, that says, Things we expect on this stage.”  The first one at the top of the list is “kindness.”

Have you watched your work back all these years? I know some actor’s never like to watch the scenes they taped.

SUSAN: I think you learn by watching yourself, if you have an open mind, and if you are not hypercritical, or dismissive. I cannot be dismissive of a character that has given me such a wonderful life. I’m still interested in Julie, perhaps I wouldn’t have been if I’d been on the show for three years and never returned to it. But I’m quite interested in her now, and what she has to offer as a member of this ensemble.

Photo: JPI

Julie’s ties to the whole history of Days of our Lives from this point on are very important. How do you feel about that?

SUSAN:  There are those that don’t care about the history of the show. I know that. I know there are those that only care about continuing with something snappy to keep eyes on the screen through action, adventure, drama, death, kidnapping, missed opportunities, all that, which I suppose that’s what the audience craves. But, that’s not just what the show can do. What the show can do so well is character. There’s a lot of people over 70 who are still on the show now. I’m the oldest one, but I’m not the only one. We’re coming up on the 60th anniversary. I don’t think the show is worn out. And if it is, it’s had a remarkably successful six decades.

Lamon Archey (Eli) is back on DAYS for a stint. What has it been like to work with Lamon as his on-screen grandmother?

SUSAN: I think he’s terrific and visually he is so beautiful, so appealing. I think both Eli and Lani (Sal Stowers) are very appealing as characters. I’m delighted to be connected to Eli as a family member. That was a lucky break for me.

Photo: JPI

Do you think DAYS fans are going to continue to be emotional in the aftermath of this fire and all the story that comes out of it? Do you think we’ll be touched by what Julie goes through to get the remains all cleaned up for a new house?

SUSAN: I think anybody in America who’s gone through a disaster, and have unfortunately had the disruption of their home, will be sympathetic and interested in how it all turns out. It’s a nice note to play. We haven’t had to do that very often. We just go from one lovely apartment to another without much discussion. I think this is the one set that meant a lot to people. I was very sorry to lose “Julie’s Place,” as it turned into kind of a sandwich shop. I still loved having a business, a tangible place to be, and an alternate place for people to meet.

Photo: NBC

Upon reflection, what was your favorite scene with Bill? Was it when Julie and Doug got married on-screen, or was it something else that was much more intimate?

SUSAN: I think our last scene is going to be more important, emotionally. I think the first wedding was beautiful, but the material around the time of our second wedding, when Brenda Benet (ex-Lee) came back on the show and Doug stood up to her and says, “I’m not going to be manipulated anymore,” was also strong. There has been a lot of very important times – when Doug was killed-off by James Reilly, and we met in the tunnel of light. That was a day. That was a difficult day, which I certainly can’t revisit right now emotionally. When Julie found out Doug had run off and married her mother, Addie, that was a day. It was a day because, I went to the producer at the time, Jack Herzberg, and said, “Is this it? Am I not going to work with him anymore?”And he said, “Right! That’s it. You’re not working with Bill Hayes anymore.” We were not married at the time, and I thought I was going to go through the floor! That wasn’t a happy day.

Photo: JPI

In terms of Bill’s final day on the set with you, did you know that it was his last, and what would turn out to be his last scene?

SUSAN: Well, they didn’t know. But I knew. I had been allowed to rewrite it. So, I can’t tell you Bill’s last line now, of course, but I will in time.

What do you think about the sentiments shared by Susan on her late husband, and this storyline? How do hope the show properly honors Bill and Doug Williams when the series writes-off the character? Are you enjoying the Horton house fire story arc or does it upset you too much? Share your thoughts via the comment section below.
