REPORT: Y&R’s Josh Griffith Pink Slips Entire Breakdown Writing Staff
There are major changes afoot at The Young and the Restless in their writing department due to budget cuts and possibly the upcoming WGA negotiations.
According to a report from Joseph Kapsch for The Wrap, Josh Griffith, the current executive producer and head writer at the CBS daytime drama, axed his entire breakdown writing team. One of their sources notes that all the breakdown writers were let go and Griffith will take on those duties as well in a cost-cutting move.

As daytime fans have come to understand, the breakdown writers responsibility is to map out the storylines/scenes in each episode.
The item also confirms that four of the five writers let go were women. One of whom was African-American, who was brought on to add diversity behind the scenes, per CBS.
One of the talented scribes losing her job was Sara Bibel, who took to Twitter confirming the news, sharing: “I was one of the writers who lost their jobs. I will always be proud and grateful for the 6 years I spent at #YR. During my tenure, I wore almost every hat: scriptwriter, co-headwriter the year we ran the tables at the Daytime Emmys (2018-19), script editor & outlines.”

The report went on to say that another insider, expressed: “There was some restructuring of the writers staff to streamline the creative process.”
Y&R is set to celebrate its 50th anniversary next month on March 26th.
So, what do you think about the breakdown writers being axed at Y&R? Comment below.
Can’t wait until this ass is out the door!!
Didn’t take him very long to fire people behind the scenes. What’s next, cast members he doesn’t personally like?
He already started that with Jordi Vilasuso, and demoting Rory Gibson & Kelsey Wang to recurring status.
I 100% agree. It’s almost like he is trying to make the show sink. These anniversary story lines had better be good as I have been waiting all year for this. So glad that Michael is back & now they have to bring back Doug. He says he’s not coming back and I don’t blame him but at least have a Skype phone call with him. And if they kill him off, I will never watch again! I’m sure all fans are in agreement with that!
Hmmm, perhaps the storylines will improve now. One can only hope. I’ve been watching since the beginning and the last few years have been horrible.
Cannot blame the breakdown writers for the stories, when they’re acted in the command of Josh Griffith, who is their replacement. If you want better… you want Griffith OUT!
I can’t agree with you more. Especially the past year. I’m in my 50’s and started watch in my teens. I am so close to tuning out. So repetitive with stories, couples with no chemistry, one with chemistry that are ripped apart, no one can ever be happy for more than a month or two (I get it’s a soap, not everybody needs to break up to sleep with siblings of best friends the next week), other crisis’s can happen other than break ups. enough all ready. Boring characters nobody likes just because they work for peanuts. This is how you lose views. No views, no show. Josh Griffith and his writers need to read these blogs and learn what the views want. Not what they think we ant or what they want.
Me too, Jen. I’ve been watching since 1974 and have never been this disinterested in so many characters at once. Diane is my main complaint (can’t STAND her). Kyle is really cute but has become intolerable, ditto Summer. Michael, though rarely on, is a turncoat, as are Daniel, Nate, Nick, Devon, Lily… oy vey! I still like Sharon, Nikki (mostly), Phyllis, Chance without Abby, Adam, and Victor. Where’s Chloe, adorable Kevin, earth mother Traci, colorful Gloria? Even Lauren is relegated to cameos. Sad state of affairs, often literally. I mean, why is Nick still considered a “stand-up” dude when he betrays his brother, father, even his sister with no sign of a conscience? Truly disturbing.
One imagination is going to be better than five? Don’t think so.
Fire Josh Griffith with or without budget cuts. He’s the one who should ve been sacked. How can you break down nothing?! Griffith doesn’t write at all. A soap about nothing now
Does that mean the Soap is cancelled next? I can’t seem to find it on reg channels.
Any find it in regular channels?? It’s on CBS.
this is just crazy what’s going on at restless some episodes are very boring and pic of trevor st. john above sorry not his fault but his tucker mccall is a miss it’s as if they are trying to figure him out episode by episode i’ve said a show can’t live on 6 characters outside of nick sharon phyliss sally adam and the little seen ashley and tracy who add something we get a dumbed down jack the anticipated return of kyle has him whining every day where is chance where is noah abby and devon are a bore nate could be interesting sadly this isn’t the fault of break down writers sad to see anyone lose there job it’s been heading in a bad direction for months one can only hope to see a turnaround unfortunately with this news i don’t see it
You’re right, Richard—it’s one boring family feud after another. And, this was my favorite soap, once upon a time. Nothing makes any sense. Jack is made to look like an adolescent fool panting after a well-known manipulative witch— I mean: holy moly, writers—-wake him up!! He’s pushing seventy—and so naive?
Then, there’s Nate—- from doctor to business man —and he’s a sl¥t, to boot—-Then along comes Victoria. What is happening to her?
How desperate is she? The writing needs to be polished lickety-split.
Celia…You forgot to add Phyllis. If I remember right she used to be one of your fav characters. But right now she’s digging her black hole deeper. Sounds like she’s always been this way, but right now she’s way over the top.
LOL–Rose, Stafford is still one of my favorites—not necessarily the character. I think Michelle is amazing.
And, yes—sadly Phyllis is digging her own hole. However, she doesn’t realize her kids are grown —They will ask for her advice and/or help when needed. There are a few women like that in my family.LOL.
I don’t know why the writers are going down this path? Are they purposely throwing Phyllis under the bus to make Diane look good?
Y&R is a mess—-Victoria is acting out of character, as well. In all these years she’s never shown the femme fatale side of herself—I guess because it’s not in her nature–looks foolish and so not in sync….
I am, however, liking the banter between Ashley and Tucker—a pretty entertaining prelude to “foreplay”— this will be a great couple–can’t wait.
Something else? For the first time EVER? I feel for Adam while Nick is getting on my nerves, along with Sally. I getbthat it’s her first pregnancy, but gee—she’s not twelve–there are books!! That’s another thumbs-down for the writers. They make her look like a simpleton—She; a prodigious business woman?
Celia…actually Michele is doing a great acting job with Phyllis. But she is driving me crazy with her denials about the seeing the effect she has on others. Love Ashley and Tucker slow re-romance. I wasn’t watching during the first. And I even hope Devon accepts his offer. I’m on Devon’s side vs Lilly. Not into the Daniel story. As for Sally and her pregnancy, I think it has pushed a lot of buttons in her background that are making her not the decisive business woman she usually is. What I’m more disturbed about as unprotected sex from three adult characters. And never a mention of it from those who know what’s happening. Bad non-message. Yes, Victoria stalking Matt seems out of character. And wait until she finds out what daddy has offered Adam. :)))
I know, Rose—Phyllis lives in her own head—her “quiet” rage taking over her thinking and behavior. I don’t know how I would behave if an old malignancy, such as Diane, returned to disrupt my life all over again—deja vu.
I love Ashley—and, I don’t blame her for being wary of both Tucker ( he cheated on her while they were married) and Jack’s halfwit behavior. I guess it must be true that men do not think with their head? LOL…Sorry, guys!!! Kidding!!–It’s the writers’ fault for portraying some of the character’s irrational behavior; to put it mildly.
Oh, man—do I ever agree with you. Sally is an adult who’s been around, I presume. She was/is sexually active ( at one point with two brothers at the same time)—no birth control? Duh?!?! What about the men? Acting like irresponsible, little boys who don’t think and throw caution to the wind.
Celia dear, I know, I know. Nick won’t even let Sally have an upset tummy without overreacting. I don’t recall his being as solicitous to Sharon, Sage, or Phyllis during their pregnancies. It’s like that idiot Jack on the dreadful show VIRGIN RIVER — his baby mama is a licensed nurse and midwife and he’s doling out illiterate, ridiculous advice to HER. So insulting to women! Phyllis? Michelle is as spellbinding as ever but the character has become as dense as concrete. I’m bored with Victoria; Nate; Kyle (still hot as blazes, though); Daniel; Billy; Lily; Abby; Jack’s trademark grimaces (now averaging 2 per episode); and I don’t like the new, wimpy version of Tucker — he’s too sexy to be so emasculated so quickly. And the supreme horror is Diane – the real blight on the show and humanity in general. There’s a Bible verse- “Evil always seems to prosper.” Well, it’s more than seems for Dodo Diane — I wish she were extinct as well!
Oh, yeah, Soaphound— these characters are getting more moronic by the second. Nick is missing a halo—Whoa!! What man is that understanding? And, Adam? He still wants la-la-head-Sally, as well? What the_____?!?!?!?!?!
And the beat goes on…and on….and on…
More deja-vu—-we’ve visited this plot with Sage, right? What’s up with that? I forgot why Nick ended up with Christian; Adam’s son??
I see your analogy—- the two Jacks do share a few similarities —the begging—Oh, please—-First rule of Love ( tee-hee) —Do Not Beg!!
Also, Mel was not a strega——at least, I don’t think so?
Yeah—Jack Abbot is so smart, so intuitive, he gives gratis advice which he himself cannot follow—-I would think that by this age he would have learned a few life lessons?
Surprise, Surprise—-I am into Stark ( or is it Spark?)—Ha!! But, I want mild revenge—-nothing criminal—just roguish!! I look forward to a Stark-Phyllis alliance. Possibly a romantic liaison? Maybe this is what she needs to break the concrete? LOL
Let’s not even go there with Victoria and all the rest—Nate irks me the most.
Oh—-the grimaces? That thing Jack does with his lips. Oh, Yuck— It’s not attractive—I think I mentioned this before.
I am very confused about Diane —-is she being sincere or does she represent the Bible quote you mention?—evil is evil is evil.
Then there’s Tucker, the Frat-boy who can’t grow up. Well, I guess he’s acting like one to win Ashley over? Too mealy-mouthed. But, I like him. Did you notice he wears a rug?
OMG—-now that you mention the Dodo, Diane reminds me of a bird when she moves her head hither and yon.
Look at it this way, Soaphound—-sooner than later her true colors will re-emerge.
There’s an Italian saying ( which I think I’ve repeated here) —il lupo cambia il pelo e non il vizio”.
It’s impossible to translate literally, but here it is—-the wolf changes( sheds) its fur and not its habit.
Ciao, bella.
I just agree about Trevor St John
Ellen…Trevor is the main reason I watch. Love the character, and his story is perking up let’s hope.
rose,
I like Trevor too but they stuck him with Ashley who I’ve always liked up until now. Her reasoning might be sound but her stuck-up, arrogant behavior is very unbecomming and unlike her as is her treatment of Jack who’s acting like a dumb ninny, the old fart! I am beginning to think he really deserves Diane.
Violet…I don’t know Ashley from the past. But her current attitude is really good to have when summoned by Victor with Victoria present. She sure held her ground. And I think she is holding as a shield to protect her heart when talking with Tucker because down deep she can still care for him. :)))
rose,
She is certainly a shrewed business woman. I’m just used to seeing a softer side which puts me off some. She’s so good as an actor, that’s why she an play that horrible Kristen on DAYS.
Violet…I’ve never watched Days. But I have seen actor Ashley on ads for this show. But from the comments about Days I’ve read I’m not sure I want to invest my time in a really wacky soap. Another thing…in my market I would have to make a choice between Days and Y&R. They both are on at the same time. I pick Y&R. I may not be the only one so NBC Peacock should consider this if looking for or maintain viewers.
Violet…Correction…should consider looking for “new” or maintain viewers. I really do proof read my emails from MF as well as all others. But still typos and even new words can appear after I click send. I am blaming it on AI and the world tech wants to unknowing put into our computers language. Now that’s scary! :)))
rose,
I have the same darn problem with typos and I blame it on my keyboard. It wants one word whereas I want another. What to do? Let me know if you figure it out.
I don’t watch Days any longer, since they switched to Peacock. They’ve gotten crazy and I don’t have the patience with all that “dead or alive” stuff. Oh, I do agree that Ashley still has feelings for Tucker, kind of like she’s trying to save him from himself.
You know, Violet, in theory I should like this plot twist more than I do. Love Tucker and Ashley but this just isn’t clicking yet; I expected it to be more fun. Of course, Victoria’s endless greed, dangerous ambition, and pathological treatment of Adam aren’t helping. I still worry about her getting her avaricious paws on Tucker’s company. That will be a real drag!
Soaphound,
What do you think of Diane turning down Jack’s proposal, real or phony? She seems sincere.
Violet, I do think she’s genuinely frightened of Jeremy and she probably does care for Jack on some level. But at this point, I just don’t care. I still see the glee she takes over defeating Phyllis and getting Kyle to defy Summer. That’s why I don’t trust her. I don’t want her dead…just to get her just desserts. Phyllis will be digging her own grave but she’s been resurrected before. Here’s hoping!
Sometimes when things become stale, it’s time to take a step and just revamp. It’s not always a pleasant stand to take.
I think someone should pink slip Josh. Im sorry … He is not the right person for this show! If all of this panic is supposedly setting in just weeks before the 50th Anniversary, what can we really expect??
Hoping the storylines will improve….if they need to make budget cuts get rid of all the old actors they keep bringing back from the long, long ago ….Diane. Tucker, Heather, Daniel, Lucy.
And stop with couples that have zero chemistry-Abby and Dęvon, Nate and Victoria….Diane and Jack.
Enough already.
I couldn’t agree more!
I’ve watched Y&R from the beginning. I’m an author and would love to have the chance to be on the writing team bringing fresh storylines.
What do you think we’re going to say? Misogyny. What else? And the soap story lines are lowering in quality. The art always tells on you, and the fact that white males are taking over all the soaps is being expressed in terrible story lines racism, misogyny, and the sinking of soaps off of Network television. It already happened to Days of our lives. Now you’re trying to do it to The Young and the restless. New things were happening when the women were headwriting, including a beautiful interracial couple, of Abby and Devon. Now they hardly got any screen time during sweeps week, now that a white male head writer’s taking over.
A beautiful interracial couple? They’re both cheaters. A despicable pairing of selfishness. But they do belong together.
They weren’t headwriting–they were the outline writers. Josh was, and still is, headwriter. (Not that that is necessarily a good thing.)
YR isn’t the first show to do this; other shows in the past have gotten rid of the position of breakdown writer, to cut costs. (But when a show starts cutting costs in this way, it’s usually not a good sign regarding the show’s overall financial health–and hence its future.)
Years and years ago, when I started watching soaps, there weren’t any breakdown writers–just a headwriter, four or five script writers, and sometimes an assistant head writer.
I do feel bad that one of the people cut was the lone (I think) person of color on the writing staff. They should have found a way to keep her on in another capacity; YR has been criticized in the past (justly, in my opinion) for the lack of diversity on its writing staff.
Dude, you dont know what the hell you are talking about! I dont think you even watch Daytime? Y&R has many black actors. Devon COULD be a front burner character but the actor is horrible and his stories suck! Nate, who is a very good actor was pulled out of the hospital and put in a boardroom so they could utilize his talents BUT his story sucks! On GH they have a ton of black actors on there who are featured and most are very talented! Quit trying to stir the pot on this site! Go chat on CNN or FOX!
Vic
Are you serious? Beautiful interracial couple? You got the interracial right but come on, they are so boring together, despite the sexy , naked scenes. These days they act like friends only.
They need to pink slip him! The show is unwatchable.
Never really watched Y&R over the years. But falling ratings and budget cuts are NOT a good sign. Josh Griffith may get the next pink slip if things don’t improve. Awful way for CBS to start a 50th Anniversary celebration!
I feel another Victor & Sharon love affair coming soon! You know when Victor gifts a multi million dollar diamond Tiara to Nicki he’s getting restless!
You do recall that Sharon and Victor were already married, right? I doubt they’ll go down that road again.
Yeah, that was one storyline that the fans absolutely HATED!!! I too doubt they’ll go down that road again.
Oh yes I do, there was never any confirmation that they actually had sex though, it was all a bit creepy!
Stop it no way that awful storyline was created by MB and she had a vendetta against Case and Braeden has blamed Case because she did not go for it she knew it was stupid! He has done everything he could to get case fired can’t stand him awful person!
Steven and Harry
Hey, he could always adopt her and bring her to the ranch and she could pass around the coffee and advice. I don’t think my scenario is any crazier than any other.
Oh, please!! Perish the thought!! Victor can barely raise his pinky….
I’ve noticed that Braeden mostly sits through his scenes.
This show has been making a few bad turns~~ Over the last few years it has become soooo gross—-brothers sharing the same women, including fathers-in-law. Picturing Victor doing it with anyone is not something the viewer wants to see, believe me—-especially, we women.
Eric Braedon had a hip replacement a few months, which would explain all the sitting!
Thanks, Steven Ryan–poor guy. Thankfully, he’s well enough to work. Good for him.
I like the actor and after years of not being a fan of Victor, I can finally appreciate the character now—the show would not be the same without him. I’ve been watching since I was eleven or twelve–I’m now in my mid 30’s–so, I get Victor after all these years).
But, the chatter of a liaison ( again) between him and Sharon ( or anyone else) is too ridiculous to even contemplate. I’m not a man, but……at that age Viagra would kill him. What a way to go……Sorry–couldn’t help myself…
Love Eric Braedon. The show wouldn’t be the same without him.
I feel like they next step is to ax the entire show. The storylines have sucked for a long time now. Maybe they should have replaced him. He apparently doesn’t know how to hire good writers or write any himself.
I always thought the Young and the Restless would be the last daytime soap standing on regular television. Now i am not so sure. This photograph reminds me of those company photos the movie studios ran in the 1950s before the studio system collapsed. With streaming out there i wouldnt be surprised to see another announcement soon that Y&R is heading to Paramount Plus.
This is surprising news. And sad. One would think with so few daytime dramas in production, the best and brightest storytellers would be in charge. I am not so sure. I miss action, romance, heart, family, suspense, group scenes, and major events. Surely, so eone can cohesively marry budget to talents and deliver.
It’s about time, we longtime fans have been begging for new writers as the show was and has been taking a deep dive in our minds. The storylines have destroyed the very heart of Y&R. I’ve been watching from day one if that tells you anything and myself along with other longtime fans have been truly disappointed the last few years and more of the direction the shows been taking. Hopefully this change will bring back the wonderful show and characters once again. Starting with bringing Paul back!
Keep Devon and Amanda together when she returns in March. Fire Nate,Elena. Bring back Hunter King.
What’s with Elena? She’s been looking pretty bad lately, kind of downbeat, lack of make-up. I don’t mean to be unkind, just wondered if it was part of her character or what?
Um. NEVER to that last one.
lol.
This article states they brought in an African American writer to add diversity. She failed miserably. Always we have lost wonderful Black actors who are handed a small, unimportant role. They always end of working “for” someone rather than running a strong corporation like Neal started to do or Nate and Devon cheat on wonderful women with Abby and Victoria. I believe it is time to have s powerful Black businessman enter the GC power structure with his corporate executives who can shake up the current boring same old group. They have made Devon look petty by his fighting with his own family. They are setting Nate up to be embarrassed by making business mistakes. Get rid if new storylines involving Noah, Daniel etc and spend money on REAL talent and new situation.
will Y&R be the first daytime soap to be written by chatGPT ?
It’s about time, the story lines are dragged out and boring, too much talking over the same things every day.
I have to laugh, because when Josh Griffith & Anthony Morina were hired, every hailed them as the “saviors” for this soap and, I laugh, because I told everyone to watch out because they were going to sink this soap, and it looks like I was entirely RIGHT!
The role of executive producer & head writer should never be held by the same person⏤especially in today’s world⏤and now, not only is Griffith both of the roles, but he also just took the place of not one, but FIVE breakdown writers. And they’re all female, too?! What kind of male power trip is happening?
It is time for Griffith to go. To think, Mal Young approached them to step back in as executive producer, and, in response, they fired Morina and gave Griffith complete control of this soap, which now uses two permanent community lots, and maybe one or two other housing sets, because they fired the overnight set crew.
I do not see this soap continuing beyond its 2024 renewal. I genuinely do not.
i feel the last time this show was exciting was with mal young but unfortunately the fans couldn’t handle the demise of JT storyline i felt it was realistic with victor being his father in law and the fact he couldn’t impress him if he owned amazon and the bonding of nikki sharon victoria and phyllis was stellar
The last time this soap was exciting WAS with Mal Young. He had rich production value and while his writing was controversial, it was never a slow-moving, must-miss mess. And he did not fire entire blocks of the writing team.
In knowing what it takes to make a soap, especially one as good as Y&R used to be, i’m shocked CBS allowed this cost cutting measure. Griffith is basically becoming what Tyler Perry is to his own productions. Josh Griffith now has to storyline, write (?)and edit a full year of story and scripts all on his own while overseeing the entire production. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if the directors don’t go next. A disaster in the making.
If what you are saying is true Josh Griffith may just be a caretaker. They are clearing the decks and budget of the show for a reason. Hopefully to fund a new creative team to raise the ratings and not to transition it off the network.
No. If anything, Griffith will be here until the soap ends… likely next year.
I miss Mal Young. If you go back to the first episode he did, you can see that he upped the pace to be more like UK soaps and he made the lighting way better so it didn’t look like everything was lit the same. Everybody complained about it at the time, and I thought they don’t know what they’re wishing for. Then sure enough, 1 year later they got the Griffith trainwreck. Can’t wait until CBS and Sony wise up and dump him.
I am glad. Too much business talk about takeovers. Who cares,,,
Exactly! Who wants to work in the business world and then come home to watch a show about the business world?
I think the writing sucks. Don’t want to see Nick and Sharon or Nick and Phyllis. Dumb Jack. Definitely need change he gotta go!
This show is unrecognizable and should be put out of it’s misery
Love your name!
Thank you. (I’m talking with my hands with tons of rings on and long nails pointing at you)
What on God’s Green Earth are you doing? I sure miss Mrs.C, she was one in a million!
I’m having a bottle of vodka smoking a few cigarettes and having jill do my nails
I am someone who has to say I preferred Mal Youngs YR to Griffith. At least everyday something was going on and the show was entertaining. Why don’t they fire Michelle Stsfford if they want to cut costs? She has been a total bust of a return and doesn’t bring in any ratings to the show.
No clue what is going on at CBS but it feels like they’re actively trying to get Y&R cancelled. Giving one person complete creative control over a show, especially when it’s been as stale and boring as Y&R has been over the last two or three years, is a terrible idea. Never thought I’d say this but I miss the days of Maria Arena Bell… it seems like the last time the show had any stability was over a decade ago.
This show has writers? It’s been the same 5 scenes, just with different people, for the past 32 years.
Can he go over to GH and do the same thing with the cast now?
The only person who should get a pink slip is Griffith. WAKE UP CBS!
You are 100 percent right.
Sack Griffth he should have been let go along time ago, WAKE UP CBS what are you waiting on ? The fans have spoken, listen to us! Bring back Gina T we need fire on Y&R and boy she has it. WAKE UP CBS LISTEN TO YOUR FANS !
SACK GRIFFTH
The show has been bad for almost 20 years. It has been a parade of one bad producer/head writer after another after another. I think the corporate executives had multiple efforts to fix things but it never worked. The show just progressively worse over the past decade.
Ever production resumed after the “pandemic break,” the show visually has looked “small” and cheap. Fewer sets — the overuse of the same hotel rooms, a restaurant and a coffee shop for events that have NO business being conducted there — Long term residents with long stays at hotels?? Purportedly billionaires conducting high-powered negotiations next to a double bed or in a booth??
It seems like the show is even getting financially tighter — It will have ONE man as producer and writer with no assistance? Jeez, he couldn’t put together a compelling plot with the help of a staff. Does anyone think he really can do this on his own??
The most troubling thing is that the current headwriter has done a bad job and NOTHING is being done. In the past, the corporate executives did make an effort and change those in charge. Now, it seems like everyone is just resigned to the show being in poor shape. No one is even bothering to try.
Y&R will be off the air in two years. It is inexcusable how far those once decent show has fallen. I feel like I am rewatching what happened to ATWT — I hated to see it cancelled as I had followed it for decades. However, I HATED what it had become even more, the mistakes/missed opportunities. While I mourned ATWT, I felt some sense of relief that I didn’t have to endure more of the swill it had become. I’m reaching the same opinion about Y&R.
I don’t think Y and R wanted this news out until after the anniversary show. Once the anniversary show happens, I think we will see some cast cutting. I have NO proof but this looks to be quite a signal more sadness is ahead.
Unfortunate thing here is 5 people lost their jobs and 1 of them handled the African American stories and their continuity. Not a good look from JG or Sony.
I trust Mr Fairmans reporting here but NOT Y and Rs business practices.
No matter what writing team you have, people will want someone else. BUT, this tenure is by far the worst! The “Stories” are horrendous! I really only watch the Victor scenes but his stuff is the same stuff he has done for years, manipulating his children and hating Jack Abbott! And Jack, him and Dianne together is puke in the mouth! Sally is a waste of air, Chole is wasted and there is no Kevin! I have enjoyed Daniel and Heather. Him and Lucy’s heart to heart was the highlight of the year, so far. Abby is being wasted. Chance, the character is just not good. Billy’s podcasting story should have gotten everyone fired immediately! But, this news of Josh firing his breakdown crew is Just something to make it look like the network is actually doing something about this sinking ship! Dont be fooled!
Personally l don’t like the direction that Nate Hastings character is taking. He began as a well respected surgeon with integrity. Now he’s become a manipulative and scheming power seeker. His relationship with Elena separated she and Devon. Elena turned down a promising position to stay in the relationship. And he’s cheating on her. Please bring back the old Nate!
PJ,
I have a better idea, just get rid of him. They can always find someone for Victoria to sexually harrass.
Maybe Josh Griffith needs to be let go.
I think it was cruel firing women and making a comment about a black woman and diversity. I pretty much have mapped out what will happen next with them. Stupidest move ever! You had better not disappoint us on the 50th anniversary of the show unless episodes were already filmed. If that’s the case, don’t chop them out and bring back Doug Davidson! And do not ruin Danny’s storyline. We need him on just as much as Doug! Don’t know or don’t care what happened in the past. Bring Doug back on as well. And take another celebratory picture of the entire cast including Doug. (And Michael)
Katie,
Sorry about Paul but they keep mentioning funeral, so it doesn’t look good for him and they would have showed him visiting with his daughter.
Josh Griffith must GO. What is it going to take? The show is the equivalent of watching paint dry…most of the time.
And, he’s the executive producer and sole writer? At this point, I’d take any headwriter over his nonsensical drivel.
The show needs a fresh vision / take on the characters & storylines. Griffith isn’t up to the task. Obviously.
This isn’t solely Josh, Sony had something do with this also so don’t be fooled. Josh is taking the heat understandably but something is going on behind the scenes. It started with AM. That could be partly to the lawsuit filed but also Sony\CBS was liking his vision. I think we will see more coming and my question how much is CBS involved? Come on CBS still has power behind the scenes it’s on their network. I just don’t think YR will go totally in with no breakdown writers, maybe some new ones down road? Sara B. been there for 6 years and I’m not upset about her leaving the show. Hell, she wrote for Mal and other pass writers and I wasn’t impressed, it was mess under him. I’m not saying YR doesn’t major problems right now but rumor control is off the scale on these sights about YR. Haters are loving this and predicting the cancellation of YR in 2024. I just don’t see that coming they are still pulling in 3 million viewers maybe a possibility moving YR to Paramount+ could happen. I will just have to pay for subscription if or when that should happen with Paramount+. You know Sony has always had their own set of writers & EP. There is a lot unemployed writers from the P&G soaps and maybe it’s time to poach them and hire.
They may have had to fire all those writers to have enough money for civil lawsuits against them for all the molesting that occurred backstage. Y&R as well as CBS studios has a long history of sexual assaults.
Agreed. CBS/Sony have been diligently marking the reception of Days on Peacock and are fully aware that Paramount+ is a more than viable option for both of it’s remaining soaps. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Y&R and B&B moved there within 5 years. If not sooner. I also believe they’ll be closely watching the reboot of Australia’s Neighbours on Freevee for the U.S. market on Amazon Prime and it’s standalone streaming app. The success of that may lead to both soaps moving while rebooting an older CBS soap like ATWT on Paramount+. That’s my take on this. One thing is for sure. Unless Y&R is scaled back to 30 minute; like all remaining soaps should be; Josh Griffith cannot maintain a do it all pace for an extended period. He’ll crash and burn. End of..
Yes, if the soap Neighbors is successful on Freevee possible ATWT or GL could also show up on Pluto. P&G could plug their products in ads during the soap. I agree about soaps should go back to 30 minutes, I had suggested this on another site.
I want to know why Sony Pictures and CBS haven’t commented on any of this
Why would they? They do not care.
I certainly hope he didn’t make a huge mistake. In other words head writer is going to do it all by himself? Good luck.
Sorry to hear of the job losses, but the story lines suck. Some characters are just taking up screen space like seat fillers and I am guilty of fast forwarding past them. Nothing is exciting or makes any sense. Why haven’t we seen Chloe, Tristan or Lillie’s twins in years? Chelsea, has played out as well as others who once stirred things up are now mere screen fillers.
It’s time to bring these young people into the fold to stir things up in Genoa City. And honestly, it just doesn’t make sense that Phyllis is unraveling and self destructing because of Diane. Oh right there are no more men left for her to slither to? Just let her and Jeremy plot a great life together? One would hope that Diane is not killed in whatever scheme Jeremy and Phyllis are plotting.
The plot twist should be either the unforeseen to Jack, Kyle, Summer, Daniel or anyone other than Diane. And Phyllis goes totally insane. But wait! yarns and stretches, have we seen that already? Dear Sir, with the heavy hand I am available when you’re ready to give some viewers with a POV a chance to write something that would hold our attention! No fancy words needed, just plausible excitement. For now I will at least continue to watch to see some of the ladies fits for the day. Until the next time, this is the old and useless wanna be again fan signing off.
I suppose I should “yawn”, though I could stretch my yarn . LOL
Seems to me that he thinks we will watch even more if we are soooooo frustrated with these rediculous situations, with pathetic hope that our wishes will eventually be fulfilled and Diane’s ugly side will be exposed! Instead we get bizaarworld, Diane “is” Jim Jones and Jack didn’t drink the Kool Ade, he has “become” the Kool Ade! Action: Jack, Klye & Summer barge into a room to see Phyllis on her back and Diane is choking her & cursing her to die! Scene 2: Same “head up your ass squad”, decides Phyllis is the bad guy here. Sorry Mr. Whoever you are, I’m not impressed with your drug influenced writing! Think you forgot the primary rules of writing, you don’t take a favorite character – who we have watched for years fall down & get back up and learn and grow. Instead you have turn her into a blithering fool. This doesn’t work, save for some kind of illness or injury! Stafford is not a character we will ever enjoy hating or just snickering at! We love her and want to see her as the person who “fits” the evolution of her character! After all, look at Sharon – she has become Yoda! Hey man, this isn’t frustrating, it’s stupid.
Getting rid of Phyllis is a BIG mistake!
At least she made the story interest-
ing. Yet, some of the other’s, all they
do is have sex. Nick & Sally, Devon & Abby…who cares?? Stark is one of the
worst actors on the show! Keep going this way and the show is going to lose
a lot of fans.
I know there was a problem with the story line I’m a 85 years male been watching. Back to 1985 so I know bad writing and story lines I hope it gets batter

Hayden Panettiere Remembered: ‘Guiding Light’ and More Stars Mourn Her Loss in Wake of Tragic Death

Tributes continue to pour in from the entertainment and soap opera community, and especially from former co-stars of Hayden Panettiere, who died on Sunday at the age of 36.
Panetierre was best-known to soap fans for her roles as as a young Lizzie Spaulding on Guiding Light and Sarah Roberts on One Life to Live, and as an adult in ABC’s music city primetime soap opera, Nashville where she starred as Juliette Barnes opposite General Hospital alum, Jonathan Jackson (ex-Lucky, GH and ex-Avery, Nashville).
As previously reported, Panettiere died on Sunday afternoon, August 16 in a home in Greenville, South Carolina. The coroner released an official statement on Monday, which read in part “no signs of trauma were discovered that would have contributed to the death. The cause and manner of death remain pending further investigation and the completion of additional studies.” First responders rushed to the scene after a 911 call about a woman who was unresponsive from an overdose and in cardiac arrest.

Now below, check out some of the heartfelt remembrances for the extraordinarily talented, Hayden Panettiere from several of her Guiding Light co-stars and more. Michael Fairman TV will continue to add to the list of tributes throughout the next few days as they become available, as well as keep you updated on any further developments in Panettiere’s death.
Beth Chamberlin (Beth Raines, GL): “Hayden played my daughter for 3 years. She was the most brilliant child actor I’ve ever seen. The things she could do, the way she could remember 20+ pages of dialogue, day after day. Even on days where the director would come out between dress and tape and make huge cuts to the scenes, Hayden, never once forgot a line or missed her blocking. The adults would, but not Hayden. I felt blessed to work with her. And always perfect in her playing of the scene.”
Connie Britton (Rayna James, Nashville): “This was Hayden. Bursting with brilliance, shining so bright. I have no words for this sad song. Just heartbreak.
I love you girl. Sleep easy now. 💔”
Tina Sloan (Lillian Raines, GL): “Hayden Panettiere was my granddaughter on Guiding Light. She died at 36 and was such a star.”
Rebecca Budig (ex-Michelle Bauer, GL, now Taylor, B&B): “I remember working alongside her..loved her and her family. She and Beth were spectacular together. So sad for her family and those who knew and loved her.”
Karla Mosley: (Dani Dupree, BTG) “This is awful awful news. Blessings to her soul and all who loved her.”

Bethany Joy Lenz: (ex-Michelle Bauer, GL) “There is nothing that posting pictures on the internet can do. I avoid it usually in moments like this. But Im here with my head in my hands and I don’t know what else to do in aside from praying for her soul, which I have done and will continue. I’m crushed. I knew the wild little blonde. Was she nine? Ten? I was eighteen. She ran through the Screen Gem studio hallways at 222 E44th St. laughing and playing games in between Guiding Light blocking and camera rehearsals. Long, unruly curls trailing behind her. She knew her lines and everyone else’s. Her intelligence was astonishing. She understood scenes and nuance and human struggle like no child I’d ever seen on camera. And she’d sit with you for a great conversation, then giggle and go play. We’d connect on and off over the years, like the cousin in the family reunion who got famous and life moved her away—but I always felt such joy seeing her when we were lucky enough to cross paths. We’d make a pact to talk soon. Lunch. Dinner. Somewhere we could curl up into a corner—but we never quite made it happen. I mostly stayed up to date through mutual friends.”
Lenz continued, “I don’t understand how this is real. Everything seemed to be turning around. She was coming BACK to life, wasn’t she? It’s too young and there’s still so much more life. And her daughter…. Hayden, you are surround by love. I’m sorry for every moment I didn’t reach out or check in. This can’t be real. These are moments of how I knew you, in glimpses over 26 years. I don’t know how to process this. I am praying for you to know the peace of God now and always.”
Brittany Snow: (ex-Daisy Lemay, GL) “I was lucky enough to play your sister for 3 years. I related to you so much in so many ways. Ways that I never even told you. Your talent was remarkable & so was your determination to be a bold, bright shining light. And you were. Always supportive, curious, funny and brave. You will always be remembered undoubtedly for your undeniable strength and spirit 💔.”

Charles Esten (ex-Deacon Clayborne, Nashville): Patty (Esten’s wife) and I are stunned and saddened at the loss of our dear and beautiful friend Hayden. I will never forget the first time I met her. In a sound stage office in Hollywood, I was finishing up my very first NASHVILLE audition. I had read two Deacon scenes before pulling out my guitar and singing two songs. I said my goodbyes and, hoping I’d done well, went to open the door to leave. Instead of swinging all the way out, the door bumped into somebody. Kinda hard.”
“To my complete surprise, It was Hayden Paniettiere, who – in full Juliette Barnes mode – had been listening with her ear to the door. Instead of looking even a little bit caught, her face instantly bloomed into the most beautiful smile. Eyes twinkling, she clapped her hands and said, “That was so good!!” I can promise you that in that moment, there was nothing in the world I needed to hear more than that. I told her that, along with my HEROES-watching family, I was already a big fan of hers, and that I was grateful for the very kind words. It was her turn to go in, so as I went to leave, I said a jokingly cocky, “See you on the set!”
“I was, of course, many auditions away from landing that incredible role. But when I finally did, and showed up in Nashville to start work, she walked right up to me, pointed in my face, and with that magical grin said, “See you on the set!” From there, we became fast friends, working very hard to play those 2 troubled Nashvillians, but always having fun and laughing a whole lot along the way. She was, of course, extraordinarily talented, infusing her larger-than-life character with all the heart, charisma, humor, whip-smart intelligence, and flat-out magic that were, alongside whatever troubles and pain she carried, a part of her own personal palette. What a great gift it was to act with her, sing with her, and to just be her friend. She was always extremely kind to my family, especially my wife, Patty, who I’m certain she liked even more than me.”
Together, we are heartbroken that she is gone, and praying for her family, and for all those who, like us, will miss and mourn her so dearly. God bless you, Hayden.
Rest In Peace and Light ❤️
Emme Rylan: (ex-Lizzie Spaulding, GL et al.)” So very sad. Rest in peace sweet soul.”
Bryan Craig: (ex-Morgan, GH) posted a text exchange via his Instagram story he had with Panettiere where they laughed about her making fun of his hat. He wrote: “Love you Hayden. Rest in peace Angel.” Craig later added, “Cherish the moments with people you love and care about. As cliche as it sounds. Send that text, get that cup of coffee, tell them you love them and you’re proud of them. You may not get the chance again.”

John Oliver Recaps His ‘Days of Our Lives’ and ‘General Hospital’ Soap Opera Experience on ‘Last Week Tonight’

Last Week Tonight host, John Oliver had his soap dreams come true on not one, but two long-running daytime dramas, heralding it his “hot soap summer” on the Sunday night, August 16 edition of his HBO series.
As viewers recall, Oliver’s tour of soap duty began back in March when he made a request and an offer to appear in any daytime drama that would have him with certain conditions, which included: having a ridiculous and over the top character name, a juicy storyline, and a slap.
Both Days of Our Lives and General Hospital came a-calling for Oliver, taking him up on his offer and in short order. Oliver appeared on GH in the role of the head of the WSB named Z on episodes airing July 2-6, and then on DAYS in the role of Salem’s chief water inspector, Devlin St. John, in episodes that streamed the week of August 11.

FIRST STOP, PORT CHARLES
On Last Week Tonight, Oliver shared that both soaps delivered, and then launched into a comedic send-up complete with clips from some of his scenes. Starting with General Hospital.
Oliver said, “To General Hospital’s credit, they met all my requirements and more. First, my character got to arrive by a helicopter flanked by a pair of armed goons. And I got to do a dramatic walk during which I bravely shot in the general direction of a guy who was already on the ground. It’s called being an action star, by the way, unless you’re me or Vin Diesel, you really wouldn’t understand. And then in my next scene, I revealed my true identity. (Oliver played the scene where Josslyn wakes up in a hospital bed with Z standing at the side of her bed introducing himself).
He continued, “As for getting slapped, well, they knocked that and me out of the park too, because it turns out that agent’s mother was not happy with me,” explained Oliver, as they cut to the slap of Carly Spencer (Laura Wright) in the WSB Port Charles bureau office on Z. Oliver screamed, “YES! It has everything! A slap, a dramatic closeup, and me doing a voice so wrong, it is genuinely embarrassing. That was my honest attempt at an American accent. I can’t tell you why it’s southern. I can only tell you I was trying my hardest.”

Photo: ABC
SECOND STOP, SALEM
Then, came John’s wrap-up of his role of Devlin St. John on Days of Our Lives, the town’s chief city water inspector. “It is on Days of Our Lives I appeared in scenes alongside soap legends like Jackée Harry (Paulina) and Susan Seaforth Hayes (Julie). And the Days of Our Lives team met my demands in a whole different way because instead of being an international spy boss, they wrote me a character a little more my speed.”
Cut to a clip of Oliver introducing himself as Devlin St. John to Rita. He explains, “I’m the only thing standing between this town and a catastrophic plumbing failure. A literal sewage apocalypse. They made me Salem’s Chief City Water Inspector, which let’s be honest, is perfect casting. If you’re going to bottle my essence and sell it as cologne, it would be called ‘Chief City Water Inspector.'”
DEVLIN’S WIG
The late night host also clarified all the reports, that the wig he wore for his DAYS character he actually brought from home. “Now, as for the hair, I agree, it’s absolutely incredible. It’s been reported this past week that it is a wig I brought to set from home. And while it wasn’t technically from home, we did actually provide that wig, and for good reason,” joked Oliver. “I’ve seen myself act. I knew the hair was going have to do 90% of the work. I’ll be honest, I was going for a healthy John Stamos (ex-Blackie, GH) look, but instead, it appears I ended up looking more like Tina from Bob’s Burgers.”

Photo: Corday Productions
“And if you’re wondering whether I got slapped on Days of Our Lives, not only was I slapped by a man wearing elegant silk pajamas (EJ), I also got to slap him, which felt utterly incredible. But wait, I was also stabbed with a syringe and not once, not even twice, but three different times. And if that wasn’t enough, this happened too.” At that point, Oliver played the clip of Rita using the taser on Devlin.
JOHN OLIVER LEAVES DOOR OPEN FOR A SOAP RETURN
The now late night star-turned-soap actor concluded his segment with, “Are you not entertained? Watching that makes me feel the way I assume Matt Damon felt after seeing the first cut of the Odyssey, both proud and impressed that my body could even do that. Which again, you wouldn’t understand. You’re not an action star like I am now. ”
As he ended his recap, Oliver thanked both soaps for playing along, and noting that neither DAYS or GH actually killed him off! Could a John Oliver return happen down the line? Stay tuned.
Watch John detail his soap dreams come to life on General Hospital and then Days of our Lives below.
Now let us know, what did you think of the performances of John Oliver on General Hospital and Days of our Lives? Did you prefer one over the other or enjoy both of his guest arc visits? Could you see Oliver nominated in the Guest Performer category at next year’s Daytime Emmys, even for a 3-episode run on one of the soaps? Let us know in the comment section.
