In a surprise announcement via his Instagram story on Saturday, The Young and the Restless’ Richard Burgi, seemed to announce his exit from the top-rated soap opera as Ashland Locke.

Burgi, accompanied by his dog, in his video story shared: “I want to say thank you to all you wonderful folks who have been so kind and generous and supportive with your words. I have such gratitude for the support. I’m moving on from the show. I’ve had a great year on Y&R. I’ve just thoroughly enjoyed the great cast and crew. Such wonderful people. I wish you all a good start in 2022, luck, health, love, joy. God bless.”

The veteran soap actor joined Y&R back in March of last year as the feared, ruthless, and respected business tycoon.  He later became involved with, and fell for Victoria Newman (Amelia Heinle), and the couple were married in a major wedding for the CBS soap a few months back. Originally, Ashland’s story revealed he was diagnosed with stage six small cell sarcoma, and he later decided he would undergo chemo treatment to live as long as possible.

No word as to when Burgi’s final airdate will be, if the show is killing-off Ashland, or recasting.

Previously, the actor appeared on General Hospital, Days of our Lives, Desperate Housewives among other notable series.

So, what do you think of Richard Burgi departing Y&R? Comment below.

NOOOOOOOOOO!!! He’s one of the few reasons left to tune into Show these days.

It figures. As soon as we get a good character and actor, they bite the dust! I liked him on GH as well. I don’t know if a recast would be acceptable. Maybe after they find out he pulled this big scam, Victoria will kill him, would serve him right.

I liked him too, Violet. But lately he seems, for lack of a better phrase, emasculated by Victoria. He suddenly seems wishy-washy about EVERYTHING except his “beautiful” wife. And Victoria has turned into a single-minded corporate robot. So they’ve written Ashland into a corner and will, lazily, just write him out. I wish they’d write out Faith and Moses instead.

Such a good actor playing a poorly written character. There was such bad press over the character of Tara Locke but honestly when Tara was written off he should have left too. I have watched burgi since another world and also thought he was great in desperate housewives. What is going on at restless it is an absolute mess we are to believe he adored his son Harrison and that he doesn’t even care that’s he’s living with Kyle and summer in Italy! Maybe this will thaw the character of Victoria because Amelia is playing her like a sleep walking ice princess

Didn’t he just sign a new 1 year contract???

So disappointed! Ashland had potential to be a major villain along with Tara . Unfortunately the writers couldn’t write their way out of a wet paper bag. Sometimes I think CBS gives the Young and the Restless Exex producer a mandate to kill the show. I think there should be a mass boycott until Josh G is let go . Bring back the music scores, get rid of tacky sets , stop writing for characters that no cares about .who actually likes Abby ? There’s no drama anymore : nobody dies , no villains , etc the show stinks .

I am SO upset by this news. While we knew initially it was supposed to be short term when he ended up staying longer than expected, I lived in hope. The best pairing Victoria ever had – I’ve never seen her glow the way she does with him. Generally I can accept a departure more if its the actor’s own choice, but a huge loss nonetheless. A wonderful addition and a huge loss in my opinion.

Agree, 100%. The writers are without a script. Burgi is an excellent talented actor. Burgi Didn’t deserve these plotless scenes. Y & R has become unwatchable. Been a fan since it began. Not any longer. CBS dropped and moved this to pay subscription. Are you kidding. Lucky people tuned in when it was regular tv…

What a shame
I really enjoyed him and he was a rare bright light in a othrwise pitiful y n r regime under Griffith and Morina
Loss of a great and charismatic leading man
Loved him and Victoria together and they re tenderness yet ruthless ambition
After Brad was killed off the show hasnt had any luck replacing him with a third foil for a business titan besides Jack and Victor
I think they tried with Tucker and Cane,
Billy and Devon should be by now
but are to immature and Devon lacks authority,
Adam has potential .

Richard as Ashland couldve mixed it up with Ashley or Jill as a love intrest after Victoria, or waited to tangle with Kyle again for his son. I thought he had real staying power.
Hopefully hes not killed off and a real writer could bring him back once Griffith finally gets fired for abysmal head writing.
Maybe fake his death ?….

WISH THEY WOULD **KILL OFF ABBY…..WAY 2 MUCH SCREEN TIME FOR HER CHARACTER…SOOOO OVER HER….NEW CHANCE IS A CUTIE BUT NOT FEELING IT BETWEEN HIM & ABBY…*SHE SHOULD GO…& DEVON SHOULD GET HIS KID

WANT TO SEE DEVON LOSE IT….HES 2 MUCH IN CONTROL OF HIMSELF TO BE IN A SOAP !!!

That’s a shame. Ashland and Sally are the only characters doing anything interesting on the show. Wish Mr. Burgi all the best.

POOR SALLY…SHE NEEDS A *TEMP SUITOR TO MOTIVATE ADAM…THEY HAVE THE POTENTIAL FOR AN INTERESTING RELATIONSHIP…CHELSA IS A BORING PAIN….

He’d been relegated to a no storyline the day he married Victoria, yet another potential of an interesting show gone down the drain.

An amazing actor who keeps getting treated poorly by daytime. He was quite good as Paul on GH, until (due to budget constraints) the writers committed character assassination by making him a serial killer.

Now Y&R is about to let this talent out the door.

His stint as Karl Meyer on Desperate Housewives was top-notch as well.

I am sad to read about his leaving the show . At the moment , I am trying to think of someone who is capable of replacing him. I feel somewhat as Ron ; Richard adds to my watching the show since there are only two people on the show who hold my interest ; he makes three. Plus , Richard makes a true statement about the son who Kyle took with him without a whimper from Ashton ; he would have fought for his son , mightily. That was extremely weak writing or should I say nonwriting! Violet doesn’t think a recast would be acceptable ; however , I would accept a recast if it is the right person.

The writing is awful so I don’t blame him for leaving.

Not surprised–
Victoria’s relations have all lasted one year(estimated..
All her love interests = one year
Her mariges= one year
(exception Billy- Married about 4 years-)
Victoria has been a one year lover-
So– Ashland is just another one-year marriage/lover.

To mention; the loss of Richard Burgi a great blow to Y&R but–
not unexpected. He is a great actor and will do much better than Y&R.

If they recast him I am DONE with the show for ever. If he’s leaving let him die on the show

Answer me this;

Ashland will either die or leave Victoria-
I still believe Ashland has wanted to destroy the Newmans-
So- when Ashland is no longer-
— will Victoria get Locke’s company, Cyaxares.????______?
I think the deal is phony and she will get nothing.

When Richard leaves Y&R I will stop watching the show.

If I were Richard, I would move on, too. Y&R is an absolute mess with absolutely no drama what so ever! There is no mystery or intrigue. There is no romance at all. It is SOOOOO boring! They need to take an Omicron break, and return in another month or two with a whole new writing team that can actually deliver. And how is Abby’s baby via Devon’s sperm? The baby is super white with blue eyes. It is all terrible! I will miss Richard/Ashton, for he’s a fantastic actor but the material really sucks. Good luck to him with his future endeavors!

This is sad news. I love Richard Burgi as Ashland Locke, and his chemistry with Amelia Heinle has been a wonderful surprise. I had such hope this dynamic and handsome actor, once cured of the character’s cancer, would be strong and highly visible in Genoa City. I love this show, but admit it’s not very exciting in recent years. Mr. Burgi really lit a fire. We surely will see him again soon on another program or movie.

Richard is a good actor on a bad show! What they should have done, being that he looks so much like the late Jerry Douglas [John Abbott] is make him John’s first son he never spoke of. He and Jack could have fought over everything and gotten Tracy and Ashley involved!

But, here is the writing on the wall, Richard Burgi is too expensive! Mark my words, they are cutting him and bringing back Kyle and Summer. You watch!

According to Richard’s wife, he was let go.

He broke Covid protocol (complete bs).

his caliber is’ on point . just like @General Hospital… was killed off, just when things started, with Anna . now this disappointment… he took a stand and walked away… why? when a pairing WORKED with a main character !!! you WREAK HAVOC … ???? before or after your imagination comes to… aside from his calibur… so danged handsome… EASY ! Writers aren’t their

No I Don’t think you should replace Richard Burgi. He had 2 negative Covid test . I think your decision is to harsh . Maybe a suspension for some episodes.

But replacing him ABSOLUTELY NOT

If Y & R doesn’t bring him back I won’t ever watch it again. Not worth my time.

‘General Hospital’s’ Steve Burton Shares Reaction to His Lead Actor Daytime Emmy Nomination, ‘It Was to Honor Leslie Charleson’

The 53rd Annual Daytime Emmy Award nominations kicked-off on Monday with the announcements of four major categories including, Outstanding Lead Performer in a Daytime Drama Series — Actor, and among the nominees is General Hospital’s Steve Burton (Jason Morgan).

Burton is already a two-time Daytime Emmy winner in the Supporting Actor category for his roles as GH’s Jason and his turn as Dylan McAvoy on Y&R. However, Steve is yet to win in the Lead Actor category and he has received 11 nominations along the way in his daytime career.

Following the reveal that he is a 2026 Daytime Emmy nominee, he and his GH co-star, podcast co-host and comedy show partner, Bradford Anderson (Spinelli) taped a special edition of their That’s Awesome podcast just featuring Burton’s reaction to the news.

FOR LESLIE CHARLESON

Steve expressed, “I know it’s such a cliche to say, ‘I’m just so honored to be nominated.’ But truly, I’m so grateful to be nominated, so grateful to just be on the show off and on for 30 plus years and to be nominated with the guys in my category. Just to get the opportunity. Frank (Valentini, executive producer, GH) texted me right away. I was just like, ‘Thank you for the opportunity to get to do what I do.'”

Taking in the moment, Burton thanked those who helped him select the material for his nominated reel. “Unless you win, you don’t get to say things. So. I’m going just say a few things: Elizabeth Korte (co-head writer, GH) helped me a lot with the material, (as did) Michelle Henry, who’s a producer on the show, Laura Wright (Carly, GH), and then my wife Michelle (Lundstrom). I believe it was Jill Phelps who told me that when A Martinez felt like he had a great show or great scenes, he would mark it down. So, when Emmy time comes, you have all the show numbers written down, and you don’t have to think about it, because that’s half the battle (finding the material).

Burton explained how meaningful this nomination is for him, because of playing the scenes of Jason losing Monica, and his closeness with the late, great Leslie Charleson.

“The nomination’s an amazing thing, and it’s beautiful, but really it’s to honor Leslie Charleson. A lot of my material was because of her, and how I started on the show as a Quartermaine, it just means a ton,” shared Burton. “Maurice Benard (Sonny, GH) has obviously has been instrumental, and I’ve said it from day one and I’ll shout it from the rooftops. If it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t be here, and to be working with the people that we work with is incredible.”

SHOULD JOHN OLIVER BE NAMED HOST OF THE DAYTIME EMMYS?

During the end of his conversation with Anderson, Steve suggested that the host of the Daytime Emmy should be Last Week Tonight’s John Oliver, who recently guest starred as the head of the WSB named Z on General Hospital, and is soon to show up on Days of Our Lives in a mystery role in August.

Thus far, the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences has not revealed their host for the upcoming ceremony to be held on October 30 in a venue to be named in Hollywood, California.

You can watch Steve sharing his reaction to receiving his 2026 Lead Actor Daytime Emmy nomination below on a special segment on the That’s Awesome podcast.

Now let us know, are you glad that Steve chose scenes surrounding Jason mourning the loss of the woman that raised him, Monica Quartermaine for his Emmy reel? What do you think of John Oliver as a suggestion to host the Daytime Emmys? Weigh-in via the comment section below.
