Ryan Paevey Returns to General Hospital; But as Nathan West or Someone Else?

In a shocker, Ryan Paevey, who was killed off back in 2018 in a heartbreaking story as Maxie’s true love, Detective Nathan West is heading back to General Hospital. Viewers will recall Nathan was shot and killed by his father, Cesar Faison (Anders Hove) protecting Maxie (Kirsten Storms).

Paevey begins his second run on the ABC daytime drama series this week. According to Deadline, Ryan’s comeback began when he received a text from GH’s executive producer, Frank Valentini and while he will begin taping, he won’t begin to air until sometime in September.

After receiving the initial text, Paevey explained, “We (he and Valentini) talked a bit and he asked would I consider returning for awhile, talking story, floated different story ideas involving different time commitments of me, and I thought if we’re going to do this we should really do it and surprise the fans with a meaty storyline.”

“I was surprised by my excitement for a homecoming and reuniting with familiar faces after seven years. I still have my last call sheet from my final taping day on January 18, 2018, tacked up in my home office,” Ryan revealed.

With two key stories currently playing out on-air, that would tie-in a potential of a return of a very much alive, Nathan West, or his doppelganger, GH fans know that Kelly Thiebaud just returned as Nathan’s back-from-the-dead, Dr. Britt Westbourne. Could she be working in a lab at the Five Poppies Resort as a way to bring her brother back to life?

GH fans have also witnessed that in the newly released promo for the week of August 18-22, Nathan’s former wife, Maxie Jones seems to have some horrible reaction to a skin cream that perhaps was tainted with an intentionally deadly chemical ingredient. This is also paving the way for Storms time off from the show, meaning it would appear that Paevey and Storms won’t cross paths on air for now.

Since exiting the role of Nathan seven years ago, Ryan went on to a very successful career in Hallmark Channel movies after headlining Unleashing Mr. Darcy in 2016. After that, he was the leading man in more than a dozen originals. Ryan has also been working on his own jewelry designs through is Fortunate Wanderer Brand.

Paevey had hinted on some big news forthcoming when on his Instagram account, he shared last week, “I’ve got some news to share with you guys soon. I’ve got some irons in the fire. I got all kinds of fun stuff coming up.”

So, what do you think of Ryan Paevey returning to General Hospital? Do you hope he turns out to be a very much alive Nathan West, or would you prefer he takes on a brand new role? Share your theories via the comment section below.

This is just another reason why writers need to be more creative with characters being killed – especially on screen. I was on a GH break when Nathan died (I think that was when Genie was fired or “put on recurring” – F Frank). Anyways, when Jason died (the 2nd time), it was off screen. He was missing and should’ve been referred to as missing. And Morgan died with a never found body. But all these on screen deaths and subsequent resurrections are getting to be a bit much. Does it take that much to come up with other ways to write people off, especially in this day and age of people leaving but wanting to come back. I’m fine with suspending disbelief – come on back Emily, AJ, Georgie, etc. But I’d prefer a better way to write people off.

I agree with all of your points, and I would add that they also need to be more discriminating as to who needs to come back and who does not. For me, and I know I’m in the minority, I didn’t feel that Brit really needed to come back. This character was afforded legacy stature without having earned it. First, they placed Brit’s picture on the General Hospital Memorial Wall next to the likes of Steve Hardy, Dr Alan Quartermaine and Nurse Bobbie Spencer. Second, they wrote an entire storyline that resurrected Brit after Kelly Thieland firmly stipulated that her character be killed off while also giving into her other demand that her character be romantically paired up with Jason. I don’t dislike Brit, I’m just kind of meh about her, and I don’t understand why the EP bent over backwards to give into the actresses’s demands while not affording a vet like Kelly Monaco even 1/10th of such perks.

Harry, I understand where you’re coming from, but at least with her “resurrection” Britt’s photo will come down from the remembrance wall in time to make room for Monica and Lesley. (They need to remodel that wall). The only living actor (other than Thiebaud) on the wall is Brad Maule. As good as he was as Tony, I’d be in favor of removing his picture and keeping the wall for only those who died IRL.

There’s a lot that we don’t know about the Monaco situation, so I wouldn’t say it’s a fair comparison.

I think unfortunately Kelly M has been blacklisted I think she bucked the system something went down concerning Billy Miller I quit watching at all in 2019 when Billy left I wished he had never taken the role of Jason he was doomed usually if the original actor decides to come back well that’s it a lost twin or some other nonsense. But enough with the Walking Dead it just is a mockery on real tragedy real death you just lost TR and you have lost several actors from GH not real smart Frankie .

Honestly, I think at this point if I were a resident of Port Charles, I’d stop saying that anybody, literally anybody, is “dead”; I’d be adopting phrasing like “Sam, who we assume at the moment is dead” and “Luke, who everyone thinks is dead but you never know these days.” The number of times it has happened now would have to mess with your psyche (and these folks don’t need anything more wrong with them, psychologically speaking). I think I’d stop having (or attending) funerals: why bother, when there’s a 50-50 chance the person isn’t truly dead?

To undo Nathan’s emotional death would be just too much.

Since crazy masks etc. run in the family, what if Peter survived Felicia’s tire iron and got plastic surgery to resemble Nathan?

Paevy seems to indicate this isn’t long term, so a full scale Nathan return from the dead seems a bit unlikely.

Please don’t bring him back from the dead. It’s a tired storyline.

If it is

Spoiler
Peter August
then it shows how out of touch everyone at this soap happens to be.

Im am so so excited. I love Nathan but hed be a great hunky dr

I am really surprised at this.I watched him on Instragram months ago. A fan said he wondered if Ryan would return to GH and he said ” sorry I won’t be returning to GH. It was not a positive experience at all. We had talks but let’s just say they were not productive. This business doesn’t care about it’s people”!! So why this turnaround? He sounded very bitter.

It is “hard” watching some GH characters come back to life whilst so many GH actors have actually died.

They should change the name of the show to General Hospital: Resurrection.

Or Walking Dead:GH

Since Nathan is the one member of the Faison family who NEVER entered the gates of Hell, I have absolutely no say in whether or not he returns to Earth.

However, given the timing, and the probability that Maxie is about to take a trip to Veggieland for a few months, I’m guessing that she meets Nathan where ever he is. Or where ever her mind – trapped in the veggie state tells her he is.

I don’t think they’re actually planning on undoing the fact that he was shot dead by his own father, who is now literally brainless, and sits on his couch all day, watching FAUX “News” and reality TV here in Hell.

As for his half brother Whiny Heiny – he’s definitely in Hell, and we aren’t letting him out!

If Nathan can come back, why can’t Dex? Just wondering.

He’s probably alive too

No, he’s not. Trust me.

Keep wondering. Paevy won’t be playing Nathan.

Xander recast? I surely hope so!

Zander is also dead.

Unless Maxie’s fainting spell leads to a near death storyline and she goes to heaven and is greeted by Nathan. It was how OLTL was able to bring back Jessica Tuck after killing her off.

It’s time to get over it.

You just never know do we? Your admiration of Dex ( Evan Hofer ) just might be enough for Frank to bring him back… with all these returned from the dead.. who knows anymore??

I’m a fan of both Kelly Thiebaud and Ryan Paevey, but both their characters died on screen, and yes this is a soap and its part of the genre so I’m not mad but I’m getting only icky about it because GH is doing it a lot lately and they are undoing their own work, It also makes me feel like Ron C is writing the show again, this is very DOOL vibe resurecting characters back from the dead. whose next? Ceasar Faison? Victor Cassadine? Dex, Duke again, Sam(bad decision by the show to kill her off), And lets not forget this show unfortunately has had a lot of real life major losses, and those can’t go un addressed on air, it wouldn’t be fair to those iconic characters, Monica, Lesly, and now Robert. The show needs to address those and stay away from killing off characters for awhile.

GH does have a Ron C vibe lately.

Hell forbid that ever happens again. Now on the other horn, Bob Guza also has left Beyond The Gates, and his writing actually could save GH right about now.

As long as he doesn’t try to bring back Teddy Balkan.

First of all, GH really doesn’t need to be “saved” right now.

And second, do you really think Guza could work with Frank (who isn’t going anywhere).

If Frank actually wants to keep GH on the air, why would he be opposed to working with the last truly great head writer the show had?

Maybe that should have been the move in early 2012? Replacing Jill Fred Phelps with Frank, but bringing Guza back as the head writer.

Not surprised that he got fired after the Teddy Balkan story, because that was admittedly awful. But the full on assault on the Spencer family from Garin Wolf in the back half of 2011 was arguably worse. And then ReRon’s writing went downhill from there.

The Frank/Guza combination is actually the only thing that has NOT been tried yet. So I say give it a shot. I would say the successful launch of Beyond the Gates is evidence that Bob still knows how to do this, despite the Balkan clusterphuck.

Robert Guza Jnr only came out of his retirement to help launch Beyond the Gates; I don’t see him sticking around daytime, especially since he has already left Gates.

With the caveat “if they are going to stick with the mob et al.”, I agree with you. Nobody else has written GH effectively with Sonny et al. as the focus; Guza is the only one who has been able to tell those stories compellingly and coherently, and I think it’s (partly) because he went all in on it and didn’t try to gloss over the bloodier, uglier sides of mobsterness. The other “partly” is that he’s simply the best headwriter currently out there; his ability to tell a story is unsurpassed, though I really didn’t like the storylines while he was in charge–but the stories were superbly and expertly told.

I think Ron C also did a very good job shifting the show away from its Sonny admiration and attempted to have Sonny and his groupies fit into Port Charles a little more realistically, given that he’s a mobster and on the whole should logically be shunned by the good citizens, unequivocally. I suspect ABC either wanted to go that way or else accepted his recommendation, but about the time of the Prospect Park debacle, they seemed to change their minds and gone back to Sonny as He Who Can Do No Wrong, and I don’t think Carlivati’s writing was as effective after that (not that the majority of the headwriters and headwriting teams that have followed him have been especially good either).

I agree with Scott (ATWT fan), though: he’s not interested in coming back. Though they ought to be moving heaven and earth (sorry, Satan, we’ll leave hell out of it) to get him back (and who knows, maybe they are).

I am thrilled that Kelly Thiebaud and Ryan Paevey are back !!! What I hate seeing is how Valentin is allowing a child abuse storyline . Drew’s emotional abuse of Scout is disgusting !! We all know that Valentin adores Cameron Matheson , but the writers have gone too far !!!

His emotional abuse of Wiley is even worse.

They are addressing the Scout issue with Alexis, Molly, and Marco discussing suing Drew for custody. “Child abuse” is a strong term which might be a stretch in this situation.

I’m sure you meant to type Valentini and not the character of Valentin.

as Clint Buchanan !!

Is ABC gearing up for a OLTL reboot?

That would be the reverse Benjamin Button.

Please don’t let this Molly romance novel enactment turn into an ongoing storyline. The actress and audience deserves better.

Yeah… the rumors of ReRon secretly writing GH again are starting to look more likely with this kind of dragonshit. It has the potential of being every bit as awful as the “Body & Soul” crap he pulled on Days.

His writing was more original than your endless schtick.

I re-watched the episode where we briefly saw “Clint Buchanan ” as I mistakenly thought the actor was Ryan. Oops!

Bring him back as Nathan, why not Britt came back as herself, along with others in the past.
