Talk about a last second reprieve in a new and exciting way! Last week on May 16, S.W.A.T. fans, watched the series finale after 8 seasons of the tactical procedural drama starring Shemar Moore (ex-Malcolm, The Young and the Restless) as Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson. CBS had canceled the show after its multiple resuscitations along the way.

Now on Sunday comes a surprise move by Sony Pictures Televisions. The company has picked up the show in a series spin-off version titled, S.W.A.T. Exiles. Shemar Moore will be back as the star reprising his role of “Hondo” in the 10-episode sequel.

However, at this time, S.W.A.T. Exiles has not been sold to any  broadcaster, streamer or cable network, domestically or internationally. In a statement, Sony shared, “By announcing the news at its LA Screenings event for international buyers, Sony is making a bet that it will find ‘the right homes and partners for these new stories to reach the passionate ‘S.W.A.T.’ fanbase and attract new viewers.”‘

Here is the official logline for the spin-off: “After a high-profile mission goes sideways, Daniel ‘Hondo’ Harrelson is pulled out of forced retirement to lead a last-chance experimental SWAT unit made up of untested, unpredictable young recruits. Hondo must bridge a generational divide, navigate clashing personalities, and turn a squad of outsiders into a team capable of protecting the city and saving the program that made him who he is.”

In addition. Sony notes it’s already developing the new show, and that it plans to start production this summer in Los Angeles. The studio also believes that in greenlighting S.W.A.T. Exiles, that it is, “preserving jobs for the 200-person local production crew who have been instrumental to the success of the original series for the last eight seasons.”

Shemar Moore took to his Instagram (complete with a video and a written post) and made the announcement about S.W.A.T. Exiles. He wrote, You heard it here first, Hondo’s not done yet. Be on the lookout for S.W.A.T EXILES – he’s back not just to lead, but to rebuild. New recruits. No second chances.”

Lord 8 seasons is a good run for a primetime show. He needs to just let the show go out on top. I have never seen a celebrity keep peddling it to avoid cancelation. Jesus Christ.

Alrighty then.

He’s not the only one. Kelsey Grammer was doing the same thing for the Frasier reboot. I agree, there comes a time when you have to realize/accept that something is over. Eight years for SWAT and thirteen or fifteen for Frasier is quite impressive and the there should be residuals from the repeats and both actors were executive producers of their shows, so they should make out pretty well. Go out when you are still at the top of your game,

Richard…EXACTLY!!!!! Thank You. That Shemar Moore dude needs to move on to something else…and to something COMPLETELY DIFFERENT!!!!! ENOUGH ALREADY!!!!!

I thought the finale was just right. Enough with these spinoffs.

I’m predicting this will go over about as well as the last season of “Scrubs”, when they moved the show to ABC, and the real cast of the show appeared for maybe 5 minutes an episode, and that was only one or two of them at the time, with the rest of the show devoted to newbies that nobody cared about.

SWAT was a decent show. And unlike most reboots, which seem to crash and burn within one or two seasons, they actually got 8 years out of this one. Ironically, the original SWAT series in the 1970s only lasted two seasons, with most mortals remembering the show’s theme song (also used for the reboot) more than any actual details about the show itself.

So I would say 8 years is more than enough, all things considered. Let it go, Shemar.

I’m excited! Let the new adventures begin! Go Hondo and Team!
