Good grief. Tired of all the new characters.

They’re just getting warmed up…the new writer starts soon!

4ever DAYS…YEP!!!!! And…once Chuck CHUCKY Pratt starts writing for/ruining Y&R, he’ll end up doing 2X DAMAGE (and beyond) than that soulless JFP!!!!! S-a-d.

She will probably play a psychic with an apartment full of cats! .

Your comment kills me! LOL

lol…i have a sister with an apartment full of cats but not a psychic…she is on her own planet…lol

So funny…love the wry humor !!

This is ridicoulos casting, Please bring back Tricia Cast as Nina Webster and also Sheila Carter. I miss Kimberlin Brown so much as Sheila Carter. Grainger. Forrester and Warwick. Man Sheila loves to marry men lol. Liz Taylor nobody can beat. LOL. too many newbies coming to The young and The Restless. Who is next Rosie O Donnel, Paris Hilton or Jessica Simpson lol. you know what I mean, this casting is getting very silly and ridicoulos. Might as well call Kim Kardashian or Nicole Ritchie for a cameo lol. Just kidding folks.

Well, Claudio, you’re right. I thought it was The Y O U N G And The Restless. No offense, but, if an older character is to come on stage, then it wish it were someone with whom we younger fans are familiar.

There are many young people inY&R. They need older people because Catherine is gone. I enjoy all ages. From children to the 90 year olds, they all bring something to the show. Pay attention to the older people, one day when you are their age, you will wish you had!

KateA, I could not agree more. However, let’s not bussing actors who were big in the 70’s and 80’s into town. Let’s use soap actors who are out of work! Yes, Jeanne Cooper died but I know of a very classy, incredibly talented beautiful actress of a certain age whose soap went off the air, and who is raring to work. She can play many different personalities/characters at the same time too but only requires salary for one.
I will give you three guesses as to whom I am referring and the first two do not count.

I would be happy with that outcome also!

I see Y&R copying GH ..
GH is never stale because of new people who bring new stories, and then they leave..lol
GH is doing very well with their way of doing things..
Y&R needed help (yawn) and saw GH was doing really well with new peoples stories.
Y&R hardly ever brought in new people until recently…

Y&R brought Tristin in and wasted him, terribly wasted him.. shame on them.. LOL
Well, what works for GH just might work for Y&R, they are trying..
Gotta the love both soaps.. !! 🙂
…………………… Long live Y&R!! (and GH..

su0000, you are so right. Tristan is being wasted, big time! Get him away from Jill and give him something to do.

Oh please. Y&R is not copying GH. Do you not recall Bonnie Franklin? She appeared on Y&R way before GH started their own stunt casting with the likes of Donna Mills.
Having said that, I am tired of the stunt casting from both of my soaps. I love Sally Kellerman. I love Donna Mills. But these soaps need to pay fidelity to their own core characters–this type of stunt casting is not necessary. Honestly, I keep getting all excited when I hear someone new is coming to either GH or Y&R. I am looking for Erika Slezak to appear as the new matriarch on either Y&R or GH. But SU00, just so you know I am not always trying to be contrary to your opinions, I do agree with you about Y&R’s handling of that gem of an actor, Tristan Rogers.
He was wasted on Y&R with very dull and badly written storylines. I liked him with Jill–they are a hoot together and they did their best to rise above the redundant and limited writing. I wish I could say I harbor some hope that the new head writer would give this talent the writing he deserves, but suffice to say, I will not hold my breath.

hey harry 🙂
I wasn’t clear the way I said ”new people” I included all the many many vets GH brought back..
I would have to say GH is awesome with bringing vets back!
it’s always fun to see them all again!
Tristin should be in the mix with all his buddies, the bad guys, at GH now.
He is needed!
And Harry– it’s always fun to share an opinion with you ..
Ohh and.. I am excited for Pratt to start and put a fire under Y&R, it is badly needed..

Su00.

Today’s Y&R was good–not one scene in which I felt compelled to go scour the bathroom. I do want Tristan back on GH. On that score we certainly agree.

What a shame JFP isn’t tapping into veteran actresses she worked with on OLTL like Erika, Robin, or Hillary. Oh wait she is anti daytime and pro primetime.

I agree. Daytimers should take of each other.

Timmm…y-e-s…they should. But, sadly, that’s not always the case……….

I keep hoping primetime will take her away, FAR FAR AWAY!!!!!

Now, that’s more like it, Melador. I would welcome any of those ladies with open arms.

She’ll lock ‘HOT’ lips, over drinks, with lover Maureen…lol

It has always been my deepest hope that Phyllis and Avery’s mother would come town, but the name of this character doesn’t mesh with them, so my hopes are once again dashed. Since she is coming in November the character will most likely be connected to one of sweeps stories. November sweeps stories are usually the best, so it looks good for this character to be in thick of whatever they have planned

Seriously, Con wont have any ‘family ties’ to Maureen like in my silly joke…she has ties to Ian Ward and will have revenge against Dullian ect.

As always, jimh, your suggestions are sound. Thinking along those lines, this Constance character could very well have been part of Ian’s ‘cult’.

Read other articles on this. She is going to play a grandmother in a wheelchair. Sounds like Sharon’s mom Doris to me.

Sounds like she is Sharons mom now…but it would be great if she had other ties like belonging to Wards cult or having other children Sharon is unaware of which would mean Sharon has a brother or sister coming to town…newbie Joe could be her brother for example…just a thought!!!

That would be great Jim. For Doris to do something other than to either be there for Sharon or to reprimand her, which I remember her doing often.

jimh…let me tell ya’…at this point, I would S-A-L-U-T-E ANY Y&R CHARACTER getting ANY KIND of revenge on that walking and talking STIFF AS A BOARD Dylan!!!!! LOL!!!!!

Take care, Jim. Peace.

This is just so out of hand at this point. What is the norm now? A new character
every month??

Maybe it’s one of Victor’s past flames. Lol

And to think…the new writer hasn’t taken over yet!

Y & R has proven very lucrative for former sitcom stars. Its nice they can get some work and is usually a hoot seeing them. If they can enhance the story a little…why not? These stunt casts are never at the expense of veterans so it is okay.

I don’t think Sally was a sitcom star– she was in the movie MASH, not the television show. As a Trekkie I remember her most for her role in the 2nd pilot for the original Star Trek the series– called Where No Man Has Gone Before—

Lol…that’s what my husband says to me all the time…Mary, Mary….I’m so naughty…lol.

I remember her from that Rodney Dangerfeld comedy called, Back to School.
She played an English literature professor. Every time I see her I hear Rodney saying,”Hey professor–why don’t you come over some time and help me straighten out my Longfellow?”

True, J. But was this actress on any memorable sitcom?…..I mean one that is etched in viewers minds? I never heard of this woman. Okay, she was in the movie MASH, as Hot Lips…..but I would have never known that or her if I hadn’t googled her.
I am familiar with the episodes….my dad watches whenever reruns of MASH are televised…That’s his era. But, I thought Loretta Swit played that role. I didn’t even know there was a movie !!!!! Way before my time, I guess.
And, that’s the crux of the matter. So many older actors/actresses are presented that just sweep by and then are never again seen. Obviously, there must be a reason for this character to appear. Perhaps she’s heralding a more significant character to a plot?
In that case, Jimh’s idea that somehow Ian Ward is involved with her appearance makes sense.
We shall see, albeit sometimes it is hard to keep all the ducks in a row…Y&R is starting to look like Grand Central.

Stunt casting has been done for decades and fans enjoyed the appearances of many movie and primetime stars like Liz Taylor, Carol Burnett ect. ect. and there were never any complaints…now there is which i think is ridiculous…if daytime stars can make guests appearances in primetime then there should be no problem with primetime stars working in daytime…whether its tv, movies or stage any actor should be welcomed no matter where the job is!!!

Well, jimh…that just shut me right up. LOL

jimh-
”stunt casting” usually is a star, I’ve never heard of Sally Kellerman.. lol

They should hire Henry Winkler to appear on the show as Fonz and change the CD’s in the Jukebox at Crimson! They are always the same ones!

At least I would know it’s the Fonz. Who doesn’t know the Fonz ? LOL

and I LOVE Henry Winkler. He was so good as the Bluth’s inept and corrupt family attorney on Arrested Development.
With our luck, and with what has been transpiring, we will probably get Suzanne Summers demonstrating her Thigh Master to Victor Newman.

I’m thinking Carrie Nye as Susan Piper on Guiding Light. Diva glamour, mystery ….. bring it on, Sally!

Mark…oh, dude…I remember Carrie Nye from the GL days. Carrie’s character of Susan Piper was ALL KINDS OF CREEPY!!!!! But…Carrie made her Susan Piper character BEYOND ENTERTAINING!!!!! Example: Whenever Susan said the word ‘dahling’, both me and my mom ended up LOL…EVERY TIME!!!!! Dude…oh how I miss Guiding Light. Soap-wise, those were the days. Sigh.

Take care, Mark.

A-C-E-S!!!!!

Wow! Hot Lips? ….had to look her up…never heard of her.

Watch the movie version of Mash if it airs or if you can rent it…make it a movie date night with your husband…its a good movie and im positive both of you will enjoy it!!!

They called her the thinking man’s sex symbol way back in the 70’s. That’s what my dad said, anyway.
So who was the un thinking man’s sex symbol of the 70’s? Suzanne Summers?

Hi, jimh. Before I go back to my students, I will make a point of watching more of the old movies, and DARK SHADOWS which you mention quite a few times. You have piqued my interest.

My grandparents have an arsenal of these movies. I have watched MADAME X, CASABLANCA,GONE WITH THE WIND,TWO WOMEN ,SOME LIKE IT HOT, TO KILL A MOCKING BIRD, and soooo many others…mostly during the holidays.

I really don’t have that much time. My new baby will be 5 months old on the 25th…maternity leave is almost over . I also have a 5 year old. So, soon my time will be very limited. Thank God for my Mommy, whose help is immeasurable.

I really do love the old movies. I am enraptured by Gregory Peck and Alan Ladd…they were hot. Also the clothes were so chic. Gran says those were the days, while Nanna bemoans the shoulder pads and pencil-thin eyebrows.

I love Meredith Baxter in her role as Maureen and I hope Sally K. is her secret or not-so lover. These divas are quirky and cool and I think the “regular” actors enjoy working with them.

A Baptistery. That’s assuming Meredith’s character is lesbian. We don’t know that…unless I missed something. But, I’d rather she be paired with Nikki, if that’s the case.

lol…i joked about that scenerio above!!!

I do not know why people are getting upset over a new character, that will only be around for a few episodes! I think it’s a great idea for shows to bring in guest stars for limited time, in order to bring in much needed fresh air from time to time. My only problem is when they do the whole “mystery character” who is suppose to have a surprising connection to a character already on canvas, I usually end up disappointed in the connection being weak and having no value to the storyline.

And what will they do?? Involve her in either the sharon/phyllis mess or the Avery/Joe debacle that’s sure to come. For once why can’t these veteran actresses/actors be given a whole story that focuses on them and not throw them into the mix of current storylines. An older actor to rival Victor in business..he doesn’t have to have 50,000,000 relatives…an older actress who is heading her own company and very powerful..anything but throwing them into the midst of already bad drama. Creating a meaningful character from a veteran of stage and screen and tv could quite possibly wake a writer up and make them look at the whole canvas. Oh who knows. They certainly don’t care. At least she’s working again.

They will never learn. Enough with the stunt casting, write stories that intertwine new and vetran actors and if you need to bring on new characters, dig into the past and bring back some of the old characters for short story arcs.

As much as I like Gina Tognoni she is always going to be under the shadow of Michelle Stafford. They should have brought her on as Phyllis but really Sheila Carter and show the real Phyllis died years ago.

This is whuy your lucky if I watch one full episode a week. how the ratings for this pile of garbage are still high is beyond me.

I’m already more impressed with GT than I ever was MS. At least GT doesn’t exaggerate every word and motion for emphasis; which drove me crazy with MS.
I believe the ratings are high because it’s the best soap on a TV and always has been. I don’t watch piles of garbage for entertainment…not sure why someone would.

Gail…you are so RIGHT ON!!!!! I’ve always thought that Gina Tognoni was a WAY BETTER ACTRESS than Michelle Stafford. Guess what??? I still do. But that’s just me. Furthermore, I LIKE what GT is bringing to the Y&R TABLE!!!!! Yes, indeed!!!!! As for Michelle Stafford…Michelle who?????

Take care, Gail. Peace.

Jay and Gail. You both think Gina is a better actress than Michelle because SHE is the better actress.
I always thought MS was one note. Whatever the scene, her tone of voice was always the same.
Gina already owns this role. She is knocking it out of the ballpark,

Why do some sound like this has never happened before: Peggy Cass, Sammy Davis, Carol Burnett have all made cameo to longer appearances in daytime over the years and movie actors such as Joan Bennet and Mcdonald Carey took on staring roles on soaps but suddenly now there is an outrage when it happens today?…so what if primetime comes to daytime…Hollywood rarely gives acting jobs for many actors over 50…its great that daytime still has a place for them(ok, sometimes soaps are no better with mature actors like Leslie/Monica on GH for example) but they still give many something to do…now i understand viewers fustrations on ‘does my show need a newbie’ or ‘why not hire a former soap star’ but why is it congratulations to a daytime star who finds primetime or movie work but not for a primetime or movie actor when they get a daytime gig??? Just a thought!!!

Always can depend on you to be a voice of sanity on this site– you forget to mention Jeanne Cooper was a name movie star when she took the role of Katherine, for truly professional actors a gig is a gig

Sally was and is no doubt still is a wonderful dramatic actress– the movie MASH wasn’t a comedy comedy and she was flawless in it. Plus as I said earlier as a Trekkie I remember her most for her appearance in the classic Star Trek the television series.

I don’t mind so call stunt casting as much as I mind those guest spots that have nothing to do with the story but are just there so some famous person can come on for one day– just for them—a role has to created or their appearance has to be justify, which disrupts the flow of the show— but casting a name for a role that was going to be there regardless of who played it, that’s different- but as I see on this site not too many of the younger folk even knew who she was, so if they were counting on her name to bring in viewers it may have backfired.

Thank you Mary, i can depend on you for reminding me on things i shouldnt forget…like legendary Jeanne Cooper…and give yourself some credit too…you have been a great voice of sanity yoursel…i always read and look forward to your comments!!!

Jim, you make a good point. I do love Kellerman. I sit corrected.
I will shut up now.

I suppose, jimh, it is because we find comfort with what is familiar to us. You mentioned Joan Bennett and Carol Burnett , for example. If I had to choose, I would pick Carol Burnett to come to be part of one of my soaps. Why? Because I know her. I have no idea who Joan Bennett is?
Perhaps I am not expressing myself well…I am botching it. But, it has nothing to do with ageism…

I respect the elderly; it is from them I gather much of my learning, whether it be how to solve a problem or how to discipline children etc. But, Y&R is going a bit overboard. JMO.
Perhaps I shouldn’t put my foot in it because Constance may turn out to be an integral part to a very important storyline, fundamentally speaking. I hope it is the prolonged , who’s the Daddy? Nick or Jack?
Yes, I know it’s Nick…but, another twist may arise…who knows!!!

CeeCee, you never watch old movies…my girl, you’re missing out on some real entertaining classics like 1950s ‘Father Of The Bride’ staring Spencer Tracy, Liz Taylor, and JOAN BENNET!!! Joan also costarred with Katherine Hepburn in 1930s version of ‘Little Women'(by the way i own a 1933 deck of ‘Little Women’ playing cards with a picture of the stars on the cover including Joan and Kate)…plus Joan was one of the great stars of the 1960s daytime supernatural soap opera ‘Dark Shadows’ which you can check out on Youtube if you have it and see Joan as Collins matriarch Elizabeth Collins Stoddard…Joan was a very talented and classy actress!!!

jimh..
To get a big star or just a star, to appear on a soap is big big big money, these days..
Media was very different back in 70’s when Liz and Carol did a guest spot..
these days it will cost, and a lot ..

and– GH doesn’t need stunt stars, it is bursting with stars!
Maura West, Michelle Stafford, Billy Miller, Roger Howarth, Michael Easton..
Finola Hughes, Maurice, Anthony Geary, Jane Elliot, Kathleen Gati ..
wow huh!!!.. and more and more!
GH don’t need no big stars heh it has them 🙂

Yeah su…i agree partially with you…GH and all soaps have great stars but primetime, movies and daytime are full of stars of equally talent and shouldnt be limited to one specific area where one is only allowed to act…what if primetime shows never hired an actor because he or she appeared on soaps and only hired primetime stars for primetime shows…many movie actors appear on stage…should plays only hire stage actors…that wouldnt be right…an actor should act anywhere no matter their past experience…like i said soap stars can act in primetime or movies so why not viceversa…its no big deal to me…its been done for decades!!!

I actually think Su00 makes some good points, Jim. When the late great Elizabeth Taylor appeared on GH, the soap genre (GH in particular) was going strong so there was more of a generous spirit coming from the soap fans.
Some of us are feeling shrill and defensive of our soaps and want to see the core characters on more while being afforded stronger, more character driven story lines.
But I am so on your page about the old classics. This Thursday on TCM two of my favorties, The Ghost of Mrs. Muir and Portrait of Jenny will be on.
That said, Sally Kellerman seems like a doll and I love her lilting speaking voice.
You youngsters–watch the old classics–they do not disappoint and while Birth of a Nation is before my time, I do know it was the first motion picture released to theaters.

Rumor has it that she is going to play Sharon’s mom Doris.

I thought Doris was in a wheelchair. And, I doubt she’s that old.

Other articles have already stated that the character that Sally Kellerman is playing is a grandmother in a wheelchair. Which would mean Doris. Why bring on another grandmother in a wheelchair?

Uhoh !! Does anyone ales see the similarities between Nina’s awakening and Phyllis’s? Will Phyllis go on a rampage also, ( the destruction of Silas’s room) or will she keep that ‘just under the surface’ rage contained?
It feels like déjà vu. (already seen)…..except out was on GH.

Also, I don’t understand why Kelly is so invested in Nick’s and Sharon’s wedding ??

I am assuming the church is episcopalian. It looks catholic…….if it is, it would be another faux pas by TPTB. divorcees are not allowed to marry in the Catholic Church….never ever!!! Unless, widowed or the previous marriage is annulled.

CeeCee…I don’t understand it, either. Weird.

CeeCee ..
..Why ” Kelly is so invested in Nick’s and Sharon’s wedding”
Well,
Kelly is a loser and trying to impress everyone by being a great wedding planner..
.. Kelly the Wedding Planner … lol

((I do not like the Dixie Cooney character ..lol

Kate A…you have completely missed my point. Please do not lecture me on ageism. I have four grandparents and two great-grandparents. I enjoy them and their wisdom very much. We will all be old someday. I would like an older person to stay permanently as Catherine. Dool has Caroline…I like that, so please , with all due respect, re-read my posts before you address me personally. Thank you.

“In a casting call released last month, Constance was described as “a sweet and old fashion grandmother who, is active and alert even though she’s in a wheelchair.” Y&R noted in the casting call that it wanted a “name” actress for the part.” Grandmother in a wheelchair. Who does that sound like? Easy. Sharon’s mother Doris. Constance is obviously a fake name so that people don’t know it is Doris. Sharon is in a hot storyline that will probably come to a head in time for November sweeps and she will need her mom. Or her mom will come to tell her how wrong she is, like she has always done.

Okay, I understand your reasoning, Janet. But, why the subterfuge? Is the fake name for the viewer’s benefit? Why? I’m confused. I mean, Doris never had to use a fake name in the past whenever she felt her daughter needed her….so, why now?

It’s not the character who wants to remain secret. Y&R has a history of keeping returning characters a secret until they air. Like when Donna recently returned or when Philip Chancellor came back from the dead. The show does not want anyone to know it is Doris.

Christel Khalil Reveals She Almost Quit Acting After ‘That’s So Raven’ Audition, But Then Came ‘The Young and the Restless’

Published

The Young and the Restless fan favorite, Christel Khalil (Lily Winters) is the special guest on this week’s edition of Soapy Hosted by Rebecca Budig and Greg Rikaart which dropped today on Tuesday, June 23rd.

During the interview with Rebecca and Greg, Khalil who had played Lily Winters on-screen since August of 2002, nearly 24 years with the CBS soap, shared how early on her teenage acting career, she was ready to call it quits in show business, after a heartbreaking audition for the lead of a new Disney Channel sitcom, which later turned out to be the hit seres, That’s So Raven, starring Raven-Symoné which ran for four seasons from 2003-2007.

Christel recalled what happened. “I was 14 and I had always auditioned for all these Disney projects. So I auditioned for That’s So Raven, it was between me and Raven-Symoné and it was called at the time Absolutely Psychic,” explained Khalil. “The character was this girl who had psychic ability, but then when Raven got the role, they named the title of the show after her.”

Photo: CBS

HOW A BROTHERLY TALK CHANGED THE COURSE OF CHRISTEL’S CAREER

Reliving the disappointment to Greg and Rebecca, Christel explained, “I lost that part and I was just so devastated, because for the network call there were 20 people in the room watching me, and I just have always had such performance anxiety. I just completely bombed the audition and it was terrible. So, I was just devastated. I was actually going to quit acting and then I got the final call for The Young and The Restless and I wasn’t going to go.”

It was Khalil’s brother, who actually got her to reconsider, and if he hadn’t, we would not have our Lily Winters in Genoa City! Christel recounted, “I was like, ‘You know what? I’m done. I don’t want to do this anymore. I’m just going to hang out with my friends.’ I was just devastated. My brother, who is seven years older than me, and he had quit acting at the same age that I was at that time. He said to me, ‘I promise you, I actually really regret quitting. Just go on this audition and if you don’t get it, you can quit.'”

Christel’s screen-test for the role of Lily was actually with the late, great, Kristoff St. John who would play her father Neil (Later it was revealed to Lily, that Neil’s brother, Malcolm Winters was her bio-dad).

Photo: CBS

ACTING WAS EASY WITH THE LATE KRISTOFF ST. JOHN

“So, I went (to test for Lily) and I remember the screen-test was with Kristoff St. John. It was just so easy to act with him because he’s just so there. I remember just being on set, and that was my first time there for a screen-test where you were actually on set. I had never experienced that before. It was my first time being with an actor and  having makeup done, which just helps you really be able to do your best work.”

Recalling the screen-test with the St. John, Khalil, “It was where I had to be emotional ( in the scene) and I always had issues being emotional at auditions. But I was there with him, it just came, and it happened. It was natural and I felt so good and it was amazing. It stands out in my mind a lot.”

You can check out the full Soapy conversation with Christel Khalil where she also discusses juggling motherhood, marital life, and the demands of soap operas.

Fan can listen to weekly episodes of Soapy on Audacy or wherever podcasts are available, and can watch full video episodes weekly on the CBS =Brand YouTube Channel. Whether a lifelong fan or discovering the genre for the first time, SOAPY offers a fresh, fun behind-the-scenes look at the stories – and storytellers – that define daytime drama.

Now let us know, over the years what had been your favorite Lily Winters story on Y&R as played by Christel Khalil? What did you think of of Christell’s recollection where she was up for the lead of “That’s So Raven” as a teenager, before it was even titled that? Let us know via the comment section.

Deidre Hall Marks 50 Years as ‘Days of Our Lives’ Dr. Marlena Evans

Published

on

By

If you have ever tuned-in to the soap opera genre over the last 50 years, and witnessed some of the greatest romances, drama, classic and outlandish storylines of all-time, you would have seen Deidre Hall smack dab in the middle of it as longtime Salem heroine, Dr. Marlena Evans.

It was 50 years on this date, June 21, 1976 that Hall first appeared on DAYS on NBC which was its home for 57 years before it moved to its current streaming platform on Peacock in September of 2022.

In Hall’s first episode she was introduced as a psychiatrist treating Mickey Horton (John Clarke) at Bayview Sanitarium after he suffered a complete mental breakdown. Mickey learned that his brother Bill Horton (Edward Mallory) was the biological son of Mike Horton (Wesley Eure) with his wife Laura (Susan Flannery) and that he had been lied to for years and years. From that moment on, the rest is television and soap opera history. Days of Our Lives put Hall front and center.

Photo: NBC

There were so many heartbreaking and shocking story twists involving the beloved Marlena. One of the first was the historic crib death of baby DJ (Don Jr.) in 1980, Marlena’s infant son with Don Craig (Jed Allan). The story had never been told on daytime television and Hall’s performances received accolades from TV critics to fans when Deidre received thousands of letters from grieving mothers who had gone through the same thing in their own lives.

DAYS also brought Deidre’s twin sister, Andrea Hall Lovell to the show as her on-screen sister Samantha, who had a grudge and even locked Marlena up in a sanitarium and took her place! Fast-forward and in 1982, DAYS launched the Salem Strangler story where everyone believed Marlena was his next victim, only it turned out to be Samatha. Jake Kositchek (played by Jack Coleman) was revealed to be the actual serial killer.

Later, Deidre would assume the role of Marlena’s look-alike, Hattie Adams in 2004, once played by her sister, Andrea. Over the years, Hattie has come back to Salem and caused trouble giving Hall a chance to play a different type of character, then the always upstanding Marlena.

THE LOVES OF MARLENA

Deidre Hall struck gold with all her leading men: from the late Jed Allan, to Wayne Northrop as Roman Brady, and of course, her enduring love story with the late John Black played by the iconic Drake Hogestyn. In fact, Marlena’s 1986 wedding to John (who was believed to be Roman at the time) remains a favorite of fans to this day.

TOP MARLENA STORYLINES OF ALL-TIME

While the list is long, here are several that were some of the memorable during Deidre’s five decades in Salem!

The Possession (1994- 1995)
Considered one of the most ambiguous, outlandish and unforgettable story arcs in soap opera history, then Days of Our Lives head writer, James Reilly went there! Marlena was possessed by the devil! That included; the demonic eyes, hissing at father John (Black) the priest, morphing into creatures, and the classic levitating in her bed! It became a cultural phenomenon and cemented Deidre Hall’s status as a daytime television legend. Just ask Ryan Gosling!

The Affair with John Black (1993)
John and Marlena’s forbidden love could not be denied and they had passionate affair, while she was still married to the real Roman. Problem was her daughter, Sami (Alison Sweeney) caught her mother having sex with John on a desk that changed Sami forever.

The Salem Stalker Mystery (2003-2004)
In a shocker, Marlena was revealed to be a serial killer who bumped off several Salem favorites residents who were all alive on the island of Melaswen (spelled “New Salem” backward). Turns out, she was manipulated and gaslighted by Andre DiMera (Thaao Penghlis) to do the “killings” and had no memory of her actions.

The Pier Scene (1991)
This remains Michael Fairman TV’s all-time favorite Deidre Hall moment, which featured some of the best acting in the storied careers of both Hall and Drake Hogestyn.

In the story, a presumed-dead Marlena returns after four years. One foggy night on the pier, John is alone, and Marlena steps out of the fog to reveal herself, and is reunited with the love of her life. You can watch it any year, any decade, and in any moment, and it will have you reaching for the hankies again and again. (best music score fo a soap scene of all-time too!)

Kristen’s Secret Room Reveal (1997)
Marlena was caught in Kristen Blake’s (Eileen Davidson) elaborate web of lies, when she was held hostage in a secret wine cellar/room until John managed to track her down, leading to an iconic on-screen reunion. The classic catfight between Hall and Eileen Davidson was one for the ages.

It should be noted that Maison Blanche, Queen of the Night, Possession, Aremid and Lady in a Cage were all a part of classic DAYS storyline and all featured Hall at the epicenter of it from 1993-1996.

THE RECENT YEARS OF MARLENA

In recent years, DAYS brought back the possession 2.0 storyline under then head writer Ron Carlivati in 2021 where the devil leapt back in Marlena after taking advantage of a frail Doug Williams (the late Bill Hayes)

In 2025, viewers watched the end of the love story of John and Marlena, as John succumbed to injuries sustained in an explosion saving a vial of medication needed to bring Bo (Peter Reckell) back to life. Marlena has been a widow on-screen since June of 2025 as Hall as portrayed the good doctor struggling with her grief and to move on with her life since his death.

One story that never goes away is Stefano DiMera’s (the late Joe Mascolo) obsession with Marlena, his “Queen of the Night.” Even in death, Stefano is toying with her from the great beyond with the mysterious chess set and the missing “pawn,” that he had gifted John and Marlena in his will. The mystery is currently unfolding on all-new episodes of Days of Our Lives.

Tune-in to Days of our Lives on the Monday, June 22 episode as Marlena looks back at her 50 years in Salem.
