‘General Hospital’s’ Steve Burton Shares Reaction to His Lead Actor Daytime Emmy Nomination, ‘It Was to Honor Leslie Charleson’

The 53rd Annual Daytime Emmy Award nominations kicked-off on Monday with the announcements of four major categories including, Outstanding Lead Performer in a Daytime Drama Series — Actor, and among the nominees is General Hospital’s Steve Burton (Jason Morgan).
Burton is already a two-time Daytime Emmy winner in the Supporting Actor category for his roles as GH’s Jason and his turn as Dylan McAvoy on Y&R. However, Steve is yet to win in the Lead Actor category and he has received 11 nominations along the way in his daytime career.
Following the reveal that he is a 2026 Daytime Emmy nominee, he and his GH co-star, podcast co-host and comedy show partner, Bradford Anderson (Spinelli) taped a special edition of their That’s Awesome podcast just featuring Burton’s reaction to the news.

FOR LESLIE CHARLESON
Steve expressed, “I know it’s such a cliche to say, ‘I’m just so honored to be nominated.’ But truly, I’m so grateful to be nominated, so grateful to just be on the show off and on for 30 plus years and to be nominated with the guys in my category. Just to get the opportunity. Frank (Valentini, executive producer, GH) texted me right away. I was just like, ‘Thank you for the opportunity to get to do what I do.'”
Taking in the moment, Burton thanked those who helped him select the material for his nominated reel. “Unless you win, you don’t get to say things. So. I’m going just say a few things: Elizabeth Korte (co-head writer, GH) helped me a lot with the material, (as did) Michelle Henry, who’s a producer on the show, Laura Wright (Carly, GH), and then my wife Michelle (Lundstrom). I believe it was Jill Phelps who told me that when A Martinez felt like he had a great show or great scenes, he would mark it down. So, when Emmy time comes, you have all the show numbers written down, and you don’t have to think about it, because that’s half the battle (finding the material).
Burton explained how meaningful this nomination is for him, because of playing the scenes of Jason losing Monica, and his closeness with the late, great Leslie Charleson.
“The nomination’s an amazing thing, and it’s beautiful, but really it’s to honor Leslie Charleson. A lot of my material was because of her, and how I started on the show as a Quartermaine, it just means a ton,” shared Burton. “Maurice Benard (Sonny, GH) has obviously has been instrumental, and I’ve said it from day one and I’ll shout it from the rooftops. If it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t be here, and to be working with the people that we work with is incredible.”

SHOULD JOHN OLIVER BE NAMED HOST OF THE DAYTIME EMMYS?
During the end of his conversation with Anderson, Steve suggested that the host of the Daytime Emmy should be Last Week Tonight’s John Oliver, who recently guest starred as the head of the WSB named Z on General Hospital, and is soon to show up on Days of Our Lives in a mystery role in August.
Thus far, the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences has not revealed their host for the upcoming ceremony to be held on October 30 in a venue to be named in Hollywood, California.
You can watch Steve sharing his reaction to receiving his 2026 Lead Actor Daytime Emmy nomination below on a special segment on the That’s Awesome podcast.
Now let us know, are you glad that Steve chose scenes surrounding Jason mourning the loss of the woman that raised him, Monica Quartermaine for his Emmy reel? What do you think of John Oliver as a suggestion to host the Daytime Emmys? Weigh-in via the comment section below.

Ugh, another new character, why should I get interested. I loved Daniel Goddard as Cane and they just killed him off. Plus, Y&R lost the #1 spot women 18-49 and still won’t give up any info. I am really disappointed in my 28 year soap. Bring back Daniel as Cane Ashby, no twin or ghost will do.
Thank you.
I couldn’t agree more with Christina! Enough is enough! Bring back our beloved character Cane back to his wife and children…. as a living breathing man, no ghost story, the viewers and there are thousands of them want the REAL thing!.
Desperate CBS???? Worried about you fan base jumping ship??? You should be, we feel like you DO NOT care about what we want!!!! You are a fan based success or failure!! Decide which one you want to be, listen to us or watch us go to ABC or NBC. Unlike you we are NOT afraid and we WILL be heard! All it takes is a press release and a date and that half a million viewers most likely will return!!!
I liked the character of Cane, too, but the last few years of his story have sucked. He’s always propping up Lily when she is in one crisis after another, i.e. cancer, having a baby, modeling woes with Jabot. Watching them together would immediately put my DVR into fast forward mode. Total snooz-fest in my opinion. I feel the same about Malcolm and Sofia’s scenes. Utterly boring.
Y&R does not need new characters, they need vision. Daniel Goddard’s portrayal of Cane Ashby was brilliant. The epic “Cane and Lily “love story was and is magical. The decision to kill Cane in the first week of sweeps defies logic. The viewer was led to believe that this was “Cane’s” story not Colin’s. It is not relevant at this time because the story is dead and there is no longer any need for Colin. Y&R is no longer character driven, it jumps from one plot point to the next. The only consistent thing about Y&R is the fact that it consistently disappoints. The falling ratings , a loss of 707,000 viewers, and a loss of the # 1 spot of the 18 – 49 demos since the killing of Cane tell the story. Bring back Daniel Goddard as Cane Ashby, no twin or ghost.
Thank you
I agree with everything Mary said! The killing of Cane was a bad decision and that ended his story! There really isn’t any need for Colin now. The writers need to start writing for the characters on canvass and Y&R needs to stop bringing in new characters the viewers are not interested or invested in. Y&R needs to bring Daniel Goddard back as Cane alive!
To all of the people saying get rid of Colin – “there’s no need to have him there” blah blah blah…… be patient. It’s clear that they have more in store for this character otherwise he would have been shot right along with Cane. People have been romanticizing this Cane and Lily thing into unbeliveable proportions. They were not a compelling couple, IMO. The storyline was a complete bore up until the climax. For months, I would forward through Lily’s completely ridiculous oblivion to what was happening with Cane and his “buddy” from Australia. She’s as dumb as a box of hair.
The more I think of it, I think that Cane and Blake should have hooked up! Now there’s a compelling storyline! Lily would have really had a reason to cry! 🙂
I can’t believe how stupid the show is becoming, you pair stoopid sharon with ugly adam, the man who kidnapped her son, you have nicholas sleeping around with ugly diane, yuck! And victor, forget about it, he’s a loser, this guy is the worst actor on tv. It seems the writers are lost in translation. Neil hooks up with his brother fiance??? She’s not very attractive with that crazy make-up she’s wearing, those colors are not right for her complexion.
Anything but Shick will make me happy. Plus the guy is hot.
Why does this new guy automatically have to mean no Daniel? He can still come back.
Big mistake getting rid of Cane/Daniel good character and popular actor. The powers that be don’t care what the fans want. Y&R is not even close to a must watch anymore.
just asking—does anyone else feel as i do that victorias hair looks like a worn-out mop from walmart complete with split ends and needs intense conditioning. it is jjust my opinion that her hair is far too long and looks completely out of date for someone her age. get it cut in a shorter bob. it looks like a huge mess. thanks i feel better.
LOL, been thinking the same thing! Some conditioning, a haircut would do her good.
HI THANK YOU FOR YOUR COMMENT REGARDING VICTORIAS HAIR. I WAS BEGINNING TO THINK THAT I WAS THE ONLY ONE THAT THOUGHT IT WAS A MESS!!. FRANKLY, I WOULD GET SOOO WARM HAVING A LONG, THICK HEAD OF HAIR LIKE HERS. SHE NEEDS TO BE UPDATED. WHERE IS HER HAIRDRESSER ?? PERHAPS IT IS A CONTRACT ISSUE THAT SHE MUST ALWAYS HAVE THIS MESS OF HAIR. JUST SAYIN
YES!
I am a bit late on the reply but I just found this site………. I think her hair is a statement of her disheveled life with Billy… you will see it come back into neat and tight when she gets back to Newman…. it is part of her wardrobe… it has been getting wilder by the day…
I agree with all the posts as well that they have no long term planning plot lines… it jumps day to day from one thing to another. I also notice that the story with Sharon and Sam seems to be completely set aside. Is she off on mat leave or something so they filmed months of her and Sam with no interaction with anyone else. It could have been filmed and then clipped in as they need it to make her appear present… Same with Tucker in the coma…. These people have lives to live and vacations to take. On Global most recently the actor who plays Esther said they film daily one show where most other soaps take a week of filming for one hour. Like the night time soaps they need more momentary action with an overall soap feel. Today’s viewer is more savvy… especially the 18 – 45 year olds.
Hope he stays on the show. Love him. Such a cutie.
Talking about Sam
I hope Sam becomes a regular of Young and the Restless, he plays a nice guy and Sharon needs someone different and more permanent.
