This week it’s Criminal Minds star Shemar Moore’s (Malcolm Winters) highly anticipated return to the soap that started it all for him … CBS’ The Young and the Restless.  As previously revealed, during his two-episode appearance on September 10th and 11th, Malcolm returns to help his elder brother Neil (Kristoff St. John) in his time of need, since Neil can’t quite get a grip on the fact that he is blind, and it may be permanent.

As long time fans of the series know, Malcolm and Neil have had some tense moments in their relationship, even though underneath it all there is “brotherly love”, there relationship has had some rocky roads  to travel including both gents past with the same woman … Drucilla (Victoria Rowell)!

In an interview with TV Guide Magazine’s Michael Logan, Shemar reveals that he and on-screen brother, Kristoff St. John, felt some of the Y&R scenes in the scripts needed a bit of reworking!

Shemar detailed: “The original script did not pay enough attention to the Winters family history — they had us discussing all this more recent stuff Malcolm didn’t know anything about — so I got on the phone with Kristoff and we worked out a few ideas. We then went to speak with Mrs. Phelps (executive producer Jill Farren Phelps) and expressed our concerns and she was great. We were able to get in some great references to the past that I think the longtime audience will really appreciate. I hope and believe the fans will like what they witness, but I think they’re going to wish that many other questions and topics had been addressed. But, hey, the silver lining is that Malcolm can always come back to Genoa City because Shemar would love to come back. (Laughs) Just as soon as I de-stress!”

In the interview, Shemar reveals that there is a lot of “preachy” dialog from Malcolm in his scenes with Neil stating:  “42 pages worth of preachin’! The audience is gonna be, like, ‘It was good to see Shemar but, damn, he wouldn’t shut up!'”

So, do you think Shemar’s return will be satisfying? Whet your appetite for more of Moore in Genoa City in the future?  Share your thoughts below!

Not suprised about the writing issue- past history is re-written and disregarded on a daily basis on Y&R now. I’m excited to see Malcom again, and can only hope that the show will improve in the future!

See, even the actors know you got to stick with their characters history…rewriting history too often can hurt these shows and long time fans who know the history will get disgruntle and start tuning out when these show start looking and sounding unfamiliar to them…you do need to bring in newbies to refreshen a show but you dont change its history if you dont want to loose your most loyal and devoted fans…ive seen it happen and its one of the reasons we only have for soaps left!!!

jimh..
I do not see history being changed as some whine about it..
History is always the core/there..
It is added onto and not changing the past..

Back in the day lol
there is always the hidden son or daughter that was not in the old days but now here is her son.. her history is still in intact and now new history is being created by adding onto the past.. what was still is always will be
History is not changed/rewritten, it is added onto 🙂
there is always the unknown in a soap, things we didn’t know then that we know now..

the writers did not rewrite history, the writers just kept all current –
Shemar Moore and Kristoff St. John didn’t like that it wasn’t enough but KSJ always gets pouty if he doesn’t like something lol

Shemar: “The original script did not pay ‘enough <— keyword, attention to the Winters family history — they had us discussing all this more recent stuff '''

no changing history there 🙂

It’s the same as I said on the post of Brad Elliot returning to help phyllis in a “twist”… gag …on his original role. You have two days to bring Malcom back and you had to pay Shemar to do it. Take the ratings gimmick and turn it into retro gold. The two days should solely focus on the Winters and their dysfunctional family dynamic. Heck..the two days could have waited and been paired with Brad Elliot’s helping hand to phyllis which both situations could have shed a SPOTLIGHT on GC’s back history from beginning (Brad) to the first prominent African American family of longevity in soaps (the Winters) what a waste of time and opportunity. At least Shemar saw where things were heading and put the kibosh on some scenes or at least the tone of them. He should be preachy to an extent but over the current state of affairs while rehashing the old. They’re brothers..they got through the cold medicine debacle…they have a lot to talk about…and address…lost opportunities at every turn…

Well I applaud JFP for listening and letting them change it. I have not seen it yet on my DVR but I am going to start giving JFP some slack I do not think she wants Y&R to fail that would put her out of a job. They are writing for the Winters again and that is more then LML & MAB did. Let’s all make a pact and start looking for the positive in our soaps instead of the negative.

Shemar coming back for 2 days and having so little air time is not a big deal ..
It will be fun to see Shemar again and that’s about it ..
So- Will Shemar’s return be satisfying? = No, not really.
But! it will be interesting and a fun event ..

(I FF most of Neil and I will hold my finger back to see Shemar 🙂 !!)

Malcolm and Drucilla made that part of the show entertaining. Without them, not much to watch, so I agree there. Neil, Lily, Devon, Hillary and Cane have the collective personality of a dial tone.

I love the way you think, Jared. They are just marionettes …mechanical….disinterested in their craft, and it shows in their performance. They go through the motions without EMOTION. And, this new development with Neil’s blindness just blows my mind. Why? Where areTPTB going with this?
Something else that bewilders me is Devon…no matter how old he is, he still looks 12… Actually, my mom said he hasn’t changed much since his FAMILY MATTERS days. The puppeteers try too hard trying to match him up with a girl. Everyone looks too mature in comparison…not too old, just too mature. He seems so out of place, IMO. Will this guy ever find his niche?

Funny how you change the rules in accordance about which soap you’re speaking

Replying here: you said to me you dont see history being changed…well you obviously are very young and dont really know the shows history…if the shows own actors like Moore says the show wasnt focusing on the history between his character Malcom and KSJs Neil and went to JFP to make script changes, then this is proof that those ‘whiny fans’ were right when they complain that the show doesnt stay focused on its rich history!!!

Moore did not say ”
” wasn’t focusing on the history between his character Malcom and KSJs Neil ”
he said-
Shemar: “The original script did not pay ‘enough <— keyword, attention to the Winters family history — they had us discussing all this more recent stuff '''

he said they didn't pay '''enough''' attention to family history in their point of view….

so yes, they did put in/wrote in family History it just was not enough for them/mostly not enough for KSJ, and that is not surprising for him to whine…

Malcom was not brought back for a trip down years of memories to act out in two days with only so much time on screen..he was brought back to help and support his brother, and of course the writers wrote in some memories, but is was not '''enough'' for them.

also- quote-
''Shemar reveals that he and on-screen brother, Kristoff St. John, felt some of the Y&R scenes in the scripts needed a bit of reworking!'''

— ''a bit of reworking'' does not say the history was left out 🙂

(not a word of rewriting history was said except by some cantankerous fans who have yet to see what was written that was not enough in the two's minds because it will still be there apparently, just done the way the 2 prefer it… LOL 🙂 ..

References to the past is still about history which was missing from the script…Shemar did say the script didnt pay attention to Winters family history…so its still about the lack of HISTORY in the script…these shows do often change history…sometimes it works and often it doesnt…many soaps lost focus on their rich history and made too many disasterous changes and thats one of the big reason most are gone…avoiding the history of what went on in the past between the Winters brothers to some is a form of rewriting history…not talking about it even briefly makes it seem to some that those things never happened even if we know they actually did!!!

Well, Su00, I shall follow suit and hold my finger back as well and just ask you to read between the lines.

Well gentlemen 🙂
I’d bet the newer viewers of the past 10 yrs really dont give a crapola of their past LOL 🙂
but it seems soaps are supposed to do that/relive stuff.. And that is good sometimes, yes it is..
I thought it was more than ridiculous to have to pay homage to Dead Cassi every year to celebrate her death for a week, for a decade!!
.. ohh and her birthdays, and school days, her jewelry days, and on and on it went.. that was overkill of ”’history” !!
Nothing like a trip through the soap opera graveyard for decade 😉

Y&R is a 36 minute soap (rest is comercials) .
Out of the 36 minutes how much screen time will SM have???
SM said a ”bit” of ”scene reworking” , no big deal commonly done, hope they get all their ideas into time allowed..

It will be good.. SM said–” that they worked out a few ideas..
maybe they want to add in one of their favorite moments or some such thing.

lol Harry..
No need to read between the lines, I just follow along 🙂

jimh..
It will be better than you expect it to be 🙂 betcha !

Thrilled about having Shemar back and his being open to recurring appearances. I’m pleased that the controversial show runner has enough respect for the actors and the history of the show. That’s a refreshing change from LML and MAB, who had zero respect for the history and trajectory of the show’s characters and stories. On another note, it’d be neat to have the recurring Tracy or Nina paired up with Malcolm. Let them get their grooves back!

He can always come back. I hope that this is the beginning of more appearances.

Well if it is, you can bet that he’ll be snagging Hillary soon. The two brothers can’t seem to keep out of the pants of the other’s woman.

I guess it depends on the context of the conversation. As a long time viewer I have already seen these two brothers deal with their issues around Dru– I really don’t need a rehash of ancient history just for a stroll down memory lane if that is the only reason for bringing it up.

I would be more interested in them dealing with Sophia–how Neil married her when he didn’t love her — one would think Malcolm might be wanting to bring Neil to task for that one. He did give up Sophia so she could be with her baby’s father Neil.

Not against the history angle, just hope it is woven into the fabric of the story in an organic way; in a way that newer viewers will not feel left out of the loop and long time viewers like me aren’t left with a bad case of deju vu

Well I saw the first appearance today, and I am pleased with how they did. My misgivings were for not— nice blend of old and new– looking forward to tomorrow– too bad it was such a short stint, but it gave the Winter’s story line a shot in the arm.

In the wrestling business its called ‘Stroke.” Shemar has this since he is stepping down from his prime time hit to come back to his roots for two days and puts his two cents in on what he and Neil would or would not be talking about. Besides Stroke, it shows how awful the writers are that they cannot even write a character for TWO days! I wonder who else on the show cringes when they see their script but are NOT allowed to run to Jill?

It’s all about the the two- what Shemar and KSJ want, how they want it to be..
They think the 2 days it is a big deal and they want it the way they see it ..
I can see that happening..

What was said-..
”Y&R scenes in the scripts needed a bit of reworking!”’

Perhaps they want to add a moment or they want something portrayed differently to their liking…Perhaps they are just having a good time reworking whatever scene because they want to have their moment ..
And it was said .. ”’scene” reworking scenes, not history…
Why some a harping about rewriting history is silly, not even SM and KSJ are saying that.. 🙂

Interesting comment about having the rewrite the scene. These writers seem so concerned with putting their imprint on the show that they ignore its history. This is something that long-time viewers notice every day. It is funny that a veteran actor from the show returns for a couple of days (thus, a couple of scripts) and immediately notices this.

Jean Passanante did the same thing on AWTW. She seemed so hellbent on making a character she created, Janet, a major player in Oakdale and paid little attention to the details of the show’s past. Look where all that wound up — The cancellation of a show that had been on the air for 54 years.

How in the world does someone like Passanante, a veteran “writer” whose resume includes a slew of long-running soaps cancelled while she is working her magical pen, manage to land a writing job on one of the few remaining shows??? This woman’s present writing career should be filling out customer orders at the Waffle House.

And then having the orders double checked by a real waitress…LMAO

Oh, I can’t stand all the negative Nelly know-it-all’s commenting on here!! I’m super excited Shemar is going to be on the show for a couple of days, and he’s welcome to make an appearance any time! He’s awesome, the show is awesome, and I have no complaints about anything .. other than what I said in my first sentence. Life’s too short for that crap! Have a lovely day everyone! xxxxx

I am excited too, Carol but when people point out their concerns, it doesn’t rain on my parade and it should not rain on yours either.
Shemar Moore is beautiful–does he ever age? He must have a self portrait in the attic doing it for him.
I hope he sees what is going on and asks Neil,”Can’t you see what is going on between your son and your wife? What are you, blind?”

The winters family is seriously hurting right now, i liked last year when they introduced leslie and her bro tylers family, the michaelsons!
I used to love neil but lately he s been trying too hard! his whole forcing leslie to marry him and then jumping on hilary who s half his age and who was stalikng his family is off.
Devon is whack for creeping on his dads woman, especially since his adopted dad neil pretty much took him out of the gutter!
Lily is hopelessly entitled and spoiled , shes much intresting now that she s catfighting with hilary!
I want to see more of the Michaelsons interact with the winters! show a conflicted Leslie who s a spitfire Attorney and what made her marry the doctor so fast instead of Neil and her bro Tyler who is cocky and damn hot! Tyler and Lily said they would remain friends. Have Lily turn to tyler when she finds out once again canes been hiding something from her so important, like hilary and devons affair!!

I am grateful to Shemar that he led the charge into JFP’s office. I have no doubt that the return would have been about Hilary just as they made Katherine’s memorial all about Hilary. TPTB are pathetic and need to be fired. Start with Angelica McDaniel on down. End with a clean sweep of the writer’s room.

Shemar did not lead a charge into JFP’s office ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, lol
It most likely was KJS at the head when they went to talk with her ….

Quote;
” Shemar Moore’ and on-screen brother, Kristoff St. John, felt some of the Y&R scenes in the scripts needed a bit of reworking!”

……..scenes <<………………in the script……need a bit if reworking.
Reworking scenes is no big deal 🙂 Actors do ask for that to be done..

It will be fun to see SM, again..!!!!! .I'd bet there will be a flashback! 🙂

ROFLMBO! Bless your heart!

Shemar spoke a mouthful re the writing. Surprised Leona, I mean Jill, went for it.

So good to see the temporary return of Malcolm…I wish he’d stay and Neil would leave , taking Hillucifer with him….however, I get to see SM on CRIMINAL MINDS, so I’m happy with that.
I must say that I am so ecstatic seeing Meredith Baxter. I love her…and, she looks beautiful…fantastic, actually. …hope she’s a permanent fixture in Genoa City.

Christel Khalil Reveals She Almost Quit Acting After ‘That’s So Raven’ Audition, But Then Came ‘The Young and the Restless’

The Young and the Restless fan favorite, Christel Khalil (Lily Winters) is the special guest on this week’s edition of Soapy Hosted by Rebecca Budig and Greg Rikaart which dropped today on Tuesday, June 23rd.

During the interview with Rebecca and Greg, Khalil who had played Lily Winters on-screen since August of 2002, nearly 24 years with the CBS soap, shared how early on her teenage acting career, she was ready to call it quits in show business, after a heartbreaking audition for the lead of a new Disney Channel sitcom, which later turned out to be the hit seres, That’s So Raven, starring Raven-Symoné which ran for four seasons from 2003-2007.

Christel recalled what happened. “I was 14 and I had always auditioned for all these Disney projects. So I auditioned for That’s So Raven, it was between me and Raven-Symoné and it was called at the time Absolutely Psychic,” explained Khalil. “The character was this girl who had psychic ability, but then when Raven got the role, they named the title of the show after her.”

Photo: CBS

HOW A BROTHERLY TALK CHANGED THE COURSE OF CHRISTEL’S CAREER

Reliving the disappointment to Greg and Rebecca, Christel explained, “I lost that part and I was just so devastated, because for the network call there were 20 people in the room watching me, and I just have always had such performance anxiety. I just completely bombed the audition and it was terrible. So, I was just devastated. I was actually going to quit acting and then I got the final call for The Young and The Restless and I wasn’t going to go.”

It was Khalil’s brother, who actually got her to reconsider, and if he hadn’t, we would not have our Lily Winters in Genoa City! Christel recounted, “I was like, ‘You know what? I’m done. I don’t want to do this anymore. I’m just going to hang out with my friends.’ I was just devastated. My brother, who is seven years older than me, and he had quit acting at the same age that I was at that time. He said to me, ‘I promise you, I actually really regret quitting. Just go on this audition and if you don’t get it, you can quit.'”

Christel’s screen-test for the role of Lily was actually with the late, great, Kristoff St. John who would play her father Neil (Later it was revealed to Lily, that Neil’s brother, Malcolm Winters was her bio-dad).

Photo: CBS

ACTING WAS EASY WITH THE LATE KRISTOFF ST. JOHN

“So, I went (to test for Lily) and I remember the screen-test was with Kristoff St. John. It was just so easy to act with him because he’s just so there. I remember just being on set, and that was my first time there for a screen-test where you were actually on set. I had never experienced that before. It was my first time being with an actor and  having makeup done, which just helps you really be able to do your best work.”

Recalling the screen-test with the St. John, Khalil, “It was where I had to be emotional ( in the scene) and I always had issues being emotional at auditions. But I was there with him, it just came, and it happened. It was natural and I felt so good and it was amazing. It stands out in my mind a lot.”

You can check out the full Soapy conversation with Christel Khalil where she also discusses juggling motherhood, marital life, and the demands of soap operas.

Fan can listen to weekly episodes of Soapy on Audacy or wherever podcasts are available, and can watch full video episodes weekly on the CBS =Brand YouTube Channel. Whether a lifelong fan or discovering the genre for the first time, SOAPY offers a fresh, fun behind-the-scenes look at the stories – and storytellers – that define daytime drama.

Now let us know, over the years what had been your favorite Lily Winters story on Y&R as played by Christel Khalil? What did you think of of Christell’s recollection where she was up for the lead of “That’s So Raven” as a teenager, before it was even titled that? Let us know via the comment section.

Deidre Hall Marks 50 Years as ‘Days of Our Lives’ Dr. Marlena Evans

Published

on

By

If you have ever tuned-in to the soap opera genre over the last 50 years, and witnessed some of the greatest romances, drama, classic and outlandish storylines of all-time, you would have seen Deidre Hall smack dab in the middle of it as longtime Salem heroine, Dr. Marlena Evans.

It was 50 years on this date, June 21, 1976 that Hall first appeared on DAYS on NBC which was its home for 57 years before it moved to its current streaming platform on Peacock in September of 2022.

In Hall’s first episode she was introduced as a psychiatrist treating Mickey Horton (John Clarke) at Bayview Sanitarium after he suffered a complete mental breakdown. Mickey learned that his brother Bill Horton (Edward Mallory) was the biological son of Mike Horton (Wesley Eure) with his wife Laura (Susan Flannery) and that he had been lied to for years and years. From that moment on, the rest is television and soap opera history. Days of Our Lives put Hall front and center.

Photo: NBC

There were so many heartbreaking and shocking story twists involving the beloved Marlena. One of the first was the historic crib death of baby DJ (Don Jr.) in 1980, Marlena’s infant son with Don Craig (Jed Allan). The story had never been told on daytime television and Hall’s performances received accolades from TV critics to fans when Deidre received thousands of letters from grieving mothers who had gone through the same thing in their own lives.

DAYS also brought Deidre’s twin sister, Andrea Hall Lovell to the show as her on-screen sister Samantha, who had a grudge and even locked Marlena up in a sanitarium and took her place! Fast-forward and in 1982, DAYS launched the Salem Strangler story where everyone believed Marlena was his next victim, only it turned out to be Samatha. Jake Kositchek (played by Jack Coleman) was revealed to be the actual serial killer.

Later, Deidre would assume the role of Marlena’s look-alike, Hattie Adams in 2004, once played by her sister, Andrea. Over the years, Hattie has come back to Salem and caused trouble giving Hall a chance to play a different type of character, then the always upstanding Marlena.

Photo: JPI

THE LOVES OF MARLENA

Deidre Hall struck gold with all her leading men: from the late Jed Allan, to Wayne Northrop as Roman Brady, and of course, her enduring love story with the late John Black played by the iconic Drake Hogestyn. In fact, Marlena’s 1986 wedding to John (who was believed to be Roman at the time) remains a favorite of fans to this day.

TOP MARLENA STORYLINES OF ALL-TIME

While the list is long, here are several that were some of the memorable during Deidre’s five decades in Salem!

The Possession (1994- 1995)
Considered one of the most ambiguous, outlandish and unforgettable story arcs in soap opera history, then Days of Our Lives head writer, James Reilly went there! Marlena was possessed by the devil! That included; the demonic eyes, hissing at father John (Black) the priest, morphing into creatures, and the classic levitating in her bed! It became a cultural phenomenon and cemented Deidre Hall’s status as a daytime television legend. Just ask Ryan Gosling!

Photo:JPI

The Affair with John Black (1993)
John and Marlena’s forbidden love could not be denied and they had passionate affair, while she was still married to the real Roman. Problem was her daughter, Sami (Alison Sweeney) caught her mother having sex with John on a desk that changed Sami forever.

The Salem Stalker Mystery (2003-2004)
In a shocker, Marlena was revealed to be a serial killer who bumped off several Salem favorites residents who were all alive on the island of Melaswen (spelled “New Salem” backward). Turns out, she was manipulated and gaslighted by Andre DiMera (Thaao Penghlis) to do the “killings” and had no memory of her actions.

The Pier Scene (1991)
This remains Michael Fairman TV’s all-time favorite Deidre Hall moment, which featured some of the best acting in the storied careers of both Hall and Drake Hogestyn.

In the story, a presumed-dead Marlena returns after four years. One foggy night on the pier, John is alone, and Marlena steps out of the fog to reveal herself, and is reunited with the love of her life. You can watch it any year, any decade, and in any moment, and it will have you reaching for the hankies again and again. (best music score fo a soap scene of all-time too!)

Photo: NBC

Kristen’s Secret Room Reveal (1997)
Marlena was caught in Kristen Blake’s (Eileen Davidson) elaborate web of lies, when she was held hostage in a secret wine cellar/room until John managed to track her down, leading to an iconic on-screen reunion. The classic catfight between Hall and Eileen Davidson was one for the ages.

It should be noted that Maison Blanche, Queen of the Night, Possession, Aremid and Lady in a Cage were all a part of classic DAYS storyline and all featured Hall at the epicenter of it from 1993-1996.

THE RECENT YEARS OF MARLENA

In recent years, DAYS brought back the possession 2.0 storyline under then head writer Ron Carlivati in 2021 where the devil leapt back in Marlena after taking advantage of a frail Doug Williams (the late Bill Hayes)

In 2025, viewers watched the end of the love story of John and Marlena, as John succumbed to injuries sustained in an explosion saving a vial of medication needed to bring Bo (Peter Reckell) back to life. Marlena has been a widow on-screen since June of 2025 as Hall as portrayed the good doctor struggling with her grief and to move on with her life since his death.

Photo: JPI

One story that never goes away is Stefano DiMera’s (the late Joe Mascolo) obsession with Marlena, his “Queen of the Night.” Even in death, Stefano is toying with her from the great beyond with the mysterious chess set and the missing “pawn,” that he had gifted John and Marlena in his will. The mystery is currently unfolding on all-new episodes of Days of Our Lives.

Tune-in to Days of our Lives on the Monday, June 22 episode as Marlena looks back at her 50 years in Salem.

Share your congratulations to Deidre Hall for this incredible 50-year milestone as Dr. Marlena Evans on Days of Our Lives in the comment section. Then let us know, what is your all-time favorite storyline or moment in the life of Marlena over the past 5 decades? And, just for kicks, and to celebrate this amazing milestone, here is Marlena levitating below circa Christmas Eve 1994.
