My best soap of all time wasn’t even a choice but it should be – PORT CHARLES!
no, DARK SHADOWS! 😀
Y&R true fan forever.
No General Hospital… ..
ALL MY CHILDREN !!
My favorite soaps of all time were no.1, Dark Shadows, no.2, The Edge of Night, no.3, Another World(1970s), no. 4, Days OF Our Lives, no. 5, ties with Santa Barbara and Passions, no.6, General Hospital, no. 7, ties with ATWT, AMC and OLTL, no. 8, Ryans Hope, no. 9, The Doctors, no.1O, ties with Guilding Light, Strange Paradise, and the British imports of Upstairs, Downstairs, Coranation Street, and now Downtown Abbey…i also like Somerset, Return To Peyton Place, Sunset Beach, Love of Life and Search For Tomorrow, Generations, Bright Promise, The Secret Storm and a few others…i always loved the… Read more »
I loved most of these myself & have watched soaps my entire life! Do you remember the one called Where the Heart is? (late ’60s)
And what about Love is A Many Splendored Thing with Leslie Charleson & Donna Mills!
I loved that show back in the day.
I did briefly see Love Is A Many Splendored Thing but i never watched Where The Heart Is…back in those days i was always switching channels to watch soaps with so many opposite each other…no vcr or cable to record to watch later…but the 60s and 70s ill always consider the best era for soaps…the stories were far better and so many soaps to choose…i also watched the funniest soap of all that i forgot to put in my top ten list, Mary Hartman, that also should be at no.2 for me!!!
“Dark Shadows,” but it didn’t even make the bracket! Here’s hoping “Edge of Night” will pull an upset!
I personally believe that General Hospital should be voted Best Soap of All Time, with All My Children a close second!!!!!!
I agree with you
Thanks, Janet, glad you like GH and AMC also!!!!!
I would pick As The World Turns. ATWT always had something juicy for everyone to sink their teeth into. Whether it was Luke and Noah, funny lines from Henry, drama from Carly and Jack, or even the many back from the dead storylines that the character of James Steinbeck had. I only watched ATWT from 2008 to 2010. But I could see that this wonderful and powerful soap opera had something for everyone!
ATWT…..there will never be a soap that had everything…& some of the best actors around.& the first gay storyline with Lukes’story.A strong sense of family, friendships, love, heartache, villians, kpokie characters, etc.I still miss it .It will always be #1 with me
One Life to Live!
Yes !!
OLTL
AMC
GH
RH
Y&R
Guiding Light!!!!!
General Hospital and Days1
OLTL is and always will be #1
1. GH
2. GL
3. DAYS
4. ATWT
5. Port Charles
Y&R pay attention as a former fan ,you better start doing whats best for the soap opera ,if not you will go down the drain, and i was a hard core fan ,for many reaon! Am truly sad of the events of the past few weeks ,
Days of our Lives has honored the legacy of Bill Bell more than Y&R has!
Lately, DOOL puts me to sleeps… I love GH
To be voted out and being the # 1 for how many years ,you would of think wouldnt go in the first round… Pay attention executives of the show its the fans telling you something and to the writters for the love of God pick a flipping story line and stick with it ,how do i know since i stop watching it? Read the twitters and fans letters
weeeeellllllll
The Young & Restless has always had the most viewers but has never been the best soap ..
General Hospital #1 ….
Yes General Hospital # 1
That’s a very tough choice. Have loved, and lost, so many in my lifetime. Dark Shadows was my first soap love, but OLTL is the one I considered “my soap” for the longest and most consistently. Really tough, but makes me realize how lucky I have been to enjoy so much great entertainment over a lifetime. Daytime and primetime, soaps will ALWAYS be part of my experience.
Thanks for bringing back those memories, Mr. Fairman.
I have to say;
The Edge of Night
Ryans Hope
Guilding Light
Search For Tomorrow
The Secret Storm
and many others, HUH never seen any..
Think my great grandma had liked them or some such thing
good grief who would even recall watching them..
The newer viewers, past 20yrs, would have never even heard of 70% of those soaps to vote on them LOL 🙁
I recall them but then again im an old geezer who has watched soaps since 1964!…lol, you really missed some of the best moments in daytime…glad i was there!!!
I recall all of those to some degree and I’m not an old geezer. I still fall in the 18-49 demo. Glad I was there too. Especially for The Edge of Night and Ryan’s Hope. I can still hear their opening themes in my head as I type their names. lol.
General Hospital, followed by Another World and Days.
One Life To Live (best soap), GH (second best), AMC(third best).. I started watching these three soaps with my Mom and never changed. And still watch GH and don’t watch any other soaps but this one now… I always preferred LLanview,PA…
I miss our friends in Llanview.
Had to reply here to you about Edge Of Night…i dont know if you have gone on utube or not but someone has created some really interesting newer openings for E.O.N. of what it might be like had the show been on in 2006, 2008, and 2010…i dont know if i got those years right but they should be easy to find…if you havent seen them check it out…Edge is a soap id like to see one of the networks revive as a primetime series!!!(By the way ive long passed that 18 to 49 demo but i guess men never… Read more »
General Hospital vs. The Bold and The Beautiful. With General Hospital crowned as the Best Soap
ATWT and DAYS!
As the world turns!
Guiding Light forever!
I can’t decide between GL and ATWT. I would be happy if either one of them was voted best soap. I watched them for more years than I want to say. 🙂
Bizarre that the two currently highest rated shows are doing the worst here.
Hands down General Hospital is the best Soap Opera of all-time! No question!
A timeless classic…Days of our Lives…The sands continue to trickle.
Hands down best was All My Children, followed by As the World Turns and Ryan’s Hope!
AMC. OLTL. B/B. RYAN’S HOPE.
THE #1 SOAP WAS & IS ONE LIFE TO LIVE
Ditto! Llanview, PA. !
I agree!
This is so hard. Growing up I watched whatever whoever I was with watched, i.e. my great-grandmother loved Days, my grandmother loved ATWT, Mama watched OLTL, my great-aunt GL, you get the picture. I watched & loved all of them. In the 80s, I was ABC, switched to CBS in the 90s & damned if I didn’t watch everything from 2001 to date! Hard to juggle but I did it & I miss the ones that we’ve lost.
ATWT and I am NOT referring to the later years with Luke, Janet and the rest. I am thinking of the decades of the trials and tribulations of the Hughes, the Stewarts, and the Snyders with healthy doses of the scheming and selfish actions of Lisa and Lucinda.
As the World Turns was the top-rated soap opera for many, many years.
Why do media people always pit soaps against each other as if there has to be a competition? The best soap is whatever soap you most enjoy watching, plain and simple. I have watched many over the years, and I had my favorites, but I never thought one soap was better over the other– and this particular “contest” is pointless because you could get a totally different results if certain soaps were pitted against a different soap in the match ups. This will not determine the all time greatest soap just like dancing with stars doesn’t determine the best dancer–
Good point and well stated, Mary.
My all time favorite is ALL MY CHILDREN but that doesn’t mean just because I don’t have time to follow each show that I think one is better than another. I currently watch Days because at least it is dished out in true Soap fashion.
#1 is As The Wold Turns followed by General Hospital, then All My Children, and finally Guiding Light. Days of Our Lives comes in fifth.
General Hospital, without a doubt….. I love Dante
The Edge of Night.
#1. As the World Turns
#2. Days of OUR Lives
#3. All My Children
#4. Another World
5. Guiding Light
The poll is flawed. After Day 2, you can see the pattern of fans voting the other strongest shows out of their brackets. YR was taken out on Day 1, GH on Day 2. You’ll most likely see the disgruntled GH fans vote against Days today.
A lot of soaps didn’t even get put into the brackets.
The biggest system flaw is that you can vote several hundred times a day, again using those votes against other potential bracket winners.
Silly.
Y&R is flawed. Ask Eileen Davidson which soap is the all time best…Days of our Lives.
Oh 4evah girl, you back again…
Firstly congrats to Days for being picked up. You’ll be able to watch for another couple of years! Did you see YR will be on at least thru 2017? I bet that puts some bounce in your step!
And I’m sure ED is as thrilled as I am that she’s back on Days. Although we both know since she got her start on YR back in ’82, that she’ll always love her first home.
Enjoy 2014.
I am a man, a man I am. A man that loves to see Eileen flourish on a show worthy of her talent, a talent to big to be wasted on a show that is sinking. Y&R has high numbers and low values in front of and behind the camera. DAYS will showcase her talent in a few roles if need be. The fans will be mesmerized once again!!! DAYS scores again!!! Join us.
You am man, hear you roar! Follow The Path! Follow The Path! (Bad grammar intentional)
-Ian Ward
ALL MY CHILDREN
Y&R has always been my favourite & still is.
So as for my all time favorites I’ll go with YR, ATWT, BB, and Days (up until about 77/78)
Other great shows over the years are Somerset, The Doctors, Secret Storm, Another World, Love of Life, Edge of Night, Guiding Light, and Search For Tomorrow.
And since they strayed too far from the genre at times, I have to name Passions, General Hospital, Port Charles, Sunset Beach and sometimes Days as the worst. Sorry but soap opera (for me) is not talking dolls, Ice Princesses, and aliens and possessions. I guess throw Dark Shadows into that as well.
i think it’s hilarious that 3 of the final 4 are off the air….
Me too. And the last one that’s not has the lowest ratings of the four.
Oh my gosh was there ever a better soap than ” Another World” I was a loyal viewer until it went off the air. Once the wonderful Douglas Watson (Mac Cory) died in real life the show just didn’t have the same feeling.
Old as the world turns and guiding light— take your pick…
