Stephen Nichols and Mary Beth Evans Interview – Days of our Lives – 42nd Annual Daytime Emmys Red Carpet

Days of our Lives returning iconic star Stephen Nichols (Patch) and his long-time scene partner Mary Beth Evans (Kayla) chatted with Michael Fairman on the red carpet at the 42nd Annual Daytime Emmys. Stephen and Mary Beth weighed-in on the excitement on the DAYS set with invigorated storytelling heading into the series 50th anniversary, being back working together and the enduring love story of Patch and Kayla, and the actors longtime friendship with each other, and more!
Thank you Michael! Loved it! Loved SN and MBE’s excitement, hopefulness and belief in the writing! AWESOME, AWESOME, AWESOME!
No couple can compare to Steve & Kayla. Best supercouple of all time! I’m thrilled they’ll be back on our screens!
Thanks so much for interviewing them, Michael!
Best news ever! Cannot wait to see Steve & Kayla back on my screen. So looking forward to the 50th and my all time favorites Stephen Nichols and Mary Beth Evans.
Wonderful! So great to see Stephen and Mary Beth together again. And I am officially excited about the story after seeing this. I wasn’t sure what to expect by way of story and the writing given how poorly handled that was during Patch’s previous return years ago but to hear that Stephen and Mary Beth are praising this story and the writing, has me now doing a happy dance. They are the best couple ever on daytime and I can’t wait to see them back onscreen.
Love Patch. He is the best bar NONE
But have yet to hear he is under contract!
Corday do NOT mess this up.
So nice to see Stephen and Mary Beth, and to hear their thoughts on how things are currently behind the scenes. The writers are on the floor. The writing’s good. I mean, really?
It must be better than many of us are used to at the moment because Stephen and Mary Beth don’t usually say a lot if the writing’s substandard, meaning they focus on other things…like how much fun they’re having together or how much fun it is to be with the cast, but they don’t say much else…or if they do talk, their feelings are kinda clear, one way or the other.
So, the writers must be trying. There must be true effort out there at the moment, and I’m glad. Time will tell if we like the stories, but if there’s some honest enthusiasm, that must mean the writing’s at least decent. I hope.
On Steve and Kayla…
I waited for a long time to see if Kayla would get a story on her own. That didn’t happen and I was disappointed. I would have been happy to see her move forward with her life in Steve’s absence.
Of course, it’s hard to think Kayla would or could be as happy with another fella as she has been with Steve. Granted, they’ve obviously had their struggles during their time in Africa, but that love they shared didn’t just disappear. Here’s hoping whatever’s been wrong can and will be resolved…NOT in a day or two, but in an honest to goodness, solid relationship story, full of twists and turns and stops and starts that make sense.
Thank you, Michael Fairman, for this interview.
Thank you, Days, for bringing Stephen back.
Thank you, Stephen and Mary Beth for still being willing to play these roles so we can see Steve and Kayla together again.
Though I must confess that I have a weakness for Stefan Cassadine, I will take Stephen Nichols anyway I can get him. He looks sexy as ever! So good to see you Stephen, back in daytime. 🙂
It’s becoming a reality!!!
Look forward to having Patch back and some Kayla and Patch! The show needs this!

Jen Lilley on Days of our Lives’ Theresa Recast Decision: “It’s a Little Befuddling, But I Still Am Really Grateful That I Got to Go Back.”

Now that the word is out that Days of our Lives star, Emily O’Brien, will be taking over the role of Theresa Donovan from Jen Lilley, fans of the Peacock streaming soap opera are wondering just how the show plans to unveil O’Brien as the recast Theresa, and how she will exit her current role as Gwen.
Meanwhile, Jen Lilley, who had appeared on DAYS as Theresa on and off since 2013, has been speaking to media outlets about what went down behind the scenes in the turn of events that led her part to be recast midstream of her most recent story arc.
Speaking with PEOPLE, Lilley shared that she was under the impression that DAYS was going to fit 12 weeks of episodes into the 4 weeks she gave the show for her availability to be back at the soap opera. Jen wanted to return to film scenes relating to the memorial service of Victor Kiriakis, because of her close bond with the late, John Aniston.

Jen noted that she went to then co-executive producer, Albert Alarr, and asked why she received less scripts than expected. That is when she learned someone else was going to be taking over the role. She asked, “You told me Theresa’s going to do X, Y, and Z, but I just got the schedule for Monday, and it’s only this one script. Is Theresa still going to do that?”
Lilley says that Alarr responded with, “Theresa’s still going to do all of that. It’s just we’re going to go ahead and do it with another actress.’ That’s how I found out.”
It was at that time, according to Lilley, she asked who would be replacing her and learned it was DAYS cast member, Emily O’Brien. Alarr informed her it would be Emily moving over from her role as Gwen Rizczech. Jen shared she was further confused because they wanted Theresa to be blonde and Emily is a brunette. That was addressed, when she learned O’Brien would be donning a blonde wig for the part.

In wrapping up her time on DAYS, Jen said, “I think Emily drew the shortest straw, honestly. I was like, ‘That is the worst thing you could possibly do to a recast is be like, we’re going to wig you and make you just walk through fire for eight weeks.’ I don’t know whether it was a budgetary thing or a scheduling thing where they just couldn’t work the schedule out so everybody could do it. I don’t know their reasoning. It’s a little befuddling, but I still am really grateful that I got to go back.”
Now it remains to be seen, just how long O’Brien will play Gwen. Is it for the short planned arc of Theresa? Will it be longer? Will Lilley be back? All we can say is, play close attention to the Friday, October 6th and Monday, October 9th episodes of Days of our Lives.
