The Chew's Carla Hall Says: "Soap Fans Have Really Come To Enjoy Our Show! I Think It's Because It's a Party In The Kitchen!"

Really Carla?  I don’t think All My Children fans were hoping to party in the kitchen when Pine Valley was wiped off the map for this foodie/cookie show! In a brand new interview out with The Braiser,The Chew co-host and Top Chef  finalist, Carla Hall tries to talk her way around a question posed which was, “With The Chew’s one year anniversary fast approaching, did you expect it to do as well as it did, and be embraced in the way that it has been, especially after the flack it got for bastardizing the soap opera time slot with a talk show?”

Hall replied to the question stating:  “Oh my gosh, we did [get criticized]. It was crazy and Brian Frons took a lot of heat for that, and I was sad to see [All My Children] go, but what I saw in it was that the soap fans were so passionate, and there’s a beginning, and middle and an end for everything, and even for us there’s a beginning. And when something ends, something else begins, and sometimes we don’t like that change. But soap fans [and] new fans have really come to enjoy the show, and I think it’s because it’s a party in the kitchen and it reminds people of what it’s like to entertain, you know? And you have your friends and you’re talking about whatever and you’re learning, you’re cooking together, and I think the surprising thing — I was hoping that the show would be successful, but I think the surprising thing for me — was how well we all get along. We really like each other. It’s a motley crew that works. “

So what do you think of Carla’s Hall’s comments?  It is true that The Chew survived while The Revolution didn’t, and its execution seemed to be better conceived than OLTL’s dismal replacement, and is having staying power for now.  However, are soapers really tuning into the cooking show for lack of anything else to watch, or is Hall delusional?  Weigh-in!

I like Carla, but she is wrong! It is a different set of people watching the Chew than watched the soaps. The Chew is just another in a cookie-cutter set of programs that are being produced because they are cheaper than other types of daytime entertainment. I’ll put it this way – do you honestly think the Chew will last 40 years?

I think the fans were successful in getting some attention by dive bombing the Revolution and extending the life of General Hospital. Let’s keep up the good work!

I’ve yet to watch … and never will. I still miss AMC … and wake up in the middle of the night frequently to catch old episodes being shown on Soapnet.

I’ll watch ABC at 1 pm again when my soap returns.

Carla is delusional!!! I cant see any “TRUE” soap fan watching that garbage! Most have boycotted ABC! I honestly think they only reason they have any ratings is because most waiting areas such at doctors offices and nail salons have abc on their tvs. (well at least all i have been in for the past year) I always ask for them to be changed! i refuse to sit there and watch!!!

  8. Rachel Cole

    July 19, 2012 at 10:05 am

  9. Amanda

    July 19, 2012 at 10:05 am

Did someone forget their medications this morning? Soap fans, at least me and my soap friends, do not “enjoy” this poor excuse of a show. It is a total waste of airtime. I’m honestly surprised that it didn’t fail as quickly as The Revolution. Soap fans are loyal to our soaps, NOT the replacement shows. Whoever thinks that we enjoy or like The Spew, oops I meant Chew, is delusional. Good job ABC.

  10. Franny Wright

    July 19, 2012 at 10:06 am

Seriously, Carla??!! If there are any soap fans watching your show, the count couldn’t be high enough to affect the ratings much. The only time I had any interest was when Laura Wright from GH was on, then I watched her on the clips which were posted here on Michael’s site. Other than that, The Chew is never tuned in at my house or any of my other soap friends. We all want our soaps back!!!

Honestly? I’m not sure I can speak to the content of the show since I have not watched it. But what I can say is that I do not know one single soap fan who is watching this show, and I know a LOT of soap fans. I am actually shocked that is has survived. I really don’t know who’s watching it, because no one I know is. So, yeah…I think she’s delusional.

Oh Carla Hall, you are so very very wrong. Soap fans do not and NEVER will enjoy your tacky cooking show. I do not know one soap fan who watches this. If some people are tuning in, it’s only because there is nothing decent to watch anymore. It will not last. Soap fans are loyal to their beloved soaps. The people watching your show are not loyal and will not care at all if the show is cancelled. Soap fans will never give up fighting to get their shows back. Screw the Chew!

  18. Mary

    July 19, 2012 at 10:13 am

I’m a soaper and I do not like cooking shows nor watch them.Beside who with a right mind would want a man that stole 5 and half million dollars from his waiters and never got a day in jail for it.Instead he got a show.Really good criminal justice system. If one of his workers did to him what he done they would be locked up.Even people how posted how rude he is in the real world if you don’t have a big wallet.Just because people with Neilsen boxes boost the ratings for the stupid show doesn’t mean there watching.I have ask people who love cooking shows to watch it nd tell me what they think. Not one liked it and would watch it again. So where’s these 2 million people.I haven’t found one in my area.Mcatter of fact one said the Revolution was better the the Spew and look how bad that turned out.Something not right in these ratings.

From the glimpses that I’ve caught “The Chew” looks like it might be amusing, light entertainment. If it were on at a different time I might give it a chance but I refuse to watch ANYTHING that has replaced my soaps. I’m sure many ABC soaps fans feel the same way. Where is Carla Hall getting her info from?

  27. Alisa

Sorry but she’s just plain wrong, this soap fan has never nor will I ever watch that show. I won’t watch any of the shows that they are trying to shove down our throats. I want our Soaps back and when that occurs ABC might be back on my to watch list. Until then their daytime (besides GH) shows stay off in this house!

    • Chris

      July 19, 2012 at 2:50 pm

I watch GH but that’s it! ABC gave their soap viewers the boot and I have done the same to them. Bring back the two soaps that were so good and remove the trash you have replacing them. Many viewers would turn back to ABC then.

      • Jackie

        July 20, 2012 at 5:42 am

ABC in my opinion proved they do not care what the fans want and the fans are saying quite loudly to ABC that we don’t care what they want. So who will win this battle? I think right now the biggest loser is the fans, we lost two beloved shows and for what? More reality / talk show crap that we can get on a 100 other channels? Why does ABC think that is a smart move? It obviously is not. I hope the ratings continue to tank and I hope that someone at Disney realizes you can’t beat us into submission!

  29. Grace

    July 19, 2012 at 10:21 am

She is nuts! I have NEVER watched that show, and I never will. Nor do I, or will I, watch anything that is One Life to Live’s time slot. I have many friends who also watched All My Children and One Life to Live, and none of them watch either. In fact, my tv is turned off during those time periods. If I want to watch a show about food, I will watch the Food Channel, not some lame replacement for one of my favorite shows.

  30. Nancy

    July 19, 2012 at 10:22 am

This is the biggest lie I have ever heard. Soap fans hate the Chew. I hate the Chew and ABC. I will never watch your crap of a show when I can watch the food network. You suck big time.

Abc really made a mistake and trying to convince us that some soap opera fans are watching the chew and don’t care anymore about our soaps but, they don’t realize we won’t give up the fight tell our soaps are back on and the chew is gone.

UNBELIEVABLE!!!! What is Carla Hall smoking cause she is majorily delusional thinking that soap viewers like The Chew better known as The Phew. We hate this show, disgusted with ABC & their cancelling of both AMC & OLTL. There is not a soap viewer out there who will sit down and watch this disgusting show. ABC has killed their afternoon lineup by adding yet another cooking show and what the zillioneth talk show to their lineup.. Viewers don’t want this crap, we want our soaps back. Get your head out of the dream worlds and smell the coffee,Carla. THE PHEW SUCKS!!!

Carla is SO wrong. If soap fans are watching it, they must not have been that loyal. I will never watch anything put in the OLTL or AMC timeslots. I am loyal but NOT to ABC. I’m not watching The Spew, The Revolution or GAA. Won’t watch Katie either. Never have and never will. Cannot stand Mario or Clinton. And don’t want to see the others. If I want a food show, I will go to the Food Channel. Do they have a FB page? Though Clinton would probably attack me there as well. 🙁

  45. Lu Anne McCurrey

    July 19, 2012 at 10:36 am

I will never watch the Chew or anyother show on ABC except for my soaps. If they believe the soap fans are going to change their mind about watching these replacement shows then they need help. My television is on ABC/Disney for General Hospital now and then the channel gets changed. I even gave up Disney and my yearly vacation to DisneyLand got changed to Universal Studios and Knotts Berry.

ABC wont even give Agnes her rights back and I believe it is because they know if another station picks up the rights to All my Children and or One Life to LIve their ratings will double and ABC will not admit they were wrong.

  46. Kelsy

    July 19, 2012 at 10:36 am

I have NO idea where she is getting her information from because I don’t know any soap fans who are watching that show, come to think of it I don’t know anyone that watches the show period! Seriously television is flooded with these talk show/reality type shows & it’s overkill & played out in my opinion! I hope all these replacement shows crash & burn & the network eventually learns its more important to air what viewers want to see. Sorry to the people on these shows, I don’t have anything against them, everybody has to work but your show took away a program that many people have watched for decades, for any show to last and keep the same viewers for so many years while adding new ones, it was doing something right and for the network to discredit that and not value the loyal viewers it had for so many years, they are extremely foolish & have made an enormous mistake! I like many have loved these shows since I was in very young probably middle school & I’m in my 30s now so for as long as I’ve loved these shows is probably how long it will take for me to not be annoyed at how they were removed!

  47. Lorrie

We have enough of these lousy shows and seriously people wonder why Americans have an obesity problem well its because all that’s on tv now are cooking shows! Ditto! ABC/D is no longer on in my home except for General Hospital. They can take all their daytime and primetime shows and stick them somewhere. Carla sure does not live on the planet Earth if she thinks us soap fans are watching the Spew. No way!

I doubt soap fans are watching. I know I refuse to watch it. But there are a lot of foodies out there and/or folks who like food/cooking shows. I am addicted to Chopped on the Food Network. But that is where I go for my food shows – The Food Network! I think this concept played better than the Revolution because there are more people out there inclined to watch food shows. How many people really want to watch another weight-loss type show? The Spew also has some well-known chefs attached to it – ie. Syman and Batali, so that helped. I just think The Revoltion was not wel-defined. I also think OLTL fans were probably more vocal about losing their show. I loved both AMC and OLTL and still really miss them. I refuse to watch anything else ABC slaps in that time period. And when GH moves from 3 to 2 p.m., I will watch GH but not watch Katie at 3. I hate to see people quouted as saying it was time for soaps to start ending. That is total bull as we can see by how popular the genre still continues to be, particularly at night. ABC Daytime just wanted out of the soap biz – period. If they would have had Katie ready by last year, GH would have been dumped too along with AMC and OLTL. It’s only because The Revoltion was such a disaster that GH is still kickig around. And I”m so glad it is. Since Cartini arrived, I have been tuning in more than I have in years. I used to find GH really hard to watch for more than a few minutes at a time. But I love that they have weaved some of my favorites from OLTL in there. When I saw Todd and Blair on Wednesday’s show, I felt so happy and realized just how much I have missed OLTL. I think McBain has worked out really well in PC as well and I’m glad to see Kristin A. as Starr is finding her footing and the fans seem to be finally warming to her. I really would love to see a well-placed AMC character or two there – I think Dr. David Hayward definitely needs to be on staff at GH and bring along Cara too. It would help to see a little bit of Pine Valley live on too!

Before you can comment on the Spew you should watch it and I have 3 times to give it a chance. All three times I made it about 3-5 mins couldn’t stand any of it. One time was not enough for an opinon because it might have been a bad day. Looks like to me they’re all bad!! I didn’t know what this ones name was or any of the rest, she was horrid. Like every one else I must say she is delusional right along with ABC if they think they could ever take the place of a soap, even my least favorite AMC! Don’t waste your time even for those 5 mins – they suck!

What kind of Kool-Aid is this Carla chick drinking? There are millions of true soap fans that are watching nothing on ABC except for GH! The ratings for the Spew are very suspicious. No one I know is watching that loud, hot mess of a show. They need to get rid of it, GAAg, and Katie! No program will be successful on ABC Daytime until AMC and OLTL are back in production!

  62. Gail Murray

Why don’t the people over at The Chew just keep their mouths shut and quit addressing the soap fans?! None of us are watching your crappy show!! And last I heard, The Chew wasn’t having a ratings boom, so quit trying to fool yourself and everyone else and face the reality….We soap fans want nothing to do with your show, and we want our soaps back. Just because the stupid network you work for hasn’t cancelled your show yet doesn’t mean that soap fans are warming up to you. Ever since OLTL went off the air, I have stopped watching ABC…now Carla, does that sound like a soap fan that’s a soap fan that’s come to really enjoy your show? Get a clue!!!

Oh dear, Carla Hall, me thinks you are not seeing things clearly.

How ironic her name, btw. Did anyone else note that OLTL for many early years boasted Carla Gray as a lead character who married Ed Hall, thus Carla Hall.

  73. Lynda W.

    July 19, 2012 at 11:48 am

C’mon people! Can’t you see what’s going on here? Theres’s no way that Carla is that stupid as to believe that the soap fans have embraced her show and are enjoying it. This is all a marketing tactic, a trick, to make people think that soap fans are watching. The idea is to make people think, if soap fans are watching, well then this show must be great, because soap fans said they would never watch! It’s a trick to get people to watch! OR, it’s a (false) reason as to why the (false) ratings are doing as well as they are. I really think that ABC are fudging these ratings somehow. I find it hard to believe that The Chews ratings were higher than The Revolution’s. While both shows are horrible, The Chew is down right stupid and nauseating, and I could not stomach any of the hosts. The Revolution was plain boring, but the hosts were at least watchable without feeling the need to throw up! I also have a theory as to a possibility as to how the ratings are doing as well as they say they are. We know that the soap fans are NOT watching this garbage, and I really find it hard to believe that even people who were not fans of the soaps are watching this garbage either. Because this stuff is not entertaining! But, my theory is that TV’s that are in doctor offices, hospitals, hair salons, places that sell TV’s like Best Buy and Sears, etc. car repair, or any type of waiting areas, are all set on ABC all day. They put it on ABC first thing in the morning and then they just keep it on all day long! This could be making the ratings higher! It would be nice if we could get these places to tune to another channel during The Chew or whatever replaces The Revolution. But then we have to be careful as they may forget to tune back when GH is on! And we don’t want to lose our last soap! But c’mon people! Carla knows we are not watching her! She may look stupid, but she couldn’t be that stupid! IT’S ALL A TRICK BY ABC! Thanks Michael Fairman for presenting this story and asking the soap fans what we think!

I am a soap fan and I’ve never watched the Chew or the Revolution. It’s true some people are watching the Chew but I bet most soap fans are not. AMC consistantly got better ratings than The Chew and the Revolution was a dismal failure. I’ll bet that GAA doesn’t do much better. ABC needs to bring back It’s soaps if it wants soap viewers back. I watch GH but no other show on ABC/Disney.

Is she serious?!? That has got to be the CRAZIEST thing that I have heard yet!!! I am outraged at this! Who does she think that she is kidding? No, No…NO!! I cannot even make it through the promos, it has got to be one of the most boring, irritating things that I have seen on TV. Can somebody please tell me how in the world that this show is still on?!? It is like they took a bunch of cooking segments from the morning shows and lumped them all together with bad commentary and decided this was the next big thing. The personalities of these people are way over the top ridiculous and annoying, in my opinion. This is not new, or innovative programming, ABC. If you flip through the channels during supposedly “daytime television”, it is ALL THE SAME THING! It is a whole bunch of talk about the VERY same topics from the morning shows, with the VERY same guests. I now know that the “powers that be” could CARE LESS for their viewers, and more about replacing our beloved soaps with more cheap talk, so I do not care what they offer. *Sigh*

I do not know any soap fans that watch this show, so I don’t know what she’s talking about. Yes, she may have viewers and her show may stay on the air for a while, but soap fans are not watching and when her show finally goes off the air, as they all do, I wonder how many people will be heartborken and still dream of its’ return. The soap fans are still doing that for their shows and I know they will for a long time, because I am one of them!

She is so delusional! Soap fans DO NOT watch that crack pot of a show they call “entertainment”? Daytime on ABC has come to the point of returning to Radio for me. Except for GH. Its the only time my tv is even on during the day. I love my OLTL characters back on the air bringing a piece of my fav show back to the screen. I just wish TPTB would admit their failures and return OLTL and AMC to where they belong and stop wasting precious time and money on crap. I wont watch ABC nor do we watch anything Disney in my house. Will never forgive them for the way they treat their customers.

  94. Liz Denham

    July 19, 2012 at 1:09 pm

The ONLY reason this show got where it is is because of ABC’s dirty tricks. Soap fans were distracted by the whole Prospect Park thing. We will not be distracted again! Now we have HuLu dangling in front of us. Not gonna bite ABC/D. Disney owns 27% of HuLu! I’ll believe it when I see it. No Soaps = No ABC/Disney! No Mouse in MY House!! Bring back our soaps or give Agnes back the rights to her shows!!!

    • *Christine*

      July 19, 2012 at 2:00 pm

Other than Disney owning part of Hulu, what do you mean by “dangling in front of us.” I’m so out of the media loop. I used to work at legal in Sony until I quit to raise my boys.

It’ll never happen..I watch Y&R, B&B (though I hate this soap just supporting soaps) & DAYS now..even though I think B&B is the worst soaps have to offer..I would watch that over Spew anytime..I have to fill the void somehow but it’ll never be the same..since AMC & OLTL were cancelled & I will never forgive ABC for this or some lady whose bun is too tight & is making up stories about soap fans…never happen CRAZYLADY…

I really think she is nuts. OLTL fans did not & will not watch trash & I believe AMC fans feel the same. The BOYCOTT is still on for ABC til they bring back OLTL & AMC.

Susan m , you are right about Carla being out of her mind, There is no way a soap fan is going to watch the chew, Not going to happen. We watch General hospital then abc gets shut off and not put back on till the next episode, this soap fan will never change the way I view my programs and the chew, gaa, the talk, and that Katie Couric nonsense or any other program that did replace the soaps will never be seen in my home. Besides there is always HGTV with better cooking shows – who needs the Chew? Until ABC brings back the soaps or allows some other group to purchase the rights, I will not watch any show on ABC except for General Hospital!

I agree to that! Hand over the f#@**** rights to those shows. ABC doesn’t want the shows and they don’t want anyone else to have them/ make money off of them. You know who they may have sold them to without hesitation? Oprah! Because Oprah was a member of ABC.

That’s what I say, But abc will never do that and they don’t care how they piss off the soap fans. They will continue to change there daytime programing and they will continue to ignore what we are doing by fighting for our soaps to bring back and to keep general hospital going, they are cheap bastards that want more money in their pockets and that’s the way it goes. Sorry 1loveabcsoaps but from what I heard the soap fans are told to fight for only one of the soaps to bring back and I choose One life to live, all my children and general hospital come in second and third for me, no other soap will have my heart the way One life to live has it.

  122. IHateThe Chew (And Oprah Too!)

    July 19, 2012 at 3:33 pm

This crazy-eyed lunatic is totally delusional. The show is horrible! The ratings are a disaster.Don’t forget: they basically destroyed AMC in the months/years before it went off the air and then spent a small fortune plugging The Chew everywhere they could; and AMC’s ratings were still better! Btw, you don’t see all those crazy, annoying Chew ads anymore, do you? Maybe they finally got tired of throwing $$ away? Then cancelling OLTL when it was on top of its game was totally asinine!

Bottom line: Carla is clueless, annoying and probably the ugliest woman in America if you rate by shear ugliness and coun’t weight or physical abnormalities!

    • 1loveabcsoaps

      July 19, 2012 at 9:58 pm

You know, I knw you may not like Carla Hall, but gosh, do you have to be so critical of the woman. She can’t help how she was born, and in fact, she may not be that attractive, but she is far not the ugliest woman in America. On top of that, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, so you are the only one beholding to her being the ugliest woman in America.

As for Carla, she is speaking what she felt to be true to her, and is entitled to her opinion. She certainly can’t down rate her show, when asked and put on the spot like that. I missed my soaps like everyone else but I am not going to get into name calling over her physical features; best to focus on the words she spoke (something that she is/ and has control of). She can’t help how she was born. By the way, Carla Hall CAN’T be that ugly, she use to be a successful and well paid model, and traveled the country making good money doing so. I am surprisied Micheal is allowing this kind of hatred to go on on this site. I say hatred because that’s the words you chose. And Oprah doesn’t deserve such “choice” words of hatred for all she has contributed to the people of America. I miss my soaps, but I don’t hate Oprah for not picking them up. I just think she made a wrong business decision, and I believe in Oprah’s gut, she knows it.

      Blessing unto you.

Nothing against cooking shows, but for the most part I don’t watch’em. I’ll watch (cooking shows) once in a blue moon and esp if they’re not on during what use to be daytime/serial tv hours from 1 to 3:00 p.m., (NYC). Cooking is a necessary CHORE that I equate with a job because 1) we have to eat in order to stay alive 2) We can’t afford to eat out every night. I do not want to watch it on TV for “entertainment” purposes! That distinction, my friends, belongs to my soaps!!

The only reason I can think of for their so-called success is the fact that they have a good lead- in. Our local news is on just before her terrible excuse for a show and if you dont change channels fast enuf, they get the ratings! The panelists of this show, are the biggest group of unappealing folks ! It is still difficult for me to believe that ABC did away with 2 of their soaps, only to give us more of the same dull and dreary programming. Not sure where “Carla Hall” feels that the Soap Watchers are enjoying this show. I personally have not watched it and never will. Thanks to ABC/Disney canceling “ALL MY CHILDREN” and “ONE LIFE TO LIVE” I am no longer an ABC/Disney consumer. I do DVR and watch the same day episodes of “General Hospital” Otherwise, I have found new shows on other channels to watch both Daytime and Primetime. So, I think that “Carla Hall” was paid to say what she did. I am sure that her comments were the work of Anne Sweeney and Bob Iger to promote a show with extremely low ratings. Just my opinion.

I only watch GH on ABC/D.
      I will Boycott ABC forever.
At one time I thought ABC would be the LAST Network to ever cancel a Soap with the way they promoted all the Fun In The Summer Celebrity/Fan Events at Disney along with The Soap Cruises. Now I know that was all about Greed since ABC sleeps with Disney.
And I guess The Chew must not pay Carla Hall very well because that’s one whopper of a lie she’s trying to sell. If she was getting paid commission she would be owing them.

I didn’t watch AMC, but I won’t watch a show with a host (Batali) who settled out of court for stealing from his own employees.

If Hall believes her statements contrary to the abundance of evidence suggesting otherwise, she is delusional, and mentally ill people probably shouldn’t be hosting a television show. If she believes her statements, unaware of conflicting evidence, she is clueless and ignorant and shouldn’t be hosting either. Whatever her underlying etiology, she is ill-informed and not credible.

More likely, Hall is aware of soap fan discontent and is attempting to sway viewer opinion as a publicity and marketing ploy to promote her show. This is what people in media are paid to do: to promote themselves and their product. Her hope is that if her statements are repeated enough, others will believe her views, which will then come to be accepted as reality. It’s so transparent and self-serving.

Nothing can save The Chew from its own banality.

    • 1loveabcsoaps

      July 20, 2012 at 6:58 am

One thing I enjoy and appreciate about your post (david with a small “d”, as you identify yourself ) is that you ( like myself) whatever the subject content-seem to respond back to it based on the FACTS when rendering your view,OR…… you are willing to take a REAL look at an opposing view. I loved your comment:
” Hall is aware of soap fan discontent and is attempting to sway viewer opinion as a publicity and marketing ploy to promote her show. This is what people in media are paid to do: to promote themselves and their product.”

Yes people, this is what people are PAID to do (key word) to promote themselves and their product (key word). As I stated above in a ” like minded ” statement, “Carla can’t certainly down rate her show, when asked and put on the spot like that.” If she did, she would certainly be OUT of a job.

Whatever the situation, I want to know if the The Chew is considered a commercial success? Are the numbers falling, or is the viewership increasing? And if the ratings really aren’t that well, WHY on earth are they STILL on the air? Somebody is watching this show, and I believe when Carla said, “soap fans have really come to enjoy the show”, that is a ” half truth”. She may have strength the truth somewhat, BUT I do believe that some soap fan(s) in Carla’s travels have come up to her and made this statement to her, while others have appeared right on The Chew, in the live audience and told her that, while feeding their faces!! Yet, if I was her, I wouldn’t even have brought up ‘ soap fans ‘ coming to enjoy the show. I would of just left it with “other” , other new fans have come to enjoy the show, to NOT cause a media blizz, which the media loves a mess. At the same time, the psychology is: If you say soap fans are watching, then the ones that AREN’T will START, because they will say: ” Hey, let me give it a shot since ” other ” soap fans are watching”.

Hey david: Did you watch the emmy awards? What did you think of Susan Lucci and her many mentions of her Erica Kane character? Barbara t brought it to my attention, saying that: ” Lucci, hogged the microphone from Erika Slezak, and spoke of Erica Kane so much AS IF she was the only actor on AMC, concluding that I was right about Susan Lucci, and her intertwined life her Erica Kane/ Susan Lucci. Like I have said, I love Susan, but the truth is the truth. Did you watch the emmy’s? What did you think of it? Was it really that bad, because Barbara t sounded off about it?

Hey 1loveabcsoaps, There is thread going on here about how we feel about Susan Lucci and her preformance the night of the emmys I forgot what day the emmy was on but you can have a good read about her, prepare to stay a while. We let ericka kane have it back because of her self centered behavior that night. She still makes me angry when I think about it, I would much rather have seen Ericka Slezak and hear about one life to live. But good news because One life to live ended in January, one life to live can go for the emmys again and ERicka Kane can stay home, That’s if they put me in charge of the emmys.

The daytime emmy’s were on in June ..I think the 27th or 28th…I saw the whole show…I know there are fans out there for Ms.Lucci…But that night at the emmy’s she was out of line..In my opinion…Hogging the show…Making sure the camera was always on her mainly…When she presented a award all the winners came on stage & you couldn’t see Ms. Lucci. Ms. Lucci made a point of standing on her tippy toes so she could be seen in the camera….Scripted or not Ms. Lucci , really wanted to be noticed very badly…I would have rathered heard from Erika Slezak more….She is more down to earth….And a team player…..Ms. Lucci is all about Ms. Lucci….I use to like her. But not so much now….Her actions turned me off……

My cooking is enjoyed my many and none of your recipes can hold a candle to what I!ve been cooking!!!! Also, ABC, have you noticed how high the ratings. For Dallas are????This is a “nighttime soap opera that’s been off the air for a long time and yet as soon as it returned to the airwaves all the fans returned with it. Why? BECAUSE SOAP FANS ARE THE MOST LOYAL. AND THE BEST FANS !!!! We will never give up or ever forget how much we all love and miss AMC & OLTL. Get the message once and for all. I also want to mention that in the area where I live, in September after GH is over at 3:00, thet will be broadcasting Riki Lake and after her show, Katie Couric’s show wil be on at 4:00. So that means double the talk show garbage. Well, they can put on alll the cooking shows and talk shows they want, I will never watch anything except GH. Where is Barbara t’s comment? That’s the comment I logged on to read. I have no comment, you ALL have said it all. I do WONDER though, WHAT is the TRUTH, the real TRUTH of the ratings of The Chew? Are the ratings UP or DOWN? Is the show considered a commercial success? And I wonder SINCE no one seems to be watching, (according to these post) when the HELL is it going to go off the air? I think Carla Hall said soap fans have really come to enjoy the show BECAUSE somewhere in her travels and walks of like, (soap fans of some kind) have come up to her and told her this, and I’m sure some of those soap fans are in the live audience of The Chew, who have told her this.

On this very website, some posters have admitted that they watch The Chew, while rejecting at the same time The Revolution.

I can’t stand either shows. And the same goes for CBS’s The Talk.

Yup, Yup amd Yup. On this very site people have admitted watching The Chew (yup 1) while rejecting the Revolution (yup 2) and I can’t stand EITHER, including The Talk, (yup 3).

Like david (with a small d) your comments always fall down the line of minus the bias BUT THE the FACTS….. that’s why I asked for you BELOW.

    July 19, 2012 at 10:12 pm

I just checked the newest ratings for “The Chew” vs AMC I could find (Mar 1, 2012)..,.”The Chew” surpassed “All My Children’s” year-ago weekly average by 7% in Women 18-34 (162,000 vs. 151,000) and nearly equaled in Total Viewers, pacing a mere -3% lower (2.437 million vs. 2.505 million).

Once you get away from the younger demo #;s , I repeat… “PACING A MERE -3% LOWER THAN AMC A YEAR AGO IN TOTAL VIEWERS”

Sorry Carla. I don’t know where you got your info. Sounds like ABC “robbed Peter to pay Paul,” and lost a few million loyal soap viewers to do it.

  157. Denise

    July 19, 2012 at 10:14 pm

Seriously, Carla is suffering from Delusions! We will never watch your crappy replacement show! We, millions of loyal soap fans have boycotted your show from the beginning and we are stronger than ever in our dedication to bring your show down as we did with the revolting replacement that took the spot of our other beloved soap! Stop drinking and smoking weed and realize, we want AMC and OLTL back.. Never watched your show and never will.. You can take that to the Boss at ABC and let them know we only support GH.. Don’t speak for me or any soap viewer!

I’m here 1lovesoaps. This is my first comment on this thread. Another Heather posted above on July 19, 2012 at 4:12pm. But that wasn’t me.

As for Hall’s comments, all I can say is that if AMC fans had shown the same determination to take down The Chew as OLTL fans did to take down The Revolution, that crapfest would have been history by now.

So, 1loveabcsoaps needs someone to explain what she is saying now? Forget about her replying to me. I agree with what you are said about the music guy but I’m not talking about that, I’m talking about the crossovers which she complains about all the time, DR DAVID HAYWARD, Of course we are boycotting the chew and gaa to save general hospital that’s been our goal since this whole cancellation of the soaps began. But I will never give up on One life to live.

Hey 1loveabcsoaps, I am still here. Debi pops up once in a while. I could swear I wrote something here 2 days ago. I agree with Heather, we have to take the chew down like we did to the revolution. Who watches the chew? What a horrible waste of a show to take over where All my children use to be. It is getting watched by somebody I don’t understand, we took the revolution down and we will take gaa down to. The chew, what a stupid name for a dopy food show that should be put on the food channel so it can be enjoyed by people who like to learn how to cook and shovel food down their throats 24/7.

@1love reply: No, you are not BAD. But Kelly Ryan replied July 20th, 2012 at 11:05 am

So what do you think of that Barbara t? Do you feel Susan did that and it was ALL scripted for her?

    • barbara t. Loves one life to live # 1

      July 21, 2012 at 11:12 am

Hell no, ERicka Slezak tried to take the microphone and she never got to say a word, the tribute ended. Did you read where I told you to go there on june 24th? just read it ,and you will see what we all think of susan lucci and her performance that night, It may have been scripted but susan lucci took over and it was a farewell to all my children, one life to live got snubbed by ericka kane, If I could make 50 cents every time she said ericka kane and all my children I would be a millionaire.
that was so not scripted that was Eriika Kane being Ericka Kane.

Have not watched The Chew or any other replacement show, nor do I plan on it! I don’t understand the remarks that Carla made in regards to Soap fans watching The Chew! Yes, I watched a few times at first, but haven’t watched since the fist week it started. I have to say, if you are a Soap Fan, you won’t like The Chew! There is The Food Network 24/7 that is better, and there are no corny jokes to endure. At the very least, this Soap fan will not endure another minute of Carla and her Cronies!

This woman is very delusional!!!! We soap fans are not watching The Spew!!! Just like the ratings for the Revolution tanked, so will the ratings for this stupid cooking show! We fans were able to make sure that The Revolution failed and GAA is getting off to a horrible start and we will also concentrate on The Spew and show ABC executives how wrong they were when they said that soaps were no longer needed or wanted! The executives at ABC will see that we fans will not give up until they bring back our soaps or do the right thing and give the soaps back tot heir creator so that she may take them to another network which does care about ratings and listening to and keeping fans!!!

What a stupid cow. The Chew/Revolution/Good Morning Afternoon/Katie Couric will all be filed in the ABC history books under B for Big Mistake. Ten years from now, when NOONE is watching anything in the afternoons, some executive will scratch his head and wonder, “How can we get the 2.3 million loyal viewers we once had with One Life and AMC?!” I hope ABC/Disney lose all their revenue and go out of business asap.

Why ABC thought that their soap fans wanted the soaps canceled in favor of watching a bunch of people sit there and stuff their faces on national television is beyond me. Personally, I hate watching people eat on television. I don’t know who this Carla person is and, when the promos started airing for this show, she kind of creeped me out a little.

The only reason this horror of a show with these talentless hacks has ANY viewing auidience must be because they have it turned on in airport lounges, prison waiting rooms and nursing homes, where no-one is allowed to change the channel.

Not now or ever will I watch that crap, Any of the All my children and one life to live fans are against watching the chew or any other Garbage programing abc wants to put on their network where the soaps use to be. Until my soap one life to live and All my children is right back where it belongs, that is how I feel, I will continue to watch General hospital when it is over Abc and I part ways, they have nothing but trash on daytime and prime time and I refuse to watch.

Here is an opposing view: as of now, almost 300 comments have been posted here about Carla being “delusional”; “living under a rock”; “drunk”; “crazy”; and “out of touch”. And those were the nice comments. The irony escapes all 300 of the people who posted these comments, because the EXACT SAME DESCRIPTIONS could also be applied to them, grown men and women who are unable to move on with their lives because a TV soap opera got cancelled. A TV show. With fake characters and fake stories. People that weren’t real that you never knew in real life.

When a tragedy such as the one in Colorado occurs, people shake their heads and say “what a shame”. Yet people never seem to LEARN anything from it. Live your lives. Be nice to people. Enjoy yourselves. Don’t waste month after month sulking because a stupid TV show got cancelled and people have moved on. Time for you to do the same.

    • Heather

      July 22, 2012 at 9:54 am

I agree with you that some of the comments here towards Carla Hall are unnecessary and uncalled for. But, on the other hand, why would Carla Hall say something like what she said other than to provoke soap fans?

And if AMC is a “stupid TV show”, what is The Chew? A masterpiece of art?

    • Lynda W.

      July 22, 2012 at 2:24 pm

So you don’t seem to understand why we are upset that a FAKE show with FAKE characters got canceled? You don’t understand why we would like a show that had FAKE stories and FAKE people? Well, let me start by saying I would much rather watch these FAKE stories than to watch these so called REAL shows! I found more substance and more connection to these so called FAKE stories than any so called REAL shows that are being shoved down the viewers throats! REALITY and talk or cooking shows are being forced on the viewers even though we have made it known this is NOT what we want to see! I would rather watch a FAKE scripted, well acted and entertaining show any day over a REAL show! I do not want to watch The Jersey Shore, The Real Housewives of NYC, DC, New Jersey, Beverly Hills, etc. Mob Wives, The Chew, The Revolution, Lizard Lick Towing, Toddlers & Tiaras, The Bachelor/Bachelorette, Mrs. Eastwood & Company, Basketball Wives, Bridezillas, Big Brother, Teen Mom, The Voice, Duets, The Biggest Loser, Wipeout (dumbest show ever) Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition, Bachelor Pad, Shark Tank, Glass House, Cupcake Wars, American Ninja Warrior, American Idol, Survivor, Fear Factor, Undercover Boss, Stars Earn Stripes, Good Afternoon America, The Kardashians, Hardcore Pawn, Hollywood Exes, The Fashion Police………….do I really need to go on? These are REAL shows and have REAL people on these shows. Are you suggesting that we the soap fans, or anyone else for that matter, should “GET ON WITH OUR LIVES” and watch this REAL garbage, as opposed to a FAKE show that was entertaining, was on TV for over 40 years, and won numerous emmys? I will NOT watch these stupid shows. You said that our comments about Carla were unkind? Well, while I will agree that “DRUNK” & “CRAZY” could have been left out, it is accurate to say she is quite “DELUSIONAL” to say that the soap fans have embraced her show. Everyone knows that is far from the truth. You yourself even made the comment that over 300 comments were left unfavorably regarding her statement. And ABC is also “DELUSIONAL” to think that it’s viewers will just watch any garbage that it puts on TV. And the ratings are showing that we are NOT watching the garbage! You state that we should move on with our lives? In other words, be good little viewers, shut up, stop sulking about our canceled shows and watch the garbage instead? NOT! ABC, and any network for that matter, needs to listen to it’s viewers and listen to what they want to see, and stop trying to cram these cheaply made, boring, stupid shows down our throats! And shame on you for even mentioning the Colorado tragedy in relationship to this situation! One has nothing to do with the other! Any one with half a brain knows what happened in Colorado is of course a real tragedy! Not a TV show being canceled! With that said, our TV shows being canceled, while not being a tragedy, is still an important matter to us!

    • david

      July 22, 2012 at 3:16 pm

Enough of the “sulking” and “unable to move on” insults, which you posted before. No one is obligated to patronize cheap, lousy programming and everyone is free to complain. Complaining about substituting an inferior product is not the same as failing to move on, unless you are a corporate shill hoping to manipulate viewers. Hall’s statements are self-serving, disingenuous public relations. If she wants to make inaccurate, unsupported generalizations about soap viewers, then she can live with the response or shut up.

NOT! lol “ME” must work for ABC! lol Also as I stated above, I would rather watch my “FAKE” shows any day with their “FAKE” characters and “FAKE” stories over any of these “REAL” shows that are boring, stupid, have people who are uninteresting, and many who seem to lack a brain!

Amen. Review my comments above, because I commented about the comments said about Carly Hall, which included the word HATE toward she and Oprah. I found it to be quite uncomfortable to read, myself. And as I said, Carly was speaking a half truth, because I am sure soap fans (who come to The Chew ) and feed their faces, have told her this, along in her other travels. I truly don’t believe the entire statement was MADE UP by Carly Hall. I also believe as Scott or Blake, (one of them said) back in February, “Let the show DIE folks ” speaking of OLTL. My personal belief is: If noone is going to stage a protest, OR call a news conference PERHAPS in serveral of the states across the United States, THEN, just talking and agrueing about OLTL vs. GH is a waste of time. Certainly, I don’t believe people at GH should have lost their jobs because some ofOLTL cast showed up, and became CONTRACT PLAYERS……. Short term visits, 3, 4 5 months, BUT not placed on contracts, leading to lay offs over at GH.

Oh come on, 1loveabcsoaps, we are fighting, I still let abc know how I feel and I am not the only one annoying the rat channel day after day, there is no way I can travel to where ever all the rat people work and protest but I am sure they know how we all feel, abc is hearing from us believe me. How did general hospital loose jobs? are you kidding me? They hired how many One life to live characters? Todd, John, and Star. Tea and blair are not on contract. Abc knew they screwed up with one life to live so they want A part of olto on gh because the oltl fans spoke the loudest when we lost our soap, And we are not keeping quiet not now not ever. We got rid of that revolution now we are working on gaa, when general Hospital moves to the 2 O’clock spot I wonder what will happen? The one life to live fans will help to save that soap, you take away those characters there will be a problem, I will still watch general hospital, but the fans that ONLY watch One life to live, They will turn it off, I don’t think that who ever makes the decisions for general hospital should take that chance and kill that little piece of Landview that we will see in Port Charles, It’s helping general hospital not hurting, And no, One life to live is not taking over General hospital If it was I would be a bit happier with my so called crossovers from landview and believe me I am not happy the way the stories are going and I would love to get the hell out of Port charles and go home to Landview and stay there, all my characters had more heart and family then general hospital ever had, the mob killed everything good on gh and that’s why all the fans left, getting them back will take time because they don’t want to come back to the, I am sorry to say this, but come back to Sonny and all the stories that are centered around him, and Jason.

barbara t. Loves one life to live # 1,

What 1loveabcsoaps is saying is that GH actors and crew should have never lost their jobs. For example, Valentini fired the GH guy that was in charge of the music and replaced him by the guy who did the music on OLTL. That is so wrong in every level. Shame on ABC for even letting Valentini do that.

And sorry, but I’m not fighting The Chew and GAA so that ABC can bring back OLTL. ABC will never bring back OLTL no matter how many of their replacement shows fail. My fight against The Chew/GAA is strictly to save GH because its survival depends in part to the failure of ABC’s replacement shows.

I dont know what this Carla from the Spew is speaking about as i would never watch her idiotic show and from the looks of the rest of the comments most people here agree with me and dont watch her show.ABC made a big mistake in taking off All My Children and One Life to Live and replace it with the Chew and the Revolution which has since been replaced by another show.

I have no idea if any fans who watched AMC are watching the Chew/Phew/Spew. I know at 1pm I watch Days of Our Lives and at 2pm I watch MOVIN ON on RTV.
But I also try to be accurate and Non-partisan. And the fact is there are people who watch. It has been moderately successful. It has settled in at over 2 million viewers. 2.1 to 2.2 million in non-holiday times. Below what AMC was getting but not by that large of a gap. .
I still feel ABC could have cut the shows to 1 or 2 days a week, Monday and Fridays for 2 shows. and had the other show the other 3 days.
So how can I say she’s crazy saying it has been a success.
Though I would like to see her prove that a large part of the audience are soap viewers. There are many non-soap viewers who watch tv during the day.

The Chew has fallen BELOW 2 million viewers:

The Chew’s ratings have been steadily declining for months, which may have prompted Hall’s comments. The Chew is desperate because it is losing viewers. No one will miss this show once it is canceled.

It went back up the week of July 20th in the new edition to 2.12
They have not been steadily declining for months. the data does not support that. They have gone up and down Just like I have seen with the soaps for years.

Here in descending order are the last few months from the TV TAKES ALL SITE
Which supports the comment that it has been above 2 million consistently. which is .moderately successful. below what AMC was getting, but with a much cheaper cost
Up down up down just like in all of daytime.
I won’t miss it if it is cancelled but to call those 2 million people no one , are not the facts. Now it’s time for Days. later

The Chew had as many as 2.77 million viewers in January. It has been downhill from there.

      • Jeff

        July 23, 2012 at 4:58 pm

During the Christmas Holiday it had 2.77 million. During regular times it has been . It regular average has been around 2 million or above. That’s what the data shows. If not the emotional. Down hill ever since should put it in REVOLUTION territory or even GAA.
The politifact/factcheck will have to say it has been a moderate success. so far.
Now the REVOLUTION tanked and it looks like the temporary replacement is in the same boat. As far as KATIE, well it’s not going to air on the ABC affiliate in Orlando, they passed, it will be on the NBC affil. That’s got to mean something.

Have you bumped your head lady? In what dimension are soap fans enjoying your stupid show? Certainly not this one! Have you not been paying attention? Hello! Get a clue and read all the reviews us soap fans have posted on your farce of a show! We are not watching and we are not going to watch! You are living in a fantasy world if you think we are enjoying your show! And you just discredited yourself even further by claiming that we are! Quit daydreaming and get a real job!

LOL Who is she foolin anyways???LOL I watched that show for a bare miniumum of maybe 10 min and I must say they act like a bunch of loons out on break from a cracker jack factory. I think all their ratings are being bought and paid for by the jerks who cancelled out our two soaps AMC and OLTL. I can’t see this show or any replacement program succeeding in topping the ratings on our soaps. When will they realize they just can’t win, who knows. Me personally I would admit my mistakes and get these soaps back on the air before ABC becomes a defunct network and land in a box along with the ball and jacks and hula hoops.

It’s amazing that she says, “you have your friends and you talk about what your learning” Is she serious? I am not saying this out of anger, but in the last ten months, I have not heard ONE person, at work, or at restaurants, or in a bar talk about THE CHEW. NOT ONCE have I heard anyone refer to ANYTHING regarding this show, much less watching it. Clearly, the people who are watching it, are NOT soap fans. If that were the case, the ratings would be off the wall. I have not given this show five minutes of my time, and NEVER will!

Not only is the show scary but the people who star in it are ugly! Carla Hall at the head of the ugly pack! She was a model??? WTH did she model? Dog clothes? And her attitude is annoying! I personally don’t care about the soaps but I wouldn’t watch this show just because it is visually scary and the people are such Egomaniacs! I have no money for food so why would I watch this? To be scared by the looks of the actresses and actors? Give me something interesting to watch….they air things so intermittently on ABC anyways…..they start shows and take them down like tissues from a tissue box!

the CHEW SUCKS! They took off all my children for this crap? she needs to keep her fat mouth shut. And soap fans are so passionate, that’s why they are bringing AMC and OLTL back! The chew better watch it because if the revolution can go, so can their crap. I’ll never watch it-I only catch a few seconds of the end when taping GH, and the best part about it is that it is ENDING can’t wait until Ms. Hall eats her words and finds her show on the chopping block! Carla is very annoying. Plus the show is so hokey. I’ve tried to watch it but can’t. I wish they would either revamp the cast and get rid of Carla and guy who also over exaggerates everything and seems to not have any skill to speak of. This is an insult to our intelligence. Wish ABC would get a better afternoon show. They must not be reading blogs like this.

I absolutely love the chew I appreciate the energy the great ideas and the great recipes. I think the cast is great whenever I get the opportunity to watch I do. and when all my children came on at 1200 there wasn’t a problem. Remember, all my children used to come on at 12 then one life to live at 1p and General Hospital at 2p that change was way before the Chew they put all my children up against Young and the Restless at 11a there go your change….

‘Strahan, Sara and Keke’ Canceled by ABC; Show Aired In Timeslot That Once Housed ‘All My Children’

No matter a network tries to do, replacing All My Children, which ran for 41 years on ABC has remained as everyone that follows the world of daytime drama knows, problematic.  Now come word via Page Six that Strahan, Sara and Keke has been canceled.

The show hosted by Michael Strahan, Sara Haines and Keke Palmer if you recall, replaced the foodie show, The Chew which ran for seven seasons and was the first show to air in the timeslot that belonged for over four decades to All My Children.

Back in March of this year, Strahan, Sara and Keke took a break to make way for ABC’s News  Pandemic: What You Need to Know, a daily coronavirus report anchored by Amy Robach, Dr. Jen Ashton and sometimes TJ Holmes.

However, because the show did well in that two-week experimental run it morphed into GMA 3: What You Need to Know.  The new version of the show also talked about hot topics in the current news cycle, as well.

ABC’s Catherine McKenzie began producing the “GMA3” show four months ago and the network officially announced her as Executive Producer of the program on Thursday.

While ABC has yet to officially announce Strahan, Sara and Keke is over, a spokesperson told Page Six: “We’re proud of our teams at ‘SSK’ and ‘GMA3’ and how quickly they transitioned to producing a daily show to give people the news and information they need during an unprecedented pandemic, and conversations continue about how the show will evolve in the months ahead.”

It appears that Strahan, Sara and Keke won’t be returning; the future as many of their staff have transitioned over to ‘GMA 3’ with producers from ABC News Live, (the streaming division), helmed by McKenzie.

As for the futures of Strahan, Haines and Palmer; Strahan will continues to host Good Morning America, and they are all actively under contract with the network.

So, what do you think of  ‘Strahan, Sara and Kek’e being replaced by ‘GMA 3: What You  Need to Know’?  How long do you think that show will last in the timeslot once taken up by residents of Pine Valley? Comment below.

Eva LaRue Talks On Her Daytime Emmy Nomination, And Opens Up About The Loss Of John Callahan

For Eva LaRue, the past two months have been some of the most emotionally gut-wrenching and challenging of her life, following the passing of her ex-husband, father of her child, and dearest friend, John Callahan (Ex-Edmund, All My Children). The outpouring of support she has received not only from her former AMC cast mates, but the soap world in general illustrates just how dear Eva is to all of us, and how many people had special memories of their time with John.

While mourning the loss of Callahan along with their daughter, Kaya, there was some heartwarming and re-affirming news that any actress would love to hear. Eva was nominated for a Daytime Emmy in the Outstanding Guest Performer in a Drama Series for her work as Celeste Rosales on CBS’ The Young and the Restless, and she is great company as her former AMC co-star Michael E. Knight (Ex-Tad) is also nominated along with her for his work on General Hospital.

The coronavirus pandemic has hit our country and world hard, but through it All My Children virtual reunions emerged as fans were engaged by the content, transported to happier times that brought them back to familiar faces in Pine Valley in which Eva participated along with her good friends, Kelly Ripa, Mark Consuelos and so many more, thanks to the EW. com weeklong event which concluded on Friday.

Michael Fairman TV talked with Eva in this very candid, at times heartbreaking, and open conversation where she shares details into the final days of her beloved John, her last moments with him, and how she tried to plan a memorial in his honor during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For so many of us, 2020 has certainly seen more lows then highs, but in the end for Eva, to receive a nomination now (an award she was last nominated for back in 1997 as Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for her work as Dr Maria Santos on All My Children) couldn’t have come at a better time. Here now is our conversation with Eva.

Photo: JPI

I’ve been thinking so much about you.  I’m glad we could do this, and in the midst of the tragedy of losing John Callahan, and then receiving a Daytime Emmy nomination.  What was your reaction when you learned you were nominated in a category with none other than your former AMC castmate and good friend, Michael E. Knight (Ex-Tad, AMC, now Martin, GH)?

EVA:  Oh, I know!  He’s the first person I texted!  I was like, “Congratulations, Michael!  Did you ever in a million years think that you and I would be in the same category of anything?”  Then I said, “And when you win this, can I just borrow it for the weekend just to dress it up and take pictures with it… just want to borrow it, just babysit the trophy for a weekend, please?” (Laughs)

Photo: JPI

What did you end up submitting that landed you the nomination for your role as Celeste on Y&R?

EVA: I submitted a scene with Peter Bergman (Jack, Y&R), who I have been friends for 30 years, if not more, and in all that time we had never worked together.  I met him when I was married to John O’Hurley (Ex- Dr. James Grainger) because John was over at The Young and the Restless at the time.  I went to a Christmas party with John to Peter and Mariellen’s house, and do you know who else was there?  Lisa Rinna (Ex-Billie, Days), and it was before she had gotten Days of Our Lives. She was dating Peter Barton (Ex-Scott Grainger, Y&R) at the time. We both ended up on soaps at the same time.  So, I submitted a scene with Peter, who is amazing, warm and open and such a great actor. Then I submitted a scene with my on-screen daughter Sasha Calle (Lola, Y&R) – I love that girl, and another one with Michelle Stafford (Phyllis, Y&R) who has also been my great friend for a couple of decades. The other scene I put on my reel was with me and Jordi Vilasuso (Rey, Y&R) who I also adore.  He is awesome and such a sweetheart.  I only had two months worth of material to draw upon.  So, I just submitted the scenes that I liked the best, and they all were within story, and all made sense.

Photo: Getty Images

Where is Celeste supposed to be now?

EVA:  She went back to Florida, and that was that. I would never say never to anything, but it was always supposed to be a short stint, and it was great.

So not only is it you and Michael E. Knight, but Jeffery Vincent Parise, Chrishell Stause, and Elissa Kapneck. This Guest Performer category is loaded!

EVA:  I know! I know and love, Chrishell (Ex-Amanda) because we worked together on All My Children, too, right before I left, and she is a doll.  She just might be the sweetest, kindest, girl on the planet.  She literally might be the sweetest person who ever lived!  I don’t know the other two nominees personally.  So, I’m excited for them too.  It’s such a diverse category.  It’s just really fun to be nominated with all of them.

Photo: Hallmark Channel

You were nominated before, though, for your work as Maria on All My Chldren during the emotional baby switch storyline; working opposite Susan Lucci (Ex-Erica) for a lot in it.

EVA:  Yes.  I was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for All My Children, and I was nominated for Best Original Song.  I wrote a song when Maria came ‘back from the dead’ to All My Children, with a producer friend of mine from Miami Sound Machine.

Photo: Live with Kelly Ryan

So, you’ve been doing all of these All My Children virtual reunions, which is so interesting that in this pandemic, people are looking for content, and they dip back into these beloved shows.  Was it fun doing the Santos Family reunion with everybody?

EVA:  Oh yeah, it was really, really fun.  I only saw in the big picture everybody else’s photo who was a part of it, and the people who I actually do hang out with the most, and see the most, and talk to the most, are Kelly Ripa (Ex-Hayley), Mark Consuelos (Ex-Mateo), and Sydney Penny (Ex-Julia).  I don’t see Sydney as much, but I do see her probably once every two years at least, but Sarah Michelle Geller (ExKendall) I see all the time and talk to all the time.  Kelly, Mark, and Sarah are the ones who walked me through that first week when John Callahan passed.  They literally were on the phone with me, the three of them, almost every day, but I got beautiful outreach, from what seemed like everyone.  This is when no matter how many years have passed since you have been in daytime, that the daytime family as a group – there used to be fifteen shows, now there are four – and people have bounced around and they are on other shows- – but the entire soap opera community reached out,   I cannot even tell you how much that meant to me.  It was overwhelming, and it was really, spectacularly beautiful.

Photo: JPI

I hope it was some solace to you knowing how much people loved John, and also that they love and care so deeply for you.

EVA:  I mean, people who did not even work with John reached out.  Every soap was represented by getting a hold of me, sending a text or a phone call, or if they didn’t have my personal information, they tweeted, or whatever it was… literally from every reach of soapdom.  It was amazing.

And your relationship with John was amazing with all of the ups and downs you went through; that you remained such dear friends.

EVA:  We remained really great friends all the way.

Photo: JPI

I so remember when the two of you first got together and it was this storybook real life soap couple romance.  John was always so sweet to me.  I was so, so sad, and you know, my heart just broke for you.

EVA:  I think it was just such a shock.  I don’t think anybody, and even Kaya were talking about it, because she graduated this week, and her dad is not here.  We’re not having a graduation, because of COVID-19, which sucks on top of it, but we were just kind of talking through the feelings of it.  She said, “You know what’s weird?  I guess I never pictured dad getting old, and I always wondered why, and now I know.”  When I would get on John about his heart or his health, he used to always say, ‘Oh, don’t worry Evala, (he always called me “Evala”).  I’m going to be here.  I’m going to be here a long time.  I’m fine.  I’m going to be here to walk Kaya down the aisle and see her kids and all that.  Stop worrying,” Every time he said it to me, something in my gut said, “I don’t think he is.  I don’t think he is,” but I always just dismissed that.  But never in my wildest dreams did I think John wouldn’t make it to her high school graduation.  He was only 66.

Photo: JPI

I had heard you ended up running to Palm Springs to be near John.  I can’t even imagine what that must have been like.

EVA:  The only good thing about this pandemic is that we had been shut down for only two weeks at that point.  Kaya and I got in the car.  John had some heart procedures the day before, on a Thursday.  I called him in the morning before he went in for the procedure.  I said, “Call me as soon as you get out of there.  Call me as soon as you come-to again, and you’re good,” and he said, “Okay, I will.”  I said, “I’m going to send Kaya out to you on Friday for the weekend, just so you have somebody to hang out and watch you, and I might come out too,” And then, I said, “Maybe, I’ll come down too in case you are feeling weak, just to watch out for you for the weekend.”   So, he called me after the procedure.   I said, “I cannot believe they sent you home! You just had some major heart stuff done.”  He said, “Oh no, they said I’m fine.  It was just run-of-the-mill heart stuff, angiogram…”  I was like, “Are you sure?”  He said, “Yeah, I’m fine.  I’m just tired.  I’m going to go to sleep.”  I said, “Do you want me to send Kaya out tonight?” and he was like, “No, no, no.  Send her tomorrow.”  So, in the morning, I called him at 9:00am.  No answer.  I texted him.  He always texted me like Johnny on the spot, and then texts me immediately back.  So, I call him again at 10.  Nothing.  His best friend calls me about a half-hour later, “Hey, I talked to John at about 8:00 this morning.  He said he was feeling really, really shitty and was going to go back to the hospital, and then, I texted him again at like 8:30 to just tell him something, and he hasn’t texted me back, and he always texts me immediately back.”  I said, “Oh my, God, I’ve been trying to get a hold of him for two hours; he hasn’t texted me back,”   I said, “You know what, I’ll call you back.”  So, I called his friend who lives down the street from John, and I said, “Go to his house, please right this second, knock on the door, jump the fence, knock on his bedroom, he might be asleep, I don’t know.”  So, he gets there, nobody is answering.  I said, “Break into the house please.  So, he did, and John was collapsed in the bathroom.  They called the paramedics, and as soon as they called me back and said, “John is unresponsive in the bathroom,” Kaya and I threw everything in the car, and what usually takes us two and a half hours without traffic, we made it down there from Los Angeles in an hour and forty-five minutes.

Photo: JPI

I don’t know how you made it down there in one piece. Thank, God!

EVA:  I drove so fast, like literally broke all land speed records and thank God because we got there just in time.  He was in emergency.  He hadn’t been put up in ICU yet, where we wouldn’t have been able to see him.  They weren’t going to let us in the hospital.  Thank God the person answering the door was an All My Children fan.  She was the one saying, “Sorry, no one is allowed in the hospital, no one can come in,” and I was like, “No, no, no, my ex-husband just came in.”  She said, “Was it Edmund?” and I said, “Yes, it was Edmund!”  She said, “Okay, follow me.”  Thank God for All My Children.  Thank God.  So, we followed this woman secretly, and we get to spend a half-hour with him in Emergency.  He was already on life-support, totally unresponsive, but we got to play John his favorite music, we got to just sit there and hold his hand and talk to him, and tell him how much we loved him.  Sarah Michelle Gellar called right when we were in the hospital in Emergency, and she said, “Put the phone by his ear,” so I put the phone by his ear, and she talked to John too, and she told him how much she loved him.  She used to always call him “GP”, which was short of grandpa, because she came on the show when she was 15, and she didn’t have a dad, and John acted like a dad to her – but she used to always call him “grandpa”, and he hated “grandpa”, so he was like, “You can call me “GP”, but not grandpa,” so she always called him GP.  I just put the phone by John’s ear, and what was crazy is that when she talked to him, his feet started twitching.  He started moving his feet.  Then, when Kaya was talking to him about Yankee season, he started moving his feet.  We were kind of hopeful that something was changing for the better.  We had about a half-hour with him, and then, they took him up to ICU, and then, we knew we couldn’t see him again.  They called us later that night that he had passed.

Photo: JPI

I am just so thankful that you got to see John one last time.

EVA:  I thank God every day that we got to say goodbye, because if we hadn’t gotten there in time to say goodbye, I just don’t know.

It’s very rare that a couple after a divorce, who have a child, and went from romance to dear friends, end up maintaining that relationship so many years later in their lives.  I know so many people who were together at one point in their lives, for years, and they don’t even talk to each other now.

EVA:  Well, you know, like any divorce, the first four years afterwards were super contentious but then, by year five, we kind of had this major breakthrough, and from then on, he was one of my closest friends, and one of the things we always kept alive for each other was we loved to  dance together. We fell in love, I think, dancing because originally our characters on AMC met at this country-western bar, and we had to take country line dancing lessons on the show.  They hired a choreographer for us so that during those scenes where we were falling in love, we would actually be able to do a two-step! So, we went out and practiced at Denim and Diamonds, which was a big country-western place in New York City at the time.  We used to go out with a whole group of us.  It was me, and Teresa Blake (Ex-Gloria) and Kelly Ripa, and her boyfriend at the time, Winsor Harmon (Ex-Del), sometimes Walt Willey (Ex-Jack); we just had a whole crew of us who would go out country dancing.  John and I also loved singing together.  He had the most amazing gravely kind of rockstar voice, but his real talent was harmonizing.  He could harmonize to anything.  So, when he would come over, we would sit in the kitchen and sing, and sing, and sing until the late hours because that’s what we loved to do, and that’s what he loved to do.  That’s one of my favorite last memories of us.  He was just over the month before, and Kaya’s bedroom is near the kitchen, so she came out and was like, “Can you two shut up?”  It was like two in the morning and we were still singing in the kitchen. (Laughs)  John was my dear friend and my confidant.

Were you able to have some kind of service during this stay-at-home pandemic we are all dealing with, in order to mourn the loss of John?

EVA:  It’s been so crazy.  We couldn’t even have a funeral.  That’s what made it all the more heartbreaking.  There were less than twenty of us, and we just got on a Zoom call and memorialized John.   I thought we were going to do a big Zoom memorial, but it seemed so overwhelming and so impersonal, it just was rubbing us wrong in every way.  Every way we were looking at it, we were like, “Oh my, God, we just can’t.”  We wanted to invite everybody he had ever worked with, and we were like, “No, we want to do that when everything can open back up again, and invite every person, and have a party” because John was always the life of every party.  Maybe we can do that in the fall or next year.  I kept trying to write something for the small memorial we did do for three days.  I kept coming back to this one song, because John was always the consummate bartender, too.  I sang a song that Bette Midler sang on the very last episode of Johnny Carson.  It was “One for My Baby (and One More for the Road)” and it’s about a bartender who has got a big personality and a lot to say.   I changed some of the words around a bit just to reflect who John was, and so, I ended up singing for it instead of speaking.  We always talked about that last episode of Carson; how stunningly emotional it was when Bette sang that song to kind of sing Johnny off for of all of his years on the air.  So, that’s what I did and because we loved to sing together, it just made sense.

I do think you touched upon something, earlier, too.  I don’t think any other genre would have that kind of unbridled camaraderie.  It’s such a family, like you said.  I don’t think you would find that quite like this; certainly in show business.

EVA:  I really don’t think you can. Even though there is always a good amount of competition in the soaps as well; between the soaps it’s like they are any sports team, but there is always a level of respect, love, and familial connection within the community.  I think that is why they have stood the test of time.  I really do think that is what hooks our audience, that is what keeps them there after all of these years, even though unfortunately the genre is antiquated looking, there is something about it that is nostalgic, familial, and comfortable for people.

Every time I talk about All My Children, why do you think everybody go ga-ga for it, when it’s been off the air for several years now?

EVA:  It speaks to people’s childhoods.  It speaks to how we grew up.  You can’t undo nostalgia.  You can’t.  It’s in the way we grew up, the things we loved, the things that we scheduled our lives around, the people we fell in love with on the shows that we watched, who we cared about and loved their storylines. I grew up watching All My Children, General Hospital, and Days of Our Lives.

It must have been a spectacular moment for you when you realized you were actually in Pine Valley and a member of the cast of All My Children then?

EVA:  It was amazing.  I was a fan when I got the show.  I was a straight up fan.  I fangirled walking through that dressing room hallway for the first time! I was trying to keep it in check, but you know … (Laughs)

So, in closing, you would say, “Thrilled to be nominated”?

EVA:  Yes.  So fun.  It has really been a rollercoaster of a couple of months here.  That nomination was literally the bright, shining spot in all of this.
