The Chew's Mario Batali says to NYMAG, "It's as if I chopped off Erica Kane's head!"

Uber-chef, Mario Batali, one of the co-hosts of All My Children’s replacement, The Chew, commented in a new feature with New York Magazine that he is somehow shocked and surprised by the public and soap fan backlash which took the town of Pine Valley off the daytime television map!
Batali stated, “Dude, they are so mad at me. It’s as if I had chopped off Erica Kane’s head. They’re not happy, and they’re on the Twitter-sphere, and they’ve got beautiful vocabularies.” Batali even let out to the reporter that the soap fans attack him in person, too, calling the show The Spew.
The chef also says he tries to placate the fans by promising to bring Susan Lucci on as a guest, and explaining that, “It wasn’t a Mario Batali decision. It was an ABC-TV decision. I say, ‘I’m just a pawn in the game.’ ”
Does he really think bringing on Susan Lucci as a guest on The Chew is not somehow inappropriate?

‘All My Children’ Movie Writers for Lifetime Revealed: Ron Carlivati, Jamey Giddens and Leo Richardson
This week began and as reported with a spotlight article on Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos and how their production entity, Milojo, has been teeing up the All My Children reboot with Lifetime.
The L.A. Times featured the married couple, co-hosts of Live with Kelly and Mark, and former All My Children cast members (where they met and fell in love) about their plans to bring two All My Children movies to Lifetime and how they are working with the Agnes Nixon estate to make it come to fruition,
On Wednesday, it was revealed by Daytime Confidential, that All My Children reboot producer, Andrew Stearn handpicked none other than Ron Carlivati (ex-head writer, One Life to Live, General Hospital and Days of our Lives) and Jamey Giddens (who is the new co-head writer of The Young and the Restless, following his tenures on the writing teams of Beyond the Gates and Days of Our Lives), as the two scribes who will bring the first of two of Kelly and Mark’s All My Children movies to the page.

RON CARLIVATI AND JAMEY GIDDENS CONFIRM THEIR BOARDING THE ALL MY CHILDREN MOVIE PROJECT
The second installment is said to be written by primetime writer Leo Richardson whose credits include: Star, Katy Keene and more recently the Penn Badgley (ex-Phillip Chancellor IV, The Young and the Restless) starring series, You.
Richardson also wrote for three years on the U.K.’s long-running soap, EastEnders. All My Children revival fans will recall Richardson’s name was attached as the writer for the first incarnation of the All My Children movies, entitled, Pine Valley.
Ron Carlivati took to X and confirmed he is indeed boarding the All My Children movie project. Carlivati shared, “So excited to share this news! Thanks to Andrew Stearn, Kelly Ripa, Mark Consuelos, Albert Bianchini and the Agnes Nixon estate for entrusting Jamey Giddens and me with the first of two planned All My Children movies for Lifetime! Stay tuned!”

Jamey Giddens confirmed DC’s announcement by taking to his account on X and expressing, “I’ve been booked and busy in 2026. Thanks to Andrew Stearn, the Agnes Nixon estate, Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos for entrusting Ron Carlivati, and me with the first of two planned All My Children movies for Lifetime!”
Some fans seemed to question how Giddens could be writing for the first All My Children movie at Lifetime, when he is the new co-head writer at The Young and the Restless with Dan O’Connor. Jamey answered that head on via X and explained, “We turned in our All My Children script months ago. My sole focus as of this past Monday, is Genoa City, Wisconsin! #YR”
ERICA KANE, MARIA SANTOS AND HAYLEY AND MATEO SANTOS TO APPEAR IN THE ALL MY CHILDREN MOVIE REVIVAL?
In the planned stories, Susan Lucci’s Erica Kane and Eva LaRue’s Maria Santos will be two characters whose lives we will get to see for the first time since the series was canceled by ABC back in 2011 after 41 years on the air. As well, Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos confirmed they will make brief appearances on-screen; one could assume as Hayley and Mateo Santos.
“It’d be wonderful to give the fans something that they’ve been yearning for so many years,” shared Mark Consuelos to the LA Times. “All My Children gave me my family. I met my wife there. It gave me my start in the business. It gave us so much. It would be a dream to be able to give back.”

‘All My Children’ Revival Updates: Lifetime EVP Speaks on Why Proposed Movies are Great Fit, Mark Consuelos Wants To ‘Give Back’ to Fans
The All My Children revival via movies at Lifetime is still in the works from former series stars and marrieds, Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos, through their production company, Milojo.
The co-hosts of Live with Kelly and Mark were featured this week in a Los Angeles Times article which detailed their efforts to bring some of the citizens of Pine Valley back to your screens.
As previously reported, and reaffirmed by the L.A. Times, the All My Children movies will be set in the present day and focus on what beloved characters such as Erica Kane (Susan Lucci) and Maria Santos Gray (Eva LaRue) are doing now. In addition, Kelly Ripa confirmed that she and Mark Consuelos will also appear on screen briefly most likely appearing in their signature soap roles as Hayley and Mateo Santos.

ALL MY CHILDREN MOVIES BRING NOSTALGIA THAT CAN BE MADE TO FEEL NEW AGAIN
Elaine Frontain Bryant, executive vice president and head of programming for A&E, Lifetime, and Lifetime Movie Network said of the All My Children reboot, “Lifetime is always interested in shows that kind of tap into a powerful nostalgia that can be made fresh for today’s audience. There’s a whole generation of women that have missed these stories and these characters.”
As for working with Kelly and Mark on the Lifetime movie versions of the soap, “They’re exactly the kind of partners you want at a brand,” expressed Bryant. “They’re trusted voices because every day they’re talking to their audience, which, a lot of times, is our audience. They bring a real credibility and have an authentic point of view. You meet Kelly and Mark and kind of what you see is what you get, and I think they bring that same authenticity to their development standards.”
Albert Bianchini, executive producer for Milojo, says he knows All My Children is so wildly popular with the fans of daytime. That was punctuated when seeing it in person, and how the energy was off the charts back in January of 2025 when Kelly participated along with Susan Lucci, former head writer, Lorraine Broderick and casting director, Judy Blye Wilson in a conversation with Andy Cohen at the 92nd Street Y in New York City.

“I’ve never seen a crowd like that in my life. People were lined up around the block, recalled the Bianchini. “Everyone wanted to know, ‘When is (All My Children) coming back? We want more.’ We got to see that in real life and Kelly got to feel it in real life, and it made so much sense. I just know that the minute it gets out in the world, people will want more and more and more. There’s just a love there.”
Kelly Ripa added that they are, “working closely with Bob and Sarah Nixon, who are also serving as producers.” She recalled, “She (Agnes Nixon) was so far ahead of her time. She covered topics that weren’t being covered. It was extraordinary the audiences that the show drew, and she served them real stories that were affecting Americans across the country but weren’t necessarily being represented anywhere.”
“It’d be wonderful to give the fans something that they’ve been yearning for so many years,” shared Mark Consuelos. “All My Children gave me my family. I met my wife there. It gave me my start in the business. It gave us so much. It would be a dream to be able to give back.”
THE CANCELLATION AND STOPS AND STARTS OF ALL MY CHILDREN REBOOTS
All My Children aired on ABC from 1970 to 2011. It got a second chance at life when Prospect Park resurrected the show and brought it to The OnLine Network and Hulu for one season in 2013.
Recently, the series made a return through the estate of Agnes Nixon and is streaming internationally on BEONDTV and through their partnership with PlutoTV Canada with episodes starting in 1995. Fans hope original episodes will some day soon be available in the U.S. as well, but that could prove more difficult since ABC owns the rights to the episodes stateside.
Now 13 years later, while there is no word yet on a definitive production start date to the two movies at Lifetime, all the people involved seemed determined to make it come to life.

Starting on May 1, All My Children fans in Canada will be able to see classic episodes of the beloved former ABC soap opera when they stream on Pluto TV Canada.
Pluto TV picked-up the All My Children Channel that the Nixon family has created in partnership with BEONDTV +. The show which aired for 41 years on ABC and ended on the network in 2011, had so many memorable storylines and characters; the least of which is the enduring run of Erica Kane played by soap icon, Susan Lucci.
As previously reported, starting with episodes from the year 1995, which was the 25th anniversary of the soap. Pluto TV Canada viewers will be able to catch 8 episodes on repeat per day. With the success of the venture, the Nixons are hopeful that they will bring viewers many more years of the show to come.

In addition, 0ne week ago, during Susan Lucci’s visit to Los Angeles promoting her book La Lucci, she was joined by her former Pine Valley castmates, Rebecca Budig (ex-Greenlee, AMC, now Taylor, B&B) and Eva LaRue (ex-Maria, AMC) and the trio posed for a pic. At that time, LaRue shared via Instagram, “NEW All My Children channel streaming classic episodes 24/7 now on Pluto TV Canada! Fingers crossed to watch soon on Pluto US.”
That was also confirmed this week by TV Watercooler’s Jeevan Brar who took to X and expressed, “The All My Children channel begins streaming this Friday, May 1 on Pluto TV Canada.

Are you and the other OLTL fans here mentally retarded or delayed? It was cancelled and its not coming back! There is nothing that any fan or group of fans in the entire world could do to change that. Are you so ridiculously idiotic not to understand that any show that replaced OLTL in its former time slot would cost so much less than it did to produce the soap! I’m not a big fan of “The Chew”, either, but those of us who are adults understand that the cast and crew of “The Chew” had nothing to do with the cancellation of OLTL, nor would any other new show. Grow up, already! Do you really think that if “The Chew” is cancelled that will somehow bring back your soap?If that is truly what you think then I suggest that your family quit marrying cousins or siblings, since the inbreeding is obviously having a detrimental effect on your intelligence!

I’m excited to see The Chew crash land! I’m actually quite surprised anyone ever liked or related to Mario Batali. Anything I’ve ever had the misfortune of tuning into that he was a part of proved that he is obviously an over-inflated, egotistical, and generally unpleasant individual. I don’t care for the other cast members on the show either, but he really makes it unwatchable. I can’t wait for the show to be cancelled. I’m a huge ABC soap fan and I think the entire situation is sad. Especially for all of the people put out of work for the drival of The Chew.

I agree that these are the most hideous people I have ever seen. They are so gross to look at. They are nasty looking and I wouldn’t touch anything they cook. I don’t know their names, but doesn’t that lady with those hideous glasses realize how hideous they are? And the bald guy with the huge gigantic mouth and teeth gives me the creeps and looks nasty. And the other guy Mario or whatever his name is, he’s always scratching his nose and then touching the food and they’re always licking their fingers. Gross! I would eat nothing from these unsanitary people. I just can’t stand any of them, they give me the creeps they’re so ugly.

I can understand The Chew cast feeling attacked. They are benefiting from the demise of AMC and they knew this was their time slot and the purpose of the show (to replace soaps) from the beginning. I am sorry for them, but I hope the show fails. My two bits folks, Mario is lucky to have a job. It is not his fault his opportunity came at the expense of a beloved show. However, his behaviour hasn’t help. He was condescending to soap fans in telling them get over it; soaps are done etc. He is backpedalling because he kind of put down Susan Lucci in the past and she amazingly is still to this day deemed a classy and beautiful person like her fellow soap colleagues. I hope Susan does the Spew, Chew or whatever. Why just so we can see more of her. But I hope Mr. Frons and ABC then realize the next day with a collapse of ratings that soaps and Susan Lucci are iconic and should not be tampered with. Soap fans it is important though you show the support; some how we lost it and the ratings fell on all the soaps.
Marion, if you want good recipes, go to the food network or to the cooking channel. I haven’t watched the chew aka “The Screw” in my household but I did see things posted on facebook and the recipes sounded gross and I have cooked for over 45 years and am a registered foodie. Don’t waste your time watching these losers.

I am no longer a fan of ABC and have not even turned that channel on nor will I since they took All My Children off the air. It hasn’t been as hard as I thought it might be. The only thing left to watch on ABC was the news and I certainly do not need the depression the news brings. So Chew On That ABC !! To many other channels to watch and your ABC channnel is not one of them !!
I agree! I was looking forward to Castle, Greys, and Private Practice but when they took threw my soaps out without so much as backward glance and put this worthless show on I decide enough of ABC I will not watch a channel that thinks so little of it’s viewers.
They never took into account the people that tape (do they say that anymore?) the soaps cause duh… they work during the day or the people that watch Soapnet.

To Mario Batali I say: Don’t worry, THIS soap fan doesn’t take it personally that your show is replacing a story that has been cherished by viewers for decades. And I’m sure YOU won’t take it personally that I would sooner serve road kill coated in a breading of cat litter than EVER watch your show (and I’m a Days of Our Lives fan). So when we refer to your show as The Spew, just remember… it has nothing to do with you and everything to do with ABC.

First of all, telling a soap fan to “GET OVER IT” is like putting a bomb in our mouths! We DO blow up! Secondly, I am also on the “Twitter-sphere” and the language is the usual that goes around. Some more so than others. That’s life Mario! GET OVER IT! You replaced an icon of a show. We said we would not support you because we are SOAP FANS NOT FOOD FANS! Again, GET OVER IT! You lost! His producer said in a interview before the chew was on air, that people who are soap fans wasted a hour a day by watching them. I am not wasting a hour of my day by watching the chew!!

I’ve watched AMC since I was a kid, okay I admit it, we would yell at our moms to get us home from school as fast as possible so we wouldn’t miss a moment of Dark Shadows and would pretend to be ill so we could stay home that day to watch AMC.
I grew up watching those shows, for some reason it seems we stay loyal to the shows we watched as children for my family it was ABC (even my kids when home only watch, or watched ABC) When I went to college I was one of the kids that managed to somehow have a break in classes so I could watch my soaps.
I remember feeding my kids to the soaps.
I don’t think ABC or the members of the Chew realize what they have done. While we knew that these people were actors and the story lines make believe, we learned things, those soap operas took up ideas and causes that a lot of the country were grappling with, exposed it for what it was made us see that it wasn’t so awful to love someone of the same sex, that drugs were bad, that bad things happen out there and we need to stand up against them.
Yea sometimes they were silly, sad, sexually explicit (come on admit it 🙂 ) funny and poignant but they helped us walk away from a bad day, bad week or a bad life for just an hour.
In this world where the boardroom and the dollar bill is the God some kneel to now, it is forgotten that to most of us while we have to have that dollar bill we don’t worship it. We put people and their needs and what they care about first. Sorry ABC that the altar you kneel to isn’t the people that support you but the shareholders. I hope the heads of ABC someday sit down and watch the old soaps the trailblazers and realize that they lost the heart of the people.
Maybe soap watchers are mellow dramatic but so be it, we lived loved and laughed in Pine Valley and Llanview and now that we have no were to go we hit the internet and let them alllll know how we feel!
Very well stated! Longevity and loyalty seem to have no meaning or relevance to ABC. I have enjoyed AMC since the beginning and miss my “escape” to Pine Valley each weekday afternoon. I am hoping that the soaps can be saved–if not then I’m done with daytime television.

Ditto to Vicki’s reply….Best explanation of this I have read….that is exactly what Soaps do for us. That one hour to laugh,cry or whatever your feeling at that time and have that escape. There are plenty of cooking shows for viewers that prefer that type of show…..but soaps are few and far between and many of us have committed decades to these shows. It is very sad.

I could never support a show that tell’s soap fan’s to get over it and any way we are all supost to be on diet’s so we don’t need you cooking show they say we american’s are to fat so why do i need to watch some fat guy so me how to cook and stay fat give me back my soap don’t need to learn how to make soup my gradmother showed me that alond time ago.
Put the whole cast of AMC, OLTL, AND GH on the show and I still wouldn’t watch it. The Spew is just what it Frons wanted – cheap, poorly thought out television. And the ratings so far have reflected that. Good luck with The Revulsion when that comes out. And maybe ABC should seriously consider hiring someone who can put more than two words together. Or is one of the VP’s toddlers in charge of coming up with those highly creative program names?
Ok, i would like to start off by saying i am NOT a soap fan and dont care either way if they are canceled but this Dude is a freaking fat joke. He show is completely stupid and boring, and who is going to take advice from for dude that wears orange crocks with socks on? Who ever came up with this new show concept is a retard and needs to be fired. Who are these people that ABC hires to come up with these stupid show ideas. Your post was the best I have read. You are not a die hard soap fan, but you observed the show and found it to be totally stupid as I have! I grew up on the Soaps and have watched All My Children for ever. Soap Operas are like Baseball and Football an American Icon. The type of replacement that ABC has chosen to make them money is so out there!! I can not believe to this day that this was their choice! I have tried to watch it a couple of times and it is so hard to watch!! To be ohnest I have never heard of these Chefs nor Dr. Ozz daughter. The only one i have seen is the what not to wear man. This reality TV has got to go!! Every channel you turn to it is on!! Now ABC replaces a Soap like All My Children with a man that is a Whoopi want to be!! The View is bad TV also!! I read yesterday Ty was going to be the host on the other show that replaces One Life To LIve!! Good Gosh what is ABC thinking?? I really like TY but not for another hour. he needs to stay his behind on Extreme Makeover and not risk the back lash!! ABC has become totally ridiculous!! This just didn’t start with cancelling the soaps it started with the Election of Obama! They were not reporting News fairly and let him get away with every thing!! What has happened to them??

You are so right Bonnie. They did not cover the election fairly or unbiased , or at least have any balance in the matter. I had watched ABC news exclusively for 27 years, but I got so tired of seeing the reports act like they were going to have orgasms as they gushed about Obama that I decided not to watch the news on ABC anymore.
I have not watched the chew but I can tell you the commercials were hard enough to watch with the woman that has the red glasses and the bug eyes, and Mario Batali who looks like a clown with his lack of style and orange crocs. The commercials were hard enough on the eyes.
It just amazes me how clueless ABC Disney is. They gave absolute power to the dim-witted Brian Frons and he ran with it. He axed two beloved, long-running and iconic shows, he alienated a huge fanbase and—adding insult to injury—he tried to force-feed his viewers substandard trash as replacement. Bad idea. Susan Lucci put it well when she referred to Frons as having a ” fatal combination of ignorance and arrogance.” That just about says it all.
As for Mario, he’s clueless as well. Too stupid to understand that he himself helped contribute to the enormous backlash by insulting the soap audience the way he did. His smart-ass “Get over it!” comments didn’t go over very well, in retrospect. And now he wonders what went wrong. This man may know how to cook but he sure doesn’t know how to think! Apparently The Chew is ABC’s recipe for a total train wreck: an idiot in charge of programming who comes up with a very dumb idea, which a second idiot is told to implement. And it doesn’t help that the second idiot can’t keep his mouth shut and that he continues to “spew” inappropriate statements that only make the situation worse.
I have not and will not ever watch THE SPEW…or anything ever again on ABC. I have even stopped watching ABC evening news…switched to CBS. Anybody who says people don’t have time to watch an hour show are just plain ignorant. I have recorded All My Children every day since 1983 and watch it during dinner. We do not need another cooking show, especially with idiots like these. I can’t wait for The Spew to be cancelled due to poor ratings, and i hope Brian Frons gets everything he deserves!!!!!! I can not find 1 interesting person hosting The Chew. In fact they kind of get on my nerves. Mario and all seem so hyper. Way to loud talk. I really get ill watching all the food and all of them eating. I knew this was not what the public/viewers were or are wanting.

This is the most important message to get out there…DO NOT WATCH THE SHOW IT DOES GIVE THEM RATINGS.I am so proud of the soap fans for sticking togrther and making a statement.I wonder if any of the AMC actors know the support that is out here for them.This weeks numbers are on the Chew message board on ABC…if they have not deleted it.All negative comments are being deleted as soon as they can get to them.The numbers are even lower than last week but it has been said that ABC is changing press releases and dancing around the true bottom line numbers.
Daytime fans are a commited breed of television watchers and ABC took a dump on us and we will not stand for another insult. Remove a soap for a misfit group of so called chefs you have two channels devoted to your job ABC should have left our soaps alone. And it is not going to matter what they replace this garbage with we all vow that anything that ABC runs in those time slots will fail. Karma is a woman b@#ch and you will feel our venom. The Chew is a joke. The ratings are proof of it. ABC is going to pay for it, when they shouldn’t mess around with ABC soap fans. By November sweeps, everyone will be receiving pink slips.
I am really not enjoying this show. I will not be watching any longer. I try to give things a chance but this is horrible!! I never have like watching Mario, he’s a very hyper man.

This man is every bit as responsible as Frons & Sweeney. We will NOT be quiet and we will NOT forget and we will NOT stop celebrating the crappy reception and ratings the SPEW is getting… I’m praying it doesn’t make it through the Fall and ABC reverses the cancellation of ONE LIFE TO LIVE, which consistently comes in at #3 (almost #2) in overall ratings and #1 or #2 in other key demographics. If the SPEW is doing so poorly, how does ABC honestly think ONE LIFE’s replacement show is going to do??? Not so well is my prediction.. and that’s NOT just my opinion!!!!

This show is horrible! Mario is a loud, spastic, very badly dressed man. In todays times of struggle for so many of us, the last thing I want to watch is all these noisy people cooking and eating. Some of us have a hard enough time getting some hamburger helper on the table. Who cares about centerpieces and crap. We are out here trying to make ends meat!!
