‘The Haves and the Have Nots’ Gavin Houston Comes to General Hospital

Courtesy/OWN

On yesterday’s episode of General Hospital, Portia Robinson (Brook Kerr) received some surprise visitors just in time for her upcoming wedding to Curtis (Donnell Turner) on Valentine’s Day.

GH introduced Portia’s brother, Zeke, played by none other than Gavin Houston formerly one of the series stars of Tyler Perry’s OWN soapy drama, The Haves and the Have Nots.

Interestingly enough, this is not Houston’s first turn on GH.  Back in 2010, he appeared on the ABC soap opera as a CSI tech named Sly Thomas who was helping solve the Claudia Zacchara (Sarah Brown) murder case.  Houston actually started his daytime career back in 2002 as Guiding Light’s Remy Boudreau.

Arriving on the scene for the Portia and Curtis nuptials, was also Portia’s father, Dr. Sterling Robinson played by Ricco Ross, who had a recurring role on P-Valley.

So, while Sterling and Portia went into the medical profession, it seems from indications from Trina (Tabyana Ali), that her uncle went in his own direction.  What could Zeke be involved with?  Stay tuned.

What do you think of GH bringing in more of the Robinson family? Did you enjoy Gavin’s performances on ‘The Haves and the Have Nots’? What line of work could Zeke be into on GH? Comment below.

I guess we’ll know on Friday if he’s on contract (or not). Guess is he’ll be working for Selina which may lead to a clandestine relationship with Brad.

Wishful casting – Debbi Morgan in an extended guest spot as Portia and Zeke’s mom.

He did play a gay character on “The Have and Have Nots” so perhaps a new love interest for Brad… let’s hope.

I hope Brad sticks around. He only had Britt to interact with and now she’s gone. And his ex-husband has seemingly disappeared.

Much rather see Lucas come back than adding a newbie. Whether or not Lucas reunites with Brad or not. He’s a Spencer by adoption & a Jerome by birth, not to mention a doctor, so there’s a far better case for keeping him around.

Yes he was great on the Haves and Haves, but what about another younger AA love interest,(m/f) I’m not homophobic but we’re also under represented on the daytime screen. Or maybe someone black for Trina or Aunt Stella. Please?!

hi Tori

I am not hetrophobic, but what does “AA love interest” mean? And if it does mean “male/female” why not just say it that way.

The ever growing “alphabet soup” of sexual orientation is just getting to be a little much. Can’t we, at this point, just be “a human being loving another human being” I know that sounds very simple, but when we come right down to it…isn’t that all it is?

Hi Brian, I believe AA is for African American love interest. I understand what she is saying, because it seems to be happening quite a bit on other soaps as well. At one point it was said that African American couples do not generate a lot of interest from the soap fans. I totally disagree with that, because Angie and Jesse from All My Children and Neil and Drucilla from Y&R, shot down that myth!

I believe AA refers to Adam and Adam, as opposed to Adam and Eve.
I applaud your suggestion that we should call any relationship a human being loving another human being. The less we point out differences, the sooner they can cease to exist

LOL—That’s too funny. That’s what I thought, too. AA—Alcoholics Anonymous. Black, white, purple, sexual orientation? —makes no difference to me. People are people and as such, I have my faves and not so faves. If I have to see one more amateurish, “coy” look from this Trina again, or listen to her wavering sotto-voce uttering , or see the infinite amount of teeth when she smiles/speaks? Oh, man… I’ll; I’ll—I don’t know what I’ll do. LOL—-and, it has nothing to do with the color of her skin—she simply makes mine crawl. I wish Sydney would return. I miss her spunk… Read more »

I know I’m late to the discussion but this kid that plays Trina is annoying and very hard to watch. For starters she doesn’t look like either of her parents whomever they may be. Sydney looked every bit of Curtis’ daughter which I suspected from the beginning. If Sydney isn’t coming back can they at least get a better actress and one where we can see what the appeal is for Spencer.

Hi, Faith–welcome… I completely understand what you say. I don’t watch nuTrina—I just can’t. It’s not her fault. She tried for the part and was hired.,I’m starting to sound like a broken record, as the old saying goes. Ali does not fit at all. Sydney lit up the screen—and the closeness she had with Ava was authentic. The bond they shared was so natural and sweet—almost like mother and daughter.. Also, the easy camaraderie between her and her coeds was tangible. I really enjoyed all their scenes together. The vibe is simply lacking with Ali—no rapport with either cast members… Read more »

Sorry, but another Black family is a welcome addition for Black viewers like me. We have been faithful viewers for years even when nobody on the soaps looked like us. Marshall’s story line was very relevant to the mental health issues that plaque our nation right now and keeping GH current is important. Additional Black characters makes Port Charles look like a real city in the U.S. Portia and Curtis are Black and their wedding attendants should reflect that fact. (RIP Sonya Eddy, we miss you).

Sorry; I don’t agree. On almost every show, every film, the ONLY diversity I see added are black characters. Whether it’s in TV commercials, film, remakes of shows AND complaints about past shows which were fabulous. FRIENDS being blamed for not having black characters? Sex In The City? Those shows were written by people about their experiences and the people they hung with. They shouldn’t have to be apologizing for that. There were barely any Jewish characters on TV or film when I was growing up; still aren’t. The last Jewish character on GH was Sonny’s accountant Bernie (who also had a twin brother named Benny who previously had the same job) They actually showed him observing Hanukkah during one of the helliday episodes. Sadly he was literally shot in the back by the Valentini regime, the first time they threw Jason under the bus in 2012. I always thought it was curious that the entire Zacchara family was portrayed by Jewish actors, but they kept them an Italian mob family. Meyer Lansky & Bugsy Siegel were fairly big names in mob history, so there’s no reason why… Read more »

I cringed each time Bernie was on; they couldn’t have written a more stereotypical character. As I mentioned in another comment, so many GH actors ARE actually Jewish: Brandon Barash, Sean Kanan, Rene Sofar, Amanda Setton, Stuart Damon, Tamara Braun, Matt Cohen, etc…yet they just won’t write them as Jewish characters, but instead choose to do a caricature/stereotype in Bernie.

And you’re right, too, about the Zaccaria’s on GH. They were supposed to be an Italian mob family, but they were played by all Jewish actors; why not make them a Jewish mob family? LOL and smh…

Hi, Satan—-I wasn’t watching at that time of the Zaccara family( no “h” ). I’d just like to add that Italians get pretty riled when they see their own constantly being portrayed as mafiosi on most shows. Exactly, Angela. There are many ethnicities ignored and/or underrepresented. As an Italian American, I was shocked to learn that Milo Ventimiglia’s character on his new show has Italian surname. Most Italians in media seem to be constantly eating or trying to be Mafioso. Same with Jewish characters… either eating or acting like the world hasn’t changed since FIDDLER ON THE ROOF. Parry Shen’s Brad is Asian..he’s also talented, sexy, and needs more interaction than Ms. Wu — another Asian gangster stereotype, though I LOVE the actress. Soaps are trying but still have a way to go.

Agree Soaphound. Stereotypes prevail.I was just mentioning in another comment here (and I’m not sure how many noticed this when it aired several years ago) but when Hayden reminisced about her father (who she later found out was her adoptive father) it was about the wonder Passovers they had which obviously implied he was Jewish, AND he was in jail for a ponzi scheme!!! So they decide to make a character who doesn’t exist,Jewish, and then say he’s in jail for a Bernie Madoff-type crime. OMG! I was livid! smh… And you’re right; the Mafia stereotypes are rampant for Italians,… Read more »

While the cast remains quite bloated, it is necessary from time to time to add related characters (regardless of their ethnicity). It would be strange for Portia to get married and not have any family there. Heck, it’s really weird that we still don’t know Jordan’s maiden name after being on the show for almost a decade. (I’ll say it’s Simpson so that when she married both Tommy & Curtis it was an Ashford & Simpson nuptial – even though those relationships were not solid as a rock). Taken over? Seriously? Let’s see… Sonny, Carly and Nina have the biggest episode counts and are driving story. Multiple characters from the Quartermaine, Corinthos, Scorpio and Cassadine families remain front and center. Trina is in an “A” storyline but otherwise… Portia & Curtis are a B storyline which is now getting heavy play with the wedding upon us. Marshall is in a “C” level story. Jordan and TJ are “talk to’s” without their own plots. Stella appears sporadically but makes those moments count. Taggert will fade away if he’s not Trina’s bio dad. They could do that and also build on existing GH history. For example, what ever happened to Brian & Claudia Phillips? They were friends with Laura & Scotty back in their college days (late 70s).

Where are Tom & Simone Hardy these days? First “mixed-race” couple in Port Charles, if a Devil remembers correctly. Their son Tommy Jr was the original “TJ” (no relation to the current one, of course)

And why have the Wards completely disappeared? One branch of that family tree were also Quartermaines, of course

OG Steve
Guest
OG Steve

The actor who played Bryan passed away a while back. They could’ve tied Jordan or Portia to Claudia somehow.

Weren’t Tom and Simone divorced by the time Matthew Ashford (ironic) took over the role? Seem to recall them trying him and Felicia before she got with Mac. Elizabeth mentioned Tommy Jr a couple years ago. Frank obviously had no plans to bring him on as TJ Ashford and Marshall’s oldest son were given the name Thomas about 10 years ago.

The Wards have been forgotten except when Maya’s ELQ voting shares come up from time to time.

Right; let’s keep adding more the “diversity” which means more black characters while there’s only two Asians who are rarely on, not one Jewish character, Muslim character, and I think now we have one occasional Latin character. And while we add more and more black characters let’s get rid of legacy characters like Nikolas. Just change the name of the show and be done with it.

Who are the more and more Black Characters that you keep referencing? So Portia’s Dad and brother came to town. So what? Maybe it’s short term. My point is the show was about white Christians (Catholic? Protestant?) as all soaps seem to have been since their beginning. The only diversity I’ve seen in all these years is the addition of black characters. Yes, we get an occasional Asian, Hispanic, or gay couple, but that’s about it. GH now has Curtis, Portia, Jordan, Marshall,Brick, Aunt Stella, Trina, (we had the wonderful Epipfany), Felix, several nurses, TJ, Phyllis, had Lenny, and now we have a new black cop (which we read was coming aboard), and they keep bringing on more. Angela, I hesitated to speak up on this issue, but I think your further detailed explanation of your thoughts is most illuminating and helpful. I can gather you have no intent on pitting one minority against another. Each minority sadly faces its own struggles, including proper representation in the media. My memory is a bit hazy on the details, but in the late 60s/early 70s, there was a prominent Jewish family on One Life to Live: the Siegels, husband Dave Siegel, an attorney — okay, at least he wasn’t an accountant; wife Eileen who was Catholic; and their children, Tim… Read more »

Oh Jamesj75, THANK YOU! I LOVED David Siegel; he was my favorite character on OLTL. The great Allen Miller! Did you know he was also a renowned acting teacher and early mentor and supporter (with first wife Anita) of my idol, Barbra Streisand? Wow, what great days. As I recall, David was married to (Irish Catholic) Eileen Riley, sister of Joe Riley who I thought was a real dreamboat. Funny, I was never bothered even in the 60s about an interfaith marriage. While some others may not exactly grasp your passion for a viable concern, there are many here that can relate. However, it doesn’t have to come at the expense of members of other groups that have been traditionally not highlighted.

We all want to see ourselves represented positively out in the greater universe, but especially in entertainment. It’s one of the main reasons I cannot follow The Bold & The Beautiful. How does a show revolving around fashion in Los Angeles not have a major gay character?

Keep sticking up for representation. Eventually things may change.

Kidney transplant recipients (Joss) are not eligible to donate bone marrow. Able-bodied children are not able to give consent to voluntary medical procedures and a parent may not volunteer their child thus ruling out Wiley and James.

I’m a Devil, not a doctor… but if Nina (allegedly Willow’s mother) is not a match, then the odds of a great aunt (Liesl) being a better match are roughly the same as a blizzard here in Hell on Saturday.

Not saying that’s not how they will write it…. just saying if they do, it makes no sense at all. However, I can’t wrap my head around a 60 year old show finally giving 6 Black characters worthwhile storylines and ppl having a problem with it. The idea that it’s “too much” is laughable. The criticism is ridiculous and a terrible look.

It’s not a “terrible” look. What’s a terrible look is not thinking it’s important to add representation of others than just black people to a show proving its “diversity.” The show seems to have gone out of its way to not feature one Jewish person; not even a Jewish DOCTOR, in a show that has the word Hospital in its title. (And I never said the words, “too much.”) If a black person was resentful that there were ZERO black characters on, and TJ, Portia, Jordan, Curtis, Trina, Marshall, Stella, Felix, Brick, Taggert, Phyllis, Lenny, in addition to (the beloved,… Read more »

I only hope you are this adamant and vocal when the next Dex, Cody, Esme etc. comes to town. If you are not then your argument needs reevaluating.

Are you purposely going out of your way to not understand what I said several times over? It’s not that difficult. I’m truly not sure what you’re not getting. If the show wants to keep it the way it started? One race, one religion; go for it. If it’s going to “add diversity?” Then add characters of DIFFERENT DIVERSE backgrounds; not 10-15 & growing black characters, and zero others with the exception of two Asian characters barely seen and one transgender person.”

Glad you think 45 (Gavin) is still young! What, Brick and Marshall don’t fit the bill, lol.

Phyllis needs some lovin’, but with Epiphany now gone, they’ll probably try Phyllis & Marshall together.

Best option is for Stella to get her groove back with a new fine man of color.

Do you remember her old friend whose wife was in the same facility as Sonny’s dad? Maybe he’s become available.

There have been a few tv shows with a Jewish story line? But they never last.

Well, they do pretty well with the sitcoms. Seinfeld was the biggest show of the 90s, and is still all over the place in reruns & streaming. And the Goldbergs have been on the air for 10 years now, though I wouldn’t be surprised if they end the show after this season. They lost two major characters in less than a year (George Segal died & Jeff Garlin got fired for being a dumbass, apparently) and it’s really tanked the show quality. On the other horn, there was a recent show on Amazon Prime called “The Hunters” which was very… Read more »

I think it’s greaat!! GH needs more black people on the show for sure!!! I want to see more black couples. Not just couples of color. But like Black Love. On the show. And Black villains. It’s like they don’t think we could be art enough to set some stuff up or be crazy. Shoot like Baldwin said “to be black in America is to be in a content state of rage” lets use that for the small screen. Man the should let me write for this show….I would create a whole villain storyline behind Portias family! Trust!!

Sorry to see Gavin go, but I guess others are glad that we aren’t having any additional characters, I only wish they could have found room for this one. Well, the truth will set you free they say, ha, ha, not this time. Old Stella had no business running her mouth, what’s new, huh? She did say ” it wasn’t her story to tell” all the while she kept telling Trina to have her mother spill her guts that will effect the rest of her life. It sure didn’t look like Trina will forgive her mother anytime soon, Curtis and… Read more »

GH’s Gavin Houston Teases How Zeke’s Love Life Is About to Take an Unexpected Turn

Next week on General Hospital, Gavin Houston returns as Portia’s (Brooke Kerr) brother, Zeke.  When viewers last saw Zeke, he was in Port Charles for Portia’a wedding to Curtis (Donnell Turner) back in February.

Fast-forward to June and Zeke is back. However, from the looks of it, Zeke might find love this time around, or is it something more casual?

According to preview in the latest issue of Soap Opera Digest, when Zeke settles in at the Metro Court he grabs a drink at the pool, and while there sees a very attractive woman.

Photo: ABC

Houston shared on the encounter, “He sees this attractive woman and tries to pick her up by being his fun-loving, charming self.  He buys her a drink and there is definitely some chemistry there.”

However, apparently this woman is someone who his sister, Portia, knows well.  The smart money is that he is hitting on Jordan, who has just walked out on a conversation with her ex-husband, Curtis.  This, following the two kissing and Curtis going back to his marriage with Zeke’s sister. But could the woman Zeke is impressed by be someone else?

Share your thoughts on Zeke’s return, and who you think will be the woman he is interested in via the comment section below.

Pride Month Celebrating LGBTQ+ Soap Supercouples: Nuke, Kish, Otalia & WilSon … Which Stands the Test of Time?

June is Pride Month, the time when across the U.S and the world there are celebrations and commemorations to recognize all who identify as LGBTQ and their allies.

Daytime soap operas have had a rocky road when it comes to the representation of same-sex couples.  The soaps have been at one time leaders in portraying key social issues of our time, as well as treading lightly on other subjects, as to its concerns to ‘turn-off’ its core audiences.

When you look back at the groundbreaking first same-sex weddings, and the first gay kiss, the soaps have come far in some ways in their representations of gay characters, but there is always work to be done to serve and to shed light on the under-represented.

As we reflect back to the then and the now, which LGBTQ soap supercouple remains your favorite and had made a lasting impact? Let’s take a look at four duos who captivated many viewers.

Nuke  – Luke Snyder and Noah Mayer – As the World Turns

Van Hansis (Luke) and Jake Silbermann (Noah) were a key part of the evolution of, and representation of LGBTQ character on the soaps.  ‘Nuke’, as they were known as, became the first gay male soap couple to share an on-screen kiss back in 2007.  ATWT also became known as the first soap to depict a fully realized romantic male couple as an integral part of the show.  There was plenty of backlash along the way for the long-awaited kiss to happen, but when it did, the show moved forward to tell their love story.

Otalia – Olivia Spencer and Natalia Rivera Aitoro – Guiding Light

When Crystal Chappell (Olivia) and Jessica Leccia (Natalia) began to play the love story of Otalia, they had to show their affection by a kiss on the head, or holding hands.  It took quite some time for GL to move forward to have two women, two moms, no less, share a lip lock. The complicated love story featured Natalia being conflicted to face her true romantic feelings for Olivia, because of her value system and religions upbringing, and that made this all the more riveting and frustrating at the same time.  In the end, the rabid fan base for this duo was so great that Chappell wound up creating her own series, Venice, to honor and serve them, remaining one of the LGBTQ communities greatest allies.

Kish – Kyle Lewis and Oliver Fish – One Life to Live

In 2009, One Life to Live’s Kyle Lewis (Brett Claywell) was an out lab tech in Llanview, who back in college had a relationship with Officer Oliver Fish (Scott Evans).  It imploded when Oliver denied he was gay.  For years, Oliver remained in the closet, before finally coming out to himself and Kyle.

Kish had been a big success with the media and One Life’s gay audience. LGBTQ-advocacy groups honored the couple and the story.  However, Kish was cut short when the network felt that the data showed that the storyline was not resonating with the show’s core audience.

WilSon – Will Horton and Sonny Kiriakis – Days of our Lives

Days of our Lives delivered daytime’s first-ever gay male wedding in 2014, between Will (then played by Guy Wilson) and Sonny (then played by Freddie Smith).

In an interview with EW, Days of our Lives executive producer, Ken Corday shared on the union, “Will and Sonny have been together for a while and it was the natural progression of their love story. We didn’t feel like there was anything we could or couldn’t do, we treated them like any other couple on the canvas and continued to grow their romance as such.”

In addition, the coming out story of Will Horton was critically praised and noteworthy for the performances of Chandler Massey, who won three Daytime Emmys for his work in the Outstanding Younger Actor category 2012, 2013 and 2014.  Freddie Smith also won in the same category in 2015.  Will has been played over the years by Chandler Massey and Guy Wilson, while Sonny has been portrayed by Freddie Smith and Zach Tinker.

There have been several other key LGBTQ couples throughout the course of daytime history including All My Children’s Bianca (Eden Riegel) and Reese (Tamara Braun). These two characters were involved in the first same-sex lesbian wedding on daytime. Problem was … Reese kissed Zach (Thorsten Kaye) before the wedding, making this infuriating for viewers at home.

Other notable LGBTQ couples through the years have included: Bianca and Maggie on All My Children, Mariah and Tessa of The Young and the Restless played bv Camryn Grimes and Cait Fairbanks, Maya and Rick on The Bold and the Beautiful, Lucas and Brad on General Hospital and others.

Which couple do you think has had the most lasting impact on the history of LGBTQ representation on daytime soap operas? Share your thoughts in the comment section below.

GH’s Nicholas Chavez and Tabyana Ali to ‘Sprina’ Shippers: “Thank You For Not Only Being Fans, But Turning into Family”

The hottest young duo on daytime drama these days belongs to General Hospital.  The couple known as ‘Sprina’ played by Nicholas Chavez (Spencer) and Tabyana Ali (Trina), is being given plenty of non-stop intrigue and drama and romance, much to the delight of their fans, who just can’t get enough of them.

In the latest issue of Soap Opera Digest on newsstands everywhere Friday, Chavez and Ali weigh-in on all the latest developments and recent airshows including: the reading of Victor’s will, what to do about Esme and baby Ace, the action-adventure scenes in ‘Greenland’ and the Haunted Star, and most notably, that emotional leap from Trina into Spencer’s arms when he turned up alive!

Ali told SOD on her preparation for the moment: “I did a couple of jumps and held a baby, and that was about it!”

Chavez added, “That is my favorite ‘Sprina’ scene, Spencer is walking toward Trina and Trina breaks into a full sprint towards him, jumps into his arms and they kiss.  I’ve always wanted to do a moment like that, you know what I mean?” Ali said, “I really loved that scene, too. It was just so fulfilling.”

When addressing what each of them would like to say to their lively and constant fan base, Tabyana expressed; “I would just say we love you, we appreciate you, thank you for all of your support and thank you for not only being fans, but turning into family.”

Nick added, “I co-sign all of that. Every single word.”
