‘The Real Housewives of Potomac’s’ Gizelle Bryant Talks ‘Beyond the Gates’ Guest Spot, Reality vs. Soaps, and Returning to Spice Up Vernon Dupree’s Love Life (Exclusive)
On today’s Monday, December 1 episode of Beyond the Gates; two very familiar faces of Bravo ‘Real Housewives’ fans are in the house and at Fairmont Crest!
The Real Housewives of Potomac’s Gizelle Bryant and Dr Wendy Osefo play two country club members for the well-to-do and mix it up in scenes with none other than Lauren Buglioli (Vanessa McBride) and Karla Mosley (Dani Dupree). In the story, Vanessa’s business decisions are called into question and all the ladies have something to say about it.
Gizelle Bryant is taking on the role of Gloria Darwel and Michael Fairman TV spoke to the reality star who hopes to have a bright future in soaps. Currently, Bryant and Osefo can be seen in the 10th season of RHOP which dropped back in October.

Speaking on on her experience of taping ‘Real Housewives’ as opposed to Beyond the Gates, Bryant noted which is more challenging! “Well, clearly ‘Potomac,’ because it’s not scripted, and so you don’t ever know what’s going to happen, you don’t know what these ladies are going to say and how they’re going to act. Beyond the Gates and Fairmont Crest was like a walk in the park, in comparison to dealing with these ladies in ‘Potomac.'”
Bryant shared scenes with soap opera veteran Karla Mosley and Lauren Buglioli and she has nothing but high praise for her co-stars. “I had never met those ladies, and they were fantastic, by the way,” expressed Gizelle. “They really knew that these ‘reality people, don’t really know what they’re doing, and we’re going to help them. We’re going to hold their hand and walk them through this.’ It’s such a fast-paced today. It was like ‘Wow!’ They shoot 20-30 scenes in a day.”
Both Gizelle and Wendy had each other as companions for the trip to Atlanta to tape scenes on Beyond the Gates. “We had a great day together, because we flew in on the tape day. We knocked out our scene, and then we flew home together, recalled Gizelle. “So, yes, we had fun, but both of us were like, ‘We think we’re doing a lot over here on the reality side to pull together a season,’ but if you spend a day on a soap opera, you see that they are really working non-stop.”
On Beyond the Gates, Bryant’s character, Gloria Darvell is craving to go back to Fairmont Crest to start some drama and some foolishness. As Gizelle explained, “So in our scenes, we go into the country club. They’re trying to get us to call this 1-800 number, which is her new business which we call, and it ends up being a sex situation, and we’re like, ‘absolutely not. We are high society. We do not engage in sex workers.'” I do need to have Gloria come back, to go shopping with the other ladies, get drunk, we need to do all kinds of things. Being a villainess on a soap opera, that’s a dream, that’s goals!”
This season on The Real Housewives of the Potomac, Gizelle’s courtroom drama has been front and center stage involving contesting her late father’s will, with whom the reality star believes was tampered with by his wife. She states that the fraudulent will leaves her and her children with nothing, and has been intent on getting what she believes her father intended for them to have. But, how did she feel when the reality series producers and cameras were going to follow her to court?
“When they told me that they were coming with me, I said ‘no,’ so there was a little pushback from them,” recalled Bryant. “Finally I said, ‘fine.’ It is obviously a sensitive subject, and it doesn’t just involve me. I have siblings. It involves them as well, and they did not sign up to be on reality television, or have their business on reality television. I was being cautious from that perspective, but it’s a huge story in my life, so it was only fair to show it.”
“Beyond the Gates is scripted, so that’s a sweet spot,” said Gizelle. “I can be on TV and not talk about my life! On reality TV, you kind of go in blind. You don’t really know how it’s going to be edited. You know what happened in that moment, but you don’t know how it’s going to be put together. But, that’s what you sign up for. The trick is to make sure that you don’t do anything that you regret.”

Is Gizelle now a fan of the Dupree and the Richardson family drama? “Well, I’m going to watch now. My mother is a huge fan of Beyond the Gates. She’s been watching since the first episode. She was so excited when I got this role, because she thinks that now I’ve made it! In her mind, now I’m a success. I’ve been on television for over a decade, but that didn’t matter. (Laughs)”
Beyond the Gates has been nailing it in the hair, make-up and wardrobe departments since premiering on-screen. The way they represent Black excellence and more is not lost on Bryant. “They have an A+ glam team at Beyond the Gates, and the lighting is right. You know, a lot of times, people don’t know how to light for Black performers,” shared Gizelle. “But on this show, the lighting is beautiful, glam is beautiful, wardrobe, everything was amazing. And to see great representations of Black families is fantastic, 100%. Shows like ‘Real Housewives of Potomac,’ Married to Medicine, those shows are the only ones that are showing Black women in a positive way, right? So, we’ve got to have some other shows, too. So, I’m super happy that the network, during the day, on daytime television, is showing affluent Black families. It’s fantastic.”
Recently, Bryant, who is currently single, also appeared on the summer reality-dating series, Bravo’s Love Hotel where single people are looking for their partners. She shared how that experience was for her as well. “It was odd, absolutely, but I was with my girlfriend Ashley Darby, and she is my ride or die, so it was fun doing it with her,” admitted Gizelle. “I just felt like there were no guys that were really there for me, but it was a great science experiment.”
Before she leaves her guest stint behind, Gizelle has an idea for the writers of Beyond the Gates, “I think coming back, my character, Gloria, should be Vernon Dupree’s (Clifton Davis) mistress! What?! That would be epic! I’m thinking that would be great TV, just sayin’.”

No! There will be no affair for Vernon! I was happy to see Gizelle, however, she was a tad over the top with the hair swinging, LOL! Other than that, let her be a villain match for Leslie….she can get with Ted and make Nicole jealous, heck, she looks like his type!

Daytime Drama Casting Directors Talk Four of the Most Challenging and Important Recasts of Their Careers
Daytime soap opera casting directors: Greg Salmon (The Young and the Restless) Marnie Saitta (Days of Our Lives), Christy Dooley (The Bold and the Beautiful) and Kim Coleman (Beyond the Gates) discussed the process of casting for a daytime drama series from contract players to under-fives along and their expectations for auditioning, plus behind the scenes casting tales at their recent panel from the SAG-AFTRA Foundation.
The entertainment industry event helps actors receive inside intel from leading casting professionals and took place just over a week ago at the Meryl Streep Center for the Performing Arts in Los Angeles.
Moderated by noted journalist Jim Halterman, one of the more intriguing moments of the panel discussion occurred when the subject turned to the challenges of a recast on a soap opera and replacing a popular actor with another in a very key role. Each of the four casting directors were able to put a spotlight on such an occurrence and all were leading men on their respective soaps.

For Marnie Saitta at Days of Our Lives, she was tasked with finding the new EJ DiMera. James Scott had become amazingly popular in the role from 2006-2014. Then, enter Dan Feuerriegel, who had the right stuff for DAYS to finally pull the trigger and cast the new EJ. The character returned on-screen in 2021 after 7 years.
RECASTING EJ DIMERA
“I do know now how to best approach a recast, like I’m casting a new character,” explains Marnie. “I feel like the actor just has to come in and make it their own. You can’t even try, looks-wise, to be quite honest. Obviously, EJ DiMera is kind of a focal point (of DAYS) and Dan was such a champ. I swear to God, I think I brought him in maybe six times. I would bring him in for other characters, but I kept thinking he’s really good for EJ and it didn’t go. Then, I brought him for something else, same thing. I knew that the role of EJ was going to be really difficult to find, and it finally clicked. He took EJ in a different direction. He has a totally different vibe, but equally as effective.”
RECASTING ADAM NEWMAN
For Greg Salmon, he discussed the pivotal role of Y&R’s Adam Newman, who was previously by Tracker star, Justin Hartley and what he looked for to be able to find the right actor to be the next black sheep of the Newman clan.
“We had Justin Hartley playing the role of Adam Newman before he went to This Is Us, and now Mark Grossman has been playing him,” explained Salmon. “So that was a really tough role to recast. Before Justin, there were two other people (Chris Engen and Michael Muhney) who played the part. Adam Newman is central to the show. This is Victor Newman’s (Eric Braeden) son. So, it’s an incredibly important character to the show. But now, Mark Grossman’s been playing the role for several years now. He’s completely made the role his own.”

Photo: JPI
Salmon added the key attributes that Mark Grossman or someone like him brings into an audition for the role of that is being recast, “I really think it just comes down to the person’s energy and what they’re bringing to the character,” explained Greg. “You can’t think, ‘Well, I know Justin Hartley looks like this. And the guy before him looked like that,’ because then you’ll just get trapped. You’re not trying to find another Justin Harley. You’re trying to find another Adam Newman. I just remember Mark came in and I think he read with Eric Braeden, and he read with a few other people of the Newman family, and his energy was just off the charts. You know, this is how Adam should feel. Eventually, I think the audience really accepted him.”
RECASTING RIDGE FORRESTER
In a little-known casting story, The Bold and the Beautiful’s Christy Dooley shared how Mark Grossman almost became one of the Forresters! “He tested for us (at The Bold and the Beautiful). Mark came in and read for the role of Thomas Forrester and he was my choice for the role,” says Dooley. “The role wound up going to Matthew Atkinson, but then he came down to read for The Young and the Restless.”
Dooley was also tasked with one of the biggest soap recasts in history when Ronn Moss exited The Bold and the Beautiful in his signature role of Ridge Forrester which Moss played from 1987-2012. Eventually, Thorsten Kaye took over the role at the end of 2013.

“When Ronn Moss left the show, Brad Bell (executive producer and head writer, B&B) said, ‘I can’t recast him right now, he’s just too familiar.’ So he waited. The character was always talked about because he is one of the Forresters. Brad finally said, ‘We need to bring him back. We got to find somebody.’ Then to get Thorsten Kaye, who’s so different than Ronn, and he made it completely his own. He’s just amazing at it, so I think time helped (between bringing on a new Ridge.)”
RECASTING DR. TED RICHARDSON
For Beyond the Gates, Kim Coleman, she has a soap opera that is now building a new legacy only in its second season. However, in season one, Maurice Johnson became the first recast in series history when he was replaced as Dr. Ted Richardson with Keith D. Robinson and at a critical point in the storyline.
Coleman explained, “I think it was a transition and everyone was in agreement that it was the right thing to do. And then fortunately, we brought in an actor that the audience knew. They knew his face. He was great. Keith made it his own and there was not a lot of controversy and it wasn’t complicated. Keith D. Robinson is on the show now and everyone loves him. So, it was a very smooth transition.”
You can check out the full conversation with daytime casting directors, Greg Salmon, Marnie Saitta, Christy Dooley and Kim Coleman below.
