Days Of Our Lives

The Shawn Christian and Nadia Bjorlin Interview – Days of our Lives

© JPI Studios

© JPI Studios

Oh what a tangled web we weave!  For months on Days of our Lives, the beguiling Chloe has been deceiving ‘hottie’ Dr. Daniel.  During a drunken stupor she falls into bed with her old-ex, Phillip Kiriakis, and later she becomes pregnant.  But, who is the real baby daddy?  And, how many of the Salem townsfolk know of her infidelity?  It seems like almost everyone except the good doctor.  Then finally, on yesterday’s episode with many clinks and thuds along the way, Chloe and Daniel finally tied the knot when they said their “I Do’s” in a ceremony filled with drama, thanks in part to Daniel’s daughter Melanie, who was set to blow the lid off the proceedings.   Now that the duo is legally together, how long can they have any sort of wedded bliss?

DAYS, Shawn Christian (Daniel) and Nadia Bjorlin (Chloe), chatted with On-Air On-Soaps for a fantastic and fun follow-up to our last conversation with daytime’s sexiest duo over a year ago.  We take a look at Danloe’s latest plight, take a look into the future to see if there is any hope for the couple, and discuss the complex set of circumstances surrounding the DNA paternity switch, which could truly change the course of their love once and for all…. or will it?

When talking with Shawn and Nadia, you get two beautiful people inside and out, whose irreverent charm and wit can have fans rolling on the floor in stitches, or gazing in to their eyes on the television screen escaping into their turbulent romance.  So for the Danloe nation who asked for a new feature with the sultry stars of Salem… you got it!

MICHAEL:

So, as we left it on-air, Chloe and Daniel got hitched, but not without a “hitch” or two. Then they quickly headed off for an exciting honeymoon!  But now, we won’t see you two on-air for a bit or the honeymoon.  Can you confirm this?

SHAWN:

The honeymoon was filmed for DVD only, and the release date is unknown. (Laughs)

© JPI Studios

MICHAEL:

Is there a hot steamy sex romp on it?

SHAWN:

I cannot tell you in the interview.  You should buy the DVD! (Laughs)

MICHAEL:

It should fly off the shelves!  Nadia, I have to say in your entire run on DAYS, I don’t think I have seen you with such panicked expressions on your face, scene after scene… for almost a year now!

NADIA:

I need to go to therapy in real life just to deal with this.

MICHAEL:

Dr. Daniel is becoming a dim-wit!  Can’t he figure something is going on behind his back?  I know the men are often objectified hunks on the show, but Dr. Daniel has brains and sex appeal to boot!

SHAWN:

Just know that what you think you are going to get, you never get.

NADIA:

It is kind of hysterical that everybody in Salem knows about this cheating incident except Daniel, at this point. (Laughs)

SHAWN:

© JPI Studios

It’s brutal! I am serious. I am walking down the street and people come up to me and go, “Oh, my God, Dr. Jonas!  Do you know that it’s not your baby?”

NADIA:

At least, you’re not the one being called “whore” on twitter! (Laughs)

MICHAEL:

Your Danloe fan base is rabid! They love the two of you very, very much and can’t enough of this pairing, even though Chloe has been naughty.

SHAWN:

They cannot be satisfied, and it’s a good thing.

NADIA:

You know what?  Chloe is not a naughty girl!  She just makes bad decisions. (Laughs) She is always the one that gets stuck paying the ultimate consequences for her actions. She does not think things through realistically.  With all due respect to these circumstances, she was extremely naïve and tricked by Vivian and that whole debacle.  She probably did not deal with her grief in the most appropriate way possible. (Laughs)  Chloe does crazy things.

SHAWN:

But thank God, she did not shoot me in the head!

NADIA:

Exactly!  Kate even tried killing Chloe!  Other people murder people in Salem and people forgave Kate like a week later.  So the fact that she had this lousy one night stand with an old boyfriend which, if you ask me, is called “grandfathering it in,” that should not even count! (Laughs)

SHAWN:

Wow!

MICHAEL:

I think Chloe looked so pregnant so quickly!

NADIA:

© JPI Studios

Not really. The problem was that the baby bump came on a little late.  I have a close personal friend who did not even look pregnant till she was maybe seven months and she was ridiculously skinny.  She never got fat.  I should have started wearing one a bit earlier, but that got lost a bit in the script.  I think it was kind of an honest mistake and then it was. “Oh, gosh, we better make her look pregnant.”  The timeline actually makes sense from February to November.  The stomach I am wearing is a real prosthetic stomach, and I have had three of them.  They were molds of real womens stomachs. Everyone shows differently. This last one I am wearing is actually not the biggest one; there is a bigger one later.  It just looks really big!  My boobs are not as big as Shawn would like them to be.  It looks a bit funny, probably because my arms should look a bit fatter.

MICHAEL:

I have interviewed a lot of women recently on daytime who have had to play pregnant and got to wear a baby bump.  They told me they enjoyed their time on-screen with it, because that meant they didn’t have to watch their diet as much. Thus, they could eat what they wanted.

NADIA:

I found that myself.  I was like “Ooh yeah”.   I was sympathy pregnant.

SHAWN:

I even bought ice cream for her!

MICHAEL:

Carly had become to some, a true “buttinski” and thorn, in the relationship between Daniel and Chloe.  But I guess she realized how her lie affected Daniel about not telling him she gave birth to his biological daughter, Melanie.  So, is that what is fueling Carly wanting to do the right thing for him, and yet not hurt him in the process?

SHAWN:

Carly’s dilemma is pretty huge, considering she betrayed and lied to Daniel for almost 20 years, and it’s like, now you are going to go back and keep another secret from me?

NADIA:

How old is your kid supposed to be anyway?

© JPI Studios

SHAWN:

Well, we never defined it! Can Melanie drink?

NADIA:

I think all of a sudden Melanie can drink, but she was supposed to be seventeen a year ago!  Melanie has the energy of a teenager, but now she is the child bride of Phillip so… (Laughs)

MICHAEL:

Nadia, where do you really see Chloe’s relationship with Carly at this point…as friend or ultimate foe?

NADIA:

It’s nicer that at least Carly and Chloe are friends now and not that, “I hate you” stuff.  I was feeling slightly juvenile for awhile just spewing venom on her.  It is nice that we formed this friendship.

SHAWN:

From an outsider’s perspective, I think the two of them have now created something on-screen where it’s more than just adversaries.  Crystal Chappell (Carly) and Nadia have now created something a little beyond that.  They gave it this interesting twist and threw everyone for a loop.  I think it kind of worked out great, actually.

NADIA:

It happened organically in a sense.  I think eventually, Carly saw that Chloe’s intentions were that Chloe meant well. Chloe also realizes that she is the most honest with Carly. She tells Carly almost everything and she does not have that friendship with anybody else.  She does not have that with Nicole or Daniel (who should be her best friend), but it kind of just happened which is kind of interesting.  She found herself confiding in her, and also realizing as much as she hates it, Carly does come from a good place as well, as she does not want to be involved in this whole other deception that could impact Daniel’s life greatly.

MICHAEL:

Seems to me, that Chloe befriends all the women who have hurt her!  Look at Nicole, who at one time put flesh eating bacteria on her face! (Laughs)

NADIA:

© JPI Studios

At least Carly was horrible within reason, but Nicole I don’t understand.  It sort of adds to the fact that Chloe in her last few years, was being written like such a push-over and naïve.  I am trying to see that she tries to see the best in all people and everyone makes mistakes.

MICHAEL:

Like forgiving for attempting to permanently disfigure her face?

NADIA:

Exactly.

SHAWN:

Let bygones, be bygones!

NADIA:

I think it’s really Chloe and her faith and this whole religious element.  She has this new found Catholicism. (Laughs)

SHAWN:

Ah, Father Matt!  I think it is interesting that Daniel makes bad choices as well, but in his heart of hearts he is truly trying to do good, but he gets snagged by some bad decisions, and people know that.  And those are the people you go to bat for you or root for you, and I think even so as a couple.  You see these two people have weathered unbelievable storms and they are really trying to the right thing.  What you get is a couple looking into each other’s eyes saying, “You are my soul mate.” Then off in the distance is this huge storm that is heading their way.  They are oblivious to it, but the rest of the world is going, “Oh, my God, please save them!” People surround them and try to help them through.

MICHAEL:

In your own words, set up the wedding episode for those who missed yesterday’s nuptials!

NADIA:

Don’t ask Shawn, he doesn’t remember. (Laughs) Melanie pulls Chloe away, and she says, “I need to speak to you Chloe.  We can do it here in public or in private” So we go off in private and it is one of those red herrings.  What it turns out to be is Melanie is asking Chloe if she really did say those things about her not being a “real” part of the family, because she was not raised by Daniel or Carly.

MICHAEL:

© JPI Studios

At one point, viewers thought Melanie came to Daniel to try to tell him the truth about his wife’s infidelity.

SHAWN:

I think Daniel knows more than he lets on, and he does not want to hear the big truth.  He doesn’t want to hear what he probably knows, and look, this is Shawn’s thoughts on it.  But also, there are people and circumstances in life, and if you look back at some of the scenes where right before someone is going to tell him, be it, Carly, Melanie, etc., he says, “Stop talking.  Listen to me.” And you can see him almost pull back and think he can handle it.  I think in many respects, he does not think he can handle what he may know to be true.

NADIA:

That is good.  I don’t know if Daniel is that deep!  No, just kidding. (Laughs)

SHAWN:

Look, clearly there are so many episodes and encounters he has had, where he goes, “Oh, my God. What is up?”

NADIA:

Daniel is like a genius brain surgeon! You would think he would be so smart or realize something about her is off. (Laughs)

SHAWN:

That is what I think he loves about her, that she is a bit off! (Laughs)

MICHAEL:

Speaking of off, can you tell the viewers a funny moment that happened during the taping of the wedding ceremony?  I know with you two something had to have gone down.

SHAWN:

© JPI Studios

It was the heels Nadia was wearing under her dress.

NADIA:

Oh, yes.  I was wearing “Glenda the Good Witch,” who is Glen Allen who does my make-up on the show. He is a drag queen by night, and a fantastic one at that.  He does fantastic impersonations and one of them is Lady Gaga.  He had these fantastic crazy blingy hooker Lady Gaga stripper shoes, like with a seven inch heel. They were ridiculous. I was kind of impressed I could walk in them.  I don’t know what that says about me. (Laughs) I decided to put them on and strut around in my wedding dress with the baby bump.

SHAWN:

And she wore them to the honeymoon, and that is why it is available on DVD!

NADIA:

I did have to take them off during actual taping so I did not look like a giant, but I liked wearing them in rehearsals.  It gave me a secret thrill. (Laughs)  The second thing was, I was not that good at reciting the vows for some reason.  I had a hard time remembering them and everyone was laughing at me.  I guess by that point, I was fried.  I was messing them up.  This is only my third on-screen marriage, you can’t expect me to have them memorized! (Laughs)

MICHAEL:

Fans were wondering if Melanie would finally rain on Chloe and Daniel’s parade. But alas, Danloe love got a stay of execution.

NADIA:

Yes! When Melanie pulls Chloe aside at the wedding and says, “Did you really say that about me?”  She makes a point about this, because this is the reason she decided not to blow Chloe’s cover.  Right before Melanie goes to interrupt the wedding, she runs into Brady and they have this short conversation, and without knowing what she is going through, he says to her, “Sometimes, you got to lie for love.”  He basically said, “Honesty is not the best policy, because you may needlessly hurt people, and you live for love sometimes.”  At that moment, she listened to it and made a reference to that.

MICHAEL:

But after Melanie let her off the hook for now, did Chloe finally feel some relief; enough to knock that constant fearful look off her face?

NADIA:

She finally does have a relieved look on her face. We do leave Salem fairly quickly and we don’t have a reception…..cutting costs. (Laughs)  No! (Laughs) We have to leave and pack and go to our honeymoon.

MICHAEL:

© JPI Studios

So are you telling me that what Shawn has indicated in theory is true?  We would have to buy a DVD of the honeymoon because we don’t see Danloe again for awhile?

NADIA:

We disappear.  We are not on DAYS for awhile.  It was this emotional climax with this high point; well actually, it’s a high point with no climax. (Laughs)   Also, I don’t know who would want to see a really big pregnant lady doing it.

SHAWN:

Some things are left better to the imagination, and the fans can wonder what they are doing on their honeymoon.

MICHAEL:

Are the two of you as confused by the DNA switching results story, as some viewers are?  It has taken so many twists and turns.  It’s hard to follow the bouncing baby ball!

SHAWN:

I agree, but they did a nice job of that “whodunit” kind of story.  I think they set it up very nicely.

NADIA:

It was supposed to be confusing for us the actors, but we now know.  But we did not know and had no idea who did it for a long time.  So everybody was playing it out like they possibly did implement the DNA switch.

SHAWN:

Presumably, anyone could have had a hand in it, or could have, at this point.

MICHAEL:

But does Chloe know the results are switched?

NADIA:

I am going to say, no, she doesn’t know.  Chloe fully believes this child is Daniel’s and it could be!

SHAWN:

I don’t think so either.  They both believe this is their kid.

© JPI Studios

MICHAEL:

Chloe’s big phobia is that her one night of passion with Phillip will come out, more than this could be his biological child that she is passing off as Daniel’s, correct?

NADIA:

She got the relief of a lifetime when she found out the baby was Daniel’s.  So she thought, “Now I am going to have my wedding.  Nothing can go wrong.”  Right now, she is freaking out that Nathan or Melanie will open their big mouths and spill the beans.  Chloe is worried that she will be left with this child she is carrying on her own, when this guy means everything in the world to her.  She would not want to lose it due to this stupid screw up.  All her fears and anxiety are motivated from the fact that she had a one-night stand with somebody.  Obviously, she is paranoid that if people find out they are going to start digging and trying to find out who it was.  I believe I made a reference to that.  If Daniel finds out I cheated on him, it’s not going to take him very long to figure out who it is.  I’m assuming he would ask Chloe, and there is only so much she can deny.  He is going to know it was not some stranger.

MICHAEL:

So it will it come as a complete shock to the fans when it is revealed who did the DNA switch?

NADIA:

Yes, I feel it will surprise fans.

SHAWN:

It is a surprise.

NADIA:

Shock and Awe!  And it is terribly exciting… so stay tuned! (Laughs)

MICHAEL:

Would you say there is hope for Danloe, after everything may get blown to smithereens? I know there are some big moments to come during November sweeps!

NADIA:

Oh, absolutely. There is light at the end of the tunnel. How fitting I say that in lieu of this week’s events in Chile.

MICHAEL:

© JPI Studios

Yes, and speaking of the Chilean mine rescue… how amazing!  It was human emotion and drama at its most heightened level.  I did not realize that the mines were so deep.  They explained it on CNN as the depth of two Empire State Building and seven football fields.

SHAWN:

I went down into one of those types of mines.  It is so amazing. You can hear your heartbeat.  I went down into a mine when we did a film in Romania.  We went down this huge elevator shaft, and this guy who has probably been there since the 1920’s runs the lever and everything shakes!  You are there with this little cable and you think, “Oh, my God. Where am I going?”

NADIA:

This was like a tunnel of dirt, and that is what is so amazing. It could have collapsed in on the miners.  It was unbelievable to see.

MICHAEL:

So now that we have come out of the ashes, do you think there is long-term hope for Danloe, Shawn?

SHAWN:

Yes, I do.  I think what is interesting about this dynamic is that the years they have been together, it has never been pure bliss.  There has always been something off into the horizon that has been ready to steer them off course. There is always something worth fighting for with these two.

NADIA:

They had one happy night at one point! (Laughs)

MICHAEL:

Nadia, you now have worked a few years with Shawn. The three of us did an interview together over a year ago…

SHAWN:

We were laughing about that today!

MICHAEL:

© JPI Studios

It was a fun read!  But now Nadia, after having spent more time with Shawn, what would you say about this guy?

NADIA:

Put in a big old, “Uch”! (Laughs) No, I feel the same way as when we first started working together. We have an incredibly good time.  Shawn is passionate about the work and shockingly so sometime.  In all seriousness, it’s nice to work with somebody who puts a lot of thought and effort into the story being told, and exploring all the different options of it, instead of just looking at it as words on a page.  Shawn always takes his time with it, and gets you thinking.  He is always challenging me and he is a pleasure to work with.

MICHAEL:

But Nadia, what the fans really want to know is… how is it to work with a sexy co-star?

NADIA:

It’s not a tough day at the office, I will tell you that.

SHAWN:

You are getting Christian Louboutin shoes now.  I am putting these other ones back. (Laughs)

MICHAEL:

Shawn, what would you say about Nadia?

SHAWN:

I will tell you what; since we first started it was amazing and it continues to get better.  This woman rises to every challenge that is put in front of her.  And we do talk about these scenes.  We work on them. T here isn’t anything she does not back down from.  Nadia takes it as a personal challenge and will rise to the occasion.  And what is beautiful is; when I do a scene with her there is stuff that happens with her, where you are like, “I did not see that coming.”  She brings it and it’s a beautiful quality. There is something she brings out in my acting that I did not know existed, and she opened some doors for me in that way to experience.

NADIA:

That is a wonderful compliment.

MICHAEL:

When the two of you are out at fan events, the mall, a Danloe mixer, (Laughs) what do the fans say to you the most?

SHAWN:

“Will you guys ever get it right?”  That is said a lot.  They are rooting for me. But they will say, if Daniel or Chloe made a mistake in the relationship, “How could you!”  They are as equally as passionate and insatiable, for a lack of a better word about these two. They don’t hold back on their comments, good or bad.

NADIA:

They want us to have a happy ending.  They want Danloe to get married and have lots of love babies, and they want to watch the process of that.  (Laughs)

MICHAEL:

© JPI Studios

So this set-up that could destroy everything: Melanie, Daniel’s daughter, is married to Phillip.  Chloe slept with her former beau, Phillip.  So Shawn, what do you envision Daniel will do to Phillip once he finds out about the betrayal?

SHAWN:

I don’t know, but I have thought about it.  What would be the consequences of discovering something like this?  There are so many layers to it.  I have not read it in the scripts yet, but clearly Phillip is my daughter’s husband.  Phillip then slept with my wife who was not my wife at that time, and then anytime there is a new child involved, it is thicker than a seven-layer cake.

MICHAEL:

This is actually pretty brilliant that the writers set this house of cards up like this.

SHAWN:

It is going to depend on how they choose to reveal it and how it unfolds.  And it depends what layer you unearth first, and that would then depend on Daniel’s reaction.

MICHAEL:

Where do you think Chloe is leaving her relationship with Melanie, as she heads off for her honeymoon…in a strained place?

NADIA:

I think Chloe is still walking on egg shells. There is sort of a truce that has been called, that we have decided to settle this for the time being.  However, Chloe cannot rely on that Melanie says she is going to let it go.  She has no idea if she will change her mind. I don’t think she is going to feel really secure around Melanie or anybody for awhile. She is working so hard right now to gain everyone’s trust back from the all the people that found out about this.  Chloe does not feel good about herself, certainly.  Now she is working on trying to make everything OK.  I think she really does want this picture perfect family.  She does want to be friends with Melanie.  It is going to be hard at this point obviously, because Melanie has been lied to. Chloe is on pins and needles about it.

SHAWN:

Now the tennis ball is in Daniel’s court, because he had heard that Melanie thinks Chloe said that she is not really “Daniel’s daughter” as much as her new child can be.   I think that is how they almost pick it up after the honeymoon.

NADIA:

Now, it’s like Chloe trying to do damage control for something that was not said, and it is better than the ultimate truth coming out.  Chloe has to sort of clean up this mess that Nicole created.  So Chloe thinks that her and Daniel’s relationship isn’t as strong as it should be at this point.  Chloe supposedly said something stupid about Melanie.  And it probably sounds like it came out of left field, which is what Daniel is wondering and what would motivate Chloe to say something like that.

MICHAEL:

Nadia, you have a couple primetime guest spots coming up! This Monday, October 19th, you appear on a new episode of the CBS drama, NCIS. What are you playing?

© JPI Studios

NADIA:

It’s a small thing, and it was really fun.  I am one of the neighbors being asked questions and being interrogated about this incident that happened.  I can’t even talk about the storyline there, and I can’t ruin any plot, but all I know is they were like, “Hey, would you put this bikini on?” And I was like, “What?”   I had to take off the baby bump and go put on a bikini and flirt with Michael Weatherly for a little bit.  It wasn’t bad!

SHAWN:

They put you in a bikini to throw the clues off!

NADIA:

I basically play a rich bored trophy wife to some old dude (Laughs) And, I am taping a guest-starring role on the CBS comedy, Two and Half Men this week.  I am playing a trophy girl to
an old dude on there, too! (Laughs)

Thank you so much for the interview, we really appreciate your kindness and generosity. Perhaps some of our fanbase will come back if it ever looks like Days is invested in Danloe. I don’t know, when even someone like me who’s been onboard since Dec 2008 has had enough of this depressing, disappointing program and isnt’ going to watch the wedding we’ve waited 2 years for, I’m not holding my breath. The wedding week was about Melanie, not Danloe; Daniel has become an unappealing character for me and many Danloe fans ever since he became this devoted daddy to the… Read more »

Thanks for this awesome DANLOE interview:) Love them. This couple is the only reason I watched DAYS. SC and NB have that Amazing supercouple chemistry, I wish the writers would give them a storyline that’s about them without all the interlopers. Any other soap on Daytime would be lucky to have this beautiful, chemistry-filled couple on their show. Hopefully Days writers get it together and Fast! If there’s no Daniel/Chloe there’s no reason to watch anymore.
Danloe FTW!

Michael, thank you VERY much for this wonderful interview. It was very indepth and gave me hope after a week (when I should have been happy), that started with Daniel comparing Chloe to Rebecca and inferring that she fell short, and ended with Daniel and Chloe on their honeymoon and Daniel sulking about Melanie. What have these writers done to the most compelling, passionate couple on daytime? I’m barely hanging on but Daniel and Chloe ARE worth fighting for. The meat of this story needs to be about Daniel/Chloe/Philip. I have never seen a WTD where the focus wasn’t on… Read more »

They were both very funny. It’s interesting that both actors take their characters side or point of view no matter what crazy things the writers make them do. Even the actors point out things their characters do that I have seen people post about.

I guess every Days couple has fans that love them.

I was not a fan of the Daniel and Chloe pairing in the beginning. It was only after it was revealed that Daniel was Melanie’s father, that I became interested. Now I am so wrapped up in this wonderfully tangled mess of Melanie/Philip/Daniel/Chloe/Carly. There have been some amazing performances throughout. And I now believe that the love Daniel and Chloe share is true and sustainable. I would love it if you did an interview with the other couple in this mess…Philip and Melanie. They have been knocking it out of the box with their performances, and it would be so… Read more »

Great, funny interview! I I love this couple to death! But I honestly can’t stand this storyline. I’ve waited a long time for them to get married and their wedding wasn’t even about them. It revolved all around melanie. I was very disappointed in how it all played out. This day should’ve been about them. I’ haven’t been watching that often because I can’t stand her or carly in this storyline. The philip/chloe one night stand also turned me off to this whole storyline. Michael, Thank you so much for the indepth Danloe interview. Daniel and Chloe are the reason I started watching Days again-the only reason. I haven’t watched an entire episode of Days only an occasional Danloe scene on the internet since the writers made Danloe plot points in the CarlMel trainwreck. In fact, I had every intention of leaving Days for good after viewing Danloe say their vows and seal their union as husband and wife with a kiss. Michael thank you for another wonderful interview with two of my favorite actors! As usual, Shawn & Nadia’s charmed their fans and even attempted to put a positive spin on what the writers are giving them. I am sad I no longer watch them on Days because of one of the most unappealing storylines I can imagine, the fun and romance has left the building . Dearest Michael, You have proven once again that you are not only the sexiest soap journalist, but also the most generous with the soap fans. Thank You !!! Michael Fairman for taking the time to interview my favorite couple on Days. Danloe played by Shawn & Nadia have kept me interested in watching Days for the past two years. That’s my favorite DAYS couple! Shawn Christian and Nadia Bjorlin are so funny! Thanks for the interview Michael. Like so many others, Daniel and Chloe were my reason for watching DAYS. I love their chemistry. This storyline is horrible (i.e Carly and Melanie, the one night stand between philip/chloe and now a who’s the daddy storyline) Refuse to watch any of it, but this interview gives me hope that Danloe will end up together. This couple has that magical old school chemistry that you see in supercouples. I’ll come back if the writers ever write this beautiful couple a storyline of their… Read more »

I love Daniel and Chloe and have since day one, when they were so controversial. The message boards were filled with pros and cons for this sensual/passionate couple, it was like nothing we’ve ever seen on daytime. Nadia and Shawn took the challenge and ran with it, and I thought this was a supercouple in the making. I’ve been watching off and on and I keep wishing the writers change course from this hideous Carly/Melanie story and give Danloe their own story and their own family, certainly this Darly/CarMel family is not authentic and I know of no one who… Read more »

Phloe sucks.Danloe all the way.Chloe loves Daniel and only him.Philip is all about Melanie, doesn;’t want that child and is such a jerk he lets Chloe take all the heat alone. What a ‘man”..not.Beside he doesn’t desirve a child much less one with a woman like Chloe..He makes me sick. And if Daniel fails Chloe he can go to hell. He’s pretty good at making promises but sucks at keeping them.If he doesn’t come through for her,I hope Chloe kicks him to the curb. She desirves and can do better.I want Daniel to prove he would actually “slay dragons for her”,”love her no matter what… Read more »

Days Of Our Lives

Who is DAYS Gwen Really? What is Her Vendetta Against Abigail All About?

We have a new psycho in Salem, and she is played to perfection by Emily O’Brien who has been bringing her brand of quirky evil to the NBC soap opera as Gwen.  Soap fans, of course, remember her as Jana Hawkes on The Young and the Restless from 2006-2011.

Ron Carlivati and his DAYS writing team certainly have some tricks up their sleeve where Gwen is concerned as viewers recently found out she was behind slipping Abigail (Marci Miller) the drug months ago causing her hallucinations.

Photo: JPI

But Gwen is even much darker than we think, when several key clues and moments were revealed on Friday’s episode of DAYS when she went to visit her conspirator in prison, Dr. Rolf (William Utay).

During the exchange, we learn Gwen has been getting the mind-altering drug from one of Dr. Rolf’s concoctions.  She reveals to him that their plan has hit the proverbial snag.  The drug did not dismantle Abigail as she had hoped.  We also learn while she was in the mental institution – Bayview – that is how she tracked Rolf down by researching the drug he had created.

And it appears, Rolf hates Abigail too, citing he always saw her as  thorn in Stefano’s side.  It is then Gwen says he wants another dose of the drug to “melt Abby’s brain!”  Rolf says without anyone else to take the fall for it, he can’t come up with it.

He suggests to her to alter her plan and to instead destroy Abigail’s life piece by piece … and go for the long game instead of the short term – take everything that is near and dear from her including her husband, children, home, everything.

But, what does come to light is that even Dr. Rolf does not know why Gwen wants to destroy Abigail.  That is when Gwen shares she has very good reason to hate Abigail, and he, along with everyone else, will find out why when the time is right.

So, what are your theories?  Who is Gwen?  Is she a character with plastic surgery?  Could she be a sister no one knew Abigail had?  A former mental patient who Abby knew when she was getting help a few years back? And what is her gripe with Abigail all about?  Comment below!

Kassie DePaiva, Nathan Purdee & Taylor Purdee Talk ‘Killian & The Comeback Kids’, One Life to Live & Eve’s Reign of Terror on DAYS

It’s ‘all in the family’ + a dear friend that makes the film Killian and the Comeback Kids something that soap fans will want to see. In it, daytime veterans, Kassie DePaiva (Ex-GL, OLTL, GH and Days) and Nathan Purdee (Ex-Y&R and OLTL) are featured in the new movie directed, written and starring Nathan’s talented son, Taylor.

One Life to Live fans will get a kick out of that Kassie and Nathan play a married couple in the film.  In story, a millennial (Taylor A. Purdee) comes home to live with his parents in a depressed rural town after getting a college degree in the big city. The film illustrates the issues facing many of America’s youth today, which could not be more apropos for the times we are living with many children moving back in with their parents. However, the movie shares an uplifting message filled with original music from Taylor’s folk-rock band, The Cumberland Kids.

Michael Fairman TV chatted with Kassie, Nathan and Taylor to get the inside scoop on: collaborating together on this project, revisiting Llanview with some memories and thoughts on the cancellation of the beloved soap, plus Kassie’s last turn on Days of our Lives as an unhinged Eve Donovan – a performance that just may garner attention come Daytime Emmy time next year.

This conversation was filled with candor, humor, and a parent’s love for their child. Killian and the Comeback Kid is playing in selected theatres and dates including tonight Friday, September 25th in Atlanta, and October 2nd in Chicago. For more movie info go to the film’s website here And now here’s what Kassie, Nathan and Taylor shared.

Photo: KarmicReleaseLTD

I was really intrigued by the film. Taylor, how did you lure your dad to be in the movie?

TAYLOR:  Oh my gosh, it was the craziest negation ever.

I bet! (Laughs)

TAYLOR:  When I was a kid, Roberta, my mom, made me promise to always write him roles.  So, it was kind of obligatory.

KASSIE:  That is so funny!

TAYLOR:  It’s true.

Had you met Kassie before, or was this the first time?

TAYLOR:  I knew Kassie from when my dad and her were doing One Life to Live together.   Five years before I was filming this movie, Nathan texted me, “Hey!  Kassie and Jim (DePaiva) are right by your dorm room.  You should go see them!”  So, catching up as an adult was so nice.  I had a non-parentally controlled grown-up hang-out with her.

Photo: KarmicReleaseLTD

What was the journey this film, Killian and the Comeback Kids, went on as far as from the writing of it, to production, to its completion?

TAYLOR:  Well, the front half was surprisingly quick.  I think writing it through to having it finished was about 18 months, and there were about 6 months of, “how’s it going to come out,” and then, we thought we knew what was going to happen, and we were all getting ready for it to hit in movie theatres in the spring when the world ended, and that’s how we got here three years later.

Nathan, tell me about the role you play; because Kassie and you are husband and wife in the film.

NATHAN: Well, yeah, you kind of covered it! (Laughs)  I play her husband, and she plays my wife, and I appreciated the casting situation.  It’s interesting how Taylor chose Kassie because he did say that he wanted someone who was close to his mom’s personality.  I couldn’t think of anybody else other than Kassie because the only difference is Kassie is taller, but they both are such loving, caring people.  They always want to mother you and make sure you’re fed, and you’re safe, and you’re happy, and neither one of them knows the word, “no,” when it comes to the people who they’re taking care of.  I love Kassie anyway, so good for me.

KASSIE:  Yeah, they cut our love scene, and I don’t know what that’s about. (Laughs)

Kassie, what do you remember from when you first met Nathan?  You were at One Life, right?

KASSIE:  No, when I first met Nathan, we were in San Antonio, and we were doing an appearance.  I met Bobbie Eakes (Ex-Krystal, AMC and Macy, B&B) for the first time then too, but I was on The Guiding Light, and I was singing, and Nathan was there.  Nathan and I sat beside each other.  I honestly felt like I had known Nathan my entire life.  We were drinking margaritas and talking, talking, talking, talking, talking, talking.

NATHAN:  Yep!

Photo: JPI

KASSIE:  Nathan and my husband, Jim are very good friends.  I have to say, Nathan was so lovely when I was going through my cancer journey.  He came to see me every week, sometimes twice a week when I was in the hospital, and he would come up, and he would hang out with Jim.  I will never, ever forget how lovely he was (it makes me tear up right now) to be there with support for my husband and myself as we went through that.  So, when Nathan asked me to be his wife in the film, I thought, “Well, hey, you practically live with me now, so that sounds good.”

So, Taylor, how did they do on-screen as husband and wife?

TAYLOR:  They’re fantastic.  We’ve only had one test screening, but one of the most consistent things audiences tell me is that they’re not just great together, but they each have such a quiet, brooding depth to them that you can’t help but imagine the back-story that they’re not talking about

KASSIE:  That’ll be the sequel!

TAYLOR:  Killian and the Comeback Kids 2: They Comeback Kids Comeback.

KASSIE:  They’ll come back again!

NATHAN:  Thanks for planting that seed in his head, Kassie.

Photo: KarmicReleaseLTD

TAYLOR:  It was important for me to try to synthesize a mixed-race couple.  So, it was really great to be able to have them, not just be so great together, but there was also the issue of we had to have a little girl who looked like she could not just be my sister, but also both of their daughter.  Creating a family from scratch was great because Nathan and Kassie already had the rapport.

Did you watch them on One Life to Live together?

TAYLOR:  Yeah!  I was in school most of the time, but I would go to set, and over the last 10 years, friends would send me YouTube clips from the show because for some reason none of the soaps are streaming.  There’s not like a soap Netflix!  It kind of needs to happen!  Soaps, they’re epic; there are decades worth of episodes and shows.

Photo: KarmicReleaseLTD

In this film, music is the backdrop.  It’s your music and your band that is featured?

TAYLOR:  Yeah, my best friend growing up and I were staring to write folk music around the time when I was deciding what script I wanted to make into a film.  We wrote the soundtrack, all the music that people sing, and the underscore, which was surprisingly the most fun part of it all.

Kassie what did you think of Taylor’s music?

ASSIE:  I think it’s wonderful.   I love music. It’s totally in the heart of me, and I just think that this movie is so timely. Kids these days are having to deal with not knowing what their future is going to be.  In the film, my son comes home, and he is trying to find himself, and he throws himself into his art and his music.  I just think there are a lot of people right now who are going through that.  I think it is extremely relatable, even more so than when you wrote it, Taylor.  I think people are looking for some type of connection, and I think this little movie is a good start.  It’s about people pulling together, and it’s got a strong rooting factor, and you want people to succeed, and it is great.  It takes you on a really nice journey.

You have some dates coming up where the film will play in a movie theatre- one is on September 25th in Atlanta and then another one on October 2nd in Chicago.  Taylor, how do you feel about making appearances for the film during the pandemic? You’re going with masks on?

TAYLOR:  Oh yeah.  We will be in a bubble; we are just getting into a car and sticking together.  I and John Donchak, who plays opposite me through the whole film, are going to all of those dates, and my co-songwriter, who also appears in the film, will be in Atlanta, if not at both premieres.

NATHAN:  And let me add, please, they’re going against my wishes as a parent, but he is 28- years-old, so all I can say is that we are hoping for the best because we want him to be safe.  He is very determined and passionate about it, so he’s got our support.

Photo: KarmicReleseLTD

Taylor, in your story, why does Killian come home and live with his parents?

TAYLOR: His plan at the time is that he has just graduated from a pricey university, and he is supposed to go off with his bandmate on a modest music tour.  He comes home to get his stuff and see his parents after graduating, but his bandmate drops out, and so the plan falls apart, and that’s how he gets stuck in this town and everything is just kind of falling apart. The plan that he had for his life after college gets pulled out right out from under him.

Nathan, when Kassie and you were on One Life for years, you weren’t there when it ended, as you had already left the show.  How did you feel upon learning it had been canceled by ABC?

NATHAN:  I was so disconnected by that time.  I just knew it was ending, and it wasn’t the first soap to go.  I saw it happening when the other shows started being canceled due to, I could be wrong about this, but I put the blame on reality TV.  By that point I had moved on in my personal and private life.  I was doing a lot of theatre then, traveling back and forth from North Carolina, really trying to keep busy, and fighting off the depression of not working full-time.  I missed Jim and Kassie the most, but I was thrilled that I could bump into them at any time and visit with them.  I kept in touch with Hillary B. Smith (Ex-Nora) and Bob Woods (Ex-Bo) and also, Timothy Stickney (Ex-RJ); in fact, Timothy Stickney’s wife did Taylor’s hair for the film.

Photo: JPI

Kassie, how do you feel years later about the cancellation of One Life to Live?

KASSIE:  I still miss it.  I loved it. The hard part about this show in particular being canceled is –one – that there wasn’t closure on it.  It kind of happened randomly, and there was still a lot more story to tell.  They kept it going on General Hospital, where they’ll bring some characters there.  So, it’s still in peoples’ minds. The second part is the friendships and the family connections that you’ve made over the many years that you’re there. Nothing lasts forever, that’s for sure, but as you were saying, there’s no streaming of these shows, but if you catch an episode on YouTube, One Life to Live, truly stands alone.  It just has great stories, great characters, and there is connection there that is very real.

Kassie, your last go-around at DAYS was just epic.  Did you guys see it?

TAYLOR:  I did see pieces of some of it.  I caught some of the “super villain”!

Photo: JPI

Eve went in guns blazing, evil as all get out, but so heartbreaking at the same time while she was torturing Ben (Rob Scott Wilson).  What did you think about all of that, Kassie?

KASSIE:  I was really hesitant to watch it because I remembered how “super villain” I was.  I remember getting on the plane, and Jimmy said, “How was it?” and I said, “I’ll probably never work again a day in my life. I’m like this (evil laughs) muah-ha-ha, muah-ha-ha kind of character.”  I mean, you hated what Eve was doing, and you were supposed to, but I think that they did a great job with production values, and it was reasonable what she was doing because she was going off the edge. It’s great to be able to sink your teeth into something that is so out-there and completely different from your own life.  I mean, it was exhausting.  Every day, I would come home and just be like, “Oh my God, give me a cocktail.” Eve had justification for her revenge, even as wrong as it was, and she needed to be heard, and she needed closure, and she made a bunch of wrong moves, and did a bunch of bad, bad, bad things, and now, she is probably in a mental institution somewhere, so…

You and I were on set of DAYS and I was going to interview you.  If I recall, at that point, you did not even know what the story arc was.

KASSIE:  No, I didn’t. When I arrived and looked at the script, I’m like, “Well, who blew up that wedding?”  Then, all of the sudden, “Oh, no!  I blew up the wedding.  This is bad!  I probably am not going to be coming back on this show again.”  I look at story and go, “Uh-oh.  There’s a shut door.”  I like open doors and open windows.

Photo: JPI

Taylor, what is your project? Are you continuing to write?  What do you see in the future for yourself?

TAYLOR:  This is my life for me.  The next thing that I think we are releasing is actually something that I made before this because everything is backwards, which is a documentary (very different) about Central American politics, which I’m hoping is out next year.  In terms of new scripts, everybody is a bit torn.  I kind of want to do a biopic of Lee Grant, or I want to do a blues/punk version of something inspired by The Shining.

Well, those are very polar opposite!

TAYLOR:  Yeah, aren’t they?

NATHAN:  Now you see what I’m living with. (Laughs)

Photo: IMDB

Nathan, you must be proud of Taylor, and it must be very cool to see your son have these multi-faceted talents.

NATHAN:  Of course, I’m proud of him and it’s great, but it’s strange because watching Taylor develop into the person he has developed into and continues to, made me realize that I hadn’t had the type of courage he has.  I had my dreams and certain things that I was very courageous about in my life.  I certainly don’t see him doing some things the way I did them, because he has more common sense than I do when it comes to life choices. His courage just blows my mind.  Most of my closest friends are professional musicians, and many of them, if I were to namedrop, you would know who they are, and they’ve had successful careers, and I’ve always looked up to them and admired them, but I was never that guy.  I just wanted to be a musician because I knew them and we were friends, but I didn’t have the discipline to do what they did, and I certainly didn’t have the God-given talent.  I play a little bit of keyboard and a little bit of saxophone myself, but I have to play one song 757 times before I even start to feel comfortable with it, and Taylor can sit down and start strumming on his guitar, and the next thing you know, he’s written a whole song.  It just blows my mind how creative and talented he is.  He has been surrounded by creative and talented people all of his life. He has absorbed a lot from the different people and the different opportunities he’s had, and I look at him sometimes, and I even say it to my wife, “Who is this kid?”  I like to share this story.  We went to see Taylor do Hamlet.  I’m guessing he was 15 or 16-years-old at the time. I’m watching him doing Hamlet, and I’m sitting in the chair, and I’m crying because I’m thinking to myself, “Oh, my God, he is so good!”  I told Taylor, “I would not tackle Hamlet on a football field, yet alone on stage.”  It made me realize that we had a force to be reckoned with.  He’s pretty amazing.  The bad news for him is that I always tell him the truth, and I lied to him once, and he called me out on it, and I promised that I would never lie to him again.  So, be careful what you ask me because I will tell you the truth from this point on.

Photo: KarmicReleaseLTD

KASSIE:  Taylor was also the director of this film, which I mean, “What the hell!”  This guy is doing everything.  He was deciding on the shots, he was deciding on the lighting, he was deciding this and that, he was editing the script, I’m like, “Holy cannoli!”  He’s like, “No, I want her to wear that shirt; I want her to do this.”  You would do the scene, and he’d come over and talk to you a little bit.  I mean, he was just awesome; Taylor brought so much insight to my character because I’m like, “What’s my relationship, and who are all of these kids?  Are we a loving family?”  We did it very quickly, too.  Taylor, look at what you’ve accomplished, and it is such a beautiful piece of art!

TAYLOR:  From a more functional standpoint as a director, one of the really great things about having the two of them was that Kassie came in half-way through filming, and we’d been working with the young actor/musicians a lot.  Some of them, it was their first big job, but pretty much all of them had worked before.  On Kassie’s first day, they didn’t know what they were in for.  She just rolled onto set, and all of the sudden, the stakes and bar of how to be an actor just changed.  From that point on, when Kassie and Nathan started to work with the band, we knew those were going to be fun days because there was going to be acting involved.  Everyone else just had to come up to their level, which was great for me because it gave me so much more to edit with.

Taylor, who are your musical influences?

TAYLOR:  That’s a really good question.  My musical obsession for the last few years has been this guy, named Josh Ritter, who is kind of a singer/songwriter/folk guy.  My real-life band, The Cumberland Kids, is named after one of his songs.  Also, Weird Al Yankovic, has been a massive inspiration for me and my songwriting partners.

So, your vibe is this folk-rock.

TAYLOR:  Yeah, that’s what I’m writing mostly.  My listening is kind of all over the place, but definitely that is what I’m writing.

Kassie, who do you like listening to?

KASSIE:  It all depends on what cocktail I have in my hand.

Photo: JPI

NATHAN:  Let me chime in on that too! I like jazz, blues, and country music, but imagine what my house was like because I have a lot of instruments here, always with the hope that Taylor would at least become interested in music.  I have congas, bass guitar, keyboards, you name it, and for a while, he wasn’t interested at all, and one day, I woke up and he was playing an acoustic guitar.  Then, the next thing I know, he is writing and singing folk music.  I’m thinking, “Wait a minute!” It was an important lesson for me that just because you want something for your children, doesn’t mean that is what they want for themselves.  We never pushed acting on Taylor.  He chose it on his own.  It’s exciting for me mostly because it was his choice.

KASSIE:  He’s a natural.

And speaking of that, Taylor, in the trailer nothing came across forced or pushed.  Obviously, we are all talking you up here, not that you need it.

NATHAN:  I’ll tell you this, Michael.  During the shoot, Taylor insisted on calling me “Nathan”, and I had a problem with it, but he basically told me to get over it because it’s his set, his movie, and while we are shooting, I’m “Nathan”, and he’ll call me dad later.  I’m still struggling with that but he was the boss.

TAYLOR:  It’s hard to walk that line and not make it weird for your crew, you know?

NATHAN:  I get it.

Photo: KarmicReleaseLTD

KASSIE:  It’s weird for me because when he would go, “Robbie is going to do this, and Nathan is going to do that,” I’d go, “Who are Robbie and Nathan?  Aren’t they your mom and dad?”

TAYLOR:  While I was writing the script I called him over, and I said, “Dad, I wrote you a really good role, and I think we are actually going to do this.  I’m giving you a once in a lifetime chance to name your own character.  Do you want to name him after a Greek hero, or one of your siblings?”  He didn’t take his chance.  So, you know what?  It’s “Nathan” now.  It’s easier for everybody.  We don’t have to break the method acting fourth wall.  (Laughs)

Do you think you would work with Nathan and Kassie again? (Laughs)

TAYLOR:  Oh, my God, are you kidding?

NATHAN:  That’s my contract: Kassie has got to be in it.  So, let me say this about Kassie, you had mentioned something about how much she has been working, and I look at Kassie as the James Brown of daytimes soaps.  She is the hardest working woman in daytime television.

Photo: JPI

She is pretty spectacular. Kassie started on Guiding Light, had a long career on One Life, and then went to General Hospital, then to Days of our Lives.  It’s been amazing that we have been able to see her have a comeback in more ways that one.

KASSIE:  Nathan has jumped from soap to soap as well, and when you’ve done it, you just think it’s over.  It’s not like your regular acting profession jobs when you go out and you know you’re going to audition for twenty-five things and get one role for a short amount of time.  When you go in day in and day out and are creating all of this stuff on a soap opera, and then it ends, you go, “Well, now what am I supposed to do?”  I haven’t been on a set in 6 months, and I feel like I won’t ever work again.  Soaps are just a totally different head trip and so it can be really hard.

Courtesy/ABC

Nathan, do you have a favorite Hank Gannon moment from One Life to Live?

NATHAN:  Oh wow.  Man, there were so many of them.  I can tell you the funniest, to me, maybe not so funny to Hillary B. Smith though.  I think it was during a live show. This was during the time when I had a lot of dialogue.  But this particular day, I had one line, and the line was to Hillary and it was, “How are you feeling?” and her response was, “Well, I’m feeling the way I always feel, and blah, blah, blah, blah, blah”.  So, during the entire day, I’d see Hillary, and I’d say, “Hey, how you feeling?”  Maybe nineteen times before we started shooting, “Hey, how you feeling?” and she’d had about enough of it.  So, fast forward to “5, 4,3,2,1 action”, and now, I say, “How you doing?”  If you could see the look in her eyes, it is like, “I will kill you.”  So, she says, “You know how I’m doing.  I’m doing what I’m always doing,” so she could get her line out.  So, once again, she saved Nathan’s ass with that.  One stupid line … and I blew it.  I just remember that one because I just know Hilary wanted to strangle me.  She probably still wants to.

And on that note (laughs) I wanted to thank you all so much for this. I hope you find success with this little gem of a film, Taylor.
