‘The Young and the Restless’ Joshua Morrow Reveals Shooting Nick Newman’s Upcoming AA Meeting Scenes Were Tough for Him

As The Young and the Restless’ Nick Newman continues to be in the throes of his fentanyl dependency, actor Joshua Morrow has been given one of the most harrowing stories of his over three decades on the top-rated CBS daytime drama.

Last week, viewers saw Nick’s life almost come to an end when he OD’d, in front of the entire Newman family, no less, and in the ironic twist is he was brought back to life by an amnesiac Matt Clark (Roger Howarth) and given CPR by his ex, Phyllis Summers (Michelle Stafford).

Coming up, Nick will attend some semblance of an AA meeting to try to get the help he needs to face his addiction. “That was very difficult. In fact, I told them, ‘I can’t rehearse it. This is a one-shot deal, because after it, I’m gonna have to go and sit in a dark room. We got it in one take,” shared the actor with TV Insider.

THE PATH TO RECOVERY WON’T BE EASY FOR NICK

Today on June 1, in Soap Steph’s Daytime TV Dish newsletter, another piece of the conversation with Morrow was shared when he was shooting on those scenes where it was clear it had not been smooth sailing.

Joshua said, “The day that I shot this sort of AA meeting scene (coming up), that kind of hung around me for a little bit. But I can leave it at the door now pretty easy. There’s this koi pond with these fish as I leave, and I walk out the building and I say bye to the fish, and I leave everything with them.”

Morrow also shared that Nick’s journey back from addiction is nowhere near done, and its ramifications on the nucleus of the Newman family huge. “OD seems pretty rock bottom-y, but the fans will just have to stay tuned. There’s still more runway here to go. This isn’t going to be a quick fix for him.”

As viewers know, Nick is obsessed with vengeance against Matt Clark but will he ever get it now that Matt “seems’ like a whole other person due to his memory loss? Stay tuned.

So, are you looking forward to Joshua’s upcoming scenes as Nick goes to an emotional AA meeting? How do you think this story should come to a conclusion, or will it now that Nick will always be an addict? Weigh-in via the comment section below.

Joshua Morrow has been easily doing his best work since Cassie’s death in 2005. I’ve always adored him, but his work in this storyline is really showing just how fantastic he is. He deserves this recognition after such a long time. And I cannot wait to see the upcoming scenes, and loving his new head shot!

He’s like the star of show to me now I love him more than when he was younger he’s just wonderful.

He’s absolutely killing it! Great work. And today’s episode (Tuesday) we saw the characters interacting in new ways. Compassionate. Caring. Vulnerable. Different. For a change. Loved it.

It was then that after playing the part of Stephanie for 25 years that Susan made the decision to retire from acting and in one of the most heartbreaking sendoffs, passes away from lung cancer in Brooke’s arms in November of 2012. As for Ian Buchanan, he played Dr. Warwick, psychiatrist, from 1993 to 1999.  He returned for other runs in 2014 and 2017.  Buchanan took home his Daytime Emmy in 1997 for his work as James. Both Susan and Ian shared their thoughts on coming back to The Bold and the Beautiful, for Susan 14 years later since he exited and for Ian close to 9 years since his last appearance below.

Susan said, “It’s definitely like coming home in a way, even though it’s not the same studio. It’s really lovely to see old faces and old faces with new faces. It takes you back mentally. You start remembering what it was like back then, even things like how much your feet would ache at the end of the day from wearing six-inch heels. It was just lovely to be back and see everybody.”

Ian expressed, “It’s a mind trip, you know. When I was sitting looking at the big Forrester set, it was like stepping back in time, almost. It takes you back mentally, and you start remembering what it was like when you were here before.”

THE 411 ON TIA AND KALISTA

Speaking with TV Insider, about their soapy experience in Fairmont Crest, Tabitha Brown previewed about her host with the most, “Tia is very professional, but she’s a girl’s girl. She is a protector of women and wants to tell their stories in a beautiful way, but she also wants to make sure they’re seen in a very good light.”

However, Burruss previews that Kalista arrives with a score to settle. “She’s spicy,” shared the recording artist. “I always love playing somebody that has come to start trouble. It’s always fun to play a villain of sorts, but Kalista feels like she’s been done wrong and she’s hurt by what she feels has been done to her. So Kalista is stirring up trouble, but she feels justified putting Dani on blast. Kalista is ready for some payback.”

Beyond the Gates is produced by CBS Studios, as part of the CBS Studios/NAACP Venture, in partnership with P&G Studios, a division of Procter & Gamble. Created by head writer Michele Val Jean, executive producers include Val Jean, Sheila Ducksworth, Julie Carruthers, Tracey Thomson, Leon W. Russell, Derrick Johnson, Anna Saalfeld and Lela Coffey.

Beyond the Gates is broadcast weekdays on CBS (2:00-3:00 PM, ET/1:00-2:00 PM, PT) and is available to stream on Paramount+**.
