Y&R’s Roger Howarth on What to Expect from Matt Clark, “There’s No Limit on the Kind of Destruction That Somebody Like Him is Capable Of”
Matt Clark, one of the all-time baddies in the history of The Young and the Restless, turns out is alive and well and living in Los Angeles under the alias of Mitch Bacall. The even bigger shocker that in a stellar list of previous portrayers including: Eddie Cibrian and Rick Heart, the newest incarnation is being played by daytime favorite, Roger Howarth (ex-ATWT, GH and OLTL).
When Howarth was announced at joining the number one daytime soap opera in a unspecified role, it had fans wondering how his character would tie-in to the LA noir mystery that Y&R kicked-of last month. In story, Noah Newman (Lucas Adams) has now woken up out of his coma from his car crash, and Sienna Bacall (Tamara Braun), who is married to Mitch, and is pretty sketchy herself look to be caught up in the dangerous underbelly of LA club life.
Add to that, Sharon (Sharon Case) just ran into Matt Clark outside The Shadow Room, and he just glared at her. She ran to Nick (Joshua Morrow), who was stunned to hear that the man who framed him for murder almost 25 years ago is alive! Now as the story is about to heat up, Roger Howarth sat down with Y&R Insider to offer up some of his initial thoughts at playing Matt/Mitch, and joining the cast of the iconic daytime drama series.

“I love a character that has a secret and he is not who he says he is,” shared Roger. “He’s been living in this kind of world that I think is very important to him as Mitch BaCall. Mitch’s relationships, although they aren’t necessarily Matt’s relationships, are very important to him, and so there’s a complexity to it. There’s a self-centered arrogance to him that is just so fun. There’s kind of no limit to the kind of destruction that somebody like him is capable of.”
When Roger set foot at The Young and the Restless, he knew the likes of former GH and OLTL cast members including: Jason Thompson (ex-Patrick, GH, now Billy, Y&R), Michelle Stafford (ex-Nina, GH, now Phyllis, Y&R), Hayley Erin (ex-Kiki, GH, now Claire, Y&R), and Valarie Pettiford (ex-Sheila, OLTL, now Amy, Y&R) to name but a few.
“I was super happy to arrive here. I felt this kind of joy at seeing familiar faces of people that I genuinely liked,” exclaimed Roger. “Then, I found out that also making an entry into this beautiful imaginary world was Tamara Braun (ex-Kim, GH et al), and to know that I got a chance to work with her again (is special).”

Roger is in story with the long-suffering duo of Shick, played by series vets, Sharon Case and Joshua Morrow. Here he shares his initial reaction to the popular stalwarts, “When you meet Sharon Case and Joshua Morrow, you realize why the audience loves the so much. They’re so likable, they’re so sweet. They’re just straightforward,” shared Roger. “They were both so welcoming to me and so genuine in their excitement about what we were going get to do together. I can’t imagine a better entry into a cast that’s gotten all of that time together, to just be immediately included by them was pretty awesome.”
Now below, check out Y&R’s chat with Roger Howarth.
Then let us know, are you excited to see Roger play yet another bad guy on the soaps? Do you think his version of Matt Clark will be even more dangerous and twisted that the previous versions? Share your thoughts and theories via the comment section below.
I might be in the minority, but I’m cautiously optimistic to see where this goes. I’m excited to see Roger and Tamara back in Daytime, and Y&R desperately needs a shot of adrenaline in the form of a long-term villain-type of character to cause chaos and keep the drama heightened. Roger fits that bill perfectly, and I hope Matt has staying power, regardless of his past. Let’s just hope Josh Griffith can pull this off, and not let down the fans once again, like with the summer French Riviera snooze fest.
Side note: as much as I love Billy Flynn, I still can’t buy him as Cane. Especially seeing Daniel Goddard on GH, and knowing what he’s capable of acting wise. If they wanted a darker, more ruthless Cane, he could have played that part perfectly. I just don’t understand the need for a recast when DG was available.
Because they think he insulted Beth Maitland because he did not want to do a love story with her. It was not personal they thought it was he probably knew what we all did her daughter was best friends with Lilly it just did not work I hate that they did that it is a total joke and it is no offense to BF but it’s a joke

Josh Griffith Steps Down as Executive Producer of ‘The Young and the Restless,’ Remains Head Writer; Sally MacDonald Upped to Sole EP
The Young and the Restless has made some key changes behind the scenes with the news on Wednesday, May 6 that Josh Griffith, who has served as the series executive producer and head writer concurrently, has decided to relinquish the production duties of his tenure, and concentrate on just crafting the tales for the citizens of Genoa City.
Sally MacDonald, the longtime Daytime Emmy-winning director of Y&R who was serving as the soap’s co-executive producer, will now be upped to the solo EP of the top-rated daytime drama series.
As first reported by Soap Central, Griffith will continue as Y&R’s head writer in the restructuring, in the position he has held since 2019 with the departure of former EP and head writer, Mal Young. Soap Opera Digest also confirmed Griffith was stepping down as the soap’s executive producer.

In fact, it was back in August 2018, that the veteran Griffith returned to Y&R as supervising producer. Once, Mal Young departed the show, Griffith became the show’s head writer and co-executive producer with another longtime Y&R behind the scenes veteran in Tony Morina. Later in 2023, when Morina exited the soap, Josh became the sole executive producer.
Throughout his soap opera career, Griffith has written for Santa Barbara, One Life to Live, As the World Turns, General Hospital and Days of our Lives and co-created the defunct Sunset Beach.
MacDonald has been a CBS daytime vet since back in 1983 and joined The Young and the Restless in 1989 as a production supervisor, working her way up to director. The directing team at Y&R that has included MacDonald has won 8 Daytime Emmys along the way and picked up a Directors Guild of America Award.

‘Days of Our Lives’ Alum Al Calderon Shares Parting Thoughts on ‘Brilliant Minds’ Following its Cancellation
Last week, NBC pulled the plug on the medical drama, Brilliant Minds, as the last 6 episodes of its second and final season will begin to air later this month. The series which saw its ratings plummet was taken off the schedule in February, with reports of it being on the bubble until finally the decision was handed down.
Al Calderon, who departed Days of our Lives in the role of Javi Hernandez in 2025 to join the primetime series as Nurse Nico Silva, was a part of the stellar cast that also featured One Life to Live alum, Teddy Sears (ex-Chad Bennett) and series star, Zachary Quinto.
On Brilliant Minds, Quinto plays neurology physician Oliver Wolf, who’s character and the series is inspired by the life and books of neurologist. Oliver Sacks. The series focuses on the medical mysteries of the mind, as Wolf a larger-than-life neurologist and his team of interns explore the last great frontier, the human mind, while grappling with their own relationships and mental health.

In a real-life twist, Days of our Lives announced Calderon’s successor, Jacob Martinez as the new Javi debuting this June on April 30. Come May 1, NBC canceled Brilliant Minds. Now, on Wednesday, May 6, Al Calderon took a moment to reflect on his experience at Bronx General Hospital, the backdrop of Brilliant Minds, via a post on his Instagram.
“Thank you Brilliant Minds” Calderon began. “What a life changing experience. Met forever friends. Learned from the absolute best. Was reminded that my voice mattered. Learned that it’s okay to believe in yourself. Felt like I was part of something. While our beautiful show has gone onto glory we’ve got 6 more incredible episodes to share with you starting May 27th.”
Al also added, “NBC and Warner Brothers TV, thank you for allowing me to be silly and quippy, Demane Davis, Michael Grassi, David Rapaport, Zachary Quinto, thank you for all of your encouragement and support.”
As his heartfelt post came to a close, Calderon explained why the experience on Brilliant Minds was life-changing: “I’ve been at this a long time and this show gave me hope for the future of my career. I owe it to these incredible individuals. Our crew. Our writers. Our editors. The whole shebang. I love you all endlessly.”
Taking to the comment threads were several of Al’s Brilliant Minds and DAYS former co-stars, and even his successor, Jacob Martinez jumped in and shared, “YOU are brilliant 💕”
What did you think of Al’s heartfelt message about his time on Brilliant Minds? Will you miss seeing him on DAYS and on the primetime series? Looking forward to seeing what he will do next? Share your thoughts in the comment section.

‘Days of Our Lives’ Jacob Martinez on LGBTQ Representation, ‘Javi is the Kind of Character I Wish I Could Have Looked Up to On Television as a Kid’
Next month, Jacob Martinez will make his highly-anticipated debut as the recast Javi Martinez on Peacock. Martinez takes over the role from Al Calderon who wraps on-screen in May. Since DAYS tapes ten months ahead of streaming new episodes, Jacob has been firmly entrenched in Salem for quite awhile now.
Martinez who is out in real life, shared how he realized the importance of LGBTQ and Latino representation in movies, television and streaming projects, and on DAYS when Javi is now played by Jacob, he will be in the thick of the drama with the man he had married, Leo Stark and the other members of the Hernandez family and more.
The young actor who is also quite the singer, spoke with OUT about working on a soap opera for the first time in his career, and what makes Javi, one of the most beloved and unique character’s on the soaps these days. In an ironic twist, Javi is a paramedic, and Jacob has also worked similarly in a related field.
“Being Hispanic, gay, and an emergency medical technician definitely helped me draw from real-life experiences when I got the role, explained Martinez. “But after reading the first few scripts, it became clear to me what truly drives this character: his heart. Javi is the type of person who constantly puts others before himself — not only on the job, but in his personal life as well.”
JAVI CAN CHANGE LIVES
Jacob who was born in Nebraska, didn’t publicly come out until he was 22, and shared he didn’t have the easiest time growing up: “You can probably imagine what it was like growing up as a closeted, gay, Christian boy in a conservative red state, with a preacher for a grandfather and a dash of Hispanic intolerance.”
Speaking on his takeaway from his time thus far inhabiting the on-screen life of Javi Hernandez on the long-running soap, Martinez expressed, “The truth is, Javi is the kind of character I wish I could have looked up to on television as a kid. Getting the chance to hopefully be that inspiration for another kid somewhere in a small town makes it all worthwhile.”
Make sure to circle June 30 for the new Javi to show up on your screens in Salem. Now the question is, will he be back in the story with a new love, trying to get back with Leo, or will forces keep them continually apart?
What did you think about Jacob’s thoughts on the importance of having a role model such as Javi for young latino and gay men to look up to on TV and to see themselves reflected in our pop culture? Share your thoughts in the comment section.
