‘The Young and the Restless’ Bests ‘Beyond the Gates’ and ‘General Hospital’ and Wins 2026 WGA Award for Daytime Drama
UPDATED: The writing team from The Young and the Restless made it a back-to-back in the writing for a daytime drama series in ceremonies held tonight in New York City at the 78th annual Writers Guild Awards.
Typically, the Writers Guild of America holds two concurrent ceremonies – one in New York and another in Los Angeles. However, the WGA West canceled their show as its staff remains on strike as of February 17 seeking higher wages and “just cause” protections of employee disciplines. The WGA East proceeded as usual with the ceremony.
The 2026 edition of the WGA Awards is handing out kudos in the fields of: Screenplay, Television, Streaming, News, Radio/Audio, and Promotional Writing and more.

Since The Young and the Restless head writer, Josh Griffith went Fi-Core several years ago, he is illegible to receive an award. However, his writing team consisting of Associate Head Writers: Jeff Beldner, Marla Kanelos, Dave Ryan; Writers: Susan Banks, Amanda L. Beall, Marin Gazzaniga, Rebecca McCarty, Madeleine Phillips, are eligible to receive the honors for the soap opera.
Y&R took home the 2025 WGA writers award prize as well, breaking the four-year streak of Days of our Lives. This year, the top-rated CBS soap opera bested Beyond the Gates in their historic first-ever nomination, and ABC’s long-running General Hospital.
Three episodes were submitted by each show for competition. The Young and the Restless writing team won for the following episodes: #13080 – Cane reunites with Colin, #13196 – Phyllis and Sharon kidnapped at the abandoned clinic, and #13259 – Cricket and Danny Wedding.
Other big winners for the night thus far are: Drama Series and New Series, The Pitt, Original Screenplay, Sinners Adapted Screenplay, One Battle After Another and Comedy Series, The Studio. The complete list of winners can be found here.

That’s a load of crap! Over General Hosital and Beyond the Gates? It’s BTG’s first year, so that may explain their losing, but General Hospital?! PLEASE! Y&R is so bad, it’s ridiculous! Now this will be another reason to keep Griffith!
Totally agree with Lewis!!!! It’s sooooo bad! Bringing back all these long gone villains like Patty and Matt is ridiculous!
Maybe the panelists were watching a very old episode of Y&R, because the stuff they put out now stinks to high heaven.
Stinks to high heaven? What?
Y&R is not #1 for (seems) decades— Other soaps, through the years, have been much better–I believe if there was an investigation into Y&R ratings that keeps it #1 without fail, no matter how bad it really is/was at times stinks to high heaven– Y&R has had some gawd awful stories and simply no wehere near as #1—
They lose over a million viewers from The Price is Right. If it weren’t for TPIR, Y&R would be a lot lower on the network totem pole.
Is this some kind of joke?
…”we are the LOUSIEST!..but we’re still #1 folks”.

What… hOW?!!? There is NO WAY that The Young and the Restless beat out Beyond the Gates. Whoever voted must be insane.
No offense but did the WGA actually watch or read the scripts for these three nominated soaps. Beyond the Gates is a much better written show than the Young and the Snoozefest and so is General Hospital. I can’t wait to find out what scripts were submitted for the three shows.
The article said what episodes were submitted
The article did not show the 3 episodes Beyond the Gates and General Hospital submitted. It’s sad watching the current writing regime at Y&R go digging through the old episodes looking for dynamic villains like Ian Ward, Patty Williams and Matt Clark to resurrect because they are unable to create their own compelling characters people want to watch. This victory may fool some people but true soap fans know the real deal.
clearly none of the voters watched the programs
well this is an interesting win! here is the problem beyond the gates is a good show i watch it everyday but the over hype could be be causing a backfire ! on these soap forums the crowd acts like there are only 2 soaps the new btg and gh ! there fans seem to believe they deserve every award out there and days yandr and bold which i must say i watch and enjoy all three are constantly dragged and put downAs far as gh enough is enough in the last several years its won a dozen awards it didn’t deserve! This year alone a best drama win an johnathan Jackson in supporting at the daytime emmy’s are examples of awards that were not deserved ! Gates will definitely have its turn but congrats to yand r there are other soaps on and more deserve the kudos than the 2 the fans want To win repeatedly!
That’s insane that they won anything! Please enough of the AI stupidness! So dumb and boring! Too much air time for Phyllis!!!
Thank you! When’s the last time they won a meaningful Emmy Award?
Beyond the Gates is the best soap opera around. All their content is something believable and it’s refreshing..
Young and restless deserves the best day time of the year
Writers Guild of America must be beyond the gates of stupidity. GH team members are writing better than ever. Expect another Emmy this year with great performances.
agreed! the pace of the writing on GH is much better than anything Y&R has given viewers in years. Y&R normally has what, 6 or 7 actors on a day, and most scenes don’t move the plot along, super slow paced. On GH, if you miss a day, you defineitly missed something.
It’s a great show. And this year they have pulled out all the stops
I am not a fan of Y&R. I think it has very poor story lines and less than great acting. Only thing worse is Bold & Beautiful, where lack of cast members creates issues for make interesting relationships!
GH tackles serious issues….breast cancer, dementia, bi-polar disorder, alcoholism, gender issues, youth struggles, family dysfunction. These are things happening in the world and many can relate to.
I want a 50 yr marriage celebration to come into play! Keep some longevity in more relationships.
Obviously the people who voted do not watch the show. Y&R is the worst written show on television — laughably so.
3 episodes decided the win:
Caine reunites w/ Colin, Phyllis & Sharon kidnapped in the abandoned clinic, & Cricket & Danny’s wedding.

ABC Announces ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Texas Spin-Off Gets Straight-to-Series Order
In a surprise move, coming a week after ABC unveiled its 2026-2027 fall television schedule, Grey’s Anatomy is getting a new spinoff co-created by the original series’ creator/executive producer Shonda Rhimes.
The new untitled medical drama will be written and executive produced by Rhimes and Grey’s Anatomy showrunner/executive producer Meg Marinis under the Shondaland and 20th Television umbrella. In addition, long-running ‘Grey’s’ star Ellen Pompeo will also serve as an EP of the spinoff.
The upcoming new series will debut midseason in 2027. This will be the first of Grey’s franchise not set in urban city or West Coast locale. According to Deadline, the new “edgy drama is about a team at a rural West Texas medical center — the last chance for care before miles of nowhere.”

In a statement, Marinis shared, “I am incredibly excited to expand the Grey’s Anatomy universe. This opportunity will bring new characters and stories to life that will embody the same heart, emotion and connection audiences have loved from Grey’s for more than two decades — all set in my home state of Texas. I am so grateful to Shonda Rhimes for creating this dynamic world and feel so fortunate that I get to be a part of it.”
A NEW GROUP OF DOCTORS IN RURAL TEXAS
The Texas spinoff will feature a a new group of doctors, but there will be some connection to the OG Grey’s Anatomy and possibly to Debbie Allen’s character of Catherine Fox. The amount of episodes in the series order has not yet been determined. Previous Grey’s Anatomy spinoffs were the defunct Station 19 and Private Practice.
Previously, Grey’s Anatomy was renewed for its upcoming 23rd season while the amount of episodes is unclear. The last two seasons the series produced 18 episodes.
It should also be noted, Grey’s Anatomy and the Texas spinoff would likely share a time period, which requires limited-run orders for both with Grey’s premiering in the fall, followed by the spinoff on the midseason programming block.
