‘General Hospital’s’ Steve Burton Shares Reaction to His Lead Actor Daytime Emmy Nomination, ‘It Was to Honor Leslie Charleson’

The 53rd Annual Daytime Emmy Award nominations kicked-off on Monday with the announcements of four major categories including, Outstanding Lead Performer in a Daytime Drama Series — Actor, and among the nominees is General Hospital’s Steve Burton (Jason Morgan).
Burton is already a two-time Daytime Emmy winner in the Supporting Actor category for his roles as GH’s Jason and his turn as Dylan McAvoy on Y&R. However, Steve is yet to win in the Lead Actor category and he has received 11 nominations along the way in his daytime career.
Following the reveal that he is a 2026 Daytime Emmy nominee, he and his GH co-star, podcast co-host and comedy show partner, Bradford Anderson (Spinelli) taped a special edition of their That’s Awesome podcast just featuring Burton’s reaction to the news.

FOR LESLIE CHARLESON
Steve expressed, “I know it’s such a cliche to say, ‘I’m just so honored to be nominated.’ But truly, I’m so grateful to be nominated, so grateful to just be on the show off and on for 30 plus years and to be nominated with the guys in my category. Just to get the opportunity. Frank (Valentini, executive producer, GH) texted me right away. I was just like, ‘Thank you for the opportunity to get to do what I do.'”
Taking in the moment, Burton thanked those who helped him select the material for his nominated reel. “Unless you win, you don’t get to say things. So. I’m going just say a few things: Elizabeth Korte (co-head writer, GH) helped me a lot with the material, (as did) Michelle Henry, who’s a producer on the show, Laura Wright (Carly, GH), and then my wife Michelle (Lundstrom). I believe it was Jill Phelps who told me that when A Martinez felt like he had a great show or great scenes, he would mark it down. So, when Emmy time comes, you have all the show numbers written down, and you don’t have to think about it, because that’s half the battle (finding the material).
Burton explained how meaningful this nomination is for him, because of playing the scenes of Jason losing Monica, and his closeness with the late, great Leslie Charleson.
“The nomination’s an amazing thing, and it’s beautiful, but really it’s to honor Leslie Charleson. A lot of my material was because of her, and how I started on the show as a Quartermaine, it just means a ton,” shared Burton. “Maurice Benard (Sonny, GH) has obviously has been instrumental, and I’ve said it from day one and I’ll shout it from the rooftops. If it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t be here, and to be working with the people that we work with is incredible.”

SHOULD JOHN OLIVER BE NAMED HOST OF THE DAYTIME EMMYS?
During the end of his conversation with Anderson, Steve suggested that the host of the Daytime Emmy should be Last Week Tonight’s John Oliver, who recently guest starred as the head of the WSB named Z on General Hospital, and is soon to show up on Days of Our Lives in a mystery role in August.
Thus far, the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences has not revealed their host for the upcoming ceremony to be held on October 30 in a venue to be named in Hollywood, California.
You can watch Steve sharing his reaction to receiving his 2026 Lead Actor Daytime Emmy nomination below on a special segment on the That’s Awesome podcast.
Now let us know, are you glad that Steve chose scenes surrounding Jason mourning the loss of the woman that raised him, Monica Quartermaine for his Emmy reel? What do you think of John Oliver as a suggestion to host the Daytime Emmys? Weigh-in via the comment section below.

Now, five leading ladies of the soaps are vying for the gold for Lead Actress and the category marked the first-ever nominations for CBS daytime’s Beyond the Gates when two actresses made the final cut. Only General Hospital is not represented among the actresses this year after Nancy Lee Grahn (Alexis Davis) took home the trophy last year.

Are these roles really necessary?
OMG HOT! I pray Drucilla is coming back asap!!!!!!! <3 <3<3
I think this is so great fresh meat. These guys combined if Drucilla comes back for Neil is so great! Sharon back with Nick and or Adam is what I need this show to do. Victor and Nikki are so yesterday and would be great to have them to go to for advice although they are so evil still. They have not matured like Mrs. C yet.
Much better something to look at great for a change because if I look at sleezy Victor and slimy Tucker I’ll die! <3
These guys are NOT necessary. What can they possibly bring to the table that those talented but fired women didn’t bring?
And look at the cast list now…the men far out number the women. So unless these guys are gay, who are they going to be paired with? ‘Cause we all know everyone has to be “paired” with someone.
These guys are very needed! I wish we could have some young same sex couples to modern up the show and heat. LOVE all the new changes. I pray Drucilla is coming back. No one for Neil is ever going to fit. lily needs her mom and I would love to see her with her grandchildren. Like Jill! Nikki with her grand kids and kids is cold. I am not a Nikki fan nor Victor I hope Chelsea leaves she just does not fit on Y&R she gave away her baby living a few miles up the road and can’t believe she cried over the one she lost. What about the one she just had??? 🙂
Double yum!
O.M.G SEXY
I would love to see Drucilla come back now more than ever!
I just don’t get it, they fire talented actors and actresses for eye candy, I don’t care about looking at some body in the gym I want to see someone who can run a scene like Michael & Melissa did today..That is why we tune in to Y&R
Well, here is proof positive that TPTB feed the fans a bunch of bullcrap all the time. Supposedly there isbig budget cut so they fire, Genie, Marcy, Jennifer, etc and then oh wait, hire two new actors, sure thats the way to cut money. They fire who they dont.like and hire who they do! We arent stupid!
You’ve got that right. It’s ridiculous!
They fired the bad actors who were a waist of time. Drucilla needs to come back. Lily should be with one of these men because she and cane are so boring to bad they are to young these hot men would look so great with Sharon she is the hottest women on the show
I have to disagree with you about Drucilla and Sharon Case. Sadly Sharon Case is going the way Cameron Diaz is and not aging well. Sure she has a great body still, but her face, while beautiful, is aging fast.
Melody Thomas Scott, on the other hand, looks AMAZING for her 55 years and Amelia Heinle keeps looking better and better. Marcy Rylan is gorgeous as is Jennifer Landon (especially in this week’s episodes with the new hair color). Elizabeth Hendrickson is very beautiful too. I think Sharon being the hottest is only because she dresses that way or because she sleeps with every man she crosses paths with. As far as hotness, Lauren (Tracey Bregman) has Sharon Case beat. That woman is amazing in every sense of the word and Michelle Stafford oozes sex appeal just by standing there.
I need to see them in the roles, and find out who they will be connected to before passing judgement. I too, think it is a bit fishy they fired amazing actresses for budget reasons then hired two hunks. Real soap fans watch for the stories not for the bodies. But you cannot judge a book by its cover so hopefully these guys can act as well as look pretty for the camera.
Budget reasons, firing vets and replacing them with cheap hair models. It’s been done on the cancelled soaps, remember Guiding Light putting actors that played Blake, Ross, Beth, and Alexandra on recurring and bringing on cheaper actors that played Daisy, Ava, Cyrus, Remy, Remy’s gf, Ashley, etc.
It’s bad when the #1 soap has to do this also. MAB must have really used so much of the budget, especially with her Nick at Night celebrity guests on the show constantly.
Um Blake, MAB did have an overbloated budget, which is true. Secondly, which is NOT true, she did not bring two actors over from Nick at Night’s ‘Hollywood Heights’ (Robert Adamson playing Noah and Hunter King playing Summer). That was all Jill Farren Phelps. I will say this though, both Robert and based on the one episode that I saw Hunter in (which was yesterday), they are a huge improvement over Kevin G. Schmidt (ex-Noah) and Lindsay Bushman (ex-Summer).
As for Redaric Williams (Trey Douglas), his character is expected to have a familial tie to Genoa City (Sarge, played by Darnell Williams).
As for the eye candy, I like what I’m seeing so far! :)~~
wow – 2 more men of color ! – will we see them more than twice a month??
They fired “bad actors”? Genie Francis, 1/2 of the most popular couple ever on a soap? And bring back Drucilla, only a very small portion of fans think that! Victoria R. Couldnt get along with any of the cast! And Lily and Cane are boring? Yeah, thats why they are the number one favorite coyple in Soap Opera Digest week after week! Have an opinion, but at least have some facts behind it to back it up! And Sharon has a long, long way to go before she is worth anything to any man!
I have been hearing this story about VR for years who is in charge here actors who do not want to work with someone. Boo Hoo! I have a business and if my employees and that is what actors are employees can not do their job and get along then they know where the exit door is. I am just sick of hearing this go to work do your job and keep personal feelings out of it. So if JG feels she would be good for story and if you do not like it leave.
Me too, kay/kay. I actually saw VR in Culver City, CA at a train store once. She didn’t want anyone to notice her, but I did. I didn’t approach her, but just casually glanced at her, but heaven forbid I do that. I can only imagine how she is to work with, if the stories are true.
If she comes back, I hope she will get along with everyone. Otherwise, she can keep her diva personality to herself. She seems to have enough going on outside of Y&R anyway.
Wow! Why not give Josh Griffith a chance to write some quality story. We have all begged for MAB to be fired and now she is, why not give this writer a chance to fix things. All of the actresses let go were good at acting but they didn’t grab on at Y&R with the exception of Abby. I’m not going to miss Genevieve, Harmony, Heather or any of the others for that matter. I look forward to some quality story and some new blood. I support the new regime at this time.
I totally agree with you toscanti. We got what we wanted. Now, let’s sit back and enjoy the new ride!
I never understand why they fire people and then hire others. Why not just use the actors you already have?
Mo, the reason why Genie and Debbi were let go was because they were eating up a huge chunk of the casting budget (from what I heard, Genie was taking up nearly 1/4 of the casting budget…………..she don’t come cheap). Why they let Marcy go is beyond me. That was a huge mistake IMO. Letting Jennifer Landon go as Heather would easily have her exit the show with Michael Graz, who is leaving on his own terms (Daniel) and baby Lucy.
Though I would agree that Genie Francis did not come cheap, it would surprise me greatly if she was taking up anything like 1/4 of the casting budget. Think about the math on that. No matter how much she was making, I’d lay money she was NOT making more than Eric Braeden or Jeanne Cooper. So then you had three people taking up 3/4-plus of the budget, and everybody else dividing the quarter that was left over? It just seems very unlikely to me. Plus there are others in the cast who would not have come cheap either: Stephen Nichols, who probably could command as much as GF, and Debbi Morgan, who would also be close.
Daniel is leaving?!
Are they going to do anything with the Daisy story or just leave it hanging? No way she would just leave Daniel and Lucy.
I applaud the move to diversity but I hope JFP and Josh are referencing Bill Bell’s bible and mission for Y&R (something his daughter-in-law seemed to ignore) and focusing on strong storytelling done well. I like eye candy, too, but I want good acting and a serious approach to the daily chapters.
Jeanne Cooper in her recent book included some wonderful words about how to make a soap opera strong, as well as Bill Bell’s take on the genre (and he was a master).
Meanwhile, good luck, men. I’ll be watching to see how you fit into Genoa City. Best wishes!
Well here we go again. Step one in place to destroy a soap: fire seasoned actors from established soap families and replace them with eye candy. Diversity is important; so why did they get rid of Malcolm and reduce Sophia to a sounding board for another confusing character, Tucker (I just don’t get him). Neil is barely seen.
I will continue to keep an open mind, but just so the PTB understand, I’ve switched the channel to DAYS almost every day (that I haven’t worked) for the past several months.
So many people complained about Darius McCrary as Malcolm. No, he definitely was no Shemar Moore in the looks department, but I thought his acting was good enough.
Sophia, on the other hand, I wish they would replace with another actress. I admit I liked her in the beginning, but now I do not care for her and, if they replaced her, they could give her something else to do.
I’m not meaning to start trouble with Ms. Mitchell’s weight, but I just can’t see how two men would fight over her. Not to mention that I get so distracted by the horrible wardrobe choices that they make for her to take the character seriously. A few weeks ago they had her in some black and white striped number – all that fabric was so jarring on the screen.
I don’t think Darius gelled on the show. He was not the right fit.
Sophia was interesting when she was telling Harmony off, but other than that, she has no story. She’s superfluous.
Black women are in short supply in GC so I can understand her being popular. 😉 But give her something to do other than being Tucker’s gopher or write her off the show completely.
I agree with you on several points. There are several model-worthy, gorgeous African American actors who lost their jobs on cancelled soaps. I just wonder if these newbies have the acting chops to carry mediocre stories?
Both of them are not good looking. I’m preparing for a snore fest.
Now now. Don’t judge a book by it’s cover. Unless you saw their portfolio, I don’t know how one can judge looks based on one photograph. 🙂
In any event, hopefully they will add something and not be a snooze fest.
Doesn’t matter Christine, I do not find them attractive at all.
Wow Scott, if these two aren’t good looking, who the hell is? Lol!
A lot of people. I don’t find them attractive. They do nothing for me.
They do something for me and I’m sure millions of other people out there with a pulse. Lovely indeed.
Let’s get back on track before we start hiring people. Not the least bit impressed with Nu/Noah or Nu/Summer really tired of kids upset with their parents boarding school would have worked for me until we get this show back on track. And really bored with the character of Nick he really does need some anger management classes.
O good I thought I was the only one who wasn’t impressed with the Nu/Noah. And when I saw Nick speaking to Summer at the coffeehouse the other day she looked so much like a young Sharon I thought for a moment they had SORAS’ed Faith. Just kidding but the actress looks more like Sharon than Phyllis. But I will try not to get too picky yet and give them time to get their new direction going. However on today’s show when Eden has dreams with clues that might show where Ricky hit the video of his murdering his girlfriend seemed like a odd direction to go to settel this Paul thing, but I will try to open-minded to see where it goes
I did not like nuNoah either. So tired of bratty kids.
Love it.
Good job Y&R, hopefully they won’t be just props and actually have a story to tell. As for the actresses and actors who were let go, hopefully they will find work elsewhere, some were useless, some couldn’t act and one in particular was given a silly storyline that just didn’t jive.
Yes, as an employee you should try and get along with others. But when most of who you work with, have a problem, you have to look at the person causing all this reaction. With Neil already involved with another, she isnt needed s/l wise.
Neil has not had a storyline in years and no they are not going to bring VR back she burned her bridges but I am worn out with tales of her antics . When we know Eric Braeden and Michelle Stafford play the same stupid games.Just do your job please and their our tons of actors who do not get along off set but make it work once the cameras roll.
Do they really need VR in order to bring back the character Dru? I think this is one of those cases when Dru has been off the canvas long enough that a re cast would make sense. They are many amazing Africian American actresses who could do justice to this role. I know that might not sit well with loyal fans of VR, but I would be open to a recast.
I think this is great because they will hopefully bring in African Americans to watch not to mention younger viewers. I am thinking they are probably into the music scene with Devon and Noah.
I maintain that as long as the new team is faithful to the vets and can prop them with some new characters that will help the ratings, then it is a good thing. I am still really ticked off at the firing of Marcy Rylan, though.
This is unnecessary, period.
I agree wirh u, too bad VR didnt before they canned her. Most keep their personal feelings out of it, we all work with some stupid folks that we have to endure if we want to stay employed!
They spice up y&r! They are very sexy and breath taking!!
