Y&R Expanding The Abbott Family! Casting New Contract Role of Andrew Abbott!

By Michael Fairman

Published

on

Who knew there was a never-before-heard of cousin of Genoa City’s Abbott Clan, named Andrew?  Well, according to Soap Opera Digest The Young and the Restless is expanding the Abbott clan with this contract role, which means another new character will hit the CBS soap soon, probably initially much to the chagrin of Y&R fans, who have begging the show to focus on the veteran characters.

On the bright side, the Abbott’s get an extended family member!  The casting notice that went out says the following: “The show is actively searching for ‘a strong leading man” in his “mid to late 30s’ to play the contract role of the ‘handsome and educated’ Andrew.  The character is also described as ‘very driven and ambitious.”

So what actor familiar to daytime or primetime television audiences, do you think would be a good fit as Andrew Abbott? What do you think about the series bringing in another new character?  OK with it?  Will it shake things up? Or, not needed? Who do you think Andrew Abbott would be romantically involved with on the canvas?  Weigh-in below in the comment section!

I certainly won’t be surprised if Brandon Barash (Johnny, GH) shows up in this role. If a former GH actor shows up on the show, I wouldn’t mind it being Jason Cook (Matt). I think he is a strong actor who could shine in scenes with Billy and Jack. Other soap actors not from GH that could be considered– Kyle Lowder, Jay Kenneth Johnson, Brandon Beemer, and my least favorite of the group- JP Lavoisier. Of course they could go brand new.

I know it is frustrating to see new characters when older ones are not seen as much or in as strong of storylines as we would like. But I did hear something from that would explain why it is done. A writer once told me that they only receive royalties for the characters they create. If that is true, it would explain one reason why new characters keep showing up on shows like Y&R and GH. Not saying that is good or bad… just saying that makes sense.

That would be so great! I love that guy! I vote yes!!! :O)

well,
I hope this Andrew Abbott will liven up Y&R, as it is now it puts me to sleep zzzzz!

hey! would he be Nikki and Jacks son lol ..

Oh would Victor Newman ever LOVE another Abbott around, especially it being Nikki’s Son !!! LOL

Ever since Jill Farren Phelps took over as Exec Producer, I’ve pretty much stopped watching because i too, started nodding off…lol!

How bout that dude who hooked up with Gigi from One Life to Live? God, I cannot remember his name but he wasn’t in the relaunch,

I was thinking of Rex Balsam but now I am not so sure. Can they please re cast Kyle? The dude that is playing him now reminds me of The Jolly Green Giant and he looks weird next to the petite Summer. I fully expect to see him wearing green leotards, green cap when kneeling down to Summer just to say,”Hoo! Hoo! Hoo! Green Giant.” He freaks me out, man. I mean, really.

Are you talking about Rex?

John-Paul?

Yes! SCORE! That lavosier (spelling) actor. he played Rex on OLTL. Perfect. Good suggestion.

I wonder why Y&R just does not bring Keemo home to Genoa City. This is Jack’s son from a Vietnam liaison. Luan, mother, died. Half-sister Mai is not a factor but… Keemo would be in his 40s now. He is already an established Abbott. And he is of an age to do some toe-to-toe with the other male power brokers on the scene.

The thought of Jack discovering another longlost child seems so stale. Keemo, Kyle, supposedly Hope. Really?

They will not reopen the storyline of Keemo that was halted in 1996 by Bill Bell. Yes Peter Bergman did not like the storyline not because of the actors but because he felt it was totally out of character for Jack Abbott he had always been a spoiled rich playboy now we find out he served in Vietnam for 2 yrs. and fathered a child. Finally Bell agreed and dropped the storyline but hey his daughter and Paul got a location shoot out of it in search for Keemo. lol

That’s really disappointing k/kay if what you’re saying is correct abt peter bregman not liking the storyline. Other day sudsers and y&r have had had the most ridiculous and outlandish storylines abt evil twins and plastic surgery and amnesia and other stupid arcs like step sons sleeping w/ their step mothers. Yet it’s completely unrealistic and out of character for a never before mentioned abbott son to be Vitenamese american?

Practically every past storyline is out of character on y&r and b&b and other day sudsers. But a storyline abt a Vietnamese american is unbelievable and out of character? Yet all the sleeping around between relatives is completely believable? There are seldom any storylines abt Asian american chars on any of these ancient day sudsers. It’s horrid if 1 of the only storylines abt Asian americans was shelved bec it was “not believable” especially when day sudsers are not exactly known for realism! This is exactly what turns people off from day sudsers. The fact that they’re really backwards when it comes to racial representation. That’s especially true for Asian american chars. What would the reaction from day sudser press and entertainment media have been if a y&r actor was vocal abt not wanting a storyline abt a gay abbott? What if a y&r actor was vocally against revisiting a storyline abt a gay abbott and called it silly and weird and out there?

If he’s a never heard of abbot then he could be an adopted racial minority. He could be portrayed by an African american actor. An asian american actor qwould be good too becday soaps need more racial diversity and the only way for racial minority actors to be weaved to the fabric of a show is to have them be adopted chars who are part of core families that are white. It’s the only way. This unheard of abbott should not be cast w/ a white actor. y&r should have keemo abbott return bec they really need Asian american chars on all day soap operas.

I would love to see an Asian actor in the part!

would if be sufficient to say I can not stand jill farren phelps daytime needs to run her ass out!

JFP has done nothing offensive as EP of this show. The problem has been Josh Griffith’s writing…or lack thereof. But that will be remedied soon.

What the hell? Are you joking?

Johnny are you on JFP’s payroll? Just kidding! Fellow soap fans please remember today is 9/11 and keep those who lost loved ones in your thoughts.

Brandon Barash, JP Lavossier, Kyle Lowder, and many others would be great!

Maybe there are too many issues between Prospect Park and ABC but I think JP would make an awesome Dylan Quartermaine on Gh. It could soften and humanize Tracy and he could be thrown into the mix in any number of stories…He is he perfect age that he could mesh well with the AJ/Liz/Nikolas/Brittany group or with the Maxie/Spinelli/Ellie/Sabrina group. He is a gifted performer who has chemistry everyone.

Id like JP to play Dylan…he could be paired with Sabrina once Robin returns…i pictured them together and believe theyd have wonderful chemistry! You should work in gh casting Johnny!

This is so frustrating! The answer is not another new character, when you have longtime cast members with nothing to do! The description sounds like a young Jack Abbott. Out of curiosity, what does everyone think about the Kyle recast?

Blake Hood’s portrayal was more playful– NuKyle is so brooding–but NuKyle does seem older and more mature than Blake’s Kyle. And when for the split second I thought Summer was going be Jack’s– NuKyle looks more like Summer’s brother than Noah, so I thought that was what they were going for. But now that is not the case, I am not sure why the recast was necessary in the first place. So I don’t hate NuKyle, but I’m thrill by him either, so if they ever wanted to recast again, i wouldn’t cry over it.

I almost stopped watching the show Blake was good!,still have no idea why they recast so much. This new kyle doesnt impress me or anyone I know who watches the show!

I can’t stand the actor that’s playing Kyle now.
IMO .. there’s nothing “Abbott” about him & nothing “Diane” either.

It’s a shame that they are looking for someone who is in his 30’s because Jack Wagner would make a fabulous Abbott man.

Peter Bergman and Wagner are very similar in acting styles and even have a believable family resemblance. It’ll never happen…lol….but it would work if it did.

They would be good together.

They would make an awesome pair…id even watch more!

This show is already top heavy with males in that age range…Adam, Nick, Dylan, Cain, Kevin, Tyler, etc. However all of them are deadly dull. Not to mention that according to the storylineNicholas has to be over 50. Now if Dylan is nikki’s son he has to be at least 55…which means Nikki has to logically be in her 70’s. And If Cain could have successfully passed as Philip then he has to be pushing 50 as well. Wow…did Maria Arena Bell ever do damage here! It is best if some stories are just NEVER mentioned again.

All this mess is due to SORASing, which is why most fans hate it.

I agree with you 100%, Mary SF – Maria Arena Bell did some irreversable damage to “Y & R” with her SORAS’ing of characters to the point that the ages and timelines have been screwed up royally!!!

For exanple – Kyle was a tween (about 12-13) when his mother Diane Jenkins was killed off in that horribly written storyline and he was sent away. Once that dumb plotline was “resolved”, Kyle came back to GC as a college graduate – WTF??

All I know is that the ratings are much stronger these days without MAB at the helm and I for one am glad she is gone!!!

I know, this age thing is crazy. I mean how old must Jill be? Victor? Look at Phyllis being Daniel’s mother! Daniel is definitely early 30’s, right? It is funny.

I agree. The kids age decades overnight & the Adults seem to be frozen in some sort of chryogenic chamber as they age slowly, halt ageing or go backwards & seem to be looking 40 when they are meant to be 50.

I think that this is a possible recast of the role of Billy Abbott. My thinking is that Y&R threw in some “red herrings” to throw us all off the track of the real casting, which in this case and in my opinion, could actually be for Billy Abbott, not a new Abbott. JFP wouldn’t be that stupid…………oh wait, yes she would! Oy!

I was thinking of a recast too for Billy Miller I think his contract is up again. Jeanne Coopers death and Michelle Stafford’s leaving has left two big salaries she can fill with boy toys who can’t act so it could be another Abbott man. The new Kyle is a FOJ so he is not going anywhere.

A recast for Billy Miller … hmmm.

If I’m not mistaken .. Nelson Branco had a blind item a while back that suggested Y&R would be losing one of it’s fan faves.

Don’t need another character.

Was reading recent SOD last night–article on Victoria Rowell, and I wouldnt mind her returning. Would certainly liven things up! Which is what the show needs. At least now with the Connor paternity reveal, things are getting interesting.

I agree about the Connor thing. I mean Dylan might be dull but no man could have been that stupid, it was painful to watch. I am glad they finally reveal the truth because it was silly that she lied about it in the first place.

Mo I think VR has been put on Sony’s radar if you read the article she supposedly was up for a role on DOOL then they dropped her. VR has not learned that if you want to stay in this business you can’t go out and make statements against the big boys. Her constant badgering about race has gotten old she is the Al Sharpton of daytime. Complete turnoff!

As a long time viewer of many soaps it is always disheartening when writers feel the need to “invent” new family members, when there are so many family members all ready created that are no longer on canvas or ever mentioned. However as Claire pointed out, if the writers do only make money on characters they created it could explain this annoying trend. And I do get — there is only so much you can do with one character over the span of twenty plus years that it is necessary at times to bring in a new one. And kudos that this time they are at least attempting to tie this new person to an existing family, unlike some other recent additions.

But at this point the writing and story line have to be beyond wonderful for fans who have been long disenchanted by this show to return. I think for a long time it has been the writing that has taken this show for their glory days to these not so great days. I’d be happy when I get really good stories, otherwise new character, old character, it doesn’t matter, if the story is blah, the show will be too.

I hope that Y & R keeps “Murphy” in the story line … we older folks need characters in our age bracket too!

So do I, Dottie.

Even if he only shows up a couple of times a year (Christmas being one of those times) it would be great to see him.

I was thinking it would be great for them to keep him around, but I was also thinking today when he was left the summer house in Katherine’s will that he’ll be moving there. 🙁

It is doubtful– they hardly used the character when Katherine was alive and they were married, now that she is deceased it is unlikely. He must have signed some kind of pre-nup to only inherit a summer house, but it seems like his days are number on the show. I know it is called the Young and the Restless, but Jeanne’s portrayal showed older folks can be young at heart and Murphy could have been kept and been a great addition to the cast, but given JFP is in charge and don’t see that happening.

We really don’t need another new character at all…even if it is an “Abbott”. How about bringing back EXISTING Abbotts?

And no offense to anyone, but we also don’t want anymore ABC actors on the show. How about an unknown? That’s my preference.

Who is this “we” you are speaking for? Lol. Some of the best talent on this show is from ABC originally…the actors who play Chloe, Chelsea, Jack, Billy, Dylan, and others. If YOU do not like ABC actors (which is a strange and irrationally sweeping generalization ) then say YOU don’t….but please don’t presume to speak for all viewers. A good actor is a good actor period.

Bravo!

So let me start again.

A LOT of longtime YR viewers don’t want the show turned further in GH 2.0.

A LOT of us don’t want more FOJ to inhabit our show. Dylan has not been welcomed by a lot of the fans. Perfect example. Thanks.

She should look for talent elsewhere.

I would like to make a suggestion. Why not let Jill Farren Phelps leave Y&R and create a brand new Soap and hire all the former General Hospital cast she wants. We do not need Young and Restless to turn into another GH, One life to live, or All My Children. The Young and Restless has always been a classic, stand alone soap based on family, rich powerful business moguls, romance, drama, humor, cliff hangers, and the most beautiful, talented cast on daytime t.v. We do not need any more young, good looking men. Just continue to write good story lines for Adam, Nick, Billy, Dylan, Cane, Kevin, and Tyler. You do not need anymore good looking, talented older men. She just needs to hire a good writing staff that knows the history of Y&R and write good story lines for Jack, Victor, Neal. She needs to fix Sharon Case and bring Phyllis back and write interesting, drama stories for Sharon, Phyllis, Chelsea, Avery, Summer, Noah, and Jill and Nicki, and Victoria. So much potential for good story telling with the cast she has. All these talented people deserve to be in storylines and share time on the screen. A good writing team know how this is done. That is why it is called an ensemble cast.
I have to trufuly say the long drawn out storyline regarding Adam, Chelsea and Dylan has really been must see tv for the last couple of days. Michael Muhney and Melisa Clair Egen are two beautiful talented actors and deserve an Emmy win next year. They work so good together. I had been disappointed in Dylan since he came on the show, but when Chelsea let him know he is not the father, he brought me to tears. Adam (played by Michael Muhney) has always brought me from a smile to a tear in a heartbeat. He is such a good actor. He really is my favorite on the show and Billy Miller is my second favorite. I really enjoyed the tribute to Jeanne Cooper. Some of the writing has been very good and true to character and history. Not all bad. Very entertaining. Why does she feel the need to keep bringing on new characters? They are not needed in my opinion. But we fans have very little if any say in the show. I am a true fan and I will not give up on it. I will watch it as long and I am able.

I agree with you about JFP. She needs to go now! I have been watching or DVRing this show since 1986 and it was good before JFP came in and trashed it with her boy toys and blase story lines. omg, and the storyline with Sharon is absolutely ridiculous! just say she is off her meds or that she has a tumor making her the way she is that can be removed but the story is ridiculous!!! I also thought they would have a growing attraction betw Summer and Noah since they are not really sibs anymore forcing Sharon to tell the truth that she fudged the paternity test and that they are really sibs. The storyline with Hilary and Mason and Neil is boring me to tears! They really need to give storylines to the veterans who have made this show what it is! Not looking to watch GH recycled!

“Handsome, driven and sexy” as opposed to all of the ugly, lazy and repulsive men on soaps. Why don’t they tell the truth– they’re looking for a guy who looks good with his shirt off, no acting experience necessary?

i want dina abbott jacks mom to come back. i want marla adams back as dina. if she is not available . recast her with marj dusay ex alex gl. she would be really good. she is a wonderful actress.

I’m a Capiyol fan too. Either of the two grande dames you memtioned would be wonderful to watch again.

New characters help drive soaps and keep them fresh and updated. BUT you gotta do it right. Y&R hasn’t been able to properly introduce any interesting new characters since perhaps Kevin Fisher. Legacy characters have been brought on and destroyed or killed off: Colleen, Chance, Ronan, Heather, Chloe, Abby, Kyle, Noah, you name it! Summer is somewhat interesting, but isn’t it jarring to anyone that Cassie has been dead for 8 years, but Summer is 18? Plus all of these new faces with only contrived ties to the canvas have me snoozing! Face it, fellow classic Y&R lovers, this show has been a train wreck since LML took over in 2005 and it’s steadily gotten worse since. And it’s so sad, because the formula is so freaking easy! I realize the economics and logistics are difficult, but Bill Bell’s formula was simple classic character-driven melodrama punctuated by huge life-changing events that further created drama and story for generations. I’ve, in my own mind, created story arcs in my head that last a year and beyond and that use the core cast we know and love while mining 40 years of history. It can be done. Get the right writers who know, understand and LOVE/RESPECT the show, and imagine what could happen. JFP, stop throwing darts aimlessly at the board and find the right team to creatively guide this show or be gone and let someone who can and cares take your place. I volunteer, but I don’t have the connections.

Oh Jared– you took the words right out of my heart. Unfortunately the powers that be don’t seem to be able to put two and two together and realized what made this show great in the first place. It would be wonderful if they could find a creative team that didn’t just have experience in soaps, but actually were a fan of the soap they were writing for
A team that understands how much time and love fans have invested in a show– and write for us, instead of for ratings. If they wrote respecting the viewer we will reward them with our eyeballs, but when you make it clear you more interested in a number on a balance sheet than us– you get the result you pay for.

Agreed. But look at what Phelps did when she took over…she got rid of about 6-7 characters (yes some needed to go) and currently we have about 10 new or recast characters currently clogging the show.

She doesn’t know what she’s doing with the beloved YR.

JFP has no clue what she’s doing, and I hate that she’s being kept at the helm of a show she knows nothing about.

Those 6 actors who got fired were Genie Francis, Tristan Rogers, Stephen Nichols, Marcy Rylan, Debbi Morgan and Jennifer Landon. I liked each and every one of these characters (except Harmony Hamilton), and the each had story potential. Instead of giving Heather a real, meaty storyline, with a new and VERY talented actress who can deliver great performances, they fired her after only five months. Instead of exploring another Tucker story, he was let go. Genie Francis and Tristan Rogers were great together as Genevieve and Colin, lots of chemistry and great acting talent. But, alas, they were fired, too, and swept back up by GH.

And now, we have Tyler, Leslie, Hillary, Mason, Dylan and others who are beyond boring and needless on the show. Apparently, Dylan’s story is supposed to pick up, but everyone else is awful. And what’s with the Kyle recast? Hartley Sawyer is a horrible actor; this is probably one of, if not THE, worst recast is Y&R history. Blake Hood was much better as Kyle.

As for “Andrew Abbott”, I hope whoever they hire (possible Jason Cook aka Matt from GH?) livens up the show more. And, please, give Noah a REAL story already. Sometimes Noah has had lines where he’s like “I want to get up and go do something with my life, I want something important to do,” and I feel like that’s a bit of Robert Adamson’s displeasure coming out with his lack of story for the past year.

Why not expand the family of Hope Adams (Newman)? Why not have a long-lost cousin? It would make sense for Adam to have more family on his side rather than the Newmans.

Afterall, Nikki is possibly getting a long lost son. This is ridiculous.

Not surprised by the reaction. Anyway, whomever it is I hope he’s not paired with that silly and ridiculous sharon or that annoying chelsea.

I’m watching for 2 story lines; the play of Katherine’s will (namely what happens to Jill), and the story of Nikki’s baby. I’m happy to see some of the old, vulnerable Nikki return; not the boring country club snob she’s been for many years. I always did love the chemistry between Nikki and Paul. Yes, I’m old enough to remember Nikki’s days with the cult. I can’t imagine how another Abbott would fit unless John had an affair after the births of the other 3 (possibly to get back at Dina for her affair that resulted in Ashley?) I don’t know, I just know the show really isn’t the same.

Not trying to spoil things, but because of my line of work requies me to investigate things. So I am guessing, Andrew Abbott is Nikki Newson’s son who she had when she was at the commune. Am I right? Who knows…I can’t wait to see how his role plays out. I love me some Y&R !!!!!

Yes, there are already too many newbies on the show, but at least “Andrew” is part of the Abbott clan, so there is at least a tie to a core family. I hope that someone like Jason Cook (ex-Matt, GH) or Jon-Paul Lavoisier (ex-Rex, OLTL) gets the part. They can both act, and I think they’d have great scenes with Peter Bergman and Billy Miller.

I hope hes gay . Where are the gay people on this soap ? These new people running this show sbould be fired. Its soooooo boring.

Christel Khalil Reveals She Almost Quit Acting After ‘That’s So Raven’ Audition, But Then Came ‘The Young and the Restless’

Published

The Young and the Restless fan favorite, Christel Khalil (Lily Winters) is the special guest on this week’s edition of Soapy Hosted by Rebecca Budig and Greg Rikaart which dropped today on Tuesday, June 23rd.

During the interview with Rebecca and Greg, Khalil who had played Lily Winters on-screen since August of 2002, nearly 24 years with the CBS soap, shared how early on her teenage acting career, she was ready to call it quits in show business, after a heartbreaking audition for the lead of a new Disney Channel sitcom, which later turned out to be the hit seres, That’s So Raven, starring Raven-Symoné which ran for four seasons from 2003-2007.

Christel recalled what happened. “I was 14 and I had always auditioned for all these Disney projects. So I auditioned for That’s So Raven, it was between me and Raven-Symoné and it was called at the time Absolutely Psychic,” explained Khalil. “The character was this girl who had psychic ability, but then when Raven got the role, they named the title of the show after her.”

HOW A BROTHERLY TALK CHANGED THE COURSE OF CHRISTEL’S CAREER

Reliving the disappointment to Greg and Rebecca, Christel explained, “I lost that part and I was just so devastated, because for the network call there were 20 people in the room watching me, and I just have always had such performance anxiety. I just completely bombed the audition and it was terrible. So, I was just devastated. I was actually going to quit acting and then I got the final call for The Young and The Restless and I wasn’t going to go.”

It was Khalil’s brother, who actually got her to reconsider, and if he hadn’t, we would not have our Lily Winters in Genoa City! Christel recounted, “I was like, ‘You know what? I’m done. I don’t want to do this anymore. I’m just going to hang out with my friends.’ I was just devastated. My brother, who is seven years older than me, and he had quit acting at the same age that I was at that time. He said to me, ‘I promise you, I actually really regret quitting. Just go on this audition and if you don’t get it, you can quit.'”

Christel’s screen-test for the role of Lily was actually with the late, great, Kristoff St. John who would play her father Neil (Later it was revealed to Lily, that Neil’s brother, Malcolm Winters was her bio-dad).

Photo: CBS

ACTING WAS EASY WITH THE LATE KRISTOFF ST. JOHN

“So, I went (to test for Lily) and I remember the screen-test was with Kristoff St. John. It was just so easy to act with him because he’s just so there. I remember just being on set, and that was my first time there for a screen-test where you were actually on set. I had never experienced that before. It was my first time being with an actor and  having makeup done, which just helps you really be able to do your best work.”

Recalling the screen-test with the St. John, Khalil, “It was where I had to be emotional ( in the scene) and I always had issues being emotional at auditions. But I was there with him, it just came, and it happened. It was natural and I felt so good and it was amazing. It stands out in my mind a lot.”

You can check out the full Soapy conversation with Christel Khalil where she also discusses juggling motherhood, marital life, and the demands of soap operas.

Fan can listen to weekly episodes of Soapy on Audacy or wherever podcasts are available, and can watch full video episodes weekly on the CBS =Brand YouTube Channel. Whether a lifelong fan or discovering the genre for the first time, SOAPY offers a fresh, fun behind-the-scenes look at the stories – and storytellers – that define daytime drama.

Now let us know, over the years what had been your favorite Lily Winters story on Y&R as played by Christel Khalil? What did you think of of Christell’s recollection where she was up for the lead of “That’s So Raven” as a teenager, before it was even titled that? Let us know via the comment section.

Deidre Hall Marks 50 Years as ‘Days of Our Lives’ Dr. Marlena Evans

Published

on

By

If you have ever tuned-in to the soap opera genre over the last 50 years, and witnessed some of the greatest romances, drama, classic and outlandish storylines of all-time, you would have seen Deidre Hall smack dab in the middle of it as longtime Salem heroine, Dr. Marlena Evans.

It was 50 years on this date, June 21, 1976 that Hall first appeared on DAYS on NBC which was its home for 57 years before it moved to its current streaming platform on Peacock in September of 2022.

In Hall’s first episode she was introduced as a psychiatrist treating Mickey Horton (John Clarke) at Bayview Sanitarium after he suffered a complete mental breakdown. Mickey learned that his brother Bill Horton (Edward Mallory) was the biological son of Mike Horton (Wesley Eure) with his wife Laura (Susan Flannery) and that he had been lied to for years and years. From that moment on, the rest is television and soap opera history. Days of Our Lives put Hall front and center.

Photo: NBC

There were so many heartbreaking and shocking story twists involving the beloved Marlena. One of the first was the historic crib death of baby DJ (Don Jr.) in 1980, Marlena’s infant son with Don Craig (Jed Allan). The story had never been told on daytime television and Hall’s performances received accolades from TV critics to fans when Deidre received thousands of letters from grieving mothers who had gone through the same thing in their own lives.

DAYS also brought Deidre’s twin sister, Andrea Hall Lovell to the show as her on-screen sister Samantha, who had a grudge and even locked Marlena up in a sanitarium and took her place! Fast-forward and in 1982, DAYS launched the Salem Strangler story where everyone believed Marlena was his next victim, only it turned out to be Samatha. Jake Kositchek (played by Jack Coleman) was revealed to be the actual serial killer.

Later, Deidre would assume the role of Marlena’s look-alike, Hattie Adams in 2004, once played by her sister, Andrea. Over the years, Hattie has come back to Salem and caused trouble giving Hall a chance to play a different type of character, then the always upstanding Marlena.

THE LOVES OF MARLENA

Deidre Hall struck gold with all her leading men: from the late Jed Allan, to Wayne Northrop as Roman Brady, and of course, her enduring love story with the late John Black played by the iconic Drake Hogestyn. In fact, Marlena’s 1986 wedding to John (who was believed to be Roman at the time) remains a favorite of fans to this day.

TOP MARLENA STORYLINES OF ALL-TIME

While the list is long, here are several that were some of the memorable during Deidre’s five decades in Salem!

The Possession (1994- 1995)
Considered one of the most ambiguous, outlandish and unforgettable story arcs in soap opera history, then Days of Our Lives head writer, James Reilly went there! Marlena was possessed by the devil! That included; the demonic eyes, hissing at father John (Black) the priest, morphing into creatures, and the classic levitating in her bed! It became a cultural phenomenon and cemented Deidre Hall’s status as a daytime television legend. Just ask Ryan Gosling!

The Affair with John Black (1993)
John and Marlena’s forbidden love could not be denied and they had passionate affair, while she was still married to the real Roman. Problem was her daughter, Sami (Alison Sweeney) caught her mother having sex with John on a desk that changed Sami forever.

The Salem Stalker Mystery (2003-2004)
In a shocker, Marlena was revealed to be a serial killer who bumped off several Salem favorites residents who were all alive on the island of Melaswen (spelled “New Salem” backward). Turns out, she was manipulated and gaslighted by Andre DiMera (Thaao Penghlis) to do the “killings” and had no memory of her actions.

The Pier Scene (1991)
This remains Michael Fairman TV’s all-time favorite Deidre Hall moment, which featured some of the best acting in the storied careers of both Hall and Drake Hogestyn.

In the story, a presumed-dead Marlena returns after four years. One foggy night on the pier, John is alone, and Marlena steps out of the fog to reveal herself, and is reunited with the love of her life. You can watch it any year, any decade, and in any moment, and it will have you reaching for the hankies again and again. (best music score fo a soap scene of all-time too!)

Kristen’s Secret Room Reveal (1997)
Marlena was caught in Kristen Blake’s (Eileen Davidson) elaborate web of lies, when she was held hostage in a secret wine cellar/room until John managed to track her down, leading to an iconic on-screen reunion. The classic catfight between Hall and Eileen Davidson was one for the ages.

It should be noted that Maison Blanche, Queen of the Night, Possession, Aremid and Lady in a Cage were all a part of classic DAYS storyline and all featured Hall at the epicenter of it from 1993-1996.

THE RECENT YEARS OF MARLENA

In recent years, DAYS brought back the possession 2.0 storyline under then head writer Ron Carlivati in 2021 where the devil leapt back in Marlena after taking advantage of a frail Doug Williams (the late Bill Hayes)

In 2025, viewers watched the end of the love story of John and Marlena, as John succumbed to injuries sustained in an explosion saving a vial of medication needed to bring Bo (Peter Reckell) back to life. Marlena has been a widow on-screen since June of 2025 as Hall as portrayed the good doctor struggling with her grief and to move on with her life since his death.

One story that never goes away is Stefano DiMera’s (the late Joe Mascolo) obsession with Marlena, his “Queen of the Night.” Even in death, Stefano is toying with her from the great beyond with the mysterious chess set and the missing “pawn,” that he had gifted John and Marlena in his will. The mystery is currently unfolding on all-new episodes of Days of Our Lives.

Tune-in to Days of our Lives on the Monday, June 22 episode as Marlena looks back at her 50 years in Salem.
