In a great new interview and pictorial in Frontiers In LA Magazine, and their companion website, The Young and the Restless’ openly gay actor Thom Bierdz (Phillip) talks about dating, cosmetic surgery, his painting career, and why there are not more actors who are out in daytime.

Here is what Bierdz had to say about the daytime dilemma: “The gay actors I know have not explained this to me personally, so I am only guessing that they are afraid of losing their acting careers. When I began acting I was told by my reps to “stay in the closet” as it could hurt my career. So I did, and the pain of that secret kept me from enjoying the very success I was beginning to have. I left The Young and the Restless after three years. Fast forward two decades. After coming out I had a unique opportunity in 2009 to play the same part I did 20 years ago on Y&R, Phillip Chancellor III, who was straight. And now all these years later, as in my own life, the writers have brilliantly written Phillip as gay, and as a son, brother, father, with an ex-wife he adores. My character on the soap has been loved since he was born in the ’70s, and now viewers—even those who think they don’t know any gay people—know Phillip is gay and that the actor playing him is also gay; so they have to/get to experience Phillip as a multidimensional gay man who is as worthy of love as the other legacy characters on daytime.”

Check out the rest of Bierdz interview and let us know your thoughts on his comments.

OK! What could have been a great storyline was thrown under the bus! This is why I say Siister Soap B&B leave the gay storylines alone you do not have the writer or actors for this! Please hire me to straighten out this mess you call Daytime ! History, knowing your characters not rewriting in the middle to change things! Not hiring actors to play long time charcters who are 15 years younger than they should be. Enough! You insult the viewers!
