41st Annual Daytime Emmy Nominations Announced!

Courtesy/FOX

Courtesy/FOX

Nominations were announced this morning by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) for this year’s 41st Annual Daytime Emmys! Good Morning America made the announcement of some of the major categories.

However for soap fans, it was The Young and the Restless who scored the most nominations of all shows with 26 followed by The Bold and the Beautiful with 18,  and in a shocker, ABC’s General Hospital failed to garner nominations in the Outstanding Drama Series, Writing and Directing categories. However, Prospect Park’s reboot of One Life to Live made history becoming the first online soap opera to land a nomination in the Outstanding Drama Series category! CBS was the network with the most Emmy tally when all the nominations were said and done with 61!

The ceremonies for the 41st annual Daytime Emmys will be held on June 22nd at the Beverly Hilton, while the Creative Arts awards will be handed out on June 2oth.  NATAS has also said that if the Daytime Emmys cannot lock in a television broadcaster, it will stream the ceremonies online.  Here now are the nominees in all of the Daytime Drama categories.  Congratulations to all!

As a GH fan I’m not happy. the 50th year was exceptional

Barbara Weaver
Barbara Weaver

This has to be an error. General hospital show be on there.

Kathie Simmons
Kathie Simmons

I have to say that GH should not be on there and I am happy they are not. there is nothing on GH thats makes sense nor do they ever end a s/l, mosy everything is recycle and its gross! We have no true couple to cheer for because they have no chemistry. Its people thrown together because RC/FV think they are hot, and frankly I don’t hink they know to much about man and woman chemistry appeal.GH have good actors/actresses, but they have actresses dumby down for men, and thats not what women are about today. There is no action with actresses we know can do action, to me is just the mess that was once OLTL, under a new name GH!

ginger
ginger

They seem to be punishing GH’s excellent team of Frank Valenti and Ron Carlavati for turning this stinker of a show 360 degrees around. GH is the only soap I care about and will continue to be – IMO Y&R is a tired old, old, granny soap that moves with the pace of a turtle. How man times will that old goat marry his ex wife? Talk about recycled stories. And Steve Burton? What a farce – he’s nothing but a so-so actor – always has been always will be. GH is superbly written, staged, paced, the stories are interesting and humor abounds! Even my brother is hooked and it’s not for any reason but the writing. I don’t understand why people bash GH – it’s far superior to any soap on the air today. This just proves how ridiculous these awards are – how much do you want to bet they will be aired by CBS? For those who bash GH – please just stop watching – ABC is looking for reasons to get rid of it and YOU AREN’T HELPING THE CAUSE OF SOAPS AT ALL.

JKH
JKH

You nominate Steve Burton over Michael Muhney? Burton did better acting saying nothing on GH. Wow some of the actors/actresses nominated are some of the worst actors on soaps. The nominating process leaves a lot to be desired.

Kim Huck

Monica Junge

Hey Kim. But I don’t think she’s awful though. But there are better.

What joke, GH was excellent in its 50th year!

harry

Yes it was exceptional. Exceptionally, bad.

Keith

I just cannot believe General Hospital was NOT nominated for Best Show and Best Writing! It is totally ridiculous! GH is 10 times better than Y&R and I used to be a Y&R fan. These omissions make no sense! They are going to nominate OLTL and not GH???

Elizabeth
Elizabeth

Can’t say whether or not GH is better than Y&R but under this EP/HW it is a sad parody of what it used to be. The show used to be iconic (thus the multiple Emmys year after year) and now it should be shown on Saturday mornings and replayed plot point by plot point in morse code. No character development, just one outrageous reveal after the next, until we are reduced to watching enemies have hate sex on top of the crypt of a person they just killed. The show deserved to be left out, period.

CHH
CHH

There is no soap on television today that even can compare to GH. The writing, directing and actors are superb. Y&R & B&B are no longer viewable they are SO bad. I am just gobsmacked at some of the choices . Is the nominating committee watching the same TV because I just don’t get it.

Linda
Linda

I only watch GH. The others are just stupid. I enjoy the craziness of the new Luke and Sabrina is a very good addition. None of the other shows hold a candle to GH. I smell politics in this, CBS is hosting the award show, funny how that works.

Slam! Cartini.

Well, Ron Cartini has been served.

Karen
Karen

I can’t believe GH is not up for best drama or best writing. This totally sucks

GH50
GH50

Believe it. GH is terribly written and produced. There is no depth or emotion to the writing. It is all plot and the plots have more holes than swiss cheese and characters are dumbed to advance these terrible plots. The stories are all predictable and recycled baby switches, love triangles and cartoon villains running wild. Vets are pushed to the back and only trotted out on occasion to prop newbies. New character after new character introduced with no way or reason to want to connect to them and this need to put former OLTL actors front and center when their characters are terrible and their performances are lacking. And character after character written OOC to accomodate the stories and new characters.

Sean Kanan was right. Relish, Panic attacks,DVD’s, BLT’s, obnoxious children acting like adults, sophomoric jokes that amuse the writers, but no one else.

The writing is terrible and so is the production. The pacing and continuity are lacking and totally unprofessional. Cartini deserve this slap in the face. Their product is unwatchable. They don’t listen to the fans, maybe this will be a wake up call for ABC.

jimh(leave it to beaver)
jimh(leave it to beaver)

I agree…GH has good ideas but then they poorly write them…the death of A.J. was the worse thing to happen on this show!!!

Christi
Christi

Very well said!!! The writers and producers of GH need to watch old GH at it’s best and takes notes and learn.. Sometimes I feel like they write as if they have never even really watched old GH, but maybe just read some recaps.. they write as if the didn’t or don’t even like old GH.. if that is the case, they are at the wrong show.

RichCD
RichCD

I hate to admit it, but you are right. GH is almost unwatchable right now. Cartini seemed to be on the right track for awhile, but since the OLTL character switches, it has gradually gone down hill. GH has traded heart and soul for campy ‘a-ha’ moments. Too bad.

harry
harry

Yes, GH50. Maybe this will be a wake up call and ABC will finally take some action and hire a reputable head writer who can do some serious damage control. I still believe this train wreck of a show can be saved but not under the tenure ship of the very arrogant and stubborn Ron Cartini.

Kathie Simmons
Kathie Simmons

ITA with you!You can only moke screen for a while. They came in and changed things an brought over 3 from OLTL and inserted them and make things that didn’t make sense. GH makes no sense, they have no s/l and once you get a answer to one question, thats followed by another. Why did they hired 2 people from a canceled soap to write for GH.Its not working and it haven’t worked. They make promised to actors and don’t keep them because ome of them think of something else dumb to do.They have actress on there they should never be fron burner and have nothing but hev triangles all the time. They already have Jerry Springer on, don’t need anyhmore of that.As for good ideals they have not.The problem is these 2 made a big mistake when they first too over GH, and they have fallen back into that OLTL mess. The anticipations of storylines are always better than the actual event.

Kaleesi
Kaleesi

Could it be the destruction of the Qs once again in favour of the mob hour? I think so.

KM
KM

I couldn’t agree more GH50. I think GH’s relatively small ratings bump had more to do with ABC axing 2/3 of their lineup than it did with Cartini’s brilliance. Unfortunately they seemed to believe their own press and think they could afford to thumb their noses at the audience with smoke and mirrors stunt returns that went nowhere as well as juvenile camp that seemed more geared toward entertaining themselves than the fans. I hope this snub provides a much needed reality check for them and ABC.

Keith
Keith

GH has risen to be the best soap on TV. Everyday something major happens and you want to tune in the next day. It should have been nominated for Best Show and Best Writing.

Trisha
Trisha

I agree. The second it was announced that OLTL characters were coming to GH, many of us knew that the GH we watched for so long would be disappearing before our eyes. Now, we are living that nightmare. TPTB ignored every criticism and forged on with disrespect and ignorance as to what was the right thing to do FOR GH. Instead they only did FOR THEMSELVES. It’s no wonder GH did not get nominated..it is NOT GH anymore and that is the REAL TRAVESTY.

curry-girl
curry-girl

Agreed

Timmm
Timmm

Good points Karen. I just think that GH making it to 50 and seeing some of our beloved characters were enough to gander a nom. But, having said that, even when they had decent stories, they seemed to been written by Emma and Spencer!

aria
aria

i love GH always will no matter what, but i hope this is a good blow to RC and FV that while they do and are capable of producing a great show, more often then not the show is all scattered and overbloated. fans have place their concerns and have been ignore. the biggest complain was the show getting to cartoonish, but RC and his beg ego kept ignoring a large part of their audience. RC is the head writer, but he can’t write to just please himself, he got to balance the show and listen to the fans, cut the cartoon crap. on anoter note, i also feel like theres GH envy, although they haven’t beaten Yr bb in the ratings, they do get more press, plus also wontdering what show did they submit for emmy consideration? RC and FV have never been good at selecting shows, look at all the years they were on oltl and only won once, you can say all the crap you want about JFP but she at least knows how to submit shows that “win”. one thing for sure though, Us GH fans always have to take up the ass because the big shots listen when its to late…

W. R.
W. R.

I agree that possibly the biggest problem with GH right now is RC’s arrogance. I have seen some of his responses on twitter and they show a marked disrespect for the audience and their opinions. The GH audience has been with the show a lot longer than he has and if they have concerns they should be taken seriously, not insulted and discounted. Even if they are critical and rude it’s not good form for him to respond the way he does. However my main issue with the current GH is the implausibility of the story lines. The most recent example is Sabrina giving birth on the side of the road to an 18 week premature baby. There was no real urgency in getting help for this baby. A baby that premature would not be able to breath on it’s own. On rare occasions a baby that premature would survive, but not without heroic efforts. When they finally got to the hospital there was more concern for the mother than for the baby. Sabrina was rushed into the ER and Patrick and Epiphany calmly rode up to the NICU(?) in the elevator discussing the situation as Patrick held a scrunched up blanket to his chest. Some effort should be made to make real situations at least appear real but the writers don’t even appear to try. I remember when the writers on soaps did research to make sure they made situations as realistic as possible. God forbid that much effort should be exerted today.

JKH
JKH

Y&R and B&B are horrible horrible soaps. I can’t even watch anymore and I used to watch faithfully. General Hospital is the only watchable soap on TV although they need to reign in the evil Luke Spencer story line everything else is great.

Michael Easton,Roger Howarth and Kristen Alderson have been GH for over 2 years now and you and other people may not like that they are on GH but others may like that they are on GH.Plus i’m wondering people would be disliking them if they had come from another soap besides OLTL.

Rosanna
Rosanna

speak for your self, the OLTL 3 are NOT going anywhere, only reason OLTL even got a nod is to appease the fans, give me a break!!!

marjorie manford
marjorie manford

The OLTL 3 have been shoved down our throats..Kiki has no chemistry with Michael. Seeing Luke trying to rape her is disgusting. Silas has no Chemistry with Sam. The Nina story is god awful. RC whitewashed all of Franco’s crimes. One minute Franco is a Q the next Scotty’s and Heather’s son .I loved these actors on OLTL not on GH. With RC and FV GH is Doomed. I really had high hopes for GH when RC and FV took over.

GH has really gone downhill in the quality since Ron & Frank took over hasn’t it.

Dori Weiler
Dori Weiler

Yes it has. They have new actors on that has put down GH also. If OLTL is being nominated and is going to maybe come back on… let those oltl actors leave GH and go to their own show. It has gone down more since they have come over.

Timmm
Timmm

Yes but you have to give them credit for keeping the show on TV.

andrew hass
andrew hass

Michael Easton,Roger Howarth and Kristen Alderson have been on GH for over 2 years now.So i don’t consider them OLTL actors anymore.Yeah GH didn’t get nominations this year but GH may not care that much.Awards are great for the actors because it’s a recognition of their good work for the year but maybe for the show overall it’s how many people tune into watch GH.Fans don’t tune in to watch soaps because of who won awards but because of the characters and stories.

Rosanna
Rosanna

OLTL is NEVER EVER COMING BACK….did I say NEVER?? The show is not down hill and if it is why are you still watching???? oh that`s right because you like to complain.

rhonda thompson

gh used to be the home of super couples like luke and larura and brenda and sonny there is no good couples on gh any more

Rosanne
Rosanne

I am not surprised that GH didnt get any nominations in the best directing, writing.. becasue honestly that soap.. which is my fav of all time.. is all over the place.. stories are dropped for months and revisited after no one cares.. and then there are stories that drag out for months and months.. we see actors like once a month if that.. My opinion is that without the continuity of a story I would say they didnt deserve the nominations.

louisa

Totally agree with you. I am so happy for One Life to Live though.

I agree ! This is my favorite show and there are a lot of the actresses and actors that don’t get the air time they deserve. I know you need to bring on new characters at times but they do it too often, The stories are all over the place. I miss the old days!!!

GH is the best soap on tv. Maurice is one of the best actors and I can’t believe he wasn’t nominated. This is a rip off. I am so disappointed. Everyone on GH is good.

Dori Weiler
Dori Weiler

Maurice is the best. Carly should be up too for actress because of what she went thru when Heather kidnapped her.

andrew hass
andrew hass

Heather kidnapping Carly happened this year and those scenes could get Laura Wright a nomination next year.

Timmm
Timmm

I dont like Carly but your right, she did a heck of a job with being kidnapped. Maybe she didnt submit a reel? I read where they had to twist Jane Elliot’s arm to submit a scene for her nom.

harry
harry

MB did not submit a tape because I think he is unhappy with the drivel he has had to play. He did not deserve a nomination. Laura Wright is either phoning it in lately, or trying to compensate by over acting so it is fair she wasn’t nominated wither. The actress who was really over looked here was Finola Hughes who gave an emotionally wrought and real performance as a mother reuniting with her presumed dead daughter.

This is a travesty beyond epic proportions! How could general hospital not be nominated for best show, writing or directing.I remember in 1985 the show was nominated for best show but failed to have one acting nomination. The new nominating system is not working. The other shows should agree to let general hospital submit episodes for direction, writing and show so they can compete with each other fairly.Ted corday, bill bell and jill philips need to come forward and in solidarity ask the academy to allow gh to be nominated in each category.Otherwise, this is a waste of time.Finola hughes ignored, kimberly mccoulough ignored. This is all a joke! I am absolutely disgusted.

4everDAYS

Hi john, Ted Corday can’t come forward, but his son can. Ken Corday is executive producer of Days of our Lives. May Ted and Betty Corday R.I.P.

Elizabeth
Elizabeth

Seriously? Why would any of the other EP’s do that? GH didn’t deserve the nomination by many, many viewers opinions in addition to the selection committee… why cheapen the nomination process with such an amatuerish “do-over” mentality? If TPTB at GH want to compete to win an emmy for their production then let them improve the show and actually earn that chance.

Erica
Erica

This is a piece of crap. KMc should have been nom, so should have Kelly Monaco and finola. Plus GH should have more noms. And should have been up for outstanding drama series. This is horrible. There is like no GH. Thanks a lot. My night will be ruined thanks to this.

It’s all politics!! The have their favorites and that’s it. Not taking away from people on other shows there is a lot of great acting out there but you can’t say there isn’t politics involved. Some win repeatedly and some are nominated year after year and like Susan Lucci finally win it!
I stopped watching it! I hope our GH people win. I also was a fan of AMC and OLTL, I’d root for them also!

harry

This is the final wake up call for GH. An overwhelming fan base has been unhappy with the horrible campy writing which is very badly paced for well over a year. It is time for Ron to stop sailing on that river of denial. His arrogance has been blinding him to the truth for quite some time no

k/kay

@Scott I am giving her credit she cleaned house with nominations she knows how to get emmys she is still using veterans on Y&R she did not clean house like she normally has done in the past the people who were fired when she first came on were not veterans. So please understand I am not on her back anymore. Of the last three that went MS, MM & BM only MS was a 15 year veteran. Jeanne Cooper passed away she was not to blame for that. Maybe just maybe she learned her lesson. Peace!!!!

Michael (not Fairman)
Michael (not Fairman)

A pretty pointed smackdown of ABC, by the industry, or at least NATAS, in the Prospect Park versus ABC conflict. Even with its faults–and there were plenty–GH didn’t deserve a best writing or best show nomination any less than Y&R or B&B (can’t judge in regard to Days because I have barely watched it in the last year or so), and I think the nomination of OLTL for best show clinches it: somebody was out to send a message.

It’s one of the things I generally hate about these awards (Emmys, Grammys, Oscars): they’re political, so I can’t really take the results as seriously as I’d like to. I’m always happy when actors/actresses/writers/shows I admire win, but it detracts from the glory of winning when I know the process is tainted from the get-go. (And I’m talking about something separate from the fact that the process is procedurally problematic–you have people winning/losing based on a few shows out of a year of work. There’s that, and I hate that part too, but it’s also tainted by the introduction of political considerations.)

Lori Giannuzzi
Lori Giannuzzi

yes, I agree! Thank you!! I still like the actress or actor whether they win or lose. Just don’t like the award shows.

I agree that Emmys might be political. If GH was not nominated for best show because the judges didn’t think it was that’s fine but they shouldn’t let personal views come into the decision.Just like the fans the judges may have their favorites. However maybe the best revenge GH can get is to prove they are the best show around despite not been nominated and get everyone to work together.

James Scott, most definitely. Sad when you see Bryan Craig (nuMorgan) and Kristen Alderson (Kiki) from General Hospital being nominated and not James Scott!

You can correct me if I am wrong but I think James Scott has been vocal about how he feels about the emmy process and as I totally agree with him they do not like that. Thin skinned folks up there!

yeah….

Yikes… can you imagine that…..

shiver… in the same sentence…. Bryan Craig, Kristen Alderson, James Scott, and Alison Sweeney

woah! why! WRONG!

I’m so with you… I don’t get the appeal of dull Kiki… and so over the bereft Heather Tom

k/kay

Oh thank you Patrick someone else agreeing with me about HT so been there done that! I refuse to believe 3 years in a row she is better then the others. I will stand firmly behind this statement you must have a big ego if you can not take a rest and not submit after winning three years in a row one supporting and two lead. I have not seen ED & AZ’s work but please by all that is holy can one of those gals win.

Who is Daniel Polo?

Can’t believe Y&R got so many noms considering it’s probably the worst soap on the air in terms of story, but I guess these are acting and the actors are doing well with the story they’ve been given.

Why only four best actress noms?

Good to see KKL nominated. I’d kinda like to see Heather win again, but Eileen probably should. She’s long overdue.

Chandler Massey should win again. Fo sho!

Any news if the Emmys will be broadcast?

Daniel Polo played the role of Jamie Vernon, the young man Summer Newman & Fenmore Baldwin were cyber-bullying on “Y & R” – the character was written out of GC by having him go to DC with Ronan Malloy.

GH didn’t deserve to win. The writing and quality of the show is terrible. The biggest joke it that Kelly Sullivan got in over Kimberly McCullough. Not the first time since it seems the academy has the usual pets with the acting categories. Will never forget the FA reveal where Kimberly killed the scenes and I remember reading everyone commenting how she would get it since she was excellent (even non fans said she was exceptional) yet she got ignored again. This is why these awards are a joke. First with only 4 soaps and then with the voters choosing the same friends year after year.

Congrats to DOOL, Y&R, B&B (didn’t watch the newer OLTL ) they deserve to be nominated since they are a real soap opera unlike what TIIC did to GH. TIIC ruined GH that many fans knew and loved. It barely resembles GH unless your new and never watched. TIIC push certain characters who are the writers pets and at the expense of legacy characters and vets. You don’t ruin a legacy character who grew up on GH and give everything she was to their pet who couldn’t make it on her own.

jimh(leave it to beaver)
jimh(leave it to beaver)

Kelly was so much better than Kim(she looked bored most of the time but i cant blame her)…i agree with most of the other stuff your saying…GH is off track with the fans and needs a complete turnaround storywise and house cleaning soon or it may loose more viewers!!!

Glad to see that Arianne Zucker has been nominated. Would have been thrilled if Allison Sweeney and Kelly Monaco were also nominated.

Thank goodness Jason Thompson got nominated, because Patrick had rough year. James Scott got severely snubbed.

FINALLY! Jane Elliott is getting recognition for her hard work.

Guess that GH learned a valuable lesson by firing a good actress(Kelley Sullivan) for no good reason.

GH pulls rabbits and subliminal oughta their arsenal so fast…. why NOT re-hire Kelly Sullivan…. it was Kate : Connie’s Twin who died

I’d take this and run with

she’d supplant ALL of them AT GH

I have to agree with James Scott’ interview… that DAYS of OUR Lives… Truly IS in a Healthy Place…. should win : Ta-Da two years in a row… best serial

Another thing! Are they serious GH got nominated for costume and casting. Sorry but costumes look like they come from a trash can. And as for casting, I have my doubts that MT is the one casting and not
his assistant who is probably cheaper or FV himself. Casting has been horrible since FV and RC took over. These newbies are terrible, which is why many are forced and shoved down viewers throats.

tenblde

I am not surprised that GH did not get a nomination for writing, directing, and best show. The show may have gone up in the ratings but the storylines and writing is a ploy —- bring on the vets and then write horrible storylines that make them look bad and then dismiss them so they are upset — Jack Wagner, Gene Francis, Kimberly McCullough, Tristan Rogers (these are icons of GH and the soap industry). They may act like Cartini is terrific but we longtime fans know how they feel. Cartini uses these vets as fillers for promoting his newbies that no one cares about.

The writing is inconsistent, the storylines don’t mess and the conversations between characters that the fans want to see never get written — they happen offscreen. The writing is plot point driven and not character driven — that is why there are even less nominations for acting then years before. No FH, TG, MB — all who are the best actors in the business.

Also in the industry Frank is known as a micro-manager in the directing and this was a comment from the industry that they don’t like that.

Furthermore, Frank admitted that they submitted the nurses ball as the scenes for the show — something that was campy and not liked by many people because it wasn’t as good as the ones in the 1990s — when GH won 6 best show Emmys under Wendy Riche. Frank also admitted helping KMc pick out her scenes for the nomination and she of course didn’t get a nomination — even though she has been getting great reviews for her return from the magazines — obviously because Cartini can’t tell the good from the bad.

I agree that is a slap in the face to GH and how it is not respected in the industry and maybe changes need to happen.

Beth CP
Beth CP

Excellent comment. I sincerely hope that the suits higher up, including Vicki Dummer, re-evaluate the regime they’ve chosen to oversee this show, especially the headwriter. I would be less than honest if I said I was disappointed that GH wasn’t on the ballot for Best Drama and Best Writing. Directing can be a toss up, but In the end, FV and RC have no one to blame but themselves for the poor showing in the other two categories that GH was left out of.

Glad to see Eric Martsolf nominated as well. I’m eh on Chandler. IMHO Freddie’s always been a better actor so it’s sad to not have him up there. Also wish Blake and Greg would have been nominated. Both were very strong last year.

What a joke. The head honcho at GH must have really pised the academy off.How could every soap but GH get nominated .Some have not even been on for over a year.We all should all know by now that these awards are all scripted by the networks.who’s turn is it to win this year!.GH has been on for over 50 years. They must be doing something right.

andrew hass

I agree.Plus i’m wondering if this was another swipe against ABC for cancelling AMC and OLTL and the only way people could do it was to punish GH.If GH wasn’t one of the best soaps last year that’s fine but they should be judged by that and not anything that happened behind the scenes because that’s not fair to the people at GH that i’m sure did the best they could. As OLTL i didn’t watch it.So i can’t say if it was one of the best soaps last year or not but i’m wondering if their nomination also had something to do with the judges wanting to punish ABC.Plus maybe the judges think if OLTL gets nominated or even wins it could make Prospect Park bring it back. Also the judges may have known they couldn’t nominate both AMC and OLTL for best show because then people might have wondered if they were using the Emmys to prove a point.

not happy at all…while I wish all those that were nominated the best of luck, I really feel that the nominations were a bit biased…not saying that the actors and people who work on Y&R don’t deserve to be nominated, 61 nominations, comon…there were plenty of actors on GH who also deserved a nomination..i personally think that GH got the shaft here and i’m not all that upset that it doesn’t look like its gonna be televised, specially after last years fiasco..don’t wanna put myself through that again and what with GH being shafted, NO THANKS

Eva LaRue Talks On Her Daytime Emmy Nomination, And Opens Up About The Loss Of John Callahan

For Eva LaRue, the past two months have been some of the most emotionally gut-wrenching and challenging of her life, following the passing of her ex-husband, father of her child, and dearest friend, John Callahan (Ex-Edmund, All My Children). The outpouring of support she has received not only from her former AMC cast mates, but the soap world in general illustrates just how dear Eva is to all of us, and how many people had special memories of their time with John.

While mourning the loss of Callahan along with their daughter, Kaya, there was some heartwarming and re-affirming news that any actress would love to hear. Eva was nominated for a Daytime Emmy in the Outstanding Guest Performer in a Drama Series for her work as Celeste Rosales on CBS’ The Young and the Restless, and she is great company as her former AMC co-star Michael E. Knight (Ex-Tad) is also nominated along with her for his work on General Hospital.

The coronavirus pandemic has hit our country and world hard, but through it All My Children virtual reunions emerged as fans were engaged by the content, transported to happier times that brought them back to familiar faces in Pine Valley in which Eva participated along with her good friends, Kelly Ripa, Mark Consuelos and so many more, thanks to the EW. com weeklong event which concluded on Friday.

Michael Fairman TV talked with Eva in this very candid, at times heartbreaking, and open conversation where she shares details into the final days of her beloved John, her last moments with him, and how she tried to plan a memorial in his honor during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For so many of us, 2020 has certainly seen more lows then highs, but in the end for Eva, to receive a nomination now (an award she was last nominated for back in 1997 as Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for her work as Dr Maria Santos on All My Children) couldn’t have come at a better time. Here now is our conversation with Eva.

Photo: JPI

I’ve been thinking so much about you.  I’m glad we could do this, and in the midst of the tragedy of losing John Callahan, and then receiving a Daytime Emmy nomination.  What was your reaction when you learned you were nominated in a category with none other than your former AMC castmate and good friend, Michael E. Knight (Ex-Tad, AMC, now Martin, GH)?

EVA:  Oh, I know!  He’s the first person I texted!  I was like, “Congratulations, Michael!  Did you ever in a million years think that you and I would be in the same category of anything?”  Then I said, “And when you win this, can I just borrow it for the weekend just to dress it up and take pictures with it… just want to borrow it, just babysit the trophy for a weekend, please?” (Laughs)

Photo: JPI

What did you end up submitting that landed you the nomination for your role as Celeste on Y&R?

EVA: I submitted a scene with Peter Bergman (Jack, Y&R), who I have been friends for 30 years, if not more, and in all that time we had never worked together.  I met him when I was married to John O’Hurley (Ex- Dr. James Grainger) because John was over at The Young and the Restless at the time.  I went to a Christmas party with John to Peter and Mariellen’s house, and do you know who else was there?  Lisa Rinna (Ex-Billie, Days), and it was before she had gotten Days of Our Lives. She was dating Peter Barton (Ex-Scott Grainger, Y&R) at the time. We both ended up on soaps at the same time.  So, I submitted a scene with Peter, who is amazing, warm and open and such a great actor. Then I submitted a scene with my on-screen daughter Sasha Calle (Lola, Y&R) – I love that girl, and another one with Michelle Stafford (Phyllis, Y&R) who has also been my great friend for a couple of decades. The other scene I put on my reel was with me and Jordi Vilasuso (Rey, Y&R) who I also adore.  He is awesome and such a sweetheart.  I only had two months worth of material to draw upon.  So, I just submitted the scenes that I liked the best, and they all were within story, and all made sense.

Photo: Getty Images

Where is Celeste supposed to be now?

EVA:  She went back to Florida, and that was that. I would never say never to anything, but it was always supposed to be a short stint, and it was great.

So not only is it you and Michael E. Knight, but Jeffery Vincent Parise, Chrishell Stause, and Elissa Kapneck. This Guest Performer category is loaded!

EVA:  I know! I know and love, Chrishell (Ex-Amanda) because we worked together on All My Children, too, right before I left, and she is a doll.  She just might be the sweetest, kindest, girl on the planet.  She literally might be the sweetest person who ever lived!  I don’t know the other two nominees personally.  So, I’m excited for them too.  It’s such a diverse category.  It’s just really fun to be nominated with all of them.

Photo: Hallmark Channel

You were nominated before, though, for your work as Maria on All My Chldren during the emotional baby switch storyline; working opposite Susan Lucci (Ex-Erica) for a lot in it.

EVA:  Yes.  I was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for All My Children, and I was nominated for Best Original Song.  I wrote a song when Maria came ‘back from the dead’ to All My Children, with a producer friend of mine from Miami Sound Machine.

Photo: Live with Kelly Ryan

So, you’ve been doing all of these All My Children virtual reunions, which is so interesting that in this pandemic, people are looking for content, and they dip back into these beloved shows.  Was it fun doing the EW.com Santos Family reunion with everybody?

EVA:  Oh yeah, it was really, really fun.  I only saw in the big picture everybody else’s photo who was a part of it, and the people who I actually do hang out with the most, and see the most, and talk to the most, are Kelly Ripa (Ex-Hayley), Mark Consuelos (Ex-Mateo), and Sydney Penny (Ex-Julia).  I don’t see Sydney as much, but I do see her probably once every two years at least, but Sarah Michelle Geller (ExKendall) I see all the time and talk to all the time.  Kelly, Mark, and Sarah are the ones who walked me through that first week when John Callahan passed.  They literally were on the phone with me, the three of them, almost every day, but I got beautiful outreach, from what seemed like everyone.  This is when no matter how many years have passed since you have been in daytime, that the daytime family as a group – there used to be fifteen shows, now there are four – and people have bounced around and they are on other shows- – but the entire soap opera community reached out,   I cannot even tell you how much that meant to me.  It was overwhelming, and it was really, spectacularly beautiful.

Photo: JPI

I hope it was some solace to you knowing how much people loved John, and also that they love and care so deeply for you.

EVA:  I mean, people who did not even work with John reached out.  Every soap was represented by getting a hold of me, sending a text or a phone call, or if they didn’t have my personal information, they tweeted, or whatever it was… literally from every reach of soapdom.  It was amazing.

And your relationship with John was amazing with all of the ups and downs you went through; that you remained such dear friends.

EVA:  We remained really great friends all the way.

Photo: JPI

I so remember when the two of you first got together and it was this storybook real life soap couple romance.  John was always so sweet to me.  I was so, so sad, and you know, my heart just broke for you.

EVA:  I think it was just such a shock.  I don’t think anybody, and even Kaya were talking about it, because she graduated this week, and her dad is not here.  We’re not having a graduation, because of COVID-19, which sucks on top of it, but we were just kind of talking through the feelings of it.  She said, “You know what’s weird?  I guess I never pictured dad getting old, and I always wondered why, and now I know.”  When I would get on John about his heart or his health, he used to always say, ‘Oh, don’t worry Evala, (he always called me “Evala”).  I’m going to be here.  I’m going to be here a long time.  I’m fine.  I’m going to be here to walk Kaya down the aisle and see her kids and all that.  Stop worrying,” Every time he said it to me, something in my gut said, “I don’t think he is.  I don’t think he is,” but I always just dismissed that.  But never in my wildest dreams did I think John wouldn’t make it to her high school graduation.  He was only 66.

Photo: JPI

I had heard you ended up running to Palm Springs to be near John.  I can’t even imagine what that must have been like.

EVA:  The only good thing about this pandemic is that we had been shut down for only two weeks at that point.  Kaya and I got in the car.  John had some heart procedures the day before, on a Thursday.  I called him in the morning before he went in for the procedure.  I said, “Call me as soon as you get out of there.  Call me as soon as you come-to again, and you’re good,” and he said, “Okay, I will.”  I said, “I’m going to send Kaya out to you on Friday for the weekend, just so you have somebody to hang out and watch you, and I might come out too,” And then, I said, “Maybe, I’ll come down too in case you are feeling weak, just to watch out for you for the weekend.”   So, he called me after the procedure.   I said, “I cannot believe they sent you home! You just had some major heart stuff done.”  He said, “Oh no, they said I’m fine.  It was just run-of-the-mill heart stuff, angiogram…”  I was like, “Are you sure?”  He said, “Yeah, I’m fine.  I’m just tired.  I’m going to go to sleep.”  I said, “Do you want me to send Kaya out tonight?” and he was like, “No, no, no.  Send her tomorrow.”  So, in the morning, I called him at 9:00am.  No answer.  I texted him.  He always texted me like Johnny on the spot, and then texts me immediately back.  So, I call him again at 10.  Nothing.  His best friend calls me about a half-hour later, “Hey, I talked to John at about 8:00 this morning.  He said he was feeling really, really shitty and was going to go back to the hospital, and then, I texted him again at like 8:30 to just tell him something, and he hasn’t texted me back, and he always texts me immediately back.”  I said, “Oh my, God, I’ve been trying to get a hold of him for two hours; he hasn’t texted me back,”   I said, “You know what, I’ll call you back.”  So, I called his friend who lives down the street from John, and I said, “Go to his house, please right this second, knock on the door, jump the fence, knock on his bedroom, he might be asleep, I don’t know.”  So, he gets there, nobody is answering.  I said, “Break into the house please.  So, he did, and John was collapsed in the bathroom.  They called the paramedics, and as soon as they called me back and said, “John is unresponsive in the bathroom,” Kaya and I threw everything in the car, and what usually takes us two and a half hours without traffic, we made it down there from Los Angeles in an hour and forty-five minutes.

Photo: JPI

I don’t know how you made it down there in one piece. Thank, God!

EVA:  I drove so fast, like literally broke all land speed records and thank God because we got there just in time.  He was in emergency.  He hadn’t been put up in ICU yet, where we wouldn’t have been able to see him.  They weren’t going to let us in the hospital.  Thank God the person answering the door was an All My Children fan.  She was the one saying, “Sorry, no one is allowed in the hospital, no one can come in,” and I was like, “No, no, no, my ex-husband just came in.”  She said, “Was it Edmund?” and I said, “Yes, it was Edmund!”  She said, “Okay, follow me.”  Thank God for All My Children.  Thank God.  So, we followed this woman secretly, and we get to spend a half-hour with him in Emergency.  He was already on life-support, totally unresponsive, but we got to play John his favorite music, we got to just sit there and hold his hand and talk to him, and tell him how much we loved him.  Sarah Michelle Gellar called right when we were in the hospital in Emergency, and she said, “Put the phone by his ear,” so I put the phone by his ear, and she talked to John too, and she told him how much she loved him.  She used to always call him “GP”, which was short of grandpa, because she came on the show when she was 15, and she didn’t have a dad, and John acted like a dad to her – but she used to always call him “grandpa”, and he hated “grandpa”, so he was like, “You can call me “GP”, but not grandpa,” so she always called him GP.  I just put the phone by John’s ear, and what was crazy is that when she talked to him, his feet started twitching.  He started moving his feet.  Then, when Kaya was talking to him about Yankee season, he started moving his feet.  We were kind of hopeful that something was changing for the better.  We had about a half-hour with him, and then, they took him up to ICU, and then, we knew we couldn’t see him again.  They called us later that night that he had passed.

Photo: JPI

I am just so thankful that you got to see John one last time.

EVA:  I thank God every day that we got to say goodbye, because if we hadn’t gotten there in time to say goodbye, I just don’t know.

It’s very rare that a couple after a divorce, who have a child, and went from romance to dear friends, end up maintaining that relationship so many years later in their lives.  I know so many people who were together at one point in their lives, for years, and they don’t even talk to each other now.

EVA:  Well, you know, like any divorce, the first four years afterwards were super contentious but then, by year five, we kind of had this major breakthrough, and from then on, he was one of my closest friends, and one of the things we always kept alive for each other was we loved to  dance together. We fell in love, I think, dancing because originally our characters on AMC met at this country-western bar, and we had to take country line dancing lessons on the show.  They hired a choreographer for us so that during those scenes where we were falling in love, we would actually be able to do a two-step! So, we went out and practiced at Denim and Diamonds, which was a big country-western place in New York City at the time.  We used to go out with a whole group of us.  It was me, and Teresa Blake (Ex-Gloria) and Kelly Ripa, and her boyfriend at the time, Winsor Harmon (Ex-Del), sometimes Walt Willey (Ex-Jack); we just had a whole crew of us who would go out country dancing.  John and I also loved singing together.  He had the most amazing gravely kind of rockstar voice, but his real talent was harmonizing.  He could harmonize to anything.  So, when he would come over, we would sit in the kitchen and sing, and sing, and sing until the late hours because that’s what we loved to do, and that’s what he loved to do.  That’s one of my favorite last memories of us.  He was just over the month before, and Kaya’s bedroom is near the kitchen, so she came out and was like, “Can you two shut up?”  It was like two in the morning and we were still singing in the kitchen. (Laughs)  John was my dear friend and my confidant.

Were you able to have some kind of service during this stay-at-home pandemic we are all dealing with, in order to mourn the loss of John?

EVA:  It’s been so crazy.  We couldn’t even have a funeral.  That’s what made it all the more heartbreaking.  There were less than twenty of us, and we just got on a Zoom call and memorialized John.   I thought we were going to do a big Zoom memorial, but it seemed so overwhelming and so impersonal, it just was rubbing us wrong in every way.  Every way we were looking at it, we were like, “Oh my, God, we just can’t.”  We wanted to invite everybody he had ever worked with, and we were like, “No, we want to do that when everything can open back up again, and invite every person, and have a party” because John was always the life of every party.  Maybe we can do that in the fall or next year.  I kept trying to write something for the small memorial we did do for three days.  I kept coming back to this one song, because John was always the consummate bartender, too.  I sang a song that Bette Midler sang on the very last episode of Johnny Carson.  It was “One for My Baby (and One More for the Road)” and it’s about a bartender who has got a big personality and a lot to say.   I changed some of the words around a bit just to reflect who John was, and so, I ended up singing for it instead of speaking.  We always talked about that last episode of Carson; how stunningly emotional it was when Bette sang that song to kind of sing Johnny off for of all of his years on the air.  So, that’s what I did and because we loved to sing together, it just made sense.

I do think you touched upon something, earlier, too.  I don’t think any other genre would have that kind of unbridled camaraderie.  It’s such a family, like you said.  I don’t think you would find that quite like this; certainly in show business.

EVA:  I really don’t think you can. Even though there is always a good amount of competition in the soaps as well; between the soaps it’s like they are any sports team, but there is always a level of respect, love, and familial connection within the community.  I think that is why they have stood the test of time.  I really do think that is what hooks our audience, that is what keeps them there after all of these years, even though unfortunately the genre is antiquated looking, there is something about it that is nostalgic, familial, and comfortable for people.

Every time I talk about All My Children, why do you think everybody go ga-ga for it, when it’s been off the air for several years now?

EVA:  It speaks to people’s childhoods.  It speaks to how we grew up.  You can’t undo nostalgia.  You can’t.  It’s in the way we grew up, the things we loved, the things that we scheduled our lives around, the people we fell in love with on the shows that we watched, who we cared about and loved their storylines. I grew up watching All My Children, General Hospital, and Days of Our Lives.

It must have been a spectacular moment for you when you realized you were actually in Pine Valley and a member of the cast of All My Children then?

EVA:  It was amazing.  I was a fan when I got the show.  I was a straight up fan.  I fangirled walking through that dressing room hallway for the first time! I was trying to keep it in check, but you know … (Laughs)

So, in closing, you would say, “Thrilled to be nominated”?

EVA:  Yes.  So fun.  It has really been a rollercoaster of a couple of months here.  That nomination was literally the bright, shining spot in all of this.
