The Katherine Kelly Lang & Zack Conroy Interview – The Bold and the Beautiful

No one does shockers quite like The Bold and the Beautiful. Recently, the Daytime Emmy Award winning drama series two years running aired the jaw-dropper of 2010.  At a graduation night soiree for Hope Logan (featuring the pulsating beats and performances by recording star Dandy Yankee) a case of mistaken identity has sent a ripple effect that will be felt for many months for the Forresters, Logans, and the Joneses.  In a night filled with hot dancers, sexy costumes, and white masks at a sin-filled masquerade ball, young Oliver comes to meet up with his girlfriend Hope to celebrate her big night and the chance to perhaps have a night of passionate sex with the young woman.  Then, in a series of twists, Oliver, thinking a masked Brooke is Hope, has tawdry sex with his girlfriend’s mother on the terrace of the mansion housing the masquerade ball!

On-Air On-Soaps, Michael Fairman sat down for an exclusive interview with the two participants in this case of “Whoops! Wrong man, wrong woman”, that is just the tip of the iceberg of their tangled storyline.  B&B favorite, Katherine Kelly Lang (Brooke), and hot BOLD newbie, Zack Conroy (Oliver) discuss their nerves, surprise, and thrills at getting the chance to play out this unusual set of circumstances with each other that all started with, as it is lovingly now called on the internet, “The Party Boink”.  Make sure to listen to the interview in audio as well, in our player below.

*This feature will also be in print as an exclusive for an upcoming issue of TV SOAP Australia.  For more archived interviews from TV SOAP visit our

The Katherine Kelly Lang & Zack Conroy Interview

MICHAEL:

Ok, “The Party Boink”…I thought this was the best cliffhanger of a Friday tag ever in the history of B&B!  When the camera slowly pans, and in slow motion to Oliver, and he sees that the woman, who takes off her mask and is in the same blue dress as Hope, is Brooke, he then realizes he had sex with Brooke by mistake!  And the show goes to black!   Zack did you see the episode back?

ZACK:

© JPI Studios

Yeah, I saw it.  One of the producers of the show came up to me and said, “It was one of the best tags she had ever seen!”  I watched it and I really didn’t know what to think, but it was like watching a movie.  I really didn’t think so much of me in it; it was just so cool…

KATHERINE:

It was cool!  The whole party, and Daddy Yankee, and the masks, and the clothes, and everything I had said in dialog for weeks.  It was cool, and it looked different, and it looked like something other than daytime.

MICHAEL:

It looked like a huge party scene with this fantastically produced slo-mo tag.

ZACK:

It was funny.  A couple of my friends called up who had been watching, and they sent it out and around to everyone to watch, and I was getting all these calls that day.

KATHERINE:

What did they say?

MICHAEL:

What were you doing up against the wall? (Laughs)

© JPI Studios

ZACK:

Way to go buddy!  (Laughs)

MICHAEL:

Katherine, what did people you know say?

KATHERINE:

Did he wear a condom… (Laughs)

MICHAEL:

So when you heard, Katherine, that this was going to happen, did B&B executive producer and head writer Brad Bell say, “Come up to the office.  I have something to tell you.”  Or, did you find out when you opened the script?

KATHERINE:

I think Brad did not want to tell me.  He said, “I have an interesting storyline coming up for you.” (Laughs) Usually he tells me, and this time he didn’t tell me.  I thought, what does that mean?  He is not telling me.  But Brad went on to say, “But it’s really good.” And then it wasn’t till I heard people whispering about my story that I went, “What? What?” And then I said to Zack, “You better read that script.”(Laughs)

ZACK:

She had this smirk on her face.  And, as I walked out of my dressing room people were kind of looking at me, and someone said, “Just read it!”

KATHERINE:

I was nervous for my character because I was thinking, ‘Does Brooke really need this to add to her resume?’ But, it was done differently and it was an accident! (Laughs) Really! (Laughs)

MICHAEL:

© JPI Studios

You did not go, “Oh, my God!  I slept with one of my daughter’s men again?”

KATHERINE:

Yes, and then honestly, part of me was excited by it, and then another part of me was concerned about what my character would look like.  I did not know what to say to Brad.  I know we leave all story up to him, and I did not want to mess his story up.  So I did not say anything to Brad till the day of shooting the scene, like five minutes before I had to go to set and do that scene with Zack.  I go into the production booth and say, “I don’t think this is going to work.  I think Brooke should be drunk.”  Brad said, “Ah, that would be two evils: one a drunken Chaperone who is messing around, instead of just messing around sober.”

MICHAEL:

But you played it a bit loosey goosey!  Sort of high on life?

KATHERINE:

She was excited and high on her hormones.

MICHAEL:

But, did you really think that Brooke could not tell that it wasn’t Ridge?  I know Oliver and Ridge were wearing the same Forrester Creations original jacket, but are they even the same height, really?

ZACK:

I think he has a couple inches on me.

KATHERINE:

It was confusing….and I am trying to justify! (Laughs)

MICHAEL:

Did the two of you know how you were going to go up against the wall, and choreograph having sex against the concrete?

© JPI Studios

© JPI Studios

ZACK:

That was the part that I did not know what we were doing, because they (directors) were like, “All right, go!”   I thought this was for flashbacks.  And, I am very new to the show, and I did not want to do anything that was too uncomfortable for people.

KATHERINE:

That’s because no one really knew what to tell us to do.  So I am like, “Yeah, what do we do?  I mean we are fully clothed.  How are we going to look like we are actually doing it?”  Then, that is when I was trying to put my leg up and around, and so at least you saw some leg.  And they had to cut, because one time I got up on him and put two legs around him and CBS said. “No”.  And then I think there was also your hand pulling my dress.

MICHAEL:

Were CBS Standards and Practices there on the set?

KATHERINE:

No, but they look at everything before it goes to air, and they cut two parts of it out.

MICHAEL:

I thought the funniest thing was that Brooke wanted to do it without lifting their masks off!  How perfect a set-up!

KATHERINE:

That was in the script in bold type. (Laughs) I was nervous about it because he is so cute and young, but it was fun once we started, and it felt kind of normal.

© JPI Studios

MICHAEL:

Was Oliver then thinking, “How cool!  I had this older woman,” or, “What did I do?”

ZACK:

We are obviously in that storyline right now.  I was actually hoping that immediately after I could have had a scene with Oliver’s sister Aggie (Sarah Brown) where I could have shown my real emotions and how I really felt.  Because look, if you are a dude…. before it all becomes a tragedy, with Steffy finding out, and her ultimatums and what not, that would have been kind of cool, because it is a fantasy for a young guy!

KATHERINE:

Well, the whole thing was mysterious and exciting, and it reminded me of that one movie…Eyes Wide Shut, kinda, sorta.

MICHAEL:

When she said the buzzwords, “I’m ready”, how did Brooke know to use those words? Where did that come from?  Because, what the viewers knew was that was the buzz word that Hope was going to use to Oliver, giving him the green light that they could have sex.  I was floored when it came out of Brooke’s mouth!

KATHERINE:

No, she did not know it was their buzzword.  It was when Ridge and Brooke had the scene before, when we were in the steam room, and getting all hot and heavy and we said, “We better not do this now.  Let’s wait, because we are late being Chaperones at Hope’s party!”  And we stopped right before doing it in the steam room, so Brooke was still horny.  So once we were at the party and started dancing, she was like, “I’m Ready.” It was just coincidence that she used those words to Ridge.

MICHAEL:

© JPI Studios

Oliver knew that was the buzzword, but it was for Hope and him.

ZACK:

Yeah, he had a moment of like, “This isn’t right.”  And at the same time, he had been waiting and waiting and waiting to have sex with Hope, so he thought at that moment, the door was opened for him to be with Hope.

MICHAEL:

What is the conflict of emotions?  I mean, Oliver then finds out about Brooke’s past, and that she has had sex with her children’s boyfriends before!

ZACK:

Hope tells me about her mother’s history with the men in her daughter’s life, and that kind of sets off a trigger to him that Brooke had sex with him on purpose, but that is not the case.

MICHAEL:

She didn’t really want Oliver?

KATHERINE:

No, she didn’t really.  Well, Brooke wanted to do it with her husband Ridge, and she did not want to make this big problem that happened.  But she definitely wanted to do it with her husband.

MICHAEL:

© JPI Studios

But now do you think that Oliver has an affinity for Brooke?

ZACK:

You know, I don’t know.  But it certainly opens things up in terms of story, so that would be very interesting to play.

KATHERINE:

Well, I asked Brad where it was going to go, and it was for Steffy to find out, and blackmail everyone.  But, you never know. It’s all about how the story is going and playing out as we are actually doing it.  Then Brad gets his ideas that maybe we should go this way with it, or maybe we should go that way with this.  So you never know, but it will make a lot of mess for the kids, young love, and with Brooke and Stephanie, most likely, and eventually.

ZACK:

And now these two have a bond.

KATHERINE:

This is kind of interesting.

MICHAEL:

From an accidental moment in time.

ZACK:

© JPI Studios

You had questioned me what my intention was, but now Brooke knows that Oliver is a good guy.

KATHERINE:

(Laughs) Yes, I really know you are a good guy.

MICHAEL:

Now the other woman in this, Brooke’s daughter, Hope.  How is acting with Kim Matula (Hope)?

KATHERINE:

She is great, and a great little actress, and focused and dedicated.

ZACK:

We were thrilled.  Kim and I were doing this lovey dovey stuff, but it needed a jolt, and because it all happens so fast there was a short build up.  But the relationship needed that spark, and long term this could be better for Oliver and Hope, because there wasn’t really anything to separate them at all.  It was all too perfect.

KATHERINE:

It’s just between Brooke and Oliver. We agreed to keep it a secret.

ZACK:

But Oliver is guilt ridden, and it was an accident. You can’t blame someone for something that was an accident.  Oliver has never been in this situation before, but Brooke has.  So he doesn’t really know that people can’t forgive.  So that will probably come up along the way.

KATHERINE:

© JPI Studios

Actually, I saw that scene where I was going to talk to you about love.  And I was like, “Oh, I am not sure about this speech coming from of all people, Brooke!”  But then I thought, it was kind of interesting when I saw it.  It was kind of nice.

MICHAEL:

Brooke, back in the day, was very racy.  So it’s interesting to kind of tease that aspect of her character again.

KATHERINE:

It’s nice, and it’s always exciting to play that material.  Things have been going so smooth for Ridge and Brooke lately that it was kind of a little boring, and I think for viewers, too.  I think the viewers want to see that old Brooke spark, or whatever that is again.  She is always creating trouble!

ZACK:

You know what is interesting, is that as crazy as this happenstance is, I think the way it was created is like it’s not a circus or so unbelievable.

KATHERINE:

Real life to me is stranger….

MICHAEL:

…. Well, I have not been to masquerade balls like that!  Zack, what do you think of your new B&B family?

ZACK:

© JPI Studios

It’s incredible, and it’s a great family of actors here.  I am so lucky to work with the superstars.  Working with Katherine, Susan Flannery (Stephanie), and Kim Matula and Jacqui Macinnes Woods (Steffy), I could not be in a better situation.  I was talking to a couple of my friends back in New York, and where they are at, and where I am at, and they are doing other things than soap operas.  But, I am so happy where I am at right now, I would not change a thing.

MICHAEL:

Katherine, what can you say about working with Zack?

KATHERINE:

He is fabulous and he is good and has positive energy.  It’s a good that they are bringing in the kids more to the stories, as they are developing into the next generation.  Some have come and gone and never really settled in, but with this group of people including Zack, Kim and Jackie, it’s very different, and he is adorable.

MICHAEL:

Zack has a very laid back style to the acting, which is very refreshing to see on soap operas.

KATHERINE:

He is not soapy and his approach is very laid back.  It’s good and refreshing.  Sometimes, I watch myself in a scene with him and go, “Oh, God.  I am over acting!  I’ve got to tone down a little.”  And it’s nice and refreshing to see that on daytime, because sometimes the actors feel they have to chew the scenery too much.  It’s best just to relax into it and be conversational.  But again, I was so nervous to work with Zack the first day.  You made me nervous!  Look at his eyes!

MICHAEL:

Zack, Steffy is going to get her claws into Oliver now that she knows about this mistaken identity sexcapade.  Everyone is going to have their lives turned upside down!

ZACK:

© JPI Studios

Yes, Steffy is going to cause hell.   She puts me on the list that she wants to hold onto this information, so it’s straight up blackmail and deranged.  So I will have to leave Hope to be with Steffy.

KATHERINE:

I won’t be happy with any blackmail, let alone from Steffy, and it’s involving my family and my daughter and whatever else she is throwing in the pot!  She is going to try and make me leave Forrester Creations!

MICHAEL:

Katherine, do you think an on-air coupling, or a romantic entanglement between Brooke and Oliver long term might be something of interest to you?

KATHERINE:

I think it’s interesting and I like the idea.  How could I not like the idea?  It’s different.  I love the story with Owen and Jackie, played by Brandon Beemer and Lesley-Anne Down. They are so good and sweet together.  It is an interesting relationship.

MICHAEL:

The whole show cannot be Cougar Town L.A.! (Laughs)

KATHERINE:

Don’t call me Mrs. Forrester!  It makes me feel old. (Laughs) Stop it!

MICHAEL:

So, what has been your favorite on-screen moment thus far, Zack, since you started on B&B?  Is it the “Party Boink”, or are there some other moments?

ZACK:

© JPI Studios

That by far was the funnest moment for sure. Things are happening so fast lately. I had 60 pages of dialog today.  I never had that on Guiding Light.  Sometimes, we had long days when we were shooting exteriors in Peapack, New Jersey, but not like this.  I was looking at myself in the mirror recently, and I said, “Zack that is unbelievable!”  I have only been doing this for a while, and the fact that I am doing all those lines in three days is crazy.

KATHERINE:

That is like one whole script or a whole play.

ZACK:

She has been doing this a long time, but for me it’s brand new.

MICHAEL:

Katherine, your young son was present one day when you and Zack were rehearsing the dialog from the sexcapade episodes!

ZACK:

Remember when we were running lines about that stuff?

KATHERINE:

Zack felt really nervous because he said, “Ah, Katherine, we are running lines about this and your son is sitting right there.”

ZACK:

I was sweating!

KATHERINE:

© JPI Studios

And my son then goes, “Oh yeah, mom.  I know.  I have heard it all from you.”   So it was not a big deal.

MICHAEL:

What can we tell the fans to look forward to?  More scintillating story?

KATHERINE:

I hope so.  I think we shot a lot of stuff lately, and I think there is more to see. We are heavy in the story.  So keep watching.

ZACK:

It’s drama at its best!

KKL rocks as Brooke Logan

This is an unusual interview to say the least. Katherine and Zack are very funny and very loose. Michael, you did ask some provocative questions that actually had the real stars being themselves, instead of the characters. It is very enticing. This wa a great creative story to persue. Now with Steffy knowing, you know she is going for the throat. But it is fun and I can’t wait to see where this is going and how it ends. You know Ridge is going to find out.

KKL rocks but this story sucks!!! No one wants Brooke with a 20 year old boy. Brooke haters are having a field day as it is. KKL needs a more mature story. The cliffhanger was good because it made people wonder if it was Steffy or Brooke but the fact it was Brooke just makes it sick. This is the third man she has cheated on her daughter with Michael! Not cool. Not cool at all! Thats not drama. That is an old story rewritten in a different way. Ratings show the story is blah!

Forgot to say thanks for the interview! It was nice to hear from the actors themselves. I just hope they know many fans aren’t exactly eatting this story up.

In the beginning, i was against this storyline. But it’s grown on me. It’s a soapy kind of mistake to make for Brooke and Oliver to sleep w/ each other. However, it’d be more interesting if Oliver does fall madly in love w/ Brooke down the line. And then Brooke commands him to stay w/ Hope since she can’t get her heart broken again. I don’t think Brooke and Oliver would ever become a couple since that would mean Brooke breaking up w/ Ridge. That would be boring and their reunion would be an eventuality. As for the Taylorettes who are hating on Brooke, that’s expected. But I’d rather Brooke be in a scandalous storyline than all the boring happy couple crap w/ Ridge. They need to make storylines like this, where the older and newer characters interact in the same storylines.

This is one time that I wish Brad Bell wouldn’t have crossed the line. because of Brooke’s past actions, Bridget finds her self in her Mother shoes. Now another daughter must pay for Brooke’s action and it appears that Brooke will never grow up.

Oh please finally an exiting story on B&B !
I love this Brooke and Oliver twist, finally something meaty for Brooke Logan, our awesome sexy trouble maker (and this time despite herself…even more funny and refreshing). And i am even could be for a real Brooke/Oliver hook up (Ridge is too boring and judgemental for Brooke, she deserves better). However i like Hope, she is a innocent good girl but not too boring so.. a love triangle could be good..and bring back Deacon in the mix could be even more interesting and ironic with his history with Brooke and Hope…
Anyway thanks Michael really good and cool interview, KKL and Zack Conroy seem really charming and a really cute “cougar” buddie team off-screen..lol

This story line is nothing new for Brooke Wall Banger. I think that it was trashy and shows that Brad Bell doesn’t have any writing skills and always use the shock and awe instead of letting this character grow up. What next? If Bridget’s baby live, will she be screwing him up against a wall when he grows up?

This interview was so much fun! I loved to hear everyone laugh so much! You really have a way of making people feel comfortable and relaxed and ultimately getting a better interview. The sexiness was fun too! I am enjoying the storyline and thought the tag was great! Thanks Michael!

BRADLEY BELL IS JUST A SEX ADDICT. THE MAN JUST HAVE RUINED BB. HE HAS LOST MORE VIEWERS THEN ALL THE SOAPS COMBINED. YEAH KELLY LANG THINK SHE STILL SIXTEEN EVEN IN REAL LIFE. ALL I CAN SAY THEY ARE SOME MESS UP FOLSKS IN LA. I DON’T CARE FOR KELLY LANG NEVER HAVE AND NEVER WILL. I WOULD SAY TO THIS ZACK GUY GO BACK TO ACTING SCHOOL YOUR NOT READY TO ACT YET OR BE CALLED AN ACTOR. TYLER BELL IS AN ACTOR. SUSAN FLANNERY IS AN ACTOR. BROOKE IS THE SEX QUEEN OF DAYTIME TV AND SHOULD GO DOWN IN HISTORY AS SUCH. ONCE AGAIN THE RATINGS HAVE DIPPED. BB HAS GONE UP IN THE RATINGS IN A LONG TIME. BB DIDED OUT WITH MR. WILLIAM BELL SR.

Why are you still watching this show? You complain on the boards all the time with the same exact rant that I knew it was you before I saw your name. No one makes you watch the show and you obviously do not enjoy it so why keep torturing yourself?

Michael, this was a great interview! Loved every minute of it. You can feel that the actors are simply having a good time with this wacky plot twist! It’s a soap opera, and in true soap fashion, there’s a camp and an “OMG” factor in this storyline. Lang realizes the show has been a bit boring lately and I, for one, tuned out for the last three months or so. It wasn’t until the party boink did I start tuning in again because this is how a soap lures people in. You give the audience a shock, then we just have to see where the story will go. And the more time you invest in it, the more likely you are to stick through the plot to see it all unfold. Conroy is doing great and you can tell Lang is having a blast. Fantastic interview Michael! Keep ’em coming.

Just when you think Brad Bell and Katherine Kelly Lang couldn’t get any sleazer, here they come up with the Mother and Father hosting a Graduattion Party for their teen age daughter and the daughter’s Mom get so hot in the pants listening to Pose Pose HOse, that thinking it’s her husband, take him up stairs to screw him up against the wall. Only later finding out that it was her daughter’s male friend.

Enough is enough. Is this what you want your kids watching this summer?

Are you and tgtsing the same person? Same rant different name! Watching B&B is not a requirement.

This was a cliffhanger, I did not see it coming at all. I thought it was Steffy but the writers surprised us when they had Brooke be behind the mask, it was juicy and great.

I have to admit I was shocked to the core when it turned out to be Brooke behind the mask. It was so unexpected and made me think back to the time on “Santa Barbara” when Julia and Father Michael had sex. I had to stop watching for a while…it just got to be TOO much. However, this time I stuck with it. Since it wasn’t Ridge and Hope that Brooke and Oliver thought they both thought they were with it was just a matter of how people would react when it all came out. Steffy, Stephanie, Taylor and all the other hypocrites on the show call Brooke a slut and a whore, but together those three could teach whore classes. This has turned out to be a compelling and surprising storyline. I’m just glad that now Steffy can cry instead of being a bully. She deserves everything that comes to her. I just hope one day all of Stephanie’s dirty little secrets (Ridge’s paternity can’t be the ONLY skeleton in her closet) come to full view and Brooke can rub her nose in it or take the high road and give Stephanie the break she has never given Brooke.

In the first moments when I’ve see the episode with Hope graduations it make me confuse and I did not blivet she can be such bad mom in one way is so attractions for a person like as in 40 this parties make as vibrant and the same time feel young . I realize was a mistake but like we see Ridge start to hit her up before in steam room is was everything prepare so no intentions .I hope like usual first kiss or love never remain true the same Hope well not remain with Oliver is better to have Liam by making this Bill $ unified them and make a prosper against new company come on the way make the show more true vital with the reality today involve the real life . About Katherine I love her voice I fell like I so her in a new episode Zack is lite shay but it seems hi improving working in this team.

Regarding wath happend between Brooke and Oliver was an unexpected moment. But I was surprise that Ridge react calm . Some other man…will not admitted…and never be with that waman again, in the saime relatio

Wath abbout Thomas? UUUUUUHHHH!!! Life send a woman in to some spats thath is hard to understend. But a man like Ridge will …take, becouse love is keepting us , in to a wrld not yze to understand. don’t sewrch the rulls in love , becouse U will be creizy to understand those rulls !

I katherine kelly lang

this episode was so awesome !! very cool i think that zack conroy and all the ather actor do very good job !!

i think that this soap opera is the only that makes u see all the episodes!

zack is HOTTTTTTTTTTT

(WATCH) B&B’s Katherine Kelly Lang and Annika Noelle Talk Lead Actress Emmy Nominations and Brooke and Hope’s Mother/Daughter Relationship

Two of The Bold and the Beautiful’s leading ladies, Katherine Kelly Lang (Brooke) and Annika Noelle (Hope), are in the running for the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Daytime Drama Series at the upcoming 51st annual Daytime Emmy Awards.

Original series star Lang, along with Noelle, play mother and daughter on the series, which makes for an interesting dynamic on-screen and off. For Katherine, this marks her fourth Daytime Emmy Acting nomination. She previously won a producer Emmy for Venice the Series, and for Annika, this is her first Lead Actress nomination after previously scoring a nod in the Supporting Actress category.

On B&B, Brooke and Hope have had a rocky road this past year, with Brooke disapproving of Hope giving into her feelings and desires for Thomas (Matthew Atkinson), and the dissolution of her marriage to Liam (Scott Clifton). Meanwhile, Hope watched Brooke have marital troubles with Ridge (Thorsten Kaye), in part to Taylor (Krista Allen), only for her to win him back.

Photo: HutchinsPhoto

The two actresses chatted with Michael Fairman for an exclusive livestream interview this week on You Tube’s Michael Fairman Channel where they shared their thoughts, reactions and scenes from their nominated reels, how they see the current climate between Brooke and Hope, and much more.  Below are some excerpts from the conversation.

Katherine, what are your thoughts on getting a Lead Actress nomination as this point in your career?

KATHERINE: I think it’s great. I was so happy to be nominated. It was unexpected, but I was really happy about it.  Of course, I think everybody wants to be nominated, or get an Emmy at some point in their life, especially if they’ve been on a show for a very long time and you put a lot of work in. You do many, many scenes and hopefully, good enough scenes to be able to be nominated, and get in into the running. But yes, it’s hard to me. It’s hard every time when it comes around. I get anxiety whenever Emmy-time comes around.

Photo: JPI

What scenes were on both of your nominated reels?

KATHERINE: I just submitted the two back to back shows that I had between Brooke and Taylor (Krista Allen). It was when their relationship came to an end because they became friends, which was really nice. They swore off Ridge, which was great, and they had a nice relationship for a little while. But then, Brooke finally realized Taylor still had her sights on Ridge and this wasn’t going to work. So, she ended the relationship with Taylor. At that point, she really had it with Taylor, because she really trusted her and she really liked their friendship. She was shocked to find out what Taylor was still doing and how she still wanted Ridge in the end. And so for Brooke, there was no going back after that.

Photo: JPI

ANNIKA: My reel launched into Hope’s denial of “I’m nothing like you, mom. I have a solid marriage.” Cut to Liam confronting her about what happened in Rome and the choices that were made there. And then Brooke walking in on her and Thomas together and mother/daughter going toe to toe, and then finally kind of wrapping it up with Hope just coming into her own and just not being so swayed by other people’s choices.

Is it difficult for you to chose to enter into the Daytime Emmy race?

KATHERINE: I don’t want to do a competition, because we do this for a living, because we love it. I think if you don’t love it, you won’t be here for very long. So, it just feels weird in a way that it has to be a judging where everybody’s judged against each other.  I don’t like that feeling because I like it all to be about family, which it is. Sometimes in a competition it can get kind of of strange. So to me, the prize is just coming to work every single day, getting to work with wonderful people like Annika, everybody in the office, the producers, the writers, the directors, the crew, and just working with everybody. It’s wonderful how we all work so well together and just being able to do something that I love to do every single day and play this character of Brooke on a TV show on CBS.

ANNIKA: I would have never thought in a million years you would get anxious from it. For me, it’s very obvious that I get very anxious.

Photo: JPI

Katherine, what do you recall about Annika when you first met her and then shared scenes with her, after having Kim Matula as her predecessor in the part?

KATHERINE: Honestly, it was super easy to work with Annika. She just fell right into the character. I loved her immediately and her energy. Actually, I got to read with her. I loved her, even then in the reading. I was kind of mesmerized with her, like her eyes. She’s very innocent, open face, and you can feel her. I loved Kim Matula, too, who played Hope before Annika, and there was a little time between them. It was nice that they didn’t recast somebody right away, because that’s always kind of shocking. You want to give it a little time, and for the audience to accept it and to find somebody new and bring them on. People come and go andyou have to kind of go with the flow.

Annika, what was your first impression upon meeting Katherine?

ANNIKA: Oh, I understood that this was the legend who had been on the show since the beginning. I think you were my second callback. I think the first one I read with Scott Clifton (Liam). When they called me back again and they had me read with you, I remember I just opened the doors and she was just  standing there. I was like, “Oh, Gosh. Okay. I’m reading with Katherine Kelly Lang.” She was very professional, knew her lines like back and forth, and she was saying the lines as if she was really the character. It wasn’t even like acting. That’s how good she is.

Photo: JPI

Where do you think Brooke and Hope’s relationship is at now?

ANNIKA: Brooke and Hope have maybe ironed out some misunderstandings. I think there’s still that little bit of Hope’s baggage or just unresolved trauma, or she needs to go see a psychiatrist about not wanting to become like her mother. I think she acted out in a lot of ways within the Thomas storyline.

KATHERINE: Brooke wasn’t happy with Hope and Thomas. She didn’t approve. Brooke’s a little bit more relieved and doesn’t have to deal with that pressure and can get back to the relationship with her daughter. I think they’re really good friends and I think they have a good understanding of each other and their positions within this relationship. I think it’s only going to get stronger and better, when they realize that they are two powerhouses together.

Photo: JPI

Remember when Brooke and Thomas had their psychedelic berry trip and we didn’t know if they slept together?

ANNIKA: I try not to think about it. (Laughs)

KATHERINE: Well, I loved it! I almost have to say that was my favorite fun story. In it, our plane crashed in the ocean and this was a huge production. They had made a pool inside a hangar, and then the pool was full with broken plane pieces, and we are sputtering up out of the water. It was dark and misty, they had the smoke, everything. It looked like a movie. So, we got to do that which was so much fun. When we were stranded on the island, we actually shot those scenes in Malibu. But, they also made a huge deserted island on set. It was humongous. It almost took up the whole stage, and that’s when Brooke and Thomas were high on berries, and the flowers would come out of the the cave. There were a lot of CGI effects. It was crazy and incredible. Adam Gregory was playing Thomas then, and we had a lot of fun. We never knew if Thomas and Brooke actually did it or not, but then it turned out they didn’t, because they realized it was like something in a dream.

ANNIKA: We like to keep things vague.

The show, at times, likes to pull out the classic line, “Slut from the Valley.” How do you feel about your character being called that when it was originated by Stephanie Forrester, who used to dig at Brooke?

KATHERINE: Do I mind, “Slut from the Valley?” I didn’t mind it when Stephanie (Susan Flannery) would say it, but I kind of mind it when other people say it.  I thought that was Stephanie’s line, and that should just come from her.

Annika, one of the hottest topics on B&B’s fans mind in our live chat, is when Thomas returns from Paris, will he and Hope rekindle their relationship or is it truly over?

ANNIKA: I’m just as in the dark as everyone else about what is to come with that. So, I’m kind of waiting on pins and needles to see if we revisit it, or if Thomas has moved on. I’m just so curious to see what is to come. I think we’re going to find out very soon.

Check out the full video interview with Katherine and Annika below. Now let us know, do you enjoy the mother/daughter scenes between Brooke and Hope as played by Katherine and Annika. Are you rooting for one of them to win the Daytime Emmy for Lead Actress? What do you think will happen in the future for Brooke and for Hope? Weigh-in below.

(INTERVIEW) Y&R’s Eric Braeden Chats on His First Lead Actor Daytime Emmy Nomination in 20 Years, Why He Entered the Race After Voting Reform, and His Enduring Legacy as Victor Newman

The Young and the Restless’ iconic Eric Braeden (Victor Newman) received his first Lead Actor Daytime Emmy nomination in 20 years, when NATAS and the 51st annual Daytime Emmy Awards revealed who would be going for gold at the upcoming ceremony on June 7th live on CBS and streaming on Paramount+.

The iconic Braeden is a past Lead Actor recipient having won back in 1998. However, the last time Eric was nominated in the category was 2004. Throughout his enduring run on the top-rated CBS soap opera, he has now received a total of 9 Lead Actor nominations and a 10th, when back in 2002, along with Melody Thomas Scott (Nikki), they were nominated in the now defunct and then special fan voted category for “America’s Favorite Couple.”

This year, Eric’s nominated reel features scenes between Victor and Adam (Mark Grossman) where they discuss their fractured relationship as father and son, and the struggles and conflicts they have had personally and in business. In addition, Braeden also shares scenes with Melody Thomas Scott’s Nikki, where Victor voices his disappointment that the Newman children seemingly can’t get along and work together within the Newman dynasty. In Eric’s reel, the only characters who make appearances are the aforementioned Adam and Nikki.

Michael Fairman visited the set of The Young and the Restless for a special video sit-down with the legendary star exclusively for the Michael Fairman Channel.

During the conversation, Eric touched upon why he will participate in the Daytime Emmys at this point in his career due to changes in the voting procedures, his most embarrassing Emmy moment, how he feels about his fellow nominees, and that he wilattending this year’s ceremony.

Here are a few excerpts from the interview below, followed by the full video interview in its entirety.

How does it feel to get your first Lead Actor nomination in 20 years?

ERIC: You can’t help but feel very good about it. I had not submitted any stuff for more than 10 years, because I didn’t believe in the voting process. Finally, the academy had the sense to invite outsiders to widen the circle of those who vote for this. You cannot ask for objectivity when you vote from within only your company. That’s nonsense. Then, personalities play a role in who likes who. I’m very happy about the nomination, though.

You had some scenes between father and son on your nominated reel, as Victor and Adam (Mark Grossman) discuss their complex relationship and history. How was working with Mark?

ERIC: Mark Grossman is a wonderful actor. He’s a good actor.

You would up this year in a Lead Actor category that also features: John McCook (Eric, B&B), Thorsten Kaye (Ridge, B&B), Scott Clifton (Liam, B&B), and Eric Martsolf (Brady, DAYS). I think you know some of these gentlemen?

ERIC: Thorsten Kaye is a very good actor. I’ve known John McCook for 150 years, I think 140 years, maybe. And the other gentlemen, I don’t know, but I’m sure they’re all worthy of receiving the same award.

I talked to Eric Martsolf after he received his Daytime Emmy nomination, and he said he’s so honored to be in the category with you, and that his late mother would be so thrilled that he’s in the category with Victor Newman. My late mom felt the same way when she came to the set and met you years ago. For so many people, you are the guy they all want to meet.

ERIC: That’s nice. That’s really very touching to know. This medium in that sense has been wonderful. As I’ve told you before, I joined this reluctantly and signed on for three months, and here I am 44 years later. That’s very nice to know about Eric’s mother, and your mother.

What was your reaction to finding out you were nominated?

ERIC: To be very frank with you, I was very happy. I said “Oh, that’s nice.” Someone had listened because I’d complained for years about the voting system, and it was based on pure laziness as far as I’m concerned. There are 150,000 registered actors in Hollywood. You can’t tell me that you can vote only from within your company. It’s nonsense. It’s not right. You know, let other actors from the outside be judges of what they see.

I believe when you won in 1998, you didn’t go to the Emmy’s, right?

ERIC: I was doing a Shakespeare play that evening, if I recall. However, I’ve got to tell you about the most embarrassing moment. Aretha Franklin was a big fan of the show and of mine. She had asked me if I would present with her at Radio City Music Hall in New York. These producers when you accept an award, be it the Oscars or whatever it is, they will sit in the booth, and they say, “Move on, move on, move on.” They want you to get on and off stage very quickly. That should not be allowed. When you receive an award, then it should last a little. So, there’s a ticker thing in front of me, and you look at it and kept on saying, “Eric Braeden move on.” I’d hardly been there with Aretha Franklin and I wanted to thank Bill Bell (co-creator and former head writer, Y&R). We owe everything to him. We owe everything to that man’s foundation and his genius. So, I stood there with Aretha and I saw again “Eric Braeden.” So I said, “And I would like to thank Eric Braeden.” The moment I said it, I wanted to sink in to the ground. Fortunately, it was a long time ago, but I had to bring it up again because I’ll never forget it.

You’ve done so much for this industry, so much for Y&R, and the soaps. You’re an icon in it. It must be nice to get recognized by your peers, at this point in your career.

ERIC: It felt wonderful, no question. I even sent the nominating announcement to my brothers in German. I’m very happy about it, very proud of it, you know.

(INTERVIEW) B&B’s Scott Clifton Chats On His Lead Actor Emmy-Nominated Scenes, Reluctance to Submit for Several Years, and the Honor to be Named with His Co-Stars

The Bold and the Beautiful received 12 Daytime Emmy nominations for the upcoming 51st annual Daytime Emmy Awards tied with The Young and the Restless for the most of any show. Of those 12 nods, 7 were acting nominations for its cast. One of the names who made the Lead Actor race was a very familiar face to Emmy voters, and a three-time winner, Scott Clifton (Liam).

For the first-time in the shows 37-year history, three leading actors from the soap made the grade and find themselves up against each other on Emmy night: Clifton, Thorsten Kaye (Ridge) and John McCook (Eric). While Kaye won the 2023 gold statuette in the category and McCook won in 2022, the last time Clifton won in this category was 2017.

Scott also holds the Daytime Emmy record for the only actor to win in all three acting categories: ‘Younger’ in 2011, ‘Supporting’ in 2013 and then the aforementioned ‘Lead’ category. This year, also marks Clifton’s 10th Daytime Emmy nomination, having also picked up nods early in his career for his work as Dillon Quartermaine on General Hospital and as Schuyler Joplin on One Life to Live.

On Friday, April 26th, The Bold and the Beautiful held an on set celebration to honor this year’s nominated cast, crew and creatives. When B&B executive producer and head writer, Brad Bell introduced Scott Clifton, as one of the three actors from the series being recognized at Emmy time, Clifton addressed those in attendance.

Scott expressed, “I’m grateful to you, Brad Bell, and this family you created. I know at the end of my life, I’m not going to remember winning Emmys. I’m going to remember that I was nominated alongside John McCook and Thorsten Kaye. That’s what I’m going to remember, and that’s still blowing my mind, on the shoulders of giants doesn’t do it justice. So thank you, for that one.”

Following the acknowledgements, Michael Fairman TV caught up with Scott to gain some insight into what scenes he submitted on his Emmy reel, how he feels being back in the Emmy competition an, and more. Here’s what he shared below.

What scenes did you submit that landed you this Lead Actor nomination?

SCOTT: When Hope (Annika Noelle) and Liam come back home from Rome. It’s just two episodes in a row. That’s all it was, which was new for me. I’ve never really submitted a reel like that. But, it’s where Liam confronts Hope about kissing Thomas (Matthew Atkinson). It’s a side of Liam I don’t think, at least any Emmy voters have seen before where he’s just an asshole. Of course, he’s hurt and he is angry and he feels betrayed. But, he is sort of toying with Hope, almost. And then it turns into this somewhat cruel interrogation scene. Annika was incredible. It wouldn’t have worked without her performance.

Photo: JPI

It was the scene where Liam is pushing Hope to admit she kissed Thomas, going “C’mon, say it, Hope! Say it with me?”

SCOTT: Correct. Liam’s going, “I want you to say it. You say it.” That’s somewhat in the middle of the reel, and there was just sort of this lead up to that. It ends with Hope kind of pleading and begging to Liam, saying, “I’m sorry. I don’t know what came over me. I still love you.” Liam’s still emotional, but he is saying, “I don’t know how that could be true.” That’s just kind of where it ends. I hadn’t planned on submitting anything. It wasn’t like I was submitting because I thought I had a good year going,”Now, which scenes do I find?” I had multiple people here that I trust, Eva Basler (VP Communications and Talent Relations, B&B) and Rachel Herman (Associate Producer, B&B), come up to me and say, “Just submit those scenes, please.”, I said, “okay.” And I did, and then this happened, which blew me away.

Did you think that, perhaps, would never receive a nomination again in your role as Liam?

SCOTT: I kind of thought the whole ‘Emmy nominations’ were over for me. They gave me three already.

Photo: NATAS

And, you hold the record for the only actor win in the Younger, Supporting and Lead categories.

SCOTT: I know, and now one of those categories doesn’t exist anymore, and that’s a bummer. And then, after that third one, I didn’t get nominated for like five years or something like that.

But in those five years, did you still submit yourself, though?

SCOTT: I fought hard not to because I wanted to give everybody a break and disappear for a while. And that comes from a place of like support and encouragement, but the show really wanted me to submit every year, even when I didn’t feel like I had anything. My argument was, this is a mistake. Emmy voter time is valuable and they don’t want to see something that you’re not totally proud of, and I don’t want to create resentment about me or the show. I would wager to say I was right. Then finally, the last two years, the show said, “OK, fine, you don’t want to submit, you don’t have to submit”. And then this year, the Emmy voters gave me the nomination. I feel good about that.

In the scenes you submitted, Liam wasn’t a doofus. He stood up for himself in it, which was good. He wasn’t going to lay down and let Hope just run over him with her betrayal.

SCOTT: We’ve seen kind of the vulnerable Liam, we’ve seen Liam scrambling to be heard, but he was in control throughout all these scenes. That’s a side that I had not played much before, and that the Emmy voters certainly haven’t seen me do.

Photo: JPI

Now, who do you root for yourself, John McCook or Thorsten Kaye since B&B holds three of the five slots in the Lead Actor in a Daytime Drama Series this year?

SCOTT: Oh, God. If any one of us gets it, that would be fantastic. Think about it. In terms of game theory, the value in getting an Emmy nomination is that you have a chance of winning an award for the show, right? The more we can get nominations, the more awards we can win. Those are awards for the show. That helps with ratings, it helps with the contract with the network. It’s all good. It inspires Brad to write more. So, I don’t care, honestly, but we have a three out of five chance of getting the show another Lead Actor Emmy which is huge. So, I’m rooting for any one of us.

Who did you first tell that you were Emmy-nominated?

SCOTT:  I was with my girlfriend, Elle. I was getting out of the shower and I’ve got like a towel barely around me and I got a phone call from Eva Basler. Then, Elle, she just saw the look on my face, and she could only hear my side of it, but she was trying to figure out what was going on. Then, I got off the phone and she went, “Did you just get nominated for Emmy?” And I said, “Yeah, I think I did.”

Make sure to tune-in to the 51st annual Daytime Emmy Awards live on CBS and streaming on Paramount+ beginning at 8pm ET/ delayed on the west coast.

Now below, check out some of the moments from the scenes that Scott included in his Emmy-nominated where Liam confronts Hope about her betrayal of kissing Thomas in Rome. Then, let us know, will you be rooting for Scott to take home the Lead Actor Emmy this year? What did you think about his nominated performance? Share your thoughts in the comment section.
