ABC Daytime Prez, Brian Frons interviewed on Why he canceled AMC & OLTL!

While Brian Frons, the President of ABC Daytime joked that he “pre-entered the witness protection program prior to today’s events”, the decision maker who just made daytime history by “killing” One Life to Live and All My Children in the same day, spoke exclusively to Deadline.com on his why the decision to ax both soaps at this time.   Here are a few excerpts!

Frons stated to journalist, Nellie Andreeva: “A year ago, we started to look at our projections where the ratings for the soaps would go,” he said. When those projections came in pretty discouraging, the network began to aggressively develop replacement shows, 15 of them. Four of the 15 were picked up to pilot: The Chew, The Revolution and two others, a talk show and a dating show. Originally, the idea was to cancel only one daytime drama. But “the way the ratings developed and  the pilots turned out, the ratings developed negatively and pilots developed positively, so we decided to make a bigger shift. The call to go ahead with canceling a daytime soap was made a couple of weeks ago, while the final decision to axe both AMC and OLTL was made within the past week. I wanted to do shows that were unusual for daytime. What’s happening now is people are looking for information to make their lives better, they’re obsessed about what they eat and they’re obsessed with weight. It probably doesn’t hurt that the new shows are also much cheaper to produce than the two soaps they are replacing.”

Apparently, Frons informed Deadline.com, that there was a brief discussion about a year ago to combine the two soaps into one, bringing together some of the best characters from both series, but that did not occur.  Now with GH soon to be the only ABC soap, don’t expect AMC’s Erica Kane to come into GH.  Frons noted, “It’s hard to envision Erica anywhere else but Pine Valley.”

So what do you think about Frons’ rationale for replacing OLTL and AMC? Let us know!

the man needs to rot in a really hot place.. how evil is he.. he up rooted amc and took it to California. knowing he was going to cancel it. we dont want another cooking show. we dont need another fat people show. And as for classing abc soaps with Y&R. we are abc not them…

There are celebs out there who follow the soaps. And i just have to say to the fans if Frons thinks times are hard.. wait to the fans boycott Disney and abc. by not buying any of their products. Not buying from sponsors who advertise with them . You Mr.Frons need to be fired.. and that needs to be now… maybe oprah or the donald can step in and help. Maybe another net work will pick up the shows and i hope you suck eggs when it happens.

This has really been a very sad sad thing for ABC to do! As most people have done I grew up on AMC. I look forward to it at the end of everyday. The show is like family and they are friends to each other and some even become family. I think the amount of notice you have given both soaps is WRONG! The amount of time these people have given to us to give them only 6months and a year to find new jobs is totally unfair! I hope that rumor that Oprah may pick up these shows would be wonderful and a Godsend!

Thank you for all the memories!

ABC/DISNEY needs to fire Brian Frons, not only has he ruined the stellar reputation that Agnes Nixon and the producers of AMC and OLTL , but also the reputation of Disney – a company that is supposed to be about family, friends and all positive things – how will they explain the jobs (actors, writers, directors, make up, hair, crew , production crew, post production crew, editors, extras – all together thousands of people out of work).

how can ABC/Disney save money by cancelling both shows when both shows have multiple year contracts for dozens of actors and producers – that will still have to paid – even though there is no job for them – they get paid until their contracts expire – how stupid is Brian ? better yet – how stupid of ABC to keep him there ? He has ruined ABC Daytime – the only show worth watching is THE VIEW and now it too should be boycotted –ALL DAYTIME AT ABC should be boycotted -period until Brian Frons is fired !

If the shows were doing so bad, his job should have been to replace producers and writers the minute he thought the shows were in trouble – you cannot attract viewers if you continue to let the show hurt with some bad story lines.

God bless Gloria Monty – I wish she were alive – she could have saved both shows like she saved GENERAL HOSPITAL back in the ’70’s when ABC was threatening to cancel GH.

I wish Capital Cities would have never sold to Disney – Disney and Frons are like cancer ——

FIRE BRIAN FRONS – and his lover on the low – JILL FAREN PHELPS – THATS THE ONLY REASON GH IS STILL ON THE AIR.

ABC is in for a shock – its all downhill if they take the soaps of the air. Poor business decision.
I will never watch ABC again…I am switching now for the evening news and will only watch AMC & OLTL .
He should be fired just for contemplating this & when ABC does poorly it should be his job on the line.

He ruined the shows on purpose.. he had an agenda all along . He is trying to make the show tank…

While I am sure Frons and his staff could ultimately care less what we ABC Soap fans say or want, as it is all only about the $$$$ (which I get to a degree), if we all stay true to our word and honestly not watch ABC programming day or night, that will be one huge chunk of TV Viewership gone, and cheaper programming or not, they will feel the huge loss for sure. The only hour of the entire day and evening that ABC will have my patronage will be to watch General Hospital. Now I watch many evening ABC shows, that I will no longer care to continue watching. Clearly, the powers that be think that we ABC soap fans are just upset “for now”, but believe me, after watching all three of these wonderful ABC soaps with very talented actors and actresses for the last 30 plus years, my mind WILL NOT change. Other than tivoing General Hospital, I am finished with ABC for good. I am so sorry to see this terrific genre slowly going off into the sunset – very sad. The three hours a day of soap viewing (actually tivoing and watching on the weekend) was my escape from the daily grind, and watching a talk show would never provide that same escape. I wish all of ther soap stars and crew much success in their future endeavors, and I hope to see them all crop up on TV again!

Everything Brian Frons says is BS. The cancelation of all three soaps was something he planned at beginning of his tenure at ABC. Canceling 2 major soaps in one day is a little too convenient and suspect for my liking. Why lie to casts and crews of both AMC and OLTL. Casts and crews of both shows are clearly and unfairly out of jobs. What about their families? In this industry, no one know when or where your next job opportunity is coming from. Not fair to either cast and crew to leave them tied a show that you already know is getting canceled. Bad move by Frons and ABC.

      April 14, 2011 at 10:22 pm

He’s been working on killing soap viewership for years! He’s been told what we want for as long as he’s been there, but he has never once listened to Soap fans. Worse, the parent company has never questioned his motives or what kind of feedback he’s getting. And now he’s screwed with hundreds of people who have worked their butts off for ABC and Disney for YEARS! And he’s going to take down a couple magazines and many people who worked for the publishing houses, because there won’t be enough work for them.
If they don’t retract this decision, I won’t be watching anything on ABC Daytime and only one hour a week at night (Castle).

        April 19, 2011 at 7:41 pm

You could probably watch Castle on Hulu, online or DVD…

      • Miffy

        April 20, 2011 at 3:33 pm

Here’s where the problem lies: most of you aren’t committed to do a real boycott, which means NOTHING of ABC or Disney. Instead, you say, “Well, I’ll still watch Castle”. Whether that watching is online or on Hulu, ABC and Disney still benefit. If you’re not committed to boycotting EVERYTHING, then the boycott will have no effect.

Mr. Frons’ myopic perception of the situation is disheartening. He stated that he wanted something “unusual” for daytime. Well, One Life To Live has historically been one of the most entertaining, educational television programs on television.

OLTL has adopted a lead role in catapulting relevant social situations and ideas to the forefront of American awareness. Topics such as homosexuality, bullying, abortion, multiple personalities, suicide, addiction and countless others have been portrayed in extremely winning, enlightening fashion.

This is what American viewers need … not another reality show or self-help program designed to heighten our personal anxieties. Mr. Frons, you really BLANKED the pooch.

      April 14, 2011 at 10:27 pm

You’re totally right, Lew! Anyone who believes Frons sincerely tried to save soaps is kidding themselves. He has never understood Soaps, the people who watch them, or why we like them. He tried to make them what he thought they should be, and as soon as he did, they started struggling and failing. He hates what we love and he seems to think that he can make us like his crappy programming, if he keeps telling the same lies over and over again. He should have been fired years ago, but he must have something really bad on somebody to keep his job this long!

I think he is an absolute jerk!!! After having these soaps that have gone from one generation to another it is an outrage. Who the heck is obsessed with their weight and what they eat? whitey? I know we aren’t. There are more than enough shows to talk about peoples weight and what they eat. This is why we have wonderful people with professions that can actually help people with their situations individually! hummm I think they are called DOCTORS. You can actually schedule an appointment with a NUTRITIONIST that can teach and train you for your need. You have Dr. Oz, Dr. Phil, Oprah, Maury etc, etc to teach all this. Do we need more? Heck NO!!! Are you thinking about your audience… I don’t think so. If you did you would consider ALL the elderly that look forward to watching these soaps as well as the rest of us. Once again, I say… your a Jerk to put it nicely.

why is it that I make a comment and you come back with a rewrite of what I supposedly said and then write at the bottom “do not reply to this.” I don’t think that TNT, TBS, OR A&E need any junk on their networks. They have pretty good programs. They don’t need crap. You could clean up all the comments you want to but, it does not include the proper attitudes we as a people do want to get across. Our expressions to what the JERK is doing, is what we feel!

I watched these shows with my Gransmother, God rest her soul, and have fondest memories of these times.Thank You Frons for taking these memories away from others. WE, the viewers, the PEOPLE that pay your revene through purchasing from your sponsors are not happy. Maybe boycotting your sponsors will show them what we think of your poor decision making process. It appears that you forget to look at the consequeses. Sadly, you have shown that you do not respect the viewers of these 2 shows or have a clue what your viewers want. You have lost another viewer. Kudos on slowly bringing ABC to it’s knees.

What an idiot…..been watching OLTL and AMC since I was 12 – the same year AMC came on the air.

It’s the same old song and dance…lets SAVE money and cancel an expensive to produce show and put on in it’s place more of the same drivel we can get on The Dr’s or one of the other shows of that nature.

I know there’s a petition out there to save OLTL….but from what I’ve seen of shows on other networks is, it wont make a bit of difference.

What WILL impact them is to start watching, from here on out, both shows online…..hit them in their pocketbook….cuz make no mistake they need the ad revenue now more than ever, because when the new shows start no one will be watching or recording for later…they’ll all be recording the same shows they always have.

Sadly, Brian Frons will keep his job until the network falls to last in the ratings war for daytime TV.

Our HOPE might be in finding way for cable networks to pick both these soaps up and keep them alive for their viewing faithful.

Just great stories to take you away on a little trip for a while each day.

Once I read that SoapNet would be off the air next year, and there are different platforms to view soaps, I really wondered what was going to happen to AMC and OLTL.

So, the AMC move to LA was for naught. What a waste of time! And was not given enough time to rebound. Sorry for all those actors who relocated.

OLTL, I thought was in better shape, obviously not with the best, recent storylines. But let me add the KISH storlyline was ABORTED, probably by Fron. I felt betrayed and cheated when an honest story was pulled from underneath us. So in short, the handwriting has been on the wall for sometime. If we write in (which some recently did), does it go anywhere other than the trash? Instead, we will be forced fed more realty shows; CBS; “The Talk” is awful; so ABC will have three hours of squawking if GH remains in the same timeslot. I will not be watching. Sorry but that continous GH mob storyline has always disturbed me. So Mr. Frons, you made a difficult decsion. I respectfully request you to reconsider your decison.

Can anyone tell me what planet Brian Fronz is living on that he thinks we need MORE cooking and lifestyle shows on T.V. Then again he can well afford the drugs it would take to put him on any planet.

All the unemployment etc. people need to escape for awhile each day and that is what the soaps do for people. Thanks to this idiot we all get a punch in the gut instead.

Ya we can watch a cooking show about a pork or beef roast, stewing beef, asparagus or even ground beef. For the second hour have “specialist” giving design ideas, show size 0 clothes, reasons for therapy and the best thing the FREE “guilt trip” over what we can no longer afford to cook, do or give our family and/or ourselves.

Brian and others on “Mahogany Row” obviously don’ t know their audience or what the words “NEW” and “INTERESTING” mean.

ABC – save the soaps get rid of this jerk Brian. That will be more than enough money to help especially since you got the stars to take a cut in pay in recent years.

Anyone know if there is an actual petition somewhere on line to sign? God willing someone on “Mahogany Row” will pay attention to it and change their minds.

I’m just so mad and can’t stop venting. It is that or throw up. I HATE THIS!!!!!!!!!

Other FB sites are RallyforAMC&OLTL and SaveAMCfrombeingcancelled. Also, go to Agnes Nixon’s FB page and you can get links to more of these pages. They are literally popping up like sprouts.

WHat are they doing to daytime television.Ok so the ratings have decline but most people do work and go to school and that’s where SOAPnet came in!! But now there taking that away I read last year and making an educational channel for kids uhh thats what nickelodeon and disney is for leave our soaps alone its not fair!!!

The ratings only started declining when Frons and his “agenda” took office. As much as I despise the asshat (frons), this goes much higher than him. It’s ABC/d. I refuse to believe one person had that much control to completely destroy 3 wonderful soaps, and none of the higher ups did anything to stop it. Frons completely destroyed GH for me almost 3years ago. I haven’t watched anything associated with ABC, and they have alot of affiliated stations. I t will all trickle down, and come full circle. I might suggest anyone having stock in ABC pull out, because IMO , this backlash will have consequences.

      • Melanie Harris

        April 17, 2011 at 11:51 am

BTW – Where would shows like Castle be without Nathan Fillion fans from OLTL tuning in the watch in the beginning? Where would the careers of Josh Duhmael, Vanessa Marcil, Kelly Ripa, Judith Light, etc. etc. etc. be if they had not had the opportunity to attract viewers through AMC, OLTL and GH? How much work for GMA has Cameron Mathison done lately? If he had not been an AMC staple, they could not have cast him so well on DWTS. Think of the loyal Kelly Monaco fans who made DWTS a hit it’s first year. If Frons would only think of the cross casting opportunites, he could make Daytime and Primetime huge hits.

The great new programming that will be provided by Mr. Frons will crash and burn and hopefully it will make the executives at Disney see that the problem is with their head of daytime programming. • Melanie Harris

      April 17, 2011 at 11:44 am

Tina – FYI, the Doctors and Regis are syndicated shows that air on different networks in different cities. Here, Regis airs on FOX & the Doctors air on NBC. Perhaps you should contact both shows and tell them they are going to lose viewers in your city because soap fans are boycotting all ABC affiliates. That might start a small fire under the network bigwigs.

I am a stay-home-mom who also works part time from my home. My toddlers will most likely love the new Disney Junior, but I don’t see why ABC couldn’t have found a better way to broadcast it than cancelling SoapnNet, which is unique and the ultimate home of soap lovers (and there are still many!). As if this wasn’t already a big enough disappointment, now cancelling AMC and OLTL!! This is a major setback to the soap world in general. I am aware that there is a “stigma” that goes along with viewing soap operas, that they are for women who have nothing better to do with their time than watch overdramatized fluff, they are full of B actors, etc. But that is not true! I went to school and worked for more than ten years until I became primarily a stay-at-home-mom 3 years ago at the age of 29. I was an avid soap viewer the entire time, thanks to SoapNet. As for cancelling AMC and OLTl, If it had to be one and not the other, I would have chosen to keep OLTL, as I felt David Canary was the best thing AMC had going, but I am still sad to see it go. And as for OLTL, although I do not take the problems of the world around us lightly and feel very thankful for my life and its abundance, and am aware that any form of entertainment is only a luxury, I have to say I will “mourn” the loss of this wonderful, enlightening, groundbreaking show. OLTL and its characters and actors have their own place in my heart.
As for the new shows, I don’t think they will turn out to be the great success stories that Brian Frons believes. There are too many shows like these. And they will never replicate The View. CBS has tried to do so, unsuccessfully. I hope the decision was based on other things, like budget, etc. and not just on the launch of these new shows.
I know I am just one person, but I don’t see myself tuning in to either of these if I happen to have free time during the afternoon.
I will agree that the faces of television and the entertainment industry are changing, but not necessarily for the better. A lot more shows are introduced and a lot more fail these days. Sometimes new is not better. Soap operas have been around for a long time and I say leave them alone. Soap fans are loyal and lot of them won’t watch the new shows out of spite. I had held out hope that someone would buy SoapNet or start a new network of the same sort. But now that the soap world has lost two more shows, I guess that is not likely. Surely there is a better solution. Why couldn’t they take the shows on hiatus for a while to save money? Or, cut the new shows back a few days a week? I would love to give Brian Frons a piece of my mind, but as that is not likely to happen, nor is he likely to care, I will just hope the failure of his new line-up results quickly in his dismissal from ABC.

    April 14, 2011 at 10:08 pm

i cannot understand how Frons can say the storylines weren’t relevant. Especially with OLTL – it constantly, and consistently – received praise from the media re: the subject matter and storylines it tackled. Both AMC and OLTL were also consistently lauded for the diverse casting choices. It’s not only the actors who will be out of work, it’s the local crew people, the writers, the makeup/wardrobe people – and let’s not forget the trickle-down effect this is creating on published media. ABC Soaps in Depth can’t report on only one soap. The other soap mags will probably reduce their staffs as well since there will be 2 less soaps to report on.

I stopped watching The View 2 years ago because I couldn’t stand the nonsensical squawking and constant arguing. Those women lost credibility a long time ago (when they were barely credible to begin with). More “lifestyle” shows? There’s a cable channel for everything now – the last thing “people want” are more lifestyle shows!

I don’t know about the rest of the nation, but where I live, Oprah is also on ABC. So not only is Frons pulling the plug on 2 consistent-viewing shows, but the Oprah show will be off the air here in May. So that’s a 3-hour block of time for ABC to fill with….”lifestyle” shows?!?

And yes, I agree with the ongoing sentiment that GH probably isn’t too far behind. Maybe not within the near timeframe, but there will probably be an announcement some time next year.

It’s a sad day – and an impactful one – even the national news had the double cancelations as a headline.

    • KathyNYC

      April 15, 2011 at 4:11 am

The storylines weren’t relevant? People are more interested in their health that storylines that were not relevant? Who the heck wrote the storylines and approved them? ABC and Brian Frons!! If AMC and OLTL were no longer relevant to the viewers, look in the mirror ABC. Who’s fault is that? Stop blaming the viewers.

If ABC wanted to keep these soaps and increase ratings, they could have done a much better job with them..instead the ran them into the ground with horrible writers, propping their favorites (no matter what the audience wanted) and telling stories that made little sense and showed NO respect for the history of the characters or show.

Instead Brian Frons uses the viewers as a scapegoat for his failings – or maybe this was the plan all along. It’s staggering to me that Brian Frons still has a job unless ABC wanted him to do this all along.

Well I have already given up ABC news and GMA and barely watch anything on ABC at all. It won’t be too much of a stretch to give up the rest.

This news is horrendous. Brian Frons had this in the wind and his mind long ago. I think he was waiting for the right time according to him to shut these fine soaps down. He is everything all you fans have been saying. I do feel sorry for all the people From AMC who picked up and moved so they could save their jobs. Relocating their entire families. They made the ultimate sacrifice. Now, where do they go. They are all in limbo. OLTL has the finest actors and writers In daytime soaps. I feel terrible about all these people. Some of them may never find new jobs.OLTL has really had the best stories and outstanding subjects that should appeal to everyone. This story about bullying is so important. Many families have been affected with their children suffering and feeling they can’t tell anyone. I say Bravo to the writers for always tackling difficult subject matter. For all the fans I say ,we should be grateful we had these soaps to put in our memory books.

Mr. Frons is a pompous network bully who cares less about the American public he was hired to entertain. He has wanted to get rid of the Daytime Drama since day one often allowing poor writing to destroy the history and credibility of both of these Iconic shows. Mr. Frons does not realize the soap fans are still out there… even tho some of stopped watching they will speak up and voice an opinion. People will have the final say when ABC slips further down in the ratings. This did not happen with Guiding Light or As the World Turns since that initial audience had died off… These two soaps belonged to the baby boomers who are still around. Both at the same time is ballsy even for a bully like Frons. IM sure ABC will regret the decision and the powers that be over Mr. Frons will not be pleased. I for one will no longer watch the ABC network. It means that much… its the principle of the thing and the disrespect for the viewer that insults me. No more View.. No more Regis…. No more Erica Kane… No more Oprah… ABC daytime will crumble and I will watch it fall with glee.

Turn off ABC and switch to other Networks to watck. Mr Frons has no reality on programming of daytime soaps. why did he move show to california to cancell it?
how stupid he is .lets hope this mistake take ABC to the ratings of the bottom pile.

Rodney – I agree! Disney had made millions with soap-themed events at their parks. They also have product placement in AMC & OLTL. They should extend an olive branch to their sponsors and do more (although it annoys me, I would accept the sacrifice to keep the shows on air). This is a BIGGG mistakee!! n I hopee no one watches the shows that are replacing OLTL and AMC… Brian Frons is money hungryy and i assure you he will regret this when his ratings are soo low for the new shows. I mean seriously who needs a cooking show?? If we wanted to watch that we would watch the food network.. n as far as that health show goes, the reason we watch soaps is cause we dont want to be reminded of serious medical problems. Soaps help you forget about your real life problems for an hour of the day. but i guess we have to be reminded of them because of”BRIAN FRONS”!! n BTW your not gonna be saving money by replacing these shows with less expensive ones your gonna be losing money cause no ones gonna watch them!! IT TAKES MONEY TO MAKE MONEY!! IDIOT!!!!

Hre we go with more daytime crap… while I stopped watching AMC almost a year ago OLTL had much better story lines. Here we go with some of the reality crap that is nerve wrecking….every network in the world is coming up with a bunch of crap. You should have fired the writers with no imagination. NOT THE SHOWS. They continue to milk a story line instead of letting it be over and getting on with more interesting. ABC the network will take a storyline and run it for over a year. Instead of allowing the storyline to end. You can miss a month of the ABC story lines, watch the show and see they are still running the same storyline as the month before. Hint Hint check out CBS B&B get a clue. I’m done with ABC as far a daytime. Do you reallly think viewers are going to stand by while you put another stupid show on or more news. Heck the NEWS doesn’t report news Which I very seldom watch, I read my news on the internet. The networks idea of news is reporting which celebrity or sports person did something stupid. That is those people’s personal lives. Which is not news by the way. I hope everyone that watches daytime stories, boycotts your time slots for both AMC and OLTL. Brian really…I hope you never have to worry about your position. These cancellation are a horrible idea.

  63. Chris

    April 15, 2011 at 6:23 am

First and foremost I would like to say that I do understand the need to produce something that is much cheaper because of the economic world we live in, however what Mr. Frons has over looked is the fact that even though everyone doesn’t jump to post what they think about the shows online or actively support the show in other aspects other than tuning in that there is a large fan base and that since the current changes they are making to ABC with other shows they are losing a lot of people who watch the station he works for, and because of this ill informed decision he and the others who decided this was an okay thing to do.

I know General Hospital is next if it has not already been cut that is, and they are just waiting to let everyone know, but once they finish what they are doing I’m totally done with ABC; you have all let me and the rest of the longtime fans down. I know the need to want to put your mark and make a name for yourself is important, but that could have easily been done by seeking out writers with something original not old dated story lines that repeat themselves, hell I’d come work for you for free just to write some new interesting things and keep the shows on.

The bottom-line to all of this is the fact that ABC to me was once a channel unlike the rest because of the content and direction, but now it is going to be another clone so I’m done with ABC unless they choose to correct this grievous error of judgment.

Networks replace shows so fast these days it makes my head spin. I rarely ever watch a show in the first season anymore for fear I’ll hooked and the network will cancel it because of the ratings. These two soaps have been on for decades. They have established fans and are gaining new ones everyday. Our rating system is flawed. The only way to truly know what every person is watching is either to have a nielsen box in every home in the country or have the nielsen company send out the phamplets to everyone all the time. Its ridiculous to assume what age group is watching a show based on this outdated system. In 2011, I had hoped someone would have come up with a better way to do the tv ratings. I never thought this would affect two shows like AMC and OLTL. This is a big mistake by ABC they will never have two shows like them again (except GH). These soap continue to win awards and bring the network recognition. As for younger viewers I’ve been since I was in Junior High school and Im 28 years old.

Every word slithering out of his mouth his BS. I swear he is so full of crap he could fertilize all of Chicago all summer long. I WANT AMC AND OLTL NOT THE CHEW OR SOME CRAP YOU FEEL LIKE YOU WANT TO PULL OUT OF YOUR ASS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am done with ABC (‘cept GH) after my my soaps are cancelled! It is unacceptable that they relocate all these actors and their families to the west coast and then give them this notice.
I sincerely hope all the daytime fans follow through and boycott ABC, especially from 1-3 PM. You can count on me, that’s for sure. Fron’s is an idiot.

WTF is this guy thinking??????????? The last thing I want to watch is another cooking, fashion, dieting show on tv. There is enough of those shows already on TV that the last thing we need is more shows like that!!!!!!!!! I have been watching AMC and OLTL for 26 years and they are like family to me. So if this shows are taking of the air I will no longer support any other show on ABC!!!!!!!!! Other shows will suffer for it!!!!!!!!!! BOYCOTT ABC!!!!!!! BOYCOTT ABC!!!!!!!!! BOYCOTT ABC!!!!!!! BOYCOTT ABC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Frons is an idiot! Boycott all ABC shows except GH!! We have to stick by the one soap left on ABC and not give them a reason to cancel that one. BOYCOTT everything else. Write to advertisers and tell them your boycotting ABC. Advertising is where they get the money. We need to send a message.

Who cares about watching shows about weight and health. Eat right, exercise. Period. These shows were a way to take an hour out of your life and relax. It doesn’t matter to Mr. Frons because he still gets his 6 figures a year and we are left with crappy programming. Yay….

  81. Rosa

    April 15, 2011 at 10:59 am

I agree with everyone that Brian Frons is an ahole !!!! It is a disgrace that AMC &
OLTL is being cancelled after all the years the shows have been on.
I am sure this was discussed at a lunch with his mentors, Fred Silverman, Michael Eisner and all previous Program Execs that have made ” stupid decisions in the past”
about programing that should have still been on.
Let’s all hope that the “ahole” Frons and his cronies are not discussing more realty
shows and comedy shows with laugh tracks.
The phrase ” What goes around, comes around, good and bad !!!!!
Eventually,he will get his !!!! and we can all sit back and enjoy it !!!!

This is wrong on so many levels, first and foremost he’s not thinking about us the viewers and secondly where did he get his demographic information? He has NO FREAKIN clue. He sits up in his ivory tower and thinks he knows all about what people want. I want to thank Mr. Frons for destroying all of my happy childhood memories of spending time with my grandma and watching All my Children and One Life to live. I got to shut out real life for 2 hours a day and I got to spend time with my grandma just us girls. Mr. Frons you are breaking up family traditions!!! How many women out there have passed down this tradition?

    • Debbie

      April 15, 2011 at 11:36 am

I feel the same way. I watched it with my grandmother and years later watched while my kids had their naps. We bought a VCR back when they were really a luxury because I had to tape AMC to go to work. Now it’s become a much needed break from the scary times we live in and this dope is allowed to make a stupid decision like this. I’m done with ABC and their sponsors.

      • Melanie Harris

        April 17, 2011 at 11:28 am

Debbie – I feel exactly the same. The SOLE reason for my first VCR purchase was to tape my soaps when I was at work. I was thrilled because when I was in college, I would have to schedule my course work around them at least a few days a week. : ) I am done with ABC, GMA, all prime time programs and their sponsors. I also plan to start watching the Young and the Restless & the Bold & Beautiful. It is my sincere hope that when the CBS numbers soar and ABC Daytime tanks, someone will see the light and resurrect our beloved “stories”.

This guy needs to be bakeracted and locked up and have his head examined. I don’t know where he is getting his ratings from. If they cancel AMC and OLTL they will loose lots of abc viewers even from the other shows they. I hope you guy who interviewed him get these messages to him. If they cancel the shows I will no longer watch abc. So everyone keep up with emailing and calling abc.

I don’t watch either one that much. But what I have seen once a while.Still it sucks I mean come on all he is giving you is plain and stupid exuces when we dang well know it is the cost of the producing these soaps.I mean lets get real her people it is plain as day.I am sorry I not sure were he got the idea of people wanting to know about losing weight if it is from a primetime show that NBC produces. That is plain and simple primetime not daytime ratings I think they just better think this again.I am sorry they will need to compare rating if this truly the reason. With these so-called shows people want to see compare with to soaps that has produce the finest actors who now are some of our major movie actors. This whole thing is just plain crazy.

How can you take away a part of someones life, that has been there for over 30 years and not expect it to HURT BADLY!! I will not be watching ABC in my home, EVER again. The advertisers on ABC are going to be sorry, as I have been to many websites and seen the repercussions of this decision. It is not pretty. I am not going to take this lying down.

The weight loss and self help shows are already on…many of them! Who wants another??? The soap characters are like family to many and there is deep emotions involved. All My Children and One Life to Live do represent subjects like domestic abuse, bullying, anarexia, alochol abuse and much, much more and give into to get help. GH is an okay show but all that gangster stuff over and over gets pretty boring. I for one will boycott all ABC shows…period!

TV in general has really changed so much. Remember when you didn’t see reruns until at least mid May? Now, even shows like Desperate Housewives, Brothers & Sisters, Grey’s, they all start out big time in late September, show a couple episodes and then they disappear. Then they show a rerun or two and then a new episode. Geez, TV is even rerunning commercials from years ago. Money is the root of it all. They don’t have the money to continue making new episodes or commercials and like Mr. Frons said, it would be CHEAPER to serve his Chew then to keep the soaps on.

Why not run the soaps 4 days a week and then his Chew on one day? That way he doesn’t have to put so many people out of work and he can see if his Chew will be devoured. What kind of a name is that…Chew?

He obviously doesn’t watch much TV. If he did, he would see see there are at last 40 shows on cooking, weight loss, health, travel and all the other things that he thinks will entice viewers. These shows are on 24/7. Does he think he can compete with the cable stations that produce well researched, photographed and star-studded shows with his “cheaper” budget? Well, I hope he looses weight, gets a make over, gets cleansed and enjoys a cruise on his kayak.

When were we ever asked about what we want to see on daytime? These shows may not make the money they want. But, now we have to pay the cost so this Fons guy can make a few extra dollars.

MORE talk shows?! Really?! Taking away HUNDREDS of jobs! REALLY???!!! I believe ABC’s Brian Frons made the BIGGEST mistake ever. There are PLENTY of talk shows, not so many Soaps left. So thoroughly disappointed. I have been an exclusive ABC Soap fan since I was a teenager. Once OLTL and AMC are cancelled, I will be leaving ABC altogehter. Thanks, Brian!

Soap operas have been around longer than TV. The fact that they are shown such little respect in the industry is appalling. I acknowledge the fact that it may be cheaper to run the programs chosen in place of the soap operas, but does the end result not matter? He things the projections were low, they are going to plummet when a ridiculous dating show is put in place of a daytime drama that has generation upon generations of fans. 3 million people a day watch OLTL, does he really think that many people will stick around to watch ANOTHER talk show or dating show. Those shows are a dime a dozen and they’re mind-numbing. Will they cover hot social issues in a way that appeals to all. NOT HARDLY. All money aint good money Frons and there is nothing more profound than the realization of a bad decision made. This would be one of them. Daytime needs investing. I can see one but two at once, thats just disrespectful to the genre, the cast, the crew, and the fans. You messed up this time. What if your idea SUCKS! Huh?!?! What if?

Big Mistake. My mom age 76, myself age 51, my daughter age 16 all watch All My Children and OLT. No idea who the focus groups were..but the decision is wrong. We all will boycot any and all ABC shows if this happens. Many young actors get their start on these programs, many social issues are put in the spolight as well. ABC needs to get in touch with reall people and see we do not need nor want another cooking/food show or fitness show. We want and need our Soaps!

It really angers me that All My Children has been cancelled! I have watched and enjoyed this show for more years than I can name. Why did you spend all money to move filming to Cal. To cancel them now? It doesn’t make sense. I realize at 65 I’m not in your demographics, but my friends and me are the ones who watch and buy your products, or use to. Please reconsider what you are doing, you would make a lot of people happy if you changed your mind!

This guy must be out of his mind. I have watched OLTL since 1977 & out of the 3 It is by far the best–always has been. The people who write AMC make all the women mindless boobs & all the guys idiots so I won’t miss that. GH is the most repetitive, assinine soap written by the laziest writers & has the most pathetic cast of “actors”(except Tony Gaery, whom they have now demonized) I have ever seen. It’s the one that should be cancelled. I certainly won’t
be watching hi new cheap shows & I fervently hope that they fail. Some of the actors on OLTL have been friends of mine when I lived in that neighborhood & they were all good.

I watched the show the very first day it was on and I will watch it go out. But I will never watch the new shows and will not support anything that Disney does. Will not buy another thing. I know at least 20 other people who are doing the same thing. I don’t know that it will bring the show back but I just don’t care about a cooking show and some type of makeover show. I feel that these people were family in my home every day for over 40 years. I am going to miss all of them but most of all I’m going to miss Erica. Susan, I’ve grown up with you. Now at age 58 seeing you so many years ago for the first time I loved you then and I will always love you. She is the best. I’m so sorry to see them leave.

It’s always hard to say goodbye to something so special.

This is so wrong on many levels. Aside from being shocked and greatly saddened at this news, I am offended that ABC deems to know what I, as a long time viewer, wants to watch on TV. As others have said, there are tons of cooking/food and lifestyle type shows on TV right now. There are only so many ways to cook food or figure out your problems. Personally, I want a little escapism & less reality in my hectic life. I have watched both AMC & OLTL since they first aired, and I was in my teens. Once OLTL goes off the air, I will have no desire to watch ABC & its cheap, save money replacements! How can TPTB in the BIG city even comprehend what a regular, normal, hardworking everyday person enjoys watching?
You obviously do NOT know your audience, and more than that ..do not care about us. A heartfelt ‘Thank You’ to the wonderful casts & writers of both shows for the years they have lived in my home.

I have raised a family including grandaughter over a period of 40 years. I want a period of the day when I do not have to think about what is going on in the world and what a chef is telling me what I have to cook ,or how to decorate my home. I want to sit and relax and that is what I do when I watch OLTL. This is not part of my real world it is fantasy and as a mom you need a little fantasy in your life in order to deal with all of the reality that surrounds us every day. The thought of that little part of my day going away is very sad. Dealing with a company that deals with fantasy such as Disney it just proved to me that it is not about what is important to the audience it is the almity buck.

In January of 2012 as the end of an era becomes reality, I will never tune in to ABC for any reason whatsoever, ever. I am not alone and perhaps Mr. Frons will not have to give up expensive bourbon and illegal cuban cigars because of my viewing exit but I will feel better knowing that nothing he obtains comes from me.

I will reiterate…never, no matter what the program, I will not even DVR a program, nothing. No more Action news, no more Body of Proof, Diane Sawyer puts me to sleep any way. So this may feel like a loss for the fans, the people that work behind the scenes, the actors but in the end it is ABC taking the loss and hopefully Mr. Frons will be given his walking papers because his reality Fat Folk shows, cooking shows, whatever…I detest being told “I am obsessed” with this junk, how clueless this self important bastard is. He must be giving something “awesome” to someone powerful at ABC on the side because how he has this job, astounds me.

ABC “all ’bout cancellation” and the day is coming when it will cancel itself. You’re an idiot. Thanks for letting millions of faithful fans who helped you achieve your status in this industry know just what they and it all meant to you…nothing.

I would say we should send bars of soap to Mr. Frauds….er,,,Frons office in protest.

But,if sending bags of tea and coffee couldn’t bring the character of Ianto Jones back to “Torchwood”,what’s the point?

Well,at least it’ll free up two hours of my day when OLTL goes off the air since i won’t be watching shows that would be better off on Food Network and Discovery Fitnees & Health….or,here’s a wild thought,ABC’s own “Live Well” digital cable channel.

I have to tell Mr. Frons that I for one and I know many others will not watch those 2 crappy shows. I’m puzzled that if ABC wanted to save money that they should had fired you last month when they had the chance. They should had replaced you with someone who really cared about us and the soaps we watch for many years. You could had put both AMC and OLTL half hour each if you really wanted too. I know that both shows you claim the fans want will fail miserebly. karma will bite you in the butt and you will get fired like you did to the actors of both soaps you made jobless. No one will hire you because you have a bad reputation regarding the job you do. I can’t wait for that day.

Nothing is perfect in this life. Every soap opera has had at some point or other bad story lines, bad acting, etc. BUT overall they are entertaining, the actors and writers are very talented and they provide a little window of harmless escapism. What television does not need is more talk shows, cooking shows and heaven help us all, more REALITY shows. These are merely CHEAPER replacements to fill a time slot. The ‘shirts’ at ABC simply aren’t interested in preserving these shows. If they were, they would find a way to do it. As the old adage states, “If there’s a will, there’s a way.” One thing I’ve been wondering about: Were the sponsors unhappy with these shows; were they pulling their money out? I thought (perhaps incorrectly) that as long as a program had enough paying sponsors, that’s what counted.

    • Flo Hardin

      April 16, 2011 at 3:08 pm

from what I can figure, the more popular the shows the more money the advertisers pay for a commercial spot, neilsen ratings I suppose factor in, when the ratings are low, the sponsors either pay less money for spots, or they pull their advertising to more popular shows. Kind of like paying alot more for superbowl spots vs regular season football. Frons “agenda” has viewers so upset alot of them stopped watching, less money for the big wigs. Let the writers write, and somebody control frons and keep his frikking ass away from the writing dept.. That is to me the biggest problem with the soaps , Frons has his agenda, his favs. But that’s just my opinion, and we all know what ABC thinks of the viewers.

It takes talent to write and keep a story line going for as long as AMC & OLTL has been going. To remember who did what and to who…pure talent..Anyone can do a reality show..shoot..my 4 year old son can video all of us and make a reality show out of it..doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure that one out. ABC/Disney has put one foot in the ground by taking these two shows away..now with all our boycotting we can bury the other one..

I understand business is business, but I feel that the writers were the problem, and got away from the ingredients that made the shows so spectacular. I feel Frons and Disney did not live up to the traditions that made the shows so great. It is easy to cancel a show, but work to make it a success….and keep it successful. I have been disappointed in the writing and some of the characters in the shows as of late. But, because these shows and their actors have made ABC partially successful over the years, these shows should have gone back to their main characters, better story lines, and in keeping with what made them successful.Never, will they find actors again, the status of Susan Lucci, and Erika Slezak…..and They made lots of money for the network. I have always believed if vamped correctly, both shows would have made great prime time shows, in the tradition of Dallas and Knots Landing etc.
Will hate to see this soap era leave us, and as I said, business is business. I just believe the ones running the business do not understand their television watching fans. If I see one more make over show, or one more reality show, or one more talk show, I will pardon my french……hurl! These shows have worked for years, and still can, with the right investments of time tried stories and vamping, they would still be a hit….they gave up on the shows way too soon……I wish all the actors and crews of these great shows, the very best. God bless them all.

Frons was the script consultant so the crappy storylines were his intentions all along so that he could blame the ratings for the reason they were cancelled. ABC just digged their own grave.

I appreciate Mr. Traylor and his comments here. While there are many rants, screams of outrage, tears, even some swear words and some pretty strong language his comments while calm are firm and logical. I guess the strong words show how upset everyone is about the cancellation of All My Children and One Life to Live; how it was done and how the soaps have been in trouble because the people tending to them did not look after them including improving the writing and storylines.

Did it have to happen is the question many may be asking. No, if Mr. Frons and company had dealt with the problems earlier – storylines and such. I am not sure if irrational behaviour is the answer though it does show the outrage of the public.

I have to add the way the cancellations occurred also left a chill. After trying to reduce the fears of cancellation, sending letters to actors, moving AMC to California uprooting families and all and then whether it be unlucky or not having an insensitive guy like Mario Bartoli look rather smug about his opportunities with the cancellation of soaps allow a cook show well things just didntè get any better. Some of the jokes about Mr. Bartoli though were not very nice or flattering but sadly his comments on tv did not show him a particularly compassionate man (though the comments that he may be 3times the size of Susan Lucci his value as an entertainer would be at best one tenth of her was nasty.). Poor OLTL found it had just a few months to live via videolink; Erika Sleazak and Susan Lucci were not even given the courtesy of knowing in advance. Things just could not get much worse. Maybe if Mr. Frons offered to take a pay cut or something. I just hope no one commits suicide over this (I am assuming the fans will be okay but I am talking about some actor or crew member whose life has been devastated.

Another point I would add; the end of these soaps and in particular AMC and Erica Kane is that a cultural icon is being lost.

Before the story is ended for these soaps let us hope there are no other casualties – other than perhaps Mr. Frons and his job. Sadly he has to go!

I am sickened with this man and his band of thieves….they took away two of the best daytime shows ever, as far as I am concerned and I will never watch daytime t.v. again. I hope his ratings tank!!! I want the shows back! I wish someone like Oprah would see the value in these daytime dramas and pick them up. Her ratings would soar! Very upset and mad at ABC/Disney. 🙁

I have no intention of watching either of those replacement shows. The TV is too full of those junk shows now. I want a show that has a story with it such as the soaps. I won’t be watching ABC any longer after One Life to Live goes off the air next January. I do not like General Hospital at all. His decision sure does add to the unemployment rate by cancelling both shows Why did they even bother to move All My Children to California if they were going to cancel it and uproot all those people? Stupid decisions will cost them a lot of fans.

This is t he saddest news Ive heard in a long time. The amount of food shows on tv are enough already. If housewives arent home to watch soaps then they arent home to watch reality food stuff either. Children arent going to watch reality food shows. Put back the soaps there are enough reality junk on tv these days and not enough real life stuff.

Fons is in La La land. He knows nothing of the viewers of the Soaps. since many of the viewers are long time viewers they will never accept more silly talk shows. Frons’ actions will kill ABC daytime. No need to even have a TV. Younger viewers will not watch, older viewers will protest. The fans have been lied to and manipulated – this is not forgivable. ABC and Disney will become hated …. this is not a way to handle the public. What point is there to have a station or any programing when viewers are indoctrinated with the gross disregard by the station’s leadership. Better by far to fire Frons and repair the damage to the viewers trust. It makes much more sense to refocus the advertisers to the demographics. Soaps should sell products that cater to glamor, beauty, romance, family, society, loyalty, passion, love, personal growth, talent, fun, good storytelling, drama, etc. The public deserves better. Get real ABC / Disney!!!!

Brian Frons is a short-sighted idiot. The loyal viewers of AMC & OLTL WILL NOT watch the new lifestyle shows. Not only will ABC have to replace these lost viewers, they will have to attract millions of new viewers to make up this deficit and justify their
illogical decision. I would like to know how Mr. Frons comes by the numbers he used to make this decision. I do not believe he is counting all the people who DVR or TiVo these shows OR the viewers who do not watch on ABC, but wait to see the shows on SoapNet. If he would add these numbers together, he would see a different picture.
This poor move will come back to bite him & ABC in their hind quarters and they will become the new network “goats” in the same way that NBC lost credibility after their ill advised Jay Leno debacle. The words “pity the fool” never rang more true than in this situation. : (

Unbelievably ignorant decision or more accurately arrogant…to assume that television needs more redundant, superficial food and/or health reality programing is naive and unsophistocated as well as terribly uninformed…OTL provides a needed distraction from the harsh difficulties of daily life as well as offering a subtle awareness for current social issues…although there may be other programming I may have chosen to view I no longer can support ABC and will refrain from supporting this network in any way….this is likely to be a very regretable decision for ABC…

YOU KNOW THERE ARE STILL PLENTY OF VIEWERS OF THESE WONDERFUL SOAPS, THAT SHOULD MATTER, AND SO SHOULD ALL THE TALENTED ACTORS!!! NO ONE WANTS TO SEE THESE NEW STUPID SHOWS, WE HAVE ENOUGH SHOWS THAT ARE JUST LIKE WHAT HE’S REPLACING OUR BELOVED SOAPS WITH!!! WHY WOULD PEOPLE WANNA WATCH THESE TYPES OF SHOWS IN THE DAYTIME, WHY AT ALL? THESE SOAPS HELP US FORGET REALITY FOR A LITTLE WHILE, IT’S NICE!! I HAVE BEEN WATCHING OLTL SINCE I WAS A CHILD, THANKS TO MY MOM 🙂 I WILL NOT WATCH ABC EXCEPT FOR WHILE THE SOAPS ARE STILL ON, DON’T WATCH MUCH ANYWAY SINCE THEY NO LONGER SHOW ANYTHING WORTH WATCHING EXCEPT THE SOAPS!!! ABC & BRIAN WILL BOTH REGRET THIS DECISION, I GUARANTEE THEY WILL GET LESS RATINGS, VIEWERS, THEY BETTER REALIZE MILLIONS OF US ARE NOT JOKING WHEN WE SAY THEY WILL BE BOYCOTTED!!!

This is an insult to loyal viewers who have watched their shows for DECADES. I started watching ABC daytime soaps in the early 80’s when I was a kid. I literally grew up watching these shows. Any marekting study can be manipulated to say whatever they want so it is meaningless. They probably pre-determined the sample with the end result of what do you want the # to be.. . They are opting for cheap to produce junk programming. None of these new shows have a chance of lasting long term. I wish the decision would be reconsidered. I just think if they cared what their viewers wanted this would not have happenned. Hope they lose millions on this awful decision.

Dear Mr. Frond, I really hope you will reconsider your decision to cancel One Life. I realize reality shows are very popular right now,but while they appeal to a large audience they don’t appeal to all of us. I know not everyone has grown up with these soaps, but a lot of us have . I ask that you please consider this before making your final decision in January. Thank You very much.

My sister and I have watched amc and oltl since we were in school with my mother. I am very very unhappy and even if they would combine the two programs would be better than axing something that I know a lot of people enjoyed. This has been part of our lives since erica came to pine velley. I will boycot abc and I think there is enough
of those dumb talk shows now.. Leave our soap opras alone… I am 64 and my sister is 61 and we love our soaps and our characters bring alot to help people who have problems. please reconssitter removing our programs or I hope someone else will pick them up… thank you pat h

  140. Carolyn

    April 18, 2011 at 10:38 am

I have been trying to understand why they would axe both shows and now it’s clear. It’s not about the ratings but about the cost of producing the shows. The new shows will be cheaper to produce. Question… If all the fans of AMC and OLTL leave ABC when the shows go off the air who is going to watch your “cheap” shows? When OLTL goes off the air ABC will never be viewed in my home again. Screw your new shows….

  141. Loddie

I do not want to see a stupid reality, talk, or food show! Does the viewers input not count in this decision. Do you think canceling our soaps will makes want to watch the NEW programming, if you think so I hate to break it to you. You are wrong, if I want to a Food program, I will watch Food network! You stated that it because the NEW programming was cheaper to produce than our soaps. I guess you won’t mind if we decide to boycott your network on how that will effect your paycheck.

  142. Kelley

    April 18, 2011 at 5:34 pm

I think that ABC is just cheap and doesn’t want to pay for real actors. If I want to watch a cooking show I will watch the food network. Why don’t they cancel The View or should be called “their opinion and no body elses”.

I have been watch AMC since college. I remembered gathering in the UC to watch with several other students. It will be missed and not replaced ever. ABC, you are dopes but what else can you expect in California.

  143. Kathie

It’s a tragic thing that you think canceling All My Children and One Life will be the answer. It’s a good thing you “jokingly” commented that you went into the witness protection because myself along with millions are truly upset with the canceling. It’s the only two soaps I watch and I have been watching AMC since 6 mos after it began. I have grown up with Erica. The two shows you are bringing in are two of the most awful shows I have heard of. I don’t do most reality shows and certainly won’t watch these. I guess I will have to watch other channels from now on.

How sad for you and the ABC family to think that you know what your fans want. I have been watching All My children for over 30 years! I can tell you that you don’t know us at all. I won’t be watching anything on ABC going forward especially more stupid cooking shows! Life is crazy busy and a chance to unwind with my favorite soap was want I wanted!

  145. Lou

    April 19, 2011 at 10:41 pm

Too bad the SOAPs are going away. They’re way better than all these so-called ‘reality shows’ being crammed our way. Not THAT long ago one needed talent to act, dance, sing, etc., to get into film and television. Now it seems any crazy can get on TV with all these waste-of-a-time Reality Shows. Just doesn’t make any sense. Should be ashamed!

Rating are a thing that are like a rollercoaster they go up and they go down. Just like everything else in this economy seems affected, so is the world of Daytime Drama. That also, does not mean, ABC should pull the plug on Daytime Dramas such as these. They have long time fans, and also holding tradition w/ the network. I am sure there is some type of money issue involved here internally that would make more sense why the network would have to pull the plug on such long running TV Daytime Dramas. TRUE, as the ABC rep. stated people out there do want make thier lives better, but not with the replacements they have in place. First, THE CHEW, If I wanted to watch a show about FOOD, I am sure I can turn to the Food Network and find something similar. 2nd THE REVOLUTION, the other replacement, NOW, If I wanted info, on style, I would turn to The Style Network, NOT ABC!!! I hope we can work together as fans of the TWO daytime dramas, and give the TWO new replacements shows even WORSE Ratings than the ones for All My Children and One Life To Live.

  147. Eileen McConnell

    April 20, 2011 at 8:33 am

If ABC thinks they can put some low budget cooking show, for which there are too many already, in the time slot for AMC and get better ratings they are sadly mistaken. It won’t last very long. No AMC fan will accept a stupid cooking show to replace their beloved soap opera. I have watched AMC since 1982 and it is the way I escape the real reality of this world, the oil spills, the nucluer breakdown in Japan, etc,, etc. Now that HOOVER is cancelling their advertising with ABC, maybe this is positive proof that we soap opera fans are serious about out soaps and will hit ABC where it hurts the most, in their pocketbook. I have already stopped watching ABC, Yesterday I turned off The View and last night I stayed with CBS instead of watching Body of Proof. As far as I am concerned ABC is dead to me, and I am writting all the sponsors to say I will switch to alternate products unless they follow suit with HOOVER and that includes Disney and thei products. Am returning Disney DVD’s just recently purchased. Disney’s Annual Report says ABC ratings are down and advertising costs are up, so ABC advertisers are paying more to advertise on ABC that they are on other networks.

  148. Fran

    April 20, 2011 at 12:04 pm

I think it stinks. If the ratings are down it is because of the stories and that has to do with the writers. I have watched these shows since they came on, I grew up with these families. I am a Sr Citizen and I look forward to watching them every day and I am sure there are other Seniors homebound that do the same thing. I will not watch another food or reality show and my friends won’t either. We are going to Boycott them. How can you put all these actors out of work at a time when times are hard? Just as long as you line your pockets it’s ok?? If the stories change and get better would you reconsider not cancelling? Please???????

  149. Lisa Romano

    April 20, 2011 at 12:39 pm

This is absolutely the worst decision ever made by an ABC executive. Brian Frons should be fired immediately. Another cooking show is not needed on daytime TV and two beloved soap operas should not be replaced. How this is even being done is reprehensible and ABC should rethink their decision before they lose their faithful viewers. Sponsors should follow Hoover’s lead and pull their advertisements as well.

Brian Frons should be fired but very logical and proper reasons. Presidents and executives have to make hard decisions and undoubtedly cancelling AMC and OLTL was a tough decision that was based on many factors including finances. Execs have to make hard decisions in steering the ship. However, Mr. Frons has had several years to right the ship, to get the ABC soap operas in good shape. There were many hard decisions before the cancellations which were not made including hiring good writers and such. Mr. Frons needs to take responsibility for his role in the fall of the ABC soaps.

Furthermore, being the captain he also needs to take responsibility for the bad PR in handling the cancellations. It did not help that Mario Bartoli from the Chew hardly looked sorry the soaps were cancelled and he now had his big chance. Unfortunately, ABC did not handle the cancellation well. Poor Susan Lucci looked like a pawn and whether you liked her or not (people often confuse Lucci and her character) Lucci has been very loyal to ABC and Disney. She was treated badly yet remained classy which just makes ABC and Frons look worse. One would hope Frons tries to make the endings for these two soaps back to their roots with good writing. One hopes that in fairness to a just world and Lucci she is offered a new role on tv – maybe on prime time. Mr. Frons should not be fired because he cancelled AMC and OLTL. He should be fired for letting these soaps fall in a position that they needed to be cancelled. Frons should further be fired if ABC loses Susan Lucci after over four decades of loyalty. He should have to join the ranks of unemployed like the cast and crew of these shows – the captain, the leader has to take responsility for not being able to steer the ship to safety. Think about it. You could have a good coach for a NHL hockey team but if the team loses say good bye coach. Good bye Brian Frons; you had a chance and you blew it. So go CHEW on that Mr. Frons!

I am all too familiar with saving shows that you want to keep on but I truely thing that soaps are a thing of the past. If they aren’t making money, from a business stand point, they have to let it go with ratings in the gutter. Days is probably next.

Who is he kidding? He’s lying once again. He made this decision a year ago and this interview just confirms it. He made up his mind and nobody was going to change it. The man ruins everything he touches. He came to ABC in 2006 think back people to what SoapNet was in 05. It had original programming in addition to running all the ABC shows. FRONS decided to pull all that programming and run 90210, The O.C. 15 times a week in place of shows like “One Day With” and “Soap Talk”. The man RUINED daytime television!!!! Me personally, once January comes General Hospital will be the only show I will watch on ABC. Watch while you can because as long as this man around G.H. days are numbered.

He has no regard for long time loyal viewers of these shows. Instead of coming up with creative solutions to make the shows more profitable and draw a larger audience, he just decided it was easier to put on more crap reality TV. He’s lazy and doesn’t deserve to be in a position that requires creativity and concern about viewers.

I love OTLT and GH and watch every episode. AMC I watch from time to time. I think its awfull that they are getting rid of the soaps. I hope they move Bri Williamson from OTLT, and Griffth Castillo of AMC to GH. They better not cancel GH. I have watched it for twenty five years religiiously. If they cancel GH there wont be any shows that I would like to watch from ABC.BRrain frons be sensitive to your viewers. At least hold on to GH for many more years to come!!!

I think One life to live and AMC should be made into one soap. They were spinoffs and charachters used to switch off and do crossovers. They could just appear that the two towns are closer .They could realy market this .One reason why soap opera watching is down is because the writers destroy much of the history and traditions of the soaps .Sure people dont watch as much during the day but they sure tape them or watch on soap net or the internet at night .They should combine the two shows and also rerun them at night or weekjends at dead times ..

I am 29 have watched soaps since I was 11.
I have watch all of them and I think this is the biggest mistake
ABC they are going to loss more then they gain. Soap fans are
very loyal. In 1999 NBC canceled Another World
June 25 1999 was last day I watched that channel.
Last two yearCBS cancelled Guiding Light & As The
World Turn September last year was last time I watched
anything on CBS & General Hospital will be last show I ever watch on

I am home all day because I am on disability. I therefore know perfectly well what is on tv and what I want to watch and don’t want to watch. I want to watch something with a plot. Something that I can get into and follow along with like a good book. Soaps allow that to happen – especially when they are done right. Replacing these shows with the information shows is a) not going to work because b) there are already so many of these shows out there they are going to be lost in fray. Why would I want to watch these shows that I can find anywhere else on tv? What did NBC just launch? Extream Makeover Weightloss Edition? Don’t get me wrong, I think it’s great that these people are getting their lives together, but seriously, how many of these shows do the networks expect us to actually watch? And a talk show? Really? I mean Really? Did Brian Frons get hit in the head? Is that why he thinks that getting rid of shows that have a guaranteed following for shows that he is going to end up replacing in a year was a good and creative idea? Last I checked Disney wasn’t hurting for money so what is the real reason for doing this? I do understand that they may have wanted to shake up the schedual to try something new and something had to be done to fix amc because chuck pratt made that show unwatchable – but those are fixable problems. Not axable problems. Brian Frons made a penny wise and pound foolish decision that is going to come back and bite him in the ass. I curse him with the problem of never having another successful programming lineup until he does the right thing and puts the soaps back where they belong and treat them with the respect they deserve. They have been around – if you include the ones that have already been axed – for 75 years. Anything that can sustain a following for that long deserves respect and attention. Obviously the formula – telling interesting stories in the afternoon – is a good one. The problem has been that the executives at the networks have been messing with the formulas and then wondering why they soaps are failing and then just axing them and blaming it on the viewers. That’s not how it works!! Give the soaps the attention they deserve and the viewers will come back. I won’t be watching the new shows and I doubt anyone else will either. Way to go Frons!

Goodbye ABC…I am a cable news watcher (FOX< MSNBC< CNN),,,the only ABC shows I recorded to were the DayTime Soaps. No way will I watch The Chew, never watched The View….you need to double down on tranquilizers to watch the them. So, so long ABC after recording your soaps for 20 years. Back to cable for me. Mr. Frons, you are an absolute idiot along with whoever is in charge at ABC. When stories are off the air well so am I. When stories are off air I will say good-bye to ABC network. For a network that is so very concerned about ratings, you really know how to get rid of viewers. Your glorious shows The Chew and The Revolution will fail and so will your network. Thanks ABC for thinking of the most loyal viewers that a network has ever seen.

Everything changes. It was just a matter of time before ABC moved into the twenty-first century and left the old-fashioned soap operas behind. Gawd, the last time I watched a soap was in college in the 80s.
The really exceptional actors always move on to bigger and better, and the mediocre try to hang onto the soaps and their ridiculous, hokey story lines.
It’s hard to believe that so many actors have spent their ENTIRE careers at one soap,
never moving out of their comfort zone and challenging themselves to something new.
Read a book, watch National Geographic or Discovery…open your mind!

Frons is a loser for canceling AMC & OLTL! As usual its probably more about his bonus vs. everyone else. Should be ashamed of himself really! AMC has been around for over 40 years – i highly doubt the Chew will make it through a season! How stupid is he? Cherry picking bastard….

Honestly, I am not interested in food shows, I have plenty of those in cable.. My down time after a hard days work was to sit by the tv. at 8 p.m. to watch AMC and OLTL, now that was taken from many woman viewers that have to work and not able to watch them at 1 and 2 p.m. What we want is AMC and OLTL to remain on the air and for them to put AMC back on National TV. I really have no interest in the chew or revolution. This person should get fire, he does not know what we want…Thanks for giving us the opportunity to opinion our voice and feeling towards what injustice was done by this man and ABC. I really hope the ratings are lower than the soaps….

I agree, hope this idiot rots in a very hot place. I hope the decision to cancel AMC and OLTL comes back and bites him in his rump. There is nothing about the new “Chew” that impresses me at all. Perhaps Prospect Parks will take both soaps off the ground and in to the internet soon.

i hope brian frons chokes on the chew. i will not watch ANYTHING on ABC, day or night. i also informed my husband of this and he agrees. 187. Sebrina

    September 27, 2011 at 12:11 pm

I watched some of the Chew and it was boring!! Why would you add a cooking show to ABC daytime when there is over a dozen other cooking shows on all day long… If you wanted to replace the two shows why not put them on the soap channel instead.. Now that the two best shows will be gone ABC will loose alot of ratings…. Frons and who ever eles who works with him needs the boot..

  188. Saturn Girl

    September 28, 2011 at 3:55 pm

Funny that when the ratings were “discouraging” Frons didn’t start “aggressively” MARKETING THE TWO SOAPS!! Or hey, here’s a thought–take a look at the show and see what it needed–like some experienced, good soap opera writers!! The advertising song and dance that has preceded The Gruel, I’m sorry, I mean The Choke, oops, ok, the Chew went on for weeks and weeks and weeks before the end of AMC. But for over a YEAR there were no promos, not even any “Next time on AMC” teasers. NOTHING. Guess what? TV shows are like plants — if you don’t water them and if you bring in really bad writers–oops–I mean gardeners–to tend them–THEY WILL DIE.

I hope Prospect Park makes a fortune off the online versions of these shows. One thing is for sure–I will never watch The Chew or Katy Couric’s show, and once OLTL is gone, I will be too — as an ABC viewer.

  189. Marcie

    September 29, 2011 at 8:45 pm

I agree with many who have written so far. AMC and OLTL should not have been canceled. There are just too many fans. I’ve watched the Chew with an open mind. Bottom line – It is just another cooking show. You watch them cook and then you watch them or the audience eat what they cooked. How exciting. I too have started to boycott ABC shows and sponsors. Mr. Frons I believe you have made a major mistake.

SINCE ABC WANTS TO HAVE WHAT EVER IT IS THAT THEY WANT FOR THE KIDS. THEY CAN HAVE IT OR WHAT EVER. BUT THERE SHOULD BE A BRAND NEW 24 HOURS SOAP NET CHANNEL PLAYING ALL OF THE DAYTIME SOAPS LIKE- SANTA BARBARA- THE LOVING OR WHAT EVER IT IS CALLED. AND THEN BRING BACK THE CITY- ALL MY CHILDREN, ONE LIFE TO LIVE, GENERAL HOSPITAL, GUIDING LIGHT, AS THE WORLD TURNS, SUNSET BEACH, PASSIONS, PORT CHARLES, ANOTHER WORLD, EITHER WAY ALL OF THESE DAILY SOAPS SHOULD COME BACK EACH AND EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM. IT’S ONLY FAIR THAT THE BRAND NEW NETWORK FOR THE SOAP NET WHICH SHOULD BE 24 HOURS FOR ALL OF THE DAYTIME SOAPS COMES ON SOAP NET STARTING WITH ALL OF THE OLD EPISODES AND NEW EPISODES. BRING BACK ALL OF THE VERY SPECIAL MEMORIES. PLEASE AND THANK YOU. PLEASE SAVE ALL OF THE DAYTIME SOAPS.

‘Strahan, Sara and Keke’ Canceled by ABC; Show Aired In Timeslot That Once Housed ‘All My Children’

No matter a network tries to do, replacing All My Children, which ran for 41 years on ABC has remained as everyone that follows the world of daytime drama knows, problematic.  Now come word via Page Six that Strahan, Sara and Keke has been canceled.

The show hosted by Michael Strahan, Sara Haines and Keke Palmer if you recall, replaced the foodie show, The Chew which ran for seven seasons and was the first show to air in the timeslot that belonged for over four decades to All My Children.

Back in March of this year, Strahan, Sara and Keke took a break to make way for ABC’s News  Pandemic: What You Need to Know, a daily coronavirus report anchored by Amy Robach, Dr. Jen Ashton and sometimes TJ Holmes.

However, because the show did well in that two-week experimental run it morphed into GMA 3: What You Need to Know.  The new version of the show also talked about hot topics in the current news cycle, as well.

ABC’s Catherine McKenzie began producing the “GMA3” show four months ago and the network officially announced her as Executive Producer of the program on Thursday.

While ABC has yet to officially announce Strahan, Sara and Keke is over, a spokesperson told Page Six: “We’re proud of our teams at ‘SSK’ and ‘GMA3’ and how quickly they transitioned to producing a daily show to give people the news and information they need during an unprecedented pandemic, and conversations continue about how the show will evolve in the months ahead.”

It appears that Strahan, Sara and Keke won’t be returning; the future as many of their staff have transitioned over to ‘GMA 3’ with producers from ABC News Live, (the streaming division), helmed by McKenzie.

As for the futures of Strahan, Haines and Palmer; Strahan will continues to host Good Morning America, and they are all actively under contract with the network.

So, what do you think of  ‘Strahan, Sara and Kek’e being replaced by ‘GMA 3: What You  Need to Know’?  How long do you think that show will last in the timeslot once taken up by residents of Pine Valley? Comment below.

Eva LaRue Talks On Her Daytime Emmy Nomination, And Opens Up About The Loss Of John Callahan

For Eva LaRue, the past two months have been some of the most emotionally gut-wrenching and challenging of her life, following the passing of her ex-husband, father of her child, and dearest friend, John Callahan (Ex-Edmund, All My Children). The outpouring of support she has received not only from her former AMC cast mates, but the soap world in general illustrates just how dear Eva is to all of us, and how many people had special memories of their time with John.

While mourning the loss of Callahan along with their daughter, Kaya, there was some heartwarming and re-affirming news that any actress would love to hear. Eva was nominated for a Daytime Emmy in the Outstanding Guest Performer in a Drama Series for her work as Celeste Rosales on CBS’ The Young and the Restless, and she is great company as her former AMC co-star Michael E. Knight (Ex-Tad) is also nominated along with her for his work on General Hospital.

The coronavirus pandemic has hit our country and world hard, but through it All My Children virtual reunions emerged as fans were engaged by the content, transported to happier times that brought them back to familiar faces in Pine Valley in which Eva participated along with her good friends, Kelly Ripa, Mark Consuelos and so many more, thanks to the EW. com weeklong event which concluded on Friday.

Michael Fairman TV talked with Eva in this very candid, at times heartbreaking, and open conversation where she shares details into the final days of her beloved John, her last moments with him, and how she tried to plan a memorial in his honor during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For so many of us, 2020 has certainly seen more lows then highs, but in the end for Eva, to receive a nomination now (an award she was last nominated for back in 1997 as Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for her work as Dr Maria Santos on All My Children) couldn’t have come at a better time. Here now is our conversation with Eva.

Photo: JPI

I’ve been thinking so much about you.  I’m glad we could do this, and in the midst of the tragedy of losing John Callahan, and then receiving a Daytime Emmy nomination.  What was your reaction when you learned you were nominated in a category with none other than your former AMC castmate and good friend, Michael E. Knight (Ex-Tad, AMC, now Martin, GH)?

EVA:  Oh, I know!  He’s the first person I texted!  I was like, “Congratulations, Michael!  Did you ever in a million years think that you and I would be in the same category of anything?”  Then I said, “And when you win this, can I just borrow it for the weekend just to dress it up and take pictures with it… just want to borrow it, just babysit the trophy for a weekend, please?” (Laughs)

What did you end up submitting that landed you the nomination for your role as Celeste on Y&R?

EVA: I submitted a scene with Peter Bergman (Jack, Y&R), who I have been friends for 30 years, if not more, and in all that time we had never worked together.  I met him when I was married to John O’Hurley (Ex- Dr. James Grainger) because John was over at The Young and the Restless at the time.  I went to a Christmas party with John to Peter and Mariellen’s house, and do you know who else was there?  Lisa Rinna (Ex-Billie, Days), and it was before she had gotten Days of Our Lives. She was dating Peter Barton (Ex-Scott Grainger, Y&R) at the time. We both ended up on soaps at the same time.  So, I submitted a scene with Peter, who is amazing, warm and open and such a great actor. Then I submitted a scene with my on-screen daughter Sasha Calle (Lola, Y&R) – I love that girl, and another one with Michelle Stafford (Phyllis, Y&R) who has also been my great friend for a couple of decades. The other scene I put on my reel was with me and Jordi Vilasuso (Rey, Y&R) who I also adore.  He is awesome and such a sweetheart.  I only had two months worth of material to draw upon.  So, I just submitted the scenes that I liked the best, and they all were within story, and all made sense.

Where is Celeste supposed to be now?

EVA:  She went back to Florida, and that was that. I would never say never to anything, but it was always supposed to be a short stint, and it was great.

So not only is it you and Michael E. Knight, but Jeffery Vincent Parise, Chrishell Stause, and Elissa Kapneck. This Guest Performer category is loaded!

EVA:  I know! I know and love, Chrishell (Ex-Amanda) because we worked together on All My Children, too, right before I left, and she is a doll.  She just might be the sweetest, kindest, girl on the planet.  She literally might be the sweetest person who ever lived!  I don’t know the other two nominees personally.  So, I’m excited for them too.  It’s such a diverse category.  It’s just really fun to be nominated with all of them.

You were nominated before, though, for your work as Maria on All My Chldren during the emotional baby switch storyline; working opposite Susan Lucci (Ex-Erica) for a lot in it.

EVA:  Yes.  I was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for All My Children, and I was nominated for Best Original Song.  I wrote a song when Maria came ‘back from the dead’ to All My Children, with a producer friend of mine from Miami Sound Machine.

So, you’ve been doing all of these All My Children virtual reunions, which is so interesting that in this pandemic, people are looking for content, and they dip back into these beloved shows.  Was it fun doing the EW.com Santos Family reunion with everybody?

EVA:  Oh yeah, it was really, really fun.  I only saw in the big picture everybody else’s photo who was a part of it, and the people who I actually do hang out with the most, and see the most, and talk to the most, are Kelly Ripa (Ex-Hayley), Mark Consuelos (Ex-Mateo), and Sydney Penny (Ex-Julia).  I don’t see Sydney as much, but I do see her probably once every two years at least, but Sarah Michelle Geller (ExKendall) I see all the time and talk to all the time.  Kelly, Mark, and Sarah are the ones who walked me through that first week when John Callahan passed.  They literally were on the phone with me, the three of them, almost every day, but I got beautiful outreach, from what seemed like everyone.  This is when no matter how many years have passed since you have been in daytime, that the daytime family as a group – there used to be fifteen shows, now there are four – and people have bounced around and they are on other shows- – but the entire soap opera community reached out,   I cannot even tell you how much that meant to me.  It was overwhelming, and it was really, spectacularly beautiful.

I hope it was some solace to you knowing how much people loved John, and also that they love and care so deeply for you.

EVA:  I mean, people who did not even work with John reached out.  Every soap was represented by getting a hold of me, sending a text or a phone call, or if they didn’t have my personal information, they tweeted, or whatever it was… literally from every reach of soapdom.  It was amazing.

And your relationship with John was amazing with all of the ups and downs you went through; that you remained such dear friends.

EVA:  We remained really great friends all the way.

I so remember when the two of you first got together and it was this storybook real life soap couple romance.  John was always so sweet to me.  I was so, so sad, and you know, my heart just broke for you.

EVA:  I think it was just such a shock.  I don’t think anybody, and even Kaya were talking about it, because she graduated this week, and her dad is not here.  We’re not having a graduation, because of COVID-19, which sucks on top of it, but we were just kind of talking through the feelings of it.  She said, “You know what’s weird?  I guess I never pictured dad getting old, and I always wondered why, and now I know.”  When I would get on John about his heart or his health, he used to always say, ‘Oh, don’t worry Evala, (he always called me “Evala”).  I’m going to be here.  I’m going to be here a long time.  I’m fine.  I’m going to be here to walk Kaya down the aisle and see her kids and all that.  Stop worrying,” Every time he said it to me, something in my gut said, “I don’t think he is.  I don’t think he is,” but I always just dismissed that.  But never in my wildest dreams did I think John wouldn’t make it to her high school graduation.  He was only 66.

I had heard you ended up running to Palm Springs to be near John.  I can’t even imagine what that must have been like.

EVA:  The only good thing about this pandemic is that we had been shut down for only two weeks at that point.  Kaya and I got in the car.  John had some heart procedures the day before, on a Thursday.  I called him in the morning before he went in for the procedure.  I said, “Call me as soon as you get out of there.  Call me as soon as you come-to again, and you’re good,” and he said, “Okay, I will.”  I said, “I’m going to send Kaya out to you on Friday for the weekend, just so you have somebody to hang out and watch you, and I might come out too,” And then, I said, “Maybe, I’ll come down too in case you are feeling weak, just to watch out for you for the weekend.”   So, he called me after the procedure.   I said, “I cannot believe they sent you home! You just had some major heart stuff done.”  He said, “Oh no, they said I’m fine.  It was just run-of-the-mill heart stuff, angiogram…”  I was like, “Are you sure?”  He said, “Yeah, I’m fine.  I’m just tired.  I’m going to go to sleep.”  I said, “Do you want me to send Kaya out tonight?” and he was like, “No, no, no.  Send her tomorrow.”  So, in the morning, I called him at 9:00am.  No answer.  I texted him.  He always texted me like Johnny on the spot, and then texts me immediately back.  So, I call him again at 10.  Nothing.  His best friend calls me about a half-hour later, “Hey, I talked to John at about 8:00 this morning.  He said he was feeling really, really shitty and was going to go back to the hospital, and then, I texted him again at like 8:30 to just tell him something, and he hasn’t texted me back, and he always texts me immediately back.”  I said, “Oh my, God, I’ve been trying to get a hold of him for two hours; he hasn’t texted me back,”   I said, “You know what, I’ll call you back.”  So, I called his friend who lives down the street from John, and I said, “Go to his house, please right this second, knock on the door, jump the fence, knock on his bedroom, he might be asleep, I don’t know.”  So, he gets there, nobody is answering.  I said, “Break into the house please.  So, he did, and John was collapsed in the bathroom.  They called the paramedics, and as soon as they called me back and said, “John is unresponsive in the bathroom,” Kaya and I threw everything in the car, and what usually takes us two and a half hours without traffic, we made it down there from Los Angeles in an hour and forty-five minutes.

Photo: JPI

I don’t know how you made it down there in one piece. Thank, God!

EVA:  I drove so fast, like literally broke all land speed records and thank God because we got there just in time.  He was in emergency.  He hadn’t been put up in ICU yet, where we wouldn’t have been able to see him.  They weren’t going to let us in the hospital.  Thank God the person answering the door was an All My Children fan.  She was the one saying, “Sorry, no one is allowed in the hospital, no one can come in,” and I was like, “No, no, no, my ex-husband just came in.”  She said, “Was it Edmund?” and I said, “Yes, it was Edmund!”  She said, “Okay, follow me.”  Thank God for All My Children.  Thank God.  So, we followed this woman secretly, and we get to spend a half-hour with him in Emergency.  He was already on life-support, totally unresponsive, but we got to play John his favorite music, we got to just sit there and hold his hand and talk to him, and tell him how much we loved him.  Sarah Michelle Gellar called right when we were in the hospital in Emergency, and she said, “Put the phone by his ear,” so I put the phone by his ear, and she talked to John too, and she told him how much she loved him.  She used to always call him “GP”, which was short of grandpa, because she came on the show when she was 15, and she didn’t have a dad, and John acted like a dad to her – but she used to always call him “grandpa”, and he hated “grandpa”, so he was like, “You can call me “GP”, but not grandpa,” so she always called him GP.  I just put the phone by John’s ear, and what was crazy is that when she talked to him, his feet started twitching.  He started moving his feet.  Then, when Kaya was talking to him about Yankee season, he started moving his feet.  We were kind of hopeful that something was changing for the better.  We had about a half-hour with him, and then, they took him up to ICU, and then, we knew we couldn’t see him again.  They called us later that night that he had passed.

I am just so thankful that you got to see John one last time.

EVA:  I thank God every day that we got to say goodbye, because if we hadn’t gotten there in time to say goodbye, I just don’t know.

It’s very rare that a couple after a divorce, who have a child, and went from romance to dear friends, end up maintaining that relationship so many years later in their lives.  I know so many people who were together at one point in their lives, for years, and they don’t even talk to each other now.

EVA:  Well, you know, like any divorce, the first four years afterwards were super contentious but then, by year five, we kind of had this major breakthrough, and from then on, he was one of my closest friends, and one of the things we always kept alive for each other was we loved to  dance together. We fell in love, I think, dancing because originally our characters on AMC met at this country-western bar, and we had to take country line dancing lessons on the show.  They hired a choreographer for us so that during those scenes where we were falling in love, we would actually be able to do a two-step! So, we went out and practiced at Denim and Diamonds, which was a big country-western place in New York City at the time.  We used to go out with a whole group of us.  It was me, and Teresa Blake (Ex-Gloria) and Kelly Ripa, and her boyfriend at the time, Winsor Harmon (Ex-Del), sometimes Walt Willey (Ex-Jack); we just had a whole crew of us who would go out country dancing.  John and I also loved singing together.  He had the most amazing gravely kind of rockstar voice, but his real talent was harmonizing.  He could harmonize to anything.  So, when he would come over, we would sit in the kitchen and sing, and sing, and sing until the late hours because that’s what we loved to do, and that’s what he loved to do.  That’s one of my favorite last memories of us.  He was just over the month before, and Kaya’s bedroom is near the kitchen, so she came out and was like, “Can you two shut up?”  It was like two in the morning and we were still singing in the kitchen. (Laughs)  John was my dear friend and my confidant.

Were you able to have some kind of service during this stay-at-home pandemic we are all dealing with, in order to mourn the loss of John?

EVA:  It’s been so crazy.  We couldn’t even have a funeral.  That’s what made it all the more heartbreaking.  There were less than twenty of us, and we just got on a Zoom call and memorialized John.   I thought we were going to do a big Zoom memorial, but it seemed so overwhelming and so impersonal, it just was rubbing us wrong in every way.  Every way we were looking at it, we were like, “Oh my, God, we just can’t.”  We wanted to invite everybody he had ever worked with, and we were like, “No, we want to do that when everything can open back up again, and invite every person, and have a party” because John was always the life of every party.  Maybe we can do that in the fall or next year.  I kept trying to write something for the small memorial we did do for three days.  I kept coming back to this one song, because John was always the consummate bartender, too.  I sang a song that Bette Midler sang on the very last episode of Johnny Carson.  It was “One for My Baby (and One More for the Road)” and it’s about a bartender who has got a big personality and a lot to say.   I changed some of the words around a bit just to reflect who John was, and so, I ended up singing for it instead of speaking.  We always talked about that last episode of Carson; how stunningly emotional it was when Bette sang that song to kind of sing Johnny off for of all of his years on the air.  So, that’s what I did and because we loved to sing together, it just made sense.

I do think you touched upon something, earlier, too.  I don’t think any other genre would have that kind of unbridled camaraderie.  It’s such a family, like you said.  I don’t think you would find that quite like this; certainly in show business.

EVA:  I really don’t think you can. Even though there is always a good amount of competition in the soaps as well; between the soaps it’s like they are any sports team, but there is always a level of respect, love, and familial connection within the community.  I think that is why they have stood the test of time.  I really do think that is what hooks our audience, that is what keeps them there after all of these years, even though unfortunately the genre is antiquated looking, there is something about it that is nostalgic, familial, and comfortable for people.

Photo: JPI

Every time I talk about All My Children, why do you think everybody go ga-ga for it, when it’s been off the air for several years now?

EVA:  It speaks to people’s childhoods.  It speaks to how we grew up.  You can’t undo nostalgia.  You can’t.  It’s in the way we grew up, the things we loved, the things that we scheduled our lives around, the people we fell in love with on the shows that we watched, who we cared about and loved their storylines. I grew up watching All My Children, General Hospital, and Days of Our Lives.

It must have been a spectacular moment for you when you realized you were actually in Pine Valley and a member of the cast of All My Children then?

EVA:  It was amazing.  I was a fan when I got the show.  I was a straight up fan.  I fangirled walking through that dressing room hallway for the first time! I was trying to keep it in check, but you know … (Laughs)

So, in closing, you would say, “Thrilled to be nominated”?

EVA:  Yes.  So fun.  It has really been a rollercoaster of a couple of months here.  That nomination was literally the bright, shining spot in all of this.
