ABC President of Entertainment Paul Lee On Daytime Soaps: "Our Focus is On General Hospital! We Are Not Looking to Revive AMC & OLTL!"

This morning at the ABC Summer Press Tour Television Critics Association Panel, ABC President of Entertainment Paul Lee fielded a few questions about the state of soaps on ABC in which he stated, “I started my life (producing) on Brazilian and British soap operas.  I don’t want to overclaim it, but I feel like Revenge, for instance, has really made soaps cool again.  There’s nothing wrong with serialized drama,” he says.

So that begs the question is ABC reconsidering daytime soaps? The Entertainment President says ABC is not looking to revive All My Children or  One Life to Live, and they’re not looking at picking up new scripted daytime shows.  Lee stated, “I think those decisions were made.  Our focus is on General Hospital, and I think Frank Valentini is doing a great job with that, and a lot of his crossovers.  So we like that and are great supporters of it.”

Lee also wanted the audience of journalists to give The Chew some push!  “I think we are very pleased with The Chew.  I don’t know if you are watching that, but it’s got such energy, that show..  And we saw a presentation the other day, and that’s just going to get better and better.  It’s also a huge asset for us as you get into the holiday season and beyond.”

So this fall, its Revenge, General Hospital, and the primetime new series 666 Park Avenue, that will provide the soapy drama from ABC.  What do you think of Lee’s comments? Weigh-in!

I think he’s full of it. If he wanted soapy drama from ABC, then he should have along with the rest of ABC to keep AMC and OLTL on the air, along with GH, and not put these stupid talk shows, cooking shows, and lifestyle shows on the air.

I knew all along they had no intention of bringing back our shows or adding anymore scripted drama to daytime. He is a corporate pig and I do not believe or like him in the least. Ok he said it. Goodbye ABC for good except GH. There are many choices to choose from and ABC is at the bottom.

Screw the Chew, Paul Lee and ABC! “ABC is not looking to revive All My Children or One Life to Live”. Then sell the DAMN rights back to Agnes Nixon or to another interested party!!!!! Why is ABC holding on to the rights of OUR soaps?????

I think the man is in his own fantasy land. Soap fans of AMC and OLTL are NOT watching the chew, or gaa or will not watch rikki lake and especially not watch katie couric! In my family (have 2 grown kids with families of their own) we do not watch anything on abc anymore, nothing at all. The only show I watch is GH which I have watched since the beginning.

I am more apt to notify advertisers on any of those shows and also boycott the products that do advertise. Oh, we have all the disney stations blocked on our tv and dvr as well.

This man who wants the journalists to put the push on the junk he recommended needs to just be pushed out the door. The only way to appease some of the loyal soap fans is to give Agnes Nixon back the rights to her shows to do with as she pleases.

Don’t understand why you won’t do this. You have gotten rid of Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy to CBS starting in September, so if you are not to revive OLTL and AMC give them back to their creator. If not, well you can just kiss my glass!

Why can’t they get how much they are hated now and can’t be redeemed by putting crap on the air and think we are going to stupidly watch anything because it’s ABC Daytime. That disappeared with OLTL and AMC. Please ABC tank then maybe you’ll give the rights to Agnes and/or all the people who worked so hard and made OLTL a ratings dream. ABC and Disney “It’s a small world after all” because ABC needs to accept how stupid they were to piss off soap fans.Want ratings, simple, bring back our soaps!!!

I don’t trust abc to keep it word about GH. I have a feeling that GoodAfter America is priming it self to take GH place. It would be a sad and bitter day if abc take GH off the air.

      August 16, 2012 at 7:47 am

As I have given these other replacement shows a chance, I am totally disappointed at ABC and it executives. I absolutely agree with you and then some. He, as well as, other top executives at ABC, is obviously, clueless at this point, which is evident in the demise of ABC TV, as to what true soap opera fans really want. It was a very cruel and unappreciative way for the network to show their appreciation and loyalty to all of the millions of soap opera fans who have stuck with them throughout the years, 50+ years, through wars, recessions, elections, discrimination, inflation, etc. and using people like this as their henchmen.

It’s not just about a soap opera being taken off the air, it’s about the relationships that we built with ABC through the soap operas that ABC had so loyally supplied us with up until last year and the ongoing and development of the characters and new characters that have kept us as riveted fans. In a way these soap operas have been a part of my life and my legacy that was handed down to me from my grandmother to her mother, from my mother to me and now from me to my daughter. ABC soaps like All My Children (AMC), and One Life To Live (OLTL) have not only kept me entertained, but if has helped educate me, and probably many others about propriety, tolerance, empathy, and sympathy, which has heighted my awareness of the problems we face in this country, and the world.

Creating or attempting to create a legacy is how viewer loyalty, and branding are formed. I am no guru when it comes to television production, advertising, and marketing, but I would think that this is what ABC and other networks are trying to achieve, and If taking off shows like AMC, and OLTC that have been tremendously popular over the years, is their way of doing this, they have failed miserably.

You cannot just take away a diamond, and replace it with a semi-precious stone or take away the use of a body part and not expect that the people that effects won’t feel or be seriously impacted by the loss. There are now two hours in my day were I feel a tremendous loss, and there has been nothing thus far and probably ever will, replace that loss.

Now that ABC has hit a few rough patches (it’s been there before) it wants to get rid of or dump, proven over-the-test-of- time soap operas, like AMC, and OLTC, and replace them with a substandard product, in an already over saturated market of television talk shows, and reality television, to which I am trying to so desperately trying to escape for at least 2-3 hours during the day. Shows like the Revolution, and in my opinion, the do not come close to what we have lost, and from the looks of the turn over time or cancellation of these new shows, when it is all said, and done they will not be able to stand the true test of time, or ultimately, hold a candle to AMC and OLTL.

I’ll admit I’m an AMC, OLTL and General Hospital (GH) junkie; but ABC better hope and pray for millions and millions more junkie’s just like me to watch the shows that they forced on us or have put on to replace our beloved soaps, if they expect these shows to have the loyalty, longevity and success of the cancelled AMC and OLTL.

I have watched Revenge which airs in the evening and might be subject to, and not adverse to watching 666 Park (something) in evening; but I need something of true substance from 11am – 3pm to watch in the daytime. Come on ABC re-think the situation 🙂

      July 28, 2012 at 3:59 am

I will not watch anything on ABC except for General Hospital. They can drop the chew, will never watch it. When it comes on I change the channel till 3 o’clock for GH. For Good Afternoon American, it the same thing. I will not let my tv be on ABC. So good bye to the other shows. ABC is sure going down hill with their progaming. Release these show so another channel can pick them up. Why are you holding on to these shows if you will not use them. Bring our soaps back and you will again get your audence back too.

      • susan M.

        July 29, 2012 at 1:12 pm

I’ll never watch the Chew. It’s a stupid program and if I want to watch a cooking show I’ll tune in to one of the cooking channels. Katie Couric is going to flop so they need to figure something out with that daytime slot. Create another show with the characters you can get back from AMC and OLTL, have them play the same characters but make it one show and call it something else.

Well I’m glad that GH is getting positive press!! Not sure about 666 working. I’m so looking forward to the changes now with moving the s/l’s that were stale for 3 yrs and the new canvas finally coming together. Robin and Ewen now I’m scared also for Liz my fav. Jason sounds like he is finally getting a clue again. Love Steve B and hope to see his s/l moving also. In light of DWTS I’m happy to get KM moving on to that. Patrick is breaking my heart he needs some hope for Robin being alive. Is Helena behind Ewen and his work……me thinks soooo maybe some Jerry Jax also. Could Jason been effected by mind control the last 3 yrs?? It’s soapy enough to work!

I think Mr. Lee and the rest of the ABC exects have their heads in the wrong place. I hate the Chew and won’t watch it. The only reason ABC is keeping it is because it is cheaper to broadcast. I saw a preview today for Katie and it was some more self-help crap being advertised. How to protect our children; how to protect our money, ect. I would have thought the would have learned their lesson with the Revolution but apparantly not. I think Frank Valentini is doing a great job with GH. It was actually become tolorabe but it needs a lot more to keep me hooked. I don’t want anything to happen to GH but the viewers are still not satisfied. The only thing I watch on ABC is my local news and GH and that is how it will stay. ABC doesn’t even advertise GH like they do the Chew and The View. How supporting is that? Trash the Chew and give us something worth watching.

    • susan M.

      July 29, 2012 at 1:25 pm

I agree with you Vanessa..You made some very good points..The chew commericals make my stomach turn…So I change the channel right away…FV stiill has more work to do to keep GH on permantely on abc….And exciting, interesting & make you addicted to GH enough to keep watching it mon.-fri. Trash these talk info show we have all these kind of shows already….These shows are nothing new or fresh!!!! They say viewers want change like these replacement shows ..NO WAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They are brain-dead….These shows will never catch on ………………………………I am very stubborn I will only watch GH & nothing else on daytime programming……………………….Our stories that’s it for me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You hit the nail on the head Susan – I want to be “Addicted” to GH so I’ll watch it everyday like I was to OLTL. I started watching again because of the crossovers, but killing off all the children, breaking up Jolie, and subtle changes in the OLTL characters isn’t a way to keep me or other OLTL fans! The Chew – it is a Joke and I’d never watch it now or later.

  13. Torrey

    July 27, 2012 at 5:07 pm

Boycott is now forever to me. With all the cable and other networks, who needs ABC except GH. Really, the concept of Revenge is not a good thing to teach to the already crazy public so I would never watch that anyway. The minute I saw the name Revenge I thought it was a terrible idea. Does he not realize that these dumb ass programs he has replaced our soaps with do not have the staying power of AMC and OLTL. In 5 10 20 years no one will remember them. But we have watched these soaps some of us since day 1 and will always remember the laughter sorrow and enjoyment they brought into our lives. So yes give the rights back to Agnus and let her find another network willing to air them again….I think he will not do that because he would realize what a huge mistake he has made cancelling them when another network gets the huge ratings he could have had.

      • susan M.

        July 29, 2012 at 9:40 am

You are right Wendy these replacement shows for OLTL & AMC are forgetable….I can remember certain stories from way back when…A lot of memories with our stories……………..You are right about the huge ratings they could have..They had it for 40years plus & to throw it all away for these uninteresting, less productive shows that are here today gone tommoirrow…And no one will ever watch them..They are going to be the big losers…Mr. Lee is as clueless as Brian Frons..Two birds of a feather…They don’t want to please their loyal soap fans they had for years(we the majority viewers of daytime programming) !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  22. Linda

    July 27, 2012 at 6:20 pm

If ABC/D has no intention of reviving AMC & OLTL then give them back to Agnes Nixon. What is ABC/D afraid of? They already lost millions of viewers, so just give the rights back to Agnes and be done with them. We will still watch and support GH. We will never watch the Spew or the Oprah wannabe. We are not going to support your primetime. You have lost us forever! So ABC/D do the right thing now!

  23. Sarah

    July 27, 2012 at 6:32 pm

The Spew?? Revolting, repulsive, actually disgusting! NEVER would we watch that mess..
As for GH, it is the ONLY show we watch on ABC ever since they did the hatchet job on soaps. It is, however, getting hard to accept the storylines and the emphasis on
OLTL characters, while trashing the longtime couples (Jason and Sam in particular)
we loved on GH. A little love in the afternoon again would help a lot, and reuniting
the Morgans would make us all happy and interested again.

  24. Angie U

    July 27, 2012 at 6:36 pm

Should bring OLTL & AMC they still have loyal fans who will never watch the drivel of the Spew or Katie Who. Just like we’re not watching Good Afternoon Asshats. Loving GH best it’s been in years love what RC & FV are doing with it. ABC better wake up and give fans what they want before it’s too late. Soaps are hot.

That’s ridiculous. What is he talking about? Revenge made soaps cool again? They never stopped being “cool” in my mind. NOTHING can replace a real soap that has history and a fan base that will watch for decades. Also, most ABC soap fans stopped watching ABC in January (except GH)…so I’ve never seen Revenge or The Chew, and I never will. No amount of press will change that. The Chew gets crap ratings, so the fact that he says they’re pleased with that show, tells me they’ve got NO CLUE what they’re talking about. Bunch of idiots in charge over there.
And if they aren’t planning to revive AMC and OLTL, they need to sell the rights back to Agnes Nixon!

Maybe your fans will possibly watch your stupid new shows if you air them at a different time. Put our soaps on maybe you can win some back. HOWEVER – If you have no plans to revive AMC/OLTL what is the reason you will not give back to Agnes Nixon. Please answer that question for everyone. You are holding it hostage yet you do not give a **** about the fans of these long airing shows nor do you care about the shows – So get a flipping clue and give the soaps back to Agnes. You are a total control freak. You are mad at the fans so you keep them to yourselves, selfish garbage I say. Now if we can get everyone that is a fan of Revenge to wait for it on DVD that will drive your network down – Oh wait maybe you will not put them on DVD in order to keep any viewers you do have. So lets all wait for your answer regarding The Soaps Given Back To Agnes.

They should give the rights to AMC & OLTL back to Agnes..If they do ABC is afraid they might have some stiff competetion….And will lose soap fan viewers totally..They have already for the exception of GH..Abc is hanging by a thread….It is pure spite by abc in keeping the rights to our beloved soaps. The rights are of our beloved soaps are collecting dust in the hands of ABC….Give them up abc..Again they are afraid they would lose big time if they released the rights to Agnes…We all know that…I will not watch any replacement shows for our soaps no matter what it is….If it weren’t for GH I wouldn”t be watching abc daytime anymore…

First 666-sign of satan. Got no use for that show. The chew is eing watched but not by OLTL & AMC true fans. I am so thankful GH is getting positive press. We dont care if they put OLTL back on ABC. Just want them to sell the rights. The only reason not to sell is that they don’t want to give a winning show to anyone ese. Then they would have to admit their mistake. I along with mllions o fans hae lost all respect for ABC & will continue to boycott til the sponsors pull out & others quit them. I hope ABC fails at what ever they attempt. Bring back OLT & AMC.

The Chew is the worst show I ever saw on TV. Would never watch it. I realize they cost a lot less to produce and yeah, you get what you pay for – nothing. I enjoy GH but don’t see where they needed to bring the OLTL fans over and make them the stars of the show. I watch GH occasionally but not like I used to. When I see it is all about OLTL I turn it off.

No, I was never a fan of OLTL, never liked it only GL and GH. I was very disappointed that they brought over the 4 from OLTL and made them stars of GH. I would have watched OLTL if I wanted to see them. This is only my opinion of course, I am sure the OLTL fans are thrilled to see them become GH stars.

      July 29, 2012 at 5:48 am

The crossovers from One life to live aren’t the “stars” Of General Hospital, They are now a part of General hospital. and there is nothing wrong with them being there, remove the Characters from One life to live and watch the ratings go down, Fast, I am so sick of negative fans who think they own general hospital, I have watched what has been going on for almost 50 years of General hospital, I also have watched One life to live for almost 44 years and there is nothing wrong with their presence On general hospital, New characters come and go on the soaps all the time. At least now we don’t have to see general hospital taken over by the mob that pretty much killed the ratings for that soap so many years ago, Last year at this time we were wondering if we were also seeing the last of General hospital at least now there is a chance it may survive with the HELP of the CROSSOVERS from ONE LIFE TO LIVE.

      • 1loveabcsoaps

        August 1, 2012 at 5:53 pm

Let me just ADD, don’t fool yourself if you think its JUST the crossover’s that have increased the ratings over at GH. No! Its ALSO the writing. If character’s of OLTL were TAKEN OFF Gh, one by one/ litttle by little….TRUST and BELIEVE that the ratings may suffer somewhat at first, BUT as long as ‘good writing ‘ continues the viewership would remain. I am sick and tired of OLTL fans thinking they are entired to GH (they are not). You talk like GH was some flunky of a serial before the few OneLife case showed up. Let me REMIND you that GH, has been winning BEST SERIAL for year’s, year after year, at one time. GH isn’t some rookie of a soap, WET behind the ears, that needef the NIGHT and SHINNING armor of a soap, ONE LIFE to come rescue it. What GH needed was “good writing” and that’s what GH has, and is ‘what’ is really OWNED the credit. If the writing was bad, with all the OLTL fan fare, GH “would not” be increasing in the ratings, no matter how many Onelife fans showed up on GH. Its the writing, OWED the ratings credit over-all…! So cut it out, this is rediculous! Onelife had its moment in time, and it is OVER!!! And Geneal Hospital ” STILL” has their’s. Neither one of these soaps are my favorite, including AMC. I have favored ALL of THEM depending on storyline, but this gets to be rediculous, reading the same ole same ole. One woman wrote on here (2weeks ago) about this ‘same’ debate which insights fights, and name calling…. that, ” this is a fictional show, with fictional character’s, where “grown” people sit on here and fight about. ” I didn’t get a chance to respond to her and by now wouldn’t know where to look (nor do I have the time) BUT it’s beginning to be SAD. Like I stated a few weeks ago, people on here are so worried about these soap character’s who (although off the air) are doing FAR BETTER than us fans, having worked in the medium making money for year’s. They aren’t missing any meals. One of them (unemployed) are doing better than 20 unemployed soap fans. We need to be contacting one another on here (with this economy) asking each other are we ok, AND doing some networking, RATHER than keeping this ‘same ole subject’ alive. Get a new subject. Like Blake said in February, ” let the show go folks”. As for what I first logged on to comment about to you :
“Our Focus is On General Hospital! We Are Not Looking to Revive AMC & OLTL!”

And what I wanted to say: I told you so Barbara and been telling you so!

Now what do I purpose, CONTINUED boycott of ABC during those time slots of cancelled soaps, and boycott ALL programming OTHER THAN GH. And occasional post making sure ALL soap fans are doing the same. Also, cancel cable which DISNEY- which makes money from ALL the cable channels. Plus all the many other/ different suggestions I use to post. Lots of things to continue to do. UDERSTAND, those shows are not going to EVER come back as they use to be. Why? They cost TOO much to produce, wardrobe, sets, and the many salaries of the many crews. It’s an end of an era. AT BEST, we will be lucky if we get ‘ those shows’ back as a ‘ half hour ‘ serial, combined into a hour with the returning cast of AMC and OLTL, together for a 1 hour soap. At Best!

        August 4, 2012 at 8:59 am

I agree with iloveabcsoaps and couldn’t have said it better myself. Yes, it is the good writing and also I might add, the fact that there isn’t a big selection of soaps to watch any longer. OLTL fans act as if those four didn’t come over and take their fans with them that GH would be canceled. I am simply saying that I have watched GH for years and never watched OLTL and we didn’t need them to bring the ratings up. The show is good now with or without the OLTL characters. There are many actors/actresses on soaps who were canceled that lost their jobs and any one of those from any of the other soaps canceled would have brought their fan base to GH had they been hired. Keep up the good work, writers, that is what is making people watch, not because OLTL characters were brought here. One by one they could disappear and GH would survive.

      • susan M.

        August 9, 2012 at 6:55 am

But my loyalties will always be to OLTL..On or not!!!!! I beg to differ on OLTL crossovers..I think it is a definite plus for GH because you got OLTL fans watching GH…Which gives GH even more viewers…….Gh will survive because of the writers from OLTL….The crossovers help again get OLTL fans tunnig in on GH…………….New writers from OLTL have a lot to do with Gh’s success….Before they came aboard the stories were TOO mob oriented for a very long time..Those kind of stories where one of the on going ones for too long..So the ex-writers of OLTL gave GH a face-lift which it needed..

I agree. And this isnt a cross over. This is Cartini’s ( Frank V and Ron C, executive producer and head writer) concerted effort to continue One Life stories on GH.
It would have worked if he decided to fully integrate the characters into GH and cut their llandview ties but they are determined to revive One Life within GH.

That is bound to upset GH fans that never watched OLTL and have no emotional ties to the characters or stories. Soap fans are far too territorial. I watched OLTL off and on since the late 70s and I started Gh in 1969.

I think Cartini have really dropped the ball here and like Tali I only watch certain scenes when I DVR the show ever now and then. The true history of GH has been backburnered in favor of Cartini’s vision. I didnt like the majority of what they did with OLTL and I dont like them on GH.

And responding to one of the posters below GH’s ratings havent risen. They barely have a little over 2 million viewers-big whoop! Lol. When One Life went off the air their final ratings gave them around 2.5 million viewers. Wow, block buster-not! I miss the original GH of the 90s, the 80s and the 70s.
This show on the air today isnt GH, its a mere shadow. I’m no longer a fan and thats sad because I watched the show for over 42 yrs! SMH. ( Shaking my head)

Daytime soap fans, we have a real opportunity here. Let’s not blow it. We have a long battle ahead of us, but if we refuse to tune into whatever crap they put on from noon through four o’clock, except GH, and keep on doing this for at least the next year, we will be sending a huge message that we want our stories; not this other garbage. They won’t listen to our letters and posts, but sooner or later, when their feeble attempts at ulternative programing fail to get the ratings they want, advertisers will begin to look for other shows to sponsor. TIIC at ABC gravely under estimated the power of soap fans. We need to stick together regardless of what our favorite soap is/was and stand with GH in order to send a loud message. We cannot stop refusing to watch other shows and applying pressure. GAA, The Chew, Katie…all such replacement shows must fail to get ratings or positive press. Then and IF they bring back our stories, we must raise the roof in praise and keep the ratings high; make them rue the day they ever cancelled our shows. JMHO.

I’m with you Rodd. Frankly, NONE of their other programming really interests me so it is easy enough to do. 🙂

I am going on further. I, like a lot of people have a few reality shows that I like (the better produced ones likes Amazing Race), but I am taking a STAND and I am giving them all up. It occurred to me as I was watching Master Chef the other night. I have seen it all already.

I would rather watch old re-runs of Hawaii 5-0 or I Love Lucy then one more reality show. I MISS scripted shows. I miss the 20-something soaps that used to be on – when you could turn the TV on in the afternoon and have no trouble finding a great scripted soap. I’m just sick of all this reality garbage. I am taking a personal stand. I may be one of the few, but I have reached that point in my life where I value quality and things like The Chew are not quality.

      Susan M,

Katie is a syndicated show like Live with Kelly. Although it is produced by ABC, it can air on NBC, CBS or Fox stations.

In your market, it will air on the NBC station instead of the ABC station. Your ABC station will air some other show at 3:00pm instead.

The question becomes: Will Revenge last 40+ years? The probable answer: NO. I haven’t watched it. I had heard that it was one of the shows on the cancel list.

I am a shut-in. I watch alot of TV, Mr. Lee. I can tell you the circuit the stars make through the NY talk and interview shows, from GMA or Today on through to David Letterman or Jay Leno. The formats of daytime “hosted shows” are identical, and totally dependent on show empahsis, i.e. women’s issues (The View, The Talk), general entertainment (Live with Kelly, Ellen DeGeneres) food and crafts (The Chew, Rachel Ray). While each network thinks they are coming up with a new, exciting show, the reality is, they are not. And they get boring. Very boring.
Scripted television costs more, yes, but by the very act of having to put new words onto paper, and present a script breaks the tedium of having to watch the same file of actors, set up the same clip, tell the same jokes to clone hosts, who ask the same questions… get the picture. I have watched marathons of shows on cable channels that I have already watched in marathons before, rather than watch hosted-shows, or reality shows, which are also being shown in marathons on other cable channels. Television in general has gone downhill. If the executives who control the type and content of the shows being produced lived up to the potential of their medium, TV would be a much more interesting place. There are thousands of talented actors, scriptwriters, designers, cameramen and all the support staff out there, waiting for the executives to remember that TV must be entertaining. Even Daytime TV.

Revenge is not on any cancel list…it was one of ABC’s biggest hits last season. I personally love the show and can’t wait until it comes back.

I do agree with you about the “hosted” talk shows. They are all the same and I’m bored to tears with them. I do record a couple–Kelly and Ellen–but I FF through the boring stuff. The rest of them I don’t even bother with.

And the reality shows are just dumbing-down America. The stupidity is astounding!

I kinda regret…not giving Revenge a try. I just couldn’t find the time. and that’s because of how much i like Madeleine Stowe.

the other show… i know i will start… and hopefully, it succeeds.. is 666 Park Avenue… I don’t like the title… as the 666 connotation… makes me leary.
however, 666 stars – Vanessa Williams… ex-desperate housewives, ugly betty. She always keeps my attention… sassy, not over the top… plays *itch… too well. does comedy, drama… which is a rare feat.
Terry O’quinn, ex-lost… and dave Annabelle, ex-brothers and sisters… who i really liked. This could be good… i’ve liked the promos.

Forget it everyone! ABCD will always get an F for canceling our soaps. So we can boycott non soaps, but don’t expect new scripted shows. Reality TV has changed everything. Who would have thought AMC would be taken off the air. Even though the show devolved, at the end with better writers, it became recognizable; yet was too late like GL. OLTL and ATWT should have never been cancelled but unlike when other soaps were axed for ratings; these well written shows, especially OLTL had the ratings, we’re canned for cheaper productions.

I have watched AMC, OLTL and GH for about 40 years and it just makes me sick to think of the out and out disrepsect that ABC has for Agnes Nixon and of course THE FANS!!!! Ever since OLTL went off the air in January the only daytime tv show i watch on ABC is GH. Would never and Will never watch any replacement show that ABC has to offer!!!! As for Revenge, it’s actually a great show, but with moving it to a new time slot this fall, we’ll see if it makes it a third season. Although, Desparate Housewives, Brothers and Sisters and originally Grey’s Antomey all did very well on Sunday nights. I miss OLTL most of all, but i am happy that GH has RC and FV reviving it again. Of course i love that some of the characters from OLTL are now on GH, and it’s great that they are wrapping up or are gonna wrap up open ended storylines from OLTL. No disrespect to longtime GH viewers (as i am as well) but we daytime fans, as you all know, will get our “Love in the Afternoon” fix anyway we can……..

I read that Katie Couric told ABC that she wants to follow GH bcuz she knows that GH fans will boycott her show if they cancel GH n she doesn’t want that. We all know ABC is all about the ratings so cross your fingers that ABC doesn’t back out of the contract with GH to keep GAA on instead!!!

He’s just another corporate hack, no different from the rest. When the entertainment industry was taken over by international business conglomerates, the whole culture changed. Or maybe more correctly, the entertainment culture was kicked out and replaced by a stern and oncompromising committment to the bottom line. There’s no vision left, or allowed, certainly not encouraged without an immediate return. These people would gladly broadcast a blank screen if they thought they’d make money doing it.
They care NOTHING for the viewers, or the creators, or the cast, crews, providers of any sort. NOTHING.

There is no reason OLTL could not be easily resurrected. WONT WATCH THE CHEW! Sorry there is enough cooking shows on the food and cooking channel. Keep up the good work on GH! And release the rights to AMC and OLTL!!!

Why don’t they release the rights of OLTL & AMC… Doesn’t make any sense …They are keeping it & it’s collecting dust on ABC’s shelf & not doing anything…What a waste….

Abc doesn’t care about the many fans that have watched there soaps for decades so I don’t care about them and will never watch their crappy shows ever, I Will watch general hospital, as soon as I see what will be on for the next day I change the channel and abc won’t be on till the next day at 3 when we repeat the same thing over again, I agree with what you are saying here RELEASE THE RIGHTS TO THE SOAPS.

if you think I will EVER watch the SPEW!! You guys screwed up royally by removing All My Children and One Life!! A MAN would admit his mistake and rectify it, but you are no man, you are a worm. I will NEVER watch GAA or any other GARBAGE you put on ABC ever again. I will continue to watch General Hospital until you cancel it too, because I don’t believe a word you say in regards to saving it. You have proven to me that you do not care what your viewers want, can not be trusted, and are determined to shove more garbage tv down our throat! I am Boycotting ABC, Disney, and anyone who sponsors shows broadcast in AMC and OLTL’s former time slots. I will also continue to recruit all my friends to follow suit. I notice your ratings are down, and GMA lost at the Emmys. This WILL continue until our shows are either reinstated, or you give the rights back to Agnes, so it can air somewhere else. I know why you won’t do that though–you are afraid. Afraid of the HUGE ratings the show will recieve, and the STOMPING any show you air against it will receive.

And another thing, I am so SICK of hearing how reality is so much cheaper than a good scripted show. Just look at the likes of all the web series like VENICE THE SERIES that the soap stars have put together. They are making them happen. Hollywood just needs to get its act together and stop being so pedestrian and just putting absolute GARBAGE on the sets. They should be ASHAMED at what they are doing. Look how far television has come and the best they can do is throw reality garbage on there?

I swear if GH gets canceled and/or Y&R I will be completely finished with network television because they will have proven to me that they no longer want ME as a consumer.

  57. Carly

    July 28, 2012 at 12:43 pm

GH is good now and everyone is watching, once they want it canceled they will make the stories so no one will watch and that gives them an excuse to blame it on the ratiings just like they did with GL and AMC. They made the stories so ridiculous that fans quit watching and then blamed it on the ratings. That is their plan. When they feel it is time to dump GH, they will do the same as they did to the other soaps.

    July 28, 2012 at 1:51 pm

One day, someone will go “retro” and provide a winning bible for a new scripted daytime drama and a network will take the chance. It will be a big hit and suddenly “everything old is new again.” We just need to wait for that day and the rigth combination of people on creative teams and in the corporate offices.

What’s his name, Paul Lee? He’s dreaming that we Soap fans will take this awful, cheap replacement programming and LIKE it…NOT! Since there are no plans to bring back OLTL and AMC, he should do the right thing and sell the Rights back to Agnes! I hate what ABC has done to Daytime and most Primetime programming. If I want talk/reality, there’s plenty of other places to watch that’s better! ABC has gone to the toilet!!

Get rid of the chew and bring back OLTL and AMC on 12 week cycles. I would love to have my OLTL back for six months a year than nothing at all. OLTL and AMC could run like a revenge like show with a major cliffhanger at the end of each cycle.

Mr. Paul.Lee you are totally wrong I am watchin nothing on daytime channels where AMC was taken off since AMC was taken off I will never watch any thing other than AMC where you get the idea that we who love OLTL & AMC are happy with watching these other shows. You are way off your rocker in NO WAY SHAPE OR FORM are we ok with these other shows, and as long as you have them up I for one, and I’m sure I speak for many when I say take those other stupid shows off and put the soaps back on. They should not have been taken off in the first place to put on what is on there who care to watch a cooking show, every one who watched the drama and romance and such really got into that, I have never watched one CHEW show and don’t ever plan to, if you won’t put the soaps back on then sell the rights back to ANGNES so she can go to another network and put the soaps back on there. Quite denigning us what we want. It’s very apparent that we DO NOT LIKE WHAT YOU HAVE ON NOW

Once again, the boo-birds and fanatics are out in force, with immature name-calling (“he’s craze”; “what a dope”; “katie couric is a witch”), boycotts, and temper tantrums because ABC has not brought back their precious soap operas yet. There is one simple fact that these people refuse to admit (in public at least): it is fundamentally not healthy for grown men and women to be so attached to a TELEVISION PROGRAM, for what will be I’m sure be YEARS after the shows were cancelled. That is as clear an indication as can be that something is not right. There is no defending that type of behavior so don’t even try.

Me grandmother and mother both watched Another World for YEARS, practically for its entire run. During my school years, I even started watching it with them, every day for years. It was fun to spend time with them, talk about the silly storylines, etc. I remember those days very very fondly. Eventually, Another World was cancelled. Guess what? We all looked back at all the fun we had watching it. We thought it was a shame that a show that had been on for so long was going off the air. The following week after it had ended, we all did something that maybe you will consider radical, but that might be worth a try for you all: WE WENT ON WITH OUR LIVES. I was not mad at the people who worked at Santa Barbara; I did not buy a voodoo doll of Merv Griffin; I did not refuse to watch David Letterman because he had the nerve to be on NBC.

One of my favorite all-time shows was Knots Landing. I loved it. Do I still miss it? Not really; time has moved on. I sincerely feel sorry for those of you who can’t do the same. Every day is a gift; I can’t imagine wasting one minute of any of them being upset about a soap opera.

      July 28, 2012 at 8:16 pm

And once again, me, with all due respect, you are missing the point which is that the daytime serial genre is DYING and that is what the majority of us are protesting. I am sad like the rest of them that OLTL is gone and AMC, but I don’t let it ruin my day. I, too, watched, SB, GL (from time to time), ATWT (from time to time), PC (from time to time), Loving/The City, etc.

We are also tired of the networks telling us what they think we should watch. Just because they are cheap and lazy and do not want scripted drama in the daytime does not mean that we want their garbage reality/talk.

Speaking for myself, I can protest ABC all I want except for watching GH because, quite frankly, I am a mother of two young ones who does not have much time to watch their primetime or daytime, but in all reality, I am not much interested in it anyway. I want an escape so I watch GH and Y&R which, is so nice after a LONG day with my 1 and 3-year-old :-).

        July 30, 2012 at 11:33 am

As I said, YOU are the people that are missing the point.

WHY are the soaps dying??? BECAUSE PEOPLE HAVE STOPPED WATCHING. It’s as simple as that. Maybe you haven’t stopped, but the rest of the world has. Otherwise, the ratings would be better. ABC didn’t just decide one day “let’s cancel all the soap operas” for absolutely no good reason.

I can see boycotting Chick-fil-A, or a company that discriminates, or any number of GOOD reasons. THAT I totally agree with, and our country was built on things like that. But for me to boycott the entire Summer Olympics, full of inspiring REAL LIFE stories and talent, just because NBC cancelled St. Elsewhere 35 years ago, is just plain ridiculous.

This is certainly not a column about Chick-fil-A, but how did they discriminate. Did they refuse to serve anyone or treat them badly, or said that they hated anyone or any group. A Christian company who pays penalties to malls all over the country because they do not open on Sundays, simply stated that they believed in Traditional Marriage and has been stripped of his livelihood in some cities. What happened to this is a free country and Freedom of Speech or is Freedom of speech only if you agree with the government or certain groups.

    • Christy

      August 2, 2012 at 4:29 pm

oh, also – soaps are dropping off the channels not because we’re not watching them, but because networks would rather produce cheap shoddy shows, rather than put money into the budget for a much better produced and created show. They do it for primetime on much bigger budgets. It’s more of a problem with them figuring out budgets than us not watching anymore.

I’d watch Knotts Landing if it came back – no question! They’ve brought back Dallas, so it could happen.

Oh, and about NBC – except for right now, I don’t watch NBC – I still don’t like the whole Leno crappy deal that went down, and hey, NBC were the idiots that cancelled that little space show… what was it called? oh yeah. Star trek. That was dumb too.

but i know the regular broadcast channels take turns covering the olympics, and they are so special, I’ll watch them whatever channel they’re on.

He says he has NO interest in AMC & OLTL.. then sell the rights to their creator…Agnes Nixon. She’ll get them somewhere on-air.. even if it’s a cable station or the internet. I think ABC may have played a part in seeing to it that Prospect Park didn’t get the backing they needed. That was never going to happen. ABC doesn’t realize how much people (soap opera fans & others) HATE them now. I know I do. I’m soooo sick of the the self help, diet, nutrition, crafts, weight loss shows on tv. Something that strikes me as odd is that Devious Maids (Susan Lucci’s new show was not picked up by abc, yet they were able to be picked up by a cable channel. So why not let AMC and OLTL be aired on another channel? It’s fine if abc doesn’t want to deal with declining ratings…other stations would love to have these shows, and the fans would love to watch them again. WTF?

    Mr. Lee;
We fans love and want our soaps! When ABC gets the rights back from PP please do the right and respectful thing for their devoted fans who supported ABC Daytime for a lifetime. My suggestion would be to create a new, financially viable model with either short seasons, specials, or network movies based on AMC & OLTL. Thank you.

Oh, I am LOVING GH! Must see TV.

    • 1loveabcsoaps

      August 1, 2012 at 6:08 pm

Yes GH is quite amazing. If U stroll above (long post) I am suggesting the “same’ , with AMC and OneLife developing something together, because naturally you know, the whole entire cast will NEVER return. On another note, you stated that Prospect Park return the rights back to ABC. I wasn’t aware that PP had the rights to the show. As I recall it ending, ABC owns the rights to the show, and it the one that wont release them. Tell me if that changed some point ?

      • MBmomof3

        August 4, 2012 at 2:02 pm

My understanding is that PP leased the rights to AMC & OLTL for one year periods and that they revert back to ABC upon expiration of the lease (AMC in Sept 2012 & OLTL Jan 2013). If I am wrong, I hope someone corrects me, but I am pretty certain that was the arrangement. PP never owned the rights, but leased them.

      • Heather

        August 4, 2012 at 8:36 pm

MBmomof3 is 100% right. ABC never sold the rights. Prospect Park was just renting the soaps from ABC.

      • susan M.

        August 9, 2012 at 11:29 am

So if PP was just renting the soaps from abc they should put them on as a special & resolve all of the loose ends on both soap opera’s….Or combine the two soaps together….

  76. Janie

    July 31, 2012 at 10:04 am

Lets face it….ABC has become nothing but a reality show network. I personally detest reality shows and do not watch them. Revenge…I watched one season and thats it. I have been a fan of GH the majority of my life and taped it the years that I worked. If they cancel it will be goodbye ABC for me. In fact except for GH it already is. If they would cancel The View, The Chew, Good Afternoon American (such irritating hosts) and Katie Couric they would HAVE THE MONEY to keep our soaps on the air. I have never watched the Chew and don’t intend to. I didn’t watch Katie Couric on NBC, I didn’t watch her on CBS and certainly will not watch her on ABC.

I agree totally with all the comments I have read (except from me). She/he obviously is not a soap fan and who the hell cares what she thinks. I am loving the current GH. I like that they brought some of the characters from OLTL…….especially Todd. I think the storylines have gotten much better with the addition of these characters. They are not overwhelming and have added alot to the show IMO. I am just glad that GUZA is gone, as well as Brian Fons and Jill Farren Phelps. GH has the fan base to survive if the TIIC will just leave it the hell alone. I have not watched any of the replacement shows and never will.

  77. Lori Felts

    July 31, 2012 at 3:31 pm

I don’t know where you think this other show’s are going to work since us fans want the soaps back, we are watching these other shows and, will not watch these other shows ever. I don’t watch any thing in the morning, and if I do watch some thing in the morning it certainly not any thing on ABC, it’s some thing on another station, I don’t watch any thing until mid afternoon. The only time I do watch any thing on ABC is on one evening during the week and that’s it, because I do love that show. Other than that I don’t watch TV hardly at all during the day, as I am usually on the computer getting stuff done on here. but even if I where watching, I would not be watching any thing on ABC. So what is your problem about putting the soaps back on. Your not going to get any where with any of us if you don’t, which mean your rating with the other shows you have up will go down, and if you try other shows, they will fail as well, when are you going to get it that the soaps are the best choice.

  78. Christine

    August 2, 2012 at 6:04 pm

I just read from Marc Berman on TV Media Insight that apparently the folks at ABC have not disgusted the American viewers enough with THE CHEW so now they are going to give it a primetime special on Sunday, September 2.

It’s too bad GH could not have that kind of support.

  79. Jeanne

    August 4, 2012 at 6:39 am

What a jerk saying Revenge made soaps cool again! Revenge is on once a week with probably about 22 epidsodes. It’s not that same as a daily soap that’s on almost every single day of the year! These people have no clue and that makes me scared that GH is doomed!

    • dg

      August 11, 2012 at 3:26 pm

Revenge is an awesome show. Im sry but in this economic climate 5 day a week daytime serials broadcast for an hour are indeed albatrosses! That’s what we are all used to but this is a new day.

Every since soaps moved to the hour format industry insiders warned that financially this would be the death of these shows. They cost too much money to produce and today the ratings dont bring in enough revenue to justify the cost.

If daytime serials are to survive they have to change and evolve and cut the fat. The hour a day 5 day a week format needs to go. There is way too much filler and story lines have been very dumbed down because creativity is waning.

All of the soaps cancelled recently were cancelled because the networks want to save production costs! And in today’s viewing environment they bring in far less revenue than they did in the 80s and before when there were more people at home during the day watching them.

Soap fans are far too resistant to change, but if we want these shows to survive we need to open our minds.

      • Skye

        August 14, 2012 at 3:57 am

You can save that talk for the ABC did the economical and work for them. The real soaps fans stopped watching ABC except for GH which could be one of the reasons they tanked in the ratings below NBC and CBS.
        The Revolution tanked

I don’t know how much they are willing to lose to make your point because they are losing.

Anyone who claims to be proud of The Chew must be a cretin. The ads run during General Hospital for that garbage are totally disgusting as is (I believe) the show itself for I’ve never watched it. The only daytime ABC show watched in my household is now General Hospital. If ABC/D has ay sense, when GH moves to 2pm the network will dump The Chew and reboot One Life to Live at 1pm. The ABC greed in cancelling the daytime soaps is pathetic and has truly earned them bottom spot in daytime ratings. If GH is discontinued so will my ABC daytime watching vanish.

I was wondering why another network hasn’t picked them up.

      • dg

        August 11, 2012 at 3:13 pm

You guys have got to realize that this is about money. We can rage all we want but ABC/Disney owns the rights to those show and they arent about to give them up without some cash greasing their palms.

I’m sure that at some point Nixon sold the rights to them so they are no longer hers. No way the Disney share holders are going to have this huge attack of conscience and say awww poor Agnes here at the rights to your shows back.

That’s not the way business works and TV is indeed a business. Those who want AMC and OLTL need to let another network know there is a demand for these two shows. Then hopefully that network will be willing to PAY for the rights.

The rights to As The World Turns and Guiding Light have been sold to a video company that’s why you can purchase episodes of either show on DVD. But unfortunately it cost a lot less to manufacture and sell DVDs than it does to produce 2 shows for TV broadcast. But who knows, if demand continues maybe the video company can hook up with a cable network and reproduce the shows for TV.

Bottom line is that this is about money. All our sentiment about the past and our emotional connections to the shows and characters mean nothing in the business arena. We need to prove to the powers that be that these shows can make money! If we can do that, then someone else will offer the cash to buy them and bring them back to TV.

Dallas went off the air in 1991 and now its back 21 yrs later because the owners of the rights thought their would still be an audience for it! That’s how the business works. It’s not fair, its not considerate of fan loyalty but thats how it works.

hey I’m not stupid I totally get that it’s about money, just venting my anger over the whole thing is all. And it can’t just be about the money because if that were true then the soaps would still be on the air. Because If I’m not mistaken, WE the fans that watched everday and buy products from the sponsers and such made them a lot of money but I no that’s just a part of what ever the hell went wrong on ABC. So until ABC starts listening to the fans again, I will not watch the network at all, I’ll just continue to watch CBS and NBC like I’ve been doing since they cancled my soaps. Just hope others that are outraged will do the same.

If ABC does not want to revive AMC or OLTL then why do they get back the rights one year after their cancellation, AMC This Sept OLTL in January???? PS I want watch the Chew or Katie or anything except General Hospital . If every soap fan tunes them out like I will changes will be made.

ABC will loose more and more viewers. Soaps are as American as Baseball, and you think axing 2 soaps that have been on air since I was born AND taking cast members from one of them and using them and old SL’s btw is going to fly with US FANS THAT MAKE YOUR MONEY FOR YOU……think again.

Bottom line is that people need to give up on the idea that
ABC is going to return OLTL and AMC, they are gone! Whether we like it or not ( and I watched AMC + OLTL off and on since the late 70s.) The only hope for those shows returning to screens is for Disney to sell the rights.
In January the rights for both shows will revert from Prospect Park back to ABC/Disney. Instead of raging against ABC fans that want these shows back need to make their voices known to another network or cable venue. That new venue will have to offer Disney enough money to persuade them to sell. But honestly I dont think any other network is interested in taking the financial risks to buy or license the rights and to recreate two soaps that were cancelled in this financial climate.

Since Cartini ( Frank Valentini + Ron Carlavati ) have Disney’s attention they had damn well better step up their game and impress them with ratings! So far they are not doing so. No matter how happy some fans may be with the show the numbers are still pretty dismal. GH still has barely 2 million viewers!
Dont let Paul Lee or any Disney rep fool you. Disney is about saving production costs. Anne Sweeney wanted to eliminate all three soaps from ABC to save costs and she and Bob Eiger have the final say in this matter.

If Good Morning America can match GH’s sad 2 million viewers ABC would cancel GH and replace it with GAA without batting an eye! Cartini needs to step up their game and stop concentrating on transplanting AMC + OLTL refugees, They need to concentrate on stories that will regain GH’s core audience. Most of that audience was gone by early in the new millennium. GH’s last highest ratings recently were in the early to mid 90s.

They need at least a solid 3 million viewers I think. GH is still very much living on borrowed time. Cartini better realize that and stop playing games.

trust me I see what’s going on and I know GH is on it’s way off the air as well. These guys don’t seem to want soaps on ABC anymore and that’s the only reason I can see hiring to guys from another soap that was cancled and IMO are the reason OLTL sucked the last few years it was on. The totally destroy a great soap with horrible story lines and come one a musical on a soap, give me a break. And now FB and RC are bringing un-original ideas to Gh that didn’t work on OLTL. ABC can cut cost by firing these to idiots to start with.

Skye you comments are very uninformed. ABC’s daytime ratings are bad merely because they put junk on the air. But guess what GH , AMC and OLTL were far below CBS’s ratings when they are on the air for most of this decade.
Days and NBC have been nearly dead last also for yrs now. You are very out of touch with your ratings info.
This lame boycott of ABC is not winning anything. Disney owns ABC. Disney is a multimillion dollar corporation that isnt going down because of a few soaps. They made millions with the Avengers, Pirates of The Caribbean etc., not to mention the enormous success of Once Upon a Time, etc.

People so need to get real and give up on Disney reproducing AMC + OLTL they are done. Read the recent articles from their reps. Disney has moved on and all the boycotting and such isnt changing their minds.

The only hope for those shows is if Disney decides to sell or license the rights once the rights to both shows revert back to Disney. But I don’t see any networks beating down ABC’s door to purchase them.
And it never ceases to amaze me how fans dont understand that this is a business it runs on money not sentimentality and viewer’s promise of support.
AMC and OLTL were cancelled to save production money. When both these shows went off the air each of them had around 2 million viewers.
I sry but I agree with the networks that that doesnt justify the millions of dollars they put into producing these shows, especially in our lousy economy.
Its done, time to move on. SMH.

I am sorry Mr. Lee but, you are wrong. If ABc Network would just give our cancel soaps 1 year you wourld see the ratings increase.

i don’t believe that your (ABC Network) took in account that we (the fans) DVR our soaps or watch them at work on our cell phone or catched up on the weekends.

I am asking the Network to please give our soaps another chance.

‘Strahan, Sara and Keke’ Canceled by ABC; Show Aired In Timeslot That Once Housed ‘All My Children’

No matter a network tries to do, replacing All My Children, which ran for 41 years on ABC has remained as everyone that follows the world of daytime drama knows, problematic.  Now come word via Page Six that Strahan, Sara and Keke has been canceled.

The show hosted by Michael Strahan, Sara Haines and Keke Palmer if you recall, replaced the foodie show, The Chew which ran for seven seasons and was the first show to air in the timeslot that belonged for over four decades to All My Children.

Back in March of this year, Strahan, Sara and Keke took a break to make way for ABC’s News  Pandemic: What You Need to Know, a daily coronavirus report anchored by Amy Robach, Dr. Jen Ashton and sometimes TJ Holmes.

However, because the show did well in that two-week experimental run it morphed into GMA 3: What You Need to Know.  The new version of the show also talked about hot topics in the current news cycle, as well.

ABC’s Catherine McKenzie began producing the “GMA3” show four months ago and the network officially announced her as Executive Producer of the program on Thursday.

While ABC has yet to officially announce Strahan, Sara and Keke is over, a spokesperson told Page Six: “We’re proud of our teams at ‘SSK’ and ‘GMA3’ and how quickly they transitioned to producing a daily show to give people the news and information they need during an unprecedented pandemic, and conversations continue about how the show will evolve in the months ahead.”

It appears that Strahan, Sara and Keke won’t be returning; the future as many of their staff have transitioned over to ‘GMA 3’ with producers from ABC News Live, (the streaming division), helmed by McKenzie.

As for the futures of Strahan, Haines and Palmer; Strahan will continues to host Good Morning America, and they are all actively under contract with the network.

So, what do you think of  ‘Strahan, Sara and Kek’e being replaced by ‘GMA 3: What You  Need to Know’?  How long do you think that show will last in the timeslot once taken up by residents of Pine Valley? Comment below.

Eva LaRue Talks On Her Daytime Emmy Nomination, And Opens Up About The Loss Of John Callahan

For Eva LaRue, the past two months have been some of the most emotionally gut-wrenching and challenging of her life, following the passing of her ex-husband, father of her child, and dearest friend, John Callahan (Ex-Edmund, All My Children). The outpouring of support she has received not only from her former AMC cast mates, but the soap world in general illustrates just how dear Eva is to all of us, and how many people had special memories of their time with John.

While mourning the loss of Callahan along with their daughter, Kaya, there was some heartwarming and re-affirming news that any actress would love to hear. Eva was nominated for a Daytime Emmy in the Outstanding Guest Performer in a Drama Series for her work as Celeste Rosales on CBS’ The Young and the Restless, and she is great company as her former AMC co-star Michael E. Knight (Ex-Tad) is also nominated along with her for his work on General Hospital.

The coronavirus pandemic has hit our country and world hard, but through it All My Children virtual reunions emerged as fans were engaged by the content, transported to happier times that brought them back to familiar faces in Pine Valley in which Eva participated along with her good friends, Kelly Ripa, Mark Consuelos and so many more, thanks to the EW. com weeklong event which concluded on Friday.

Michael Fairman TV talked with Eva in this very candid, at times heartbreaking, and open conversation where she shares details into the final days of her beloved John, her last moments with him, and how she tried to plan a memorial in his honor during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For so many of us, 2020 has certainly seen more lows then highs, but in the end for Eva, to receive a nomination now (an award she was last nominated for back in 1997 as Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for her work as Dr Maria Santos on All My Children) couldn’t have come at a better time. Here now is our conversation with Eva.

I’ve been thinking so much about you.  I’m glad we could do this, and in the midst of the tragedy of losing John Callahan, and then receiving a Daytime Emmy nomination.  What was your reaction when you learned you were nominated in a category with none other than your former AMC castmate and good friend, Michael E. Knight (Ex-Tad, AMC, now Martin, GH)?

EVA:  Oh, I know!  He’s the first person I texted!  I was like, “Congratulations, Michael!  Did you ever in a million years think that you and I would be in the same category of anything?”  Then I said, “And when you win this, can I just borrow it for the weekend just to dress it up and take pictures with it… just want to borrow it, just babysit the trophy for a weekend, please?” (Laughs)

Photo: JPI

What did you end up submitting that landed you the nomination for your role as Celeste on Y&R?

EVA: I submitted a scene with Peter Bergman (Jack, Y&R), who I have been friends for 30 years, if not more, and in all that time we had never worked together.  I met him when I was married to John O’Hurley (Ex- Dr. James Grainger) because John was over at The Young and the Restless at the time.  I went to a Christmas party with John to Peter and Mariellen’s house, and do you know who else was there?  Lisa Rinna (Ex-Billie, Days), and it was before she had gotten Days of Our Lives. She was dating Peter Barton (Ex-Scott Grainger, Y&R) at the time. We both ended up on soaps at the same time.  So, I submitted a scene with Peter, who is amazing, warm and open and such a great actor. Then I submitted a scene with my on-screen daughter Sasha Calle (Lola, Y&R) – I love that girl, and another one with Michelle Stafford (Phyllis, Y&R) who has also been my great friend for a couple of decades. The other scene I put on my reel was with me and Jordi Vilasuso (Rey, Y&R) who I also adore.  He is awesome and such a sweetheart.  I only had two months worth of material to draw upon.  So, I just submitted the scenes that I liked the best, and they all were within story, and all made sense.

Where is Celeste supposed to be now?

EVA:  She went back to Florida, and that was that. I would never say never to anything, but it was always supposed to be a short stint, and it was great.

So not only is it you and Michael E. Knight, but Jeffery Vincent Parise, Chrishell Stause, and Elissa Kapneck. This Guest Performer category is loaded!

EVA:  I know! I know and love, Chrishell (Ex-Amanda) because we worked together on All My Children, too, right before I left, and she is a doll.  She just might be the sweetest, kindest, girl on the planet.  She literally might be the sweetest person who ever lived!  I don’t know the other two nominees personally.  So, I’m excited for them too.  It’s such a diverse category.  It’s just really fun to be nominated with all of them.

Photo: Hallmark Channel

You were nominated before, though, for your work as Maria on All My Chldren during the emotional baby switch storyline; working opposite Susan Lucci (Ex-Erica) for a lot in it.

EVA:  Yes.  I was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for All My Children, and I was nominated for Best Original Song.  I wrote a song when Maria came ‘back from the dead’ to All My Children, with a producer friend of mine from Miami Sound Machine.

Photo: Live with Kelly Ryan

So, you’ve been doing all of these All My Children virtual reunions, which is so interesting that in this pandemic, people are looking for content, and they dip back into these beloved shows.  Was it fun doing the Santos Family reunion with everybody?

EVA:  Oh yeah, it was really, really fun.  I only saw in the big picture everybody else’s photo who was a part of it, and the people who I actually do hang out with the most, and see the most, and talk to the most, are Kelly Ripa (Ex-Hayley), Mark Consuelos (Ex-Mateo), and Sydney Penny (Ex-Julia).  I don’t see Sydney as much, but I do see her probably once every two years at least, but Sarah Michelle Geller (ExKendall) I see all the time and talk to all the time.  Kelly, Mark, and Sarah are the ones who walked me through that first week when John Callahan passed.  They literally were on the phone with me, the three of them, almost every day, but I got beautiful outreach, from what seemed like everyone.  This is when no matter how many years have passed since you have been in daytime, that the daytime family as a group – there used to be fifteen shows, now there are four – and people have bounced around and they are on other shows- – but the entire soap opera community reached out,   I cannot even tell you how much that meant to me.  It was overwhelming, and it was really, spectacularly beautiful.

Photo: JPI

I hope it was some solace to you knowing how much people loved John, and also that they love and care so deeply for you.

EVA:  I mean, people who did not even work with John reached out.  Every soap was represented by getting a hold of me, sending a text or a phone call, or if they didn’t have my personal information, they tweeted, or whatever it was… literally from every reach of soapdom.  It was amazing.

And your relationship with John was amazing with all of the ups and downs you went through; that you remained such dear friends.

EVA:  We remained really great friends all the way.

Photo: JPI

I so remember when the two of you first got together and it was this storybook real life soap couple romance.  John was always so sweet to me.  I was so, so sad, and you know, my heart just broke for you.

EVA:  I think it was just such a shock.  I don’t think anybody, and even Kaya were talking about it, because she graduated this week, and her dad is not here.  We’re not having a graduation, because of COVID-19, which sucks on top of it, but we were just kind of talking through the feelings of it.  She said, “You know what’s weird?  I guess I never pictured dad getting old, and I always wondered why, and now I know.”  When I would get on John about his heart or his health, he used to always say, ‘Oh, don’t worry Evala, (he always called me “Evala”).  I’m going to be here.  I’m going to be here a long time.  I’m fine.  I’m going to be here to walk Kaya down the aisle and see her kids and all that.  Stop worrying,” Every time he said it to me, something in my gut said, “I don’t think he is.  I don’t think he is,” but I always just dismissed that.  But never in my wildest dreams did I think John wouldn’t make it to her high school graduation.  He was only 66.

Photo: JPI

I had heard you ended up running to Palm Springs to be near John.  I can’t even imagine what that must have been like.

EVA:  The only good thing about this pandemic is that we had been shut down for only two weeks at that point.  Kaya and I got in the car.  John had some heart procedures the day before, on a Thursday.  I called him in the morning before he went in for the procedure.  I said, “Call me as soon as you get out of there.  Call me as soon as you come-to again, and you’re good,” and he said, “Okay, I will.”  I said, “I’m going to send Kaya out to you on Friday for the weekend, just so you have somebody to hang out and watch you, and I might come out too,” And then, I said, “Maybe, I’ll come down too in case you are feeling weak, just to watch out for you for the weekend.”   So, he called me after the procedure.   I said, “I cannot believe they sent you home! You just had some major heart stuff done.”  He said, “Oh no, they said I’m fine.  It was just run-of-the-mill heart stuff, angiogram…”  I was like, “Are you sure?”  He said, “Yeah, I’m fine.  I’m just tired.  I’m going to go to sleep.”  I said, “Do you want me to send Kaya out tonight?” and he was like, “No, no, no.  Send her tomorrow.”  So, in the morning, I called him at 9:00am.  No answer.  I texted him.  He always texted me like Johnny on the spot, and then texts me immediately back.  So, I call him again at 10.  Nothing.  His best friend calls me about a half-hour later, “Hey, I talked to John at about 8:00 this morning.  He said he was feeling really, really shitty and was going to go back to the hospital, and then, I texted him again at like 8:30 to just tell him something, and he hasn’t texted me back, and he always texts me immediately back.”  I said, “Oh my, God, I’ve been trying to get a hold of him for two hours; he hasn’t texted me back,”   I said, “You know what, I’ll call you back.”  So, I called his friend who lives down the street from John, and I said, “Go to his house, please right this second, knock on the door, jump the fence, knock on his bedroom, he might be asleep, I don’t know.”  So, he gets there, nobody is answering.  I said, “Break into the house please.  So, he did, and John was collapsed in the bathroom.  They called the paramedics, and as soon as they called me back and said, “John is unresponsive in the bathroom,” Kaya and I threw everything in the car, and what usually takes us two and a half hours without traffic, we made it down there from Los Angeles in an hour and forty-five minutes.

Photo: JPI

I don’t know how you made it down there in one piece. Thank, God!

EVA:  I drove so fast, like literally broke all land speed records and thank God because we got there just in time.  He was in emergency.  He hadn’t been put up in ICU yet, where we wouldn’t have been able to see him.  They weren’t going to let us in the hospital.  Thank God the person answering the door was an All My Children fan.  She was the one saying, “Sorry, no one is allowed in the hospital, no one can come in,” and I was like, “No, no, no, my ex-husband just came in.”  She said, “Was it Edmund?” and I said, “Yes, it was Edmund!”  She said, “Okay, follow me.”  Thank God for All My Children.  Thank God.  So, we followed this woman secretly, and we get to spend a half-hour with him in Emergency.  He was already on life-support, totally unresponsive, but we got to play John his favorite music, we got to just sit there and hold his hand and talk to him, and tell him how much we loved him.  Sarah Michelle Gellar called right when we were in the hospital in Emergency, and she said, “Put the phone by his ear,” so I put the phone by his ear, and she talked to John too, and she told him how much she loved him.  She used to always call him “GP”, which was short of grandpa, because she came on the show when she was 15, and she didn’t have a dad, and John acted like a dad to her – but she used to always call him “grandpa”, and he hated “grandpa”, so he was like, “You can call me “GP”, but not grandpa,” so she always called him GP.  I just put the phone by John’s ear, and what was crazy is that when she talked to him, his feet started twitching.  He started moving his feet.  Then, when Kaya was talking to him about Yankee season, he started moving his feet.  We were kind of hopeful that something was changing for the better.  We had about a half-hour with him, and then, they took him up to ICU, and then, we knew we couldn’t see him again.  They called us later that night that he had passed.

Photo: JPI

I am just so thankful that you got to see John one last time.

EVA:  I thank God every day that we got to say goodbye, because if we hadn’t gotten there in time to say goodbye, I just don’t know.

It’s very rare that a couple after a divorce, who have a child, and went from romance to dear friends, end up maintaining that relationship so many years later in their lives.  I know so many people who were together at one point in their lives, for years, and they don’t even talk to each other now.

EVA:  Well, you know, like any divorce, the first four years afterwards were super contentious but then, by year five, we kind of had this major breakthrough, and from then on, he was one of my closest friends, and one of the things we always kept alive for each other was we loved to  dance together. We fell in love, I think, dancing because originally our characters on AMC met at this country-western bar, and we had to take country line dancing lessons on the show.  They hired a choreographer for us so that during those scenes where we were falling in love, we would actually be able to do a two-step! So, we went out and practiced at Denim and Diamonds, which was a big country-western place in New York City at the time.  We used to go out with a whole group of us.  It was me, and Teresa Blake (Ex-Gloria) and Kelly Ripa, and her boyfriend at the time, Winsor Harmon (Ex-Del), sometimes Walt Willey (Ex-Jack); we just had a whole crew of us who would go out country dancing.  John and I also loved singing together.  He had the most amazing gravely kind of rockstar voice, but his real talent was harmonizing.  He could harmonize to anything.  So, when he would come over, we would sit in the kitchen and sing, and sing, and sing until the late hours because that’s what we loved to do, and that’s what he loved to do.  That’s one of my favorite last memories of us.  He was just over the month before, and Kaya’s bedroom is near the kitchen, so she came out and was like, “Can you two shut up?”  It was like two in the morning and we were still singing in the kitchen. (Laughs)  John was my dear friend and my confidant.

Photo: ABC

Were you able to have some kind of service during this stay-at-home pandemic we are all dealing with, in order to mourn the loss of John?

EVA:  It’s been so crazy.  We couldn’t even have a funeral.  That’s what made it all the more heartbreaking.  There were less than twenty of us, and we just got on a Zoom call and memorialized John.   I thought we were going to do a big Zoom memorial, but it seemed so overwhelming and so impersonal, it just was rubbing us wrong in every way.  Every way we were looking at it, we were like, “Oh my, God, we just can’t.”  We wanted to invite everybody he had ever worked with, and we were like, “No, we want to do that when everything can open back up again, and invite every person, and have a party” because John was always the life of every party.  Maybe we can do that in the fall or next year.  I kept trying to write something for the small memorial we did do for three days.  I kept coming back to this one song, because John was always the consummate bartender, too.  I sang a song that Bette Midler sang on the very last episode of Johnny Carson.  It was “One for My Baby (and One More for the Road)” and it’s about a bartender who has got a big personality and a lot to say.   I changed some of the words around a bit just to reflect who John was, and so, I ended up singing for it instead of speaking.  We always talked about that last episode of Carson; how stunningly emotional it was when Bette sang that song to kind of sing Johnny off for of all of his years on the air.  So, that’s what I did and because we loved to sing together, it just made sense.

Photo: HutchinsPhoto

I do think you touched upon something, earlier, too.  I don’t think any other genre would have that kind of unbridled camaraderie.  It’s such a family, like you said.  I don’t think you would find that quite like this; certainly in show business.

EVA:  I really don’t think you can. Even though there is always a good amount of competition in the soaps as well; between the soaps it’s like they are any sports team, but there is always a level of respect, love, and familial connection within the community.  I think that is why they have stood the test of time.  I really do think that is what hooks our audience, that is what keeps them there after all of these years, even though unfortunately the genre is antiquated looking, there is something about it that is nostalgic, familial, and comfortable for people.

Photo: JPI

Every time I talk about All My Children, why do you think everybody go ga-ga for it, when it’s been off the air for several years now?

EVA:  It speaks to people’s childhoods.  It speaks to how we grew up.  You can’t undo nostalgia.  You can’t.  It’s in the way we grew up, the things we loved, the things that we scheduled our lives around, the people we fell in love with on the shows that we watched, who we cared about and loved their storylines. I grew up watching All My Children, General Hospital, and Days of Our Lives.

It must have been a spectacular moment for you when you realized you were actually in Pine Valley and a member of the cast of All My Children then?

EVA:  It was amazing.  I was a fan when I got the show.  I was a straight up fan.  I fangirled walking through that dressing room hallway for the first time! I was trying to keep it in check, but you know … (Laughs)

Photo: JPI

So, in closing, you would say, “Thrilled to be nominated”?

EVA:  Yes.  So fun.  It has really been a rollercoaster of a couple of months here.  That nomination was literally the bright, shining spot in all of this.

So, happy to hear Eva is in the running for a Daytime Emmy? Were you moved by Eva’s sentiments she shared on her relationship with the late John Callahan? Do you miss Pine Valley’s Dr. Maria Santos? Share your thoughts in the comment section below.
