Allison Lanier Exits The Young and the Restless as Summer Newman
In a surprise move, The Young and the Restless looks to be giving the character of Summer Newman a rest, as actress Allison Lanier confirmed her exit from the top-rated soap with a message posted on X on Thursday.
The Daytime Emmy nominee shared, “Hi guys!! This Friday, May 2nd, will be my last episode on Y&R! I’ve loved the journey and learned so much but it’s time to grow in a different direction… very grateful for all of the Y&R fans who have supported me.”
Lanier took over the role of Nick (Joshua Morrow) and Phyllis’ (Michelle Stafford) daughter back in May of 2022, following in the footsteps of two-time Daytime Emmy winner, Hunter King who played the role on and off beginning in 2012 until her departure.

Currently, in story, Summer isn’t making much headway with her ex-husband, Kyle Abbott (Michael Mealor), who is in a relationship with Claire (Hayley Erin). In this photo from Lanier’s final episode airing this Friday above, it looks like Summer is saying goodbye to Harrison (Redding Munsell) and Kyle.
Reports have indicated that Y&R has no immediate plans to recast the part, but as you know in soapland anything is possible. The series does not comment on actor’s contract status with the show.
Back in 2024, Michael Fairman TV chatted with Allison during our annual Daytime Emmy Nominations Special livestream last year, where she spoke on receiving a nomination for the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series category and who helped her get acclimated to life on the set of the CBS soap.

Lanier shared, “I got so lucky. But, I really do think that Susan Walters (Diane), Peter Bergman (Jack) and Michelle Stafford (Phyllis), these absolute legends were so open with me, gave me all kinds of advice and really held me up when I was first starting – and not to mention – Michael Mealor, as he is more of my peer and he really showed me the ropes in such a personal way – so those four, I got to thank them!”
So, what do you think of Allison Lanier wrapping her run as Summer Newman? Will you miss her in the role? Do you think Y&R should recast the role sooner than later? Share your thoughts via the comment section.
Bring back Hunter King in 2026. She is very busy now with new projects. Hunter King is a wonderful actress and she has won Daytime Emmy.
What the hell?? I am sure we will learn more later. All the best!
Learn more, what? She already announced why she’s leaving: it was her choice. Not sure what else needs to be learned?
Scott, when the story first broke elsewhere, they didn’t provide the information that we have now. They only said her last episode will be this Friday. She thanked everyone and said she is looking forward to other opportunities. Michael Fairman’s story didn’t break until later. It is surprising when it is announced that a front burner character will be exiting the show and the last day will be a few days after the news breaks. If she’s moving on for better things, as I previously posted I wish her the best. But, it is a little strange – My opinion.
No offence, but her tweet never changed. Her tweet always maintained it was time to grow in a different direction.
And you know what Scott, that’s fine. Everyone needs to grow at some point and as I previously stated, I wish her all the best. I never inferred that there was anything nefarious going on. Enjoy your day.
Not everyone has as much free time as you do.
I know really
Not everyone has as much free time as you do.
What is wrong with this show ! Claire I is such an unnecessary character has zero chemistry with Kyle I don’t get why you would send Phyllis daughter with Nick packing this show needs new blood in the writing department
I agree too much emphasis is being placed on Claire. I don’t see Hunter King returning. I think she is doing pretty well with other projects.
Richard, did you read the article? Never did it once say she was fired; her own statement, in fact, leans into it being her decision to leave after a three-year contract.
I get it but the writing is on the wall why would most people want to stay at yandr this sometimes great show is currently a show about nothing
And I never said she was fired
I don’t get why you would send Phyllis daughter with Nick packing
This is what you said; “sending her packing” is the wording you chose. They did not choose to; she chose to leave, and they simply are opting not to recast at this time.
Oh sorry But I still feel there is more to it especially since we hear on a Tuesday her last day is Friday Yandr is becoming a hard watch the last interesting story was Phil’s and Sharon held captive but very small fallout and not a story by any means since Redecorating a room is not a story
You must be a blast to hangout with.
Never had anyone complain about my company.
Will you 2 stfu …
I’m going to miss Allison (Summer), she was my favorite actress on Y&R!! I don’t think she should be recast now in hopes Allison will return
If I were Alison, I would welcome this change so that she can try out other opportunities, for Summer has turned into a very flat character of pouting and whining and with very little reason for any significant believable angst or love. I actually thought she worked nicely with Connor who plays Chance, though their storyline was significantly sidelined. Had Martin kidknapped Summer and Chance saved her, then that could have lead to some excitement, but the writers continue to juggle all of the corporate mix-ups, which are a yawn-fest!!!
Allison Lanier was perfectly cast to refocus the role of Summer, and she was not used to her full potential. It’s looking like she did her three-year contract and decided to go on to better things. Good on her.
I personally got the feeling YR didnt renew her IMHO. ‘Time to grow’ doesnt mean she walked away. It means she’s looking ahead to next thing. That fits with not renewed (ie fired) or that she decided to go.
Right? She’s was competent in her own small way but they need a leading lady for the role.
I totally agree with you. I think she grew into the role of Summer and did a very good job. But, the writing wasn’t there. It may have been contract negotiation time and maybe she didn’t like was being offered (contract wise and storyline). They write her out swiftly and give us this foolishness with Kyle/Claire/Audra. Y&R needs help. They need to look at storylines and characters that are not working. Summer is a character you just throw off the canvas and maybe Cole is on his way out too.
Bring back Hunter King. She did an amazing job as Summer. Allison was ok,but Hunter had the dynamic that made her believable as Summer.
It’s supposed to be Summer and Kyle not Claire and Kyle! Josh Griffith needs a ghost writer or a co HW
Lovely lady boy quick but this show is the bottom of the cellar let’s keep on focusing on people 84 and 72 fighting an endless bull about crap nobody cares about !!! Darling run don’t look back !
I’m OK with her leaving. She never had the zing, the fire, or the spark of the original summer. Allision was Blahhhh.
she was a very good recast
She was terrible bring back Hunter King
I’m surprised to see Summer leave as it’s a central character. I guess Marchetti is also leaving.
If the boring twosome – Kyle & Claire – do move in together, it would have been more interesting to have Summer still around to see her reaction etc.
Alison was a good recast and I don’t think this is a character should just disappear.
Get rid of Claire and keep Summer.
I think clair should go.
I do wish you well. But it’s stupid to take Summer out of the equation for any long period of time. That’s just ridiculous. And Claire should be the one to leave. Sorry but she’s just to stiff. Actually all of yaw are getting stiff on the romantic parts of the show. There use to be for real stuff but it’s been gone for a while. Good luck. I think Y&R is fixing to go off air like the Guiding light and as the world turns
Will she be replaced or is this the end for Summer? — ( aside—who dresses Claire? Who’s her hair dresser?)
