On an all-new episode of Soapy Hosted by Rebecca Budig and Greg Rikaart, dropping on Tuesday, July 22nd, Beyond the Gates executive producer, Sheila Ducksworth, is the very special guest where she discusses how daytime’s newest soap opera set up shop and put down its roots in Atlanta, Georgia, plus lining-up the team behind the scenes and the cast in front of the camera.

In an exclusive clip, Ducksworth explains, why when all the other daytime soap operas tape in Los Angeles, she choose Atlanta as the home of Fairmont Crest. “There are a lot of factors,” shared the EP.  “I knew that I could shoot the show in Atlanta. I knew that there were a lot of great people and great talent, great facilities there. So, I knew that we could make this work. We’re over at Assembly Studios and we are the first inhabitants for our production offices as well as for our stages.”

Sheila added “We’re able to customize it and make it exactly what we needed and it’s just fantastic. It’s just a great environment. There was a lot of planning that went into it, and the people that would lead the departments. I have to say all those folks, the heads of the departments, they’re incredible.”

Speaking of the department heads at Beyond the Gates, many of whom have held positions on previous daytime soaps have made joined its ranks as Rebecca Budig noted to Greg Rikaart. “She took Julie Carruthers, who was our producer from All My Children and Jeresa Featherstone, our wardrobe designer at the The Bold and the Beautiful, who I knew for like two weeks before she left (for Beyond the Gates),”recalled Budig.

When speaking of the cast including: Cady McClain (Pamela), Tamara Tunie (Anita), and Mike Manning (Smitty) and more, who all have worked on the soaps previous to Beyond the Gates, Ducksworth reiterated, “It’s a great group of people.”

In a previous preview clip released over the weekend, Ducksworth spoke on how the cast of Beyond the Gates was assembled, “We’ve wanted it to feel really accessible to everybody. There’s some specificity obviously to the show, but what we’re really dealing in and dwelling in is a universality. People who live inside the gates as well as people who live outside the gates. We have our matriarch and our patriarch with Tamara Tunie and Clifton Davis (Vernon). We are so fortunate. We were so specific about what we wanted, and we were fortunate enough to find the people that we found to populate this world.”

Duckworth also noted, “It was no small task and thanks to our casting director, Kim Coleman, and obviously we had a lot of participation, ultimately from CBS and CBS studios, Claudia Lyon, Executive Vice President, Talent and Casting, CBS Entertainment. It’s been like everybody kind of rolled up their sleeves and wrapped their arms around,”What is this task going to look like? What’s the feel of it going to be?” We were fortunate to get Tamara Tunie, as well as Clifton Davis. They lead this family like nobody else could, as the matriarch and the patriarch.”

Soapy Hosted by Rebecca Budig and Greg Rikaart is a new audio and video podcast that dives deep into the legacy, fandom, and enduring appeal of soap operas. Available on Audacy or wherever podcasts are found, full video episodes are released every Tuesday through September 30 on the CBS brand YouTube channel.

Honestly, I think shooting in Georgia is refreshing and the best decision they could have chosen. A lot of the local talent they have found are excellent, as well. And from the looks of it, Assembly Studios is one of the best studios out there right now, so kudos to them for going there, as well.

My current ranking of how I’m enjoying the soaps I watch:
1. DOOL (Love it but miss Ron C)
2. BTG
3. GH
4. Y&R (never recall it being worse)

I agree with your top 2 and yes miss ron c I have to put bold at 3 I gave up on gh a long long time ago and boy are you on point about yandr they could use Ron c I’ve never seen it this bad myself ! Really makes you miss another world Santa Barbara world turns and one life

Thanks for responding, Richard!
I’ve never followed B&B. Goes back to my VCR days when I could only record one show at a time and I was taping Days! Honestly, I pretty much hate watch GH as I despise the characters of Sonny, Carly & Jason. Still, GH is tons better than what passes as Y&R these days…

BEYOND THE GATES: The Cotillion Brings High-Society and Debs; as Shots Rings Out In Warehouse

Published

In a standout episode of Beyond the Gates, the beauty, the heritage, and the wealthy gathered for Samantha Richardson’s (Najah Jackson) cotillion debut. But that’s not all, the writers found a way to juxtapose this major event in a young Black woman’s life with the sting operation that was going down where Jacob Hawthorne (Jibre Hordges), who is undercover, and the cops are going to nail the leaders of the illegal blood plasma operation, once and for all

What made this episode so good was when you went to the danger of the cops outside the drop point, and Jacob and the bad guys inside, you felt like you were watching a primetime procedural drama; especially the way the scenes were directing and the camera work. Then, you bounce back to the heartfelt cotillion and what it means for the young woman and the high society families in Fairmont Crest.

It should not go without saying, that the Beyond the Gates, wardrobe, hair and make-up department did a phenomenal job with the cotillion and the casting of the debs and their escorts. Pretty much perfection. And let’s not forget about when the debs and their guys busted a move right in the middle of the formal dance. Nice touch!

COTILLION SYNCHRONICITY

In story, Donnell (Alex Cheeks) is late which freaks out Samantha and Vanessa (Lauren Buglioli). No one knows where he could be. Chelsea (RhonniRose Mantilla) and Kat (Colby Nixon) step up to be the hosts for the proceedings when the usual host is unable to perform her duties due to falling ill.

When it’s time for the debs to be announced one by one, Francesca (Madison Alsobrook) steps on Samantha’s gown intentionally, but lucky for her, Donnell has arrived just in time to catch her from hitting the floor. After each deb is presented, they are each joined by their escort and make a trip around the dance floor. Next, came the Waltz which was precision by all involved, with a little 2026 dance moves sprinkled in the middle of it.

Jessica’s (Camryn Jade) parents did not like the fun of the dance and called her a “video vixen” and an embarrassment to the family. Nathan (Brennen Suttle) insults Samantha which leads to the young man being told to stay away from Terrell (Jaden Lucas Miller) by Ted (Keith D. Robinson). Next, June (Jasmine Burke) comes upon Nathan drinking from a flask! (Don’t tell me he is going to be drunk behind the wheel of a car and hit someone?)

Upset, Jessica tells Tyrell they should go be alone together and she knows where they can go to finish what they started the other day. However, it’s time for the reveal of the Platinum Deb! To do the honors is … Deanna McBride (Angela Fairley).

MAN DOWN

Elsewhere, outside the warehouse and inside the surveillance car, Elon (Malachi Malik) and Marcel (Darryl W. Handy) keep tabs on what is about to go down, and Randy (Maurice P. Kerry), who was sent by Joey ends up arrested in the back seat of the cop car. Inside, Grayson (Jordi Vilasuso) and Jacob prepare for the delivery and big meeting. Derek (Ben Gavin) shows up having followed Grayson there and sees Jacob.

Dr Lia Whitmore (Cecelia Specht) arrives, saying she wants to be a part the big presentation to the higher-ups. She comes upon Jacob, who reveals himself. Knowing she’s caught, she tells Jacob she will strike a deal with him. Suddenly, Ren (Donny Carrington) gets a call about a leak and decides they need to end the life of Grayson! Ren screams they will all pay for double crossing him.

Suddenly, guns are drawn as the police arrive. Derek tries to stop someone from being shot, but at the end of the episode we see Jacob down on the ground. Beyond the Gates EP’s, Sheila Ducksworth and Julie Carruthers previously teased that someone will die this week, but who will it be? Is it Derek? Lia? Grayson? Jacob, or someone else?

Now below, what did you think of the cotillion episode part 1? Who will be named Platinum Deb? Who do you think doesn’t make it out alive at the warehouse? Share your thoughts in the comment section below.

YOUNGER GENERATION GETS THE SPOTLIGHT

Speaking on what viewers will see the week of May 18-22,  Sheila Ducksworth, who is also the president of CBS Studios/NAACP Venture, shared to TV Insider, “These episodes are really like nothing that we feel like people have seen before. Yes, there have been cotillions on television before, but the way that we’re doing it, in the milieu in which it’s set, is just incredibly unique. It’s an institution that has existed in Black America for over 100 years, and it really speaks to legacy, it speaks to culture, it speaks to heritage, and also resilience.”

Ducksworth added, “Tune in because there is importance to what we’re saying with the show, but also just the sheer enjoyment of being able to see what one of these cotillions looks like and feels like. I think people will just be beside themselves; we definitely are working for that to be the goal. You’ll see a lot of stuff with the younger set that you haven’t seen before, and a lot of that plays into the cotillion and then beyond the cotillion.”

DANGER, DANCING AND SHOCKERS

However, Julie Carruthers notes that there is another major plot point about to explode, now that Jacob (Jibre Hordges) is close to nabbing Dr. Lia Whitmore (Cecelia Specht) and company for the illegal blood plasma ring.

“We have the culmination of the mystery that Jacob’s  been involved with and I’m not going to tell you much more, but there’s a big event happening the same night as the Cotillion and the Cotillion is also fraught with its own surprises and unexpected disappointments,” teased Carruthers to Soaps.com. “It’s a lot of eventful things happening all at the same time. Amazing clothes, the girls are stunning, the dance is phenomenal. The music’s spectacular. It’s a beautiful, beautiful event.”

‘Beyond the Gates’ Star Trisha Mann-Grant Opens Up About Difficult Scene, Getting Her Son Off the Streets, and Plight of the Homeless

Published

on

By

Trish Mann-Grant has wowed audiences with her portrayal of Leslie Thomas since hitting our screens last year on Beyond the Gates. The talented actress has made everyone in the soap opera genre take notice of her performances as Leslie is a true instigator who carries secrets and will ruffle the feathers of most anyone in and around Fairmont Crest, if given half the chance.

In real-life, Trisha has publicly spoken about the time period of her life when she found herself homeless. In fact, during a livestream chat on the Michael Fairman Channel along with her on-screen daughter, Ambyr Michelle (Eva), she shared some of what she endured.

Now in a recently aired scene on the CBS soap opera, Leslie, throws some shade June’s (Jasmine Burke) way about her living under the bridge, when June is trying to get her life back on track. For Trisha, as she details in a very personal message on Instagram along with said scene, it resonated so profoundly. First, because of her own experience, but also because Trisha shared that her son is still homeless.

Photo: CBS

HITTING CLOSE TO HOME

Here’s what Trisha expressed, “During this scene with Ambyr Michelle and Jasmine Burke, my homeless son, Daniel, crossed my mind. I also remembered the time when he was 5 and I was pregnant with his sister and was myself homeless for a period. My character, ‘Leslie’, throws a dig at Jasmine’s character ‘June’, referring to her still living under the bridge. That was a difficult line to utter.”

She continued, “As actor’s, we have to sometimes detach what we’ve experienced to get through dialogue or use what we’ve experienced. In this scene, I had to detach from the almost 12 years of having a child who chooses to live a homeless lifestyle. (Yes, molestation, addiction and depression are all a part of that choice). Before any of these experiences, I have always had empathy for the homeless but as a mother of one, now more than ever. I have done all I can to get Danny off the streets but know this; I have not lost hope.”

OUT FROM UNDER THE BRIDGE

Next, Trisha shared her hope and belief for her son, Daniel and not listening to the voices of people like her soap opera alter-ego. “The beauty of this scene is that “June” may not yet be BEYOND THE GATES with the rest of the characters but she certainly let “Leslie” know she is NO LONGER UNDER that bridge,” stated Mann-Grant. “I am believing in real time, stepping out on faith that my son will overcome his present situation and walk fully into his God-Given Purpose. Just like some of us, that bridge represents our past and even though our present may not be all that we want it to be, it definitely isn’t what it used to be. We have to focus on the elevation and ignore the ‘Leslie’s’ of the world.”

In closing, Mann-Grant gave some major inspiration for anyone that is currently in a situation as she has been, expressing, “To all the Mommy’s out there, like me, don’t give up. Keep praying, keep believing that this too shall pass. There are help groups out there for parents of homeless children too. Stay strong and look at the message of this scene. ‘June’ is on the rise and so are we all!”

You can watch the scene Trisha references below.

Now let us know, what did you think of Trisha’s message to all the moms out there, children who are on the streets and the plight of the homeless? Are you glad that Beyond the Gates is tackling the subject with the character of June who is doing what she can to improve her life? Come Emmy time, is Trisha on your wish list of nominees? Let us know via the comment section below.
