‘Beyond the Gates’ Gets Spoofed Again by SNL ‘Weekend Update’ During Season Finale
The season 50 finale of Saturday Night Live, once again, included CBS daytime’s brand new soap opera, Beyond the Gates during its final “Weekend Update” with Colin Jost and Michael Che.
Per tradition, the two comics and “Weekend Update” anchors, do an annual joke swap, where they write jokes for the other and each hasn’t seen the jokes till they read it on the prompter live on air. The majority of Jost’s jokes written by Che are generally to paint Colin as a racist, while Che’s material as written by Jost, paints him as a misogynist and/or pervert.
During the May 17th episode, Jost poked fun at CBS’ Beyond the Gates, the first all-Black hour-long daytime soap opera, saying, “It’ll air when Black people are home from work … 24 hours a day.” Next, Jost continued the joke saying, “Since you (the audience) liked that, here’s another. CBS has premiered the first half-hour long soap opera with a predominantly Black cast, it’s called, ‘All My Children Don’t Know Who Their Daddy Is.’” (However, in the still image behind Jost it read, “Don’t Know Who They Daddy is”)

Previously on the March 1st episode of SNL, in the the set-up, Jost announced, “CBS this week premiered the first daytime Black soap opera called Beyond the Gates, and also a crossover white soap opera called “How’d Those People Get Beyond the Gates.” Weekend Update co-anchor Michael Che, responded to the joke, saying “That’s pretty good.”
You can watch Saturday’s “Weekend Update” segment containing the remarks about Beyond the Gates which occurs at 0:48 -1:26 below. Beyond the Gates airs weekdays on CBS at 2pm ET/1pm PT and streams on Paramount+.

Now let us know, what you think about SNL spoofing ‘Beyond the Gates’ for a second time during their 50th season? Do you think their jokes were in bad taste? Share your thoughts via the comment section.
Not funny at all. Why would you even bring attention to such a distasteful joke?
I’m not a fan of BTG, but I’m not a racist either. And I don’t like racist jokes, and those jokes on SNL are clearly racist.
Very much so. I’m surprised it even aired due to cancel culture.
I, too, am not a big fan of BTG nor ever of racist jokes, though this distasteful joke was part of the segment when Michael and Colin write never-before-seen inappropriate jokes for each other to tell on air, so Michael Che wrote the joke with the full intention of it being a racist joke that Colin Jost had to say on air. When the two hosts originated this, it was funny, but now it has gotten mean and painful to watch. I hope SNL retires this “tradition”.
SNL jumped the shark (for me) about 15 years ago. I see some clips online periodically, like this one, and I don’t like what I see.
You can’t make fun of something that’s already a joke LMAO

BANNEKER REFLECTS THE IMPORTANCE OF HBCUS
Sheila Duckworth, (executive producer, Beyond the Gates) spoke to Soaps.com to give some insight on the decision for the series to illustrate the ties that bind with HBCUs.
“It was important that we have this school as almost a character on our canvas, right from the beginning. Beyond even education, HBCUs have been pivotal when it comes to everything from economic progression and fostering a sense of community to the development of leadership skills,” explained Ducksworth. “From the beginning, we wanted to illustrate that what the Duprees are able to do in the world was a direct reflection of the impact HBCU’s have in real life.”
EVERYTHING HAS ITS PURPOSE
The EP talked about how purposeful the elements that integrate Banneker into the overall story of Beyond the Gates are including: the Dupree family door knocker that is a lion, the mascot for the fictional university, plus, the upcoming fight song that the cast will sing together on the Monday, October 5 episode, and the painting the hangs at Fairmont Crest.
That portrait of Vernon Dupree’s (Clifton Davis) father, George Cheeks Dupree, that hangs prominently at the country club, was named after CBS executive George Cheeks (now Chairman of TV and Media, Paramount), and as Ducksworth says of the legacy of Vernon’s father, “He was the architect of Fairmont Crest.”
So, are you looking forward to these episodes honoring HBCU traditions with the Dupree and the Richardson clans? What surprises do you think might be in store come next week? Let us know via the comment section below.
