Billy Miller Pens “Goodbye” Letter On His Exit From General Hospital

On Sunday evening, Billy Miller’s (Drew) longtime manager, Marnie Sparer, posted via her Twitter account a short video that was accompanied by a tweet that said, “Officially. Billy. Miller.”  The video contained a very heartfelt and thoughtful “goodbye” letter written by Miller on his departure from General Hospital.

Miller’s last day on the set was reportedly Friday, July 26th, although unconfirmed by the show at this time.  A three-time Daytime Emmy winner, who joined GH back in 2014 as Jason Morgan, Billy later took on the role of Drew Cain, back in 2017 when Steve Burton returned to his original role as Jason. Before coming to GH, Miller previously had a six-year run on CBS’ The Young and the Restless as Billy Abbott.

In Miller’s goodbye letter on his exit from General Hospital, he expressed: “Hello Friends, with a slight air of sadness, it is time to ponder what “Goodbye” means.  However, instead of dwelling on what is gone and sure to be missed, there is another way.  Maybe our goodbye really is remembrance of love felt, an appreciation for lives shared, and the lifelong reminisces that come from embraces given and received.  Maybe our goodbye is an earnest hope for the brightest path forward for us all.  Maybe our goodbye is honoring growth and lessons learned. Now, instead of sadness, I am filled with gratitude for all your support, encouragement, and every emotion shared. I cherish the journey we have taken together. Thank you for allowing me into your homes and lives. With every ounce of myself, I thank you for being you.  I would be remiss in this crazy, unpredictable world we all love so much if I did not hold out the possibility that maybe our GOODBYE is really… UNTIL NEXT TIME. All My Love, Billy Miller”

Miller also shared one very special thank you to his enduring scene-partner, Kelly Monaco (Sam), with the touching words:  “To the best partner I have ever had, who has my back and I have hers because it takes two! deuces – love, Billy.”

In addition, the balloons pictured in the video are from Miller’s fans, of which Bellqbanita tweeted: “We sent these balloons to Billy (they spell We Love Billy and some Cowboys ones). Two donations were made in his name to Texas Scottish Rite Hospital. He also has a brick dedicated to him in the hospital’s courtyard. #WeLoveBillyMiller”

You can watch the video messages containing Miller’s ‘goodbye” below.

So, what are your thoughts on the heartfelt sentiments shared by Billy in his “goodbye” letter? Sad to know that he has left General Hospital? Do you hope he will one day return?  Comment below.

I think Billy’s leaving is such a big mistake. He has been one of my favorites. His scenes with Sam were fun, emotional, sexy etc. these scenes have never been duplicated with the return of Jason. Good luck. You will be truly missed. Hope to see you soon.

I agree he was always my favorite the mystery about his role was so sexy loved him.

I mean the writers didn’t write for him. Frank didn’t demand story for him. Can’t blame him. He’s a good actor and easy on the eyes. Here’s to future success. And hopefully a co tract for Typer Christopher with the freed up money.

I love Billy Miller and i watched GH for Billy, Michelle and Roger. My hope is Billy ends up back on Y&R. He really is the only Billy Abbott but he will be wonderful wherever he goes!

Hell no!!!!! I love Billy Miller but Jason Thompson does Billy Abbott just fine.

As long as hes kept far from Genoa city
We know Griffith dusted off his Dehlias death script from his last run. The last thing we need is Billys monotone delivery from those days before he left. Jasons the only thing great to watch in this story. In that hes gutwrenching in his grief. Griffith redux needs to be contained.
Maybe Griffith can rehire Mia, Anna and Dinah , three magnetic ladies in the middle of exciting storylines before he came back and fired them because he wet himself in anticipation of continuing this lame story he penned.

Who are Mia, Anna, and Dinah??

Mia Rosales..Lola’s sister-in-law…Anna I think Devon’s sister..Dinah can’t think of it..ha.ha

I believe you are thinking of DINA, the mum of Jack, Ashley and our beloved Tracy. X

Nobody can deny that Thompson gives 110 percent a lot of people think JT will be fired who knows. I guess that will depend on if Miller wants a steady pay check I do not think he would have left if he had not had a offer he is almost 40 and he is not setting the world on fire in prime time or movies. I agree totally with you and they are still losing viewers

Who will take his place as Drew now?

I don’t believe they’re recasting the role, at least, I’m hearing they aren’t for the time being.

No need; the character was created messily.

Actually, per TV Source, TPTB have been attempting to recast since June 2019.

They won’t need a new Drew, because Frodd will become the “old” Drew.

Good riddance, he can sleep through scenes elsewhere.

It was not Billy Miller’s fault that the writers dropped him as soon as Steve Burton returned

Please have several seats.

God, I love you.. said this

he’s still uphilling but wavered not ” at the top ” he’s

your heart stimulated… unrequested here to fore

I needed you

shell shock, no? for all those in and around

Frank / Jean / Shelly / Chris : left him

after the beautiful romance w/Liz… that never blossomed… did “he” leave

oh my god… watch the story end with him savoring his last 5 years of life… even tho Sam clearly chose Jason even with Scout . it was my hope that Drew as Jason… at least was out of the clutches of any thing Corinthos’

to no avail the writing – never – surfaced

at the very least … have a few closing scenes with Leslie Charleson’ Monica

this is cry

ZZZ!

Not at all surprised! They did him wrong at GH! I wonder if they will recast, or if Drew will leave Port Charles? I would not be surprised if Drew has plastic surgery to look like his old self. Lord knows how obsessed everyone is with Steve Burton. Best wishes Billy Miller. Don’t go backwards, go forward and try something new like DAYS!

I’d watch DAYS again to see Billy.

The stars are lining up and Y&R is fixing their show to not only continue being #1 BUT deserving it! They have Michelle Stafford back and she is wonderful and now Billy Miller back as Billy Abbott only makes sense. See you later Jason Thompson! GH is calling and you will be great again over there. Recast Robin if Kim isnt interested in playing Robin again! BOTH shows can benefit from this change.

Certain characters cannot be recast. Robin Scorpio is one.

100 percent agree. BUT, if you need the character. Same with Lucky. F JJ, if he doesnt ever want to return, bring in Greg Vahn, he was good!

Jason Thompson is terrific as Billy Abbott, Billy Miller wanted to leave GH. Billy Miller has no plans to come back to Y&R and that’s fine with me. Billy Miller is a wonderful actor but he has a new show, coming up in prime time.

Honestly, I am not a big fan of Billy Miller. He mumbles lines to often and doesnt always express emotions well. I didnt know he had a prime time gig. I wish him well.

Tell me, please, about his new show.

I’m so sad Billy Miller is leaving the show. As soon as they hand Michael his son, I may leave General Hospital as well.

Im already qoing to quit once the baby story is over and Shilo’s murder is solved!(i think it will happened soon)

We all knew this was coming. One wonders if they gave him a more powerful storyline, might he have incentive to stay.

With probably a month left before he departs, we’ll likely get a rushed conclusion to the flash drive story. Is that “the drive” Franco is not supposed to take?

Is Drew going to depart, or is Steve Burton going to permanently take on a dual role?

The dual role wouldn’t really work, since Drew isn’t supposed to look like Jason anymore. Though I’m guessing there will be a lot more flashback appearances in the near future.

There is an actor who would be a good fit for the role, if they went for a recast. Don’t know the actor’s name but he’s the male lead on the show “Blood & Treasure” that has been airing on CBS this summer. Dude’s voice is very similar to Steve Burton, and he actually looks like what Steve might look like after “reconstructive surgery” (which admittedly, Billy never really did).

Not sure if the actor is available, or if that show was renewed (the premise is really ridiculous for a long term series, so it really shouldn’t be). But it’s a thought anyway.

Soaps have a history of ignoring plastic surgery. Max Holden and Janet Dillon are classic examples

Probably the best example of this is when Philip Kiriakis on Days got a “face transplant”… which made his face look exactly like it did before a horrible recast. (original actor came back, obviously)

He also somehow grew back a leg that got blown off in the Iraq war, but they didn’t even try to explain that one with plastic surgery

Steve Burton in a dual role? That sounds dreadful!

I predict Steve’s dual role will happen!

And yet not nearly as dreadful as Frodd walking around with Drew’s memories.

I think Franco is going to be implanted with Drew’s memories, which means he won’t be in love with Liz, but will be in love with Kim! Lol…cray cray here we come!

Yeah, it looks like where they are going. Never mind the TWO major plot holes involved here…

1) The entire brain mapping thing was about TWINS. Frodd & Drew are distant cousins (via the Susan/Heather connection For that matter, Cameron wasn’t related at all to either of them.

2) Jason could not accept Drew’s memories because of his AJ-induced brain damage. Frodd also has brain damage (the infamous “tumor”) so he would also not be a viable subject for transfer even if there was enough genetic compatiblity to….. however the Hell this all is supposed to work.

My guess that Steve Burton will take on a dual role, a great opportunity for him but not for Billy Miller! May Billy become a star in primetime. He can do it!

This is really sad news, especially now that Drew is finally going toe-to-toe with Shiloh and their backstory is slowly being revealed. I really hoped that Drew would help take Shiloh down, and we could see him get his memories back. But with no love interest and Oscar’s recent death, it may be time to give the character a rest and bring him back in the future.

Or maybe they will recast. It’s too bad that Mark Lawson was hired for the role of Dustin, because had they known Billy Miller would be leaving, Mark would be a great recast for Drew. Aside from their physical similarities, and the likeness between him and Steve Burton, Mark is a great actor and can easily play the role of an ex-Navy Seal. Maybe they’ll recast Dustin and wait a few months before bringing Drew back with Mark playing him. It wouldn’t be the first time an actor has played two different characters on GH – look at Billy Miller!

I just hope Miller doesn’t return to Y&R and displace Jason Thompson, who’s doing a stellar job in the role of Billy. It took some time to warm to his version of the character, but he’s made that role his own, has great chemistry with everyone in the cast, and it’s been great seeing him play opposite Mark Grossman’s Adam. Billy Miller is a talented actor, and I hated seeing him leave Y&R, but they just replaced Gina T as Phyllis when Michelle Stafford became available. Doing that with Billy too would be jarring. Although, having Patrick and Robin return to GH with Emma wouldn’t be a bad idea, if this actually does happen and Jason is free to return.

Michelle Stafford wasn’t openly available, though. Anthony Morina and Josh Griffith admitted she told them she was happy where she was, which means she was intent on staying at ABC.

Not surprising. Billy Miller was underutilized. The character was brought down by horrendous writing and boring costars. It’s a shame, because Billy Miller can actually act (unlike the Parking Lot). NuNina is awful. Lulu is as irritating as a skin rash. Liz and Hayden bore me to tears. Just such a shame.

agree

Does anyone know where he’s going, what he’s doing next? I think it’s very sad that he. as another Quartermaine, is leaving. I thought there was so much more story potential for him. Will he remember what happened with Shiloh and bust his scheme wide open? Will he decide to go ahead with the memory program to regain them and be okay? What about all his friendships and family members he’s so invested in? Aurora and his partnership in Jax? There is sooo much more than I’ve even written here.

Makes me think a Drew recast may be in the works. Drew is too important to be let off the canvas for long.

Billy Miller is immensely popular and a good actor. It’s a shame they’re loosing him. Big loss for us fans of GH, too.

Good luck, Billy, wherever you land next.

Always loved Billy Miller…. he is a great actor. They never gave him any good storylines…..

Hate to see him go. His character was such a decent human being to everyone.

This is very sad news. GH get a bunch of great actors then loses them due to poor storylines. Very sad about Billy Miller leaving. Missing Michelle Stafford more than I thought I would… she is Nina. I wish the new actress would stop trying to be Michelle Stafford… her wide open eyes drives me nuts and wish should would just make “Nina” her’s than trying to have eyes like Michelle.

Cynthia Watros has been doing that wide-eyed look since her days as “Crazy” Annie on “Guiding Light.” I don’t think she’s trying to emulate Michelle Stafford; that’s just something she also does.

So true

Funny, I now love Nina since Cynthia took over. She’s damn talented and is finding her grove as Nina. Hated Stafford as Nina. Cynthia is actually funny in a good way.

Surprised he stayed this long hard for people to accept a recast if the actor has been in the role a long time my understanding was when Ron was writing the show he wanted Miller but not for the character of Jason did not think it was a good fit. They should have just left Jason dead until Burton came running back after mom Phelps got fired from Y&R .

GH never wrote anything good for him but then there isnt much good about the show anymore…i will stop watching when Nell’s baby story wraps up…im still watching Days for now but im tired of the silly mask story and people hurting each other almost weekly…and Jack story dragged me to boredom…

I liked billy miller when he first came on and was linked to Elisabeth but as soon as he became “Jason”. and got paired w/ sam then he became annoying, I was glad he became drew who is a great character in his own right but unfortunately the victim of gh biggest problem, writers or executive who are awful at following up with storyline for him. the possibilities were endless, but the writers were lazy as fuck.

you have no idea : how happy I am that @Shelly is retiring. let the happy dance begin. however heated the disparaging remarks made @ WRITING TEAMS… I still must address Frank Valentini lack of imagination. dour. he’s just one big ole blank. sadly at the helm of General Hospital. love the expletive

We got rid of one lame horse now-
when will Frank Valentini be replaced??
GH needs young writers with new updated ideas,

GH, for the past years, has been a humongous Rerun !!
It’s been rerun plots, reruns of most every storyline with little to no new..

will miss him, sadly they chose Steve over him. I do hope Tyler does not come back, I think daytime has had enough of his on and off, off and on runs.

ABC/GH had given Billy the role of Jason !!

Steve left GH for Y&R to be Dylan.
And Dylan/Steve was hardly out the door at Y&R when GH took Steve back giving him his character of Jason back throwing Billy Miller under the bus, and folks, that was a horrible thing to do to Billy. Absolutely backstabbed Billy Miller. It was Shameful what they did to Billy Miller!!

I’m amazed Billy stayed on as long as he did,
After Steve came back they never gave Billy a good story the put their effort into Steve/Jason.

Billy Miller is one of the greats..
I will miss him..
He was to be Jason!!

Also–
Billy Miller cast as Jason Morgan.
In March 2018, for his portrayal of Jason, Miller earned a nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor In 2017

Billy Miller is a great actor…. He deserves better

suOOO, again we agree: “they never really gave him a good story.”

What was done to Billy Miller was disgraceful if not shameful !!
He was hired/brought in to be Jason Morgan.

How it played out;
Steve left GH to go Y&R for higher pay and perks.
Billy was brought in to GH to be Jason.

When Y&R wrote out Dylan then Jason went back to GH to reclaim his role as Jason and shamefully throwing Billy under the bus with no remorse for doing so.
Doing that was beyond wrong to do to Billy.

Billy was doing an awesome job as Jason, many liked him better as Jason than Steve as Jason..

Bottom line;
Billy Miller was totally screwed over.

I could not agree with you more, SUOO. Thank you.

Billy Miller is a FANTASTIC actor. After Steve Burton return it was downhill from there. What angers me is here you have a 3 time Emmy winner and the writers couldn’t write for him. They bring in a somewhat military storyline,,and with a “writer” who is an actual veteran,,they couldn’t even do that. I do not blame Billy Miller for moving on. He has an exceptional attitude and talent that will leave the PTB in awe. If the rumors are true,,he should take Kelly with him and be HAPPY

Stayyyy dont leavee

Not a fan of Steve Burton I really liked Billy’s Jason much more
I have stopped watching for a few weeks the story lines are boring
Just won’t go back

I loved Billy MILLER ON general hospital. The story line of when Billy came to Pirt Charles not knowing who he was. When the story realized he had memories inplated as Jason Morgon was great. The second story line is when he fell in love with Sam McCall. There love seem to gradually grow. After they get married it was love that keep Billy trying to remember who he was with Sam by his side. Good luck Billy you will definitely be missed.

If GH wants to step it up and become a contender again, hire Michael Muhney as the next Drew Cain. He would chew Jason a new…!

No he wouldn’t because TPTB wouldn’t allow it. Anyone who goes against Sonny and Jason always loses. This is what happened to Miller’s Drew. It’s a rigged system.

Good point.

I totally agree , Harry. I’m doing my best not to leave General Hospital because the writing is in favor of certain people: Sonny, Carly , and Jason.

“In favor of”??

Well right now, you have Sonny dealing with a father with Alzheimer’s, Carly facing the birth of a child with a serious illness, and Jason having to restrain himself from killing a psycho piece of shit cult leader who has kidnapped Sam about 666 times.

If that’s what you call preferential writing, I’d like to see how you write for the characters you hate!

Yes, I won’t change . You fail to mention Jason taking the law into his own hands by breaking out of jail , beating Shiloh , at Drew’s office when the safe was broken into , kicking in doors looking for Sam , etc. Are the writers planning to have him charged for any of what he’s done? Sonny in the police’s business when it comes to Shiloh or anything else that goes on in Port Charles. When I say Sonny , that includes Sam, Carly, and Jason. I wouldn’t trust the police in that town because all of them lean towards Sonny and friends; plus, Laura , the Mayor , is included. You mentioned what you wanted to list; however, you left out the rest. Another thought – How are the writers justifying Ava not being able to see her child through a visitation agreement; having the step-mother setting rules? I loved the story with Mike ; that’s the only time that I watched scenes with any of them because I truly adored that storyline. I have so much to say ; however , I won’t since I’m planning to watch in order to keep it on television unless I determine that enough is enough. It wouldn’t be the first time that I quit watching G. H. I will note that the mob storyline has somewhat faded.

He will be missed!

I think Billy’s leaving was a mistake. They could have paired him up with a love interest and kept him. Love him and dont want to see him leave the show. Keep him there.

Goodbye, Billy–sorry your character got such a rough deal. Hope you have better luck in your future endeavors. Take care.

Billy Miller indeed got a raw deal, Nancy. First, he should never, ever had been cast as Jason Morgan. Jason Morgan should never had been recast period. Miller is the polarized opposite of “Stone Cold.” Miller naturally exults a bubbling, charismatic, effervescence. Then Steve Burton decides to come back as Spider Man in monochromatic black and poor Miller, as Jason Morgan, fades away. As Neil Young once sang,”It’s better to burn out than it is to rust.” I hate this Burton-Benard dynamic which seems to have a hold on the natural development and progression of GH. I am sure this is why the superior Tristan Rogers is not afforded a sustaining front burner story line. For the last 20 years, all bow down at the alter that is Sonny and Jason. Miller is a diamond in the rough and he was not appreciated and fully realized while on GH. They were lucky to have him and they utterly blew it. I will not feel sorry for Miller because he has a long and successful career ahead of him. He played the grieving father with poignancy, and a sad soulfulness and did so with restraint and subtly.

Again, we are solidly in agreement. 🙂
And so glad to hear that you and I are simpatico re the “superior Tristan Rogers.” When he is in any scene, he makes it his. He brings so much gravitas
whenever he is on. I am confounded as to why he is not given a front burner story line! TPTB are missing a treasure!

I will miss him. I loved the depth of his heart….

Me too.

I Love Billy Miller on The Young &TheResless he wasa great Actor.

Billy Miller was the bestActor on The Young andThe Restless.

I’m very happy too see him go. He stopped acting along time ago, and was just sleepwalking through his role of Jake Doe Drew Cain. So maybe he will be happy somewhere else!*

Big mistake…I will miss him terribly. GH did him wrong. I wish SB had never come back. I haven’t been this upset about a person leaving since Michael Easton. I hope one day to see Billy back on GH. ❤

Love Billy Miller. There’s something so real, so down to earth about his presence. Drew fast became one of my favorite characters and one of the more realistic, genuine characters in Port Charles. Was hoping against hope there’d be a last minute negotiation and felt a disheartenung moment when I read his departure was confirmed.
Sigh..much luck in your new gig, Billy. Hope to catch you on wherever you land next…and will SO miss your portrayal of Drew…

Billy Miller is a great talent. They could continue Drew’s story, but they are favoring Steve Burton’s opportunity to play both twins like David Canary. Billy deserves to go on prime time like Justin Hartley has been able to do. He deserves to become a big star!!

Will miss you Billy. You’re a great actor !Drew n Sam Had such chemistry apparently on n off camera for a while wish it had worked for u 2 i am Very sad you didn’t have the story lines you should have . Would have been great for u n tamara to grieve and fall in love and have another baby And truly enjoy. Kind of b that stable couple shows need Anyway I wish you the best Hopefully a great part inNY or Cali.
Even a bisit back to Port Charles.

I am probably in the choir chanting to General Hospital’s writers, why did you ignore this talented actor after Jason came back? Instead of bringing “Ryan” back (like, why not let him die) to the canvass you totally ignored Billy. I have admired this actor since the first time I saw him on All My Children. Hoping I will see him again in a program on regular TV or Cable. Best of luck to ya Billy.

I wish him well. I stopped watching GH years ago but I can still relate to the fans who hate to see him leave. I still miss him on Y&R.

Wherever he goes from here, I truly wish him the best. He is a class act and he is wonderful at his craft.

Billy Miller was a terrific Billy on YnR, but on GH his talent was wasted. Very difficult to hope around on the soap world, as Steve Burton knows all too well from his experience on YnR. Sometimes it’s magic, sometimes not. But i am sad to see Billy go. I always hoped they would write something worthy for him, but that never happened. And I don’t blame him for moving on. Wishing him the best of luck and hope to see him on big or small screen again soon.

He’s great.bHope he will return. He will be missed

Its such a shock to see the talented Billy Miller leave. I’m praying that he will come back. He belongs on GH!!!!!!Billy please please come back!!!GH will not be the same!!!!!
We love you and miss you!!!!
A fan of GH since 1979. And loved every scene do did with Kelly!!! Please come back

Karen Leigh

Now that even the whole story of Drew’s memories & the flash drive has turned into Frodd Redemption Project – Part 666 who the Hell could blame Billy for wanting out?

So Drew will be gone, but in his place will be…. Drodd?? (Frodd with Drew’s brain map)

Yes, I want Billy Miller to return back to GH.
I wished that he was able to do both shows. Goodbye sweet Billy. This fan truly loves you for you. You’re talented and you seem to love being an actor and I know that the GH cast is your extended family members on and off camera. Keep on smiling and keep on being you Billy.
Love Kate.
Thanks for being Drew Cain etc. Characters in GH. I still don’t think he should of exit from GH.
Billy should of have exit out temporarily to do this show.
I hope that he realizes that he has over a million fans heartbroken for his departure. He is breaking up the three musketeers Franco,Jason and himself as Drew. I feel bad for his friends Sam,Carly,Kim,Sonny,Curtis etc. Seeing him leave. Recast or not. Billy Miller will always be my favorite Drew Cain. I love you. Be safe on your new journey to your new program.

Just when things finally start to get interesting, figuring out who Drew is. Why the heck? GH as far as I’m concerned doesn’t deserve him. The second Steve Burton came back GH swept him off to the side. What a damned waste.
Sorry to see Billy go, he is an amazing actor. Whatever he does next will be amazing, and you can bet I will be watching..
GH I’ve been pretty faithful viewer from Luke and Laura era, but you have really been pissing me
Off with the stories you choose to write and the paths you choose to go down.

Miss you Billy

Hayden Panettiere Remembered: ‘Guiding Light’ and More Stars Mourn Her Loss in Wake of Tragic Death

Hayden Panettiere

Tributes continue to pour in from the entertainment and soap opera community, and especially from former co-stars of Hayden Panettiere, who died on Sunday at the age of 36.

Panetierre was best-known to soap fans for her roles as as a young Lizzie Spaulding on Guiding Light and Sarah Roberts on One Life to Live, and as an adult in ABC’s music city primetime soap opera, Nashville where she starred as Juliette Barnes opposite General Hospital alum, Jonathan Jackson (ex-Lucky, GH and ex-Avery, Nashville).

As previously reported, Panettiere died on Sunday afternoon, August 16 in a home in Greenville, South Carolina. The coroner released an official statement on Monday, which read in part “no signs of trauma were discovered that would have contributed to the death. The cause and manner of death remain pending further investigation and the completion of additional studies.” First responders rushed to the scene after a 911 call about a woman who was unresponsive from an overdose and in cardiac arrest.

Now below, check out some of the heartfelt remembrances for the extraordinarily talented, Hayden Panettiere from several of her Guiding Light co-stars and more. Michael Fairman TV will continue to add to the list of tributes throughout the next few days as they become available, as well as keep you updated on any further developments in Panettiere’s death.

Beth Chamberlin (Beth Raines, GL): “Hayden played my daughter for 3 years. She was the most brilliant child actor I’ve ever seen.  The things she could do, the way she could remember 20+ pages of dialogue, day after day.  Even on days where the director would come out between dress and tape and make huge cuts to the scenes, Hayden, never once forgot a line or missed her blocking.  The adults would, but not Hayden.  I felt blessed to work with her. And always perfect in her playing of the scene.”

Connie Britton (Rayna James, Nashville): “This was Hayden. Bursting with brilliance, shining so bright. I have no words for this sad song. Just heartbreak.
I love you girl. Sleep easy now. 💔”

Tina Sloan (Lillian Raines, GL): “Hayden Panettiere was my granddaughter on Guiding Light. She died at 36 and was such a star.”

Rebecca Budig (ex-Michelle Bauer, GL, now Taylor, B&B): “I remember working alongside her..loved her and her family. She and Beth were spectacular together. So sad for her family and those who knew and loved her.”

Karla Mosley: (Dani Dupree, BTG) “This is awful awful news. Blessings to her soul and all who loved her.”

Photo: CBS

Bethany Joy Lenz: (ex-Michelle Bauer, GL) “There is nothing that posting pictures on the internet can do. I avoid it usually in moments like this. But Im here with my head in my hands and I don’t know what else to do in aside from praying for her soul, which I have done and will continue. I’m crushed. I knew the wild little blonde. Was she nine? Ten? I was eighteen. She ran through the Screen Gem studio hallways at 222 E44th St. laughing and playing games in between Guiding Light blocking and camera rehearsals. Long, unruly curls trailing behind her. She knew her lines and everyone else’s. Her intelligence was astonishing. She understood scenes and nuance and human struggle like no child I’d ever seen on camera. And she’d sit with you for a great conversation, then giggle and go play. We’d connect on and off over the years, like the cousin in the family reunion who got famous and life moved her away—but I always felt such joy seeing her when we were lucky enough to cross paths. We’d make a pact to talk soon. Lunch. Dinner. Somewhere we could curl up into a corner—but we never quite made it happen. I mostly stayed up to date through mutual friends.”

Lenz continued, “I don’t understand how this is real. Everything seemed to be turning around. She was coming BACK to life, wasn’t she? It’s too young and there’s still so much more life. And her daughter…. Hayden, you are surround by love. I’m sorry for every moment I didn’t reach out or check in. This can’t be real. These are moments of how I knew you, in glimpses over 26 years. I don’t know how to process this. I am praying for you to know the peace of God now and always.”

Brittany Snow: (ex-Daisy Lemay, GL) “I was lucky enough to play your sister for 3 years. I related to you so much in so many ways. Ways that I never even told you. Your talent was remarkable & so was your determination to be a bold, bright shining light. And you were. Always supportive, curious, funny and brave. You will always be remembered undoubtedly for your undeniable strength and spirit 💔.”

Charles Esten, Hayden Panettiere

Photo: CestenIG

Charles Esten (ex-Deacon Clayborne, Nashville): Patty (Esten’s wife) and I are stunned and saddened at the loss of our dear and beautiful friend Hayden. I will never forget the first time I met her. In a sound stage office in Hollywood, I was finishing up my very first NASHVILLE audition. I had read two Deacon scenes before pulling out my guitar and singing two songs. I said my goodbyes and, hoping I’d done well, went to open the door to leave. Instead of swinging all the way out, the door bumped into somebody. Kinda hard.”

“To my complete surprise, It was Hayden Paniettiere, who – in full Juliette Barnes mode – had been listening with her ear to the door. Instead of looking even a little bit caught, her face instantly bloomed into the most beautiful smile. Eyes twinkling, she clapped her hands and said, “That was so good!!” I can promise you that in that moment, there was nothing in the world I needed to hear more than that. I told her that, along with my HEROES-watching family, I was already a big fan of hers, and that I was grateful for the very kind words. It was her turn to go in, so as I went to leave, I said a jokingly cocky, “See you on the set!”

“I was, of course, many auditions away from landing that incredible role. But when I finally did, and showed up in Nashville to start work, she walked right up to me, pointed in my face, and with that magical grin said, “See you on the set!” From there, we became fast friends, working very hard to play those 2 troubled Nashvillians, but always having fun and laughing a whole lot along the way. She was, of course, extraordinarily talented, infusing her larger-than-life character with all the heart, charisma, humor, whip-smart intelligence, and flat-out magic that were, alongside whatever troubles and pain she carried, a part of her own personal palette. What a great gift it was to act with her, sing with her, and to just be her friend. She was always extremely kind to my family, especially my wife, Patty, who I’m certain she liked even more than me.”

Together, we are heartbroken that she is gone, and praying for her family, and for all those who, like us, will miss and mourn her so dearly. God bless you, Hayden.
Rest In Peace and Light ❤️

Emme Rylan: (ex-Lizzie Spaulding, GL et al.)” So very sad. Rest in peace sweet soul.”

Bryan Craig: (ex-Morgan, GH) posted a text exchange via his Instagram story he had with Panettiere where they laughed about her making fun of his hat. He wrote: “Love you Hayden. Rest in peace Angel.” Craig later added, “Cherish the moments with people you love and care about. As cliche as it sounds. Send that text, get that cup of coffee, tell them you love them and you’re proud of them. You may not get the chance again.”

John Oliver Recaps His ‘Days of Our Lives’ and ‘General Hospital’ Soap Opera Experience on ‘Last Week Tonight’

Published

John Oliver

Last Week Tonight host, John Oliver had his soap dreams come true on not one, but two long-running daytime dramas, heralding it his “hot soap summer” on the Sunday night, August 16 edition of his HBO series.

As viewers recall, Oliver’s tour of soap duty began back in March when he made a request and an offer to appear in any daytime drama that would have him with certain conditions, which included: having a ridiculous and over the top character name, a juicy storyline, and a slap.

Both Days of Our Lives and General Hospital came a-calling for Oliver, taking him up on his offer and in short order. Oliver appeared on GH in the role of the head of the WSB named  Z on episodes airing July 2-6, and then on DAYS in the role of Salem’s chief water inspector, Devlin St. John, in episodes that streamed the week of August 11.

FIRST STOP, PORT CHARLES

On Last Week Tonight, Oliver shared that both soaps delivered, and then launched into a comedic send-up complete with clips from some of his scenes. Starting with General Hospital.

Oliver said, “To General Hospital’s credit, they met all my requirements and more. First, my character got to arrive by a helicopter flanked by a pair of armed goons. And I got to do a dramatic walk during which I bravely shot in the general direction of a guy who was already on the ground. It’s called being an action star, by the way, unless you’re me or Vin Diesel, you really wouldn’t understand. And then in my next scene, I revealed my true identity. (Oliver played the scene where Josslyn wakes up in a hospital bed with Z standing at the side of her bed introducing himself).

He continued, “As for getting slapped, well, they knocked that and me out of the park too, because it turns out that agent’s mother was not happy with me,” explained Oliver, as they cut to the slap of Carly Spencer (Laura Wright) in the WSB Port Charles bureau office on Z. Oliver screamed, “YES! It has everything! A slap, a dramatic closeup, and me doing a voice so wrong, it is genuinely embarrassing. That was my honest attempt at an American accent. I can’t tell you why it’s southern. I can only tell you I was trying my hardest.”

SECOND STOP, SALEM

Then, came John’s wrap-up of his role of Devlin St. John on Days of Our Lives, the town’s chief city water inspector. “It is on Days of Our Lives I appeared in scenes alongside soap legends like Jackée Harry (Paulina) and Susan Seaforth Hayes (Julie). And the Days of Our Lives team met my demands in a whole different way because instead of being an international spy boss, they wrote me a character a little more my speed.”

Cut to a clip of Oliver introducing himself as Devlin St. John to Rita. He explains, “I’m the only thing standing between this town and a catastrophic plumbing failure. A literal sewage apocalypse. They made me Salem’s Chief City Water Inspector, which let’s be honest, is perfect casting. If you’re going to bottle my essence and sell it as cologne, it would be called ‘Chief City Water Inspector.'”

DEVLIN’S WIG

The late night host also clarified all the reports, that the wig he wore for his DAYS character he actually brought from home. “Now, as for the hair, I agree, it’s absolutely incredible. It’s been reported this past week that it is a wig I brought to set from home. And while it wasn’t technically from home, we did actually provide that wig, and for good reason,” joked Oliver. “I’ve seen myself act. I knew the hair was going have to do 90% of the work. I’ll be honest, I was going for a healthy John Stamos (ex-Blackie, GH) look, but instead, it appears I ended up looking more like Tina from Bob’s Burgers.”

“And if you’re wondering whether I got slapped on Days of Our Lives, not only was I slapped by a man wearing elegant silk pajamas (EJ), I also got to slap him, which felt utterly incredible. But wait, I was also stabbed with a syringe and not once, not even twice, but three different times. And if that wasn’t enough, this happened too.” At that point, Oliver played the clip of Rita using the taser on Devlin.

JOHN OLIVER LEAVES DOOR OPEN FOR A SOAP RETURN

The now late night star-turned-soap actor concluded his segment with, “Are you not entertained? Watching that makes me feel the way I assume Matt Damon felt after seeing the first cut of the Odyssey, both proud and impressed that my body could even do that. Which again, you wouldn’t understand. You’re not an action star like I am now. ”

As he ended his recap, Oliver thanked both soaps for playing along, and noting that neither DAYS or GH actually killed him off! Could a John Oliver return happen down the line? Stay tuned.

Watch John detail his soap dreams come to life on General Hospital and then Days of our Lives below.
