In a great chitchat with TV Guide Canada’s Nelson Branco in his Soapgeist column out today, Venice star Crystal Chappell, discusses the success of season two of her web series, and gives us a sneak peek into season three, in particular the next steps in the Ani/Gina relationship.  As indicated by the number of Soap Opera Spirit Award nominations, Venice’s writing team ( Chappell and partner, Kim Turrisi) was really one of the key ingredients that made this must-see soap viewing no matter whether on broadcast television or the Internet.  Simply put, riveting story, great production values and an extraordinary cast made Venice season two, quite the stunner.

Here are a few excerpts below from the interview with Crystal!

Chappell on the next beat in the Ani/Gina pairing and not working that much with Jessica Leccia (Ani) in season two:   “You’ll be seeing a lot more of Gina and Ani in Season 3. Here’s a sneak peek: You’re going to see how they met in Season 3 and their journey. Yes, I am being selfish — I’m giving myself some more Jessie! It really felt like … you don’t want to get to the end result too soon. I felt like with Lara we had a viable triangle that could carry us for quite some time. I really wanted to heal Gina. She had to soften her edges in Season 2 and the only way we could do that was through The Colonel. I really like Ani and Lara; I think they’re beautiful together and I love their chemistry. And now all these real-life issues have popped up: Ani has these body issues despite how beautiful she is [and Lara has a drinking problem].”

Chappell on the success of her first foray into writing with Venice: “I never really sat down to write anything before. If I have a passion for something, it’s acting and directing. I would like to become a better director. I’m hoping I can do that in Season 3. Listen, writing is new to me; I just wanted to flesh out the characters and make them relatable and equal. Having worked in daytime for 20 years helped; all I wanted to do was entertain the audience but you just never know if people think something is stupid or if they’ll like something. Certainly, the supernatural aspect was [a risk], but having Guya be psychic and ‘smell people,’ I didn’t think that story would be too far of a reach. You just hope it works but you never know.  I wrote it (Venice season two) in five days.”

Oh my goodness, I’m a sucker for “first time” stories. First meeting, first kiss, first love makin’, first fight.. Not that I expect to see every first but even the first meeting and the first kiss would be enough. Those are usually what I usually watch over and over again, with any couple I like. And I love Gina & Ani. I remember being a little “aww shucks” at the beginning because I thought we’d never get to see their first slow, hesitant kiss. 🙂 Sorry I’m babbling, just got excited.

DAYS Bill and Susan Seaforth Hayes Pay Tribute to Robert Clary

Days of our Lives beloved Daytime Emmy Lifetime Achievement Award recipients, Bill and Susan Seaforth Hayes (Doug and Julie Williams), paid tribute to their longtime co-star and dear friend, Robert Clary (Ex-Robert LeClair, DAYS).

On Wednesday, Clary passed away at the age of 96.  On Days of our Lives, Bill Hayes and Robert Clary performed many times together as Doug and Robert when the soap opera had “Doug’s Place” as a nightclub venue for the characters to meet up and have story, while also taking in some music.

Bill and Susan shared their thoughts on Clary’s passing on their Instagram on Thursday; accompanied by some clips of performances by the characters of Doug and Robert.

The Hayes’ expressed: “Our Dear Robert Clary… Like a diamond, Robert was tough enough to survive this world and emerge brilliantly. He was so full of life… so saucy, so sassy, so superb at everything he tried. The energy and optimism that filled his 96 years was amazing to behold.  When he performed with pathos or joy, he always touched our hearts. He was an adoring husband, a firm friend, a trustworthy team player and, in crisis, deeply caring. In childhood, he had experienced humanity’s darkest days- then, as a man, filled the world with light.  His story in two words to remember: choose life. #RobertClary”

Very sad news to report.  Robert Clary, who became a soap opera fan favorite for his roles as Robert LeClair on Days of our Lives, and Pierre Roulland on The Young and the Restless has died at the age of 96.

Throughout his daytime career, Clary always sang in his roles and is most remembered as Doug Williams (Bill Hayes) best friend, Robert LeClair.  The two would always perform at “Doug’s Place” in story.  Clary played the role from 1972–1973, 1975–1983, and again from 1986–1987.

During a break from DAYS, Robert went over to Y&R and created the role of Pierre Roulland when the CBS daytime drama first premiered from 1973-1974, and once again sang and acted on the show.  Later in his career, Clary appeared on The Bold and the Beautiful in the role of Pierre Jourdan from 1990-1992.

On Clary’s passing, Y&R shared: “The #YR Family sends our condolences to the family and loved ones of Robert Clary known to the Y&R audiences as “Pierre” on our debut episode!”

B&B also honored Robert by posting: The Bell Family & @BandB_CBS re sad to learn of the passing of #RobertClary, who portrayed Pierre Jourdan on @BandB_CBS from 1990-1992. Robert was a talented actor, a kind and courageous man, and a friend to all who knew him.”

Four decades into his career, Robert, who was Jewish, came forward with the fact that was incarcerated for 31 months in an Auschwitz concentrate camp, and tattooed with the identification “A-5714” on his left forearm. He was the only one of his captured family to make it out alive.

Clary was married for 32 years to the late Natalie Cantor, the second daughter of Eddie Cantor. She passed away in 1997.
