DAYS Kristian Alfonso Chats On Upcoming Scenes That Help Resolve Bo & Hope, Daniel Cosgrove & The Tearful Goodbye to Nick!

Kristian Alfonso (Hope) has been one of the leading ladies of NBC’s Days of our Lives for decades!  Recently, Hope has been back in police mode, being a single mother, and clearly falling for a new man in her life, Aiden played by soap veteran Daniel Cosgrove.  After years as being part of one of soap opera’s all-time super couples Bo and Hope … how does the character move on?   How do the fans move on?   This has been the plight the DAYS writing team have found themselves in, as well as Alfonso, since the departure of Peter Reckell as Bo Brady, who last aired at the end of October of 2012.

On-Air On-Soaps caught up with the Kristian at the recent Daytime Emmy Nominee Reception where she was on hand to support her peers and her cast mates from DAYS to get her thoughts on a few subjects:  Her touching scenes where Hope says goodbye to a lifeless Nick, how she is creating new on-screen chemistry with Daniel Cosgrove, and if the soap will finally, once and for all, seal the fate of Bo and Hope… since for all intent and purposes there has been no change on the horizon of a return by Reckell.  Here is what Kristian shared!

One of the best performances I have ever seen you give was in the episode that aired recently where Hope is crying over Nick’s (Blake Berris) dead body in the morgue!  I think you deserved some additional kudos for that … it was heartbreaking!  Do you remember shooting that scene and what was going through your mind at the time?

KRISTIAN:  I do remember doing that.  It was very hard to deal with that as it was shot at the very end of the day, and it was like the directors were yelling, “Go! Stand here … and do it!”  I was crying so much, and trying to remember where I was coming from and trying to hold everything together.  I think that was for Hope the resolve that: I have failed you. I am devastated, and am so guilty, and you deserved so much better then what I gave you. And the sad part for her is that Nick really wanted to make a change, and I think Hope carries that with her, absolutely.  The tears and the loss was just tremendous for her.

So what has been like playing opposite Daniel Cosgrove (Aiden), as Hope’s new love interest?

KRISTIAN:  Daniel is very sweet man.  He is very funny, and he wants to work hard, and I love that about him.  He is a family guy who adores his wife and his children. He has three girls that are all ballerinas and he has a little boy named Fin.  So he is traipsing back and forth from the east coast all the time and commuting right now.

People are still screaming: “Bring back Bo! Why aren’t they doing everything to get him back on the show?”

KRISTIAN: … Because Peter Reckell (Ex-Bo) doesn’t want to come back.  So it’s confusing for the fans, because then he tweets out something different.

They have got to do really do something about this on-screen already, because it still giving fans an expectation that Hope and Bo will be reunited!

KRISTIAN:  They have done something about it.  We’ve done it and we’ve shot it.   Hopefully it will be great, and what I love in the casting of Daniel Cosgrove is that he is so opposite of Bo.  We will see where it goes.  I love the fans and their support has been absolutely incredible.  I was reading some tweets recently and they were saying, “Hope and Aiden aren’t even together yet, and I want them together!”  And that is fantastic!  The writers have done an incredible job.  It was frustrating for me at the beginning, but I really truly appreciate and totally understand why they paced everything out, because now Hope would have the opportunity to be a single mother going through all of that, and trying to juggle all of that, which also involves the whole thing that happened with Nick.  She is trying to tend to everyone, but the only one she is not tending to is herself.  I love where they started with Aiden and Hope being so combative, but I got to tell you, I love where they are going with the story, and I could not be happier.

So, what do you think about Kristian’s comments that DAYS is finally did something about the future of Bo and Hope more permanently that will open her up to further storyline possibilities?  What do you think they have written?  Do you want Hope with Aiden?  What did you think of Kristian’s performance during Hope’s goodbye scenes to Nick in the morgue?  Weigh-in!

He retired & She has not. Time for this beautiful woman to get a full life

Donna, I totally agree!

I totally agree too!

ITA It sure is and Aiden fits the bill just fine, he is so different from Bo and maybe Hope will get lucky and he will be faithful.

Let Hope be happy.

I watched the show for the first time in years. Cosgrove was my favorite on GL. I think him and Hope could be great. I loved Bo and Hope until Reckell opened his big mouth. he is gone .Why should the Actress K A lose her job because Peter left. Goodbye and good luck. This is the same as GH Scrubs. KM wants to leave she is ready to leave she has been there since she was a child, let her leave without horns, because that’s what the GH writer does. Demonizes the actor that wants to leave. I use to watch Days then they killed Jack, stupid move. These are soaps when the actor returns back from the dead Oh Well.I may just watch this I love KA and DC so all is fine with me.

It’s good to hear that you may start watching again, janet! As for Jack, he’s been mentioned a lot lately. Who knows!!!

BTW, CBS killed GL and ATWT in favor of “The Talk” and something else. Julie Chin is the wife of the CBS president who axed those soaps. She wanted her own talk show.

They really are cute together. I fast forward thru a lot of scenes but with them I stop. Enjoyed their kids being friends again too. I do think that daughter is going to be the next Sami when she grows up.

I always thought that Peter (aka Bo) will stay on forever.
They make an exciting storyline and couples to continue on Days of our Lives.
I really enjoy so much when I was younger to watch their show.
I never thought its would end like this way.

I will continue to watch the storyline of Hope and Daniel. Hopefully, its will be an exciting as the storyline between Bo and Hope. I am looking forward to it.

I want Bo presumed dead in a plane crash…leaving the possibility of a future Bo return(even if recast)…its about time this moves forward instead of leaving Hope in limboland…also, as much as i like the young actress playing Ciara i liked to see her character slightly aged…i want her to become a rebellious 12 year old who creates a lot of problems at school and at home for Hope…then Days needs to introduce daytimes most shocking contriversal storyline ever…12 year old Ciara starts gaining weight and occasionally getting sick and throwing up…Hope fears Ciara has developed an eating disorder and is depressed over her fathers alleged death…Hope takes Ciara to see Dr.Marlena Evans, who after a few sessions, suggests Hope take Ciara to Dr.Jonas for a physical…when Hope takes Ciara to see Dr. Jonas to confirm her suspicions that her daughter has an eating discover, Hope is shocked when Dr. Jonas informs Hope that her 12 year old daughter is actually PREGNANT!!!…Hopes first thought is Abe’s son Theo has to be responsible and she and Abe have a fallout because of the accusation until Ciara admits it was 13 year old boy named Adam she met at school who turns out to be Bevs troublesome younger brother!!! Soaps used to be known for its contriversal storylines that shocked viewers into watching…this could work but i know some would object…however, a preteen pregnancy storyline would be a first for daytime…why should these kind of stories just be limited to the Lifetime channel…if they can attract a huge audience maybe soaps could do the same with stories like this!!! just a thought!!!

disorder not discover…

Paige confuses me at the moment…shes been in Salem for some time now…long before Mummy Eve shows up…didnt see her interact with Theressa for the longest time or mention her step relatives are the Bradys which she shouldve known…so who was she staying with before the Eve reveal…if Theressa wouldnt she have known about her aunt and J.J.s connection long before now…i know i have a tendency of some forgetfulness because of some medical problems ive previously mention but Paiges first ‘days’ in Salem without a mention of her Brady Family and Theressa connection dont make sense to me!!!

Eve kept Paige in the dark about her Brady relatives and warned Theresa to stay away from her. Paige was staying with the unseen aunt Joan.

Of course, the Brady’s are not blood relatives to Eve or Paige.

I want Bo dead period, I loved Bo (PR’s) that is for years but the the last few I have really taken a strong dislike to the character and I stop seeing PR putting in 100 percent. I will add PR’s antics haven’t help. So this long fan of his is saying by. I am now full on Haiden fan.

one of the most riveting soap episodes i saw was before I watched Days, i stopped in to check it out and it was when Bo and Hopes child (Zack?) died. Peter Reckel was sobbing, crawling in the dirt/ground (by the grave?) and just sobbing and telling him he loved him…it was riveting!!! i thought that guy will get an Emmy…he never even was nominated as far as I recall now. But that is when i started watching Days

I would love to get into your head, jimh. Lol

Well CeeCee, there is plenty of room there…lol

you are a funny guy

“…there is plenty of room there…”

almost a classic line

Exactly, Patrick. It must be so fulfilling to just sit and have a conversation with jimh. I would have a perpetual smile on my face. He sounds like that friend everyone wants to have. Kudos.

I kind of know how you feel about Marlena…she and Julie have been turned into stuck up nosey interfering busybodies…hard to believe these two were once Days leading ladies back in the 70s…a soap mag even asked ‘Can Two Soap Queens Survive On One Show’…they were far more interesting back then…now they have Julie popping in once a month and had her act as if Nick was her only relative…im a fan of Susans(Julie) and wish they had her be the more classy Julie she used to be and give her her own story…as for Marlena she used to be more fun and entertaining to watch…now they writers have stagnated her character somewhat…and her ex John Black and his return seems pointless…would like to see John and Marlena reunited and romantic again…one of my favorite Marlena stories happened in the early 80s…the Salem Strangler…who was stalking Marlena and killed off several characters…for the shows 50th id like to see Marlena recieve startling eerie phone calls, hints of a stalker and a couple of unsolved murders in town reminiscent of the Salem Strangler from over 30 years ago…Jake Kositchek was the original stalker and murderer and is dead…so who could this possibly be terrorizing Marlena 30 years later…this reunites John and Marlena after Marlena nearly dies and John realizes how he almost lost his beloved Doc forever!!!

I love Kristian and Hope is a beautiful and strong character. Bo and Hope had such an amazing history and chemistry. Kristian deserves more than six months of conversations about a church fundraiser. Hope needs a strong partner. Aiden is BORING!! There is absolutely no chemistry between Hope and Aiden. A proper ending for Bo and Hope needs to happen(Peter has tweeted that he would do this for the fans)! Then find someone and a storyline worthy of Kristian’s talents and Hope’s strong character.

You are right Amy, Peter did tweet that he would be willing to return to end things but it’s a bit too late. If he knew he was retiring then he should have ended things when Bo left and he should not have demanded that Mr Corday promise not to kill Bo off. Now he is claiming that Bo should have been killed off. Kristian is right it is confusing for fans. At a fan event Peter made it very clear that he wanted out to spend more time with his daughter and he has now moved away. Which is great for him, he should be able to do what he likes but Kristian is a working actress and she’s entitled to a story and a new partner. Peter has been very unfair to his fans. He has made it very clear that he was unhappy with the pay, the lack of story for his character and his wanting to spend time with his daughter. So I’m not sure he deserves to come back.

Peter Reckell has repeatedly stated is was “not about the money”. He sold his CA home and moved away. He wanted freedom to see his daughter and wife more often; away from the Hollywood life. He has also tweeted he would do a short-term return to give closure to “Bo”. Don’t know if the writers are up for a short term return so we will have to accept The Hope/Aiden story as it goes.

Well said, Janelle. Days should have killed Bo off in 2012 but they gave Peter what he wanted and that was time so they waited until last year and approached him and he said NO, now that Days has decided to move Hope on, PR is making rumblings about his willingness to tie up Bo s/l, well Days has moved on and so has many of us fans.

What’s the point of bringing Peter back for a short stint? Is it so Bo can die? Something Peter, himself, requested not happen or is it so Bo can serve Hope with divorce papers? Something that Bo would never do. He would not return to serve his wife with papers and then leave his daughter again after being gone for so long. Or is it so Bo can come back and Hope tells him she wants a divorce, and so Bo takes off again. Again, that’s not something Bo would do. He’d stay and fight for his family. So the only thing that could happen is for Bo to come back to die. I don’t see the point. I get that fans feel cheated because of the way he left and we all assumed he’d be back but Bo leaving should have been dealt with in the beginning. There is no point for him to come back.

I could not disagree with you more, Days is doing a fine job in building the relationship. Should they be on more than two days a week, absolutely? As for Aiden being boring he is far from that he is an adult man unlike Bo, however it is time we learn more about this enigmatic man. Daniel & Kristian have wonderful chemistry and they really do seem to enjoy each other and it shows. Bo kill Bo off for good, I am sick of PR’s games with fans.

i agree! I love this blooming couple and am happy that they found Daniel Cosgrove, love the way about him, multilayered.

I completely agree.

Thank you. I have watched ‘Days’ since the day Bo and Hope got back from their honeymoon in 1985. Hope doesn’t need to be paired with a replica of Bo, but for heaven’s sake, give her a strong partner and great storyline. Kristian deserves that and more.

Janelle replied July 6th, 2014 at 4:20 pm

I am nodding in agreement, stated well!

It wont be the same without Bo, but life goes on. Hope should not have to be alone. ♡ Love the show. Always have.

go for it hope and aiden all the way I like it she is moving on finally give them to a good story as a couple

Fans need to accept that actors make choices, and sometimes the choice is to leave. DAYS needs to move on, and the story needs to continue. Recasts, particularly of legacy characters, are tricky and rarely succeed. Usually the characters end up caring more about the recast than the audience does. DAYS made the right choice in not recasting Bo at this point. They also made an excellent choice by hiring an experienced veteran in Daniel Cosgrove as Aiden, and then weaving him into the story by having him interact with multiple characters in multiple storylines. Delaying the relationship with Hope was also the right choice. They made us like and care for the character before Hope did. Now we have hints of some mystery involving his former wife. I want to know more, and that is a tribute to good storytelling. Way to go, DAYS.

I was hoping Eve was Aidens former wife…which would be interesting with him as Jens lawyer fighting Eves lawsuit against her!!!

Interesting idea. I think they have no idea on that story yet. They just snuck it in there for long term story possibilities.

As usual, you always manage to put an interesting spin on any possible plot. I love it, jimh. Keep ’em coming. I try catching up….it’s summer break; busy with the little ones. Regardless, I’d like to know how you feel about Marlena or anyone else coming down so hard on Nicole….pretty sanctimonious, if you ask me….nose up in the air with a la-di-da attitude. Perhaps it has much to do with the fact that I am not a fan of Marlena or Eric. Is he really that “holy” ?

Tom, you got it man! Days is definitely taking it’s time with Hope and Aiden and that is a great thing, and making us like and care for him first, so true, and it’s a brilliant plan. Once we, all accept and like Aiden, Hope will soon follow. I like Daniel Cosgrove a lot, and hope he sticks around in Salem for a long time. I like how Days is taking time for Aiden and Hope to really get to know one another first, as single parents and now as friends. Smart move. Definitely good storytelling. Hope deserves stability and happiness. It’s great to see how Aiden now makes Hope radiant. We’ll need a new nickname, Fancy Face, belongs to Bo & Hope. As Aiden’s connection to Hope blossoms, we see Hope smiling, and she looks genuinely happy!

I like the pairing of Aiden and Hope together. They look good together, and there’s chemistry there. I’ve always been a BIG fan of Bo and Hope, but since he and the writers didn’t see eye to eye, they have to do something. Maybe they have Bo writing to Hope asking for a divorse, but only because he knows it’s not fair to keep her in limbo any longer. I don’t think they’ll kill off the character though. They may bring him back (the character, not Peter) just as Hope and Aiden are ready to walk down the aisle. That sounds like something Days would do.

I can see Hope and Aiden at the church ready to say their ‘I Do’s’ and here comes Bo roaring in on his motorcycle to sweep her away…during the shows 50th anniversary special in 2015!!!

Days is just the best and Kristian is one of the reasons

I love Haiden, Bo should have been dealt with a year ago. Peter made his decision and then plays games on twitter which as a fan that ticks me off I don’t like games. With the new character of Aiden their is so much potential for Hope. I loved my Bope but they ran their course, I am not sure where they could have gone with them as a couple. I do hope Bo is dead because theirs was such a great love story his dying is the way to go for me. Haiden is so refreshing!

I agree. They didn’t know what to do with Bo and Hope, other than trying yet another triangle with Billie. That clearly didn’t work, and may be a part of the reason why Peter left. I’m sure the money issue came into play as well. The budget can’t handle a highly paid actor who isn’t central to the story.

I am glad to hear that it sounds as though they are going to close out the Bo and Hope story. I love Aiden and Hope, and the chemistry between Kristian and Daniel. This Bo thing has been dragged out too long, I am ready for Hope to be able to move on.
I think Daniel has been a great addition to the Days family, I hope they plan to keep him around!

I like Hope and Aiden! I would love Kayla to fight her sister-in-law for Aiden!!!

I’ll always remember Hope’s goodbye to Nick. Powerful stuff!!!!!

I still think we’ll see Bo and Steve!!

I dont see Hope in a triangle with Aiden and Kayla(is she even still in Salem?) at this time…that would be interesting(days sure has wasted M.B.E.s talents) but i think for now Hope and Aidens biggest problem will be Aidens maybe not dead wife?(i thought it would be Eve but i guess im wrong…or am i?)

You could be right!

Mary Beth Evans should not be ignored. When Kayla bumped into Aiden at the Horton Square, there was a connection…chemistry at it’s finest!

I so hope your right about seeing Bo and Steve again.

Well, there is that Clyde guy. LOL Perhaps Kayla can battle Kate for him. I do agree that MBE is being wasted as a powerhouse actress, and Kayla does deserve a new man for herself. But lets be fair here, Kayla getting herself a new love interest shouldn’t come at Hope’s expense. I would loathe and lose respect for Kayla if that ever happened, whether she intended for it or not. THANK GOODNESS the writers dropped the idea of Kayden after all and have continued full steam ahead with Haiden!!

Hope fans have been waiting for something like this for our girl just as long and patiently as Kayla/MBE fans have for theirs. It’s Hope’s turn, it’s KA’s turn and it is our turn as well! Let us enjoy it!

I want Judi Evans to play her other days character Bonnie Lockhardt and pair her with Clyde to add new problems to Salem and possible comic relief…Days needs Bonnie and Clyde…lol

that is a really touching post

full of sentiment for OUR girls

I just LOVE them…. Kayla and Hope

I wonder what the “contract” are for Kayla and Adrienne….. I wish they were featured more… PUHLEASE Dool Production… take heed.

I would be be in hoopla heaven if Kayla were to find a good hot man for her very own

You made sense tho that these two women more than likely shouldn’t be fighting each other or at odds over a man

arent’ they tho just so lovely

emmy gods
serial gods

Mary Beth Evans should never be ignored
Wally Kurth should never be ignored
Judi Evans should never be ignored
brandon Coughlin should never be ignored – T as in Tad

I love this whole cast even if it comes along with Daniel and Jenn
they just grate on my nerves

I did see chemistry between Kayla and Aiden…it was better than Hope and Aiden but maybe eventually there will be a triangle…just wish TBTB see it too!!!

Bo is just another deadbeat dad, trapsing off chasing his dreams while his committed wife sits home and raises his child. I say kick him to the curb and allow Hope some happiness!!

if he’s never featured again… and never returns

I at bare minimum dream he’s with Billy or Carly

talk about a whole lot of something…

he rocked he lived, he loved, he belonged, he carried

fans love loved miss care

Bo loved Hope, Billy, Carly and his children and family

thats ALL his doing

I want Hope with Bo (P.R.) Hope and Aiden just do not have the chemistry that Bo and Hope have together. They have made Aiden to stiff and formal. He has to loosen up a bit. Sorry, but I am a Bo and Hope fan. I’m too old to change my thinking since I’ve watched from when they were teens. 😉

Don’t get me wrong, I’m going to stop watching the show if they do end up with Hope and Aiden but it won’t be them that I’ll be looking forward to on the show but will turn my attention more to the other characters.

Meant to say I WON’T stop watching the show if they do end up with Hope and Aiden as a couple.

Haiden all the way for me. Bo is the past and while I enjoyed PR’s Bo (he is the only Bo) I think he should have left in 2010 when Days took the character over the edge. I find Daniel Cosgrove a welcome change to Days he and Kristian have great chemistry. I agree with KA I like that Aiden & Bo are not a like.

Im hoping they kill off Bo. The fans would never accept another actor and Peter is done with it. So finish it respectfully and let her move on! A lot of fans are iinterested in the new pairing so we will have that to look forward to!

They actually recasted Bo once with Robert Kelker-Kelly, the actor who played Amanda’s husband, Sam on Another World. 🙂

Peter Reckell is playing games and DAYS is fed up with his social media shenanigans and are moving on from the character. When he tries to return no doubt that door will be closed to him or he’ll be offered a sweeps arc and let go again.

Sorry not an Aiden hope couple fan. I just don’t care for Aiden. Too judge mental , jumps to conclusions and not enough man for Hope

I want Hope with Aiden!

I am thrilled that the writers have gone permanent with Bo & Hope’s relationship(or lack thereof). I am tired of hanging on. The relationship that is growing with Hope and Aiden is nice to watch. I hope the writers don’t screw it up. I also wish everybody would get off Jen and Abigal’s backs.

Nick did not deserve any of Hope’s tears, but then she really still has no idea of all the evil he did.
Love Hope & Aiden, and I truly love Daniel Cosgrove (from GL). Dealing with Bo’s absence is long, long overdue. Reckell gave the show plenty of advance notice that he would be leaving. It truly is a shame they have waited 2 years to deal with it.
That said, I really pray that Hope becomes aware of the problem she is raising whose name is Ciara. LOL.

I enjoyed Bo and Hope, they were a cute couple with fire, chemistry, passion & a great deal of respect for one another. But if Peter doesn’t want to return, the fans NEED to realize that it’s out of the show’s (and his co-stars including KA, DHs, etc) hands. I’m glad too, that Days is finally addressing where Bo is or at least, what happened to him so Hope can move on with her life. I love her in cop mode, and the scenes thus far between Hope and Aiden have been utterly charming and full of potential. I’m fully on board the #Haiden ship & looking forward to more of this pairing!!!

Not a huge Kristian fan, nor a fan of Hope, but this Bo storyline has dragged one for long enough. If Peter is not interested in return, they should either break the couple up or recast the character and return him in 2015. The casting of Daniel was amazing, but I only wish he could’ve had a more interesting storyline aside from being an automatic love interest of Hope.

We will soon learn more about Aiden…and it should be interesting!!!

Is there some reason that they didn’t/haven’t recast Bo? Why have they let it drag out this long, some kind of contractual agreement with Peter reckell?

Peter has moved on and is not coming back to the show. Yes, they could recast the role with a different actor and keep the character but the show has decided to go in a different direction and give Hope a new storyline with a new man. I am certainly supportive of that change and looking forward to seeing Kristian and Daniel take this challenge and make this story for Hope and Aiden “come alive.”

For me, I didn’t watch Days in the beginning and only caught on in the early 2000s and my sticking around with it had a lot to do with Bo and Hope. I absolutely love them as characters and Peter and Kristian; they are magical together.
I do understand Reckell’s decision, I really do. I still think there’s a place for Bo in this story cause I think Ciara needs her dad and I truly think he would’ve really enjoyed seeing EJ in handcuffs…
Anyway, but in regards to this story, I really think there needs to be some kind of avenue to potentially bring back Bo, whether it is in the form of a recast or if Reckell changes his mind. There’s a lot of places where you can see Bo’s presence being really missed.
I am a fan of Daniel Cosgrove so for Hope’s sake, I am interested to see how they develop the relationship of Aiden and Hope, but at some point, you can’t have Bo chasing after Stefano forever. If that’s the case, then reintroduce the Brady/DiMera feud.

I could not disagree with those you don’t like the way #Haiden, is being written. Days is doing a fine job in building the relationship.

I met to sayI could disagree more!

I thought Kristian’s performance with the Hope and Nick scene was brilliant. It was so moving and I thought she did a phenomenal job. I am a massive Bo and Hope fan, have been so since 1983, I thought I would hate any new pairing for either of them, was never a Bo and Billie fan or a Bo and Carly fan or a Hope and Patrick fan, but I can say that I’m coming around to the Hope and Aiden pairing. I like Daniel Cosgrove and I do see chemistry between him and Kristian. I am disappointed that Peter is trying to pretend that the fans deserve more and it’s the show or writer’s fault. He was the one who chose to leave and he was also the one that asked Bo not be recast or killed off. What were the writers supposed to do with that? As a fan, I don’t need Bo to be dead although I don’t think Hope would move on without some sort of clear ending and it sounds like that’s what will happen. It’s actually not out of character for Bo to leave Hope and Ciara thinking he’s saving the world or exacting revenge. He’s done that before. As a long time fan, I welcome the change and can’t wait to watch this story unfold.

I am loving Hope & Aiden, I have always been and I still am a Bo & Hope fan but they are over it is time to buryBo for good PR is not returning end this great love story once and for all ! With the exception of the last five or so years they were the best of Days Haiden is a breath of fresh so I am full in. More #Haiden please.

I adore Kristian, what a great lady & the character of Hope is one of Days great heroines it is about time she is getting a decent SL I am so ready for # Haiden as for PR, why bother I am not interested his nonsense.

Could always bring back Robert Kelker Kelly as Bo.

First and Foremost

my heart beams… and wanders… that KA’ Hope… Love Interest w/Aiden reaches me

Daniel Cosgrove has nothing to worry about

Thank God… KA’ Hope… hasn’t had to traverse the long and winding road to nowhere.. Melissa Reeves has dived

Hope and Jennifer… the bearers of Brady and Horton… enervate

Kristian Alfonso has nothing to worry about… and it’s not just because of Daniel Cosgrove… he’s filled the big ass shoes… left by Peter Reckell

I stand firm: KA has more than added multi-dimension and layers… to her character Hope…

it’s emotional stuff… for the character of hope… and the history of Salem’ites

Thank you DAYS for treading and forwarding… Hope and Aiden along

I’m with this pairing

Daniel Cosgrove has those dreamy get lost in your eyes disarming allure

he just has to focus smile and Hope melts yet she won’t show it yet

he’s been featured in that lawyer legalese suits…. but that’s OK… big time really

I am just smitten that KA character has a draw from… grow, reach, stretch her acting chops with ease… and help along her single motherhood… with Ciara

and at last… the chord of parenting… was reached with his son… as their offspring are friends

it’s all coming along nicely… and safely… but.. treading… as the history of Bo… is commonplace… will never whither

but… Aiden has made his place… I LOVE it… love this… that Hope is not in turmoil… but is still able to love and reach Hope…. LOL I’m happy

the history and tears whilst I’m sharing… that Hope gets to live… and share her life
with someone other than Bo…. it’s Aiden

chemistry is real… to go their twice… is surreal… blessed… thank the serial gods Hope unequivocally.. is their…

I hope… beyond hope… for fan recall

that Peter Reckell returns

why the heck NOT… ??? !!!

he was the main attraction for eons… and multitude of fan

this would further enliven and forward DAYS production

Peter Reckell.. has SO MANY reasons to be in Salem

his draw with the whole cast is at its best and finest

someone posted above… and took me by surprise… that he was a philanderer… but I digress… that was story

he could carry and feature script

and will if asked back

what a coop Peter Reckell belongs

should he come back and bring closure to Bo and Hope ?

that’s an inevitable and in all likelihood

but… his history with his family will never wane

fans of DOOL would feast and treasure such a feat

to care for and love the history : Ciara on the mend

for now

it was tears tearful where is Bo why is he not on with and carrying DAYS

be that as it may

Ciarra I ached for…. inasmuch it was a hoot to see her spoiled acting out antics… it’s still loved less daughters feelings… and I ached and hoped for Hope

she’s a fine actress…. so I hope they feature Ciara with her own closure… and moving on with her best

it has to happen… i’d ache

it was so real with Bo not ON
to cement how beloved and catching his family still is

for the love of Serial Gods…

FEATURE : A Brady and Horton…. Hope and Kayla in love with the same MAN…

a wild ride rife with pull and tug : heart

ummhhh : let me see

Jules and Harry… I think posted alike

that DOOL doesn’t have near enough thread feature and cull fan soapbox

I swear to you… I know.. DAYs hour long SHOW is 98% full… with the two percent labeled Daniel and Jenn…. LOL for obvious reason

the hour swims by… with nary a critique and fan recall for strife… but… heart in full mode for this genre that DAYS day in and day out delivers top drawer top shelf, and without doubt.. the best of the best

i soapboxed… it’s not difficult to understand 4 serials and not boast heavily how Salem’ites upper echelon.

I love DOOL

I magnanimously share… Live in Salem

so much about the cast pull savor dream dare live besot

theres a DAYS Marquee

have at it

EJ and Sami

I honestly really and truly pull for Sami….

from the utmost bottom of my heart… I will always thank Alison Sweeney for carrying DOOL for HER 21 years +

for her to realize true love and rest is aplomb…

are the writers delving in to fan pull… that Sami and EJ deserve to ride off in to the sunset

honestly: for me : I think she’s not worth a DiMera experience.. but her longevity defies any one

I have so longed for DiMera prevail… for Salem’ites to get the best of them… again and again.. just riles… but so be it… I’m in the minority for Salem feast

the DiMera’s quake pulsate load character drive

I was totally surprised that none of Sami family were in attendance of her wedding

her character didn’t deserve that

i want to further drive that : as a testament to thanking AS character : Sami is at last tumultuously is chess piecing her lot in Salem

is EJ being arrested for not filing his CA state taxes.. and that is the defining moment that splits them apart?

they have to find some way for this shakespearean pairing to reel

how enigmatic how delicious how savoring for how much you cared about this pair

I don’t know the outcome.. but realize how much James Scott and Alison Sweeney delivered

Thank you with Heart ache and miss

I love Kristen and I want her and Aiden together. She deserves an emmy for her performance over Nick’s death.

Agree they need to write bo off properly. Perhaps he has met carly again in Europe while chasing Stefano and hasn’t had the heart to tell Hope.

I was never a Bope fan always found them boring but Haiden are cute. Would also love to know Carbo had found their way back together also.

I love Hope and Aiden together and I love the Ciara gets pregnant at 12 idea. If they want to bring Bo back, why not bring back Robert Kelker-Kelly to play the role? He was popular in it when he replaced Peter Reckell back in the ’90s.

our darling misguided fairy cinderella

Ciara pregnant at 12

Salem is just waiting this out….

I have a fervor vigil for this troublesome miscreant beauty

Hope has all she can do to take Ciara under her wing

marvel at Ciara

she makes Sami look like a good mother

Ciara will be the next sami brady on Days. Ciara is cute, nosy a whiner and can be a bitch. LOL. I love the actress, that plays Ciara.

Good idea. I Loved him on Another World. Excellent choice. However I am liking Aiden. I just hope they don’t have to go thru all that Jennifer and Daniel have gone thru. I liked them and pulled for them but not that they have broken up again I am tired. That’s not a good thing. Being tired makes me also not care if I watch the show or not .

miss bo please bring back

I read it all. And I have faith that things will happend

I miss the character Bo and I think he will return sometime down the line with PR playing him!

if TPTB and Peter Reckell ever came to a meeting of the minds. I’d welcome him home.

that being said:

Ms. Alfonso : LOL it’s with great relief …
what seems like a longstanding vigil…. as you withstood single motherhood with that handful… Ciara…. and trooped along

then along comes…. Daniel Cosgrove’ “Aiden”

its all their

there is light at the end of the tunnel

and it’s beaming all over for Hope, Aiden, and the two children

can’t wait for that first kiss to start

I dont see great chemistry with the two.. However I dont hate him.
I am happy they are going to resolve the Bo situation ftirst..
Im simply resolved,Few if the couples click or make real sense..

I mean they are making something out of Roman and Marlena for Gods sake which makes ZERO sense , especially with John Black is on the show…. But even if he was not, The fans HATE or at best Tolerate Roman because we are forced to .
For me there is not even ONE Rooting Couple.. Not ONE !!

I love Hope & Aiden, so glad to read they have a future, they are the main reason I watch Days. Kristian has always been my favourite heroine. I have also supported Bo & Hope since the beginning they were Days for me but things change. Peter chooses to leave and be with his family which I have no problem with and I think it was time. Bo did cheat, whenever he felt he lost Hope, even though it was due to his arrogant ways, but I digress. I don’t want Bo back and I will add I don’t like Peter playing his fans back & forth Days gave an offer he turned it down, so move on. If by chance Bo were to return way, way, way down the road he would get a taste of his own medicine with Hope & Aiden being together now that I would not mind seeing, as long as Hope chooses Aiden. 😉 I am ready for full blown #HAIDEN Days has handled their relationship well and finally a closure of Bo & Hope is coming, I agree with others I want him dead. Because theirs was a greatest love-stories death seems the right way to go, so I am hoping for that route. As for Bo being in love with his old slapper that makes laugh, even she knew she was no competition. I can’t see Days going there because it was such a disaster.

I have been a huge Bo and Hope fan since their trip to New Orleans in the 1980s. Although I hated to see Bo and Hope leave the show back in their prime, it was great to see them return. Kristian is so underrated as a great actress on DOOL. I will never forget the death scenes when Zack died and she confronted Chelsea. I still think she was robbed that year at the Emmys. I love Aiden and Hope together. I think Aiden is fun and I have enjoyed the slow bold. Peter Reckell has been gone for a 1 1/2 years and it is time for Hope to regain the crown as the star of the show. I would love to see Chelsea come back and cause trouble for Aiden and Hope. I do not want Eve to be related to Aiden because that tells me she is going to be a part of too many story lines (But I love Kassie D). It would also be great to see Shawn Douglas and Belle return.

Wow the shades at Peter Reckell..
Seems there is not lost love between Alfonso and say the least.

agree with you juju! Im like wtf? I think KA is just protecting herself with the big bosses.People seem to really be blaming PR for this which isnt fair because no one knows whats going on behind the scenes.

That is right we don’t know, so PR could be fully to blame not Days or anyone else! But like you do we can voice our opinions as can KA!

I don’t see it that way, she spoke the truth, why is that shade she reads twitter and can see that fans are fed up being pulled this way and that by PR comments knowing full well that he could have come back and wrapped his S/L a year ago. I was a large fan of his but I am sick to the back teeth with his flip flopping. I admire her for her honesty!

I do, too, Annie! I think he is hoping to cause some sort of uproar, because I think he left on financial terms not being met? Out of sight, out of mind where Peter is concerned!

I don’t see shade either, rather as Annie put it “the truth”. Twitter is a dangerous place to be flipflopping and that’s what he does. KA is “what you see is what you get” and that’s what I LOVE about her. It would have been nice if PR would have had the balls to stand up for her when that crazy guy and the polka dot bra queen were bullying her on twitter back in 2011(?)…I just remember PR flipflopping over that as well…good riddance!

What! I must have missed that. Do tell……. 🙂

Bo has had Carly and Billie when Hope was off canvas. It’s a crappy double standard that Hope hasn’t experienced love with anyone but Bo. Yes, she’s had affairs with John and Patrick but it wasn’t the “true love” level that Bo had with Carly and Billie. It’s time for Hope to move on. She’s far too vital and essential to the canvas not to have her own storyline and I think this one with Aiden is exactly what Hope needs. Kristian Alfonso and Danny Cosgrove work amazingly well together. These are older characters but as a viewer, I cannot wait for Hope and Aiden’s first kiss. So, DAYS, move this along now and cut down on the crap stories like Theresa Donovan, one of the most underdeveloped and one-note characters ever to hit Salem. Give her airtime to Hope and Aiden instead.

Gerry: Just to clarify Hope did not have an affair with John that Hope when she was Gina and she had no control over that.. Hope was only with Patrick once. Whereas Bo has tasted from his old women more than once even when Hope was there! ITA with the rest of your thoughts.

I have to stand “firm” with Jenn Lilly, Theresa

for a the one note double standard aggrandizement being dealt the character of Theresa

LOL : it’s obvious she doesn’t have to do any thing… even lack of story or direction… she makes an impression… she’s lasting… full…. to the gills… in every scene she makes her mark…

she’s a hoot… if for any other reason… she’s camp classic delivery without taking it all so personally… She’s on every time

she’s scene stealed and flown with

I appreciate her character for all the reasons the rest of the characters in Salem reel @ the DiMera, Nick, Eve, Theresa, even Anne

catapult her STAR

To each their own. I find the actress and the character incredibly irritating. She’s the poor man’s Megan Mulally. The character adds nothing to the show especially now that Eve is back in Salem. Theresa has never been anything more than Eve’s poor carbon copy. Theresa is now superfluous because Eve is a better character and played by a seasoned actress. So in my view, Theresa is unnecessary and just dead weight on DAYS.

I fully agree with you, Patrick. Jen Lilley has the IT factor. She fills and captures the screen with each scene. I also appreciate her character and presence for the same reasons…everyone else falls short. I am really trying to contain myself watching Brady, but my patience is waning. He is made to appear as the tough guy, but I only see FOOL written all over him. He acts like a spoiled brat . He is an adult and should start taking responsibility for his own actions.
However, I can appreciate that the writers are trying to bring a slice of the real world into this storyline. But, the main ingredient, that is, the agonizing pain and despair experienced by an addict is not portrayed. What I see is the belligerence of a cry-baby.
Theresa, on the other hand is calm, cool and collected. Her expressive eyes speak volumes. There is much to foresee and learn within those depth. I see desolation and rancor…I am waiting for a meaty Theresa storyline to develop and evolve; one that will leave everyone else in her dust.

CeeCee and Patrick I agree with you both. I loooove to hate Theresa, meaning Jen Lilly is a wonderful actress and from what I’ve learned about her on Twitter she’s also a wonderful human being.

Glad that Hope is finally moving forward with her life. I’m enjoying Hope with Aiden. PR wanted to leave and I wish him well. DOOL is currently the best daytime soap IMO.

I think Bo & Hope were written into a corner….there was very little to do with the characters that hadn’t been done already. Hope & Aiden are refreshing in many ways. I like that he challenges her and that they can still have light moments. Daniel Cosgrove is a good actor and I liked him in his previous roles and enjoy seeing him on Days.

I have seen PR’s comments and feel his ego is bruised that the show finally gave up waiting for him. He was using the fans as an excuse to be able to come back and “let there be closure”. Truth is that he made his choices and the show does not revolve around him. KA/Hope was kept in limbo for almost 2 years while they played the waiting game for him. Time to let both the actress and the character get more story instead of popping in & out to play detective or mom for a scene here and there.

They did a fine job of slowly integrating Aiden onto the canvas and having him interact with other characters while still focusing on a budding relationship with Hope. We know that as soon as they start to really become a couple some skeleton will come out of his closet.

As for Ciara, there are ties I want to throttle her. But, that means that they are doing a good job building her character’s personality. She is like a throw back to AMC’s Erica Kane. It will be interesting to watch her grow up…and I hope they don’t SORAS her because sometimes real time aging works best for story and the character.

One question however is……are they ever going to address the fact that technically Hope and John are still married? They really made a mess out of that by creating that whole stupid plotline and then just forgetting about it.

Bravo, well said.

Ciara is a lil whack job!!! The actress who plays her is just spot on all the time!!

I’ve never cared for Peter Reckell or Bo Brady, so I am thrilled to have Daniel Cosgrove as Aiden on-air with Kristian. I think it was smart for the writers to move slowly with this storyline. I’m looking forward to the gala. I like Aidan and Hope together. I watched the scene with Hope making peace with Nick’s death two or three times. I thought Kristian did a fabulous job. That scene should be submitted as an Emmy reel next year.

Days Of Our Lives

Days of our Lives Legendary Susan Seaforth Hayes Talks on the Horton House Fire Storyline, Mourning the Loss of Husband Bill Hayes & His Near-to-Final Performances

It has been an emotional time for longtime fans of Days of our Lives and beloved veteran, Susan Seaforth Hayes (Julie Williams). On-screen, the iconic Horton home was burned to the ground in what appears to be a storyline-dictated decision that shocked many. In real life, Susan is mourning the loss of her husband and DAYS enduring favorite, Bill Hayes (Doug Williams), who passed away at 98 in January. Over the weekend, during the 2024 SAG Awards In Memoriam tribute, Hayes was remembered along with other motion pictures and television stars whom we lost over the past year.

Since the Peacock streaming soap opera tapes months ahead of air, the Horton home fire and its aftermath are currently playing out in all-new episodes with more on this story featuring Susan to come. Bill Hayes also appeared in several of these episodes making it all the more touching and heartfelt.

When Julie came back to the Horton home to see what remained of it after the fire, Days of our Lives fans were treated to a heart-tugging episode that streamed last Wednesday, February 21st. In it, newly-taped scenes of a young Tom (Zach Chyz) and Alice (Sydney Kathrann Smith) Horton telling the story of how they came to live in the house to raise their children, juxtaposed with Julie and Doug (and members of their family and friends), surveying what’s left of the beloved house, brought many a tear.

Michael Fairman TV talked with Susan Seaforth Hayes for this very candid and heartfelt conversation to get her feelings on the Horton house fire, and being given the opportunity to have a storyline at this point in her storied career. In addition, Susan provides some insight on what it was like for her ailing late husband to tape scenes at DAYS shortly before his death, what the series plans to do about writing off the character of Doug while honoring the legacy of Bill Hayes, and how she knew she had the greatest love affair that anyone could hope for in their lifetime, which in turn, has inspired all of us.

I was shocked when they decided to burn down the Horton house. Were you at first devastated … and did you know that there would be a big story surrounding it?

SUSAN: I did not know how big a story was with it. I knew that many years ago, another regime had planned on trashing the set and getting rid of the set because nobody cared about the Hortons anymore. It was stopped by one person, and I was eternally grateful for that. This time I thought, “Oh, my goodness! I guess I’ll be meeting people for a cup of coffee at the Horton Square. No home, no roots, no reason to be called in,” and thinking that’s the end of Julie. That’s the end of Doug and Julie. Then, when they began to structure a story around it, I think all of this came up during the writer’s strike. So of course, I was curious to see how this was going to turn out. I enjoyed the aftermath, because in the aftermath, and a little bit before the fire, if you saw the show, I get to talk a bit about the history of the household and the people in it.

Photo: JPI

In the special episode that aired last Wednesday, Julie gave Leo (Greg Rikaart) the family tree history of the Hortons for his story in the Spectactor.

SUSAN:  I’ve had a couple of good long soliloquies about the past. I’m fated to be the character that does that because I’m the one still standing. I must say, I do enjoy doing them. Emotionally, all I have to do is rerun some of the actors and my own family in my mind and the emotion starts to come, you know, the emotion starts to flow.

Julie talks to Maggie (Suzanne Rogers) immediately after the fire. She is upset that the Horton family Christmas ornaments are gone. Fans were not happy that they could possibly have burned up. Thank God! There was a happy ending when they were located and unscathed, or there would have been hell to pay!

SUSAN: I knew that they were in the prop room and that they still existed. But how much they were going to put a story around their loss, I did not know. We don’t get to ponder the plot. We just get to show up and start doing it. I think on this particular matter, something as important as a structure of the original set of the show, there’s been quite a bit of interest. So, I can appreciate that.

Photo: JPI

I was thinking, ‘Did they decide to burn the house down, because they were finally retiring the old Horton home set?’ What was the purpose of it?

SUSAN: They’ve done everything to make quicker set changes, which is remarkable and very efficient right now. The set designer said, “I’ll be interested in your input,” which was nice. The one thing that I loved that had been done, didn’t work. You couldn’t shoot into it. It was a federal mirror over the mantle. I loved it. The size was perfect. I was just delighted. And then, we tried to shoot it, and because of the roundness of the mirror, you got a perfect view of camera one and camera three. So, it came down.

This is Julie’s project to renovate the home. She’s determined to bring back all the memories and redo it?

SUSAN: Absolutely, which is another nice note to play for my character. She’s determined to make the house something that her grandparents would recognize and still feel comfortable in.

Photo: JPI

What did you think of the episode that just aired where the show incorporated flashbacks of a young Tom and Alice Horton?

SUSAN: Well, I set it up. They had their own their own lovely scenes. I read them, and I’m sure the audience was charmed.

What do you remember when you first came to DAYS, and you were in that house, in that set?

SUSAN: What did I notice about the set? I noticed that it was a strange shade of green. (Laughs) It was explained to me that that dull color meant that your face would pop on color TV. I understood that. I loved the little window up the staircase. I’ve always loved that. And at one time, there was a model of the house that sat on the set on its own little pedestal, a little playhouse of the exterior of the house. Whenever the house was on (and remember this is when we were a half-hour and practically live, but not live, because there was no editing), there would also be the sound of a barking dog whenever we reached the Horton house neighborhood. We never saw the dog, but I’m sure his name was “Spot”, and I’m sure he belonged to someone.

PhotoL JPI

You shared so many scenes with Frances Reid (Alice) and MacDonald Carey (Tom) in the Horton living room set and up till they passed. Did they get along well with Bill? Looking back, how was your relationship with them?

SUSAN: They loved him. Well, Mac and Billy had worked together before in theater. Mac was very kind to me at the beginning and helpful. Frances was as well. As Frances got older, she got a bit testy. When someone says, “You’re not going to read the line like that … are you?” It catches your attention. (Laughs). I got peeved at Frances from time to time, but her intent was always to make everything as good as it possibly could be. I saw her come back from her stroke. learn to talk again, learn to do it all again. Not do it easily, but to do it at all was wonderful, and the same with Mac. In his last shows, he was very frail, but we’re actors. We liked being there.

Photo: JPI

During the taping of the episodes surrounding the Horton house fire, Bill was mostly in them with you. How was Bill doing at the time you taped these scenes?

SUSAN: He was okay. He was up for it. He had difficulty moving at that point. So, they restricted his movement a lot. Bill always enjoyed coming to work a lot, and it was extremely difficult for him because he was blind, and didn’t move very well. And now, to do a scene with people who may or may not, have rehearsed with you, who may or may not, give you the exact cue, and when they are attempting to have you look each other in the eye, you can’t see who’s eyes they are, that was the hard part. The easy part was working with him, which was lovely and was a gift. It was a gift from Corday Productions that he was able to work within three weeks of his death, which I thought was super and extraordinary.

Photo: JPI

That is amazing. Did Bill understand everything that was going on at the time of the tapings?

SUSAN: Absolutely. He understood what was going on. He just couldn’t see it or touch it.

The timing couldn’t have been easy for you with Bill’s declining health, and that the show was going to burn down the Horton home where you shared so many scenes and memories.

SUSAN: Well, it hasn’t been my greatest stretch. But I knew that life would be like this. I’ve had five decades of an absolutely wonderful, blessed marriage and a chance to work and a chance to live in my own home and travel, all good. And now, we’re going to have the epilogue. And the epilogue is the hard part, seeing rapid change around you and losing the people that were the center of your life. I’ve just been very fortunate to have cultivated some wonderful friendships, and to have a wonderful large family of Hayeses.

Photo: JPI

You do realize that you and Bill were the gold-standard of what we all should be lucky enough to have in our lives. What an incredible, beautiful, passionate, loving marriage that the two of you had. You don’t see marriages like that anymore. We were all just in awe of the two of you. To us, it was the greatest love affair. You got to have that which is so extraordinary.

SUSAN: I know, and it was all Bill. I mean, any idiot could have been married to Bill Hayes and been deliriously happy. The guy was so perfect in every way that you really would have to pick something and blow it out of proportion to ever complain about any of his traits of character. He was just all good character, goodwill, and good humor. I just followed along and tried to live my life for him, with him, and follow his style, which I hope to carry on. I hope to be as good to people as he was to people, and, not be selfish.

Photo: JPI

I always remembered how the two of you would come to the studio with your suitcases, ready to work no matter what material, large or small, they gave you. You showed up. You just had such great work ethic and you don’t see that as much anymore.

SUSAN: At the moment, it’s hard to find it everywhere. I think it’s probably generational. You cannot get too angry at people that are still holding up their phones in the one rehearsal that we have. I think it’s more convenient to receive your work electronically, but somehow it doesn’t seem quite as real. You don’t have a script in your hand anymore unless you print one up yourself.  Sometimes you haven’t met the person you’re working with. Well, that’s not unusual, but no rehearsal at all, that’s kind of marvelously new.

Photo: JPI

Does Julie lean on anybody for emotional support as she tries to rebuild the Horton home. Who’s there for her?

SUSAN: As far as I can tell, nobody. I’m supposed to be the wise woman, and Marlena (Deidre Hall) is supposed to be the other wise woman. I haven’t had any scenes with Marlena for help. I would think Marlena would be the person I would be going to for grief counseling, for friendship, for all of that. I haven’t seen it in the scripts, yet. I’m still deeply entwined with Chad’s (Billy Flynn) storyline.

How is Billy Flynn to work with?

SUSAN: A pleasure. Billy Flynn has grown a lot as a human being and as an actor since I’ve known him. I’m really enjoying his company and really enjoying doing scenes with him. We rehearse and then we get on other subjects and laugh and talk and inform each other. We’re interested in a lot of the same things. He’s a new parent. He’s really devoting himself to that, to that experience in the best possible way. So, I’m lucky.

Do Julie and Chad try to figure out who set the fire?

SUSAN: Oh yeah.

Photo: JPI

I kept thinking about how Julie got burned in the kitchen fire years ago and her face was scarred, At the time, your mother Elizabeth Harrower was writing DAYS and wrote that for Julie. Did you hate that story?

SUSAN: Well, I know where the story came from. It came up from something in mother’s own life. I knew the people involved, and I wasn’t crazy in love with the idea. Then, when it was supposed to go for six weeks and went on for months and months, I was concerned. Mainly, I was concerned that my face was going to be affected because of the appliance, the scars, that I was wearing. I was told by a dermatologist, “You’re going to have a little beard after this. Ripping your face every single day to get this off is going to be hard on you.” But, I seem to have survived.

Has the show even addressed with you how they plan to handle writing-off the character of Doug Williams, and how they want to honor Bill?

SUSAN: Only in the smallest way. I had a conference call with the producers and our head writer last Friday. I was informed about the immediate, immediate future. I’ve also been promised that they’re going to keep me busy. It’s a cast of over 40 people. I’ll be happy to show up and to be included.

Photo: JPI

I was just hoping that whatever they decide to do with the character of Doug that they were going to run it by you, first.

SUSAN: They have, and they have been very sweet about it.  I’ve got to tell you, this regime, they have a sign up on the wall now, that says, Things we expect on this stage.”  The first one at the top of the list is “kindness.”

Have you watched your work back all these years? I know some actor’s never like to watch the scenes they taped.

SUSAN: I think you learn by watching yourself, if you have an open mind, and if you are not hypercritical, or dismissive. I cannot be dismissive of a character that has given me such a wonderful life. I’m still interested in Julie, perhaps I wouldn’t have been if I’d been on the show for three years and never returned to it. But I’m quite interested in her now, and what she has to offer as a member of this ensemble.

Photo: JPI

Julie’s ties to the whole history of Days of our Lives from this point on are very important. How do you feel about that?

SUSAN:  There are those that don’t care about the history of the show. I know that. I know there are those that only care about continuing with something snappy to keep eyes on the screen through action, adventure, drama, death, kidnapping, missed opportunities, all that, which I suppose that’s what the audience craves. But, that’s not just what the show can do. What the show can do so well is character. There’s a lot of people over 70 who are still on the show now. I’m the oldest one, but I’m not the only one. We’re coming up on the 60th anniversary. I don’t think the show is worn out. And if it is, it’s had a remarkably successful six decades.

Lamon Archey (Eli) is back on DAYS for a stint. What has it been like to work with Lamon as his on-screen grandmother?

SUSAN: I think he’s terrific and visually he is so beautiful, so appealing. I think both Eli and Lani (Sal Stowers) are very appealing as characters. I’m delighted to be connected to Eli as a family member. That was a lucky break for me.

Photo: JPI

Do you think DAYS fans are going to continue to be emotional in the aftermath of this fire and all the story that comes out of it? Do you think we’ll be touched by what Julie goes through to get the remains all cleaned up for a new house?

SUSAN: I think anybody in America who’s gone through a disaster, and have unfortunately had the disruption of their home, will be sympathetic and interested in how it all turns out. It’s a nice note to play. We haven’t had to do that very often. We just go from one lovely apartment to another without much discussion. I think this is the one set that meant a lot to people. I was very sorry to lose “Julie’s Place,” as it turned into kind of a sandwich shop. I still loved having a business, a tangible place to be, and an alternate place for people to meet.

Photo: NBC

Upon reflection, what was your favorite scene with Bill? Was it when Julie and Doug got married on-screen, or was it something else that was much more intimate?

SUSAN: I think our last scene is going to be more important, emotionally. I think the first wedding was beautiful, but the material around the time of our second wedding, when Brenda Benet (ex-Lee) came back on the show and Doug stood up to her and says, “I’m not going to be manipulated anymore,” was also strong. There has been a lot of very important times – when Doug was killed-off by James Reilly, and we met in the tunnel of light. That was a day. That was a difficult day, which I certainly can’t revisit right now emotionally. When Julie found out Doug had run off and married her mother, Addie, that was a day. It was a day because, I went to the producer at the time, Jack Herzberg, and said, “Is this it? Am I not going to work with him anymore?”And he said, “Right! That’s it. You’re not working with Bill Hayes anymore.” We were not married at the time, and I thought I was going to go through the floor! That wasn’t a happy day.

Photo: JPI

In terms of Bill’s final day on the set with you, did you know that it was his last, and what would turn out to be his last scene?

SUSAN: Well, they didn’t know. But I knew. I had been allowed to rewrite it. So, I can’t tell you Bill’s last line now, of course, but I will in time.

What do you think about the sentiments shared by Susan on her late husband, and this storyline? How do hope the show properly honors Bill and Doug Williams when the series writes-off the character? Are you enjoying the Horton house fire story arc or does it upset you too much? Share your thoughts via the comment section below.
