DAYS OF OUR LIVES: John Black’s Funeral Part Three: Bo Pays His Respects, Brady Explains ‘The Eyebrow’

The Wednesday, June 11th episode of Days of our Lives concluded the funeral of John Black, the most beloved man and hero of Salem. As the story picks back-up, Eric (Greg Vaughan) reads a letter from his sister Sami who was unable to attend but is watching the funeral virtually.

In the letter, Sami reflects on her very contentious relationship she had with John over years, and how she blamed him for ruining her life. However, she admits, “He did not, in fact, ruin my life. He made it infinitely better.” Sami adds that she may have been a nightmare as a child, but she loved John deeply, now and forever.

Carrie (Christie Clark) addresses John’s loved ones from the lectern and speaks on their blended family. Growing up, Marlena (Deidre) and John raised Carrie, and as she reflected, John was always like a father to her and that no matter what was happening in her life, he was always there for her.

Then, in a symbolic reference to John and Marlena’s 1999 wedding, Carrie asks each of the siblings to leave a flower next to the mementos of John’s representing being part of a “larger garden.” Marlena flashes back to the wedding, and in the present we hear Marlena and John’s voice-over as Brady (Eric Martsolf), Belle (Martha Madison), Paul (Christopher Sean) who is representing Sami, Carrie and Eric, each leave a flower for John.

BRADY ON JOHN’S EYEBROW

One of the more touching moments came from Brady when he took to the lectern and spoke of how John very late in life reconnect with his biological father, Timothy Robicheaux and how for decades not knowing where he came from was always a missing piece of John’s life. Brady explained when he met Timothy and found his birth father, John finally had peace.

Next, in one of the more perfect ways to honor the late Drake Hogestyn, Brady spoke of John’s eyebrow and did his impersonation of his father and the different eyebrow raises for different occasions! Brady illustrated the “conspiratorial eyebrow” to the suspicious one to his favorite “Make My Day” eyebrow, and while it brought some levity and light-hearted remembrances to the memorial service, Brady’s tone changed to a more solemn one sharing that he is so glad that his father has been laid to rest knowing where he came from, and that he was the world’s greatest dad. Brady concluded that he is so happy that John got to find his own greatest dad before he passed.

Back at another hospital near Salem, Bo (Peter Reckell) and Hope (Kristian Alfonso) are arguing over letting Bo attend John’s funeral. He wants to go very badly, after all John was one of his best friend’s and if it wasn’t for John, he wouldn’t have come out of his coma. Hope also wants to go pay her respects to a man she cared about and shared a past with as well, but she is too worried that it could cause a setback in Bo’s recovery.  Finally, after Hope agrees to drive them, they head out to make the funeral in time.

MARLENA’S POEM

Now at the lectern, Marlena finally addresses her family and friends. She says she wasn’t prepared to speak, but she told John everything she wanted him to know before he passed away. With tears in her eyes, she recites one of their favorite poems: “That is the true season of love, When we believed that we alone could love, That no one could ever have loved so before us, and that no one will love in the same way after us.”

Marlena says she marvels at all the seasons of love she shared with John – nearly 40 years of them. She speaks on how they survived so many obstacles over the years, but their love for one another always got them through it. Looking at the photo of John, she says,  “I really do believe that we will survive this now. Our love will bring us through. Goodnight, my love.”

BO PAYS TRIBUTE TO HIS HERO AND FRIEND, AND THE HERO TO MANY

As Eric is concluding the service, suddenly Bo arrives with Hope. He hugs Marlena and asks her if its OK that he speaks about John. When an emotional Bo speaks to John’s loved ones, and how John saved him years ago and now, expressing, “His true power was his huge heart and his compassion.” Bo starts to get choked up when he says how John sacrificed his life for him, and that now he also saved countless lives with his heroics and while he may not be here, his gift of life will go on. Bo ends with John’s signature catchphrase, “And that’s a fact… That’s a fact.”

AFTER THE FUNERAL SEVERAL MOMENTS SHOULD BE HIGHLIGHTED:

-Marlena spotted a bouquet of lilacs, which are her favorite flowers and she wondered who sent them.

-Brady takes out the memento plates from the gondola ride John shared with his mother Isabella, and lays them down and says, “These are for you dad. Give my love to mom.”

-Kate (Lauren Koslow) and Hope finally have their moments to speak privately on their love and friendship of John. First, Kate is looking over at John’s photo and tells him how much she will miss him. While later, Hope is speaking to Bo and looking at a photo of John, sharing that they had a special connection because of what Stefano did to both of them.

-Kayla informs Marlena the gold coin she gave John while he laid in the hospital bed is still missing. Marlena says that the coin was meant to be a sign of hope that John would recover and now that hope is gone.
