DAYS Peter Reckell Shares: "These New Writers Are Really Inspired For The 50th Anniversary. They Will Have You Laughing, Crying, Jumping For Joy!"

Days of our Lives icon Peter Reckell (Bo Brady) is giving out some major kudos to DAYS new head writing team of Dena Higley and Josh Griffith, who are apparently turning the show on its ear, and are apparently penning inspired storytelling come time for the show’s 50th anniversary milestone.
Over the last few months, everyone On-Air On-Soaps has spoken to from the cast, the powers-that-be, and those behind the scenes are over the moon with the scripts and the storylines that they are taping, and that viewers will see come this fall. DAYS turns 50 on November 8th.
Today on Twitter, Reckell shared: “These new writers are really inspired for the 50th anniversary. They will have you laughing, crying, jumping for joy!!!” In addition, Reckell said in a previous tweet: “The show has been on hiatus this week, so I went camping with family! Looking forward to Salem this next week, have some amazing material!!”
So, do you think Josh Griffith and Dena Higley have found the golden formula to make sure that DAYS 5-0 is one for the soap opera record books? What do you think will be Bo’s story when he returns on-air? Are you excited by all the enthusiasm and all the big returns from Thaao Penghlis, Stephen Nichols, Jason Cook, Reckell and more? Comment below!
This is all sounds very good for DAYS! It pleases me that Peter Reckell and other cast members are excited by the new writing team. This is great news. Looking forward to the return of Thaao, Stephen, Peter Jason, and Allison.
I just wish NBC would realize that the advance taping may have been very effective in the past, but it’s not working now. Fix that problem, it has to be addressed, so the show can quickly fix casting issues, storylines, etc. in a quicker fashion.
I agree about the 5 months, they Need to ‘re think their letting go of good actors like sonny, and Melanie…..what’s up with that…I am a little disgusted watching gay men kiss and make out…not right read the bible.
Get rid Massey he does a terrible job of acting,of will.
You sound like a homophobe, If you think seeing 2 men kissing, is discussing then dont watch Days of our Lives. You are a bigot.
Besides the stupidity of the comment regarding two men kissing I have to make one slight correction to your inane rant, Ms. Davis. Chandler Massey hasn’t played Will Horton for over a year. The actor portraying Will Horton now is Guy Wilson. Get a grip lady, your knowledge of the cast is just as poor as your alleged Biblical knowledge. The Bible actually does not address two men kissing on television. In fact it says nothing about men and women kissing on television. So if you’re gonna use that make believe book as a tool to get your point across at least have the intelligence to back it up factually. Your opinion on the matter is simply that — YOUR opinion. I, myself, happen to love seeing gay men portrayed as responsible, loving humans who express love the same way that the heterosexual community does. It’s time to drop that line of thinking. It’s not backed up factually, in fact, Christ himself NEVER condemned homosexuality. So place that in your Bible study and educate yourself. Here’s to Will Sonny and Paul. Let’s have some more gay characters come to town and educate the world on the value of these members of our world. Kudos to DAYS for moving into the 21st century and proving that love is love no matter who is partaking in it.
I don’t know it this will get pass the moderators because it is really off topic but I do wish to address Becky’s comments and those who responded to it. I will try to be brief
@ Becky– if you are going to judge fictional characters and stories by Biblical standards then you need to judge all of them. You cannot say you offended by the gay storyline because it is not right, yet be okay watching, premarital sex, adultery, murder, lying, or any other sinful behavior, because those too are not right. If you’re okay watching immorality and are only picking and choosing which sin to be offended by, then I respectfully suggest your issue with homosexuality is not rooted in Scripture but your own dislike. If you are equally offended by all displays of Biblical immorality on this soap then wouldn’t it be better for your spirit if don’t waste your time watching it, and use that hour to read Scripture, listen to worship music, pray, or better yet, go out in your community and give your time to helping others. Doesn’t that make better sense than filling your mind with “garbage” then complaining when it stinks.?
To everyone else —–There has been a huge cultural shift in attitudes towards homosexuality in recent years. It would be unfair to expect everyone to be adjusted to this shift. Trying to change minds by spewing hate to those who spew hate, is a bit like trying to teach your child not to hit others, by slapping them across the face- its pointless.
Becky is uncomfortable watching two men kiss, she might not be able to understand the source of her discomfort, and is mislabeling it, but that doesn’t make her a bad human being, just human.
If you can honestly tell me there hasn’t been at least one gay man who hasn’t felt a bit revolted by watching straight people kiss, then yes, I might say, let’s jump on the band wagon and shame Becky for having a human response to something unfamiliar to her life experience. But if not, let’s us try to be more compassionate, and show the love we wish people would show us.
Not saying we have to agree with Becky, or we cannot challenge her statements, but lets try to do it with kindness, if you truly desire her to hear your view, otherwise, hating the hater will just beget more hate from them.
As for Mateo’s statement that Jesus didn’t condemn homosexuality, thereby implying Jesus was okay with it, that isn’t quite right. Jesus was a devout Jew, and as a devout Jew, he followed the law of Moses. The Jews believe the law was given to Moses from God Himself. And according to the law of Moses, God did forbid the Jewish people from practicing homosexuality. Jesus didn’t need to tell the Jewish people not to do it, because they all ready knew what the law said about it. His silence wasn’t consent on the matter.
What Jesus did say was he came not to destroy the Law, which meant, he was saying everything in the law still applied, including the law against homosexuality, but fulfilling it. The fulfillment of the law is love. The law was God’s way to protect the Jewish people from His own holiness. it was given out of love. God’s holiness is like a fire. Fire can be beautiful, it provides light and heat, but it can very dangerous. If you go too close to fire without protection, you will get burned.
You cannot blame the fire for being fire, and doing what fire does. Likewise we cannot blame God for His holiness. God, first solution was the law, as long as the Jewish people followed the law they were protected from God’s holiness. But they weren’t able to keep the law, none of us can and they suffered the “burning”. This resulted with the Jewish people going 180 degrees in the other direction. They became law crazy– sort of like if you got burn by a fire, you might overreacted by covering yourself so much with protection from head to toe that you not able to see the fire, it’s light, heat or beauty.
So Jesus wasn’t preaching about morality, he wasn’t trying to give the world more laws to wrapped themselves in fear of God. Jesus taught redemption, a way to be close to the Holiness of God without fear of getting burn or the need for so much protection that you cannot enjoy the fire at all. And that way is love. I won’t get into the details on how Jesus did that, because this isn’t the site for that, but for those who might be curious I suggest you do explore that on sites that will explain it better than I can now.
I apologize for the length of the post and those who were patient enough to read it all, thank you for allowing me to express my thoughts.
Mary what a beautifully written post!!!!!!!!!!!!
There is an old saying “don’t argue with an idiot”. Becky, your comments are so absurd and inane they really don’t warrant a response. However, if you’re unhappy with the direction the show is taking, then by all means don’t be a part of the viewing audience. Honestly, no one is forcing you to watch the show.
Let’s hope the material the new writer’s have given lives up to the hype.
I knew having Josh as a head-writer would bring back some joy to the series. Hopefully all of these changes keep up and that the entire fiftieth year is one o be enjoyed!
Wont judge the stories for the 50th until i see them……so far the guest appearances are exciting! Keep them coming! Wish they could get Denise Alexander for a few eps.—she was Julie’s rival Susan Martin.—would love it if she showed up as Anne’s mother. Susan did have a daughter named Annie.
just for you : Denise Alexander, “Susan Martin” ex- Days : 1966-1973
an excerpt from the DAYS 50th anniversary issue.
ie: she was asked… about Susan Seaforth Hayes
“do you still keep in touch with her?”
“oh, yes. I will love her and Bill forever. I can’t explain to you the affection. it’s everlasting and it will be life long. in your life you just meet some people that become like a sister of the soul, and Susan is that to me. I also have a great fondness for Susan Flannery, or Flannels, as we called her. one of the most stunningly beautiful women you would ever want to meet and with a mouth like a truck driver! we were just crazy about her, the other Susan and me. we knew we were odd and we didn’t care! what made me laugh, made Susan laugh, made Flannels laugh. maybe it was because the show was new and we were struggling to survive, but its as close to a real family feeling in a work situation that I’ve ever known”
Denise also alluded to the fact : that she got a call from ABC.. and Denise was told by Betty Corday… “you have to do this.. they are offering you 4 times what we can give you”
hence the rest is history
I too … am in love with this woman
ps: JimH… this site… offers you some respite and distraction… enjoy… don’t worry about all your lively posts… it’s a treasure to share this with you… do take care
Susan Hunter Martin Peters
Portrayers: Denise Alexander 1966-73, Bennye Gatteys 1973-76
Date of Birth: unknown
Parents: Richard and Diane Hunter
Entrance onto Show: Susan was an old schoolmate of Julie’s
Marriages: David Martin 1966, Dr. Greg Peters 1973
Romances: Bill Horton, 1968/9, Scott Banning 1969
Children: Richard “Dickie” Martin 1967, Annie Peters 1972
Occupation: Founded the David Martin Clinic
Crimes/Incarceration: Shot and killed her husband David Martin
Other Interesting Facts: none
Date of Death: Still Alive
Susan was Julie’s best friend, and married Julie’s husband to be David Martin in 1966. Susan only married David because she learned she was pregnant as a result of a drunken one night fling with him. Both Susan and David planned to give the baby up for adoption and tell her parents it was still born, and in January on 1967 Susan delivered a premature baby boy, named Richard “Dickie” Martin. Susan vowed to keep the baby and told David they would make their marriage work for the baby’s sake. However David did not feel the same way and went to Susan’s parents with the truth, not knowing Susan had already told them the truth. Richard and Dianne Hunter told David he should take responsibility for his actions and stay with his family.
In the summer of 67 when her son Dickie died while with her husband David, Susan became so consumed with grief that in a moment of hate she shot and killed David. After a long hard trial Susan was proven not guilty by reason of temporary insanity in October of 67. After being acquitted Susan went to David’s mother to apologize, and was then shot by her. Susan had to undergo surgery and survived, but was left heart problems.
In 1969 when Scott and Janet Banning moved to town with their adopted son Bradley (In reality it was Julie and David’s child) Susan began to take care of Brad due to his mother’s fading health due to a brain tumor. After Janet died Susan became found of Brad, and of Scott. However, Julie Olson would exact her revenge on Susan and would sue for custody of Brad (Little David) and would win. Eventually Julie married Scott.
In 1970 Susan met Doug Williams, who was trying to romance her out of her money. Susan didn’t fall for Doug, but she did see a way she could top her old rival Julie. Susan payed Doug to have an affair with Julie Olson Banning, but when she eventually realized she couldn’t live with what she had done and tried to call the deal off it was too late.
When Scott left town with David after becoming separated from Julie, Susan became depressed, and while taking a walk in the park one night Susan was attacked by a man, but refused to talk about the incident because she was too embarrassed. The only clue to the attacker was a button she was grasping in her hand.
In 1971 Susan opened up a clinic with her dead husbands inheritance and began working at the David Martin Clinic. There she met and began to have feelings for Dr. Greg Peters. Suddenly Susan would learn she was pregnant as a result of the attack in the park. She considered having and abortion, but decided to keep the child instead.
When Greg took Susan to meet his family Susan seemed to have recognized Greg’s brother Eric. Eric didn’t recognize Susan, but she seemed to know him from somewhere. At another dinner at the Peters home Susan slipped into Eric’s room and found a blazer of his with a button missing, the missing button was the one Susan was clutching in her hand the night of the attack. Eric Peters was the man who raped her months ago, and the father of her child. However, upon confronting Eric, Eric claimed the sex was mutual, and Susan only panicked and ran after they had slept together. Both Susan and Eric decided it was best if they kept this a secret from Greg.
In 1973 Susan gave birth to her baby, it was a girl and she named her Annie Peters. Susan and Greg were to be married in February of 73 when Susan suddenly left town, leaving a note behind for Greg not to come looking for her. Susan left her baby Annie with Greg’s mom and went off to decide if she should tell Greg about what happened in the park months earlier.
Upon hearing that Eric had been beaten by his brother Susan returned to Salem and visited Eric. Eric had kept Susan’s secret safe from Greg, and almost payed with his life. Susan thanked Eric, and then told Greg the truth. Greg was shocked but later came around, and in 1973 Greg Peters and Susan Hunter Martin were married.
In 1974 Susan and Greg’s marriage began to dissolve, and when Greg left his job at the clinic to join Dr. Neil Curtis’ practice it put an even bigger strain on their marriage.
In 1976 Susan and Greg divorced, and Susan moved to California with Greg’s brother Eric and their daughter Annie.
ps: I had “NO” idea.. she was on DAYS
I absolutely loved Lesley and Rick Webber… OK : give me this… I loved him
ie: Lesley ; the character was killed off in March 1984. Angry fans picketed the studio, upset that the character had died.[4] In 1996, the series wrote the character back on, and Alexander appeared in a recurring status until October 2009
HOT stuff
I hope … she returns… to GH.. and rights her grandson… Nikolas… she’a a HOOT
That is inspired. A Denise Alexander – Susan Seaforth Hayes showdown. Best thing since Krystal and Alexis.
There have been rumors that Days of Our Lives will not be renewed for 2017, as of now. Days will stick around till September 2016. The ratings are really bad now. I enjoy Days but the Serena storyline is boring and Dragging on and on.
I agree boring . I do wish they would keep Brady and Melanie together .
Days needs Jack Devereaux for the 50th. His presence is missing in so many story lines!
Well I am glad to hear that they are making a true effort to make the 50th year special. I am looking forward to it, and hope it lives up to the press being put out there to create buzz. It only saddens me to think they are making this effort only because of the 50th, and not because they truly want to improve the show. Why does it take a special milestone for producers and higher ups to finally make changes to set the show back on course? Don’t get me wrong I am happy the show seems to be getting back into its old groove, but I just wonder if the 50th wasn’t on the radar, would we see these types of stories, or would we have been stuck with newies and diamonds in elephants for months to come?
Pleeeezzzeee give Peter a full time contract!!! I am 55 & watched DOOLs most of my life. Do what ever u need to keep him!!
I agree with you, they need to give Peter Reckell a contract. I really miss him as Bo Brady.
I agree. The show really needs Peter Reckell and Bo for good.
I am looking forward to August when we start seeing the new material. I just wish they could have moved it up sooner!
Me and you me both.
I’m not a Days watcher..
the 50th sounds great, I will watch it, and go from there..
To su0000,
I am a devout OLTL fan and had never seen DOOL until 1 year ago. Since then, I’ve become a regular Days viewer and really enjoy it. I watched Y&R for 2 years and finally couldn’t take it anymore. Days certainly cannot replace OLTL in my opinion; but, it is fun and generally well done. Hope you enjoy it.
I wasn’t watching when Peter left; i hadn’t watched Days in YEARS. i came in just before Kristen left, just as Sami left. I’ve LOVED THIS SHOW SO MUCH and hope to never stop watching again.
Don’t know why Peter left, but i’m not missing him. i know DOOL can sell it tho, and i may end up happy he’s back.
HEY DOOL why all the days that DAYS isn’t showing? there was a monday one week, a friday one week, now no show on thurs OR fri this week? COME ON!
Blame NBC for preempting Days — for tennis I think.
yeah; i thought about that as i was waking up this morning. of course it’s not DOOLs fault.
I’m looking forward to the 50th anniversary and the months leading up to it. But we’re still a long way away from mid to late August when some of the returning veterans start to air. I can’t believe we have to wait so long for all this good stuff to happen.
I have watched days since day one. I am SO excited to hear that Bo, Steve, and Tony are coming back to Salem. From what I hear in this report, as bad as the winter was here this past year, and our summers are so short as it is, I can’t wait for September! I am so looking forward to some decent storylines for a change. And better acting now that the veterans are returning. I hope it’s not all hype, and has some real promise in what they say. Welcome back, Bo, Steve and Tony!!! Can’t wait to see you all on screen once again.
Oh I hope so, this show is so terrible right now. They need something. And the returning faces sounds great, but we need the combo of writing and favs otherwise what is the point?
I wish Day’s never changed. I wish the new writers stay with all the old characters such as Bo, Patch, etc. I wish Bo gets back with Hope. Aiden is too shady.
Yes I’m so excited they are bringing back all my faves from the good old Days,I’m looking forward to the new storylines and fixing what needs fixing (Steve and Kayla) who never should of been apart ,I’m sure whatever they have planned will be exciting. I have faith in the new writers.
Im so excited for this & def can get behind Josh Griffith. But Im a little annoyed that Corday would turn the reigns over to TWICE fired Dena Higley. Most viewers hated her stints in the writers room and the answer is to rehire her a third time.
I think what makes that decision so frustrating is that Lorraine Broderick is right there to pair with Josh which would have been magical, but instead they go with Dena Higley again.
I def know the 50th Anniversary will be amazing, but the bigger question is what happens after this big moment. Will Josh & Dena clash over where to go next, will Josh give up like he did at YR and walk away, leaving Dena solely in charge. Ugh. And of course because Days tapes SIX MONTHS in advance, if things go badly, we the audience will have to wait forever to have this mess cleaned up.
I know some fans will say Im being doom and gloom to soon. But Im curious why a person that was let go 2 times will do an amazing job on the third try. I always wonder what makes Network exes go for mediocre vs going after the best. There are all these amazing and wonderful HW’s not being hired, but the same recycled hacks keep getting hired time and time again. And I just dont get it.
In most companies, they chase hires that have had tremendous success; Her OLTL stint was so bad Erika Slezak, who never speaks out went public, her two Days stints were lambasted and it took forever for Days to get out of that rut. But yet here we are again handing over the keys to the kingdom. I dont understand Corday. Plus he’s the same person that claimed her longtime SL’s were amazing both times & from history we know how that turned out. So as excited as I am about the 50th anniversary shows, Im worried about afterwards.
It would be great if the new material is enough to raise DAYS’ ratings and erase any cancellation rumors but based on Higley and Griffith’s previous work I’m not counting on it.
Yo…Bo…Been a long long time…Glad to see ur back…
I’m going to tune in once Josh’s material starts to air.
We’ll see how he does. He was hit and miss on YR. But compared to Pratt….
hopfully the set designers will be inspired too…. the sets are an eyesore. no matter how well the story is written, visual appeal is also important. three sets: the square, the bush, and the office with the awkard door and window in the corner. oh and the bradey booth now, and the hospital registration desk. c ‘mon
Lmao @ the bush.
This so good to hear Days has not good story lines fir our fab.actors!
Plus they have draged out the shirt lines with Nj and eve and Paige.
not only that mort fans bated the whole Nj and eve story line!!
And to.finally. have Peter back is wonderful! And Steve .
Really can’t wait for Saki.to come back too.
I’m really looking forward to the stories starting in August. Hopefully this means the current storylines will start getting better because a lot of them will be wrapping up and they will likely be getting rid of characters like Clyde to make room and save money for the vets coming back.
Days is going to be MUST SEE again starting in August and I can’t wait!
“Laughing, crying jumping for joy” sounds like a Bo and Hope reconciliation to me! Didn’t expect Bo to take Hope divorcing him and moving forward with Aiden – or any man for that matter – lying down! (Don’t think Peter could take it either! I think he likes Bo and Hope as a supercouple too!)
Days could make a huge storyline out of telling what Bo has been doing since he left Salem! Speaking of jumping for joy, I might do that if they brought back Joe Gallison (Neil Curtis), Gloria Poring (Liz) and Jed Allen (Don’t Craig).
Also they say Tommy Horton, Jr. went upstairs at Horton house and never came down again. I think the actor who played Tom Jr is deceased. But what Days could down is have Tom Jr’s grandson come down the stairs at Horton house and say something about his grandfather. A whole lot has gone on upstairs at Horton house down through the years. Tell it!
Gloria Loring
Maybe when Tommy Horton, Jr. went upstairs at Horton house, the Coneheads from SNL got him because that is where they landed when they came to earth. They landed upstairs at Horton house!
Days has a lot of potential. There are some stellar cast members. However people keep choosing to look back instead of looking forward. I mean please, how much Bo and Hope can any one stomach take. They will never be what they were in their hey day. Same for Marlena and John. Some of these couples are things of the past. Time to move forward and accept it. It’s great that they are bringing back some of the actors from the past but it would be silly to bring them back to “tease” the audience about getting something they most likely will not get. The new writing team is exciting. I like what DAYS can do when they tell a good story. But when you have boring stories like they have had for the past few months it’s hard to save them. I am wishing and hoping all the best for DAYS because when it’s good, it’s really really good.
Lets face it. All the returns will get people like me watching. But for how long ? I haven’t wanted to or been tempted to watch days in years. TITC of GH have completely destroyed that show. I hate to say it but, TIIC of soaps want them GONE. they want more of the Chew, Talk, the gag me with all the idiots. Talk shows don’t cost as much. I never watch them no matter how many soap stars they drag on, and soaps they are not tempting me at all either. I will watch Bo’s return , Stephen , etc. sounds good for now. One thing about me. If a show takes over the time my favorite soap had, I just never watch. The talk I have never watched ,never will. I am very vindictive. .I do not forget. Cable allows me to be that way. I have gotten in the habit of not putting my TV on in the daytime. They also need to bring back Jack the original !
Hi janet!
Maybe you’re talking about Matthew Ashford as Jack, but he was not the original Jack. Here’s a list containing the five Jacks, including Matthew Ashford’s three stints:
Joseph Adams (1987)
James Acheson (1987)
Matthew Ashford (1987-1993)
Mark Valley (1994-1997)
Steve Wilder (1997-1998)
Matthew Ashford (2001-2007)
Matthew Ashford (2011-2012)
Joseph Adams was blonde and scruffy…much like patch.
James Acheson was more of a preppy like the most well know Jack…Matthew Ashford, but James was not seasoned.
Mark Valley was really good, but when he was in the shower, he turned into Steve Wilder…MID EPISODE!!
I hope Matthew Ashford comes back!!!
Matthew Ashford was the Jack I liked. He was the last one, TIIC destroyed. Missy and Matt had great on screen chemistry. M A is the one I would love to see returned. At one time days was the show you didn’t want to miss. Now I just don’t bother with any soaps. Oh I know he wasn’t the original, I also remember him coming on..If I happen to turn the show on out of curiosity, I think that is a different show.
I need an adventure plot with bo hope patch and kayla.
Hype for 50th sounds great. Days has always run as a rollercoaster. Counting on Josh Griffith to bring it back to life and commerate the best of show.Thrilled to hear Peter Reckell, Stephen Nichols, Thaao Penghlis, Jason Cook, Nadia Bjorlin, Denise Alexander are all returning. So far so good. I hope we see a lot or even cameos & flashbacks from Matthew Ashford,(Jack), Kirsten Storms(Belle) James Scott (EJ), Billy Warlock,(Frankie), Jane Elliott(Anjelica Devereaux), Jed Allen(Don Craig), J Kenneth Johnson(Phillip), Ashley Benson(Abby), John DeLancie(Eugene), LeeAnn Hunley(Anna), Wayne Northrup(Roman),Michael Weiss(Mike), Christie Clark(Carrie), Austin Peck(Austin), Julie Pinson(Billie), SteveBlackwood(Bart)
I would especially like to see Jack return (give Matt Ashford a contract-he is needed so much. His whole Devereaux/Johnson family is back.) Give a special recognition to Josh Taylor as Chris Kosticheck. Have a special salute to all the Romans, like GH gave a salute
to all the Carly’s.
Hi Libby!
Maybe you think Denise Alexander is coming back because she’s on so many people’s wish list. Or possibly you heard she’s actually visiting. Are you sure Denise is on her way? I sure hope so, but I would understand if you were mistaken.
Go DAYS!!!!!
I continue to watch because I know I will miss the show if it ever goes away. One of the biggest problems is knowing that Serena, Zander, Melanie and Sonny are all leaving in the next few months and so much of the show revolves around their story lines. The show MUST stop taping so far in advance and get rid of story lines that are HORRIBLE. Did someone at NBC actually think a ceramic elephant storyline sounded interesting involving characters we do not know or care about?
Next, the show has dropped the ball on two huge story lines. Why did the writers not take the opportunity to show a different side of Theresa after she found her baby? She is still manipulative and her conversations with Anne make me realize how one-dimensional the character has been since Jen L arrived. The other missed opportunity is with Eve. After someone has been brought to their knees, why would the character not take responsibility and realize things need to change. Instead, we get to see Eve blame everyone else (just like Will) for her misdeeds. Please make these characters have just a small amount of rooting value. Will, Eve and Theresa continue to show us nothing but selfishness.
Days Of Our Lives
DAYS OF OUR LIVES: Marlena Looks Back at 50 Years in Salem

The June 22 episode of Days of Our Lives reminded us all of why Deidre Hall is iconic in the role of Dr. Marlena Evans. Here we are 50 years later, and Marlena is still the heroine of the long-running soap opera, and Deidre remains one of the most most recognizable names in the history of soaps.
To pay tribute, and to look back at the life and times of Marlena, the story starts with Marlena flipping through a photo album of her with John (the late Drake Hogestyn) over the years. As she misses him dearly, she gets a knock on the door and its none other than John’s son, Paul Narita (Christopher Sean).
With Andrew (Colton Little) in Salem working on a case, he sits down with Marlena, who says she can’t believe its been fifty years since she first arrived in Salem! Cue: Deidre’s first scenes on DAYS when she finds Mickey Horton (the late John Clarke) playing chess against himself inside the mental institution she worked.

THE FLASHBACKS OF MARLENA’S LIFE
From there, viewers definitely got the cliff notes version of the history of Marlena and entrenched within them, some of the biggest moments in Deidre’s enduring run.
Paul thinks he is looking at 70s, and early 80s Marlena while going through her scrapbook, but he is actually looking at her twin, Samantha (Andrea Hall). Cue: when Marlena confronted Samantha about impersonating her, and then later getting a call on her radio show from the Salem Strangler (Jack Coleman as Jake Kostichek) who killed Samantha thinking it was Marlena.
In the present, Belle (Martha Madison) has arrived at this time to meet up with Paul, unaware of this trip down memory lane. She wants to go over the findings in the chess board mystery Stefano willed to Marlena and John, in private with him, since Marlena previously said she wanted nothing to do with it.
Back to the history lesson, Marlena speaks highly of Don Craig and even though their marriage didn’t work out, she could find a path forward with the new love her life, Roman Brady. (Wayne Northrop however is never shown, possibly to keep the story focused on John as Roman for confusion sakes?)
Paul sees a photo of a young Carrie (Christie Clark) in the album and Marlena says she was such a godsend after losing her baby. In fact, Marlena says caring for Carrie prepared her for her having and raising her own twins, Eric and Sami. Cue: The twin visiting Marlena in the hospital.
JOHN AND MARLENA’S LOVE CONQUERED ALL
Then, in a way to get through and incorporate the wild storylines only Marlena could have been in, she tells Belle and Paul, she has been through so much in her life, how lucky she was to find John, and some of the most unbelievable experiences no one could imagine. Cue: Marlena possessed by the devil and levitating from the bed. Next, John confronting Marlena being the Salem Stalker, where she admits she killed Alice Horton, pretends she needs help, then pulls a gun on her beloved John!
The comment is made by Paul and Marlena, that she literally has been to hell and back and she could not have survived were it not for her beloved John. Cue the big emotional highpoint clips; The Pier Scene! Marlena steps out of the fog when John sees her from a distance. After believing she was dead for four years, here she was before him in one of the greatest reunions in a soap opera love story in history. What followed were other times of the life of times of Jarlena.

MARLENA’S ‘GIFT’ FROM STEFANO HAS A NEW CLUE
When Marlena makes a brief exit to the other room, Belle fills in Paul on the chess set Stefano left her mother and the photo of the Lire. Paul said he will investigate. Marlena comes back into the room and overhears, and says to promise her if things get dangerous he will back off, she does not want anyone hurt by Stefano’s games.
As the episode comes to a conclusion, it’s just Belle and Marlena going through the photo album giggling about 70s hairstyles and all the memories. Belle speaks on the impact Marlena has had in everyone’s lives, and that she is both the heart of their family and the heart of Salem.

Days Of Our Lives
Deidre Hall Marks 50 Years as ‘Days of Our Lives’ Dr. Marlena Evans

If you have ever tuned-in to the soap opera genre over the last 50 years, and witnessed some of the greatest romances, drama, classic and outlandish storylines of all-time, you would have seen Deidre Hall smack dab in the middle of it as longtime Salem heroine, Dr. Marlena Evans.
It was 50 years on this date, June 21, 1976 that Hall first appeared on DAYS on NBC which was its home for 57 years before it moved to its current streaming platform on Peacock in September of 2022.
In Hall’s first episode she was introduced as a psychiatrist treating Mickey Horton (John Clarke) at Bayview Sanitarium after he suffered a complete mental breakdown. Mickey learned that his brother Bill Horton (Edward Mallory) was the biological son of Mike Horton (Wesley Eure) with his wife Laura (Susan Flannery) and that he had been lied to for years and years. From that moment on, the rest is television and soap opera history. Days of Our Lives put Hall front and center.

There were so many heartbreaking and shocking story twists involving the beloved Marlena. One of the first was the historic crib death of baby DJ (Don Jr.) in 1980, Marlena’s infant son with Don Craig (Jed Allan). The story had never been told on daytime television and Hall’s performances received accolades from TV critics to fans when Deidre received thousands of letters from grieving mothers who had gone through the same thing in their own lives.
DAYS also brought Deidre’s twin sister, Andrea Hall Lovell to the show as her on-screen sister Samantha, who had a grudge and even locked Marlena up in a sanitarium and took her place! Fast-forward and in 1982, DAYS launched the Salem Strangler story where everyone believed Marlena was his next victim, only it turned out to be Samatha. Jake Kositchek (played by Jack Coleman) was revealed to be the actual serial killer.
Later, Deidre would assume the role of Marlena’s look-alike, Hattie Adams in 2004, once played by her sister, Andrea. Over the years, Hattie has come back to Salem and caused trouble giving Hall a chance to play a different type of character, then the always upstanding Marlena.

THE LOVES OF MARLENA
Deidre Hall struck gold with all her leading men: from the late Jed Allan, to Wayne Northrop as Roman Brady, and of course, her enduring love story with the late John Black played by the iconic Drake Hogestyn. In fact, Marlena’s 1986 wedding to John (who was believed to be Roman at the time) remains a favorite of fans to this day.
TOP MARLENA STORYLINES OF ALL-TIME
While the list is long, here are several that were some of the memorable during Deidre’s five decades in Salem!
The Possession (1994- 1995)
Considered one of the most ambiguous, outlandish and unforgettable story arcs in soap opera history, then Days of Our Lives head writer, James Reilly went there! Marlena was possessed by the devil! That included; the demonic eyes, hissing at father John (Black) the priest, morphing into creatures, and the classic levitating in her bed! It became a cultural phenomenon and cemented Deidre Hall’s status as a daytime television legend. Just ask Ryan Gosling!

The Affair with John Black (1993)
John and Marlena’s forbidden love could not be denied and they had passionate affair, while she was still married to the real Roman. Problem was her daughter, Sami (Alison Sweeney) caught her mother having sex with John on a desk that changed Sami forever.
The Salem Stalker Mystery (2003-2004)
In a shocker, Marlena was revealed to be a serial killer who bumped off several Salem favorites residents who were all alive on the island of Melaswen (spelled “New Salem” backward). Turns out, she was manipulated and gaslighted by Andre DiMera (Thaao Penghlis) to do the “killings” and had no memory of her actions.
The Pier Scene (1991)
This remains Michael Fairman TV’s all-time favorite Deidre Hall moment, which featured some of the best acting in the storied careers of both Hall and Drake Hogestyn.
In the story, a presumed-dead Marlena returns after four years. One foggy night on the pier, John is alone, and Marlena steps out of the fog to reveal herself, and is reunited with the love of her life. You can watch it any year, any decade, and in any moment, and it will have you reaching for the hankies again and again. (best music score fo a soap scene of all-time too!)

Kristen’s Secret Room Reveal (1997)
Marlena was caught in Kristen Blake’s (Eileen Davidson) elaborate web of lies, when she was held hostage in a secret wine cellar/room until John managed to track her down, leading to an iconic on-screen reunion. The classic catfight between Hall and Eileen Davidson was one for the ages.
It should be noted that Maison Blanche, Queen of the Night, Possession, Aremid and Lady in a Cage were all a part of classic DAYS storyline and all featured Hall at the epicenter of it from 1993-1996.
THE RECENT YEARS OF MARLENA
In recent years, DAYS brought back the possession 2.0 storyline under then head writer Ron Carlivati in 2021 where the devil leapt back in Marlena after taking advantage of a frail Doug Williams (the late Bill Hayes)
In 2025, viewers watched the end of the love story of John and Marlena, as John succumbed to injuries sustained in an explosion saving a vial of medication needed to bring Bo (Peter Reckell) back to life. Marlena has been a widow on-screen since June of 2025 as Hall as portrayed the good doctor struggling with her grief and to move on with her life since his death.

One story that never goes away is Stefano DiMera’s (the late Joe Mascolo) obsession with Marlena, his “Queen of the Night.” Even in death, Stefano is toying with her from the great beyond with the mysterious chess set and the missing “pawn,” that he had gifted John and Marlena in his will. The mystery is currently unfolding on all-new episodes of Days of Our Lives.
Tune-in to Days of our Lives on the Monday, June 22 episode as Marlena looks back at her 50 years in Salem.
