Disney and DirecTV Reach Agreement Ahead of Primetime Emmys Ending 13-Day Blackout Restoring ‘General Hospital’ and College Football Games to 11 Million Subscribers
In breaking news on Saturday morning, Disney and DirecTV have to terms and reached a new carriage deal lifting the 13-day blackout across numerous Disney-owned channel and the ABC network for over 11 million subscribers.
The move comes just ahead of Sunday night’s 76th annual Primetime Emmy Awards set to air live from Los Angeles beginning at 8 pm ET/5PM PT on ABC. The agreement puts General Hospital back on screens for those who watch on the alphabet network and allows all of Saturday’s college football games to be seen on ESPN and Disney’s other sports channels, plus NFL’s Monday Night Football.
Although it will be a huge relief to subscribers, the new deal will stir some heads within the communications industry. According to the agreement, the parties agreed to bring to market “multiple genre-specific options” for slimmer bundles of channels at lower price points, though no specific prices or proposed channel lineups were mentioned in this morning’s press release. Those new offerings will span sports, entertainment, kids & family, with packages including Disney’s linear networks along with Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+.

That means that, Disney’s direct-to-consumer streaming services Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+ will also be included in select
DirecTV packages under a wholesale agreement, and also to be made available on an individual basis. The agreement also gives DirecTV rights to distribute Disney’s upcoming ESPN flagship direct-to-consumer service upon its launch at no additional cost to DirecTV customers.
In a joint statement the two sides expressed, “Through this first-of-its-kind collaboration, DirecTV and Disney are giving customers the ability to tailor their video experience through more flexible options. DirecTV and Disney have a long-standing history of connecting consumers to the best entertainment, and this agreement furthers that commitment by recognizing both the tremendous value of Disney’s content and the evolving preferences of DIRECTV’s customers. We’d like to thank all affected viewers for their patience and are pleased to restore Disney’s entire portfolio of networks in time for college football and the Emmy Awards this weekend.”
16 stations were part of the blackout that will now be back on this morning for its subscribers including: ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPNews, ESPN Deportes, ACC Network, SEC Network, Disney Channel, Disney Junior, Disney XD, FX, FXX, FX Movie Channel, Freeform, National Geographic and Nat Geo Wild. In addition to ABC’s eight top owned and operated TV markets including: New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago and Philadelphia.
