Drew Barrymore’s Apology Video Backfires as Hollywood Voices Displeasure on Her Decision to Restart Production of Talk Show During Strikes
In an attempt to share her viewpoint and explain her decision to go back to work during the Hollywood strikes, and restart her daytime talk show, Drew Barrymore posted on Friday an emotional apology video on Instagram
However, the video received such a major backlash from members of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA including: name actors, writers and some organizations, mostly unhappy at her tactic and her decision. That led to Barrymore taking down the video all together.
During the now deleted video, Barrymore expressed: “I believe there’s nothing I can do or say in this moment to make it OK. I wanted to own a decision, so that it wasn’t a PR-protected situation, and I would just take full responsibility for my actions.”

The talk show host, actress, and producer went on to say: “I know there is just nothing I can do that will make this OK to those that it is not OK with. I fully accept that. I fully understand that. There are so many reasons why this is so complex, and I just want everyone to know my intentions have never been in a place to upset or hurt anymore. It’s not who I am. I’ve been through so many ups and downs in my life, and this is one of them. I deeply apologize to writers. I deeply apologize to unions.”
As to why Drew wanted her daytime show back on the air now, which previously used WGA writers, she added, “There’s a huge question of the why … why am I doing this? I certainly couldn’t have expected this kind of attention, and we aren’t going to break rules and we will be in compliance. I wanted to do this, because as I said, this is bigger than me and there are other people’s jobs on the line.”
Some of the stars who don’t agree with Barrymore’s decision include Alyssa Milano who told the AP, “I love her very much, this is not the right move. It impacts the strength of our movement. Not a great move.”

Bradley Whitfield shared: “Drew Barrymore would like you to know that undermining union solidarity at the most crucial moment in Hollywood labor history makes her the victim. This has been, like, a super tough week for her.”
Debra Messing posted: “You can choose now to halt production. You can choose to pay your employees like other talk show hosts who have stood in solidarity with the writers. There are thousands of union members jobs and livelihoods that are at stake (exponential more than those who work on your show) and the future of our beloved industry. I hope you will reconsider.”
And the WGA offered up this comment, “Drew Barrymore should not be on the air while her writers are on strike fighting for a fair deal. In reality, shows like this cannot operate without writing, and that is struck work.”

Why are none of Hollywood’s name stars upset that the soaps are in production during the strike? I fear it is because they consider them bottom of the barrel and not a “legitimate” part of their industry?
The real people suffering are the ones who need to work. I’m not necessarily a fan of Ms. Barrymore, but the unions are not paying the makeup artists, costumers, lighting technicians, etc. They have families to support. The longer it lasts, the worse off it is for everyone. I’ve started watching Canadian and European shows.
Totally agree she is not the enemy and personally the writers suck so they can stay out forever and nobody cares! I love how they are eating their own
