EXCLUSIVE Sneak Peek: Cameron Mathison Admits Playing ‘General Hospital’s’ Detested Drew Cain is “Kind of Easy” on ‘Soapy’
There is no doubt that the most hated character in soaps right now is Drew Cain played by former daytime good guy, Cameron Mathison. After all, this was that man who played Ryan Lavery on All My Children, and even though Ryan did some questionable things along the way, he never stooped to the venomous lows of the revenge-filled, Drew.
Look no further than Friday’s episode of General Hospital, when Drew arrives at the funeral for his mother Monica Quartermaine (the late Leslie Charleson) wheel-chair bound, only to be wheeled out of the service by Tracy Quartermaine (Jane Elliot). Later, back at the hospital in his bed (he’s recovering from gun shot wounds, he goes off on how he is going to take down Michael Corinthos (Rory Gibson) and the Quartermaines in a conversation with lawyer Martin Grey (Michael E. Knight) and that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
Now in the season finale of Soapy Hosted by Rebecca Budig and Greg Rikaart, dropping on Tuesday, September 30, Cameron Mathison is the special guest reuniting him with Budig, as the two played All My Children fan-favorite duo, Ryan and Greenlee, up until the last ABC episode of the series that aired back on September 23, 2011.

When the conversation turned to how Mathison, who usually is the romantic lead and upstanding guy in his TV and movie projects, is now playing the villain on General Hospital, Cameron explained what that journey has been like, including an encounter in a grocery store, and as soap opera folklore goes, you kind of know you’ve made it as a villain when fans spew hate at your character in public!
“Someone threw an apple. They’re like, ‘Drew, you are horrible!’ I was in the produce section, and they threw it at me somewhat playfully, but not really,” recalled Mathison, “I ducked it like a ninja .. actually I grabbed it… took a bite!” Next, Cameron explained this is a first for him to get to play a character like “Congressman Cutthroat.”

“I haven’t had an opportunity to play a character like Drew. As Ryan on All My Children, he went through a phase where remember, he almost hit Greenlee and we did the ‘Fight Club’ thing, but it was very short-lived and it was very clear as to why he was doing it. There was a lot of pain there and fans didn’t like that either,” shared Mathison. “But, other than that, I’ve never had an opportunity like this.” He added, “I told Frank Valentini, the executive producer at General Hospital, it’s been very interesting and fun and a good challenge, but also at the same time, kind of easy.”

Do I detest what the character is doing? Certainly. But CM deserves credit for effectively playing a bad guy who is not a murderer nor a mustache twirling psychopath.
Totally agree with you. While the writers have not been perfect with Drew’s story, CM has been great with his portrayal. Having a long term non-murderous villain is important to have on the show. In theory, fans can root for Sonny (a criminal who has murdered). But I don’t see people rooting for Drew. And that’s a great type of character to have on a daytime drama.
I agree with both of you. I never cared for Ryan or Cameron’s interpretation of nice Drew. It lacked complexity, too vanilla, and his smooth, smiley game show persona made these 2 characters dull. Now, if you take those same characteristics (smooth, smiley, game show persona) and inject them into the development of a villain, it makes him effectively sinister, slimy and slick. It works.
I like Drew. He’s nice.
Maybe Hayden can come back to GH and redeem Drew, or be his partner in crime. Miss Rebecca on GH.
He may enjoy it but, we don’t. This needs to come to a QUICK, end. We are sick of it and the ratings show it !!

GENERAL HOSPITAL Preview: Serena Sets Her Sights on Michael; Jason’s Emotional Exit from the Mob
This week on all-new episodes of General Hospital, new and old motivations come into play with dangerous consequences. According to the just released GH video spoilers video for the week of August 3-7, a bailiff calls out, “All rise!”
Now it’s Isaiah (Sawandi Wilson) vs. Curtis (Donnell Turner), as the surgeon is suing the owner of the Savoy for assault that ruined is ability to operate. At the end of the day, which of these men has enough evidence against the other? Portia (Brook Kerr) is by Isaiah’s side, while Jordan (Tanisha Harper) is with Curtis.
Next, Lucy (Lynn Herring) has a plan to get the controlling shares of Deception away from Michael (Rory Gibson). She wants her daughter, Serena (Kelly Kruger) to seduce Michael. She tells her, “Pick out your most seductive suit.” Soon, we see Serena in her bathing suit at the Metro Court face to face with Michael.
Later, there is a small baggie containing three blue pills. Nina (Cynthia Watros) ask Willow (Katelyn MacMullen), “What did you do?” We also see Michael asking the same thing of Jacinda (Paige Herschell). Leading into this week, viewers know that Willow doesn’t want the former escort anywhere near her children, Amelia and Wiley. Is this how she stops her, or is Jacinda up to old tricks and wants to frame Willow? Remember when Jacindsa drugged Drew (Cameron Mathison)? Stay tuned.
Finally, in the pick-up from last Friday’s cliffhanger, an emotional Jason (Steve Burton) continues to tell Sonny (Maurice Benard) that he cannot work for him anymore. Sonny ask, “So that’s it? You’re Out?” We fade to black.

General Hospital Fan Club Weekend brought out many of your favorites to the four day event; with the main cast gathering on Saturday, August 1. Vincent Pastore of ‘Sopranos’ Fame and ‘General Hospital’s’ Maximus Giambetti Dies at 80
Vincent Pastore, best known for his memorable role as Salvatore “Big Pussy” Bonpensiero on HBO’s The Sopranos has passed away.
The veteran actor was found dead on August 1st in his home in the Bronx, New York. Pastore was 80-years-old. The cause of death is yet to be determined.
As well as his role on The Sopranos, many soap fans will recall he played multiple smaller roles on the beloved One Life to Live from 1995 and 2004. However, in 2008, he landed the short-term role as Maximus Giambetti on General Hospital.
PASTORE WANTED TO BE ON GENERAL HOSPITAL
Maximus was the mobster father of Sonny Corinthos’ (Maurice Benard) bodyguards: Max (Derk Cheetwood) and Milo (Drew Cheetwood)
According to Soap Opera Digest, Pastore told Soaps In Depth back in 2009, after appearing in a SOAPnet promotional campaign as a celebrity fan of General Hospital: “‘I’d love to be on the show. So they called up GH’s casting director (Mark Teschner) and Bobby (Robert Guza Jr. ex-head writer, GH) and they wrote me in!”
Pastore was a huge General Hospital fan from way back, who at one point told producers that he would watch the ABC soap opera while working in bars and nightclubs in the 70s and 80s.
Throughout his decades long career, Pastore appeared in films including: Goodfellas, Carlito’s Way and Men of Respect, The Jerky Boys: The Movie and the 1996 HBO TV movie Gotti.
In TV, besides The Sopranos, Pastore’s credits included: Law & Order, The Practice, Son of the Beach, Queens Supreme, Hawaii Five-0, Wu-Tang: An American Saga, plus the miniseries The Last Don II. Most recently, Vincent was a series regular on Gravesend and guest starred on Yellowjackets.
Pastore is survived by his daughter, Renee, son-in-law and granddaughter.
