Many General Hospital stars have shared their sentiments and “thank you’s” publicly on Twitter over the last 24 hours for the exiting head writer of General Hospital, Ron Carlivati.
Yesterday, news broke that Carlivati had been let-go of his duties by ABC executives as head writer of GH, in favor of the co-head writing duo of Shelly Altman and Jean Passanante, who would begin in the position as of August 10th. Here are a few of the tweets that have sprouted up on social media since news of Carlivati’s departure with more expected in the days ahead:
Michelle Stafford wrote: “I want to thank the brilliant @carlivatiron for creating this amazing character I have the great fortune of playing everyday on #GH !!!”
Parry Shen (Brad Cooper) shared: “TY @carlivatiron for the chance to showcase stuff I never got to do in my 18yr career & the challenge to do stuff I didn’t know I could do.”
Kathleen Gati (Liesl) tweeted: “Thank you @carlivatiron for the evil, the crazy, the tears, the quirky, the song and dance… and all the other faces of Dr. Obrecht!! XOXO”
Laura Wright (Carly) stated: “Thank you @carlivatiron for your words- filled with heart and laughter. Thank you for your hard work and enthusiasm XOXO!!”
Jean Passanante (New co-head writer) paid an homage to Carlivati’s work tweeting: “Thank you, well-wishing fans. And thanks @carlivatiron for the moving, hilarious, romantic, suspenseful, nutty things you brought to #GH.”
Nancy Lee Grahn (Alexis) made a more general statement in regards to anyone having the arduous task of writing a soap day in and day out: “Being headwriter of soap is inarguably hardest writing job in TV bar none.”
Jackie Zeman (Bobbie) “@carlivatiron Enjoy this time off as I’m sure u will be stepping into something new soon. Best wishes 2 u always. Happy thoughts #GH”

Lets never forget he was brought in and had minimal time to save GH from cancellation in 2012. Along with Valentini, they did. Since their takeover , never missed an episode until last September. Something happened where Imy interest was not maintained. I believe carlivati does extremely well under pressure( OLTL’s last year was awesome and his first year at GH was great)because both soaps had cancellation rumors running rampant at that time. I love most of characters , but how do you writ thoroughly and accurately for50+ ( total, not age) characters. The show has difficulty with focus at this point. Hiring talented performers has been the main objective. I think most actors on the show appreciate his contribution. I hope the future head writers fix some problem sand at the same time raise the ratings in the demos that need to be raised.13 weeks at an all- time low in the 18-49 demo was not good.i noticed those numbers were better when Kimberly McCullough made appearances.
At the time ABC had to make a decision for the Fall 2012 schedule, when GH was renewed, April 2012, the ratings were actually worse than Guza, only at 2,250,000 total viewers and worse in demos. The Revolution was just much worse and then GMA afternoon was horrid. ABC had nothing to fill the slot and couldn’t come up with anything else.
Yes, over time and for a period, ratings improved, but they didn’t save it. That was not the timing or the situation.
The rating initially rose because OLTL and AMC fans wanted to give GH a chance after their aforementioned soaps were canceled.
I need to stress again that Ron did not save GH from cancellation.
I totally agree with AJQ.
If either alternatives had done better in the ratings than General Hospital, it would have been gone in 2012. This doesn’t negate what Ron and Frank accomplished because they had a huge task.
I still don’t put it passed ABC that they want a cheaper alternative and it’s just a matter of time.
Fans and viewers should do their best to enjoy GH while it is still on.
I’m conflicted about his firing
On one hand I never want someone to lose their job-it’s a tough economy & whereas I’m sure he was paid handsomely he now has nothing coming in by way of income.
BUT
On the other hand his vision-his writing has the show a mess. Long time vets are now day players to the never ending cycle of his “pets” Ava, Nina, Franco just to name a few. Stories he himself took time to build yield no payoff to their fans.
I think it’s nice the actors thanked him, but I’m not sure it’s 100% warranted
I’ll preface my comments by saying I really liked RC’s work & wish he were staying. But, these dismissals rarely come without warning. I’m sure he’s been receiving feedback on what ABC wants to see from GH for some time. It’s his, & FV’s, responsibility to respond to that.
If anything, what is apparent to me from past comments by GH’s actors, is that GH may be too actor-friendly, which is why the stories are so disjointed. GH actors won Emmys because the writing has been geared to giving them meaty scenes they can sink their teeth into. But, once those moments are gone, the points from A to B to C can get weak, silly, & nonsensical. RC & FV are loved by the actors & crew. But, perhaps separating them will let FV be less prone to indulging the actor-friendly side of himself, and allow him to be more disciplined in requiring well-structured plots that build in dramatic intensity & actually go somewhere, using talent already there instead of getting name talent & writing scenes for them alone that have no bearing to plots already playing out.
He’s a lawyer as well. He has other means of income.
Tony Geary has shown himself to be an egomaniac. His backstabbing comments as he left GH were disgusting. I think he diminished himself as a vindictive jerk. Ron Carlivati helped save GH from cancellation. ABC was going to wipe it out, like AMC and OLTL. No class.
Agree
I agree June W.They bent over backwards to accommodate Tony with 4month vacations every year and he’s leaving and taking GH with him.So sad.Rock on Ron!!!!
,
RC was not the first HW to have to deal with Tony Geary’s histrionics, story writing and extended vacations. He was one in a long line of them, they can thank Frons and Valentini for agreeing to that crap and assuming the soap couldn’t survive without him. Garbage!!! Write decent well constructed and paced stories, don’t trash your legacy familys and characters and people watch
I’m with you, June … never understood the allure and fascination with Geary despite his eight shiny trophies. No show should be “built” around a tent-pole character (…that mentality went out in the 1950’s with SFT’s “Jo”?!) It’s always baffled me why some shows parade one character/actor front-and-center, almost stuffing them down viewers’ throats while the ensemble are just expected to ‘support’ their long overdue reign in the sun: this goes for AMC’s Lucci, OLTL’s Slezak, GL’s Zimmer, B&B’s Flannery and (esp.) Y&R’s Braeden. I tune-in for the ensemble, not “The Luke Spencer Show”, and personally, I’m glad ABC is not enabling and falling all over themselves over this one character any longer. Go with God and have a nice life in Amsterdam and let’s let other people have a chance to shine in Port Charles!!
I agree with you to a large extent especially where Lucci is concerned
So you dont like the “Luke Spenser Show?” Would you have rather seen the “Nathan West Show?”
Susan Lucci and Julia Barr were CENTRAL to AMC. The genius of it was the ability to bring in riveting characters alongside them (Jesse, Angie, Kendall, Zach , Vanessa, Billy Clyde, Estelle, etc.)
I agree! I didn’t like reading that article in SOD at all! (And Luke was my favorite character – Tony Geary not so much now!)
It’s not exactly backstabbing when you make disparaging comments about a person in an interview which you know will be seen by that person.
Geary was honest and not overly critical at all. He merely said he did not care for some of Ron’s writing and that Ron never once spoke to him.
That was a lie. It was confirmed by other people in the industry that Tony talked to Ron several times. Tony also sang the praises of the writing team after the anniversary episode. Tony decided the direction of his exit storyline and gave them a short period in which to do it. He didn’t like Ron’s execution of HIS story. Who cares what he thinks? He’s gone anyway. They should’ve let Tony go two years ago, then they could’ve done the show they wanted without Tony’s rewrites.
@TVGurl – Tony Geary, IMO, has been very even-handed in his praise & criticism. In the past, he has said he liked what RC wrote for Fluke, & admitted that his health problems definitely affected the story arc & appreciated all the accommodations GH made for him. He liked the anniversary show, and all the scenes w/Laura, Lucky, Holly, & Ethan. But, like many fans, he felt adding Frank & Jennifer Smith was unnecessary, and resurrecting Jake was ridiculous. I don’t get how so many people can have a beef with him when his criticisms are basically the same ones they have. To say Geary “rewrites” the show is grossly inaccurate. If that were true, the Smiths & Jake definitely would not have been there. He will take issue with his lines, but no one else’s. Geary has always been willing to jump ship for the right to rewrite his dialogue, and his valued vacation time. What’s interesting is that ABC brass have always been willing to knuckle under to his demands because his salary demands have not been as high as his peers on other networks. IMO it’s weird that fans don’t like the fact that he’s been a good advocate for himself. Personally, I respect someone who knows what they value, has priorities, and is willing to go to the mat for it. Don’t blame him for being a good poker player when ABC could have folded at any time.
He took pay cuts to stick up for his character. How many of these other Hollywood types would sacrifice money for principal?
he didn’t ‘take pay cuts’ .. he negotiated the right to stick his fingers in the pie/re-write his storyline as he saw fit in lieu of getting raises … BIG difference
I enjoyed Ron’s writing on General Hospital as well as for One Life to Live. I just disagreed that he was fired. General Hospital’s time has been bounced around from 2pm Cental and 1pm Central. In my area it is pitted against “Days of our Lives.” It is too bad that every soap has to compete against each other for what little soaps are currently on television. I thought Ron’s writing was wonderful and I for one am sorry that he was fired. Best of luck to what project he will be going onto next.
I agree with you!! I think Ron’s writing has been fantastic!! He is the head writer, but there are other writers. It breaks my heart to not have him on the GH team any longer!
Ron’s writing has been fantastic?
Really? The stories were poorly paced, unfinished, and full of more holes than Sponge Bob.
My point is that he was a part that saved General Hospital. It was a huge shock that April when it was announced that both AMC and OLTL were to be terminated. He brought so much history back to GH. As for you analogy of “more holes than Sponge Bob”, I disagree! Please give examples. The scenes with Nina, Ric and Madeleine are amazing!! Ric is so evil. He lost Liz. He is greedy! I could name other scenes. The man just lost his job!!!
Ron hasnt written one story with a beginning, middle and end!
I agree with you.. I loved his writing and it kept me watching GH.. now sure I will be able to tolerate the new writing regime.. will see… Days has been painful to watch these many years with the slooowww stories… Ron had nice quick and surprising stories that did not treat me like an idiot…. I know it is a soap and not always in reality .. but he provide good entertainment for me!
Surprising news. I thought things were going well with Frank as the writer. Wonder what happened behind the scenes.
Frank Valentini is Executive Producer of GH. Ron Carlivati was Head Writer. But FV still has to answer to ABC executives. I’m guessing FV is on borrowed time, being given one last chance to raise ratings, and he was told someone, or both of them, had to go. Really, would you fire yourself?
Can’t say I was all that surprised, Mo. Storm clouds seem to have been brewing for awhile now. The minute Jean Passanate was hired I was convinced she was slated to be transitioned from co-headwriter to HW. I didn’t expect RC to be given the boot so abruptly but the handwriting was on the wall.
No clue what happened behind the scenes but I doubt it was just one thing. I would guess Tony Geary’s outspokenness about his unhappiness about the writing for Luke and his ultimate exit was just the last nail in RC’s coffin. RC’s conduct on social media didn’t win him any fans either.
TG could obviously been more gracious but he isn’t the first actor to express unhappiness with the writing, some more subtly than others. But a lot of the criticism from both actors and fans is consistent and valid and basically comes down to putting strung together plot points ahead of character and story development.
I don’t watch GH, but do read SOD and here and it seemed like things were going well. I guess not.
Should be Ron. Got em mixed up.
yesterday was a sad day for the soap world. I just hope Ron knows a lot of fans are on his side. He will be missed
Yes Nancy he will missed, Days needs to hire Ron right away.
I meant he will be missed. Lol.
DAYS already has its highly-anticipated and praised new regime in place, with the regime’s work debuting next month.
It was not a sad day for real GH fans. This was the right decision.
we all have our own opinions. But I do consider myself a real GH fan, have been watching since the days of Jesse, Steve and Audrey.
Amen Harry! I dont know if these are the same people but how many people have been bitching about the horrible writing and now they are supporting Ron and throwing TG under the bus for speaking his mind!
Interesting that the ones tweeting are the ones that should exit the show. Too many unimportant characters on this show.
Very sad news, Ron saved General Hospital from being cancelled. Maybe they can revive One Life To Live. I know I sound crazy? But you never Know.
There’s still a lawsuit out there between Prospect Park & ABC. Talk about hanging storyline. Will that thing ever get resolved? I think PP continues to own the rights to AMC & OLTL. But, they were an internal mess who even Susan Lucci did not want to do business with. RC should stay far away from them IMO.
Ron did not save General Hospital from being canceled. He has ruined GH and I just hope the new team of writers can salvage the wreckage or it really will be canceled…..thanks to Ron.
As much as I have appreciated your comments in the past and have certainly made my fair share of comments about the writing, RC is not solely to blame. I think there is plenty to spread around and we are just not privy to all the machinations by insiders and TPTB. I am hoping this mess is a wake up call for them though…
His final nail was resurrecting Jake and laying an egg with Luke’s departure. Two horrible stories!
Being a four-decade CBS Daytime fan, I am new to watching #GH and only sporadically tune-in to catch our ex-pats (Roger Howarth, Billy Miller, Michelle Stafford, Maura West) continue to shine in new roles!! That being said, I’ve enjoyed the storylines and thought Carlivati did a fine job. (I’ve seen Altman/Passanante’s work on ATWT and #YR and wasn’t ‘bowled-over”, so I’m not sure they will be the quick-fix many are hoping for. (Although I would LOVE to see the return of the delicious Diane played by underrated #CarolynHennesy; that broad could win an Emmy by reading a menu!!) Maybe CBS/Sony will grab a clue a rescue the hot-mess #YR has become and eliminate Pratt and give Carlivati a shot in Genoa City … he likes a challenge by rescuing shows in trouble (#OLTL, #GH), certainly RESTLESS fits the bill!!
Geoffrey Martin-Cyr, I about hit the floor with your idea of Y&R hiring Ron! Brilliant! I don’t know that Jill Farren Phelps would ever do it though. He isn’t one of her pets. Y&R is such a God-awful mess right now, it makes GH look brilliant. Great idea though!
@Geoffrey and Jenny – I agree – what a great idea! Maybe he could fix the mess that Y&R has become?
So Ron couldnt write a decent story for GH and you want him to go to the #1 rated soap? Bad idea!
I for one, am glad they let him go. The stories are ridiculous, make no sense, and truly made me not want to watch anymore. I have been watching since day one. I think the new writing team should remember what the name of the show is……Everything about the hospital has been almost eliminated! Get back to what made the show a hit in the first place!
RIGHT NOW GENERAL HOSPITAL IS THE WORST SINCE I STARTED WATCHING TWO YEARS AGO!!!!!!! I END UP RECORDING AND GOING THRU MOST STORY LINES…HORRIBLE…..ONLY KEEP WATCHING FOR BILLY MILLER-MAURA WEST- LETS HOPE THOSE STORY LINES CAN MOVE FORWARD!!!! GOTTA IMPROVE OR I AM DONE …BUT NO ONE REALLY CARES……
You’ve been watching a whole 2 years and it’s the worst you’ve ever seen..whoopie. You’re a newbie to this soap, and while you may not have liked the past 2 years, you really have NOTHING to compare it to, since these two years have been under Frank and Ron. Those two brought GH back from the brink of extinction! Perhaps not all of it has been good, or brilliant, BUT….there have been some exceptionally amazing times as well. If you quit watching, I doubt GH will fold. Some of us have been watching from the beginning of the show, and will continue to do so no matter who is producing and writing. Oh, and if all you’re doing is ff through most of the show, you’re really not watching GH, and you really don’t know WHAT is going on. You’re only interested in a couple of the actors, not in the show itself.
YOU ARE SO FUNNY IN YOUR COMMENTS….I HAVE BEEN WATCHING SOAPS FOR MORE YEARS THAN I CARE TO TELL YOU AND YOU KNOW WHEN THE STORIES ARE SOO BAD IT IS TIME TO FF OR STOP WATCHING!!!! I HAVE BEEN WATCHING THE ENTIRE SHOWS UNTIL LAST WEEK…..WATCH WHERE YOUR SOAP ENDS UP IT IF KEEPS GOING IN THE SAME DIRECTION…..GLAD YOU ARE ENJOYING IT…. P.S. MY MOTHER WATCHED FROM THE VERY BEGINNING.
Judy is right. GH has been abysmal and I have been watching since 1980
Well said Sheri! I agree with you!
I enjoy Ron Writing on General Hospital there are no words to express to him for what he and Frank did to save GH from a certain death 2 years ago. But this past last half year GH was unwatchable the Fluke story line along with the reveal of Jason and TG Farwell were bad.
Hi Joe..
The Fluke story was too long, then again it was somewhat kept going because Tony was out (back surgery) for six months..
Now that Luke has exited the upcoming month of RC’s writing will be good, back to Ron’s good stuff ..
It’s a shame he will not be with GH to continue on now that Fluke is over and Luke has left stage right ..
enjoy the upcoming month …
I’m sure that before too long fans will be complaining about the new headwriters just as they’ve done for years. They thought that Guza was terrible too. I, for one, have enjoyed RC’s GH. It was far from boring with the exception of the Franco/Nina s/l. I like my soaps with some action, and RC certainly delivered in that area.
I have watched GH since I was a little girl alongside my Mom. Sometime the stories got somewhat boring or dragged on too long. But on the whole I find it very entertaining. I do think when they are creating a story they should give more time to the actors playing their part. Things get lost if you see them for a day or two then dont see them again for a week or two. The only storyline that has me totally upset is the dragging out of the Jason/Jake story. First, Steve Burton should never been left go. I think Biller Miller is excellent actor but he is Bill on Y&R. I think Ron has done a good job but dragged too many stories out. I wish him nothing but good luck.
Big mistake!!!’
I’ve been watching GH for 52 years through all the ups and downs. Ron along with Frank saved my beloved soap. My only complaint with Ron is the lengthy drawn out story lines. Fluke took forever. Jason/Jake needs to end and reveal Rosalie’s secret, please. I wonder if all the Ron haters are now going to hate Shelly and Jean. Thanks Ron for saving GH.
RC thanks for the memories of Luke/Fluke story line: you had us all at Hello–
you know that –that was masterful…
Nina running down the hospital hallway when she was supposed to be in a wheel chair, that is still so funny to me.
Thanks for making us remember the past, with the nurses ball, and the entire 50th year celebration that was so masterfully put together..The very nice goodbye to AG with the memories from the past, the cast, that was a masterful as well…Thanks for all of it, I have enjoyed it daily..Go forth and now that you are human we all lose jobs now and then: Truly its a opportunity to reset your life…and try something new…Good luck to you.
So most fans think that Ron had the power to push these story lines forward without the blessing of daytime tv heads and Frank Valentini? Ron was the scapegoat, Frank should have been fired too because he has creative control over GH. Ms. Drummer at ABC who oversees GH is Frank’s boss and could have reigned them both in. The ratings had been falling for weeks now.
The comments are by persons who owe their GH “careers” to RC. Nancy’s comment says nothing about RC. JZ was, appropriately, generous because RC brought her back. These others? Characters that add nothing, whose presence has not been exceptionally helpful to the GH brand. When I see comments from the likes of Jane Elliot, Finola Hughes, Maurice Benard, Jason Thompson, KeMo, Laura Wright, Becky Herbst…then I’ll take this seriously. Otherwise, meh comments from meh persons who are by no stretch the “real” GH (JZ aside, and hers are special circumstances).
Laura Wright tweeted a gracious comment about Ron I don’t remember what she said though lol
I stand corrected on Laura wright. However, RC ruined Carley by hooking her up with Franco. But…he did create Lena Spencer for her, and those short turns as the Spencer mom were LAURA’s best of the year, imo. So, given what he gave her as Lena, a “thank you” is in order. The other folk tweeting? As I said, meh characters who all (with the exception of JZ) owe their existence to RC. It would ungenerous of these folks NOT to thank him.
Mike, I think Laura wrote what many see in their high school yearbook–“you seem like a nice person–wish I could have gotten to know you better.”
i co sign your post 100% tristan!!
Ron never had me fall asleep..
I cried I laughed I enjoyed watching, everyday.
GH is not a traditional soap.
GH has its’ own.. It is the most modern soap.
I loved the action!!
I had fun when the vets were brought in by Ron even if for a guest appearances.
Ron would give us call outs to past stories and long gone vets.
He brought back the Nurses Ball, a GH fun tradition that highlighted the casts musical talents, it was fun.
Ron put his heart and soul into GH, that was obvious..
I’d bet the cast is not at all happy he gone.
I do not believe they have confidence in Jean and Shelly..
It was a mistake to bring in Y&R fired rejects.
There is a saying;
be careful what you wish for;
Consider the implications. We think we know what we want, but we can never really know until we’ve got it. And sometimes when we have, we discover we never really wanted it in the first place – but then it’s too late… umhum ..
SU – I agree!
“Ron never had me fall asleep..
I cried I laughed I enjoyed watching, everyday.
I loved the action and the comedy!!”
The Fluke story got dragged out because of AG’s back surgery. There wasn’t much anyone could do. Before that, the ratings were very high.
There are some very “whiney” fans on this site that bad mouthed Ron – but I don’t think that they represented the majority.
This seems like ABC made a very short-sighted and bad decision. I am very disappointed.
su0000, the Nurses Ball was a joke! They had no budget, no imagination and they acts were that from a high school play! Terrible!
Well, so much for Frank and Ron being a team!
Most of those actors should be kissing Ron’s ass because I have a feeling they will be the first to go so they better hope he lands someplace where he can take them.
i have mixed feelings about this. he is a great writer and loves daytime and the soap genre but sometimes the stories seemed too self consciously clever and the show didnt seem the same. you cant reinvent daytime its been tried before and it fails.
but i do wish him well he probably saved the show from cancellation lets face it!
If all the bitching fans had not bad mouthed him this never would have happened. The stories were getting strange but he was the best writer ever. I am devastated.
Oh yes, Nancy it is OUR fault Ron was fired. Get real–it’s the ratings and the ratings were plummeting due to bad writing.
Hi Nancy..
The worst threat to the soaps/GH are the complainers with their constant crying over this and that..
When a soap goes under a good part of not trying to save it is because of the complainers bellowing out their hate of the soap..
If they would care to save the soaps they need to shut the fug up 🙂 lol
lol,lol,lol!
Bitching fans don’t have that much power…unless they turn off their TV’s. It’s all in the ratings.
Thats true. Networks generally do what they want as long as ANY show is making a profit.
Right, Rebecca, and Suoo, I will repeat your words back to you when you start bitching about GH the way you used to bitch about Y&R before Pratt took over as head writer.
But guess what? You have the right to bitch if you don’t like what you’re watching, and I will always defend that right even when I disagree with your opinion. I promise never to tell you to STFU as you have done to other commentators who dare to complain about GH. You also have the right to turn off the television. However, as Rebecca asserts, your power lies with the remote control.
Most people on this site DONT bitch, we voice our opinions! Were all happy the show is still on. If this is the best writing you’ve seen on this show you having been watching that long!
Wish someone would do something at YR with Pratt the destroyer of couples
They are #1 and like Rebecca said before, if soap fans tune out, that is really the only way to get your frustrations heard.
Ron, I am so sorry to see you go. You pulled GH out of the fire. You saved the show. And for that I say “THANK YOU”. I really appreciated all of the work you did for GH.
GH along with any other show on TV has / had stories that do get stale but I think ABC should have given you and your writing team another chance to make it right.
I wish you much success in your writing. Who knows, maybe GH will write you back in in a couple of years. Bye for now….
THANK YOU!!!
Never cared for people who kick somebody when they are down lot going on with the show but not all of it RC’ fault. Just remember you never get everything you want in a soap! Nancy if you are out there your book is at my neighbor’s did not get to me in time. Breathtaking scenery I am seeing and when I get back I will read it. Oh and Suoo I truly am sorry I know you were a big fan! As for Mr. Logan with TV Guide I hope you are feeling good about yourself because your fight with RC and leaking stories is truly unprofessional.
k/kay, hi..
aww thank you..
Yes I am a big RC fan..
He has now pulled out of the Luke stuff and his last month is looking very good..
It’s back to Ron’s good stuff..
I really liked the past weeks.. Lots of sniffles and tears, the writing and acting brought out the best of all during the past 3 weeks..
It was very good, not perfect, but it held the heart and soul of the final goodbye to all he loved and was loved by..
(and that’s what it is about)
I completely disagree with you, Kay.
And Ron kicked many a person when they were down (just ask Sean Kanan)
He fought bitterly and foolishly with fans when they complained about GH on Twitter. Michael Logan was his biggest cheerleader but then Ron turned on him when Logan mentioned that Duke would soon be killed. We all knew this–it was in the previews and it was not a leak or a spoiler.
I do not feel sorry for him one bit as he has been well compensated, he has behaved abhorrently and he wrote very badly.
@Harry now sweetie I never said RC was a charmer just trying real hard to stop piling on the man lost his job so it goes. ML and I go way back he hurt a friend who was my neighbor at the time an actress and it was horrible the lies he wrote simply because he did not like her. His interview with TG he baited him what purpose did it serve?
Quote Tony;;
””I get scripts where I’m literally told where to take a deep breath and what line to cry on and when to turn my body. Sometimes the writer’s stage directions are longer than the scenes themselves,” Geary told TV Insider, with deliberate care made not to mention Carlivati by name. “The great playwrights don’t do that… If you must write this way, then go write a novel. In a novel, the author tells the readers everything ..”
((Ron was not mentioned by name because- being ” told ”where to take a deep breath and what line to cry on and when to turn my body.” that Tony was upset over is the -director- directing, not the writer..
Tony also said–
He and Ron have never spoken, never exchanged words
So it would not be RC talking with him/telling him how to do anything, it is the director..
And- Ron is not often on set, he’s in NY..
And Tony said;;
”I get scripts where I’m”
^^ scripts(s) Tony is talking of the whole not just of one script.
Since he did not say Ron he could be referring to the directing director, which it is..
LOL it is confusing as to what is actually being conveyed lol ..
Tony didn’t care for his story or the bringing back of little Jake and whatshisname lol.. That is obvious but he did not bash RC as some are wetting themselves over as Tony’s huge bash on RC..
What Tony said was not all that horrible, not at all
He just does not like to be told/directed what to do.. that was his bitching ,,
Tony’s first words were aimed at director not writer..
”Being told how to do my job. Acting is an interpretive art and that’s really forgotten on our show, where the actors are expected to be slavishly devoted to the stage directions in the script.
ahhaa! Tony does not like to be told what and how to anything..
That is his problem LOL he was not on full bitch of the writing, but the directing..
(perhaps he had a drink or two before the interview.. or his back was in pain..
He slammed poor Wendy too lol .. Tony needs a reast and will be better soon 🙂
In this PC world we now live in your not allowed to say anything for the fear you might hurt someones feelings. Tony voiced his opinion and I respect him for that!
I think there is a lot wrong with General Hospital but don’t wish the guy ill. I do think many of the characters have to go and the vets need to be brought in and families strengthened. There needs to be a hospital! Get the main families back in order. I was surprised I liked Valerie more with Bobbie than hanging around with Lulu and Dante. That Lulu is a twit. Haven’t seen the former actress but I bet she was better. Make characters who actually have substance and do something.
It was Ron’s big idea to make Roger Howarth – Franco.
Worst writers decision ever made on daytime.
Are you sure that was Ron’s idea? I have never seen it attributed anywhere. It could just as easily have been ABC’s (in fact, I thought it had “ABC executives” written all over it). But if Ron came out and said “it was my idea,” then that’s different.
I do agree it was a TERRIBLE idea, whoever made it.
I dont care if it was Marlon Brando, I HATE the character of FRANCO and Roger is wasting his time playing that jerk!
I think as with every soap theres highs and lows. Ron did some great stuff and some not so great stuff but I always got the impression he was impassioned and cared about what he was doing which was a godsend afte the guza/jill mess which was thoughtless and sexist trash. Ron was a breath of fresh air.
but theres been misses…I think the jasons stuff could have been done a little better, lukes exit hasn’t been great aside from lucky scenes but then again the anniversary show was wonderful. Ava and Nina and franco have been winning additions. Alexis and other older cast members getting better air time has been wonderful.
so I’m not against a new vision I just hope that the new team cares as much as Ron.
I think RC was a great writer the stories are great. The pacing is off. There are sooooooo many characters that you never really get a chance to get involved. Then it took a year to figure out Fluke, a year for Jason to be Jason, and a few weeks for Valerie to sleep with Dante. Plus there are a few substandard actors who seem to be on every day but that’s casting not writing. I hope the new writers keep going in the same direction but streamline so we get more bang for our buck and Jason finds out he’s Jason.
Well I have been watching the show on and off for 30 yrs and Ron is the worst writer they ever had.He turned it into a joke and brought on bad actors from OLTL to replace the great actors from GH.Glad he was fired.
My observations as a longtime viewer of both OLTL and GH are that Ron C. writes plot-driven stories rather than character-driven stories. He does this at least 75-80% of the time. Is it all him, or does the network interfere with his vision? I’d guess that he has had orders from the network suits at least some of the time, but I can’t blame everything on that. Some of it has to be him.
In soap opera especially, writing stories that focus on plot and “forcing” the characters to do things that serve the intended plot, despite the fact that it may be way out of character for them, well that is a very unfortunate thing. Ron likes shock and awe from a plot standpoint, and he will make his characters do anything to get there. As a viewer, I can accept almost any plot twist, as long as it is entertaining and AS LONG AS IT IS IN KEEPING WITH CHARACTER. When I see too much plot driving character, I tend to quit watching. This is exactly what I did with both OLTL and GH when Ron was at the helm. I resumed watching OLTL for the last 9 or 10 months of its run for two reasons: 1) Roger Howarth returned to the show as Todd and I was curious about that storyline and 2) the news of cancellation came down, and I was curious to see how the show would finish. To give Ron credit, he wrote more character-driven story for OLTL in the last 8 months that the serial was on the air than he ever did in the previous 5 years! What is it about cancellation – or just the threat of cancellation – that makes the great storytelling come alive? Ron took OLTL off network with a lot of dignity, and for that I was glad. I just find it sad that it took cancellation to see more character-driven story.
The other thing Ron rarely does is give payoff. He almost never allows for that. In soap opera, the audience must have payoff. Even if they only get it in small increments, or the form of a dream, etc., they still must get some payoff along the way. You cannot tell a story for 2 years without giving any payoff whatsoever. The viewers get tired of waiting. I understand that the big payoff must often be denied to build suspense, but small payoffs are possible, necessary, and usually easy to deliver. Ron almost never delivers on that front. Even the small payoffs. He wrote some wonderful payoffs on OLTL, but it was only because the show was ending forever (or so he thought). Again, why does it take cancellation?
Ron continued his penchant for plot-driven storytelling and eternal denial of payoff on GH, so after a few months of his writing, I quit watching (had been a 30 year viewer). I think a lot of folks turned to GH when AMC and OLTL went off the air, but they eventually fell away for a myriad of reasons, not the least of which were the huge cast, the plot-driven writing, and the lack of satisfactory payoff and/or resolution to almost everything. The cast (of GH) became so huge that sometimes weeks went by before characters in a certain story arc were seen again. People lost interest.
It’s no secret that ABC wants out of the soap opera business. I don’t think GH will be too much longer for this world no matter who writes it. It’s too bad that the soap opera genre must suffer such a long and painful death, but it seems that no one in charge is interested in quality storytelling. They are mostly interested in the bottom line. I believe that Ron loves soap opera, but he lacks respect for his audience. You can’t just continually throw shocking plot points against the wall and hope they stick. You can’t force characters with decades of history to act or react in ways the audience knows they never would. You can’t deny your viewers any form of satisfying payoff – forever! You can’t presume to write evenly and with quality for a cast of more than 50 people. You can’t shove new characters down viewers throats and expect them to be instantly accepted. It just doesn’t work that way.
Very good post, I concur. We women (the target audience) want to get to know the characters, watch them interacting in relationships with each other, especially love stories, we don’t care so much about the plot, lol. It’s the CHARACTERS that keep us tuning in. They become like old friends. You are so right about payoff. I had high hopes for RC because I saw all the payoff he was giving the characters, WEDDINGS for characters like Tina&Cord, Gigi&Rex, and I just know if it weren’t for Prospect Park, there would have been a lot more. All this proved to me that RC knew how to write a romantic story. Loved the angst between Natalie & John, and the payoff was beautiful! You just KNEW they’d get married and live happily ever after. But then what did he do as soon as he came to GH? He broke up Natalie&John! After how many years fans had been waiting for them to get together? Please tell me .. has there been even one decent wedding on GH since RC took over? Soaps used to have at least one big wedding per year. Why has that been given low priority? Women like weddings!
Your comments about the lack of payoffs is dead on. Perfect example is the “sticky door” era back in the early 80’s. Even though it seemed to take forever for LnL to reunite, we hung in there week after week because all the little payoffs along the way hinted at how satisfying the big payoff in the end would be. Pretty addictive stuff!
Excellent post. I started watching GH only after OLTL was cancelled, and only because Michael Easton made the move to GH along with Frank and Ron. But since he ceased being John McBain and became Silas Clay, they never gave him a decent plot line. Nonetheless, I’ve enjoyed the show until the past few months, when plot lines have dragged on far too long and far too many characters have been introduced or resurrected from the dead. And how can women who’ve been wives or lovers of the supposedly dead Jason not recognize him through voice or body language? Same goes for Ava as Denise – that Sonny and Morgan wouldn’t recognize her instantly is just preposterous. The plot lines insult viewers’ intelligence.
Just bring Steve back and the ratings will go through the roof. Keep Billy too, as Jake. But Steve is Jason.
Steve is a wooden soldier!
Maybe RC can get a modern soap opera writing job. I am sure he would get a huge following…even some former GH viewers would join in. In my opinion, he made the traditional GH unrecognizable. He got new fans to watch, but many long time viewers, like me, couldn’t handle the new feel of GH.
He wont be unemployed for long, there is a market for his style of wrting. I havent watched my favorite soap in quite a while, but i will be keeping an eye on the soap mags to see if i should make it my habit again!
Not surprised…The debacle of the FLUKE story…too many characters that are underused or not seen for months…stories that go no where….no character and relationship development at all. With TG exit, timing seems just right to me.
I don’t feel bad for him. I’m sure he’ll wind up somewhere…he’s got the credentials.
Being a OLTL fan and really disappointed when it was canned, I was beyond thrilled when he came over to GH…and brought Roger, Michael and Kristen. And…had high hopes when he brought in so many of the legacy characters. And then he killed off AJ and Duke. Made Mac inconsequential and nowhere to be found, brought back Felicia for no reason and then made us forget she was ever there…had Tracy walking the Q mansion alone for the longest time because no one was left, dropped the ball with Ned/Wally Kurth…
GH is a fun show. At times a great show. It just doesn’t bare much resemblance to itself. I’m not sure if replacing him’s a great idea…time will tell.
But do I feel bad for him? About as bad as he felt when he blocked fans he didn’t like…or publicly dissed Sean Kanan after refusing to hear him out regarding AJ’s direction…which ultimateltpy left to SK leaving and AJ dying. Funny how those in higher up positions think nothing of eliminating actors…and think /themselves untouchable.
I”ve never been a fan of writers who revise history, deconstruct characters , and write plot diriven and dragged out storylines. I am an inveterate fan of all the ABC soaps which I started watching with my Mother when they first aired, stayed loyal to only the ABC sudsers because they were independently so uniquie. They all had something different to offer because the writers were stupendous and pioneered new ideas in each and every one of them. Then the established quality writing ensembles moved on and one day ABC brought on a head writer named Megan McTavish, It was she who systematically destroyed AMC, OLTL, GH’- She got fired from AMC, rehired on and then fired from OLTL and the same for GH. The damage she did and havoc she wreaked on those shows (history, characgter integrity etal) was irreparable- they never, ever recovered.
When RC and FV came aboard I was not hopeful because I had my experience with them on OLTL, but I tried to stay optimistic. The first 4 or 5 months of Gh under their orchestration seemed promising because they tied up some dragged out stories expediently and told a few new ones with reveals made quickly and well timed, and what ever integrity the characters still had was left intact,- I also liked that some core characters past were brought on screen again. Unfortunately the honeymoon didn’t last too long.
However, I do wish Ron C well in his future endeavors. I believe he came to GH with the intention and vision of saving it from cancellation. He did the best he could within his capability as a writer.
When the new writer’s come in I hope one of the first things they do is:
de-Franco, Franco. Please give Roger Howarth a meaningful character. He is too good of an actor to be turned into a joke.
Second: Billy Miller (Jake/Jason). He’s another talented actor whose talents are being wasted. Please fix him by November sweeps. Let Spinelli figure it out. His character will save the writers a lot of time. He knows Jason very well. Besides that, it’s time to move on with this storyline.
Jean and Shelly were fired from the #1 soap Y&R because they killin it..
The rating had fallen lower than ever before..
Their stories went on forever and to this day 2 still have not come to closure.
2014 Y&R was a total snore, very lackluster..
Now- GH has them.. GH brought in Y&R fired throw aways, the 2 that brought Y&R down to its lowest ratings (putting the viewers to sleep )
be careful what you wish for;
Consider the implications. We think we know what we want, but we can never really know until we’ve got it. And sometimes when we have, we discover we never really wanted it in the first place – but then it’s too late… umhum ..
This is great news for GH. Good for them hiring the writers that were on Y&R before nightmare Pratt came on. I actually watched Y&R when their stories were on but not since Pratt took over.
But I wouldn’t be surprised if Days picks Carlivati once they need a new head writer one day.
Days picking up Carlivati as head writer someday would be the kiss of death.
Yeah, things are a hot mess these days and I watch GH on computer and flip to other web sites during anything with dante & lulu, sonny and carly, michael and sabrina, maxie and nathan (and I am sure there are other characters I can’t even remember).
and….Monica, Tracy, Alexis, Bobbie, Elizabeth (and more recently Laura) have had better scenes than they ever did under the previous regime. There have been some great actors brought on –Liesel, Maura West, Billy Miller, Michelle Stafford (and she and Roger Howath had some lovely scenes in the mental hospital before this latest mess with ric. They have all had their moments (and are certainly more interesting than the sonny-jason show.) And if only Maurice Bernard had left the show (even for a few years)–than Sonny would finally have had some consequences for his actions (michael punishing him had hope–wonder if the powers that be nixed that once Bernard resigned).
Its been a mixed bag, but it has not been all mob all the time and women of a certain age have had their best turns in ages. Parts of his work will be missed. And if the new old writers have had an influence the last few months then I really can’t say I am looking forward to the transition, because other than the Luke, Laura, Lucky, Jake, elizabeth (actually I like evil nic) threads everyone else is extraordinarly boring
Note to Ron— now that you got some free time on your hands have you ever consider creating your own soap– for network or the web??? I know you love the genre, and as the creator and producer of your own “baby” you can tell the stories you want and create the characters you want to create without having to “honor” 52 years of history. I just would really, really, love to see fresh material out there– Think about Ron– this soap fans like to see new soaps being made and I think you are the man that could do it–
It’s sad when anyone loses his job.
Overall, I liked Ron’s work on OLTL better than his work here. On GH, the stories go on and on, with little actual payoff. The Fluke story was not his fault. It would have been next to impossible to continue that story without Mr. Geary. But the Ava/Denise thing is simply annoying now. Give her a real reason to keep up the masquerade or resolve it. Do something with Robin. Or write her out permanently. Move the Jason story along. This is simply repetitive. Do something, anything with Kiki. The character has no purpose. Give her own. Or send her off to visit Sarah Webber.
And, sorry, Mr. Geary, you didn’t win eight Emmys singlehandedly. The writers and directors helped shape your performance. It wouldn’t hurt to be a little more gracious.
I hope the new writers reboot the show and delete all this crap we have had shoved down our throats. Who would miss Nina, Franco, Denise. Morgan, Kiki, Valerie or Sabrina? Rebuild the Q’s and focus on the hospital.
Have watched this show for too many years to even count now and in my opinion this show has become a complete disaster. Never-ending dragged out stories, too many cast members to care about, beloved actors leaving. Is there even one couple you want to see together or care about, family units gone, split up, barely on screen. Not sure who is responsible but let’s hope the fix comes sooner than later.
:):):):):)!!!!
I’m so sad to learn that Ron has been fired… As a life-long CBS viewer, I was crushed when Guiding Light and then As The World Turns were cancelled. I didn’t really want to risk getting to know a new set of characters, but, on one afternoon, I turned on OLTL, and I loved it– only to be crushed once again when it got cancelled as well. When Ron and Frank took over GH, I resolved to give it a try, and I’m so glad that I did. No, as a new viewer, I can’t compare GH to what it had been before they joined the team. From what I have read, I think that some GH fans resented even the hint of OLTL from the beginning of Frank and Ron’s tenure, and that resentment may have flavored some viewers’ reactions to their work. I wonder how those GH fans would have reacted if GH had been cancelled and a few of its characters would have had a chance to move to Llanview… As a OLTL fan, it helped me to heal and provided me with a tiny bit of familiarity as I transitioned to Port Charles. Anyway, I have appreciated how much genuine affection that this team has for the genre and for GH. They brought back the Nurses’ Ball as well as several beloved characters, and their anniversary episodes were just phenomenal, especially this year’s (which gave great “pay off” for the lengthy “Fluke” storyline– lengthy, due in large part to a health situation beyond their control). I’ll miss Ron’s creative, attentive writing. Some other fans have complained about stories not having a beginning, middle, and end. Well, in a genre that has spanned nearly a century and with a show that has been around for nearly half of that time, it makes sense for stories to intertwine with others and for them to not be clearly and neatly resolved in a short few months, especially given that dedicated fans allow characters into our hearts and lives for the long haul as we tune in day after day after day. I’ve appreciated the broad story arcs, the clever and quirky characters, and the integration of an array of Port Charles residents that acknowledges and even highlights a beautifully multi-generational community of cute and talented youngsters (Spencer and Emma!) to mature adults in fun and romantic relationships (Alexis and Julian!) to families experiencing joy, crisis, and heartache. I just hope that GH continues and thrives for a long time to come. I’ve suffered the loss of three soaps now, and I don’t ever want to go through it again. Even when I might want for “things” to go differently or even faster, I’ve learned to be grateful for the opportunity to visit Port Charles at all, given that we can no longer see what’s up with the residents of Springfield, Oakdale, or Llanview. Wishing Ron and GH all of the best!!
Christie – I also started watching GH after the demise of OLTL. I was a long time CBS watcher. GH was captivating. I loved the adventure and comedy that RC brought as compared to the snooze fest and incest at CBS.
Mr. Geary is a pre-Madonna and a big baby. It sounds like he placed big demands on the writers. There wasn’t anything the writers could do given his back surgery. I really enjoyed the blk/white finale. Many wanted LnL to walk off into the sunset but with TG was leaving and Laura staying, this would have been impossible.
Sean Kanan is another big baby. He was complaining about the direction of his character. That is ridiculous. In real life, a character like AJ would never change.
I don’t think they should have killed AJ and Duke. I stopped regularly watching Y&R after they killed Delia. My mother stopped watching OLTL when they killed Vicki’s sister, Meredith. I personally don’t agree with killing of long time characters. RC came in and righted the wrong of the killing of little Jake and Robin. There isn’t anything the writers can do, if KM is directing; JJ is on Nashville, Noah Drake is on True Detective; John Stamos wanted too much $; etc. I love MStafford, RHowarth and MWest.
I will miss RC and want to thank him for 3 years of great entertainment! I thoroughly enjoyed GH under his tenure. I know there are a lot of English majors on the site. However, IMO – I am a math/computer science major, who found GH extremely entertaining!
Who are these people trying to fool? No one with any common sense is unhappy to see Ron Carlivati go. Everyone know that Ron Carlivati made a horrible mess of GH. First the Levi Dunkleman/Peter Harrel Jr nonsense. Then there was the awful Luke Spencer/Fluke (Anthony Geary) story line. Worst of all is the resurrection of Jake Spencer. Didn’t Elizabeth donate little Jake’s organs? So now because Jake has been brought back to life the new writers will have to do some major rewriting of GH history. And I for one am still angry about the way this man wrote A.J. Quartermaine into oblivion. No wonder Tony Geary threw that man under the bus in an exit interview.
I want these new writers to undo some of the mess that Carlivati created. Enough with the constant back and forth with Carly and Sonny. Put Tracy Quartermaine on the front burner; let her be a major threat once again. And put Sonny and Tracy together. Also put Dr Obrecht back on the front burner as well. It’s time to deal with the identity of Nathan’s father. Then bring back Anders Hove (Faison). Then GH might be worth watching again.

Maurice Benard Gives High Praise to ‘General Hospital’ Writers; Teases Upcoming Sonny Scenes with Anna, Jason, Justine and Ric

With the highly-anticipated returns of Finola Hughes (Anna Devane) on this week’s June 24 episode of General Hospital, Steve Burton’s (Jason Morgan) upcoming return on July 13, which also serves as the ABC daytime drama’s 16,000 episode, things are about to fire on all cylinders in the story, as noted today by series star, Maurice Benard (Sonny Corinthos).
On Father’s Day, the three-time Daytime Emmy-winning actor and mental health activist took to his Instagram and expressed in a video that he has some unbelievable upcoming senes with the aforementioned Burton and Hughes. Add to that Nazneen Contractor (Justine Turner) and Rick Hearst (Ric Lansing), where Benard gave credit where credit is due to the GH writing team, which is led by co-head writers, Elizabeth Korte and Chris Van Etten..
In this video, Benard said, “I just want to get on here and say that I did some work with Steve Burton, Finola Hughes, Rick Hearst, Nazneen Contractor, and they’re all just fantastic. Truly fantastic. But, I want to say the writing was just exceptional. It truly was. It was exceptional. So, thankful for that kind of writing. I know writers don’t get the credit a lot, but I just want to say to the General Hospital writing team, keep rolling!”
GENERAL HOSPITAL PREVIEW
So now the question becomes, with a major tease like that, what is about to go down between Sonny, Anna, Jason, Justine and Ric? Will we finally get to the end of the line for Sidwell (Carlo Rota), as previously teased by the GH co-head writers? Will we learn what happened to Jason and Anna, fully? Will Justine and Sonny becomes closer or stop their liaisons? And what of Ric? Will he be true blue to his brother or double-cross him? There is a lot at stake as we move further into the summer and one that looks like it could be one of the more exciting ones in years!
FINOLA HUGHES CONFIRMED AMAZING SCENES WITH MAURICE BENARD
As a punctuation point to his video, Benard also shared this written message in the post: “I just did some wonderful scenes with Steve Burton, Rick Hearst, Finola Hughes and Nazneen Contractor and and unbelievable writing, freaking amazing scenes that you will see in the near future on General Hospital.” In fact, Finola Hughes jumped in the post comment thread and responded, “I loved our scenes so much xxx”
Fans will most likely see all the scenes Benard referred to later in July, since GH tapes approximately six weeks ahead of air.
So, are you excited to see what Maurice is talking about? Are you hyped for what’s to come on GH? Any clue on what you think will go down between the main characters on the soap with the returns of Anna Devane and Jason Morgan to the mix? Weigh-in via the comment section below.

SINCE LEAVING GENERAL HOSPITAL
Previously, since his departure from the ABC soap opera. Chad starred alongside Zach Mendez in the world premiere of of Yum Yum at Annapolis, a new play written by Bruce Reisman. Duell last appeared on General Hospital on the January 21, 2025 episode.
The part was recast with Rory Gibson who debuted as the new Michael in May of 2025 during the Nurses’ Ball episodes and who has remained in the role since that time.
In an interview earlier this year on The Able Show, Duell said on his decision to exit the soap opera, “I was blessed to be part of that (show) for as long as I have, but what happens sometimes is if you’re doing the same thing, especially in a creative field for such a long time, you can get a little burnt out in a way. It can make you a little depressed, so that’s kind of what happened. On top of that, I had other things going on in my life at the time. My father passed away recently and I just needed a reset. So, I stepped away. A lot of times you have to go through some stuff to really step into that next level. I needed to kind of feel uncomfortable.”
So, what type of musical genre will Chad’s new song be? Country? Pop? Rock? Dance/Club? Something else? Let us know your thoughts via the comment section below, and if you are eager to hear the new single next week via the comment section below.
