Many General Hospital stars have shared their sentiments  and “thank you’s” publicly on Twitter over the last 24 hours for the exiting head writer of General Hospital, Ron Carlivati.

Yesterday, news broke that Carlivati had been let-go of his duties by ABC executives as head writer of GH, in favor of the co-head writing duo of Shelly Altman and Jean Passanante, who would begin in the position as of August 10th.  Here are a few of the tweets that have sprouted up on social media since news of Carlivati’s departure with more expected in the days ahead:

Michelle Stafford wrote:  “I want to thank the brilliant @carlivatiron for creating this amazing character I have the great fortune of playing everyday on #GH !!!”

Parry Shen (Brad Cooper) shared: “TY @carlivatiron for the chance to showcase stuff I never got to do in my 18yr career & the challenge to do stuff I didn’t know I could do.”

Kathleen Gati  (Liesl) tweeted:  “Thank you @carlivatiron for the evil, the crazy, the tears, the quirky, the song and dance… and all the other faces of Dr. Obrecht!! XOXO”

Laura Wright (Carly) stated: “Thank you @carlivatiron for your words- filled with heart and laughter.  Thank you for your hard work and enthusiasm XOXO!!”

Jean Passanante (New co-head writer) paid an homage to Carlivati’s work tweeting:  “Thank you, well-wishing fans. And thanks @carlivatiron for the moving, hilarious, romantic, suspenseful, nutty things you brought to #GH.”

Nancy Lee Grahn (Alexis) made a more general statement in regards to anyone having the arduous task of writing a soap day in and day out: “Being headwriter of soap is inarguably hardest writing job in TV bar none.”

Jackie Zeman (Bobbie) “@carlivatiron Enjoy this time off as I’m sure u will be stepping into something new soon. Best wishes 2 u always. Happy thoughts #GH”

What do you think of the sentiments shared by member of the GH cast in support of the work he has done and accomplished while at GH with their characters and his creativity?  Share your thoughts in the comment section below!

Lets never forget he was brought in and had minimal time to save GH from cancellation in 2012. Along with Valentini, they did. Since their takeover , never missed an episode until last September. Something happened where Imy interest was not maintained. I believe carlivati does extremely well under pressure( OLTL’s last year was awesome and his first year at GH was great)because both soaps had cancellation rumors running rampant at that time. I love most of characters , but how do you writ thoroughly and accurately for50+ ( total, not age) characters. The show has difficulty with focus at… Read more »

At the time ABC had to make a decision for the Fall 2012 schedule, when GH was renewed, April 2012, the ratings were actually worse than Guza, only at 2,250,000 total viewers and worse in demos. The Revolution was just much worse and then GMA afternoon was horrid. ABC had nothing to fill the slot and couldn’t come up with anything else.

Yes, over time and for a period, ratings improved, but they didn’t save it. That was not the timing or the situation.

Harry

The rating initially rose because OLTL and AMC fans wanted to give GH a chance after their aforementioned soaps were canceled.
I need to stress again that Ron did not save GH from cancellation.

I totally agree with AJQ.

If either alternatives had done better in the ratings than General Hospital, it would have been gone in 2012. This doesn’t negate what Ron and Frank accomplished because they had a huge task.

I still don’t put it passed ABC that they want a cheaper alternative and it’s just a matter of time.

Fans and viewers should do their best to enjoy GH while it is still on.

I’m conflicted about his firing On one hand I never want someone to lose their job-it’s a tough economy & whereas I’m sure he was paid handsomely he now has nothing coming in by way of income. BUT On the other hand his vision-his writing has the show a mess. Long time vets are now day players to the never ending cycle of his “pets” Ava, Nina, Franco just to name a few. Stories he himself took time to build yield no payoff to their fans. I think it’s nice the actors thanked him, but I’m not sure it’s 100%… Read more »

I’ll preface my comments by saying I really liked RC’s work & wish he were staying. But, these dismissals rarely come without warning. I’m sure he’s been receiving feedback on what ABC wants to see from GH for some time. It’s his, & FV’s, responsibility to respond to that. If anything, what is apparent to me from past comments by GH’s actors, is that GH may be too actor-friendly, which is why the stories are so disjointed. GH actors won Emmys because the writing has been geared to giving them meaty scenes they can sink their teeth into. But, once… Read more »

Tony Geary has shown himself to be an egomaniac. His backstabbing comments as he left GH were disgusting. I think he diminished himself as a vindictive jerk. Ron Carlivati helped save GH from cancellation. ABC was going to wipe it out, like AMC and OLTL. No class.

RC was not the first HW to have to deal with Tony Geary’s histrionics, story writing and extended vacations. He was one in a long line of them, they can thank Frons and Valentini for agreeing to that crap and assuming the soap couldn’t survive without him. Garbage!!! Write decent well constructed and paced stories, don’t trash your legacy familys and characters and people watch

I’m with you, June … never understood the allure and fascination with Geary despite his eight shiny trophies. No show should be “built” around a tent-pole character (…that mentality went out in the 1950’s with SFT’s “Jo”?!) It’s always baffled me why some shows parade one character/actor front-and-center, almost stuffing them down viewers’ throats while the ensemble are just expected to ‘support’ their long overdue reign in the sun: this goes for AMC’s Lucci, OLTL’s Slezak, GL’s Zimmer, B&B’s Flannery and (esp.) Y&R’s Braeden. I tune-in for the ensemble, not “The Luke Spencer Show”, and personally, I’m glad ABC is… Read more »

Harry

It’s not exactly backstabbing when you make disparaging comments about a person in an interview which you know will be seen by that person.
Geary was honest and not overly critical at all. He merely said he did not care for some of Ron’s writing and that Ron never once spoke to him.

TVGurl

That was a lie. It was confirmed by other people in the industry that Tony talked to Ron several times. Tony also sang the praises of the writing team after the anniversary episode. Tony decided the direction of his exit storyline and gave them a short period in which to do it. He didn’t like Ron’s execution of HIS story. Who cares what he thinks? He’s gone anyway. They should’ve let Tony go two years ago, then they could’ve done the show they wanted without Tony’s rewrites.

KansasGuest

@TVGurl – Tony Geary, IMO, has been very even-handed in his praise & criticism. In the past, he has said he liked what RC wrote for Fluke, & admitted that his health problems definitely affected the story arc & appreciated all the accommodations GH made for him. He liked the anniversary show, and all the scenes w/Laura, Lucky, Holly, & Ethan. But, like many fans, he felt adding Frank & Jennifer Smith was unnecessary, and resurrecting Jake was ridiculous. I don’t get how so many people can have a beef with him when his criticisms are basically the same ones… Read more »

I enjoyed Ron’s writing on General Hospital as well as for One Life to Live. I just disagreed that he was fired. General Hospital’s time has been bounced around from 2pm Cental and 1pm Central. In my area it is pitted against “Days of our Lives.” It is too bad that every soap has to compete against each other for what little soaps are currently on television. I thought Ron’s writing was wonderful and I for one am sorry that he was fired. Best of luck to what project he will be going onto next.

My point is that he was a part that saved General Hospital. It was a huge shock that April when it was announced that both AMC and OLTL were to be terminated. He brought so much history back to GH. As for you analogy of “more holes than Sponge Bob”, I disagree! Please give examples. The scenes with Nina, Ric and Madeleine are amazing!! Ric is so evil. He lost Liz. He is greedy! I could name other scenes. The man just lost his job!!!

Frank Valentini is Executive Producer of GH. Ron Carlivati was Head Writer. But FV still has to answer to ABC executives. I’m guessing FV is on borrowed time, being given one last chance to raise ratings, and he was told someone, or both of them, had to go. Really, would you fire yourself?

Can’t say I was all that surprised, Mo. Storm clouds seem to have been brewing for awhile now. The minute Jean Passanate was hired I was convinced she was slated to be transitioned from co-headwriter to HW. I didn’t expect RC to be given the boot so abruptly but the handwriting was on the wall. No clue what happened behind the scenes but I doubt it was just one thing. There’s still a lawsuit out there between Prospect Park & ABC. Talk about hanging storyline. Will that thing ever get resolved? I think PP continues to own the rights to AMC & OLTL. I have watched GH since I was a little girl alongside my Mom. Sometime the stories got somewhat boring or dragged on too long. But on the whole I find it very entertaining. I do think when they are creating a story they should give more time to the actors playing their part. Things get lost if you see them for a day or two then dont see them again for a week or two. So most fans think that Ron had the power to push these story lines forward without the blessing of daytime tv heads and Frank Valentini? Ron was the scapegoat, Frank should have been fired too because he has creative control over GH. Ms. Drummer at ABC who oversees GH is Frank’s boss and could have reigned them both in. The ratings had been falling for weeks now.

The comments are by persons who owe their GH “careers” to RC. Nancy’s comment says nothing about RC. JZ was, appropriately, generous because RC brought her back. These others? Characters that add nothing, whose presence has not been exceptionally helpful to the GH brand. When I see comments from the likes of Jane Elliot, Finola Hughes, Maurice Benard, Jason Thompson, KeMo, Laura Wright, Becky Herbst…then I’ll take this seriously. Otherwise, meh comments from meh persons who are by no stretch the “real” GH (JZ aside, and hers are special circumstances).

I stand corrected on Laura wright. However, RC ruined Carley by hooking her up with Franco. But…he did create Lena Spencer for her, and those short turns as the Spencer mom were LAURA’s best of the year, imo. So, given what he gave her as Lena, a “thank you” is in order. The other folk tweeting? As I said, meh characters who all (with the exception of JZ) owe their existence to RC. It would ungenerous of these folks NOT to thank him.

There needs to be a hospital! Get the main families back in order. I was surprised I liked Valerie more with Bobbie than hanging around with Lulu and Dante. That Lulu is a twit. Ron did some great stuff and some not so great stuff but I always got the impression he was impassioned and cared about what he was doing which was a godsend afte the guza/jill mess which was thoughtless and sexist trash. Ron was a breath of fresh air. but theres been misses…I think the jasons stuff could have been done a little better, lukes exit hasn’t been great aside from lucky scenes but then again the anniversary show was wonderful. Ava and Nina and franco have been winning additions. Alexis… Read more »

I think RC was a great writer the stories are great. The pacing is off. There are sooooooo many characters that you never really get a chance to get involved. Then it took a year to figure out Fluke, a year for Jason to be Jason, and a few weeks for Valerie to sleep with Dante. Plus there are a few substandard actors who seem to be on every day but that’s casting not writing. I hope the new writers keep going in the same direction but streamline so we get more bang for our buck and Jason finds out… Read more »

Well I have been watching the show on and off for 30 yrs and Ron is the worst writer they ever had.He turned it into a joke and brought on bad actors from OLTL to replace the great actors from GH.Glad he was fired.

My observations as a longtime viewer of both OLTL and GH are that Ron C. writes plot-driven stories rather than character-driven stories. He does this at least 75-80% of the time. Is it all him, or does the network interfere with his vision? I’d guess that he has had orders from the network suits at least some of the time, but I can’t blame everything on that. Some of it has to be him. In soap opera especially, writing stories that focus on plot and “forcing” the characters to do things that serve the intended plot, despite the fact that… Read more »

Very good post, I concur. We women (the target audience) want to get to know the characters, watch them interacting in relationships with each other, especially love stories, we don’t care so much about the plot, lol. It’s the CHARACTERS that keep us tuning in. They become like old friends. You are so right about payoff. I had high hopes for RC because I saw all the payoff he was giving the characters, WEDDINGS for characters like Tina&Cord, Gigi&Rex, and I just know if it weren’t for Prospect Park, there would have been a lot more. All this proved to… Read more »

Your comments about the lack of payoffs is dead on. Perfect example is the “sticky door” era back in the early 80’s. Even though it seemed to take forever for LnL to reunite, we hung in there week after week because all the little payoffs along the way hinted at how satisfying the big payoff in the end would be. Pretty addictive stuff!

Excellent post. I started watching GH only after OLTL was cancelled, and only because Michael Easton made the move to GH along with Frank and Ron. But since he ceased being John McBain and became Silas Clay, they never gave him a decent plot line. Nonetheless, I’ve enjoyed the show until the past few months, when plot lines have dragged on far too long and far too many characters have been introduced or resurrected from the dead. And how can women who’ve been wives or lovers of the supposedly dead Jason not recognize him through voice or body language? Same… Read more »

Just bring Steve back and the ratings will go through the roof. Keep Billy too, as Jake. But Steve is Jason.

Maybe RC can get a modern soap opera writing job. I am sure he would get a huge following…even some former GH viewers would join in. In my opinion, he made the traditional GH unrecognizable. He got new fans to watch, but many long time viewers, like me, couldn’t handle the new feel of GH. He wont be unemployed for long, there is a market for his style of wrting. I havent watched my favorite soap in quite a while, but i will be keeping an eye on the soap mags to see if i should make it my habit… Read more »

Not surprised…The debacle of the FLUKE story…too many characters that are underused or not seen for months…stories that go no where….no character and relationship development at all. With TG exit, timing seems just right to me.

I don’t feel bad for him. I’m sure he’ll wind up somewhere…he’s got the credentials. Being a OLTL fan and really disappointed when it was canned, I was beyond thrilled when he came over to GH…and brought Roger, Michael and Kristen. And…had high hopes when he brought in so many of the legacy characters. And then he killed off AJ and Duke. Made Mac inconsequential and nowhere to be found, brought back Felicia for no reason and then made us forget she was ever there…had Tracy walking the Q mansion alone for the longest time because no one was left,… Read more »

I”ve never been a fan of writers who revise history, deconstruct characters , and write plot diriven and dragged out storylines. I am an inveterate fan of all the ABC soaps which I started watching with my Mother when they first aired, stayed loyal to only the ABC sudsers because they were independently so uniquie. They all had something different to offer because the writers were stupendous and pioneered new ideas in each and every one of them. Then the established quality writing ensembles moved on and one day ABC brought on a head writer named Megan McTavish, It was she… Read more »

When the new writer’s come in I hope one of the first things they do is:
de-Franco, Franco. Please give Roger Howarth a meaningful character. He is too good of an actor to be turned into a joke.

Second: Billy Miller (Jake/Jason). He’s another talented actor whose talents are being wasted. Please fix him by November sweeps. Let Spinelli figure it out. His character will save the writers a lot of time. He knows Jason very well. Besides that, it’s time to move on with this storyline.

Jean and Shelly were fired from the #1 soap Y&R because they killin it.. The rating had fallen lower than ever before.. Their stories went on forever and to this day 2 still have not come to closure. 2014 Y&R was a total snore, very lackluster.. Now- GH has them.. GH brought in Y&R fired throw aways, the 2 that brought Y&R down to its lowest ratings (putting the viewers to sleep ) be careful what you wish for; Consider the implications. We think we know what we want, but we can never really know until we’ve got it. And… Read more »

This is great news for GH. Good for them hiring the writers that were on Y&R before nightmare Pratt came on. I actually watched Y&R when their stories were on but not since Pratt took over.

Yeah, things are a hot mess these days and I watch GH on computer and flip to other web sites during anything with dante & lulu, sonny and carly, michael and sabrina, maxie and nathan (and I am sure there are other characters I can’t even remember). and….Monica, Tracy, Alexis, Bobbie, Elizabeth (and more recently Laura) have had better scenes than they ever did under the previous regime. There have been some great actors brought on –Liesel, Maura West, Billy Miller, Michelle Stafford (and she and Roger Howath had some lovely scenes in the mental hospital before this latest mess… Read more »

Note to Ron— now that you got some free time on your hands have you ever consider creating your own soap– for network or the web??? I know you love the genre, and as the creator and producer of your own “baby” you can tell the stories you want and create the characters you want to create without having to “honor” 52 years of history. I just would really, really, love to see fresh material out there– Think about Ron– this soap fans like to see new soaps being made and I think you are the man that could do… Read more »

It’s sad when anyone loses his job. Overall, I liked Ron’s work on OLTL better than his work here. On GH, the stories go on and on, with little actual payoff. The Fluke story was not his fault. It would have been next to impossible to continue that story without Mr. Geary. But the Ava/Denise thing is simply annoying now. Give her a real reason to keep up the masquerade or resolve it. Do something with Robin. Or write her out permanently. Move the Jason story along. This is simply repetitive. Do something, anything with Kiki. The character has no… Read more »

I hope the new writers reboot the show and delete all this crap we have had shoved down our throats. Who would miss Nina, Franco, Denise. Morgan, Kiki, Valerie or Sabrina? Rebuild the Q’s and focus on the hospital.

Have watched this show for too many years to even count now and in my opinion this show has become a complete disaster. Never-ending dragged out stories, too many cast members to care about, beloved actors leaving. Is there even one couple you want to see together or care about, family units gone, split up, barely on screen. Not sure who is responsible but let’s hope the fix comes sooner than later.

I’m so sad to learn that Ron has been fired… As a life-long CBS viewer, I was crushed when Guiding Light and then As The World Turns were cancelled. I didn’t really want to risk getting to know a new set of characters, but, on one afternoon, I turned on OLTL, and I loved it– only to be crushed once again when it got cancelled as well. When Ron and Frank took over GH, I resolved to give it a try, and I’m so glad that I did. No, as a new viewer, I can’t compare GH to what it… Read more »

Christie – I also started watching GH after the demise of OLTL. I was a long time CBS watcher. GH was captivating. I loved the adventure and comedy that RC brought as compared to the snooze fest and incest at CBS. Mr. Geary is a pre-Madonna and a big baby. It sounds like he placed big demands on the writers. There wasn’t anything the writers could do given his back surgery. I really enjoyed the blk/white finale. Many wanted LnL to walk off into the sunset but with TG was leaving and Laura staying, this would have been impossible. Sean… Read more »

Who are these people trying to fool? No one with any common sense is unhappy to see Ron Carlivati go. Everyone know that Ron Carlivati made a horrible mess of GH. First the Levi Dunkleman/Peter Harrel Jr nonsense. Then there was the awful Luke Spencer/Fluke (Anthony Geary) story line. Worst of all is the resurrection of Jake Spencer. Didn’t Elizabeth donate little Jake’s organs? So now because Jake has been brought back to life the new writers will have to do some major rewriting of GH history. And I for one am still angry about the way this man wrote… Read more »

Walt Willey Brings All My Children’s Jackson Montgomery to General Hospital

Look for another legal eagle character from a former ABC soap opera to pop up on General Hospital!

News today out of Soap Opera Digest has that none other than Walt Willey set to reprise his role as All My Children’s Jackson Montgomery on upcoming episodes of GH in July.

Willey played Erica Kane’s (Susan Lucci) love interest and the Pine Valley lawyer from 1987 through to till ABC’s cancellation of the series back in 2011.  The actor previously crossed-over to another soap opera in 1996, when he played Jack on ABC’s The City.

Taking to his Facebook account, Walt confirmed the news on his appearances on GH: “Hey Folks… Been sitting on this one for a while but now I’ve been given the clearance to announce that “Jackson Montgomery” is visiting Port Charles! I’ll be doing a few episodes of General Hospital, due to air mid July. So excited to reprise my character and see and work with old friends! I’ll keep you posted on any details. “Jackson” in Port Charles…who would have thought it? Let me, and ABC, know what you think about it!”

Could Jack’s sudden arrival in Port Charles have to do with the SEC and the trouble that Carly (Laura Wright) and Drew (Cameron Mathison) find themselves in?   Will AMC fans get to see Cameron Mathison and Willey share scenes together again?  Mathison played Ryan Lavery on the beloved former soap opera.

So, excited to see Walt on General Hospital? What do you think brings Jack to Port Charles? Weigh-in below and stay tuned.

B&B’s Scott Clifton Reflects On His Conflicted Emotions on Winning Lead Actor Daytime Emmy Over Y&R’s Kristoff St. John

The Young and the Restless’ beloved Kristoff St. John (ex-Neil Winters) passed away back in February of 2019, and at the age of 52-years-old.  Back in 2017, St. John along with The Bold and the Beautiful’s Scott Clifton (Liam), were nominated alongside each other for the Lead Actor in a Drama Series category at the 44th annual Daytime Emmy Awards.

A win for either would put them in the Emmy record books to become the only actor to win all three of the Daytime Emmy acting categories as of that time: Outstanding Younger Actor, Outstanding Supporting Actor and Lead Actor.

During his appearance on Maurice Benard’s You Tube series, State of Mind, Clifton talked about the emotions and ups and downs of eventually winning the Emmy over St. John, while knowing how much it meant to Kristoff, and given late actor’s reel. In it, St. John shared scenes with the late Nichelle Nichols, who played Neil’s dying mother.

When discussing his three Emmy wins with Benard, Scott expressed: “It’s beautiful, but remember Kristoff St. John.  I got to do a couple of events with him, and I got to talk with him, and the year that I got ‘Lead’, he was nominated.  He and I both had a Younger Actor Emmy and a Supporting Actor Emmy, and if one of us won, everybody was telling us, we would have this record of the first actor in daytime to have a Daytime Emmy in all three categories.  And, he told me, and this was months before he passed away, he told me, it was really important to him to win that.”  It was then, an emotional Clifton shared: “That Emmy is not worth it to me. It’s bittersweet.”

Photo: NATAS

As to how Scott feels he wound up with the gold statuette, the B&B star acknowledged, “So much of that it is who happened to be submitting that year, etc, and this was the first year they changed the rules. All I did was take advantage of the new rules, and I was smart about it.  I did not have the best performance, but they changed the rules where instead of submitting one episode through the year, you could submit a 20-minute tape and you could grab (scenes) from whatever episodes, and I made a story with it. I was playing the voters, but I didn’t have the best performance.”

In tribute to St. John, Clifton said, “His performance  was beautiful, but it was all in a hospital.  It was so intimate and small, and controlled and authentic, and mine was all over the place, but I told a story.  I’m convinced that’s the only reason I won.”

Scott’s reel that year was also outstanding, so many could see why he won the coveted prize and made Emmy history.

Check out the poignant story as told by Scott to Maurice in the latest episode of State of Mind below.

Then, let us know what you thought about Scott opening up on of his career-defining moments via the comment section below.

General Hospital’s Réal Andrews and Finola Hughes Deliver the ‘Power Performances of the Week’

Two different storylines, two noteworthy performances, and both from General Hospital, made our weekly kudofest.  The first, belongs to the heartbreaking performance that still has everyone talking by Réal Andrews as Marcus Taggert.

Last week’s episodes of GH, brought with it the results of the DNA test that ‘proves’ just who is Trina’s (Tabyana Ali) biological father, Taggert or Curtis (Donnell Turner)? When Trina opened the envelope to reveal the answer in front of Portia, Curtis and Taggert, she announced it was Curtis, who was her dad.

However, if you watched the scenes carefully, you saw the subtle work by Andrews as he was attempting to remain calm before receiving the answer and what followed afterwards, but that was in front of Trina, Portia and Curtis and his attempt to put on a brave face through it all.  In reality, Taggert was devastated by the news.  When he said his goodbyes, Taggert got inside the GH elevator.  Once there, he lost it and began to cry, punching the elevators walls with his fist.  A five-hank

Meanwhile, Finola Hughes once again showed us the layers and the veracity of Anna Devane. This time, while at WSB headquarters, Anna’s past as a double agent comes to light.  Agent Hersley had her under arrest, as she is being accused of treason against the state.

Courtesy/ABC

While Anna’s past as a DBX double agent were known to the agency, they weren’t known to the public. Thanks to Victor’s will reading and the revenge plot he set in motion against her, now Anna is up against more formidable foes.  When speaking with her lawyer, Martin Grey (Michael E. Knight), Anna says how can she dispute the charges against her when they are true?  She realizes in this instant that the WSB wants to hang her out to dry to cover their own asses.  Hersley threatens Anna, that if she fights the charges, they will be forced into looking into the actions of her associates, Robert Scorpio and Annie Donnelly.

Not having it, Anna throws down saying she will seriously embarrass the WSB if they pursue this … and if anything happens to Robert, Annie or anyone else she cares about, she will take the bureau down with her.  After Hersley caves, Martin asks Anna what happened. Anna states she is no longer an agent and will never be again.

This material gave the mighty Hughes the material to shine, as Anna went from having the rug pulled out from under her, to fighting back, to now not knowing what her future holds after saving others.

Courtesy/ABC

For all the reasons cited above, Michael Fairman TV names the work of Réal Andrews and Finola Hughes as last week’s ‘Power Performances of the Week”.

Do you agree with our picks of GH’s Réal and Finola? Let us know your thoughts in the comment section below, but first check out some clips from their work below.
