In duel ceremonies currently underway in both Los Angeles and New York, the Writers Guild of America is handing out the 71st annual WGA Awards for excellence in writing in the fields of motion picture and television at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, Calif. and at the Edison Ballroom in New York City.
Already given out and announced was the winner in the Daytime Drama category and the winning writing team was ABCs General Hospital which bested the only other nominees in the category, Days of our Lives.
The team consisting of head writers: Shelly Altman, Christopher Van Etten; Writers: Barbara Bloom, Anna Theresa Cascio, Suzanne Flynn, Charlotte Gibson, Lucky Gold, Kate Hall, Elizabeth Korte, Daniel James O’Connor, Donny Sheldon, Scott Sickles, took home the prestigious honor.
This win for GH marks the fifth win in a row for the ABC series, which make its a record-breaker for the Daytime Drama category at the WGA Awards.

Congratulations to the team from Port Charles and General Hospital on their WGA Award win. So, what do you think of GH besting DAYS? Glad the ABC daytime drama won? Share your thoughts via the comment section below.
Disappointing! Days is far superior!
hey Phill..
You are correct !!!
”Days is far superior!”
GH has been incredible and this award validates the writers! Congrats!
If this had been last year I would have cried foul, but they (GH) have been hitting it out of the park recently so happy! Congratulations to my favorite soap.
hi Cat lee ..
It is from last year..
this year has less than 2 months to judge..
so- you can ”cry foul” 🙂
Since Genie Francis came back, it has improved immensely. I don’t know what the hell they were thinking by letting her go. But the fans screamed loud and long, so they brought her back. Thank God. She is a gem.
Quote;
”Daytime Drama category and the winning writing team was ABCs General Hospital which bested the only other nominees in the category, Days of our Lives.”
^^^ that is so much caca!
No way is GH writing team better than Days, no way.
Who are the judges.. ??
Why are the judges not named, why?
There is something very wrong with that decision.
Looks like a bribe, or a hidden quid pro quo !
It stinks and many can smell the stench..
OK- I needed to voice my opinion, I don’t hold back BWAHAAA!
Again; who are/were the judges, their names and qualifications, and who they represent, please.
You obviously don’t watch GH or you would not question this win. Their groundbreaking Alzheimer’s storyline has been outstanding!
Yes, the Alzheimer’s story line has been just fantastic. And Maurice Benard and Laura Wright have been killing it. Max Gail is amazing; I wish he was staying around!
It deserves it ! GH has been really good this past year si ce Chris van etten joined the head writing team with Shelley altmann. As a long time fans of almost 30 years the only time GH was unwatchable for me was under the helm of of Ron c. Who now writes for Days. GH is in the now with a balance if real life everyday drama mixed with soap camp. There is actually dialogue now, use of the hospital, and it’s history. The past year seen the words and issues if Alzheimer’s, me too movement, transgender, bullying, and so much more. More important GH is GH again and it feels like the show I always loved. If GH isnt your cup of tea then try the Kool aid over at days it’s probably your speed.
I didn’t like what Ron C. did with the Jason character. That’s a big reason Steve Burton left for Y and R, I’m damn sure of that. Didn’t like Sam with Silas or John or the Easton characters. She belongs with Jason. Whether it’s Drew or the real Jason, I’ll take it.
Good luck to Days with Ron! They can keep him. LOL
DAYS has won praise and awards and has seen ratings bumps since Ron took over the writing! I think we will be happy to keep him! Ron wasn’t the issue at GH! I also don’t see much in the line of improvement at GH either!! This serial killer storyline has been ridiculous and gone on way too long! Ditto baby switch! Genie is great and I’m glad she is back, but not enjoying what they have thrown at her so far!
You are welcome to your opinion. I have been watching GH off and on since the ’80s, thanks to all the Luke & Laura frenzy. I have a sister who likes Days, but I could never get into it. Not invested in the characters.
I’m a lifelong GH fan. I LOVE this show & always wish it the best. That being said, I really think Days of Our Lives writing was superior this year. Except for Nathan’s death & the fallout I just don’t see it. Congrats to GH – I will continue to watch everyday.
General Hospital is the best
why sugar coat
NOW if this is indicative of any thing… I posted not that long ago… should @GH want to steal the emmy for best show. that their submission should be
1st epi : the Night Franco was supposed to marry Liz… Mike shows up and he and Liz spend time together.. earthquake ensues… but it’s the sublime Max Gail and Rebecca Herbst that own it
2nd epi : when Nathan dies… hankies Kleenex
so we shall see
I may be a fan
I may be a poster
I may be well past the desired demographic
but my vote for .. most diligent and every day viewer.. of both shows.. inarguably
DAYS or OUR Lives WINS day in and day out
@Frank Valentini , Shelly and Chris… for upwards of 4 years plus… the three of you with help from Jean.. have nosedived this show
that trifecta is all that matters
I watch both shows… and know … as an every day player.. what’s going on
its validation, how Ron C cartoonishly writing style even gets any recognition is beyond me, congrats GH, lets keep it going.
I have watched DOOL since I was a child and only moved to GH when ATWT was cancelled.
When Ron was writing GH, it was great! I had to watch it or risk missing something surprising. I feel the same way now that he’s writing DOOL.
Of late, GH has been so hit-and-miss; stories starting and never completing. It felt as though some PTB lost interest or gave an edict that they move in another direction. Whatever the reason, GH has become very jarring for me to watch. There is very little emotional investment because of the story telling. Wonderful cast and crew, to be sure, but as a whole, the stories have really lacked punch after a while.
On DOOL, there is a lot to invest in; a lot of stories with beginnings, middles and ends. Ron packs a lot into a few minutes.
So I congratulate GH on their win, but must scratch my head as to how their writing is rated superior to DOOL.
Rodd, I have to agree, that Ron has done a very good job, of finally getting rid of the boring Chad and Abigail.I have been FF over their scenes. Now will have to watch the newly wedded Stefan and Godzilla Gabi. Chloe was fired, when obviously she and Stefan have so much chemistry, in favor of this new pairing.
Hope Ron has some magic, to make this new SL appealing.
In the year and 1/2 since RC material has been reeled.
October, 2017. which is , roughly 1 1/2 years.
I’ve withstood .. because it’s been that easy.. to not notice too much “cast” change.. the interweaving of canvas.. w/Guest STAR ie: think Louise Sorel.. she deserves GRAND. think Ali Sweeney… welcome respite.. WITH good writing.. jeesus.. thank time
thank time for getting us to and fro ? no? writing 365 days is a big show.
at this point: 2 stand out
I MISS
Thaao Penghlis
Nadia Bjorlin
stand these two any where on the canvas and they measure up
stand these two any where on the SET AND they take and they take your place
these are glaring omissions ; the chemistry with two stronghold of legion familial… the Dimera (Stefan) AND Kiriakis ( Brady ) AND with Nicole Baby… AND with her own ACT ? why did you do this ? she’s Chloe
the sophistication aplomb wit and serenity to chess play at the manse and throughout… CHEERS to Thaao Penghlis.. AND Lauren Koslow. I’m sure you miss these two…. Ron Carlivati ? comedic timing AND presence ; with carry ?
I read in SOD today… how much heel tongue in cheek OKAY you get it and know it.. how Lindsey Godfrey is just on command ? she’s imperfect perfect , as written.. what a welcome
I’m still in love with her
so alas, not tuning in to see Gabs AND Stefan… as he rocked it with Marci AND now, Nadia… he’s always going to REEL. that dream that never ends.. I’ve said it
I WOULD truly return Christie Clark’ Carrie Brady; AND, on many occasion her mother Anna DiMera as played by the lovely Lean Hunley. THAT ROMANCE and FATHERHOOD just oblitered AND showed Josh Taylor SEXIER as all get out. it’s great to see him with Rex.. but it’s Carrie and Anna that he belong.
with Abs gone
with Sami gone
with Belle gone
YOU NEED that heroine from either the Brady AND Horton.. and it’s Christie Clark … who is SEXIER as all get out. I’ve read she moved to London? WITH a Nice contract just to keep this show turning simmering and vibrant… ALIVE.
so yeah… missing Tony , Chloe, Carrie Brady ?
absolutely
Even though I’m not all that thrilled with the writing on GH, it’s surely a lot better than DOOL. I’ve always been bored with Days.
On the plus side, the two head writers can be credited with writing good stories for Laura, Kevin/Ryan, Anna and Jason and Sam. Maura West as Ava is truly outstanding.
I don’t care about the newer characters. I won’t miss Kiki, even though Erin Hayley did great work in the role.
Beyond thrilled my Favorite Love for 55 years!!! Best written & actors convey written words so eloquently. CONGRATULATIONS!! Confident they will keep us glued for many more years!❤
How did Ryan know Laura was at the facility. He left way before she was there. Give us a break guys. End this Ryan thing already”
Thank you for saying that, Ann….Desantis–“of the saints”—- your ancestors must be from the Abruzzo/Molise area….on the Adriatic….
I am so afraid of saying anything negative about GH on this site—-the accolades are overwhelming.
The Ryan story has been going on for too long. End it!! No sense!! Now, Jordan wants Franco to plead guilty? This is soooo nether-worldly….best writing? ( fans: no punches please).
Then we have to deal with Dawn of Doom……did ‘ye gods’ really need to come up with something so idiotic to propel Sam? Nothing can help this flat-toned, uninspiring actress. As much as I despise her, I’d rather watch Carly–at least she shows emotion and personality.( Love you, Laura Wright).
I guess poor Franco will be on his own for a while, hopefully to find and rescue Laura and Doc, after someone recently goes blind and mows down Jordan. The Dawn of Doom, as you put it is just started, and I’m sick of it already. Krissie is very much smitten with Shilo, and is not liking the attention payed to big sis. Oh, well, guess that’s the intention, among others, as the plot thickens.
I know a lot of people aren’t happy with General Hospital but I am enjoying it and it’s actually my favorite soap at the time…I watch GH, Y&R and B&B…Day’s in my opinion is not the show I loved in the 70’s till the 90’s…I do not like Ron C’s writing and I cannot stand DOOL background music which is so annoying…
