General Hospital's Laura Wright Weighs-In On The Future Of The Carly/Todd Relationship!

General Hospital’s Todd Manning is in hot water these days in Port Charles! After finally kick-starting a romance with Carly Corinthos Jax, Todd’s machinations in the baby switch plot with Heather Webber, and the heartache it caused Sam and Jason, has finally come to the attention of Carly and she is devastated when Todd admits what he did.
However in the latest issue of Soap Opera Digest on newsstands now, Daytime Emmy winner Laura Wright (Carly) discusses the future of the relationship between Todd (Roger Howarth) and Carly, and from what we can discern, this dynamic duo could be in each other’s orbit for the long haul!
Wright revealed, “The relationship with Todd, in my opinion, and I’m pretty sure Roger as well, is a big deal! Roger and I talked to the writers at the GH Christmas Party about how, yes, Blair and Todd are wonderful and Sonny and Carly have their history, but there is something about Carly/Todd that is whole new world. For these two characters what’s happened between them is extremely emotional, realizing that they have fallen in love with someone and they thought it could be forever and now that’s messed up and it’s very difficult.”
As angry as Carly is at this point with Todd, Wright points out that deep down, Carly does not want Todd out of her life citing: “In her heart, she wants him to try and win her back and tell her that she’s the most important thing in his world and he will do whatever it takes to fix it. I have a feeling that writers are going to be forced into it. (Laughs) I am telling you once all these scenes air the fans are going to go nuts!”

There was never any doubt that in watching the riveting and emotional scenes on General Hospital which featured Finola Hughes as a PTSD-driven and mentally tortured Anna Devane, that when the climatic moments in Anna’s story aired, that we would not be singing the praises of Hughes. Once again, Finola showcased why she is one of the soap opera genres greatest assets and actresses.
In the key scenes, Anna has had a complete breakdown as she has lured and cornered Britt (Kelly Thiebaud) on Mount Emerson, and even thought through how she would kill her and cover it up, all thanks to hearing the voice and seeing a dead man, Peter August (Wes Ramsey). It’s visions of Peter that keeps egging Anna on to pull the trigger on Britt while in her delusional state.
Before Britt realizes that Anna trapped her in meeting her in Mount Emerson, she is very confused as to why she was all the way out in the boondocks to talk about what happened to her brother, Cassius Faison. However, Britt soon learned that what Anna was about to do is personal, and not professional, as she pulls the gun on her.

ANNA FIRES HER GUN IN GAME-CHANGING MOMENT
When Jason (Steve Burton) shows up to save the say, he tries to talk Anna off the ledge, begging her to not shoot Britt and make one of the greatest mistakes of his life. When Jason figured out Anna felt she needed to kill anyone related to Cesar Faison, he made her think twice, because that would mean, she also would need to end the lives of two of Maxie’s children, James and Bailey Lu.
Anna can’t stop seeing hallucinations of Peter pushing her to shoot Britt. Suddenly and completely overcome, Anna fires bullets straight in the direction of where she sees Peter as she declares this all must end tonight.
After the shots are fired, Anna realized what she had done and just sobbed and shook. It was a devastating and heartbreaking moment for longtime General Hospital fans to see the beloved Anna Devane, super spy, so lost. Anna explained to Jason, after he was able to disarm her, how she was being pushed to kill Britt by her visions of Peter.
EMMY-WORTHY SCENES FOR 2027
In another hankie-inducing moment, Anna just grabs Jason and breaks down in his arms. If these weren’t Emmy-worthy scenes, we don’t know what is, and it must be remembered by Hughes, General Hospital, and hopefully the voting body of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) when Emmy submissions and voting get underway in 2027 for the 54th annual Daytime Emmys.

RATINGS: ‘General Hospital’ Shows Most Gains in Total Viewers Week-Over-Week and Up in Key Demo
The ratings are out for the week of August 24-28 for your favorite broadcast television soaps, and it was ABC’s General Hospital which added the most total viewers and planted itself firmly in third place in its battle with Beyond the Gates in the key demos of women 18-49 and 25-54.
According to Soap Opera Network, all daytime dramas were up year-over-year, and General Hospital was joined by The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful with gains in their total audience viewership, while Beyond the Gates was only slightly off pace for the ratings week.
Let’s take a look at what had viewers tuning-in, starting with General Hospital, who added +79,000 viewers. While still under the 2 million viewers mark (which they can hopefully return in the coming weeks) their overall tally was an average of 1, 935,000 tuning-in, while still up year-to-year +136,000.
GENERAL HOSPITAL
In addition, GH while actually down from the previous week in the 18-49 ratings share, they still out performed Beyond the Gates for third place. However, GH was firmly in third place for the 25-54 ratings share.
The stories that were featured for the week included: Anna’s (Finola Hughes) PTSD and struggle with painful memories tied to Cesar Faison, and her concocting a plan to get rid of Britt (Kelly Thiebaud), Willow (Katelyn MacMullen) recording Jack Brennan (Chris McKenna) threatening her, and later running into a severe threat from Alexis (Nancy Lee Grahn) regarding Kai (Jens Austin Astrup) and Drew’s (Cameron Mathison) shooting, and Drew enlisting Ava (Maura West) to gain leverage over Jack, which resulted in Ava drugging him, while Drew went snooping for the evidence Brennan had against him.

THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS
Y&R remained in the top spot amongst all the soaps once again with 3,062,000 tuning in, and up +35,000 for the week, while year-to-year still showing strong gains at +231,000 viewers. However, while Y&R remained #1 for the 25-54 ratings share, it fell to #2 in the 18-49 ratings share behind The Bold and the Beautiful.
In story for the week, Nick’s (Joshua Morrow) sobriety in rehab was a focus, as was Victoria (Amelia Heinle) and Kyle Abbott (Michael Mealor) hitting the Jabot office couch and having sex for the first time, and Lily (Christel Khalil) and Billy (Jason Thompson) battling over control and ownership of Chancellor Industries.

THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL
B&B is continuing to be inch closer to Y&R for the top spot, separated by a little more than 300,000 viewers. For the ratings week, the series posted a total audience of 2,719,000 adding +31,000 eyeballs overall, and like Y&R, is up year-to-year in its performance.
The CBS soap now , now in its 40th season is +217,000 from the same time last year. In the key demos, The Bold and the Beautiful was in the top spot for the women 18-49 ratings share and number two for women 25-54.
In story, the major threat to Steffy (Jacqueline MacInnes Wood) and Finn (Tanner Novlan) and Carter (Lawrence Saint-Victor) and Daphne’s (Murielle Hilaire) marriages continued as Steffy and Carter swore they would not tell their spouses that the two had a drunken hook-up. But as viewers know now, Steffy is pregnant!

BEYOND THE GATES
Beyond the Gates tallied an average of 1,611,000 total viewers for the week, up +72.000 year-over-year and down slightly in tune-in for the week losing just -36,000 viewers. The CBS soap came in fourth place in the key demos for the week behind General Hospital, with whom they are often trading places for the third spot.
In story, after Bill Hamilton (Timon Kyle Durrett) was released from the hospital, Hayley (Marquita Goings) stuck to her plan, doubling down on poisoning him and even getting caught in a major lie or meeting with Randy (Maurice P. Kerry), as Vernon (Clifton Davis) may be on to her machinations.

Kelly Sullivan Gives High Praise to ‘General Hospital’s’ Maura West Recalling When Ava Shot Connie (Exclusive)
It was just over 13 years ago on General Hospital when Ava Jerome (Maura West) shot and killed Kate Howard/Connie Falconeri (Kelly Sullivan) in an effort to keep her quiet from revealing that Derek Wells was actually Ava’s back-from-the-dead brother, Julian Jerome (William deVry). It’s a crime that somehow Ava never has quite paid for either.
The episode back aired on August 13, 2013 and viewers had to say goodbye to Kelly Sullivan who played Kate and her alter, Connie. In the story, just before she died, Kate/Connie scrawled the letters AJ in her own blood, initially making the PCPD and Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard) think that it was AJ Quatermaine (Sean Kanan) who did the deed.
Now, Sullivan recalled sharing scenes with the three-time Daytime Emmy-winning West, during a live conversation on You Tube’s Michael Fairman Channel. Kelly was the special guest talking about her recent return to the soaps in her new role as The Bold and the Beautiful’s Darcy Dylan.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS OF MAURA WEST
Speaking of her final GH scenes and working with Maura West, Sullivan gave her then GH co-star major props. “If you’re going to be shot by somebody (on the soaps), you want to be shot by Maura West, c’mon!”
Maura West debuted back in May 2013 as Ava, and Sullivan remembered when the As the World Turns favorite began on GH. “I remember when Maura West first arrived at GH. She walked in with this cute little bob (hairdo) and she’s just delicious,” shared Sullivan.
A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE
Kelly revealed more about Maura, adding “I think she’s amazing! I remember right before I left the show, someone suggested, and I would still love to do this with her, if she ever want to, but someone suggested that they wanted to direct the stage play A Streetcar Named Desire with Maura and I, where I would play Stella and she would play Blanche! Wouldn’t that be great?”
Speaking of the Ava/Connie showdown scenes, Sullivan expressed, “On television and on General Hospital specifically, Maura West is able to play a character who does the most horrendous things and you still care about her and that’s the mark of a really great actor. In other words, you’re able to be liked in the midst of the most horrendous things, and as a performer not shying away from that, and to just have the courage to do what’s on the page (in the script).”

KELLY SULLIVAN PARTING THOUGHTS AS SHE LEFT GENERAL HOSPITAL
Kelly also shared her sentiments when she walked off the set of General Hospital after her run back in August of 2013. “I really was honored. Every day I would go to work and I would say a little prayer, which is I want to do justice for my character, explained Kelly. “It’s between me and my character. I get to walk this path with her and to leave the show on that note, which is, I left every out there. I just gave it my all and again what an honor it was to play Kate/Connie.”

Viewers will never 100 % agree with a pairing of characters (poor writers) . I personally LOVE the Todd and Carly Together. I’ve never seen Carly look vulnerable /nervous around a male character as she does with Todd. Carly inspires Todd to be a better man (he admitted he doesn’t want to disappoint her ) I really hope they find their way back to each other.
I’m enjoying the two of them together!

Laura is one of very favorites and has chemistry woth a doorknob, and I love Roger H. Also but I still want Todd and Blair to find a way to make it work. They share children, history and love. Carly needs a new man or bring back Jax.

I totally agree.. Todd and Blair are Soulmate and belng together.. They have a 2decade Lovestory that is magical. Kassie and Roger are Awesome together as Todd and Blair and they deserve to be reunited. We were promised The Mannings on GH, we tuned in and we support GH.. Blair is the one true love and only friend that Todd has ever had/wanted/needed.
Carly belongs with Jax or Sonny.

This Carly & Todd thing is utter crap & I’ll be glad when they’ll both move on to better storylines. They’ve contrived a friendship and then a romance between those two characters from day one. Yes the actors have good chemistry together but the writing has to back it up or else it’s just out of character crap.
What do they really know about each other? Does Carly even know about everything Todd has done in the past? We all know she’s pretty much dabbled in everything shady but any woman would think twice before getting involved with a rapist, let alone one who led a gang rape. I also don’t buy that she’d take Todd back after everything he did to her precious Jason. If there’s one defining character trait that all the versions of Carly have had over the years, it’s their steadfast loyalty to Jason.
And I can’t even begin to tell you how out of character Todd has been portrayed in this relationship. Todd has had intimacy issues since the gang rape & just because he’s been tortured for 8 years, should not make those issues magically disappear. If anything, it should make him even more skittish. Blair taught him how to be intimate with someone again after Marty’s rape & it took Todd no less than 5 years before he could sleep with Tea. He’s known Carly for less than a year & already he’s taken her to bed? So out of character it’s painful to watch.
So no, I don’t want to be subjected to one more minute of this dreck.
I agree with your every word. Todd is a complex and dark character while Carly is just a shallow and selfish aging valley girl. In her presence, Todd starts to become mundane and uninteresting swallowed up the great big as, er, abyss that is is Carly. Moreover, they have NO chemistry–terrible couple, just terrible.

I watched just a little bit and the actress who plays Carly seemed to push herself on that poor man who plays Todd. Is it just me or was there zero chemistry? It seemed like that actress was all over him. I couldn’t watch it. When I used to watch this show, there was a real pretty actress with brown hair that I thought was “Carly”. She had a softer side but was strong too. This actress with Todd comes across as a hard, thick skinned person. I thought Carly was a mom, unless I must have the wrong show. This can’t be the same one.

I am not sure about Liz and AJ…maybe if we see them start as friends. Bonnie, I think AJ is a bit ‘cold’ and distant too. I hope that is intentional and he will ‘warm up’ after a bit.

The pairing is VERY FORCED and even though Mr. Howarth has chemistry with a almost everyone i TOTALLY dont see it with these two. i certainly dont find them sexy or fun and considering just two weeks ago todd was jumping for joy that blair is not with tomas anymore and we know he still loves blair these two for me are MORE forced down my throat then ever. I hope that the victor is alive is finally setteled so we and todd find out he didnt kill his brother. That is the one point that is keeping todd and blair apart. The negative comments are because Kassie Depaiva tweeted her crazy fans to make negative comments on this. It is rude and tacky and she got called out for it by many soapers. She needs to find something else to do.

It’s desperate of LW to presume that there’s some “forever love” kind of dynamic there between Todd and Carly when a few weeks ago Todd was crumbling up Blair and Toerenzo’s wedding announcement and screaming about it, and then did cartwheels when he found out he could stop Blair’s wedding and did. Carly’s a dumbass if she thinks Todd will ever feel about her the way he feels about Blair. Blair is Todd’s soulmate and one true love. It was completely inappropriate for LW to talk about TnB like she did, and for her to equate Todd and Carly’s FORCED and CONTRIVED friendship as something that has anything to do with forever. RMFE. I have always been a tnb fan but I’m a full on tarly fan these days. I love the chemistry between the two of them. I watched the jail scenes yesterday, what a amazing job they did. The scenes were full of emotion, angst, pain, drama and i dare say love. I have not been this excited about a week couple in a long time. I can’t wait for more tarly in 2013.
Agree about those jail scenes! They were both rocking it! THey have chemistry but maybe it’s more the kind of chemistry that brings them both into being better actors than the sexual type of chemistry. That’s why if they stayed friends and good friends that tried to make each other better people… I would be happy with that too!

I like Carly & Todd as friends, not as lovers. This Todd has had his history re-written so much, he’s nothing like who he started out as all those years ago. Of course everyone changes & matures, but some of those basic personality traits don’t change. This Todd is unrecognizable.
I really believe the only women who would give him a chance in the love department are Blair and Tea because they’ve know him through it all and have an understanding of who and what he is…and why.

What about the choices that Carly has made in AJ, Jason, Sonny, Johnny, Shawn, Alcazar, Tony (a married man at the time). Jax was really the only decent choice she has made. Everyone else was or is in organized crime or a liar.

I’m really just commenting on the fact that Todd, a rapist and a murderer, who had issues with intimacy, is now portrayed as a romantic hero. It just goes against his character.
Also, it IS characteristic for Carly to fall for a guy like Todd…just too bad that she is. Jax was really the best man for her. Too bad she screwed it up!
Finally, I love Todd when he’s mischievous and funny, but I get twitchy when he’s in ANY romantic situation.
As much as I prefer Todd and Carly as friends – I have to disagree with your statement that Todd is unrecognizable. He is the same selfish screw-up he’s always been! He makes choices that blow up in his face and he lies & manipulates to cover it up – until it all comes out.
The friendship between them was very real to me, as Carly CAN relate to Todd’s bad choices and how he handles them. If they took the friendship further and eventually had them become more involved, I would accept it better.

Just wondering how long the “long haul” would actually be given the recent developments with Prospect Park’s revival of OLTL. Since they own the OLTL characters, how long can any of them stay on GH once OLTL goes back into production?
Also, in the most recent GH promo, the heat between Laura’s Carly and Sean K.’s A.J. is palpable. Those two generated more heat together in those few seconds in the promo than Todd and Carly have in all of their time together on GH. If I was Laura, I’d be all over a Carly/AJ pairing!

Todd and Blair are the love of each other’s lives and they are still very much in love with each other.
Blair needs to be brought on PRONTO so that the audience can see just how much of a nothing Carly is to Todd in comparison to Blair.

I really don’t see anything sexy or fun about these two. I see a man manipulating and a woman fool enough to fall for it. At least up until yesterday.
I truly liked them as friends and did not want to see any romance between them. BUT, listening to Carly recently, I would give them a chance if the story was done right.
There always have to be obstacles (storyline that is) in the way for a making of a super couple. This strengthens the characters, their relationship and fans start to root for them. Carly and Todd have that potential and hope the writers keep them going. Blair has chemistry with a lot of men. It would be wonderful for her to find someone who doesn’t turn out to be a psychopath or spy. Jack needs a positive male role model in his life.
I am bored out of my mind with Todd and Carly. Blair/Todd and Sonny/Carly had passion, love, insanity, and most of all they were entertaining. If Todd/Carly are a whole new world, then I prefer the old one. This is why soaps are dying. Forced couples with no depth!!!
I am soooo on board with this! Love this couple! LW and RH have major chemistry and their love scene was the hottest thing I have seen on daytime in forever! The characters have these qualities about them that make them a perfect match!

Todd going this long without going out there and searching for his OTB makes no sense. If he was able to leave TEA, a woman he had MUCH more history with and shared much more with, on an ISLAND to go search for Blair, there is NO reason the writers should INSULT us and tell us that somehow the 5 minute thing he’s had with Carly is so special that they’re meant to be together. The Carly fans will find another man to root for Carly with, let them give us back our TnB 20 year supercouple and quit being greedy!
As much as I’d prefer Carly+Jax to reunite, I’d be willing to accept something casual between Carly+Todd. They’re the two outcasts and those who enjoy the bad side of life sometimes. It’ll be nice to see their relationship develop.
I wish Sarah Brown was playing Carly. Her original version always reminded me of Roger’s Todd on OLTL in the 90s. You couldn’t take your eyes off them.

Honestly, I have no words. I cannot believe that Todd has been this destroyed since his arrival in Port Charles. I mean RC has force-fed this contrived pairing since day 1 – from that stupid Cosmo quiz to reassuring Carly that she’s beautiful every single day to telling her she is the ONLY friend he’s EVER had. No Todd fan can actually think that that last part is ok. It totally rewrites his whole history. He’s had friends in Blair, but that was REAL friendship, and he wasn’t lying to her the whole time. He was friends with Tea and Sam Rappaport… Like the only way Ron can make this pairing exist is by completely rewriting both character’s histories. Never mind how Todd has completely forgotten about his family, never mind how Carly forgot about Jason… Ugh. This is just so wrong on so many levels and I honestly don’t know how Roger could be ok with it because this is just as bad as TSJ’s Victor. They’ve basically replaced Blair with Carly in Todd’s life and gave them a poor man’s version of their story – no history, no chemistry, no depth, no investment. Way to go, Ron. You’ve destroyed “Todd Manning” twice now. Carly can keep this pathetic shell of a once iconic character.

I think what they did with Todd was genius because they have made him likable. Before he was just a sociopathic rapist/criminal with major control issues. I have been watching GH since 1985 and not once…NEVER, EVER, not even for ONE minute, did I ever believe the Sonny/Carly relationship. It seemed too forced to me back when they first started, although admittedly, I was probably too hung up on Sonny and Brenda at the time. However I have liked Sonny with others (NOT Emily, ew gross) and I have liked Carly with others (not Johnny). Now, I am LOVING Todd and Carly. He’s such an ass who messes everything up ALL the time, but he’s so funny and charming and as much as I want to strangle him, I can’t help but love him! I am ALL for this couple lasting.
Thanks for this interview, Laura. After yesterday’s show, my heart was breaking for these two. Wonderful job by both and it just seems like it would be a terrible waste of the great chemistry between these two actors to not write story for them.
Hoping for much more in the year to come and praying that the Prospect Park reboot does not interfere with their story.

I am loving Todd and Carly together. It is so refreshing to see Todd opposite someone that has not already been through the ringer with him. I adore Kassie DePaiva, but there is no way Blair would still be in love with Todd. Their pairing at the end was forced. Todd lied to her every other week. He gave away her baby and led her to believe it was dead. they should have been over at that point. Carly will forgive Todd, she has done terrible things too. I look forward to years of trouble from these two.
