General Hospital’s Nicholas Chavez and Tabyana Ali Talk on the Magic of ‘Sprina’
They are drawing comparisons to a young Luke (Tony Geary) and Laura (Genie Francis), soap opera’s most-famed couple. Now in 2023, the duo known to General Hospital fans as Sprina are daytime’s newest ‘Power Couple’ and now have been deemed so by PEOPLE, who has a feature on the young actors who play the romantic pair.
Speaking with Nicholas Chavez (Spencer) and Tabyana Ali (Trina), the young stars dished on what makes their on-screen dynamic so palpable and popular to viewers at home. But of course, like any soap opera couple, there are constant obstacles that pull them apart, so that when they do reunite, it’s a magical moment for the fans and the storyline. Look no further than in recent episodes when fearing Spencer died in Greenland, and seeing him alive, Trina leaps into his arms and the two share a kiss. Now for all of Sprina history, we are certain that moment will play on any sizzle reel for the duo.
So, why does the on-screen relationship click? Tabyana shared, “I think they’re actually twin flames. And there’s a period of time before twin flames can be together. They have to go through this up-and-down tumultuous ride to have the calm waters. They must have the thunderstorm before they get to the sunset.”

As to similarities to the mighty Luke and Laura, Nick Chavez expressed, “They are drawing a pretty direct comparison and they’re not being super subtle about it. But we love it, and we think that it’s super smart. It’s the greatest compliment we could ever get.”
Nick also weighed-in on the actress change when original Trina, Sydney Mikayla decided to leave the series and Tabyana was the recast. The Daytime Emmy-winning star and a nominee again this year, said, “What amazes me is that we went two for two in creating something beautiful and connecting with people. It’s getting everyone excited and it’s a testament to how good [General Hospital executive producer] Frank Valentini and (casting director) Mark Teschner are at their jobs.”

As for their off-the-chart scenes together, Ali shared: “I think now our chemistry is so much stronger because of the connection we have outside of work. Our dynamic is really special because we understand each other on a very deep level.”

It’s that palpable chemistry and the ease at how comfortable they are with each other in their scenes! The story is there even though I’m not a fan of these obstacles. I know they happen but as long as Sprina is always at the center and together that’s what will sustain them as this shows only current Super Couple!
There is no magic—there is a zero connection between them. Prehaps, it’s the fact that compared to Avery, nuTrina is not as effective as Sydney was—I wish she’d make a comeback. The girl had oomph and style.
Spencer is too hot for this homely girl. I actually mute her. Now, we find that she and Joss plan to sabotage Esme. WOW–Joss is her mother’s daughter—she and Trina lower themselves to Esme’s pre-amnesia level?
I hope Esme never regains her past memories. What would a very true to form, soapy soap be without twists and turns? A Spencer-Esme falling in love storyline would be a pleasant shocker for moi.,Hot couple. Far cry from wishy-washy nuTrina.

Someone on Twitter refers to Dex as Tiny Jason. They had Joss singing,” Hold me closer Tiny Jason” to the tune of Elton John’s “ Tiny Dancer.” Now I have song in my head whenever I see Joss and Dex.
HaHaHaHaHa—A perfect description of Dex—He is kind of puny with a head too big for his shoulders. The same could apply to Elton John. Have you ever noticed ( especially when playing those keys) how tiny his arms are compared to the rest of him? I am so mean, Harry. Not nice of me. Right?

Oh Celia, our poor Spencer. He seems to be maturing by the minute (and getting even better looking), while Trina actually seems to be shrinking, even as a character. What to do? I hate the Eddie (horse’s?) Mane story, Anna and Valentin bore me and ALL OF Sonny & Carly’s many tales are strictly fast-forward. Even Tracy’s venom seems misplaced (picking on the divine Chase? Really?) I guess it’s summer doldrums, not helped by those silly pool scenes. Oy vey. Well, Happy 4th to you, my friend!

Not that I find very intriguing, but what is Tracy up to? Flimsy plot, at best. Nonetheless, call me weird but i love her. I get such a kick out of her–And, she looks great–even with gray hair. It suits her and dies not diminish her goid looks. This character, at least, has personality. Isn’t there a song about personality? I know I heard it somewhere. LOL
Esme is not anyone’s favorite, I know—but, Soaphound, I’ve always like Avery’s acting skills and savoir faire, and flair.
I truly hope she keeps this new persona–She and Spencer are it—I feel the the sexual vibe just under the surface–When they do get “together” . Look out!! An explosion!!

Actually the other day with Esme, the baby and Spencer looked so right together, but I guess only a miracle will clear Esme of her wrongdoings, which I can’t even remember anymore what she’s done.
Hey, Violet—Esme did a lot of bad stuff, but her acting skills make up for all her misdeeds LOL.

Spencer and Trina are the best couple this show has had in years and years. They’ve written them as a true Supercouple overcoming many obstacles to find their way to one another. I love the chemistry and clear trust that Tabyana and Nicholas have as acting partners. I mean, how else would that amazing leap and kiss happen unscripted?! So fun to watch! Reminded me of old school soap moments. They are giving everything a good soap couple needs to give! Congrats to the actors and GH on getting recognition from PEOPLE magazine!

It’s not PEOPLE magazine which makes the impact. It’s the viewer—and, most here, do not think she’s a good match for Spencer and his, “kiss me quick, take me now” sensual aura— No spunk. No heat. No nothing.
Any positive PR is good for GH and the soap genre in general. I’m glad People magazine featured this couple on their cover. I don’t see this couple lasting too long because Nicholas Chavez is quite a find and is bound for bigger things.

Hours after we posted these comments, it was announced that Nicholas Chavez was cast in a hit Netflix series. Onward and upward!
This is an old post Harry and I’m sure you know by now he’s starring in yet another Menendez brothers story; it’ll be a limited series I believe. There are now rumors going around that he won’t be returning to GH and “clues” that he was taken off contract and he stopped following some GH actors. I kinda think it’s all publicity so that all his fans can wring their hands and lament that he won’t be back. I’m thinking he will. Nothing like a steady paycheck and accolades until/if your star really shines and he has huge offers coming his way. Time will tell. To be honest? I think he has a long way to go acting-wise. He worked on his body (compare his rather thin self to the muscular body he built; he looks amazing) and his acting HAS improved (I wasn’t impressed at all at the beginning. His over-the-top rages and screaming in every screen drove me nuts, especially when in scenes with the very subdued Marcus Coloma, who was able to convert hurt and anger without seeming unhinged; there was a subtlety to Marcus’s performance that Ioved. But I digress… 😉

I think what you’re picking up on is Nicholas started weightlifting and he’s bulking up. So, the height and weight disparities between the two are amplified.
I’m rather apathetic about this couple. I don’t hate them, don’t love them. I think they’re kind of cute but wish Spencer wasn’t always babysitting his baby brother. It’s kind of a buzz kill.
I totally agree. I FF, cannot see them together, it makes me cringe. I particularly dislike all the comments on the GH groups of how beautiful she is. I wondering if your real problem with Trina is that she is the first black actress that skin complexion is darker in tone that was cast to be in a relationship with Spencer who is a white male actor on General Hospital. Since, typically this types of roles have gone to black female actress that are lighter or fairer in skin complexion and from reading your post you seem to prefer Esme who is a white female who you deemed to look better with Spencer or should I say whiter, lighter, fairer in skin complexion, because to me if you are honest with yourself she is no beauty and can be considered by a majority of people as being plain and not a well dressed actress like Joslin. So stop making racial comments about Trina being not the right actress that cast for this role.

I have watched General Hospital since the late 1970s and I still watch today. Luke and Laura were my first supercouple to watch faithfully. There have been others that I have enjoyed, as well. But none come close to Spencer and Trina (Sprina)! The chemistry between Nicholas Alexander Chavez and Tabyana Ali is amazing. When they look at each other, it’s magic. For a couple to have just had their first kiss just a few short months ago and not yet had an official first date, they have extreme rooting value. Nicholas and Tabyana make you feel their chatacters’ yearnings for each other. That takes talent, that takes chemistry, and that takes a connection – things that the actors work to bring out in each scene. There was no doubt about their abilities and chemistry after their amazing work with the Haunted Star storyline.They both talk about working together beforehand to create strong scenes, which is apparent. I look forward to Sprina’s romance continuing in the very capable hands of their wonderfully talented portrayers.

This girl is not a good actress, she looks twelve, she is not sexy, she’s not up to par with a phenomenon such as Nicholas/Spencer, and she needs to start acting herself. I think this is the problem. She cannot assume an acting persona. I wasn’t watching during the Luke and Laura era–I don’t think i was born yet—but i was a ore-teen when I became enchanted by Nick and Sharon ( Y&R)—no way do this Trina and Soencer come even close to any other soap couple. They get a big, fat zero. Perhaps, if Nicholas were to be coupled with Esme again? —or anyone else other than Tabyana—Joss has all the trimmings needed for a hot other half. My opinion.

I gotta say, some of these comments are disgusting; just like I remember from years ago, and it comes from the same source. Years ago it was about Alexis’s “sagging boobs,” and now it’s about Dex’s head too big, he’s too puny, Trina is “homely,” too much teeth…what a bunch of self-righteous, superficial, moronic, insulting comments coming from a site where no one has to show his or her face. So easy to rip apart another human being’s looks as if they’re not actual people. The slightest soapy thing that could and has happened to many characters before her is now seen with a race slant. Every slight the character suffers the writers are accused of being racist or have written it that way because she’s black. 53rd Annual Daytime Emmy Nominations Announced: ‘The Young and the Restless’ Tops With 18, ‘Beyond the Gates’ With 16
The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) today announced the full list of nominees for the upcoming 53rd Annual Daytime Emmy Awards, and it was CBS daytime’s The Young and the Restless and broadcast television newest soap opera, Beyond the Gates that racked up the most nominations with 18 and 16, respectively.
The full reveal on Tuesday follows the announcement of several major categories including Lead Actor and Actress on Monday via Extra and Entertainment Tonight and The View today revealing Daytime Drama Series and more.
The 53rd Annual Daytime Emmys ceremony is set to take place on Friday, October 30 at the historic Hollywood Palladium in Hollywood, California.

In a statement, Adam Sharp, President and CEO of NATAS expressed, “We’re proud to honor the extraordinary talent and creative teams whose work continues to define and elevate daytime television, As the Daytime landscape evolves and new forms of storytelling emerge, we remain committed to recognizing the innovation happening across the industry.”
“Each year, the Daytime Emmy Awards celebrate the creativity, passion, and dedication that drive this vibrant community of storytellers,” said Rachel Schwartz, Head of the Daytime Emmy Awards. “Congratulations to this year’s nominees, whose work continues to entertain, inspire and connect with audiences every day. We look forward to celebrating their remarkable achievements in Hollywood this October.”
The Daytime Emmy Awards have recognized outstanding achievement in television programming and crafts since 1974, honoring work in a variety of genres, including daytime dramas, talk series, entertainment news, culinary, adventure, instructional and legal/courtroom programming.
This year’s Lifetime Achievement Honoree, Gold & Silver Circle Inductees, and ceremony host will be announced at a later date.

‘General Hospital’s’ Steve Burton Shares Reaction to His Lead Actor Daytime Emmy Nomination, ‘It Was to Honor Leslie Charleson’
The 53rd Annual Daytime Emmy Award nominations kicked-off on Monday with the announcements of four major categories including, Outstanding Lead Performer in a Daytime Drama Series — Actor, and among the nominees is General Hospital’s Steve Burton (Jason Morgan).
Burton is already a two-time Daytime Emmy winner in the Supporting Actor category for his roles as GH’s Jason and his turn as Dylan McAvoy on Y&R. However, Steve is yet to win in the Lead Actor category and he has received 11 nominations along the way in his daytime career.
Following the reveal that he is a 2026 Daytime Emmy nominee, he and his GH co-star, podcast co-host and comedy show partner, Bradford Anderson (Spinelli) taped a special edition of their That’s Awesome podcast just featuring Burton’s reaction to the news.

Steve expressed, “I know it’s such a cliche to say, ‘I’m just so honored to be nominated.’ But truly, I’m so grateful to be nominated, so grateful to just be on the show off and on for 30 plus years and to be nominated with the guys in my category. Just to get the opportunity. Frank (Valentini, executive producer, GH) texted me right away. I was just like, ‘Thank you for the opportunity to get to do what I do.'”
Taking in the moment, Burton thanked those who helped him select the material for his nominated reel. “Unless you win, you don’t get to say things. So. I’m going just say a few things: Elizabeth Korte (co-head writer, GH) helped me a lot with the material, (as did) Michelle Henry, who’s a producer on the show, Laura Wright (Carly, GH), and then my wife Michelle (Lundstrom). I believe it was Jill Phelps who told me that when A Martinez felt like he had a great show or great scenes, he would mark it down. So, when Emmy time comes, you have all the show numbers written down, and you don’t have to think about it, because that’s half the battle (finding the material).
Burton explained how meaningful this nomination is for him, because of playing the scenes of Jason losing Monica, and his closeness with the late, great Leslie Charleson.
“The nomination’s an amazing thing, and it’s beautiful, but really it’s to honor Leslie Charleson. A lot of my material was because of her, and how I started on the show as a Quartermaine, it just means a ton,” shared Burton. “Maurice Benard (Sonny, GH) has obviously has been instrumental, and I’ve said it from day one and I’ll shout it from the rooftops. If it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t be here, and to be working with the people that we work with is incredible.”

SHOULD JOHN OLIVER BE NAMED HOST OF THE DAYTIME EMMYS?
During the end of his conversation with Anderson, Steve suggested that the host of the Daytime Emmy should be Last Week Tonight’s John Oliver, who recently guest starred as the head of the WSB named Z on General Hospital, and is soon to show up on Days of Our Lives in a mystery role in August.
Thus far, the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences has not revealed their host for the upcoming ceremony to be held on October 30 in a venue to be named in Hollywood, California.

GENERAL HOSPITAL: Jason Reconnects with Danny; Tristan Roberts Arrives in Port Charles, Lots of Nods to #16
General Hospital’s 16,000th episode was packed with little reminders through points in today’s script that the ABC daytime drama series has set another milestone and it paved the way for the return of fan favorite and newly nominated Daytime Emmy Lead Actor nominee Steve Burton (Jason Morgan). The 16,000th episode also introduced viewers to the new surgeon in Port Charles Dr. Tristan Roberts played by Dean Geyer.
Here are the key takeaways and what went down on the July 13 episode: Tristan and Jason are seated next to each other on a plane heading to Port Charles. Throughout the flight, a beaten up Jason has flashbacks to being thrown into, and being held captive in a cell and tortured. It appears Jason is suffering from some form of PTSD from what he was put through after being dragged out of Port Charles by the WSB months ago.
As the plane prepares to land, Tristan tells Jason there would be a car waiting for him once they land and to enjoy the rest of his life. Later, Tristan arrives at the nurses and doctors hub at GH and approaches Elizabeth (Rebecca Herbst). He tells her his name and that he is the new surgeon on staff.

A REUNION PLUS A HEAD NURSE DEFENDS SONNY
Meanwhile, at the end of the episode, Jason is outside the Quartermaine boathouse looking bewildered when he runs into Danny (Asher Antonyzyn), who is so thrilled to see his father, and the two hugs each other as tears are shed.
Elsewhere, Elizabeth tells Sonny (Maurice Benard) that he thinks its a great idea for him to get the 16th seat on the hospital board, but when it comes times to convince Tracy Quartermaine (Jane Elliot) of that, things go awry when Tracy, Laura and Sonny try to work things out. After Tracy launches into Sonny about killing Alan and Monica’s son AJ, Sonny walks away dejected.
Next, Sonny runs into Elizabeth, where he informs her what happened with Tracy. So what’s a head nurse to do? Elizabeth marches into the conference room and reminds Tracy of all the different donations and ways Sonny has contributed to the hospital from the Stone Cates AIDS wing, to the Michael Corinthos Center for Pediatric Head Injuries as well as his constant support each year for the GH Nurses’ Ball.

Then, in one of the best parts for longtime fans of the series, Elizabeth talks about her legendary grandparents, Audrey and Steve Hardy and she tells Tracy they would have wanted Sonny to have a seat on the board for all the good that he has done for the hospital. After Elizabeth states Sonny’s case, things took a turn and Tracy and Sonny wound up shaking hands as Sonny is board member #16.
In the how great was it to see Anna (Finola Hughes) and Valentin (James Patrick Stuart) together scenes department, the pick-up of last Friday’s cliffhanger is played out as the two former lovers fill each other in on what has gone down in their lives in the last several months including Valentin admitting he had been living in Carly’s attic, and Anna realizing she was kidnapped by Cullum, Sidwell and Cassius Faison. During their conversation, Anna sees the hallucination of Peter August (Wes Ramsey) right while Valentin is standing there.

Later Anna was on her way to saying goodbye to Valentin, when the two share an emotional hug. After Valentin made his exit, Peter reappeared and warned Anna to not let Valentin distract her because she has important work to do. Anna answers, “I know.”
