‘General Hospital’s’ Steve Burton Shares Reaction to His Lead Actor Daytime Emmy Nomination, ‘It Was to Honor Leslie Charleson’

The 53rd Annual Daytime Emmy Award nominations kicked-off on Monday with the announcements of four major categories including, Outstanding Lead Performer in a Daytime Drama Series — Actor, and among the nominees is General Hospital’s Steve Burton (Jason Morgan).
Burton is already a two-time Daytime Emmy winner in the Supporting Actor category for his roles as GH’s Jason and his turn as Dylan McAvoy on Y&R. However, Steve is yet to win in the Lead Actor category and he has received 11 nominations along the way in his daytime career.
Following the reveal that he is a 2026 Daytime Emmy nominee, he and his GH co-star, podcast co-host and comedy show partner, Bradford Anderson (Spinelli) taped a special edition of their That’s Awesome podcast just featuring Burton’s reaction to the news.

Photo: JPI
FOR LESLIE CHARLESON
Steve expressed, “I know it’s such a cliche to say, ‘I’m just so honored to be nominated.’ But truly, I’m so grateful to be nominated, so grateful to just be on the show off and on for 30 plus years and to be nominated with the guys in my category. Just to get the opportunity. Frank (Valentini, executive producer, GH) texted me right away. I was just like, ‘Thank you for the opportunity to get to do what I do.'”
Taking in the moment, Burton thanked those who helped him select the material for his nominated reel. “Unless you win, you don’t get to say things. So. I’m going just say a few things: Elizabeth Korte (co-head writer, GH) helped me a lot with the material, (as did) Michelle Henry, who’s a producer on the show, Laura Wright (Carly, GH), and then my wife Michelle (Lundstrom). I believe it was Jill Phelps who told me that when A Martinez felt like he had a great show or great scenes, he would mark it down. So, when Emmy time comes, you have all the show numbers written down, and you don’t have to think about it, because that’s half the battle (finding the material).
Burton explained how meaningful this nomination is for him, because of playing the scenes of Jason losing Monica, and his closeness with the late, great Leslie Charleson.
“The nomination’s an amazing thing, and it’s beautiful, but really it’s to honor Leslie Charleson. A lot of my material was because of her, and how I started on the show as a Quartermaine, it just means a ton,” shared Burton. “Maurice Benard (Sonny, GH) has obviously has been instrumental, and I’ve said it from day one and I’ll shout it from the rooftops. If it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t be here, and to be working with the people that we work with is incredible.”

SHOULD JOHN OLIVER BE NAMED HOST OF THE DAYTIME EMMYS?
During the end of his conversation with Anderson, Steve suggested that the host of the Daytime Emmy should be Last Week Tonight’s John Oliver, who recently guest starred as the head of the WSB named Z on General Hospital, and is soon to show up on Days of Our Lives in a mystery role in August.
Thus far, the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences has not revealed their host for the upcoming ceremony to be held on October 30 in a venue to be named in Hollywood, California.
You can watch Steve sharing his reaction to receiving his 2026 Lead Actor Daytime Emmy nomination below on a special segment on the That’s Awesome podcast.
Now let us know, are you glad that Steve chose scenes surrounding Jason mourning the loss of the woman that raised him, Monica Quartermaine for his Emmy reel? What do you think of John Oliver as a suggestion to host the Daytime Emmys? Weigh-in via the comment section below.

GENERAL HOSPITAL: Jason Reconnects with Danny; Tristan Roberts Arrives in Port Charles, Lots of Nods to #16

General Hospital’s 16,000th episode was packed with little reminders through points in today’s script that the ABC daytime drama series has set another milestone and it paved the way for the return of fan favorite and newly nominated Daytime Emmy Lead Actor nominee Steve Burton (Jason Morgan). The 16,000th episode also introduced viewers to the new surgeon in Port Charles Dr. Tristan Roberts played by Dean Geyer.
Here are the key takeaways and what went down on the July 13 episode: Tristan and Jason are seated next to each other on a plane heading to Port Charles. Throughout the flight, a beaten up Jason has flashbacks to being thrown into, and being held captive in a cell and tortured. It appears Jason is suffering from some form of PTSD from what he was put through after being dragged out of Port Charles by the WSB months ago.
As the plane prepares to land, Tristan tells Jason there would be a car waiting for him once they land and to enjoy the rest of his life. Later, Tristan arrives at the nurses and doctors hub at GH and approaches Elizabeth (Rebecca Herbst). He tells her his name and that he is the new surgeon on staff.

A REUNION PLUS A HEAD NURSE DEFENDS SONNY
Meanwhile, at the end of the episode, Jason is outside the Quartermaine boathouse looking bewildered when he runs into Danny (Asher Antonyzyn), who is so thrilled to see his father, and the two hugs each other as tears are shed.
Elsewhere, Elizabeth tells Sonny (Maurice Benard) that he thinks its a great idea for him to get the 16th seat on the hospital board, but when it comes times to convince Tracy Quartermaine (Jane Elliot) of that, things go awry when Tracy, Laura and Sonny try to work things out. After Tracy launches into Sonny about killing Alan and Monica’s son AJ, Sonny walks away dejected.
Next, Sonny runs into Elizabeth, where he informs her what happened with Tracy. So what’s a head nurse to do? Elizabeth marches into the conference room and reminds Tracy of all the different donations and ways Sonny has contributed to the hospital from the Stone Cates AIDS wing, to the Michael Corinthos Center for Pediatric Head Injuries as well as his constant support each year for the GH Nurses’ Ball.

WSB WAR SCARS
Then, in one of the best parts for longtime fans of the series, Elizabeth talks about her legendary grandparents, Audrey and Steve Hardy and she tells Tracy they would have wanted Sonny to have a seat on the board for all the good that he has done for the hospital. After Elizabeth states Sonny’s case, things took a turn and Tracy and Sonny wound up shaking hands as Sonny is board member #16.
In the how great was it to see Anna (Finola Hughes) and Valentin (James Patrick Stuart) together scenes department, the pick-up of last Friday’s cliffhanger is played out as the two former lovers fill each other in on what has gone down in their lives in the last several months including Valentin admitting he had been living in Carly’s attic, and Anna realizing she was kidnapped by Cullum, Sidwell and Cassius Faison. During their conversation, Anna sees the hallucination of Peter August (Wes Ramsey) right while Valentin is standing there.

Courtesy/ABC
Later Anna was on her way to saying goodbye to Valentin, when the two share an emotional hug. After Valentin made his exit, Peter reappeared and warned Anna to not let Valentin distract her because she has important work to do. Anna answers, “I know.”
So, what did you think of General Hospital’s 16,000 episode? What do you think is wrong with Jason? What is the important “work” that Anna has to do? Were you glad to see Sonny get a seat on the hospital board, or not so much. Weigh-in via the comment section. But first, check out the scenes on Jason and Tristan’s long flight to Port Charles.

No idea. Amazing the resemblance between Sarah Brown and Tamara Braun.
They should have done this in March of 2016, that would have been the 20th anniversary of the character Carly.
I always thought so too. You always had to look a few times. Great recast!
I love all the Carlys!!!
Awesome news. GH keeps getting better and better. Will most defiantly need to watch this episode!
Carly learns she’s a set of faternal triplets…lol. One will play the good side of Carly and one will play the bad side of Carly as she struggles with knowing it was Sonny who shot A.J.:bad Carly says dont tell and good Carly(is there such a thing) says bring that lowlife mon(b)ster down!!! They should bring back all three Heather Grants and show them in the mental hospital with each claiming to be the real Heather Grant…not only would this be funny it would also drive some anti Heather fans crazy…lmao!!!
I find your idea completely plausible. Would not be surprised if this is exactly what happens..
Great idea!
i hope it’s not one of those cameos, where they are sitting in the background or walking pass Carly. and doing a double take. They deserve something solid with words involved.
I have watched all the Carly’s thru the years but Laura Wright is my all time favorite. I love it when she is on the show.
I agree..love Laura’s Carly. Althought Sarah and Tamara are good actresses as well. Show we a good episode…Frank/Ron play so much to GH rich history..love it!
They should have included Maura West too. She was also a Carly -just on another soap.
There was actually another Carly b4 L.W…she wasnt the best but y not include all 4 unless the actress wouldnt agree to do it!!!
The Carly b4 L.W. was on a very short time because she was terrible! Don’t need her in this special 51st anniversary episode!
@jmh the #3 Bransford Carly MB/Sonny did everything in the world to save her job he felt she was beginning to grow into the part I wish I still had that interview. LW has a tendency to be awfully loud and I don’t think she has chemistry with MB. Never a big fan of the Carly character because no matter who has played her she always was on 4 to 5 days a week.
That would’ve been funny to see Maura photobomb the photo, as an *honorary* Carly from another soap. Plus, she and SJB worked together on ATWT when Sarah was Julia.
Can’t wait! It’s a great idea, especially for an April 1 episode.
It’s April Fools Day, and the fool here is Sonny! 🙂
loved Sarah Brown, She was the best, dont really like Laura only because she is always loud
IA, even when she whispers-lol. I think Sarah Brown portrayed Carly best, but I loved her as Claudia. They need to bring her back from the dead-her and Faith Roscoe. The two baddest b*tches on there!
Totally agree! Claudia should be one of the “dead” that Victor Cassadine has, ready to be revealed in an upcoming storyline. She’s back & out for blood! Watch your back Sonny! 🙂 (He was out of line the way he treated her @ the party, when he pushed her over the edge! But if Sonny goes over the edge, he gets comforted/encouraged/excused. His fam/friends fall all over themselves to pacify him! Poor pitiful Sonny, let’s hold your hand & make excuses for you while we condem everyone else! Gag-worthy indeed!)
And Faith can help Claudia to settle the score, while taking Rick down a few pegs – hee hee!
Multiple personality Carlys. The good, the bad, and the sexy.
Sarah Brown was the best Carly. Please fire Laura Wright, and rehire Sarah Brown. Laura is just not Carly to me. That’s my opinion.
I’ll second that opinion. Sarah Brown is the best actress ever to grace daytime! Please let them get her back full-time! She is sorely missed! GH isn’t the same without her!
Actually, I think Sarah Brown did well as Claudia Zacchara. It would be great if they could find a way to bring her back from the dead, and then hire Tamara Braun as Nina Clay! Imagine that LOL
I agree….Sarah Brown was spot on as Claudia Zacchara. I did like her originally as Carly, but the character has evolved and I like Laura Wright the best for this role.
But if there is a way for them to bring Claudia Zacchara back I would LOVE THAT!! I LOVED her in this role and was really sad that it wasn’t taken further.
I heard that Michelle Stafford is joining GH….my favorite actress of all time …..if that is the case, she would be the perfect age to play Nina Clay ( whom I do not believe is dead).
A lot of people share your opinion.
sarah rocked as both carly and claudia, i would take her back in a second as claudia, and tamara would be great playing a new character too, better yet if somehow sarah and tamara could play sisters/family. as for laura, love her too. my mind wold explode if somehow these three actresses were on the show all at the same time. i say bring them back..
LOVE IT!
Luv surprises..
RC always gives us some sort of excitement ..
It will be fun to have the 3 together, a first/never done before ..
( Laura Wright is my fav Carly)
Brilliant. I still think Tamara Braun was the best Carly. They found a way to get Sarah Brown to play a different character, certainly they can get Tamara back somehow, only don’t paint her into a corner as quickly/poorly as they did Claudia….
What if Tamara Braun is brought on as Nina Clay? She fits the role well and I could see an interesting connection developing between her and her mother, Madeline, who is being played excellently by Donna Mills.
I think Tamara Braun looks too young to be Nina Clay. Isn’t Nina supposed to be older than Silas?
I believe Nina could still be alive and if she is, Tamara is one of the actresses id like to see in the part!!!
one day of tamara and sarah is not enough, i want them back full time, and i love sarah as claudia, i know some people say her run as claudia wasn’t “sucessfull” but i disagree, she was great, and tamara could play her sister, or cousin. it would be insane to have these two on the show at the same time.
Awesome! I guess most actors do like working at GH.
I love all three actresses. I did not watch GH when Sarah Brown or Tamara Braun were Carly, but I watched Sarah Brown as Claudia and Tamara Braun as Ava Vitali on DAYS and I think they are fantastic actresses, as is Laura Wright.
I would love to see Sarah Brown back as Claudia and ideally, Tamara Braun as Nina Clay. It would be fun to see the Claudia/Ric interaction and I think Tamara Braun and Donna Mills would be great in scenes together as mother/daughter, just like Maura West and Ilene Kristen are as Ava and Delia.
Id LOVE to have Brown back as Claudia. Though that’d completely screw up Michael’s whole story as a murderer/inmate ect…..but if it’d get her back, suppose it’d be worth it. Lol. And would hopefully get Johnny back. But I do agree, Braun as Nina WOULD be great!
But ,regardless, having them both back, if even for an episode is worth it!
I wouldn’t want any of this. I want AJ not to die and all these new characters to take a hike. GH has just become a ridiculous joke.
Agree with you, Harry!!!! All of Ron’s superstunts are wearing thin….today’s show was absolutely ridiculous. Between AJ’s unnecessary and heartbreaking death and the lascivious Luke-A-Like’s appalling use of the nose candy, I was left just completely disgusted. About the only place we part company is on the subject of Dr. O….I love the shady lady and her evil ways.
Laura Wright is the best Carly. She has the best chemistry with Sonny. She has chemistry with everyone including the other women on the show. She’s a fantastic actress.
I think Vanessa Marcil has the best, but I enjoyed Tamara and Sarah’s chemistry with MB. I think Laura Wright had the best chemistry with Jax/IR or RH when he was Todd.
VM definitely had the best chemistry with Sonny/MB. No question about it.
Should be fun. I just hope that Carly will do the right thing and turn her thug ex-husband, Sonny, in for the attempted murder of AJ.
I’m sure this is a one-time stunt. Though I’d love it if Michael ran into SJB and think its Claudia
I think Sarah Brown, Tamara Braun and Laura Wright have all been good Carly’s in their own way. I thought Jennifer Bransford did a good job for the 6 months she was Carly in 2005. It’s a great character and they’ve all played her very differently, making it their own. Will be fun to see all three actresses on screen together, as an ode to long time fans of GH.
Agreed!!!
JB sucked as Carly -Carly should have been declared dead for 6 months only to resurface with LW version.
Maybe they’ll all play Carly’s corpse in various stages of decomposition. With Mini-moobster eating their entrails and blaming it all on AJ.
LMAO! It could happen on GH!
Ron C always has a way…. He also did the “jessica’s” on OLTL, when Erin Torpey came on for an episode.
Looking forward to “the carly’s”
And the original Blair came on too. Stupid.
Stupid ? Me ? or Ron ?
have a nice day harry.
What about Jennifer Bransford??
I hheard it was only because she’s on the east coast, and the expenses wouldn’t work budget-wise. Whereas Brown and Braun are both here in LA.
Jennifer only lasted 6 months, she was a terrible actress. Jennifer was fired, I hope she took acting lessons. lmao.
I couldnt remember her name but i did mention the 4th Carly in one of my replys…J.B. either didnt want to do it or tptb just decided not to include her because she wasnt a much popular Carly and isnt well remembered in the role…she didnt last as long as any of the other 3…i thought she looked the part!!!!
She resides in NY they did not want to pay for her air fare etc. is the word going around.
Jennifer wasn’t notable enough in the role of Carly. A total mis-cast. She would’ve worked better as Alexis’ older sister.
Very cool stunt, it should be interesting to watch:)
I agree that Jennifer Bransford should be included, and will only really accept the absence if she refused to come back for it or was unavailable for other work. Every other Carly recast had a break from the previous Carly’s tenure before starting, but Jennifer had to hit the ground running (I believe) the very next day, which might have worked against her. I think she did a fine job and could have been a great hard-edged, intense Carly. I remember she did a lot of all-out fight scenes with Kelly Monaco and Kari Wuhrer. Bransford got a bum deal as Carly and six months is hardly enough time to really grow into a role as popularized for years by two other actresses. Braun wasn’t well liked as quickly either after Sarah Brown vacated.
Anyway, as for HOW they’ll use them, I’d actually like to see Sonny play the confrontation scenes with all three of them as Carly in different scenes, it could even bounce back and forth WITHIN the scene, line by line. It IS April Fools episode, they could have a lot of fun in the editing. Little silent cameos would hardly be worth it, let’s actually see all of them AS Carly, doing intense, big scenes with Maurice Benard, especially since it involves AJ, who was a big force throughout all the Carly runs (even though Billy Warlock was the only one to work with all three of them as Carly… I think? Did Warlock work with Wright? Maybe he only worked through Bransford when Michael supposedly smothered AJ to death with a pillow and then it turned out to be Dr. Asher Thomas…)
THANK you, David! Anyone who thinks Jenny Bransford wasn’t a good actress, I don’t know what they were watching. I loved Tams and Sarah intensely as Carly, but Jenny won me over instantly. (With Tamara, though she became my favorite, it took many months.) Yes, she started the day after Tams’ last day. She had great chemistry with Maurice, her Carly was tough and funny, AND she had to play a mental breakdown. She was fantastic. A lot of us campaigned for her to stay. I think they claimed unpopularity, but she got the axe because Pratt said when he watched her on-screen he didn’t want to f**k her. Doubtful they asked her back, but if she popped up for five seconds towards the end, I would jump up and down!
OMG, why not bring them back as new characters? sarah and tamara would make great sisters. although the idea is great, its going to make fans miss the two previous gals even more, their talent is to great for a one day episode. bring them back full time, thats my wish. of course as new characters, sarah can come back as claudia, which was a great bad girl and would totally give ava a run for her money. i’m overwhelmed thats all i can say.
This has got to be one of the most idiotic ideas Ron has come up and this is saying a lot since he is the man who made James Franco come back to life as Todd, er, I mean, Roger Hayworth. Having the three actresses who played Carly appear in one scene intrudes the idea of reality into the realm of fantasy. Just a really stupid idea.
ICAM..I actually think he’s ‘mocking’ Carly and by extension GH. It’s all just a game to him…all stunts…no depth, no respect for the actors or the characters. He’s just saying “Look everybody, all the Carlys are here”. It serves no purpose whatsover.
How’d Ron like it ABC decided to bring back Guza and let him ‘guest write’ a few scenes here and there? This way everyone can compare the skill of their writing to each other? I wonder how’d he feel?
I agree with you. I don’t know that I have ever known of a person in show business with less class (talk about school being out)… maybe Alec Baldwin…
Lol, so multiple characters back from the dead is realistic?? Or ftrozen characters ?? What realm of reality or fantasy are you on???
I love this idea! I really loved Tamara Braun as Carly. I thought her portrayal of Carly brought some sensitivity to the role.
I hope this cameo isn’t tacky or anything. i’d rather see SJB come back as Claudia or something. And Tamara Braun either as someone new, or a recast of Courtney / Emily / Liz’s sister, Sarah. But I’m happy to see the three Carlys finally together at once. But Laura IS Carly for me.
Awesome and Surprise!!!!!!! 🙂
This is cool…I like it & I like all three actresses as Carly..I am sure it will be an interesting episode..I’ll just enjoy it & not read too much into it..after all soaps to me are like a bubble bath..an escape…..
I enjoyed the first two Carly’s but the second one was more fiesty.
I heard they are doing a spin off called sonny’s angels. It starts on April 1st and runs for only one episode.
April fools day! But seriously one day is not enough, the idea is great to celebrate the show anniversary but I wish they were coming back full time.
oh oh, bad news for Sonny against 3 Carlys and boy, u r in deep trouble, Maurice!! LOL
just kidding.. I love all Carlys. Carly going after Sonny who shot A.J. when Sonny protect Ava and her secret that killed Connie.. How long will it be kept going like this? .. finish with Ava and her dirty secret to end of Connie’s killer. Good Luck,Maurice, you gonna need it anyway.
I think it’s awesome. They were all amazing, each brought Carly to life in a different point in time. Amazing work..love them all. Gonna be so much fun to see them again, and I’m sure they had a blast filming whatever they did! Thanks GH!
they will play customers at Carlys hotel/resturant…
They are going to all play Carly. Sonny and Carly are going to talk about their past. Flashbacks will be shown with the previous Carly’s and then it will so Sonny (present day) talking with “that” Carly.
Carly’s conscious: Devil and Angel
Oops typo!
I meant to say that, I LOVE LAURA WRIGHT
AS CARLY. That’s not to say that the others
weren’t good too, but I just
LOVE LAURA WRIGHT AS CARLY.
Sooooooooo glad they left out the short-lived crazy Carly, played by Jennifer Bransford. She was absolutely terrible! April 18 to October 5, 2005 when she was rightfully fired… making way for the fantastic Laura Wright.
So the Carly clan will be fun to watch!
LAURA WRIGHT WILL ALWAYS B THE BEST CARLY EVER !!! Love her and e way she acts, she is so good at what she does, I hope she never leaves GH;)))
