Gina Tognoni Lands The Role Of Phyllis On The Young and the Restless!

Courtesy/ABC
Big breaking news this morning! The Young and the Restless had named Michelle Stafford’s successor in the role of Phyllis! And the key part goes to … none other than former Guiding Light (Ex-Dinah) and One Life to Live (Ex-Kelly) star, and two-time Daytime Emmy winner, Gina Tognoni!
TV Guide which broke the story goes on to say that the Y&R brass thought that Tognoni’s audition and her take on the character was “flawless!” You can look for Gina to show up as Phyllis and awaken from her coma late summer on the CBS soap!
As viewer know, Daytime Emmy winner Michelle Stafford, who had made such an impact in the role, departed the series in 2013 and signed on to play Nina Clay on General Hospital where she will begin airing in all new episodes in June!
So, what do you think about Gina Tognoni landing the role of Phyllis in one of the most hotly coveted parts in all of daytime? Do you think she will rock the part? Let us know what you think of Y&R’s casting choice!

‘Guiding Light’s’ Grant Aleksander Shares Heartfelt Remembrance of TV Daughter, Hayden Panettiere On What Would Have Been Her 37th Birthday

The tragic death of Hayden Panettiere last Sunday on August 21 continues to rock the entertainment world as her passing is still under investigation. Sadly, the former Guiding Light and Nashville star, died just days before her 37th birthday.
Now Grant Aleksander who played her on-screen father, Phillip Spaulding on Guiding Light a role he played on and off for nearly 30 years, shared a touching tribute with The Locher Room via Instagram, to his former TV daughter on her birthday on Friday, August 21.
It was back in 1996-2000 that Panettiere played the role of Phillip and Beth’s (Beth Chamberlin) daughter, Lizzie Spaulding. When Hayden was on-screen her performances were outstanding even as a little girl.

Photo: CBS
Aleksander began, When I think of Hayden the first image that comes is of her running down the hall in the studio with a huge, toothy grin on her face. Literally bursting with joy. And that’s what she gave to us. Pure, infectious joy. That and a talent that belied her years.”
“She was a natural with an instinctive understanding of acting that most adult actors can only dream of possessing. But that’s not what I’ll remember most about her. It’s that sunshine she brought to all of us that were lucky enough to be in her orbit that will stay with me, expressed Grant.
He concluded with, “I’ll always cherish the years I got to be her tv Dad. I wish I could have seen her one more time just to tell her how proud I was of her. She’s left us way too soon. We can only hope that she’s finally found the peace that eluded her in her short life. Rest in peace Princess!”
Michael Fairman TV previously shared emotional tributes from many of Hayden’s co-stars here, plus Jonathan Jackson (ex-Lucky, GH and ex-Avery, Nashville) who wrote a beautiful tribute to his former co-star.
So, do you remember the scenes between a young Lizzie and Phillip on Guiding Light? What did you think of Grant Aleksander’s words? Let us know via the comment section below. Here’s just a sampling below, of how great Hayden was with her scene partner, Grant.

Hayden Panettiere Remembered: ‘Guiding Light’ and More Stars Mourn Her Loss in Wake of Tragic Death

Tributes continue to pour in from the entertainment and soap opera community, and especially from former co-stars of Hayden Panettiere, who died on Sunday at the age of 36.
Panetierre was best-known to soap fans for her roles as as a young Lizzie Spaulding on Guiding Light and Sarah Roberts on One Life to Live, and as an adult in ABC’s music city primetime soap opera, Nashville where she starred as Juliette Barnes opposite General Hospital alum, Jonathan Jackson (ex-Lucky, GH and ex-Avery, Nashville).
As previously reported, Panettiere died on Sunday afternoon, August 16 in a home in Greenville, South Carolina. The coroner released an official statement on Monday, which read in part “no signs of trauma were discovered that would have contributed to the death. The cause and manner of death remain pending further investigation and the completion of additional studies.” First responders rushed to the scene after a 911 call about a woman who was unresponsive from an overdose and in cardiac arrest.

Now below, check out some of the heartfelt remembrances for the extraordinarily talented, Hayden Panettiere from several of her Guiding Light co-stars and more. Michael Fairman TV will continue to add to the list of tributes throughout the next few days as they become available, as well as keep you updated on any further developments in Panettiere’s death.
Beth Chamberlin (Beth Raines, GL): “Hayden played my daughter for 3 years. She was the most brilliant child actor I’ve ever seen. The things she could do, the way she could remember 20+ pages of dialogue, day after day. Even on days where the director would come out between dress and tape and make huge cuts to the scenes, Hayden, never once forgot a line or missed her blocking. The adults would, but not Hayden. I felt blessed to work with her. And always perfect in her playing of the scene.”
Connie Britton (Rayna James, Nashville): “This was Hayden. Bursting with brilliance, shining so bright. I have no words for this sad song. Just heartbreak.
I love you girl. Sleep easy now. 💔”
Tina Sloan (Lillian Raines, GL): “Hayden Panettiere was my granddaughter on Guiding Light. She died at 36 and was such a star.”
Rebecca Budig (ex-Michelle Bauer, GL, now Taylor, B&B): “I remember working alongside her..loved her and her family. She and Beth were spectacular together. So sad for her family and those who knew and loved her.”
Karla Mosley: (Dani Dupree, BTG) “This is awful awful news. Blessings to her soul and all who loved her.”

Bethany Joy Lenz: (ex-Michelle Bauer, GL) “There is nothing that posting pictures on the internet can do. I avoid it usually in moments like this. But Im here with my head in my hands and I don’t know what else to do in aside from praying for her soul, which I have done and will continue. I’m crushed. I knew the wild little blonde. Was she nine? Ten? I was eighteen. She ran through the Screen Gem studio hallways at 222 E44th St. laughing and playing games in between Guiding Light blocking and camera rehearsals. Long, unruly curls trailing behind her. She knew her lines and everyone else’s. Her intelligence was astonishing. She understood scenes and nuance and human struggle like no child I’d ever seen on camera. And she’d sit with you for a great conversation, then giggle and go play. We’d connect on and off over the years, like the cousin in the family reunion who got famous and life moved her away—but I always felt such joy seeing her when we were lucky enough to cross paths. We’d make a pact to talk soon. Lunch. Dinner. Somewhere we could curl up into a corner—but we never quite made it happen. I mostly stayed up to date through mutual friends.”
Lenz continued, “I don’t understand how this is real. Everything seemed to be turning around. She was coming BACK to life, wasn’t she? It’s too young and there’s still so much more life. And her daughter…. Hayden, you are surround by love. I’m sorry for every moment I didn’t reach out or check in. This can’t be real. These are moments of how I knew you, in glimpses over 26 years. I don’t know how to process this. I am praying for you to know the peace of God now and always.”
Brittany Snow: (ex-Daisy Lemay, GL) “I was lucky enough to play your sister for 3 years. I related to you so much in so many ways. Ways that I never even told you. Your talent was remarkable & so was your determination to be a bold, bright shining light. And you were. Always supportive, curious, funny and brave. You will always be remembered undoubtedly for your undeniable strength and spirit 💔.”

Charles Esten (ex-Deacon Clayborne, Nashville): Patty (Esten’s wife) and I are stunned and saddened at the loss of our dear and beautiful friend Hayden. I will never forget the first time I met her. In a sound stage office in Hollywood, I was finishing up my very first NASHVILLE audition. I had read two Deacon scenes before pulling out my guitar and singing two songs. I said my goodbyes and, hoping I’d done well, went to open the door to leave. Instead of swinging all the way out, the door bumped into somebody. Kinda hard.”
“To my complete surprise, It was Hayden Paniettiere, who – in full Juliette Barnes mode – had been listening with her ear to the door. Instead of looking even a little bit caught, her face instantly bloomed into the most beautiful smile. Eyes twinkling, she clapped her hands and said, “That was so good!!” I can promise you that in that moment, there was nothing in the world I needed to hear more than that. I told her that, along with my HEROES-watching family, I was already a big fan of hers, and that I was grateful for the very kind words. It was her turn to go in, so as I went to leave, I said a jokingly cocky, “See you on the set!”
“I was, of course, many auditions away from landing that incredible role. But when I finally did, and showed up in Nashville to start work, she walked right up to me, pointed in my face, and with that magical grin said, “See you on the set!” From there, we became fast friends, working very hard to play those 2 troubled Nashvillians, but always having fun and laughing a whole lot along the way. She was, of course, extraordinarily talented, infusing her larger-than-life character with all the heart, charisma, humor, whip-smart intelligence, and flat-out magic that were, alongside whatever troubles and pain she carried, a part of her own personal palette. What a great gift it was to act with her, sing with her, and to just be her friend. She was always extremely kind to my family, especially my wife, Patty, who I’m certain she liked even more than me.”
Together, we are heartbroken that she is gone, and praying for her family, and for all those who, like us, will miss and mourn her so dearly. God bless you, Hayden.
Rest In Peace and Light ❤️
Emme Rylan: (ex-Lizzie Spaulding, GL et al.)” So very sad. Rest in peace sweet soul.”
Bryan Craig: (ex-Morgan, GH) posted a text exchange via his Instagram story he had with Panettiere where they laughed about her making fun of his hat. He wrote: “Love you Hayden. Rest in peace Angel.” Craig later added, “Cherish the moments with people you love and care about. As cliche as it sounds. Send that text, get that cup of coffee, tell them you love them and you’re proud of them. You may not get the chance again.”

HAYDEN PANETTIERE RELEASED MEMOIR EARLIER IN 2026
Back on May 19, 2026, Hayden released a memoir titled This Is Me: A Reckoning, which talked about her struggles from childhood to adulthood in front of the camera and off including her battles with alcohol and pill addiction, postpartum depression and more.

He was only 28 at the time of his death. Hayden told PEOPLE that she would never be able to get over her brother’s death, citing, “No matter how many years go by, I will never get over his loss.”

This was my choice!!! So happy to have you big on TV Gina.. Missed you!
To bad she isn’t playing Nina on GH, much better then what we got
What’s with all the trash talk?
I do think Gina Tognoni could have made a good Nina on GH but i think they always wanted Michelle Stafford in the role.Plus no matter who we want playing a character at the end of the day the decision is not ours to make.
Somebody obviously doesn’t watch Y n R so stop he trash talk.
OH PLEASE LEAVE PHYLLIS IN A COMA> ENOUGH
First time on. have been watching Y&Rsince it first day. What is Phy;;is doing now, will she be back? She is one of best, Also Will the original Adam be returning ? He is the the Match for Victor, whom I love>
Gina! Why not? She was a great spitfire of a character as Kelly Cramer. Can’t wait to see her interact with Josh Morrow, Sharon Case,Cay McClain and Peter Bergman!
She won an Emmy for her portrayal of Dinah Marler on GL, and the (2) characters are very similar in nature. I think she’ll be great – although she has VERY big shoes to fill.
From what I’ve read here, Michelle Stafford is already riveting in her role of Nina on GH (as I knew that she would be). Hats off to both of these exquisite actresses – and a big congrats to both on their new roles!
No I don’t want Phyllis back!!!
very NICE read!
it’s always hurry up and wait
for the gala (LOVE) affair with soaps to present themselves…. to our liking…. or much to our chagrin….
be that as it may… once you’re hooked… its always on
I would have rather had Gina play the role of Nina on General Hospital !
I was thinking the same thing! She seems more suited to Sam & Silas.
Me too…
Oh yes……….
I never watched OLTL. Did she ever play opposite Michael Easton on that soap?
Yes – and they were very hot.
Sort of… she play Kelly Kramer, Dorian’s niece. Started dating Joey Buchanan…and had non romantic involvements with John McBain, aka Michael Easton.
Excellent choice! Can’t wait to see her take on Phyllis.
She is way too young. Peter Bergman is going to be 61. She’d be better cast as his daughter.
Ah, but he barely looks fifty. Most of these soap actors, be they male or female, seem kind of ageless.
I know. She is too young. Cassie DePavia would have been ideal but she is miscast on Days as Eve Donavon..I wish Days and Y&R could trade actresses. Gina could play Eve.
I’m happy that Gina Tognoni has been cast as Phyllis and i’m also sure she will do a great job.Plus i’m glad that Y&R hired a veteran actress and a past Emmy winner in the role.Plus since Phyllis has been in a coma for a year or so that could be a good way to explain any behavior changes in the character.
A great choice. Hopefully, the writing team will rise to the occasion…
That would be nice, but I don’t see it happening with the current writers.
@Susan I totally agree with you. The stories and pace are not very good right now. I have 10 episodes waiting for me on my TiVo but I really have to desire to watch them. That hasn’t happened to me in a very long time.
Always liked her as an actress this tells me their probably is not going to be a mention of her being a grandma! Lol I also do not think you will see a visit from Daniel and we will probably have a NIck, Sharon & Phyllis triangle again I do not see her with PB. This show is struggling so bad I do not think bringing this character back is going to help wish her good luck however.
If you look at my screen name, I obviously know Gina Tognoni and think she is an excellent actress. I definitely wish her good luck with the part. I do have to agree with you. Y&R is struggling to put it mildly.
She is a terrific choice–she is a little spit fire. I suspect I will like her interpretation of Phyllis better than Stafford’s. I do wish the writing team would pick it up.
Watching Y&R is like watching my Chia Pet head grow these days.
Oh trust me I loved her as Kelly Cramer and she was a good Dinah on GL I just have a problem with the age but will see. I just remember MAB when she cast Maura West as Dianne total disaster. JFP has a problem with women over 40 and that offends me.
My sister seems to think with this casting that they are going to take her out of Jack’s orbit and maybe even put her in a triangle with Avery & Dylan. Any thoughts??
Maybe Steve will come back to play Jason… Y&R sux.
The only reason Burton went to Y&R is because he’s a friend of JFP. Since she gives him everything he wants, he’ll probably be there as long as she is, or at least as long as he has that preferred 3-day filming schedule.
She is almost a decade behind Phyllis lol! I don’t see her with Jack either, GT could pass for his daughter, if ppl thought Neil and Hilary was bad. I also see her in a triangle with Shick or even with Davery lawd knows they need something! Can’t wait to see what she does with the role.
I love her! Y&R made a smart choice. I just wish she was coming to GH instead of Michelle Stafford.
GT is a great choice and can act. Prefer her over MS and wish MS wasn’t on GH. Don’t buy into the MS hype at all.
Cathy–me either! The Empress has no clothes in my opinion.
DITTO. Never got the “love” for MS.
surprised but happy. thought they would of taken a blonde instead but perfect choice. shes good !
Why? Phyllis wasn’t a natural blonde. Plus, she was a brunette when Michelle Stafford was last in the role.
I thought Phyllis was always a red head which is why Jack always called her “Red”?
Great love Gina, hell of actress
I couldn’t agree more, Dinah. May tune back in to see her arrival. 🙂
While I would’ve preferred for Sarah Joy Brown to be cast as nuPhyllis, I am of fan of Gina’s body of work in daytime, and I do believe that she will excel greatly in the role. Plus, I feel like she’ll open new opportunities for Phyllis’ connections with several players on the Genoa City canvas! I cannot wait for her debut. I hope people give her a chance before being their usual judgmental selves.
I also hope people give Gina Tognoni a chance before judging her and try not to compare her to Michelle Stafford because they are 2 different kind of actresses.
So agree with you on Sarah Brown. Also think Gina will do fine. Just really had my hopes up for Sarah. Wonder if she even submitted for role.
I hope the same thing, Andrew. I bet she can win them over as Phyllis just as Kassie (Blair from OLTL) will win over the Days fans as Eva.
I would have liked to see Sarah Brown or Jamie Lunar. However, I have never seen Gina’s acting so am interested to see what she does with the character. I loved Michelle Stafford in the part, but that’s what it is, a part. Gina will probably be just fine. I think the one they are really going to have trouble with is the recast of Adam Newman.
Sarah Brown, Jamie Luner, Kimberlin Brown, ex-Skye (AMS/GH); Susan Haskell ex-Marty Saybrooke OLTL – all the right age to play Phyllis. However, my favourite would have been Cassie DePavia (ex- Blair OLTL) who is very ill cast as Evan Donnavon on Days.
Yes Yes ex miss dinah Marler Guiding Light is the new Phyllis, great choice, she is a terrific actress. My prediction was right, I said in recent posts Gina should make an excellent Phyllis, abd I was right. Congrats Gina I will be watching you on the young and the restless.
I meant, and I was right Lol.
what a great choice! she will do very well! love her work on other soaps! can play good girl or bad girl!
Great choice! Loved her in Guiding Light! Can ‘t wait! Hey Michele chose to leave. Gina, you go girl!
Can’t wait love Phyllis and Gina should rock it!
Way to go, Gina! I remember Gina just starting out on OLTL as rebellious Kelly Cramer. I think the character started with green or purple hair? Hearing this makes me miss GL, back in the day, from the 90’s-when I used to watch it in high school.
Awesome! My first pick! Love Gina! Now if only they would they would pick Trevor St. John for Adam!
She wasn’t my first but she was definitely up there, she has the acting chops for the role and she looks more like Avery’s sister than Michelle did.
And I 100% agree about TSJ as Adam! He’s definitely my first pick for that role
Avery is boring me, and by the way, Kelly Sullivan was younger than both Maurice and Lisa but they made it work! And Peter looks damn good for his age (which is a year behind mine)!
Good for her. Liked her on OLTL. Will she dye her hair or will the nickname Red be retired?
Michelle Stafford has brown hair the last time we saw her yet Jack still called Phyllis ‘Red.’ And personally, I can’t see her as a love interest for Jack anymore, Michelle Stafford and Peter Bergman were so amazing together, I can’t imagine the same chemistry will be recaptured with PB and GT. Just like how David Tom and Amelia Henile don’t have nearly the same chemistry she had with Billy Miller, and because of that their relationship is falling apart. I think the same will happen with Jack and ‘Red,’ also because of his current relationship with Kelly. BTW Cady McClain is doing VERY well in the role!
Yes she is, Jimmy. Cady is working the hell out of this part and Peter Bergman seems to be just glowing again. No matter who is playing Phyllis, I don’t want Jack reunited with her. I always felt that Jack was Phyllis’s second choice. It’s nice to see Jack with a woman who appreciates him for who he is.
@Harry
well said… on Phyllis treating jack like second fare
his character didn’t deserve that!
I thought their on-screen chemistry, TOGETHER, sizzled
Well Jack did tell Kelly his nickname for Phyllis wasn’t really about her hair color but for her fiery temperament- being passionate and a spit fire— so the nick name still applies–
Now, what about Adam??!!
My thoughts exactly! It was pretty clear they were going to recast him when MM was fired, so have they found anyone yet? Hopefully it will be Trevor St. John or another actor of that caliber because Adam is a central character who drives stories, so the actor portraying him has to be up to that standard, as well as the standard that Michael Muhney has set for the character.
It wouldn’t surprise me if the next major casting news we hear from Y&R is that they have hired a new actor to play Adam. However they may wait a few weeks before announcing it because they may not want it to overshadow this news.
Wasn’t too sure but I think she will make a great Phyllis!
She and Avery will finally look like sisters at least.
Love her, but isnt she too young?
Definitely could be worse and she definitely has the chops for it.
I have to say I agree the first thought that came to mind about Gina that, she is two young to play the role of Phyllis. I love Gina’s work as Kelly Cramer and I know she has the abilities to bring a character to life, so I am hoping to buy her as Phyllis when she makes her debut.
Im PICKLED TINK for my birthday twin! She will be great, & not for nothing, she looks more like Avery’s sister now!
I am glad they are finally bringing back Phyllis. She is an important part of the show. Gina is as good a choice as any. I can’t wait for her to tell what really happened with Sharon. I vaguely Gina her from OLTL which I stopped watching years ago.
Since they are replacing Phyllis then Gina Tognoni is a good choice, but still…??
Not enthused. No one will be Phyllis in my book but the tough broad who created her, Michelle Stafford. They should just write her out of town, IMO.
Great news, I predicted Gina would be the new phyllis Summers Abbott. Great casting she has won 2 daytime emmys, Gina is 40 years old, and she is a wonderful actress.
Michelle Stafford is Phyllis..
Gina Tognoni will never be Phyllis – fail ..
Michelle Stafford made Phyllis her own / not replaceable
Michael M made Adam his own , not replaceable..
Billy Miller made Billy Abbott his own, new Billy is a fail..
Y&R recasting 3 powerful stars who made their characters their own, is a bad move, all 3 replacements will fail ..
(New Kelly is a fail-blahh)
also- I did not like Gina Tognoni as Kelly on OlTL.. lol ..
Soon, there will be no saving Y&R 🙁
Almost no one is irreplaceable in daytime. And it’s ironic that the two actors you mention (Muhney and Miller) were recasts who were given a chance by the fans and showed what they could do with their roles. Let’s hope Y&R viewers keep open minds and see what Gina Tognoni brings to the table. She certainly has shown her acting chops on other soaps with memorable roles. Judging her before she even airs is just counterproductive.
I agree with your post the best sonniorsolita..All this negative people making predictions without knowing a peep about anything, lol.
Everywhere Ms Gina goes, she has given riveting performances, hence her 2 daytime emmy wins..Love her..I was thinking they will replace Phyllis with a fairly unknow actress, but glad they got her.
YR has had to replace irreplaceable talent for years. It’s the nature of the business.
Since Stafford can’t come back, it was time to recast this important role.
Soooooooo glad it wasn’t any of those old GH names being tossed about. Whew!
Gina was good as Dinah on Guiding Light, so I’m sure she’s THRILLED to be back on the #1 soap on the #1 Daytime network.
Can’t wait to see her in the role.
Now Y&R is replacing fans!
Oh please, give her a chance. YOU sound so negative, gina is one hell of an actress. The lady can act, she will be a terrific Phyllis.
Su0000 is not a YR fan, but posts just to bash.
Some sort of jealousy issue with their ratings dominance…
Monica, chuckling at your post. But yes, this is FABULOUS choice. She might even be better than Michelle Stafford. As you said, let’s give her a chance.
I am a Y&R fan..
I bashed nobody..
I said all 3 recasts will fail..
New Kelly and Billy prove my point 🙂
Being a good actress has nothing to with it.. It has to do with being Phyllis..
Gina Tognoni will never be Phyllis – MS is phyllis and GT will not be the same Phillis..
(comprehension is key 🙂
Monica-
I never said anything about Gina’s acting, never mentioned it…
I said- in essence she will not and can not be Phillis she will be ‘a’ Phillis but not thee Phyllis..
I was big Phyllis fan.. there is no replacing her in my world..
My Philis is gone Gina will be a different Phyllis ..
But what can ya do lol ..
That’s right, Monica! Seems to be a Negative Nancy in the house. Remember, Michelle Stafford was replaced once before by actress Sandra Nelson. She was a pretty good recast but when Michelle wanted to return they gave the part back.
When Michelle Stafford returned to Y&R in 2000 her replacement Sandra Nelson had been off the show for a bit.So it wasn’t like Michelle immediately came back and took back the character of Phyllis from her.
You don’t watch Y&R – you’ve said so in several GH threads. So since it doesn’t matter to you what do you care?
SuOO, the reason I was chuckling is because when anyone deigns to be critical of GH, you call that person, negative, mean, bitter, with nothing better to do with their time. In fact, you have even question our sanity. You have a history of it. I have been on the other end of your name calling and it’s rather maddening.
Having said, that, you are fully entitled to express your negative view points about Y&R without being called names. But please remember what is good for the gander is good for the goose. In other words, learn something from this.
Well said ! I agree.
I have to disagree with you on the Kelly recast….Cady has made that role so much better…and Gina will also be a successful recast of Phyllis.
Gina was beloved on Guiding Light as Dinah, but is way to young as Phyllis. Michelle Stafford is 48 years old, Gina is 40, They should have cast Jamie Luner or Robin Christopher. But i will watch and give Gina a chance. Gina is a great actress. I did like her on Guiding Light.
People need to remember the actor’s age has nothing to do with the character’s age. According to the history of the show, the character Phyllis came to GC in 1994 and was twenty years old at the time, which means Phyllis is supposed to be 40.
For me the real problem is they SORASed both of the character’s children that there is no way a forty year old Phyllis, would have a child in his thirties. Daniel should only be twenty and Summer should only be eight. So what is silly is they SORASed the kids but the parents don’t age with them– and that is why any actress who is the same age Phyllis should be would look too young.
I agree with you Mary…most do forget the age think…i remember on Days when 30something Susan Seaforth was playing Julie and they SORASed her son David who return to Salem played by 20something Richard Gutherie and l always thought Julie looked way too young to have a son that age…she did look slighly older when she shorten her hair but in the end it really didnt bother me like it has some others…Susan and Richard had great chemistry together as mother and son which helped make it work…back in the 60s the actress who played Ellen on ATWTs was only 5 years older than the actor who played her son Dan and audiences accepted it…im certain Gina will do great in the part…i watched her for years when she was Kelly on OLTL!!!
Mary, you are quite right. Erica Kane taught us that age is irrelevant in soap land. We never heard Erica’s grandchildren call her grandma and we got to see her daughters age into their 30’s which Erica remained forever twenty-nine.
I miss Erica.
Although I don’t watch Y&R I am very happy for Gina and wish he much success in the recast role. Cheers!
I don’t think Gina looks old enough to play Phyllis a mother with a daughter in her late teen early twenty!
That age difference is really pushing it. If this goes and she’s successful by the time Michelle Stafford decides to return to Y&R (and she will) it will be a bit jarring. She’s going to come on looking Chelsea’s age. Not quite sure why they couldn’t do a proper talent search instead of a search your mind and choose an actress from all the shows we’ve helmed. Kelly Menighan-Hensley ex-Emily ATWT is the spot on age for this character and they could have at least given her a go at it. I’m flummoxed as to what is going on over there at Y&R.
the age difference bothers me when there are so many other talented actresses who are the right age to play Phyllis.
Never saw her previous work which might actually help me see her as nuPhyllis rather than any other character she used to play. However before deciding if this is good or bad casting I will have to see her in the role, see her connection to the other characters on screen and see how the writers write for her. I am hoping they made the right choice, because Y&R has lost a lot of talent this year, it would be a refreshing change to see them get some new talent.
I think Gina will do great.
Michelle who?
Michelle who….AMEN!!
LOL!! I googled 2014 images for Kelly-Menighan Hensley and there’s a photo of Gina Tognoni right smack next to Kelly’s. Kelly looks fantastic and she should have been chosen.
I like Gina Tognoni and the roles she played on GL & OLTL but, cannot see her playing a grandmother. Also, surprised because I know she lives in Hoboken, NJ and had started a shoe company. Plus, thought her husband had business(s) based in NYC. So, her willingness to relocate to LA is surprising…unless she got a Steve Burton deal where she only has to be in LA a few days a month.
Gina Gina welcome back to daytime, you will rock as Phyllis. In the 1990s. Abby Dalton played phyllis mom. Please recast with Marj Dusay ex Alex GL or Elizabeth Hubbard ex Lucinda AS THe world turns. Both of them are excellent actresses. Phyllis needs her mother in Genoa City.
Am salivating for Marj or Elizabeth to be back on screen.
I’d vote:
Donna Mills as Lydia Summers, the mother of Phyllis and Avery.
Elizabeth Hubbard as Dina Abbott Mergeron, the mother of Jack, Ashley and Tracy
Both soaps got great actresses. Congrats to the actresses
Nice! Hoping she’s as good as I’ve been hearing and can pull off phyllis… Rooting for an italian/american actress regardless! Forza Gina!
I was hesitant to think Phyllis could be recast due to Michelle building such a great character. I think Gina will be a good choice. My God bring back Billy Miller!!!!! MM was so great as Adam. Too bad differences could not be worked out. It seems as though Phelps is killing Y&R and it is like watching a slow painful train wreck. I wish someone would oust her and the show could actually be good again. All the characters that were great were either fired or left. Hmmmmm. Now the show is filled with BORING characters like Lily and Devon. Boring cast, boring stories, snoozefest! Now Chloe is going? My God. She was the firey one along with Phyllis that made stories fun. It takes me about 6 min. to watch the show on FFW. Been watching 23 years and have never seen it suck this bad ever!!!!!!!!
Oh leave Devon and Lily alone. Abby, Kevin, Dylan are boring, so why pick on just those 2?
Well…she is a little young for this role. That said…I love her and I am sure they have ways of making her look older. It will be nice for her to have a role on a show in no danger of being cancelled as the last 2 shows she was on were. Way to go GiTo!!
Love OLTL’s Cramer Women! Gina Tognoni and Kassie DePaiva are both great actresses. However, I am starting to think that GT should have been cast as Eve on DAYS and KP as Phyllis on YR.
LOL
funny…. read “JustSaying” idea…
as a DAYS fan… I am so looking forward to how much heat, interest, intrigue, pull, ratings, fan laud, that Kassie DePaiva will generate for DAYS
I never watched OLTL… watched her some on nuOLTL and GH… and was smitten…
I hope she’s on DAYS for the long haul… and for as long as she wants
Ditto Danjella. Great minds think alike. I have posted this on several other sites on here about Cassie being Phyllis and Gina, Eve.
MS left the show because she wanted to try a new soap or IDK if I know it, before the role of Phyllis was recasted, I knew KD will be the perfect Phyllis and GT will be the perfect Eve on DOOL.
Reasons why I thought they will switch roles
Their ages, KD is 53, I thought they will SORASed Phyllis for four years and making the character a southern belle. GT is 40, I knew GT is eight years younger than MS to play Phyllis
Love it! She’s a great actress and she and Avery will look much more like sisters now. Yes, she is 8 years younger than Michelle Stafford, but I still think she’ll do a great job. Age on soaps has never seemed to matter before. My only gripe is that she is better suited for the role of Nina on GH instead of MS – it’d be nice is she was returning to Y&R as Phyllis as she is the original. But, I am looking forward to GT, I just hope the writers know what they’re doing with the role and it doesn’t become a train-wreck like Maura West as Diane did back a few years ago.
This casting has also given me hope that maybe Y&R’s casting department isn’t completely incompetent, and will find a suitable actor to play Adam, like they found Gina for Phyllis. nuBilly is not cutting it, and many people agree, even though he’s the original adult portrayer. However, GT as Phyllis is a good idea, so hopefully they will find a great actor to play Adam.
Age has nothing to do with it folks.
She’s playing a character, not herself.
And so that means she could play older or younger.
Not an issue.
Cady M is 44 and they have her paired with PB.
AH was OLDER than Billy Miller.
Etc. etc.
It’s not looking good. The ship’s taking in too much water!
@4everDAYS..LOL..Amen..even the orchestra is abandoning ship!!
Pat, Gina looks too young to be a grandma and love interest for Jack and looks like Avery’s younger sister than older. Michelle looks like a 50+
She’s going to n AWESOME!!! THEY PICKED THE PERFECT ACTRESS TO PLAY NEW PHYLLIS!!!
Great choice this is who I wanted I am thrilled, okay so MS left to GH good ridden’s, yes she was great, but she left her loss.
I like that Gina got this and she will make it worth watching!
Awesome!
I am so excited! She was fabulous as Dinah on GL, which we miss every day!
Somebody was listening to the viewers! long overdue .
It’s the quality of the performance that counts. The other things I agree are not an issue. Love Gina!
Congrats to her!
God what is with Y&R? I cannot believe how much they miscast people.
Gina would have been a better replacement for Cynthia Watros (Kelly) and Cady would have been a better replacement for Michelle Stafford (Phyllis).
How did they get this backwards??????
I want wendy moniz !
AMAZING NEWS!!!!! She is so talented and was my first choice for the replacement of MS. IMO she is the one actress that will hit “Phyllis” spot on. She came on to GL as “Dinah” replacing Wendy Monitz and was Fantastic. Congrats and Good Luck Gina. Now if we can undo the firing of MM and BM. FIRE JFP!!!!
I LOVE Gina, met her at several events in NYC. I think she can do a great job…hope Y&R fans give her a while to put her face on the role. As far as being partnered with Jack…only 4 years younger than Cady. GO GINA!
