‘GMA3’ Production Team Fired By ABC; Should the Network Finally Consider Putting a Soap Opera Back in the Time Slot?
Before the weekend, ABC News gutted the staff of daytime series, GMA 3: What You Need to Know, including its executive producer Catherine McKenzie. The restructuring upshot which included getting rid of close to 200 jobs across ABC News and Disney Entertainment Networks, will now have the overworked production team in charge of Good Morning America taking over GMA3.
In the re-alignment structure, “GMA” executive producer Simone Swink will now oversee all “GMA”-branded shows across all time slots. As employees were heartbroken by the news, the NY Post reports that one staff member summed it up best by sharing, “It’s all about doing more with less. That’s what this is.”
Just a reminder for those who may not now, presently GMA3: What You Need to Know is a news, health & lifestyle program. It is hosted by Eva Pilgrim and DeMarco Morgan, and it airs weekdays on ABC at 1pm ET/12pm CT and PT.

More drama has also ensued behind the scenes when disgruntled staffers reportedly have spoken to the U.S Sun and put the blame on the demise and the firings on former GMA3 hosts Amy Robach and T.J. Holmes, who were fired for their personal relationship off-screen. “Amy and TJ got let go for being selfish two years ago, and now the rest of us are being fired in the fallout. They’ve ruined it for everyone else and now the whole staff is gone,” shared one source. According to the U.S. Sun’s report, the charisma that Robach and Holmes brought to GMA3 does not exist with its current hosts, causing less interest in the series.

So, this begs the question; isn it time for ABC to explore giving that hour back to the soaps? They currently have the rights to revitalize All My Children and One Life to Live. They could explore remounting one of these beloved soaps that were canned by then ABC Daytime president, Brian Frons on April 14, 2011 in the most shocking and dismantling move in daytime history. Once the legal battle with Prospect Park ended, the network regained the rights to both shows.
If that proves to complex, ABC could follow the path of its rival CBS, who just mounted the first new soap opera in over 25 years with Beyond the Gates who in it premiere week (with fantastic kick-off promotion) virtually tied ABC’s General Hospital in total household viewers for the week of February 24-28th, and bested the series in key demo ratings 18-49 and 25-54, Last week, GMA3 came in 11th out of 12 daytime shows for total household ratings share, according to SON.

Its a fraught situation for ABC, if they are realigning GMA3 under the GMA production wing to save dollars and tighten their ship, then a daytime drama could be seen as perhaps too expensive an entity for them to take on, unless it could be taped and be a co-branded production in the way, which has thus far been a successful model for the launch of Beyond the Gates.
So, what do you think? What should ABC do with GMA 3 at this juncture? Keep it going? Cancel it? If it cancels it, what would you want to see in its place? All My Children revival, One Life to Live revival, a new daytime drama series, or something else? Share your thoughts in the comment section below.
Finally ! A sliver of hope.
Bring back one life and All my children this would be my line up
9am Kelly & Marrk
10am Tamron Hall
11am The View
Noon Local program
1pm All My Children
2pm One Life To Live
3pm General Hospital
Yes I am with you on that one I absolutely love All My Children and One Life To Live not just because of being a huge fan of both of these shows but because of all the powerful stories that theses shows produced 5 days a week for over 40 years! And I absolutely agree that they should have GMA 3 be cancelled or be moved to another time slot so both All My Children and One Life To Live can be returned to there 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM time slots including with the ABC News Brief!
yay
I am with you bring it all my children and One Life to Live Back and Genral Hospital
I would be something new if the talk show had something new. Every daytime talk show have the very same guest talking about the very same thing. They are on GMA, TODAY SHOW, GMA3, KELLY AND MARK, KELLY CLARKSON, JENNIFER HUDSON, THE VIEW & TAMALA. The very same guest pushing their latest movie, music, and tv program.
Good grief people, LET IT GO. NOBODY is watching soaps anymore, and they are too expensive to produce. They advertised the heck out of BTG for months, nonstop, and the ratings were just ‘meh’. NOBODY will watch AMC or OLTL anymore, what is so hard? If people had been watching, they’d still be on the air.
LET. IT. GO. MOVE ON.
WhyNot – Are you super SLOW and thickheaded or did you not BOTHER to read this article in its entirety?! The article states clearly that AMC and OLTL were stupidly cancelled by Brian Frons. In fact, Brian Frons has a history of destroying and cancelling daytime soaps because he hates the soaps. Brian Frons didn’t cancel AMC and OLTL because nobody was watching the two soaps; Brian Frons cancelled the two soaps because he is a dumbass that does not care about the viewers that love the daytime soap genre. Also, it is rather ignorant of you to say that both OLTL and AMC would still be on the air if people were the two soaps since that is so not the case. AMC and OLTL are off the air solely because of Brian Frons. Please do your research before you make uninformed remarks like you just did.
I’m actually very intelligent, which is why I said it would be stupid to bring them back. Frons didn’t cancel POPULAR shows. He canceled low rated shows that cost too much to produce.
BTW your foaming at the mouth over tv shows made you type a sentence that makes no sense.
I can explain it for you, but I can’t understand it for you. Facts are still facts, even when people can’t comprehend them.
WhyNot – No, Brian Frons cancelled OLTL and AMC because his dumb self was known as a SOAP KILLER and he proved it by cancelling 4 soaps across 3 different network. Brian’s idiot self is the person who cancelled SEARCH FOR TOMORROW from CBS in 1982, and Brian stupidly cancelled SFT for a second time in 1986 when the soap was airing on NBC. Whether SFT, PORT CHARLES, OLTL, and AMC had low ratings or not, Mr. Frons made stupid decisions to kill all 4 of soaps and it not only ticked off the fans, but it ticked off the actors, as well, like Susan Lucci – who rightfully blamed Brian Frons for killing AMC.
Additionally, if AMC and OLTL were doing so poorly with their ratings and were not popular, then neither soap would have been brought back as online soaps in April 2013. Clearly, viewers still clamored for both soaps, which just proves that Frons made a bad decision by cancelling them. Worse yet, Frons replaced OLTL with a stupid talk show called THE REVOLUTION that only stayed on the air for about 7 months in 2012 in comparison to OLTL’s 43.5 years on the air. Even AMC’s talk show replacement – THE CHEW – didn’t last for long, either.
In summary, Frons was just a idiot soap killer, who had no business cancelling the two ABC soaps that he did in 2011 when fans still wanted both shows on the air, and both soaps still have huge fan bases worldwide.
Here’s a case where both of you have some correct points. Yes, Frons was not a major supporter of soaps. He reportedly wanted to cancel GH at the same time but network brass refused. Ratings for GH went up after Frank & Ron moved over from OLTL. When ABC needed a slot for Katie Couric, GH was saved due to the abysmal performance of The Revolution.
It’s also true that AMC was tanking in the ratings before the cancellation announcement. The move to LA production didn’t get the anticipated savings and quality-wise the stories (ie poisoned pancakes, killing off Stuart and Erica’s unabortion) drove away fans.
OLTL, however, was sometimes performing better in the ratings than GH. Being the last soap produced in NYC didn’t help its case – despite Frank’s budget acumen.
Frons likely started out wanting to cancel one show (OLTL), settled on two (due to AMC ratings and a deal with Prospect Park) and set the groundwork for all 3, before GH outperformed.
All the shows this man replaced the soaps with have been cancelled too. GMA3, have been revamped so many times, it ain’t funny.
Geez, You may be ‘ intelligent ‘ but you are clearly a buzz kill and its highly unlikely you re the life of the party.
Way to rain on the parade of a new soaps successful launch.
There are only 5 soaps left but a plethora of news and lifestyle magazines I’m sure you can find one to watch even if soap fans hope for the return of our old faves, at the expense of like the twentieth hour of gma! Go kiss ass to Brian Frons on some other website, read the room , I think you’ re on the wrong site( for someone so intelligent btw)
Haha.. just like Mr. Orange who also claims “very intelligent..very intelligent I am..”
Are you are serious person. Soaps are a business. Years ago they generated more money than primetime for a network. Viewers killed the soaps when cable TV was at its peak and people made other viewing choices. Executives just had to be the adult in the room to make the unpopular decisions to cancel shows. At this point AMC & OLTL are a brand and any reboot would have to have a different business model and a creative team that could compete with the many choices viewers have. While The Gates has an appealing look, I’m not sure it is original enough for the long haul.
Viewers didn’t kill the soaps, soap executives did. They weren’t the “adult in the room,” they were murderers, gleefully dealing the last blow after they’d weakened the victims to the point that they had no way to fight back.
Maybe they’ve come to their senses, maybe they haven’t; we shall see. But the programming that replaced the soaps has been a very mixed bag, some of it profitable, much of it not (even after the reduced production costs are factored in), and I’m wondering if there might be a genuine rethinking going on. Soaps didn’t always have the gigantic budgets of the 1980s, and they still got good ratings. Maybe somebody has finally had the sense to wonder why that model was abandoned.
But in any case, let’s not pretend, please, that what happened was viewers’ fault and the execs just did what had to be done. If we’re going to revisit soaps’ past to try to make arguments—either way—about what future soaps might or might not have, we have to make sure we get the history right.
If you feel that it is a dead genre, which it is not, why are you posting on a site dedicated to soaps? Why are you here?
Exactly, Gina! It makes no sense for WhyNot to be posting on a soap site if he/she/they believe that the soap genre is dead and gone. Shaking my head.
The answer is in the name “Whynot” the motive must be “why not mess with soaps I do not care about that why and why not be a troll”
“Meh” ratings, as you put it, are actually something of a victory. I’ve seen about a dozen soaps debut in the 50 years I have been watching them. All but one—Bold and Beautiful—debuted dead last, and by a hefty margin. The fact that BTG is even close to the other shows is fairly impressive. It will be interesting to see where the ratings settle in the next few months.
Exactly; for a premiere, meeting the weight of a soap 62 years on the air is major. Would I have wanted a higher turnout? Yes. But the demos were also promising (and demos are more important).
Somebody didn’t notice how great the ratings was for BTG!
No offense, but if they cannot afford to produce this, there is no way they could produce another soap opera. What they need to do is put some focus into General Hospital, put a creative team into that soap, and watch it rebound.
Sure Jan
K, Mimi.
I absolutely agree Scott!!
If CBS can team with others to produce a soap, certainly ABC could do the same.
If you are heralding the success of Beyond the Gates… let’s have a little hope for OLTL or AMC
Disney ABC should be focusing on the one soap they have right now before even considering bringing a new one to its canvas.
Well let’s just say for argument sake ABC brings one of them back… would you give it a try or is it no no no even before they get off the ground ?
If it’s One Life to Live, it’s an automatic no; I was not a fan then, didn’t like TOLN’s production, and am not interested in the idea of a relaunch. If I am being honest, I really don’t think either soap should return in the same way it is my belief that Guiding Light or As the World Turns should not return. Either way, my belief stands strong: Disney ABC should be focusing on the horrorshow their one sole daytime soap opera is right now, because it’s bad! You don’t ignore BAD to bring in something new. Either way, considering they’re cutting production team on GMA3, I doubt they’d even consider bringing forth a new soap opera.
Thanks for your thoughts.
I would love for AMC to come back! It seems there was some interest in the Kelly Ripa/Mark Conseulos primetime attempt a few years back and the news about 6 months ago that Lifetime is making a couple of movies set in Pine Valley.
Since ABC has traditionally preferred to produce, distribute, and air its daytime dramas, it’s unlikely they’d take a stab at a new soap.
BTG is has the combination of Paramount/CBS, P&G and NAACP in the mix so there’s more money in the coffers to attempt a new soap.
Bring back One Life to Live and All My Children! I stopped watching the network when they were cancelled. I don’t care about biased talk shows and opinions.
Agreed, Bring Back Soaps! I hate watching biased talk show hosts and listening to their insane opinions, too, and I would much rather watch a well-written daytime soap opera. With the addition of BEYOND THE GATES and its high ratings, this gives me some hope that maybe the ABC brass will either bring back OLTL and AMC at some point or create a new soap altogether.
Please bring back our soaps, they never should have been cancelled in the first place. If Disney isn’t going to do it then can’t the rights to the shows be given to someone else? No more news and talk shows, fans want a little escape from everything right now.
They did that with Prospect Park. We all know how that worked out.
I feel a little there should be a little forgiveness on the reboot streaming versions of both shows.. online streaming wasn’t at the stable place it is today when both shows debuted. I feel newer versions of both or at least one of them could prove successful in today’s streaming services.
I would love to see a hybrid of All My Children and One Life to Live that combines its most popular characters come on the air. It can be set in either Pine Valley or Llanview, but be a true hybrid where the core families are the Lords, Buchanans, Chandlers & Martins. Think of the star power that would bring, and imagine a world where Vicki Lord and Erica Kane were the matriarchs. It would be an incredible homage to the legacies of those shows. People would tune in for the nostalgia and stay for the excitement.
Do we really need three forms of GMA? On the week day show, I love them both, but Robin and Michael are hardly there. The weekend version is ok, but is it really needed? I like GMA3, but for ABC, it’s all about the revenue. Do a half-hour soap. It has worked for B&B, and unlike what another poster said, the soap genre is not dead. Beyond the Gates has proven that, along with DAYS being renewed by Peacock I believe for two more years and Y&R for four by CBS.
And calling it GMA3 is stupid. First, it’s NOT the morning when they air it and Second, they’re just trying to piggyback on the name of Today’s 3rd Hour – which is directly after their first two hours.
With a built-in audience, why would Hulu not want to bring a show like AMC back? It seems to be working for DOOL on Peacock and I am sure more people have Hulu. If not, why not put it on Lifetime instead of airing movies with the same plot over and over.
bring back the soaps!!!!!!!!!!!
Kelly and Mark want to bring the soap back!!!!!!!
Bring All My Children back, it was a big mistake when cancelled in 2011
Yes replace it with a soap but a new one. How about a Dark Shadows revival if ABC can get the rights? Michael Easton as Barnabas Collins would be great. We need a different soap–a scary one.
Yes put a soap in that time slot but a new one. I would love to see a different type of soap–a scary mysterious soap i.e. a Dark Shadows reboot or a Port Charles reboot with Caleb the Vampire. Also Easton as Barnabas Collins would be great.
Dark Shadows or a mystery soap like Edge of Night!
Yes
It’s a boring show. I think they should do a new soap and cast actors from previous soaps. Like Kim Zimmer, Kelly Monaco, Gina Tognoni, etc etc etc.
I just don’t see it happening. BTG had a good premiere week. A few things: 1) It’s ratings are below Y&R and B&B. Logically if ABC put a new soap on, it’s ratings would be below GH. 2) Let’s see what BTG’s ratings settle at. Of course there was interest. Will that interest remain in week 2, month 2, year 2, etc. 3) ABC just fired people to cut costs. Bringing on a soap whether self produced or done by a 3rd party still will cost much more. Fun to talk about, but all this article is doing is getting people’s hopes up
Soaps are too predictable and woke now. What was neat about soaps is that they were a forbidden pleasure like “what would people think if they knew I was watching this shit?” Now there are no taboos and with the Internet leaking storylines and stuff soaps’ shock impact is particularly blunted. Plus everything is a soap opera now even the news.
If they’re firing people to save money because they want to do more with less, then starting a soap opera makes no sense because they cost a lot more to make, then talk or news shows.
If the soap gets good enough ratings to make up for the added cost of production, it does. Whether they’ve figured out how to pull that off is a separate question.
You don’t buy back the soap rights from Prospect Park unless you think the rights to an All My Children or One Life to Live has value. This is about streaming. GH has been a superstar on Hulu for years as has Days on Peacock. They have paying customers as well as ads. Compared to what it cost to create original programming out of thin air with big named stars a soap is a seen as a bargain due to its built in loyal following and content that runs 52 weeks of the year. And as cheap as news and talk shows are to produce no one wants to watch 5 to 6 hours of them everyday. Network news shows aren’t allowed to have the kind of ideologically slanted opinions that works for cable news shows on Fox or MSNBC. If AMC or OLTL return they will be rebooted with new characters and a new cast with none of the old vets except maybe Lucci or Slezak for cameos. Time has moved on.
ABC didn’t pay to get the rights to the two shows back, they reverted back to ABC after Prospect Park ended production on the short-lived online versions.
As much as I love AMC and OLTL, I would say launching a new soap would be the best way to go although I do remember OLTL was turning in good ratings when the show got cancelled so I would say if one of those shows were to be resurrected, OLTL would be the one I would choose.
Everyone is high fiving The Gates success. It has only been 2 weeks. A lot of the ratings is due to a curiosity factor. The show looks good, but I’d a lot of chit chat and relies on old storyline gimmicks. In order to compete in the streaming world, you need to be more edgy, not to mention some of the acting was sub par. It takes a solid viewership to sustain the glamorous sets and wardrobe. Check back in at the 6 month mark to see where we are at. Kudos to CBS for trying something new.
Sorry, but games shows would be a cheaper and more lucrative proposition. They already have the Pyramid and Press Your Luck in primetime. Make them half hour productions, and pop them in the lineup. Less expensive and less risky.
I respect what you are saying:but now we have way too many talk shows and games shows during the night and day. The networks should continue to look at the numbers. The talk shows or informational programs are tanking. I hope the best for BTG, because maybe it will quiet the naysayers and possibly and I said possibly, pave the way for another soap.
,
I have often wondered how games shows are cheaper to produce when a show like The Price is Right gives away an amazing amount of cash and prizes 5 days a week. Yes, the winner pays taxes on the winnings …but it is still a large amount of daily give aways
BRING BACK MY DAYTIME SOAPS!!!
How many talk shows do we really need ??? Bring my Soaps Back!!AMC and OLTL!!
Let’s be real: with Disney in major cost-cutting mode, there’s little chance they’re going to invest in another soap any time soon. Sadly, but honestly, “it’s all about doing more with less” is the antithesis of “let’s go hire a new cast and crew for a daytime drama.”
Why not bring them both back as half hour shows?
Eva Pilgrim is so bad I can’t watch. She has no charisma no personality most boring person on tv. She is the reason for low ratings.
BLUF: A previous dumb ABC daytime executive killed AMC and OLTL even though the ratings for both were over 3M viewers which will never happen with GMA3. Admit that you are wrong ABC and bring them back as 30 minute shows in that time slot. Works for B&B on CBS!
ABC should try and revamp AMC. There are still loyal fans who would embrace the show or even OLTL. GH has had crossovers from both former soaps (Nora Gannon and Jackson Montgomery). The thought of Erica Cain back on screen is incredible. If BTG can do it (great show btw i’ve seen every episode) ABC should be able to do the same format. ABC ruled the airwaves of afternoon soaps back in the 80’s with GH AMC and OLTL. They just need to put the right people in place like E Producer and writers. BTG films in Atlanta, ABC could find a less expensive place than LA or NYC to produce a good soap.
If they do bring back more soaps it’s a given they will be cast and produced from a non union state like Georgia to lower the production costs. I’m all for it. The sets on Beyond the Gates are beautiful and the clothing budget is not to shabby either.
Yes they should bring soap opera’s back to 1:00pm and 1:30pm
No.. Just the one. Bring back All my children. Wayyyyy too much news coverage.
Yes please bring back amc oltl as a replacement for gma3
Yes a soap opera should be considered to replace gma3

Mark Consuelos Mourns the Loss of His Father
Saul Consuelos, the father of All My Children alum and Live with Kelly and Mark co-host, Mark Consuelos (ex0-Mateo, AMC), has died. During an emotional moment on this mornings, April 6 edition of the syndicated talk show, Mark shared, that his dad, “passed away peacefully” back on March 23 following a long illness.
His wife and co-host, Kelly Ripa (ex-Hayley, AMC) paid tribute to her her father-in-law expressing, he was, “the greatest person I’ve ever known. I can honestly say I will miss him every day for the rest of my life, as I know you will, as our children will. He really is so symbolic of everything you are.”
Kelly and Mark’s children, Joaquin, Michael and Lola Consuelos are said to be taking this extremely hard. Ripa added, “This is the first loss they’ve ever experienced in their lives. And I said, ‘By the time I was 8, I had no grandparents. You got to grow up (with grandparents). You got to have deep, meaningful conversations (with them).”

In another moment, Mark reflected on his dad. “It’s funny, I used to make a joke about my dad … if you asked him what time it was, he would tell you how to build a watch. There were a lot of lectures, a lot of lectures and I learned so much. If he was fixing something in the house, he’d make me watch and do it. And I didn’t know at the time why he was doing that. But now at the house, I’m able to do at least half of the stuff that he did. I learned the most by just watching him.”
Mark added that Saul Consuelos came to the U.S. from Mexico in his early teens and served our county for decades, detailing, he “Ended up at Special Operations Command in Tampa. This young kid from Mexico just got his education from the navy. Was always going to school. Was brilliant. Got his Masters while I was a kid. He loved his country so much, If you’re going to put a face to an immigrant, he would be the prime example of what this country promises people.”
In a very heart-tugging moment, Consuelos shared that now its important they be there for his mother, Camilla. “We gotta take care of mom. We’re trying to convince my mom to move to New York. She’s such a character, she’s stubborn. What do you think, a cooking segment here on Fridays with Camilla?”
Now below, watch the very touching and emotional moments as Mark Consuelos and Kelly Ripa mourn the loss of Saul Consuelos.

Sarah Michelle Gellar Visits ‘The View’ Where Hosts Sidestep Controversial ‘Buffy’ Reboot Axing, But Talk ‘All My Children’
On yesterday’s March 17 episode of The View, All My Children alum, Sarah Michelle Gellar (ex-Kendall Hart), was the special guest. Since Monday, Gellar has been the subject of a hot-button issue since about the surprising turn of events that the highly-anticipated Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot, in which she stars, and which was directed in the pilot by Oscar-winning director, Chloé Zhao, was no longer moving forward.
Gellar‘s appearance on the ABC morning talk show was devoid of any mention of Hulu cancelling its planned Buffy: New Sunnydale, in which Sarah was set to appear along with Ryan Kiera Armstrong. However, Gellar did discuss her new movie Ready or Not 2: Here I Come from Searchlight Pictures.
It should be noted that both Hulu and Searchlight Pictures are owned by The Walt Disney Company, while The View is produced by ABC News, which is also owned by The Walt Disney Company.

During the awkward interview, when it became clear the ‘Buffy’ reboot topic was off the table, The View co-host Sunny Hostin, talked about the “intense fight scenes” that have become a staple of her TV and film career starting with Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Scream 2, and I Know What You Did Last Summer.
The ladies of The View also brought up Sarah’s beginnings on All My Children as Kendall Hart (1993-1995), showing a scene with her and her on-screen mother, the iconic Erica Kane, played by Susan Lucci. The discussion sprung out of another All My Children alum, Michael B. Jordan (ex-Reggie Montgomery) winning the Oscar this past Sunday for Best Actor for his role in Sinners. The View’s Joy Behar was quick to point out with Gellar, the All My Children alums that have gone on to great fame.

Photo: ABC
Previously on Monday, Gellar opened up to PEOPLE about being blindsided before while at the SXSW Film & TV Festival premiere for Ready or Not 2: Here I Come. “I got the call as we were stepping onto stage for the premiere of their own movie. And it’s also the weekend of Chloé going to the Oscars as a best director nominee for Hamnet. For them to call us on the Friday of what should have been Chloé’s victory lap for an incredible film, and my world premiere of something that I worked very hard for is… that says something.”
She went to say, “We had an executive on our show who was not only not a fan of the original, but was proud to constantly remind us that he had never seen the entirety of the series and how it wasn’t for him.” Deadline reports that “multiple sources” identified the executive as Disney Television Group President Craig Erwich.
“I loved the duality that we had with this new, younger slayer who was where Buffy was when the show started, and then we would pick up with where Buffy was now,” Gellar told People about the setup. However, according also to Deadline “After the pilot was completed and delivered, according to multiple sources, Hulu’s main note was that it played too young, with some indicating that the streamer also felt the show was too “small.”’
In the rewrite, sources also told the outlet that the writers did not take big enough swings, so they set out to do a rewrite it again. The last revision was more adult, featuring a lot more of Gellar’s Buffy, and was described as a more of a streaming show than a network one. When all is said and done there is hope that another Buffy IP will be up and running within the next couple of years.
You can check out Sarah Michelle Gellar’s full segment on The View below. Now let us know, bummed there is no Buffy reboot? What do you think about how this high profile Hollywood saga was side-stepped on the morning show? Did you love Sarah as the original Kendall Hart on All My Children?
