KATIE Loses 43% of GH's Audience in Key New York Market! Couric's Talker Falls Below Last Season's Time Period Average Where GH Was!

Courtesy/ABC
Those who were hoping that Katie Couric’s new talk show may tank, or run into some difficulties, are certainly getting their wish! There were several reports over the weekend that indicated that after the fast start of the show on its premiere episode last Monday, things started to falter, which also showed the power of GH as well!
Here are some numbers from Variety! “On WABC New York’s major market station last Wednesday, Katie scored a 1.8/14 at 3 p.m., while Steve Harvey’s show on WNBC at 3 p.m., turned in a 1.2/10. While head-to-head, Katie won that timeslot battle, but the Couric show lost 43% of its General Hospital lead-in (3.2/24)!”
Then Deadline.com reported, “In the first four days, Katie has shed 39% in households and 50% in W 25-54 from its big premiere numbers. What is more alarming is that the show has fallen below the time period average last season (2.3/7 HH, 1.4/8 in W25-54), when a large number of stations carried General Hospital. ”
It will be interesting to see the ratings this Friday for GH, which will include the first week in their new timeslot! The prior week Sept 3-7, although GH lost some viewers, it should be noted that they held steady at No. 2 in Women 18-49 key demo, and are up in total viewers for this same time last year!
So what does this all mean soapers? Is Katie going to find her footing? Is this another big misstep that nothing but bringing back fans beloved soaps will work in the ABC Daytime line-up? Weigh-in!

Lifetime’s ‘Ladies of the ’80s: A Divas Christmas’ Brings Epic Food Fight and “Slapfest Coup de Grâce”

Get ready for the feuding soap opera divas, when five actresses known for their signature primetime and daytime roles are brought together in Lifetime’s new holiday film, Ladies of the ’80s: A Divas Christmas.
Saturday night, December 2nd on Lifetime (8pm ET/7PM CT) marks the highly-anticipated holiday movie premiere featuring: Donna Mills (ex-Knots Landing), Nicolette Sheridan (ex-Knots Landing), Morgan Fairchild (ex-Falcon Crest et al), Linda Gray (ex-Dallas) and Loni Anderson (ex-WKRP in Cincinnati).
Here’s what we do know! In story, five alums from the long-running soap, The Great Lakes reunite for a live Christmas finale. Uh-oh! Now take a look at the backstory of the colorful cast of characters (pay special attention to the clever twists on the actresses names!)

Photo: Lifetime
LAUREN EWING (Linda Gray) “Everyone thinks I’m so damn good all the time,” confesses the junk food-loving Lauren of her second act as a lifestyle guru. “I don’t know how Gwenyth Paltrow does it!”
DANA CUNNINGHAM (Donna Mills) Now a sitcom mom, she’s yet to make amends to ex-bestie Juliette after abruptly leaving the soap back in the day. Not that she hasn’t tried: “When I thought the world was going to end in Y2K,” Dana says, “I reached out to her, and she never called me back.”
LILY MARLOWE (Loni Anderson) After replacing Dana on ‘Great Lakes’, Lily never again found a role to win her acclaim. “What do I have to show for (my career)? An arc on For the People – Shonda Rhimes’ only flop!”
JULIETTE MATHESON (Nicollette Sheridan) “She left me for L.A.,” the party girl turned fashion mogul recalls of Dana’s betrayal. Will their feud derail the entire event?
MARGEAUX ROBERTS (Morgan Fairchild) “Fasten your face-lifts, ladies, it’s gonna be a bumpy weekend!” The sassy grande dame of ‘Great Lakes’ sees the Juliette-Dana beef as the perfect escape from her own domestic drama.

Photo: Lifetime
Now, making this all the more hysterical is the director of The Great Lakes reunion special, which makes the five women live under the same roof, is its former child star Alex, who has gotten his ex-girlfriend, Nell to direct the finale. Meanwhile, in the subplot. the ‘Ladies of the ’80s’ come up with a plan to get Alex and Nell back together.
As with any good soap opera, there is a major food fight. Linda Gray shared with USA Today ,”The food fight was one take. And it was fabulous.” And of course, their is a bitch-fest slap-fest. Morgan Fairchild revealed, “Oh honey, we all got ours in. Mine was a simple, ‘How dare you?’ with a slap. But I was hoping for a punch.”

Photo: Lauren Dukoff/Lifetime
The movie’s EP, Larry Thompson, who is a Hollywood manager and has Donna Mills as a client, said that the entire scene peaks with the”slapfest coup de grâce.” What is that exactly? That is when Donna Mills pushes Nicollette Sheridan into a pool in a nod to Dynasty’s Lily bond battle between Dynasty’s Alexis (Joan Collins) and Krystle (Linda Evans).
In case you missed it previously, check out the trailer for Ladies of the ’80s: A Divas Christmas below, also starring Patrika Darbo, Alec Mapa, Mills real-life daughter, Chloe Mills, and Christopher Atkins with theme song by Tiffany.

GENERAL HOSPITAL: Ava Receives a Haunting Letter About Austin’s Murder

On Thursday’s November 30th episode of General Hospital, Dante (Dominic Zamprogna) is on the case of who shot Austin (Roger Howarth) and pays a visit to Ava Jerome (Maura West) at Wyndemere.
Dante asks Ava when was the last time she saw Dr. Austin Gatlin-Holt. She asks why and what is going on with Austin? Dante tells her he’s dead, and assumes she must already know, especially given her non-reaction to the news.
Ava tells Dante she was last with Austin two days ago at her gallery. When he questions her if security footage can back that up, that would then give her an alibi. However, Ava explains she left out the back, and that the surveillance camera has not been working. Since the murder happened in Pautauk, Dante tells Ava they will want to question her.

She responds that a lot of people in town knew Austin from Maxie (Kirsten Storms) and on. However, Dante points out that Ava was the only one that was kidnapped by Mason (Nathanyael Grey). Ava says she will have her lawyer ready.
As Dante exits, Ava looks through her unopened mail. She finds a letter addressed to her and it says inside on note paper, “You’re welcome.” But that’s not all, inside the letter is a polaroid of Austin’s dead body.

Also in story, Molly (Kristen Vaganos) has a meltdown when she has to start the finding a surrogate process all over again, and is found crying on a park bench by her sister, Kristina (Kate Mansi). Will this be the conversation where Molly will take up Kristina on her initial offer to carry the child for her and TJ (Tahj Bellow)?

In another key moment, James thinks Cody (Josh Kelly) would make a great big brother, which then gets Felicia (Kristina Wagner) flashing back to when Cody told Mac that it turns out Mac is not his bio-dad. Felicia senses something is not right. Is she finally on to the fact that Cody lied to Mac? Stay tuned.

So, who do you think sent the letter to Ava about killing Austin? Is it Nikolas? Cyrus? Mason? Could it be Ava herself, who doesn’t remember she did the deed, or could it be someone else? Share your thoughts via the comment section below.

General Hospital Pays Tribute to Tyler Christopher at End of Episode, ABC Exec Nathan Varni Shares: “You’ll Always Be In Our Hearts”

If you caught the end of the Monday, November 27th Thanksgiving episode of General Hospital, the ABC daytime drama ended the show with a special dedication to Tyler Christopher (ex-Nikolas Cassadine), who passed away on October 31st at the age of 50.
With a very touching title card, and a photo of Tyler from his younger days as the dark prince of the Cassadine clan, it read, “In Loving Memory of Tyler Christopher.”
On Tuesday, November 28th, ABC Current Series executive, Nathan Varni, who oversees Grey’s Anatomy, The Conners, Station 19 and General Hospital for the network, shared on X some additional thoughts on Tyler’s contributions to the GH family.

Photo: JPI
Varni expressed: “This lovely tribute card was shown at the end of yesterday’s episode of GH In loving memory of Tyler Christopher. Thanks for bringing Nikolas Cassadine to life on our screens, you’ll always be in our hearts. RIP.”
Tyler played the role of GH’s Nikolas from 1996–1999, 2003–2011, and lastly from 2013–2016. He also took on the role of Connor Bishop from 2004–2005. The late actor took home the Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series in 2016 for his work as Nikolas.

The Young and the Restless to Air Classic Episode From 1993 on Thanksgiving Day With Connection to Current Cole/Claire/Aunt Jordan Storyline
I will be happy when they follow the revolution into cancellation…what will it take for abc to wake up and realize we don’t want talk shows, cooking shows we want what has worked for this network for decades…just put back what wasn’t broken…put back one life to live and all my children!!!!
Agreed!
Double agree!
Agreed! I miss One Life to Live!
I couldn’t agree more. The Talk and this new show need to be cancelled. It is only a matter of time before The Chew ends as well.
RIGHT ON!! WHEN WILL THEY LISTEN!?
I agree 100% …………….
Yes listen to the viewers, you see the proof! Bring back our soaps!!!
HA HA HA KATIE, AND ABC JUST SHOW YOU CANNOT MESS WITH OUR SOAPS
ROCK ON GH!!!! WE LOVE YOU AND MISS AMC AND OLTL
WILL NOT WATCH KATIE, THE CHEW PERIOD NO WAY
ABC SHOULD LEARN WOMEN WANT WHAT WOMEN WANT
I couldn’t agree more! Give the viewers what they want….AMC and OLTL!
All the new shows will fail! We want our soaps!
Agree
ABC, can you spell boycott? Since you pulled OLTL and AMC, I watch none of your other shows besides GH. Acknowledge that there is strong fan loyalty for our soaps. Bring them back. Then, I’ll consider watching something else on your network. It’s as simple as that.
Rock on!!!!!!! ABC wake up. No AMC or OLTL, no ABC. Bring back our soaps!!
AGREED damn it. What’s it GONNA TAKE TO WAKE UP, ABC??????????????
Please bring AMC and OLTL back…GH should be put back to their air spot, too. I’ve watched each of these shows from day one…Agree with the previous posts that ABC should wake up and bring things back to how they were!
As far as the boycott goes…once Desperate Housewives ended that was it for me!
They are desperate for viewers and are failing with everything they place in the afternoon..How great…! Enough with the talk shows and cooking shows! That’s why we have networks who specialize in these types of shows!
Bring back our soaps, ABC…When will you wake up?
Just Bring Back Our Shows!!!!! AMC & OLTL get katie and the chew off !!!!!!! Give the fans what they want.
AMC and OLTL were our family along with GH. The only show on ABC that I will watch is GH. I even changed my news stations. I banned ABC from my home until they bring back AMC and OLTL.
Where I live, Katie does not follow directly after GH. But I’m not interested in watching anything but my soaps, anyway. Give me a great scripted show, with adventure and romance, EVERY time over a lot of magpies flapping their gums.
I agree nobody want to see katie or the chew heck i turn the channel
if they are on when i am surfing the tv waiting for GH to come on
Haha! Strike two for ABC!
Actually Strike Three, becuase there other replacement show “Good Afternoon America” did very poorly as well lol
Actually, strike 3 if you count GAA 🙂
Actually it’s strike 3! Don’t forget the Good Afternoon America debacle. Way to go ABC!!
Can’t say I didn’t see this coming … because I did.
Maybe ABC will some day listen to the viewing audience that wants LOVE and excitement in the afternoon and not TALK and boredom, but probably not. I hope they enjoy losing money then.
i enjoy watching them lose money ha ha abc
better not cancel GH now viewers will turn you off for good
love soaps and love in the afternoon as well not TALK SHOWS BORING
My time is valuable and I can’t be bothered with talk or reality shows. When I sit down to watch tv, I want to escape into a story. I used to watch Ryan’s Hope, Loving, The City, Port Charles, All My Children, and One Life to Live. Now the only time my tv (or DVR) are used in the day are for General Hospital. ABC wants me back? Bring daytime dramas back.
You said it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DITTO!!!!
Here here!! No soaps, I’m not watching or recording!!
This is kind of good and bad news. Because the only reason ABC renewed GH is on behalf of Katie wanting GH has her lead-in, if her show flops….then…
Then nothing…..They won’t cancel GH it would be suicide.
They definitely wouldn’t get rid of it! Too many followers of the other soaps have migrated over because of other great soaps being cancelled.
Are you forgetting? Suicide is ABC’s middle name! ABC Suicide Disney! LOL!! The boycott is working and Katie is going down in flames!!!
Kevin, I don’t know what you’re looking at, but the numbers clearly prove that the large majority of the viewers of the recently cancelled soaps have NOT moved on to the remaining soaps. I’m sure a very small portion have, but most clearly have not because they know that the writing is probably on the wall for all of them, especially GH and Days.
Don’t buy that they renewed GH only to give Katie a good lead-in. GH isn’t the lead-in many markets. That was just Katies PR machine putting that out there so soap fans wouldn’t boycott her show.
For me the lead in for GH is at 1:00pm (The Sprew),2:00p.m. GH & at 3:00p.m. another talk show(Steve Harvey)…. Katie is on NBC on my cable provider & she on at 2:00p.m. the same time as GH….At 2:00p.m. I watch GH not Katie…I will nerver watch her talk show(BORING )!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I want my love in the afternoon (DRAMA)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If we soap fans continue to tune out that is how we make our voices known. I for one will not watch the Chew,Katie or anything else on ABC’s afternoon line up. Tv goes off or to another channel at 12pm back on ABC for GH 2-3pm and then off ABC for the rest of the afternoon. Come to think of it the only ABC shows I watch at all are GMA, Rachel Ray, The View. Katie needs to go!
ketie couric had a good start. if katie fails and her talk show gets cancelled, back to reality people. maybe abc will finally admit that they made a huge mistake in cancelling one life to live and all my children. abc will still not admit that they made a huge mistake in cancelling the 2 soaps. i know this sounds crazy but maybe they can bring one life to live back in january or next year. i know that the actors have moved on. but never say never. miracles to happen folks. i don’t think all my children will come back at abc. maybe hln can pick up all my children.
I would really like for OLTL to be put back on but I am not sure that will happen….Yes some of the actor’s moved on…I agree with you never say never….
Hallelujiah!! Way to go Katie!
so much for a strong lead in! Also in most markets Katie is on NBC. As Gail Shister (TV Newser) said starting it with Jessica simpson was a bad move.
Yes Katie is on NBC w/ my cable provider…She’s on the same time GH is on for me…..
Sorry… but we didn’t need or want Katie!
True….
AGREE!!!!!!
AGREE too!
You want viewers? You want high ratings? Bring back One Life to Live.
Agreed!
Exactly Louisa!
Amen!!
Agreed! I miss my ONE LIFE TO LIVE. Bring it back.
Exactly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Agreed.
Agree!!!! I would love to have OLTL back but since ABC destroyed the OLTL sets and will not admit they made a huge mistake, make GH 1 1/2 Hours and bring on more OLTL characters.
Again, I Agree !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Agree with louisa !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
OMG, from your lips to God’s ears! I would kill for OLTL to come back.
YAY!! Now I just wish The Spew would tank too. ABC needs to get their heads out of their butts.. We Want our Soaps.
Can’t understand why The Chew is still on……………..That cooking show makes me throw-up…………. Yes I want our soaps back also!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is what happens when you mess with soap fans.. As soon as Katie’s show flops someone should create a soap with actors from OLTL/AMC and take over her time slot.. .
GREAT IDEA !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
Katie doesn’t follow GH in the San Francisco Bay area either. Jeopardy and Millionaire air in between the two.
Buh-bye Couric…
HA!
LOL When is ABC going to learn?? We want SOAPS nothing more or less!! Hey just put AMC and OLTL on in re-runs and you would get way more viewers then Katie……..
Good hope her ratings keep slipping will not watch anything but GH
I do not watch talk shows. Ever. None of them – I’m glad her show tanked this week. Hopefully ABC, CBS & NBC will realize that we like drama and our soaps, not a bunch of women talking about issues all day long or making food. I hope the whole reality show/talk show genre ends soon and get back to employing actors on creative shows again!
We are on the same page …………..
Gee what a surprise. Get real, ABC’s replacement shows never work.
They sure don’t…And they never will !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
NEVER EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We laughed our asses off when ABC paid $20M to Katie as the supposed heir apparent to Oprah. Give us a break. She can’t do a one woman show and she’s not that great. It was a waste of money they could have put to AMC and OLTL. They didn’t think a few million Soap viewers mattered to their successful Daytime lineup, and we are teaching them differently. I give 90 minutes a day to CBS and one hour a day to ABC (you guess which one), and that isn’t going to change. If Netflix picks up AMC and OLTL, I will be a subscriber for life. It could have been you, ABC.
You are so right! Agree. I watch every single soap on the air right now, will always support any soap still on. That money spent on Miss Katie (who has plenty of money already, go AWAY) could have saved AMC & OLTL even if they had to cut them back to 30 minutes or something-there had to be way to save these precious shows.
Bring back OLTL and AMC. Nothing else is going to satisfy daytime viewers.
DITTO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The empty suits at ABC are so stupid! Soap fans cannot be trained to watch!
But I don’t think TPTB at ABC/Disney will ever admit their mistake in cancelling AMC and OLTL. ABC/D has already spent much more $ than it would have ever cost to do our soaps!
another ABC error – especially since this show costs TWICE as much a soap! DUMB DUMB DUMB!
I stopped watching EVERYTHING abc when the cancelled AMC and OLTL. The one exception is GH, otherwise that channel is never on. When do you think they will realize their mistakes?
Why Ask Why? Moving an iconic show time slot to accommodate a new unproven show is just weird. I am on tour in the heartland of America, I have contact with THOUSANDS of people every single day after my shows, and what I hear more than any thing is how MUCH THEY MISS THEIR SHOWS. The sadness on their faces is truly like witnessing a death on the family. ABC, go back to move forward! the audience does not want the wheel reinvented. It’s OKAY to make a mistake, what creates success in life AND business is to cut your losses and give the people what they want. All will be forgiven! And if you aren’t going to, then please, PLEASE, for the love of all things good, sell the rights to a company that can actually deliver the goods. The former Chief had such contempt for the audience, it would be nice to show that you respect them and do the right thing.
Well said Catherine. Daytime misses your work everyday. Wish someone would be smart enough to put you back on daytime. : )
Well said. I am a huge fan. So happy for your current success, but I miss Lindsay. One of my fave characters from my fave show. Best to you.
I miss Viki, Roxie,Rex, GiGi,and more………………Especially Erika Slezak my #1 favorite of OLTL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!(BLONDIE)……………..
Well said, I was always taught ‘the customer is always right’. ABC forgot that, they stopped putting the customer first, which is according to the ratings us soap fans. We still want AMC and OLTL back, and will not support anything else except GH till that happens.
I agree with you !!!!!!!!!!!
i love you Cat and i miss you all very, very much
We, the viewing public, are bored with talk shows! Bring back One Life to Live and All my Children. I am watching much less tv these days……..
I was thinking the same thing the other day — if GH & Days weren’t on the air, I wouldn’t even need to pay for satellite TV anymore. Talk shows and reality TV certainly aren’t luring me in.
Dear Katie: LMFAO! That’s what you get for being in cahoots with ABC/D. The soaps fans told you your show would fail, and Lord knows I love to be right!
Dear ABC/D: Say goodbye to your 80 million dollars. I hope it was worth it. For that money, you could’ve kept AMC and OLTL on the air for a few more years, kept millions of viewers from boycotting you, and possibly made some money from the advertisers who wouldn’t have left you (*ahem* Hoover *ahem*). In conclusion, ABC, you’re a bunch of idiots.
I dont not like her, she seems like the type to cut you IF you get in her way.
AMEN GH HAS!
Well, what does it take to knock sense into ABC’s head??? Nothing ABC tries to start up is going to make it ratings wise or otherwise. We want our soaps back AMC and OLTL. We can continue this game as long as ABC wants to play. We the Soap Fans are here for the long haul. As for Katie, the ship is sinking. Get off the boat before you get wet!
KATIE was not even picked up in my little market in Florida, couldnt watch her if I wanted to and I have satalite. AAAAND dont want to!
#AMC #OLTL # GH !!
I go for that line-up 100%…………………….And nothing else will do….
Whanh whanhh……..
I Hope this gets Canceled like The Revolting Revolution was. and When is ABC gonna realize that US Soap fans do NOT want any more talk shows or cooking shows, all i want is ONE LIFE TO LIVE Back!
Ditto.
ABC wants to see the ratings rise then maybe they should finally listen to the fans and bring back AMC and OLTL! We don’t want talk and fluff, we want the people we grew up watching!
people want the soaps and NOTHING ELSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I know I do !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You hit the nail on the head !!!!
That’s my take. Watching no replacement shows other than soaps. Let’s see how long their daytime lineup will last. See what happens when you don’t give the ppl what they want-doomed talk shows, failing 1 after another.
So far, things don’t look so good for Katie Poo, do they? Will ABC/D FINALLY admit that they screwed up and get to work on bringing AMC and OLTL back to our daytime airwaves? We can only hope!
I do not get the pleasure of turning my TV off for Katie Couric, because she is on the NBC affiliate in my market. I get the pleasure of turning Ricki Lake off because she follows GH here. How many times is ABC going to run into the wall before they finally admit it’s there? Viewers do not want talk shows…we want OLTL and AMC back!
I knew Katie would lose viewers & that it wouldn’t last……….Everyone was curious and watched the first couple of days…And that is all it was ………None of these repacement shows will never work…Bring back OLTL & AMC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! When will ABC ever learn !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That we the soap fans want DRAMA (OUR STORIES) !!!!!!!!!
It’s only a matter of days or wks. And she will be cancelled!!
I hope so! Oh but wait there is Rickie Lake coming and a new slew of talk shows waiting in the wings …. no one cares about them obviously. Hopefully one by one will get canceled.
ABC just doesn’t get it with all these talk/info/cooking shows..Thay no soap fan is interested in watching any of them….And they keep putting them on..One get’s cancelled ABC put another one in it’s place..Oviously they are not working out on daytime.. And no one will watch no matter what they are…Are they that dense !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just to clarify, as of Sept. 10, ABC cut its network daytime schedule by one hour and now programs from 1-3 pm/ET in the afternoon instead of 1-4 pm (in addition to 11 am – 12 noon for The View, of course.)
Katie is a syndicated show. It airs on many ABC affiliates, but not all of them. Thus, GH is not her lead-in everywhere. Even if Katie’s show ultimately fails, that hour will still stay with the affiliates and will NOT be given back to the ABC network. They’ll simply move other syndicated/local programs into that time slot. And no matter what happens to Katie and GH, AMC and OLTL are NOT coming back anywhere. No network is even the least bit interested in them and the cast and crew members of both shows have all moved on. I know you may not like that, but all of you here need to follow suit and move on too.
Say whatever you want about Katie Couric as a host/anchor (I personally don’t care for her, but have nothing against her), but it’s not her fault that daytime soaps are a fading genre. (ABC is not the only network that has dumped them in the last few years or is looking into dumping them.) If it wasn’t Katie, I’m sure ABC/Disney would have hired some other big name to helm a talk show trying to fill Oprah’s big shoes. And no, I’m not an ABC/Disney executive, employee, stockholder, etc.
Soaps are not a fading genre. The problem is viewers do not want to see talk and cook shows. ABC/Disney needs to face the facts that nothing they put in their place will succeed. Katie Couric or Revolution or any other stupid show like them.
CORRECT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If viewers “do not want to see talk and cook shows” in daytime as you say, then how come the ratings across the board in daytime clearly prove the exact opposite? There must be some disconnect here.
Like it or not, The Chew is a success for ABC by today’s ratings standards and has cultivated an audience that enjoys it. I forget, what kind of show did that replace? I rest my case. Same goes for The Talk on CBS. (The Revolution was simply a poorly executed show, nothing more.) And The View continues to lead the way in the morning.
Would you care to explain the rock-solid ratings for the newly-christened Live! with Kelly and Michael? Or Steve Harvey and Katie getting off to decent starts? Plus, Judge Judy keeps pulling 6.0’s and 8+ million viewers.
Maury Povich still gets 3.0-3.5 million viewers daily. Jerry Springer keeps drawing in the 2 millions and just finished his third straight season higher than the previous season. That’s hard for any show to do, especially one that’s been around for as long as his. Steve Wilkos just came off his best season yet. And Dr. Phil, Dr. Oz, Rachael Ray, and Ellen continue to chug right along and show growth from the prior season.
Like it or not, talk shows are very attractive to networks/syndicators because they’re inexpensive to produce and many, many people do watch them, regardless of what a tiny group of sour online soap fans think. I do think we’ve reached a saturation point with them, but there’s clearly a demand for them if/when the right person and format comes along. Thus, producers will keep putting them on with the hope of finding the next Oprah, the next Phil Donahue, the next Ellen, etc. If one or two fail, others will be on the way.
Not to say that Katie or Steve Harvey will stay at these opening levels. There’s no guarantee in that, but at the very least there has been curiosity to sample their shows. If people were so sick and tired of talk shows as you say, they would have been D.O.A. right from the very start and there would have been zero interest anywhere.
Chris- The ratings of ABC/D show the power of the soap fans, we will not give up, If ABC/D doesn’t get it, then their ratings will continue to fail, no matter what non-soap is put in. We are the customers, we are not buying any big names to replace our soaps, and if other networks think of cancelling their soaps, the same thing will happen with their ratings, we soap fans have banned together and will continue to do so.
I am with you.
yes you are.but if you re not, you re a jerk.
So, I’m a “jerk” merely because I made truthful comments about this situation and was not being a soap cheerleader? If you want to keep living in fantasy land, that’s fine. That does not change the clear reality that exists- GH and Days will probably be cancelled soon if the ratings (esp. 18-49 females) don’t improve in a hurry. Sometimes the truth hurts. If you can’t handle that, that’s not my problem.
“AMC and OLTL are NOT coming back anywhere. No network is even the least bit interested in them”
OUCH !!!!
Here’s hoping you are proven wrong !!
Chris,
We know for a fact that NBC was interested in OLTL until Frons killed the deal. We soapers aren’t naive to business practices, but we ARE prepared to take down ANYTHING ABC throws at us until they rethink their strategy and put AMC and OLTL back into production. Simple as that
Troy, are you typing your posts with a straight face? You don’t seem to realize how utterly laughable you come across in your posts. Right-headed readers who view these boards are laughing so hard in your face, and you don’t seem to realize it. I see you on a number of sites, and you’re so full of it everywhere.
If NBC was really interested in acquiring OLTL as you say, then prove it. Who was the NBC/Universal executive who let it be known publicly that they were interested? Bring evidence to the board here that supports that claim. I don’t buy that for a minute and think that’s wishful thinking on your part. If anything, NBC is almost certainly looking into getting out of daytime soaps themselves. If Days’ ratings continue at these dismal levels, it’s certainly a prime target for cancellation very soon too. It’s not just ABC that’s looking to move on from this business. And AMC and OLTL will return when pigs fly, so give it up already. Get real, man.
Troy,
HAHAHAHA!! Just wondering, how’s it going in your quest to “take down” The Chew? I’d love to know what you’re smoking if you really think that such a tiny percentage of hard-core soap fans are capable of “taking it down”. You’re in complete denial and need a serious reality check, man. (BTW, The Revolution tanked simply because it was a bad show with a tedious concept that few were interested in seeing 5x/week- nothing more than that. It happens all the time. Like it or not, the other 3 soap replacements on CBS and ABC have all established themselves, so there’s nothing you can do that’s capable of “taking them down”. LOL)
No matter what false propaganda/utter nonsense you type on any site, people like you are no longer powerful enough to launch a full-scale boycott that will bring down a whole network- period, case closed. This is not 1980 anymore. Whether you admit it or not, soap fans like you who are so up in arms over this decision by ABC are now such a dwindling, microscopic group that you’re not even remotely threatening anyone at ABC/Disney. It’s merely a tiny vocal minority. Unlike yourself, 99% of sane people who were sad and perhaps disappointed/initially angry at the AMC/OLTL cancellations were not surprised and/or understood that it was a business decision by ABC. Those people were not petty enough to make asinine boycott threats, and actually moved on a long time ago with the rest of their lives. Imagine that. If you do have a life, you should really try the same thing by now. (You should consider being a comedian. LOL) You’ll definitely need much more than a phantom pea-shooter to make any kind of impact here.
I personally don’t think that ABC empty suits will admit they were wrong and bring back AMC and OLTL but I really think more characters will crossover to GH from the 2 soaps. TPTB won’t admit a mistake but they will most likely quietly fix things that a messed up!
Chris,
That’s why our sources are called sources-I’m not at liberty to tell you who at NBC was interested, but it doesn’t matter since Frons killed the deal. If anybody here wants to give new info, feel free
Everyone is entitled to their opionion…
but can’t help but wonder if you are such a “hater” of the soaps… are you’re commets here just to “bully” soap lovers?
Funny how anyone who’s not a rah-rah soap cheerleader and is merely bringing a dose of honesty to the discussion is automatically labeled a “hater”. I’m just being a “realist” – that’s all. Some of you people just can’t face the clear reality that these soaps (especially GH and Days) will probably be cancelled soon if the ratings don’t shoot up. Sometimes the truth hurts. If you can’t handle the truth about this situation, then you really need to grow up.
Your “rant” proves all about who’s the one who needs to do some growing. End of, for me, but I’m sure you will once again, feel baited.
Best to you Chris… whomever you are.
Boo hoo.
The power of the soap fans is not to be taken cavalierly.
How can Kaie be so exhauted promoting her show when she was giving inivations to children on a merrygoround. All the money for this show and how boring it is ABC hope you will learn. The soaps are very entertaining and they have a way to excape from real world at times . There were so many promos for the show it made people tired before the show even aired. Just like the Glass House and that Failed.
ABC needs to face the facts that they will not get their viewers back on these stupid talk and cook shows. Bring back OLTL.
I can’t picture ABC giving Katie the boot any time too quickly! They have WAY too much $$$ on the line to admit that HUGE of a failure. All I keep thinking is that, I believe ABC gets the rights back to OLTL & AMC in January 2013 after Prospect Parks time has run out “owning the shows”. To be honest, I can’t see AMC ever coming back, but I could see possibly OLTL. But then, here we all go again…….. Fighting over bringing back the OLTL characters from GH!!!
why not AMC ?.it was a great show too for God sake
Katie is failing because she has no back bone. She is most certainly no Oprah, nor will she ever come close. Katie is a tool that no one knows what to do with. Sorry, but she doesn’t represent strong women and I have no desire to watch her.
That being said, I don’t blame her for anything that has happened with daytime TV. That I blame on networks not promoting the soaps and I think a lot of it has to do with mothers not introducing their daughters to their beloved soaps. Soaps used to be traditions between generations of women. It brought me and my mother closer (and her and her mother) and gave us something to chat about and look forward to daily. Its sad that so many generations won’t get to experience that magic. All I can hope for is that General Hospital doesn’t get cancelled, at least not anytime soon. If it does, I will have lost that tie to the women in my family and I won’t be able to pass it on to my daughters.
Well that didn’t take long I’d take GAA over her show. At least Josh Elliott & Lara Spencer have personality. Katie doesn’t have any sincerity it is so surprising she was The Pentagon reporter for NBC be4 the Today Show now she doing junk. Oh ABC end the torture. Reruns of AMC, OLTL or the older classics Dark Shadows or Ryans Hope would bring better numbers.
I never liked her on the Today Show and I’m certainly not going to flip on a show with her as a host. She just seems like a fraud to me like most of them. Hands down, the only talk show I’ve EVER tuned into is Oprah but she wasn’t stealing time slots from soaps!
It was bound to happen….I’m sure most people just tuned on the first initial episodes, out of pure curiosity. Her show has no lasting power. I mean, have you seen how many talk shows were being added to the daytime viewing lineup? It’s bound to tank. Just as TPTB say that there are so many channels and claim that people aren’t watching soaps for that very reason…the same thing can be said about talk shows. Talk shows are a thing of the past, and it will be so interesting to see how many of them end up on the chopping block by Spring.
I’d almost be happy if ABC admit they made a huge mistake in cancelling OLTL!
