Kelly Ripa on All My Children Primetime Reboot: “It’s a Darker Look at things, and I’m Very Excited About It.”

Photo: JPI

According to talk-show host, executive producer, and former All My Children star, Kelly Ripa (Ex-Hayley), the highly-anticipated reboot in the works of the beloved soap, will be focused on the children of familiar characters from the town of Pine Valley and have a much darker feel than its original daytime counterpart.

The series that everyone has been talking about is, of course, Pine Valley, which is being executive produced by Ripa, along with her husband, Mark Consuelos (Ex-Mateo), and Andrew Stearn.

Photo:ABC

Kelly, who is celebrating her 20th year on ‘Live’, spoke with Entertainment Weekly where part of the conversation turned to what she could share on the AMC reboot.

Ripa expressed how the original cast would fit into the new updated version of the soap: “We would be the parents, and this show is really more about the children of Pine Valley.”

She went on to say, “It’s a darker look at things, and I’m very excited about it. It was pitched to us and we were like, ‘We will absolutely produce this. And we want to be a part of it.’ Immediately we called Eva LaRue (Ex-Mara), all of our friends, and we started saying, ‘Just be at the ready. Get ready.’ ”

Just as fans are excited about the return to Pine Valley, so is Ripa: “All My Children is responsible for every singular good thing that has happened in my life. I met my husband there, I had my children there – not in the studio but pretty close; they kept you there until your contractions were five minutes apart, as we like to say.  It’s from there that I got the talk show. It’s from there that I got Hope & Faith…. and our first production deal. So it’s truly responsible for every good thing in my life that’s happened to me.”

So what do you think about the edgier All My Children on the way? Who would you like to see cast in the younger set to play some of the kids, and their love interests, of the Santos and Kane families, etc? Comment below.

I never followed AMC but looking forward to this primetime reboot!
Hopefully its very successfull and reignites a soap resurgence! Cbs could follow with a atwt or gl version!
Also Kelly Ripa is just so humble and down to earth in always paying tribute to her soap roots! Very refreshing.

I’m glad you think so also. I’m so grateful to people like Kelly and Mark and Nathan Fillion who are proud of their roots.

No start date as of yet-think of this as being the first stage of three. ABC has essentially said: “We like your idea, work on it some more-and we’ll talk again” If things go forward, a pilot episode (the first episode we would see) will be shot. If ABC likes the pilot, they’ll order PV as a series. All that said-I think we’re at least a year away from seeing anything

Mmmmmm. I don’t know. KR has quite the diva complex. I’m not holding my breath in anticipation of this one. I was excited about The CW’s second attempt at rebooting Dark Shadows and that fell through. It is ABC where the winds of change blow hard. Like Heidi Klum says, “One day your in, the next day you’re out”.

I watched All My Children from day 1, even named my daughter after Tara on there. Almost named her Erica, but she was such a b#### when it first started in 1970 that I said no way and named it after Tara on the show.I will watch Pine Valley & pray it gets the numbers to keep it going for a long time.

Well, for goodness sake – at least give it a chance – it can’t be just a continuation of a daytime soap, those days are unfortunately dwindling down. I’m glad there will be a new inception of it, I had given up all hope especially when the Pandemic hit – so, personally, I will watch it and support it and give it an honest chance.

Just remembern, they used the workd “dark” to describe where this show is gong, so I doubt it will have the feel of the “real” AMC,

Harry

AMC always took a walk on the dark side. Ruth Martin was raped by Rey Martin ( her adopted son’s biological father). Then you had pimp named Billy Clyde Tuggell who brutally abused Stella. Take a look at Palmer Courtlandt—he had a darkly disturbing, obsessional and domineering love for his daughter Nina. There’s so many more dark stories to mention to serve as examples but suffice to say, the “real AMC” was, in fact, dark at times.

I agree With you Harry – many Soaps can have dark storylines –

Well, sometimes Soaps take a ‘dark’ turn in their storylines – maybe she just means that the “lighter moments” will be far few and in-between.

Loved AMC wish Alicia would come back. I could see Selena Gomez playing one of the Santos children or Scarlet Estevez as a Santos. William Liptonn or Hudson West as Kendall’s son.

Great! How about Susan Lucci (Erica Kane) as the powerful matriarch like “Phoebe” was? So fun to think of the story possibilities!

I am going to reserve my comment to this, I hope, when they use the word “darker” it is not like Riverdale, with blood and gore in it. I hope they try to stay true to All My Children’s landscape and don’t go into the “belly of hell”.

Why do we need “a darker feel”? Isn’t the real world dark enough as it is from covid stories to politics? And most stories on our soaps. Y&R even had to mess up a happy time with Abby and Chance two minutes after the wedding.

i want to escape the real word of darkness….too much gloom and doom…ill give it a chance but if it is a bit too dark for my taste im out!!!!

Maybe the “darker feel” was inspired by Mark Consuelos’s other show, “Riverdale”. Which is a “darker feel” of the old Archie comics & TV cartoon (and don’t forget the bubblegum records)

I agree, Rose. Moreover, AMC already had a lot of dark stories. It doesn’t need to go any darker.

I think you would have to bring just about everyone back in order for it to continue in Pine Valley. I have watched this show since I was in high school and I am 60 years old now. People have died on the show and in real life, so you can hardly replace them. Then you have people that are in other soaps. Will they be able to do it or would they do it? Two of my favorite couples were Jenny and Greg. I know they are both acting in real life, but Jenny died on the show (course… Read more »

Well for goodness sake, Jenny and Greg were from 35 years ago – I mean, I’d be more interested in the really main characters – It can’t be a “continuation” show at this point. The days of the Afternoon soaps, they are unfortunately dwindling down and our real chance to see our Pine Valley Pals would be an inception such as this one. I’m older too, don’t get me wrong, I’m interested in the older characters but it’s a night time show and they have to attract younger viewers too.

I’m excited that the soaps are getting an opportunity in prime time. I may have never regularly watched AMC, but I followed it enough on air in the press to know what was going on. And sure, it’s not going to be the same. How could it ever be the same? But it’s an opportunity to see a version of what happens after the last episode of the original aired. I would give my eye teeth for something like this to happen for ANOTHER WORLD or a zillion other soaps we lost. I’m going to watch and root for this… Read more »

Wasn’t there already a reboot on Hulu? I remember watching it it answer the major question to the Cliffhanger that was left in the original series who did JR shot I already know who it is but for those who haven’t watched yet I’m not going to spoil it but mainly it was about the children grown up and barely had the old characters in it most of the people we know are only mentioned

Scott (ATWT Fan)

That was a continuation of the ABC soap; this is going to be a primetime-centric spinoff. As for it “barely” having the other characters, they did get a lot of veterans back, with [some] recasts, too. But, in total, there were only three or four brand-new characters brought on.

I’m so excited to watch the reboot. The last one they tried was terrible. I know most expected just to pick back up but it was just filled with kids. Ones we had no idea who they were until they said their name. Hoping Kelly did it better than the last one with prospect park . Been watching since 1977

John Gainor

The Prospect Park On-line version was slowly finding it’s footing, but it did lack the “heart” of the ABC-TV show. I watched it faithfully, it had it’s moments, but Prospect Park was not upfront with the Fans (like…at all) and not communicative with what was happening when the plug was pulled. For months we were left wondering, well, when is it coming back? I’m glad that the character rights have reverted back to ABC TV – though I wasn’t happy with their cancelling the show without even experimenting with trimming it here and there. In my opinion, no “daily” soap… Read more »

AMC reboot, whatever- it will not even resemble the long-dead soap..
It would be a watch for the Boomers..
Other than Boomers nobody will have a clue as to what it’s about..
AMC can not be revived and its offsprings/children will be an eeehh and canceled after 1st season. It can’t survive by Boomers alone and not many others but the Boomers will have the interest to watch, most likely, dunno but—– time will tell..
I wish it luck for the fans of AMC to have whatever it will be back for them to enjoy.

All My Children was always known for being lighter of all the soaps. More comedy. So I’m worried about what Agnes Nixon would think of this darker show.

Its been 10 years since Kelly announced the All My Children reboot. Well, lets see this happen. I run a group for the reboot my members are getting upset waiting for this reboot to air. Kim Delany was killed off the show decades ago as Tads sister Jenny. Bringing her back will be confusing. I hope she will be a whole new character. Come on Kelly put your money where your mouth is and bring us our ALL MY CHILDREN already. Cant announce bringing it back and leave us hanging. Pride Month Celebrating LGBTQ+ Soap Supercouples: Nuke, Kish, Otalia & WilSon … Which Stands the Test of Time?

June is Pride Month, the time when across the U.S and the world there are celebrations and commemorations to recognize all who identify as LGBTQ and their allies.

Daytime soap operas have had a rocky road when it comes to the representation of same-sex couples.  The soaps have been at one time leaders in portraying key social issues of our time, as well as treading lightly on other subjects, as to its concerns to ‘turn-off’ its core audiences.

When you look back at the groundbreaking first same-sex weddings, and the first gay kiss, the soaps have come far in some ways in their representations of gay characters, but there is always work to be done to serve and to shed light on the under-represented.

As we reflect back to the then and the now, which LGBTQ soap supercouple remains your favorite and had made a lasting impact? Let’s take a look at four duos who captivated many viewers.

Nuke  – Luke Snyder and Noah Mayer – As the World Turns

Van Hansis (Luke) and Jake Silbermann (Noah) were a key part of the evolution of, and representation of LGBTQ character on the soaps.  ‘Nuke’, as they were known as, became the first gay male soap couple to share an on-screen kiss back in 2007.  ATWT also became known as the first soap to depict a fully realized romantic male couple as an integral part of the show.  There was plenty of backlash along the way for the long-awaited kiss to happen, but when it did, the show moved forward to tell their love story.

Otalia – Olivia Spencer and Natalia Rivera Aitoro – Guiding Light

When Crystal Chappell (Olivia) and Jessica Leccia (Natalia) began to play the love story of Otalia, they had to show their affection by a kiss on the head, or holding hands.  It took quite some time for GL to move forward to have two women, two moms, no less, share a lip lock. The complicated love story featured Natalia being conflicted to face her true romantic feelings for Olivia, because of her value system and religions upbringing, and that made this all the more riveting and frustrating at the same time.  In the end, the rabid fan base for this duo was so great that Chappell wound up creating her own series, Venice, to honor and serve them, remaining one of the LGBTQ communities greatest allies.

Kish – Kyle Lewis and Oliver Fish – One Life to Live

In 2009, One Life to Live’s Kyle Lewis (Brett Claywell) was an out lab tech in Llanview, who back in college had a relationship with Officer Oliver Fish (Scott Evans).  It imploded when Oliver denied he was gay.  For years, Oliver remained in the closet, before finally coming out to himself and Kyle.

Kish had been a big success with the media and One Life’s gay audience. LGBTQ-advocacy groups honored the couple and the story.  However, Kish was cut short when the network felt that the data showed that the storyline was not resonating with the show’s core audience.

WilSon – Will Horton and Sonny Kiriakis – Days of our Lives

Days of our Lives delivered daytime’s first-ever gay male wedding in 2014, between Will (then played by Guy Wilson) and Sonny (then played by Freddie Smith).

In an interview with EW, Days of our Lives executive producer, Ken Corday shared on the union, “Will and Sonny have been together for a while and it was the natural progression of their love story. We didn’t feel like there was anything we could or couldn’t do, we treated them like any other couple on the canvas and continued to grow their romance as such.”

In addition, the coming out story of Will Horton was critically praised and noteworthy for the performances of Chandler Massey, who won three Daytime Emmys for his work in the Outstanding Younger Actor category 2012, 2013 and 2014.  Freddie Smith also won in the same category in 2015.  Will has been played over the years by Chandler Massey and Guy Wilson, while Sonny has been portrayed by Freddie Smith and Zach Tinker.

There have been several other key LGBTQ couples throughout the course of daytime history including All My Children’s Bianca (Eden Riegel) and Reese (Tamara Braun). These two characters were involved in the first same-sex lesbian wedding on daytime. Problem was … Reese kissed Zach (Thorsten Kaye) before the wedding, making this infuriating for viewers at home.

Other notable LGBTQ couples through the years have included: Bianca and Maggie on All My Children, Mariah and Tessa of The Young and the Restless played bv Camryn Grimes and Cait Fairbanks, Maya and Rick on The Bold and the Beautiful, Lucas and Brad on General Hospital and others.

Which couple do you think has had the most lasting impact on the history of LGBTQ representation on daytime soap operas? Share your thoughts in the comment section below.
