Kimberly McCullough On Her GH Nurses' Ball 2016 Appearance: "I Got All Choked Up Doing Robin's Speech …"

Most every General Hospital fan can’t wait for the GH Nurses’ Ball. It’s the time of year when the Emmy-award winning drama series takes a bit of a detour to showcase the many singing and dancing talents of its cast members, while still maintaining and moving forward key storypoints, and continuing to shed light and awareness on HIV/AIDS.

The ball which first aired in 1994 is steep in history, which started off of the tragic love story of a young Robin (Kimberly McCullough) and Stone Cates (Michael Sutton).  Stone died of AIDS and Robin became HIV positive.  And this year, Kimberly McCullough is making a return appearance to GH for the Nurses’ Ball episodes, along with her on-screen daughter, Brooklyn Rae Silzer (Emma).  Look for Robin to make a moving speech in front of the attendees.

As previewed in this week’s Soap Opera Digest (on newsstands now), McCullough says of her Nurses’ Ball moment:  “I got choked up doing Robin’s speech and in no way, shape or form was I planning on that.  I was standing there and everybody was looking at me and although most of the people were new, there were some anchors that I had in the audience, like Finola Hughes (Anna) and Lynn (Herring).  I loooked at Lynn and it was like I was transported back 20 years, and I was like, ‘Wow, Lucy was such a big part of the Robin/Stone story, which was the impetus for the ball.'”

The GH Nurses Ball kicks-off on the Tuesday May 24th episode of the ABC sudser.

After the jump, watch the promo for this year’s Nurses’ Ball, and then take look back at the top seven moments from the original GH Nurses’ Ball featuring: Lucy Coe, Steve Hardy, Robin & Stone, AJ & Jason Quartermaine, Miguel Morez (Ricky Martin) and more of your Port Charles favorites.

Then let us know, are you excited and hankie-ready to see Robin’s return to the Nurses’ Ball? Comment below!

Sorry, but tired of Robin popping up when there’s no hope at this point of a return for Robin, Patrick & Emma, unless Robin and Patrick are recast. (And who wants that?) Let them be happy in CA, and let Anna move on from her past into a bright new future with a new adventure and a new man. Enough teeth gnashing over Duke. Duke shouldn’t have been killed off in the first place (or second place given it’s his second death). Drawing out Duke’s death through this revenge plot and Griffin’s connection to him is a cruel trick not only to Anna, but to the fans who sorely miss him. GH made the terrible error of killing him. Now let it go instead of reminding us constantly of what an awful mistake GH made.

hi Melissa..
the ones who saw Robin mature way back when, they like seeing her, why? I dunno lol
I was not around back then so I could care less about Robin one way or another..
same goes for Duke lol

I just want a good time watching the Nurses Ball hopefully with some fine beefcake lol

Gotta thank RC for resurrecting the defunct nurses ball..

000oohh and!
I hope Dr. O gives a great song and Effy too!
I would love to see Sonny performing in ball !! and Tracy !!
and! this year we get Dillian !

Melissa, there would be no nurses ball if not for the Robin/Stone S/L! If anyone deserves to be there it’s Robin Scorpio and just because she’s no longer a regular cast member on GH anymore doesn’t matter! She’ll always be a huge part of GH hospital! And to OOOoohh your comment is even stupider then Melissa’s! Fan’s that have watched GH since Robin was a child love seeing her at the nurse’s ball too! Obviously your new to GH because anyone who would rather see Dr O perform then watch Robin has got to be a GH newbie who knows nothing about how great GH use to be and how bad it is now!

How do you even sit and watch the soaps without not ever looking back on YouTube. .reading old synopsis. .if for nothing else but to learn the history of the show you are enjoying now..sometimes su0000 some things are just better left unsaid. .it does you no favors. .JMO

Agreed. Love that the Ball is back and so happy they are keeping it up and it wasn’t just a 50th anniversary thing. I’ve been watching GH for over 40 years (since the age of 6 with my Mom!). So I saw Robing grow up. And I saw Duke introduced, disappeared, reintroduced with a new face, killed, brought back with the old face, and killed again. I’m just done with the roller coaster ride. So it’s not just viewers like you who might not have a strong connection to those characters who are ready to put Robin and Duke on the shelf to make way for some new stories.

Now, a little respect, su0000!

Thank you for sharing, MIss Suooo. Now enjoy your Jello and I hope you get a Bingo! tonight.

su0000, fans who DID watch Robin grow up care because of her history. If you just rolled in on the fun, why not respect the show’s history?

Amen sister!!!

Yes. Instead of giving Kimberly/Robin the respect she has been screwed iout of the last two balls… Let’s hand it over to the newbies who have turned it into a bad gong show review. Sorry. She belongs there. She is legacy not the Disney Princess.

Hmmm sounds like you’re a DnA fan with a Scorpio ax to grind. So very transparent. Robin has more right to come AND go on this show than anyone currently or recently exited the canvas. It’s called legacy. Thirty years is nothing to scoff at. Duke is dead. He’s been dead since 1990. He never should have been resurrected. He was at best a supporting character. He was the pre-Sonny. Please stop making him into more than he was. Three years. That’s it. Duke was only on the show for three years. He had no history before he came and had no family when he died other than the one he borrowed.

Nope. Liked her with both Scorpio and Duke. And I know Finola would do great with another partner, if they can settle who yo pair her with. (Not Paul, please.)

It’s Robert and only Robert for me. I did the Edmund/David thing on AMC. I sat through the Duke thing on GH. I refused to watch the Sloane thing. Only Robert is strong enough to match Anna.

@ Beach Dreamer

I applaud this and laud the forthright

“… Robin has more right to come AND go on this show than anyone currently or recently exited the canvas. It’s called legacy. ”

NICE

Love your comments and yes, Robert is Anna’s ONLY true love!

NEVER tired of Robin–she’s the RAISON D”ETRE for the ball–an integral part of the
GH “glory days” when TPTB weren’t afraid to tackle difficult subject with verve and energy and passion. Come back ANYTIME, Kimberly–we long-time devotees love you anywhere, anytime.

OK, folks, calm down.
I did not disrespect Robin, geez don’t be jumping on me..
I said/quote

”the ones who saw Robin mature way back when, they like seeing her, why? I dunno lol
I was not around back then so I could care less about Robin one way or another..
That ^^^ is merely a fact 🙂

yahknow.. not everyone saw Robin grow-up, some have never seen Robin stories and not all viewers are a Robin fan..

Happy her fans get to see her again .. makes me no difference.

Robin IS the Nurse’s Ball–the Nurse’s Ball was formed in the name of Stone, her first love. Moreover, Robin was just diagnosed with HIV right before the first Nurse’s Ball.
I do wish we could have a flashback of the real Jason (Steve Burton) carrying Robin off the stage.
I honestly wish they’d stop with the Magic Mike performances. Is DR. Finn, who is also an ordained Catholic priest, really going to bump and grin on stage sans shirt? Holy Thorn Birds, Batman!

Ahem, I meant to write, “bump and grind” but “bump and grin” works too.

Su0000 you got the rise you wanted go get some butter and enjoy that loaf of bread

The Nurses Ball is all about Stone & Robin! It started as a Fundraiser after Robin found out she was HIV+. Please research Prominent GH Occasions to know what you’re talking about,Sheesh!!!

so you are tired of robin popping up because she not sticking around? that makes no sense, i mean i want her back full time, but its ok to get her back as a guest star especially for occasion like the nurses ball, Robin is Anna daughter, so for her to pop up here n there makes sense then never hearing from the character or seeing her again.

Yes, in fact it is frustrating to me to have legacy characters come on for very short bursts, especially when GH already has an oversized canvass of characters and story lines. Kimberly is no longer available to be a regular — but Mac and Felicia are, so is Lucy. Would love to see any of them on regularly with story lines of their own.

I have been watching Kim since we were both young. I grew up with her. The Robin and Stone love story was the saddest story ever. It won many awards for its awareness of Aids and even had after school specials and a book called Robins Diary. It was a huge huge story. You should look at YouTube videos to see why us fans of Robin love when Kim Mccollough comes back.

I can’t wait to see Robin & Emma!! I love SCRUBS Patrick & Robin will always be my favorite couple and everytime I see she’s going to make a return visit I’m so excited!!! I can’t wait to see her and Emma again I wish Patrick could visit with them but as long as I know they’re together I’m HAPPY!!! So looking forward to there appearance at the nurses ball!! SCRUBS & EMMA FOREVER!!!!

I hope they sing you are not alone. like they do every year

No. My eardrums still haven’t recovered from Disney warbling that awful song.

I like Sabrina and I think she has a fine voice but still, Dawn, lol!

Dillan and Kiki…. in those hats

sexy !

LOL

Milo will forever and a day… ALWAYS … will be… the main man… to strut his stud

HE is …. “so fine”

notwithstanding… his sensitive portrayal with Epiphany was dynamic… and we’ll never know…

since the actor .. moved back east

there was something very endearing about Milo
let alone the obvious… what a man what a man what a mighty FINE MAN

YES

I like that Robin will be in attendance with daughter in tow. I think it’s important that she be there since it all started with Stone. ao thank you GH for allowing her to be apart of the Nurses Ball.

I have loved Robin from the first time she ever appeared on GH and I still love her. I am so happy she will be back for the Nurses ball and I love it every time she makes an appearance no matter how long or how short.

The idea of having Robin pop up is a realistic move…What are the chances of an adult child moving away and then NEVER coming for a visit? Not too likely!
As for the Duke story line again, it would be very unrealistic for Anna to just move on without a mourning period. Besides, how else could they have introduced Griffin if he’s supports to be his son if they didn’t keep his memory alive?
Once in awhile it’s “nice” to have a story or two that are a bit more realistic than some soap stories that move too fast…

It’s too bad some fans don’t know the history of the Nurses Ball. Those of us invested in our show remember Stone and Robin, they were the reason for the Ball. Of course we all enjoy it, but there is an underlining story we all remember. Such as when Allen came to Robin and told her she was hiv positive. We remember how he held her, how hard it was for her. We remember Stone dying and how at the last minute he saw Robin again. See, we are invested in our story, so for the newer fans, just sit back and enjoy the show, it will be worth it.

Thank you.

I love having Robin come back for visits. Emma too. It’s not like a plot point device this time. She is not driving a storyline. She is making an appearance at an event of great history for her. Not unlike why Lucy only comes back this time of year.

For all the negative people about Robin you need to go back and look at old stories Robin is General Hospital without Robin General Hospital is lost even know women and me they don’t tell the true story at all

Damn. I’m really disappointed that Chad Duell isn’t part of the Milo and the Magic Wands act this year. Who cares if he can’t dance — his newly ripped body needs to be undressed WAY more often.

I’m happy to see Robin return for an event thats been a huge part of the characters history. It was the GH leadership in focusing on the AIDs crisis back then, that helped fight many of the taboos and prejudices during that time. I remember being so emotional during those old balls when Janice Ian performed or Lucy spoken about her assistant, John, played by an actor that died from AIDS, or the famous “this is the face of HIV” by Robin. I hope her speech gives us a bit of that emotional nostalgia.

I’m happy it is on again but I’m tired of the male strippers routine and people who have noting to do with the hospital be included. Like the black dude who mooches off Hayden, he is a two bit crook but because he has a nice body, he is stripping! Yeah, AIDS research has come along way but “Lucy and her Lucy-n-Dale dancers” is a yawn and an embarrassment!

THIS! Thank you thank you THANK YOU! The shirtless guys are embarrassing! That’s not entertainment. It’s soft porn and has NOTHING to do with the spirit of the Nurses Ball.

Agree. If it were females stripping, ABC would be trampled with letters and petitions!

LOVE the nurses ball! And yes, for those of us who saw the first Nurse’s Ball – I am thrilled to have Robin (and Emma) back for it. While I would like for them to return full time, I am happy for what we’ve got.
Looking forward to all the performances and seeing how Lucy will end hup nekkid again!

Kimberly McCullough – Robin Scorpio Drake

from what I can … gather…. from “Wiki”

the last “Nurses Ball” Robin was present… was 1996 ????

so… here she is … 20 years later !

The Nurses’ Ball is founded in 1994 by Lucy Coe as a fundraiser for HIV and AIDS awareness and research. It is held at the Port Charles Hotel (where the Metro Court Hotel stands today), and attended by most everyone in Port Charles. The event includes acts by various citizens, including singing, acting and dancing. Lucy emcees the event, often with Katherine Bell, and has become notorious for usually ending up in her underwear somehow during the show. The Nurses’ Ball becomes more personal for many in 1996 when local teenager Robin Scorpio is diagnosed with HIV. After eight consecutive Nurses’ Ball, the 2001 one is the last one for awhile due to be because of the lack of funding. It was brought back in 2013.

ARGH! I so wish I could have been watching…. Mary Beth Evans… as Katherine Bell!

WOAH ! Lucy and Katherine as co-hosts

I will look for Katherine Bell on YouTube

“Thank You” GH / ABC / Disney… for bringing attention back to the forefront… for those persons and familys affected by… hiv /aids

it is full circle… I think… as KM was featured in the latest SOD issue… and that it’s heartwarming to see her REEL for this wonderful commitment to generate awareness

I just feasted…. youtube especial

Lucy in all her FINE

dang the audience participation….FROM THE WHOLE cast of ole… WORTH IT

1995 Nurse’s Ball – Lucy strips for charity…. title on YouTube ( the clip is not clear but you immediately recognize wonderfully the whole cast)

I immediately started crying…. when Tony Jones (Brad Maule) was featured. funny how things affect … what added to was when he started dancing with Alan Quartermaine

I HAVE to prop… the broadway schooled…. and classic entertainment of;

Stuart Damon ( Alan Quartermaine) as he opens the show…. with “Beautiful girl”

GH Sonny & Brenda – Third annual Nurses Ball pt1, 1996 ( TITLE)

Published on Jul 22, 2011

Part One. Port Charles is once again dolled up for the Nurses Ball. Lucy is the host and entertaining as always. Alan kicks the show off singing ‘Beautiful Girls.’ Carly is more than happy to replace Bobby and perform ‘Together’ with Tony and Lucas. Ned surprises Lois with ‘We’re having a baby.’ Closing out the show, Lucy and Katherine try to upstage one another singing ‘Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend.’ Alan announces a $30 million donation that Sonny gave. Everyone is touched, especially problem Robin. Brenda is there with Jax and Sonny arrives alone but both are aware of each other throughout the night.

just, WOW

Just as long as Sabrina does not sing, im good. kM can come just as long as she goes away quicky lol
Altoigh i hate when she sings, i think im liking TC a lot better now, she has gotten stronger as an actress.

Sorry everyone. I’m about to say something super provocative and controversial. I loved the character of Robin and the way Kimberly portrayed her as a young person because she did not seem overly “acted”, if you know what I mean. She gave us a very natural portrayal of a child and teen (as compared to some of the younger actors we see today who are way over the top). Adult Kimberly is a better director than actor. Especially when she is brought back for these infrequent guest appearances. In the last few years, she could not match Jason Thompson, for example, in terms of acting chops. So that is one of the reasons I would be OK with letting Robin have a happy life off camera in CA. Let Kimberly have the brilliant career she is meant to have as a director, informed by her work as an actor.

Yep you are entitled to your opinion. I thank the good lord Kimberly remains faithful to this show. I love that she does both and will never get tired of her.

Couldn’t disagree with you more, Melissa!

Melissa, its not so controversial IF there is some truth to your statement. I love Kim and the character of Robin. Some kids grow up and lose a bit of their charm and boldness. This may also happen to Brooklyn , who now is great but may mature into something less? Who knows but I will say this about Kim, her acting is head and shoulders above Sabrina, Nathan, Jordan, Jason, Morgan and Michael! I welcome her in and out. Any of the legacy characters. I just hate when someone comes on to say hey and disappears. I want them to come on for weeks or months and finish a story before they sail off again!

I love Robin but she is not enough to make me enjoy the nurses ball when Lucas is being killed off. The current head writers are terrible; they (and Ron) did a terrible job of Brad and Lucas’ romance, there is so much storyline potential for them, especially with Brad an ethnic minority and gay, but what do JELLY do? Kill Lucas. They have no talent whatsoever and are killing this show.

Brad and Lucas are compelling characters, DONT kill either off! Lets get rid of SABRINA!

Wait, what’s the buzz about Lucas being killed? Haven’t heard that…

‘General Hospital’s’ Steve Burton Shares Reaction to His Lead Actor Daytime Emmy Nomination, ‘It Was to Honor Leslie Charleson’

Published

on

By

The 53rd Annual Daytime Emmy Award nominations kicked-off on Monday with the announcements of four major categories including, Outstanding Lead Performer in a Daytime Drama Series — Actor, and among the nominees is General Hospital’s Steve Burton (Jason Morgan).

Burton is already a two-time Daytime Emmy winner in the Supporting Actor category for his roles as GH’s Jason and his turn as Dylan McAvoy on Y&R. However, Steve is yet to win in the Lead Actor category and he has received 11 nominations along the way in his daytime career.

Following the reveal that he is a 2026 Daytime Emmy nominee, he and his GH co-star, podcast co-host and comedy show partner, Bradford Anderson (Spinelli) taped a special edition of their That’s Awesome podcast just featuring Burton’s reaction to the news.

Photo: JPI

FOR LESLIE CHARLESON

Steve expressed, “I know it’s such a cliche to say, ‘I’m just so honored to be nominated.’ But truly, I’m so grateful to be nominated, so grateful to just be on the show off and on for 30 plus years and to be nominated with the guys in my category. Just to get the opportunity. Frank (Valentini, executive producer, GH) texted me right away. I was just like, ‘Thank you for the opportunity to get to do what I do.'”

Taking in the moment, Burton thanked those who helped him select the material for his nominated reel. “Unless you win, you don’t get to say things. So. I’m going just say a few things: Elizabeth Korte (co-head writer, GH) helped me a lot with the material, (as did) Michelle Henry, who’s a producer on the show, Laura Wright (Carly, GH), and then my wife Michelle (Lundstrom). I believe it was Jill Phelps who told me that when A Martinez felt like he had a great show or great scenes, he would mark it down. So, when Emmy time comes, you have all the show numbers written down, and you don’t have to think about it, because that’s half the battle (finding the material).

Burton explained how meaningful this nomination is for him, because of playing the scenes of Jason losing Monica, and his closeness with the late, great Leslie Charleson.

“The nomination’s an amazing thing, and it’s beautiful, but really it’s to honor Leslie Charleson. A lot of my material was because of her, and how I started on the show as a Quartermaine, it just means a ton,” shared Burton. “Maurice Benard (Sonny, GH) has obviously has been instrumental, and I’ve said it from day one and I’ll shout it from the rooftops. If it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t be here, and to be working with the people that we work with is incredible.”

SHOULD JOHN OLIVER BE NAMED HOST OF THE DAYTIME EMMYS?

During the end of his conversation with Anderson, Steve suggested that the host of the Daytime Emmy should be Last Week Tonight’s John Oliver, who recently guest starred as the head of the WSB named Z on General Hospital, and is soon to show up on Days of Our Lives in a mystery role in August.

Thus far, the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences has not revealed their host for the upcoming ceremony to be held on October 30 in a venue to be named in Hollywood, California.

You can watch Steve sharing his reaction to receiving his 2026 Lead Actor Daytime Emmy nomination below on a special segment on the That’s Awesome podcast.

Now let us know, are you glad that Steve chose scenes surrounding Jason mourning the loss of the woman that raised him, Monica Quartermaine for his Emmy reel? What do you think of John Oliver as a suggestion to host the Daytime Emmys? Weigh-in via the comment section below.

GENERAL HOSPITAL: Jason Reconnects with Danny; Tristan Roberts Arrives in Port Charles, Lots of Nods to #16

Published

on

By

General Hospital’s 16,000th episode was packed with little reminders through points in today’s script that the ABC daytime drama series has set another milestone and it paved the way for the return of fan favorite and newly nominated Daytime Emmy Lead Actor nominee Steve Burton (Jason Morgan). The 16,000th episode also introduced viewers to the new surgeon in Port Charles Dr. Tristan Roberts played by Dean Geyer.

Here are the key takeaways and what went down on the July 13 episode: Tristan and Jason are seated next to each other on a plane heading to Port Charles. Throughout the flight, a beaten up Jason has flashbacks to being thrown into, and being held captive in a cell and tortured. It appears Jason is suffering from some form of PTSD from what he was put through after being dragged out of Port Charles by the WSB months ago.

As the plane prepares to land, Tristan tells Jason there would be a car waiting for him once they land and to enjoy the rest of his life. Later, Tristan arrives at the nurses and doctors hub at GH and approaches Elizabeth (Rebecca Herbst). He tells her his name and that he is the new surgeon on staff.

A REUNION PLUS A HEAD NURSE DEFENDS SONNY

Meanwhile, at the end of the episode, Jason is outside the Quartermaine boathouse looking bewildered when he runs into Danny (Asher Antonyzyn), who is so thrilled to see his father, and the two hugs each other as tears are shed.

Elsewhere, Elizabeth tells Sonny (Maurice Benard) that he thinks its a great idea for him to get the 16th seat on the hospital board, but when it comes times to convince Tracy Quartermaine (Jane Elliot) of that, things go awry when Tracy, Laura and Sonny try to work things out. After Tracy launches into Sonny about killing Alan and Monica’s son AJ, Sonny walks away dejected.

Next, Sonny runs into Elizabeth, where he informs her what happened with Tracy. So what’s a head nurse to do? Elizabeth marches into the conference room and reminds Tracy of all the different donations and ways Sonny has contributed to the hospital from the Stone Cates AIDS wing, to the Michael Corinthos Center for Pediatric Head Injuries as well as his constant support each year for the GH Nurses’ Ball.

WSB WAR SCARS

Then, in one of the best parts for longtime fans of the series, Elizabeth talks about her legendary grandparents, Audrey and Steve Hardy and she tells Tracy they would have wanted Sonny to have a seat on the board for all the good that he has done for the hospital. After Elizabeth states Sonny’s case, things took a turn and Tracy and Sonny wound up shaking hands as Sonny is board member #16.

In the how great was it to see Anna (Finola Hughes) and Valentin (James Patrick Stuart) together scenes department, the pick-up of last Friday’s cliffhanger is played out as the two former lovers fill each other in on what has gone down in their lives in the last several months including Valentin admitting he had been living in Carly’s attic, and Anna realizing she was kidnapped by Cullum, Sidwell and Cassius Faison. During their conversation, Anna sees the hallucination of Peter August (Wes Ramsey) right while Valentin is standing there.

Courtesy/ABC

Later Anna was on her way to saying goodbye to Valentin, when the two share an emotional hug. After Valentin made his exit, Peter reappeared and warned Anna to not let Valentin distract her because she has important work to do. Anna answers, “I know.”

So, what did you think of General Hospital’s 16,000 episode? What do you think is wrong with Jason? What is the important “work” that Anna has to do? Were you glad to see Sonny get a seat on the hospital board, or not so much. Weigh-in via the comment section. But first, check out the scenes on Jason and Tristan’s long flight to Port Charles.
