Mal Young Exits As Executive Producer and Head Writer At The Young and the Restless

As many had predicted, Mal Young is gone from The Young and the Restless as the series executive producer and head writer.

Young confirmed his departure from the show via ShowBiz411.com with a statement “Just arrived in London for the holidays. I felt like it was a good time to move on. Never a good idea to get too settled on a long running soap and I achieved all that I and CBS set out to do: improved scripts and production values. I have a project of my own that I’ve been developing and want to pursue that now. Plus running a show like this is all consuming and want to get a bit of my life back – and see my family occasionally!”

Ratings for the top-rated series have been down since Young has been in charge, and in addition, several fan favorites given less airtime, or dropped from the show, while plenty of newbies brought to the canvas.

So, what do you think of the exit of Mal Young from Y&R? Comment below.

this had to happen. Mal was bad horrendous writing and he filled the show with characters we don’t care about. hopefully the new regime will focus more on the vets and get rid of the newbies

YES

THRILLED.. couldn’t be happier‼️he made a mockery of this beloved show.
Hopefully the next head writer will cleanup the mess Mal left behind, starting with ridding us of the Rosales clan.

Agreed. Lola is redeemable, but the rest of them…GO AWAY!

Agree

YES! YES! YES!

Gee, why does everyone want the Arturo etc. gone? Let’s see if we can figure out why people would rather see Syphilis AGAIN for the 100th time than see Rey? I bet we can figure this out….

I know what you’re implying, Why Not, but I think you’re fighting windmills Ala Don Quixote. There is no racism transpiring, here and I don’t recall anyone asking for more Phyllis. I hate Phyllis with the heat of a thousand suns and am wondering why we’re over exposed to her grating and coarse presence. I don’t want Arturo gone. He’s a good match for Abby. I also don’t want Rey or Lola gone as they are decent actors. What I and others object to is the rapid prolification of new characters in concurrence with lousy and clumsy writing. Rey takes over Paul William’s Office and no one talks about it. And speaking of MIA, Mia can go back to Miami. Why? Because she’s a badly drawn, not needed character fleshed out by a poor actress. In addition to missing Paul, I also miss Neil, Hillary and yes, even Lily, and last time I checked, the aforementioned last three were not white. I know you’re well intended but cries of racism distract us from real cases of racism thereby diminishing our collective voice of protest.

Ps. I LOVE Lola!! She’s a real
Winner.

i’d keep Lola and dump the rest

If his replacement has half a clue, Doug Davidson will be getting a contract as an early Christmas gift!

As executive producer, Young started out fine. I believe he was the one responsible for repainting the Chancellor living room yellow from that horrible grey (“Chancellor Correctional Facility”). My first impression is that he actually listened to input from viewers by that smart move. However, his stint as the head writer proved me wrong. I know that you can’t please every viewer (we all have our own opinions, which clearly vary, about what works/doesn’t work for the show) but it is NEVER a good idea to ditch a long-running character (Paul) played by the same actor for 40 years with not even a explanation of his absence and then insert a brand new character (Rey) into the same job. The only thing that will do is alienate loyal viewers.

Honestly, I quit watching Y&R several months ago as I simply have NO interest in the Rosales family while Young seemed to hellbent on making them the “new middle-class Williams family.” The Rosales clan MAY have worked if the writers slooowly intergrated them into the show but introducing all of them in 6 months while, in that same period, veterans characters Paul, Ashley, Hillary and Chelsea exit. (Yes, I know some left voluntarily but the change was jarring).

In less than 3 years, Y&R has had 2 executive producers and 3 different head writers. Something clearly is NOT right. The instability behind the scenes is seriously damaging the show (change in direction of writing, shift in focus of characters, change in character’s personalities). I don’t wish to hear Angelica McDaniel’s “corporate speak” about how “great” things are with Y&R and how fantastic the new people will be. We’ve heard that repeatedly over the past decade — That line is worn out. Either Sony/CBS are looking at the wrong candidates for these jobs and none of them are working or Sony/CBS are micro-managing things so much that people actually with talent aren’t able to put out a good show.

I find it hard to believe that, with all the built-in benefits for this show (well developed veteran characters with a wealth of history between them and a loyal audience), some one can’t figure out how to remedy the mess currently passing as Y&R.

Beautiful written Barbara and I agree with you 100%…

Angelica needs to be next on the CBS chopping block for not just supporting the demise of YNR but also for her support of Les Moonves.

Agree, Angelica has to go! She’s annoying and put up with this nonsense for years now.

absolutely. I think this is the 4th regime change since she’s been in charge. she let JFP,Pratt and Mal dismantle this show

Didi…oh, I agree with you…TOTALLY!!!!! Angelica McDaniel’s EXIT from Sony/CBS is LONG OVERDUE!!!!!

Happy Holidays.

I agree with your every word, Barbara. However, I really hope Lola stays–she’s a hit. And I have nothing against Rey–Rey can stay! I just objected to the way he was brought in while Paul was ushered out. Why not pair Paul up with Rey? I mean, as crime fighting partners, not as a couple! Mia can go as can Kerry, Nate and Tessa.
I had high hopes for Mal Young but he’s really proven to be a disappointment. It’s not just that he rapidly brought in a mass quantity of new characters, he brought them in clumsily with a lousy introduction. And the never ending JT storyline has been written so badly it makes that music box mystery look like Masterpiece Theatre!

Totally agree

Oh Harry, you gave me a laugh. The J.T. saga has been going on longer than most actors’ entire careers. Do you remember that insane “reliquary” story, about 10 years ago? What nonsense that was! And Victoria getting kidnapped because Billy owed his bookie a few bucks? But even those potholes didn’t last THIS long. Regarding Rey, I don’t mind him when he shaves, if that makes sense. Or sans Mia.. she brings everyone down. And would you entrust Nikki’s care to Nate, “Doctor Zen”? He sent Hillary down the rabbit hole permanently! Nate reminds me of an old Woody Allen quote: He’s a perfect example of “form without any content.”

Great quote, Soaphound! You are usually one who gives me the laugh. Do you think Dr Nate, Kung Fu artist extraordinaire is too good to be true?

Thanks Harry. But if Nate Sedate has any kind of dark past, it’s probably jaywalking. The man has ZERO personality; he just quotes illiterate psychobabble that any first-year psych major could debunk. Still can’t believe he’s Nikki’s physician…the man could probably bore her INTO a coma. Between him, Mia, Kerry, nuFen, and the recently departed Shauna, we’ve had our share of torture this year. Though I will admit Fen is cute, Kyle nailed his obnoxious personality to a tee. Let’s hope 2019 sees an improvement.

if this Rosales family is gonna work then they have to be completely rewritten. Mal brought in all these new people and never developed them

ITA, especially about Angelia McDaniel’s comments. She’s got more PR spins than Donald Trump!

YAY, I am so happy with this news…NOW, who will we have for his replacement and when does the new material begin?

We should expect changes within a few weeks since they tape a few weeks in advance. The stories have been written but the EP and head writer can make changes, and the EP can definitely make decisions ASAP.

..Not too late to undue the damage done..
Return the background music to its former glory. Bring back the real Gcpd captain Paul Williams, give Jack a real age approp love intrest, convince Eileen its safe to come back,Mishael Morgan too from the morgue, bring back the real Nick Newman not Adam 2. 0 that has taken over his soul, speaking of Adam..he cant return soon enough
Ease up on ol Vic hes become too evil.
..in other words besides my prayers being answered if the new team can bring the real y n r back before this last screwup

AMEN Damien.

Time for him to leave!

Awww no, I liked Mal’s ideals..
I like newbies, they bring Newness they bring something different than the same old..
Thing is;
Warning!
Some didn’t like Mal’s ideals but– who will replace him could be a Nightmare, actually..

Soap writers/producers are an endangered species..
Finding a qualified replacement for Mal could be a challenge.

Here’s hoping whoever replaces Mal will not be a stupid writer.

Su! So happy to see your comments again! Missed you!

Suoo, I like new characters too but they have to be brought in with care. He just dumped a whole load of new characters while pushing out veterans and this was accompanied by horrifically bad writing.

100 percent correct!

In other words, he followed the GH model…

I don’t mind new people but this was done horribly, you bring in one at a time develop them and slowly integrate them with the cast, you don’t bring in a whole bunch at once then shove them down viewers throats without any characterization

Looking forward to a happier year of viewing, in 2019, for everyone at Y&R and its audience, now that changes at the top have begun.

It’s a nice, early Christmas presents for Y&R fans and to look forward to the new year, that’s when the changes will show up on Y&R.

On to the next person who won’t understand why the show remained so popular for 30 years.

The show has been on fire lately. 30 years in the number 1 spot. Yeah I miss a few characters that have left but there’s still a lot of good stuff to tune in for. Whose left to take over for Mal?

Maybe Ray, his brother, sister and wife can move to England.

I like them all but especially the wife, Mia. She’s a classic soap be-otch I think. I can’t wait for her to meet up with some of the other ladies in front of the mirror in a powder room!

But Mark, the actress who plays Mia is GOD AWFUL! She is not the woman you love to hate, she is the woman you hate to hate. I hope she is the first to go–she cannot act her way out of a powder puff. She may possibly be the worst actress I have ever had the misfortune of seeing on the small screen.

I totally agree she could not act even if someone did it for her. I read that this is her 1st acting job. It is now almost the middle of Feb.& why are these horrible actors (?) still on? When the writers devote so much time to Mia & Rey it makes our skin crawl. They have as much sex appeal as 2 rocks on a beach.

Good riddance the sob, is back in London where he belongs.

Amen Tony!

It was a matter of time.

Um. Ok.

oh lord – “why” couldn’t this ^^^ be happening to @General Hospital… WHY

I really would love to hear .. what all these past writers truly think of being stifled by censorship… is that the reason so many come and go?

@GH “Frank Valentini” MUST BE FIRED AS WELL @shelly and chris STINK have been for upwards of over 3 years

Any such change to the stifling status quo at GH would be most welcome!

True…GH is currently painful to watch.

Thank you for your reply, Fancy!

Hello, Jamesj75 and best wishes for this winter season! Can you believe the state of GH these days? I know we’re in trouble when the best I can say is that it’s better than Y&R at the moment. ANOTHER cloak and dagger yarn for Sam, Miss Mumbles herself? Really? Who was clamoring for that? More grisly unpleasantness with the Kevin/Ryan saga? And let’s not forget, yet more stories for Sonny and Carly: we have a replay of Sonny’s affair with former D.A. Claire Walsh (now Margot), and they’re even inserting them into Oscar’s illness. Christina’s boring “search for herself” is equally dull, and poor Chase is saddled with Miss Gloomy Gus Willow. And don’t get me started on Peter Puke. The only bright spots for me are Drew and Kim, two of our best actors finally given some emotional meat. Oh James, I’m beginning to lament like Mrs. Bennet in PRIDE AND PREJUDICE: “What’s to become of us?”

Soaphound, thanks a million for reaching out to me here! I couldn’t agree more with all the points you are making about the current storylines at GH, with my most vociferous support regarding the omnipresent, omni-annoying, omni-despicable Sonny and Carly…

On your Pride and Prejudice reference, disappointingly, I am not as well read as you, my Friend… But I do take your point! And I wish for you and your loved ones a wonderful holiday season! 🙂

ABC doesnt listen to their fans!

Ding, Ding, DING!!!!

there were a few good storylines however letting some of the veteran actors “disappear” was a HUGE NO NO for me. BEST move was Michael Melor being cast as Kyle. WHat a gem he is – I have to say the BEST Kyle ever

i agree about Kyle. Great character and actor.

I agree and he keeps getting better and better. I wish Josh Morrow would take a page from his book.

I also agree regarding Michael Melor, he’s excellent and such a welcome addition to Y&R.

Stopped watching when he took over. Hope they bring in someone who can make the show interesting again.

I blamed everything on this guy, and what we think he did to the show, but one thing I have learned in my long life, and hundreds of soaps under my belt is, be careful what you wish for! Sometimes things don’t work out the way we thought they would/should.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all.

Wise words, Miss Lemm.

Harry, here are some other words I read today about Mal Young’s claims of leaving Y&R of his own accord. He said that ruining Y&R ” was all consuming” and that he wanted to get a bit of his life back. Yes, ruining instead of running, is an intentioned typo, but true, never the less.

i’m pretty sure he didn’t leave on his own. I think he was fired

Oh Violet, you mean it could get worse?

About friggin time. Now let’s save our show. Bring back: Michael Muhney, Doug Davidson, Eileen davidson, Judith Chapman and Kristoff st John with front burner story lines!!

folks need to see the interview with eileen davidson & michael fairman then maybe they will stop saying bring back eileen………………wow

I definitely agree about Michael Muhney. He was so awesome as Adam and he’s such an amazing actor. He’s just what Josh Griffith loves to write for, the dark, mysterious character.

Yes, Blake. And Mr. Muhney was beyond gorgeous and really knew how to wear men’s clothes. That day when he wore the lilac dress-shirt and his beautiful hair was perfectly combed back, I nearly lost my balance! The show desperately needs him back…what a talent.

Hopefully I’ll be the 1st one here to use the word, “MALfeasance”….

Oh Snap! Good one, Mister Media!

MAL-adjusted, MAL-function, just about anything MAL you can think of.

If it means that the new regime bring back Doug Davidson as Paul, then I’m all in. Otherwise, they’re just spinning their wheels.

FINALLY…IT’S ABOUT TIME!!!!! That CLOWN Mal Young did WAY TOO MUCH DAMAGE tp Y&R!!!!! SAYONARA!!!!!!!!!!

A few ideas…

1. Bring back the following characters to Y&R: ALL of the Brooks sisters, Amber, Brittany, Cole, Gina, Julia, Nina, Paul and Raul.
2. GID RID of the following: NuNate (beyond boring), Reed (beyond lame), Summer (beyond annoying) and Tessa (beyond whiny).
3. Most of all, put Jess Walton, Tracey Bregman and Beth Maitland BACK ON CONTRACT!!!!!!!!!!

Later.

The “Get Rid of’s” are spot on Jay!

jaybird, throw in the demise of Mia and Kerry and you’ve got a deal.

Soaphound…sounds good to me…lol.

Happy Holidays.

But Jay! Reed of the man bun had to come back so he could run over his grandma on time for Christmas! Everyone wanted to see that. Plus, we can all sing one of our favorite Christmas songs, “Grandma Got Run Over By her Grandson!”

Harry…THAT is too funny…lol. Also, here’s hoping that the, uh, coma, will TOTALLY IMPROVE Nikki’s HUMORLESS AND STANK personality…lol. Hey…soap opera-wise, I TOTALLY BELIEVE in miracles…lol.

Happy Holidays, Harry.

The British are leaving, the British are leaving!

Thank God Mal Young is gone from Y&R, and hopefully ALL U.S. soaps! Shows are so stupid to wait til a show has cancellation rumors to axe someone like Mal Young. We were glad to get rid of Chucky but Mal is right up there with him!

I’m not a big Y&R fan but my mom, sister and niece are so I let my mom know just now via text and she’s happy. She said the storylines are stupid, especially the JT story lol.

Now if they can get the actors that play Paul and Ashley back that would be great. Sony needs to stop being so cheap.

Quick correction: Get and not gid. My bad.

Later.

Did he quit or was he fired?

I have absolutely loved his work since Ashley’s exit story. That was CLASSIC soap opera. I like the look and the pacing of the show. I like that it is not dark and depressing like it was under Griffith and then Pratt. I hope the new regime keeps some of the thongs Mal brought to the show.

I really liked what Mal You did for the show. I loved the new pacing and the dialog writing. I liked the Abbott storyline ending with Ashley leaving and I like the JT storyline.

More than anything else, I love the Rosales family. Adding 4 new main characters was desperately needed in to Ryder to dilute the nearly incestuous dating and marriage scene in Genoa City. I mean, come on, how many times can the show remarry the same couples? How many times can one person date or marry father and son or mother and daughter combos.

I am also happy Jack has Kerry.

I love the friendships being portrayed on the show right now–Lola and Mariah, Kyle and Mariah. My favorite relationship right now is Kyle and Lola. The character with great potential is Mia.

I think the show is fine without Neil, Victor and Paul. Some actors left on their own, but fan said seem to want them forced back. Maybe they can CGI Katherine back on the show.

I started watching Y&R right around the time Mal Young started as EP after several years of not watching. I am no fan of Josh Griffith’s writing…so right now I fear for the future.

I’ve heard of Russian bots? But British bots?

How is Mal a British bot?

Tom, I do not know how to put this nicely, so I’ll just say bah humbug, as I pull my fingers out of my throat! Glad you’ve been enjoying the show though, that makes one of us.

Some live to complain and hate. I offer praise where I feel praise is earned.

Nikki playing the Y and R theme on the piano for Victor as she is on the verge of crossing over gave me the chills…a very impactful scene.

Seems you are the only one. That Rey Rosales is just creepy. The way he looks at people and his voice…UGH. Phyllis should be back with Jack…not Nick. It won’t last because Nick will always love Sharon and this thing with Nikki will bring Nick and Sharon closer again I hope. I was almost sick to my stomach when when they put Phyllis and Nick back together. Just let Sharon and Nick get married already and let them stay together.

OK…you know what: Whenever Nikki wakes up from her, uh, coma, here’s hoping that she’ll gain a sense of humor…lol.

Hey…just saying…

Re: Mia’s dinner party on Fri. She can obviously tell that there is something between her husband and Sharon, and since they can’t stand each other, why does Mia insist on inviting Sharon to her little fiestas? Is this a case of ” keeping your enemies closer?”
I feel sorry for Reed, poor kid, thinking he’s probably killed his grandma, and so scared to say anything, and even the great doctor can not fix her, oh my.
Jack is still a vital and attractive man, at sixty-three, and does not need to be sleeping with this young women ,young enough to be his daughter.” What ever happened to Ravi? He might have been a good match for Kerry. A lot of us liked him. Another character gone, without a word. I’ve read that Judith Chapman/Gloria will be on DOOL, playing Leo’s mother, but no mention here of her absence from GC. Enough of my blathering. Happy holidays to all,

I say good ridence to bad rubbish. He couldn’t write his way out of a wet paper bag. What gibberish and garbage he has brought to this soap that I have watched most of my adult life. Bringing in the Rosales family was just a huge mistake except for Lol. I like her. Goodbye Mal-ware

If this means the return of actors like Gloria, Neil and Paul, great.

Perhaps a slightly different perspective on Mal … I watched his work on “EastEnders” for several years, so I was actually more than a little fascinated by his efforts to bring in a more “blue-collar” family to integrate to the series. I hope that the new EPs will continue this trend. I also love his new rooftop set and Chancellor Garden. I like Arturo and Lola a LOT, but can do without Rey and the insufferable Mia. And I too dislike the fact that Paul and Gloria just plain disappeared from the canvas with NO explanation. That’s a kick in the teeth, not only to the actors, but to the audiences that have followed them for decades. I found that odd, because Mal would NEVER have stood for that on “EastEnders.” As to the current state of affairs, the last several weeks have really served as a reminder of the importance to Eric Braeden to this series. With Victor off the canvas, it’s been like a month full of Thursdays. And that’s not only a testament to Braeden, but an indictment on the writing. We really don’t HAVE characters capable of sustaining an interesting storyline for a month at a time except for Victor … that’s a problem.

Fantastic! I was fast forwarding thru most of the show. Then I stopped recording, it was so bad. Last 2 years were terrible.

Bring back Adam’s character!
