Now that Mal Young is out at the number-one soap opera, that left the executive producer and head writer positions open.  But according to a report from Daytime Confidential, Y&R has replaced Young with two veterans of the soap genre.

First, the report says the new EP will be Anthony “Tony” Morina who has been with Y&R since 2004.  Morina has also produced and worked on Santa Barbara, Sunset Beach, Port CharlesGeneral Hospital and All My Children.

Second, Josh Griffith (Pictured here) will take over the head writing duties.  As many know, Griffith had been with Y&R several times in soap career.  He was Co-EP from 2006-2008, and named head writer two other times in 2007-2008 and 2012-2013.

Y&R has had several changes at the top now over the last few years:  Mal Young took over from when Sally Sussman and Kay Alden departed, and their tenure was short lived.

So, how do you think Y&R will look and feel under this new regime if confirmed? Who would you like to see come back to Genoa City and exit Genoa City? Comment below.

Griffith was ok the last time..defintly better than mal young. I enjoyed his character creations of Carmine, Avery and the Michaelsons. I would take Tyler and Leslie back anyday and mix them back up with the Winters and Carmine for Lauren especially now with Fenn back! Avery could also come between Phick!
More importantly though we need the Chancellors back and specifically Nina and Jill!

Mal Young was going to bring Jill back. Jess Walton said Mal Young was wonderful. Don’t know if that will happen now. She might not think Josh Griffith is wonderful. He killed off Delia.

well it cant get any worse..heres a few hints end the jt storyline quick,,get rid of ray and bring back paul,,show arturo shirtless more often definetly keep kyle and the new girl..give charlie a major story, get rid of anna,,,teamdevon and mariah back up..recast jill bring back brenda dickson honestly y and r eat crow she will bring your ratings back.

I said the same thing—the show can’t get any worse with what we have to see now.

Amen brother, if Jess is retired, yes, bring back Brenda! Her and Dina would be great together!

also i may add..nate is so much more interesting in a towel..bring back kevin and philip and let the gay screen sizzle,,after all what do u republicans know you voted in trump..
as for new characters bring back leslie and lorie brooks along with there teenage kids,,

With Josh at the writing helm, hopes of a “gay screen sizzle” will never exist.

Teenage kids???! You mean teenage grandkids!

I know that a lot of people complained about Josh Griffith being the head writer but I say let’s give him a chance and anyone can do better than Mal Young…I am happy about Anthony “Tony” Morina…I feel both Tony and Josh know Y&R history and really could do good for this once classic show…I ask that they both work together and bring back the directing, feel, look, sound (CLASSIC BEAUTIFUL CLASSIC BACKGROUND MUSIC), YES I said it again and will until the day I die… and the wonderful writing back to this show I LONG to get back to it’s CLASSIC ROOTS…PLEASE bring back Doug Davidson and let’s get stories back to where they need to be…

this regime may have promise,i hope they finally get it right this time. having a regime change every year is not good for the show

Time to clean house Y&R, get rid of Tessa, Ana and Rey. I love Lola, she is my favorite new character. Bring back Nina Webster and Paul Williams. Please bring back the original Jill, Brenda Dickson she was the best Jill ever.

I do think there will be some cast changes. I would like to see Tessa gone,i’m over her and her subpar acting

The show needs vision and value. I am so sick of the same producers and head writers in daytime getting recycled around…they literally retell a story from their past on another soap and expect it to work (Example: Jill Farren Phelps writing in the death of Cordelia Abbott- which was quite similar to Jake’s death on General Hospital). Stop bringing on people who don’t value the show, lack new vision, and only want to play favorites. Change is something we have to embrace, but the appearance of almost ten new characters within a six month period is nonsense. This is daytime, and it is so disturbing how little respect CBS & Sony have for the top rated soap; at the end of the day, those guys are the final call- if a story, an actor, or something isn’t working out, they make the call. Perhaps if they effectively analyzed the history of the show, the value of the daytime audience, and the classic charm Y&R was known for…we’d have a solid soap in place. In 2018, we lost Mishael Morgan, Eileen Davidson, Doug Davidson, and Christel Khalil; clearly something isn’t working over there.

Amen to that. I agree with everything that you said. There are reasons the fans love young and the restless. Would like to see the veteran characters and fan favorites come back to the soap in 2019.

I totally agree. The past year to year and half has been so bad, after watching since my 18th Birthday, March 26, 1973, I was addicted, until the past 18 mos. My mother watched GH and ATWT while I knew those characters, I did not care about them. Y&R was always different. Y&R was well written on reagent issues of the time. No so any more. God Bless America

Yep. Know your audience and respect their value for tradition.

Every time they change EP and HW’s the show sinks a bit more into oblivion. Why on earth will you hire as your HW someone you fired from the job more than once? Don’t get my wrong I think JG is a good writer, and he knows the characters better than Mal– but his stuff is super dark– remember he is the one who killed off Billy’s daughter– yes compelling drama, but with him as HW prepare to be depressed

I don’t understand the brass running daytime– doesn’t anyone higher up realize what made daytime dramas a success was LOVE STORIES– not just hitting the sheets, but love stories– my goodness- hire someone from the Hallmark Channel who writes all those sappy Christmas love stories and pair them with a Josh, who can bring a bring a bit of the dark and adventure– and VOILA- classic Soap at it’s best.

For me, if they bring back Doug Davidson and start treating their actors professionally both in front and behind the camera, it will be a step in the right direction.

Josh did NOT kill off Delia – he left “Y & R” BECAUSE of JFP and her penchant for killing off kids!!!

Youre wrong. That story was touted as Josh’s “first big story”. He left after the story was already in play.

Josh quit because he didn’t want to kill Delia. he was against it but was overruled by JFP. this story was all JFP,a complete copy from GH

Well all I know is that his name was on the credits when that story was running, and his name was on the credits at Days, when they turned Ben into a serial killer who brutally murdered Will Horton– so either he likes dark stories or else he is a yes man who will write whatever they tell him– either way, not the shot of romance Y&R so desperately needs.

Thank God! Josh Griffith is a great writer and had he not had to contend with the hack Jill Farren Phelps he could have written some really good stories. He wrote the Billy/Adam feud over Dehlia. Please bring Michael Muhney back as Adam. Have Traci Abbott and Gloria back fulltime. Create a story for Jill and if Jess Walton doesn’t want to work bring Brenda Dickson back. These items alone will be rating Gold. I find the show unbearable to watch at present anything has to be better than what we’re getting.

Yes!! Please please bring back Michael Muhney as Adam! I think Shick bk together or Shadam right off…don’t care for Phick but liked Phyliss when she was with Jack or Billy but she seemed to have chemistry with Ravi too. Bring bk Ashley too!!!

Yes!!! Muhney is so needed to spark up this show again along with Doug davidson, Eileen Davidson, Judith Chapman etc. Bring back the firecrackers and give them amazing story!!!

I agree. Bring back the story backbones! Doug Davidson was a staple as much as Victor or Nikki. Give him a storyline! And for all that is good, please stop making those once beautiful women starve themselves and inject themselves with drugs. The average public does not distort their appearance for others.

Mal Young leaving The Young and the Restless is a mistake. Was he the perfect executive producer? No. But, did he do things that other EPs are scared shitless to do? YES! Was being both EP and head writer a good idea? No. I don’t think an EP should ever co-handle titles as a HW; yes, I’m looking at you Brad Bell, who needs to be removed from both positions, immediately! Honestly, it’s the shrieking, close-minded idealist “fans” that complained the most, and it was annoying. I’m low-key hoping this change bites them in the ass, because they deserve it.

Anthony Morina becoming executive producer is a bittersweet pill to swallow that ultimately leaves me worried. Yes, it’s nice that he’s been there off-and-on since 2004, so he’s trusted with the cast and crew (I am assuming). However, his track record as EP is partially troublesome, plus, I don’t want him to come in and immediately restore how the soap ran previously, because Young made some great changes look-wise to the soap and it’s the best-looking of the four daytime dramas, and has a nice new feeling to it. There are specific changes they should be made, however, I feel like he’s going to mirror his wife and ignore the past and just do whatever it is that he wants to do, which is worrisome.

As for Josh Griffith, I’m voting NO as a whole on this. When he was first re-hired as HW in 2012, I was excited. He had background for the soap and made it known he wanted to write for characters that were lost. However, the majority of his regime was a mess. Can he write dialogue for characters? Yes. He can write a solid storyline? No. He regime was far too dark, and then his regimes at Days of Our Lives were also too dark, and absolutely depressing at the end of the day. I am hoping that he doesn’t just write-off the Rosales family, either. I like the family, I do! I just feel like they were brought in a bit too quickly. By now is when Mia should’ve been introduced, instead of rushing in after Lola and Rey. And follow a bit of Douglas Marland’s soap rules. No major changes for six-months. Look at what you have and work with it for a bit.

What I am happy about is the reception from non-cast member Jacob Young, who I said should’ve crossed over as Rick Forrester permanently. However, I am recanting on that a bit. He should either be cast as nuAdam Newman, or they should cast him in a new role after six-months. His excitement for the duo of Griffith and Morina is nice to see. However, I’m reserving my right to be worried about this duo coming in at the top of the year.

Well said, Scott (ATWT Fan). Mal Young did what needed to be done. Most soaps wait until they have already tanked and then try radical changes when it’s too late. Mal worked to bring Y&R into the current times and position it for the future while it’s still strong. Yes, that means diverse characters, yes, that means younger actors, yes, that means new families to broaden the scope of Genoa City. We can argue all day that he introduced characters too quickly or whatever, but the fact remains in terms of production and casting he was working to position Y&R for future success. I don’t think he had any chance of stopping Eileen Davidson’s exit; she really wanted to be with her family. And it’s time to let Michael Muhney go. They aren’t bring back someone who their senior actors didn’t like working with. Talk about disrespecting your vets! That would be egregious. Now it looks like Y&R is returning to the same-old, same-old. I hope the show doesn’t take a big step backward.

sonniorsolita, I don’t know who you are, however, your response is refreshing and welcomed! You are right: Mal Young was hired to do a job, and, eventually, his job changed and expanded. Was it likely what caused him to leave? Maybe, but he did the absolute best he was capable of doing, and it made the overall canvas of Genoa City thoroughly enjoyable.

As for Ms. Davidson, she made it pretty clear she was wanting to leave a while before she did announce her decision to leave, and Young gave her a story-worthy exit. She even stated she wished she’d been given that kind of material before her exit. So, that’s disappointing. As for Mr. Muhney, as much as I would love for him to return, I stopped holding my breath the moment Justin Hartley was cast in the role. And, at this point, I don’t see the character of Adam Newman returning.

I have a sinking feeling that it IS about to take several steps backwards, however, I am hoping it won’t.

Bringing back MM would be putting a bad boy in a bad boy Slot. GET Rid of the whinner that plays Summer. If he was that miss behaving, why not give him a warning. HE is indeed good at what he does, and more like Victor’s son. Hollywood can be two faced about 2nd chances. Give MM a 2nd chance. Bring back Doug Davidson and Chelsea!! I loved her character.

Nah on Jacob Young. Either bring back MM as Adam since he’s the one that everyone loves and remembers the most or keep the character “dead.”

Didi, as much as I love Michael Muhney and his portrayal of Adam Newman, I simply just do not see him returning at this time to the role, nor do I honestly see the role returning, either.

Michael Muhney is never coming back to Y&R unless a host of other actors and backstage people leave. Way too many bridges burned, and fans need to accept that and move on.

It’s not up to cast if someone does or does not come back. If there have been discussions prior, then there could be discussions again. Once again, however, my original post still stands (which makes me question why you responded to ME and not someone else): I do not see Muhney nor the role of Adam Newman returning anytime soon.

Please bring back Michael Muhney as Adam. We need a bad boy on this show and he was the best.

I know most are optimistic about this news, but not me. I remember how disappointing, disjointed and plot point-y Josh was as Head Writer the last time. And I will never forgive him for the havoc he wreaked during his tenure at DAYS, effectively ruining their monumental 50th Anniversary (though Dena Higley gets credit there too). During both runs, it felt like he just threw plots up against the wall and let the characters fall into both- Jack with a drug problem, Ciara for getting raped are two examples that come immediately to mind. No depth, no basis in history or characterization, no feeling of authenticity. Josh KNOWS his stuff, but I never saw it in his writing.

I’m treading super lightly on this one…and would caution others to do the same. The grass is not always greener. Mal had his problems….some big (!!!) problems….but the show was tighter and stories were better than they were under many recent regimes.

Good Lord i hated when Josh Griffith wrote for this show. Please leave that boring Avery OFF of Y&R! Also DO NOT undo all of the progress Sharon has made. Under Mal, Sharon has become bearable again and i WILL NOT WATCH if they revert to making her crazy again. Where is Kay Alden and Ed Scott? Find a young, fresh HW with respect for the genre!

YES!!!!!!!!

Great news! As long as Mal Young is gone that is what is most important! I’m so happy for you Y&R fans like my mom, sister and niece are!

My suggestions: Give Jack an age appropriate relationship and give him back control of Jabot. Bring back Paul Williams, give Michael and Lauren THEIR OWN storylines, along with Neil and please give the man a woman! Maybe Kerry or Kerry for Nate, if he is still around. Convince Jess Walton to stick around for longer visits. Say good bye to Tessa and Arturo, along with the twins and Reed, if suitable storylines can’t be written. I am hoping for positive changes and I know it will take time.

Those ideas sound like giving all the air time to the 50+ crowd and writing off youngsters. I just don’t think that’s a good strategy long-term.

Hi, No, no writing off the young set, but giving equal time for all.

the show needs a mix of young and old

Jess Walton has stated, multiple times in recent interviews, that she is more willing to work now than she was when she opted to go to recurring status. So, I don’t believe it will take much convincing for her to come around for longer stints of time. Reed is already gone, and, honestly, Arturo does not need to go.

I am fed up with Monday morning quarterbacks who think they know more than the experts. I’m sick of people passing on misinformation about why actors are leaving. Eileen Davidson is 60 years old with a teenager at home and she stated she wanted to spend time with family. She said it many times but still people say she left for ulterior motives. Mishael Morgan was in the middle of negotiations when she told her agent to stop. Maybe she would have and maybe she wouldn’t have gotten a raise but what we DO know is she had baby #2 a few months later. Just maybe she wanted to be a stay at home mom. Christal Khalil has quit the show before and returned but this time she requested to go on recurring. She has a new man in her life and he lives in Canada so that could be part of her decision BUT she isn’t off the show. Doug Davidson is another story, one that we may never hear the truth about. What we do know is the show did not give him a goodbye and they should have UNLESS they didn’t fire him and only put him on recurring. If he was fired the powers would not throw a party but what about his coworkers……..did they? Above all this is a business and bosses don’t tell the other employees why a colleague is let go and in this case fans don’t hear the real story. Davidson was boring as hell no matter what storyline they gave him and that is my opinion. Personally I liked Young’s storytelling with the exception of everything that happened after Nikki hit JT. Total bs followed and is still not wrapped. I love all of the new characters, they have added to my daily enjoyment of a show I have watched from 1973 at age 26 until today.

Great points. The executive producer is not to blame for every decision made by the actors. They have their own lives, agendas and priorities. I, too, think it’s refreshing to have some new characters and families added to the daily mix.

Doug Davidson was never fired; that was what naysayers online spread as rumour. He was simply dropped to recurring, due to lack of story potential for the character of Paul.

Scott–
the ‘lack” of story for Paul, naww..
the story he could have had was given to the new detective in town..

GramS-
I do agree with you 🙂

I know zero of both of them..
but-
seems they are recycled writers, the old bones so to say..
so-
what they will do this time around will be much the same as what they gave last time, so, not much change will come from them.
can’t teach an old dog new tricks ..

Anyways- they/it will be new to me so no worries..

Tony Morina has been a supervising producer with the show since the early 2000’s. Josh was writing when JFP was hired and he was fired to bring on Pratt jr. Hre’s not a bad writer at all.

hi GramS,
thanks- good to know..
I had no bad towards Mal, I liked him..
so time will what will hit next hit us lol ..

GramS told you the wrong story; see my response above for the actual truth.

You’re telling the wrong story “GramS,” so don’t spread libel around for your own hidden agenda. Josh Griffith was neither fired nor fired to bring on Pratt; he opted to leave The Young and the Restless of his own decision and Sally Sussman (who was co-head at the time) was promoted to head writer, alongside Jean Passanante. It was Sussman, Passanante and their co-head, Tracey Thompson, who were demoted to breakdown writers to bring on Pratt as head writer and co-executive producer.

No. No no no!!!! No more Josh Griffith!! How many times can someone be fired and still get a job at the same show?? Mal Young has been doing AWESOME work lately! The show has been sophisticated, light, funny, dramatic and much more. It has been classic soap opera!

I absolutely agree about Mal Young but he is gone.

Oh for goodness sake, where going from boring (Mal Young) to awful (Josh Griffiths), wasn’t he the one who turned Days of our Lives to shit a few years back? How do these guys keep getting work?
Bring Maria Arena Bell back, when she was HW was the last time I loved watching Y&R.

Josh Griffith was hired to try and save DOOL but he doesn’t write bizarre. There were a few after him until they hired Ron who excels at bizarre.

YESSSSS Maria was the absolute best. Especially for the character of Adam. After she left he got soft with Chelsea. Ugh.

The show needs Kay Alden and John F. Smith back as head writers (or story consultants at the very least) if it ever wants to bounce back from where it is at at this point.

In an interview, Kay made it clear she’s unlikely ever to be asked back and, if she were, it’s unlikely she’d say yes.

They need to get someone (EP’s and writers)who have not been on other soaps. That’s why all the stories are the same, because the writers and producers are the same people who have been on other soaps. They only know soap story lines and soap production. Everything they do gets stale quickly because we’ve seen it too many times already. Give us some really new blood and watch lightening strike – again.

I’d like to see the talented long term actors brought back!! It was a big mistake to let them go!!!!!

I like Rey and Sharon potentially together although Nick and Sharon should be the next generation Victor & Nikki. Get rid of Phyllis and Mia. That said there needs to be some type of Villain, e.g. Summer and/or the new chemist could be up to something The JT storyline started out good but has gone on too long wrap it up! Please. Tessa not an effective character, I think Finn needs a good storyline, as does Mariah. I do think the new characters that have been introduced has made it a little more interesting soap rather than the same ole, same ole, like B&B. Good luck. More adventure please.

Thank you so much for bringing Doug back! I am 75 and have been watching the Young and Restless since it’s beginning. I love Victor and Nicki , and the ole timers. Please keep them on! Glad to have you guys take over !!!

Mal Young is still listed at head writer as of 3-12-2019. When will his name be deleted from credits?

Definitely do not want to see Gina Tognoni leave.
She is absolutely the best!
Not to mention a really sharp dresser.
