Mark Dobies, Guiding Light and One Life to Live Alum, Dead at 65
Mark Dobies who played Guiding Light’s Dr. Noah Chase (2000) and One Life to Live’s Daniel Colson (2003-2005) has died at the age of 66. According to a local New Jersey obituary, Dobies passed away last week on March 11th. No cause of death has been revealed at this time.
News of Dobies death first circulated via an Instagram post from Guiding Light’s former show publicist, Alan Locher, who also hosts The Locher Room on You Tube. While GL fans recalled that Dobies was a love interest for Kim Zimmer’s Reva Shayne, it was his role on OLTL that was marked with a controversial story for its time.
On One Life, Dobies played district attorney, Daniel Colson who was married to fan favorite and lawyer, Nora Buchanan played by Hillary B. Smith. Problem was, Daniel was having an affair with man, Mark Soloman (played by Matt Cavenaugh), and covering it up and murdering people who found out his truth. In story, Daniel killed Paul Cramer (David Tom), after the young man threatened to expose his double life to his wife and the community. He also killed Jen Rappaport (Jessica Morris).

The fact that a daytime soap was portraying a gay man as murderer brought about protests from GLAAD, who felt the storyline reinforced negative stereotypes about the LGBTQ community when they were fighting so hard to be represented at all on daytime television and television at all.
Frank Valentini, One Life to Live’s executive producer at the time, stood by the decision of the show to tell the story. Valentini remarked, “This is a story about the harsher side of intolerance and about one man not being true to himself.” In that respect, the story was groundbreaking for its time in the early 2000’s.

During his career, Mark also took to the stage in the 2004 Off-Broadway revival of Larry Kramer’s The Normal Heart, playing the role of Bruce Niles alongside cast members: Richard Bekins (ex-AW), Raul Esparza and Billy Warlock (ex-DAYS, GH and ATWT).
In addition to his roles on Guiding Light and One Life to Live, Dobies appeared on the TV series: Home Improvement, Melrose Place, Everybody Loves Raymond, Just Shoot Me!, Fringe, Gossip Girl and more.
The actor is survived by his three children, Francesca (27), Olivia (24), and Robert (21), as well as his mother, Suzanne, his brother, Paul, and his sister, Sandy. A memorial service is being planned for a future date.
Now below, watch the classic reveal when Bo Buchanan (Robert S. Woods) outs Daniel Colson to Nora and the rest of Llanview in the climatic scenes from the story featuring Mark Dobies.

Oh, the groundbreaking stories that One Life to Live told. Right or wrong this was a biggie. I remember all the twists and turns of this story so well. I remember reading that Mark Dobies was hesitant playing a gay character. I think that worked for him. He played Daniel Colson as a man who was uncomfortable in his own skin and desperate to keep his double life together. Everyone involved in the story did a great job.
My deepest sympathy to Mr Dobies’ family and friends. May he rest in peace.
